"The Mount Douglas Granite constitutes the eastern part of the Saint George Batholith and contains the youngest, most differentiated phases of the batholith. It also contains extensive endogranitic, low-grade. Sn- W-Mo-bearing sheeted vein systems. Early phases of the Mount Douglas Granite are coarse- to medium-grained, seriate granites that represent the slowly cooled carapace of the intrusion. Late phases are medium- to fine-grained, equigranular and porphyritic granites that were accompanied by repeated and widespread fracturing of the carapace and injection of mineralizing fluids. These granites represent a highly differentiated suite with ""A "" type affinities developed in a ""within plate"" transitional to ""syn-collision"" tectonic setting. 4oAr/ 39Ar dates for biotites from the various phases indicate emplacement circa 367 Ma.The linear distribution of some phases in the Mount Douglas Granite and the systematic orientations of sheeted veins along tensional fractures indicate structural control on granite emplacement and vein distribution. This type of relatively passive endogranitic mineralization is unique in the granites of southern New Brunswick and contrasts markedly with highly fluidized systems operative elsewhere in the area. IntroductionInvestigation of Sn-W-Mo occurrences in New Brunswick has shown that most of this mineralization is associated with late, highly differentiated phases of post-orogenic (Acadian) granitoid magmatism that occurred during Devonian and Early Carboniferous time (Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1988). The polymetallic Mount Pleasant Sn-W-Mo deposit (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1972; Kooiman et al., 1986)and the Burnt Hill W deposit are two orebodies of this type in New Brunswick. Numerous smaller deposits associated with these granitoid rocks in southwestern New Brunswick have been documented in previous investigations (Ruitenberg, 1967, 1968; Ruitenberg and Fyffe, 1982; Taylor et al., 1985; Lentz, 1985)."

"FLEX 31 is a chemically enhanced sodium isopropyl xanthate. Developed by Charles Tennant & Co (Canada) Ltd and has shown improved collection properties over SIPX for sulphide minerals flotation. Improvement of recoveries, grades, faster kinetics, lower dosages, high pyrite and pyrrhotite rejection capabilities have all been exhibited by FLEX 31. Recent plant trial carried out in the copper circuit at one of the largest copper mine in Zambia shown over US $ 2.00 Million annual improvement on the bottom line over SIPX at current copper prices. Data produced also showed superior grade and recoveries from rougher concentrates that previously had not been attainable with other reagents effectively. Flex 31 has also shown positive outcomes with zinc, Copper/Zinc, arsenopyrite and copper/molybdenum ores.IntroductionSodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) is one of the most popular flotation chemicals on the market today. Somewhat more specific than amyl xanthate, SIPX is used in a variety of ores like copper/zinc, lead/zinc, arsenopyrite/pyrite, and many others (Melis et al., 1991). An investigation carried out by the research division of Charles Tennant & Company (Canada) Limited has produced a chemically enhanced SIPX. This product has shown all the advantages of normal SIPX along with improved recoveries of copper and copper activated minerals. The product was named “FLEX 31”."

"In the Bayer process, flocculants are introduced in the feed well to enhance the aggregation of red mud particles. To gain a better understanding of the flocculation process taking place in the feed well, shearinduced flocculation was achieved using concentric rotating cylinders (Couette system). Our previous work has shown the effect of the shear rate on the aggregate’s settling rate and on residual turbidity of the Bayer liquor. In this study, the data demonstrated that the aggregates at selected shear levels appear as a population with a widespread size distribution. By using an imagery apparatus, it was possible to measure the size, the shape, and the sedimentation velocity of the larger red mud aggregates. Marked differences were noticed in the characteristics of the aggregate populations obtained under various shear conditions. IntroductionIn the Bayer process, red mud particles are separated from the liquor in primary clarifiers and washing circuits under the action of synthetic polymers. The agitation in the feed pipe and in the feed well affects the flocculation since the aggregates are formed by the interaction between the red mud particles and the polymers. A minimum shear rate is needed to initiate the aggregation process of fine particles (Warren, 1975).Different systems have been used to study the effects of shear on the flocculation process (Tampo and Watanabe, 1979; Klimpel and Hogg, 1986; Scott et al., 1996; Biggs and Lant, 2000). The Couette flow system has been used in some studies on shear-flocculation (Oles, 1992; Farrow and Swift, 1996a, 1996b). The importance of the physical properties of the aggregates in determining the efficiency of the solid-liquid separation process within a given gravity thickener has been demonstrated (Farrow and Warren, 1989a)"

Since 2001, CANMET Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories (MMSL) have worked with Falconbridge Ltd. (now Xstrata Nickel) to evaluate trends in the strength development and water retention properties of a novel backfill material for underground mining, called gelfill. Between 2004 and 2006, extensive laboratory tests were undertaken under the leadership of the Deep Mining Research Consortium (DMRC). This paper compares results obtained from samples circulated through a mini-flow loop and a simple mixer. Although many parameters were studied over the last five (5) years, this paper focuses on the investigation of the effect of the mixing method, sequence and time, and the curing environment on strength development and water retention of gelfill. It was found that binder should be added as a powder to the mix in the mini-flow loop, and that mixing slurry in the mini-flow loop as opposed to the mixer generally yielded higher strengths. The practical implications of these observations are the subject of an on-going underground trial that will compare laboratory and in situ properties of regular slurry fill with gelfill.

"Two iron deposits within the Precambrian mineral belt of Cameroon are described in detail for the first time: the Archean Metzimevin replacement iron deposit enclosed in Fe-enriched itabirite, and the Proterozoic granite-hosted, shear zone-related Mayo Binka magnetite deposit. In the Metzimevin de¬posit, quartz is corroded and microplaty hematite overprints martite-textured hematite. The Mayo Binka massive magnetite veins show evidence of deformation in magnetite (fracturing and microbrecciation) and in overgrowths of specular hematite (mechanical twinning and undulating extinction). The magnetite is partially replaced by hematite (martitization) and goethite. Ores from both deposits have >88% total Fe2O3 and low contents of contaminants such as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO, P2O5, and TiO2. They are also poor in Cu, Pb, Zn, V, Cr, and Ni. The Metzimevin massive hematite is characterized by an accentuated light rare earth element depletion relative to the Fe-enriched itabirite. It is suggested that the Metzimevin iron deposit is the result of hypogene leaching of gangue minerals from, and further hematitization of, an itabirite protore. Although the genesis of the Mayo Binka massive magnetite is unclear, it is spatially related to Neoproterozoic granitic rocks. The data allow some comparison of these little known, but pot¬entially economic iron deposits, with some of the world’s better investigated deposits, and are useful to the exploration efforts for iron ore currently underway in Cameroon and the Central African subregion.Deux gisements de fer de la ceinture minérale Précambrienne du Cameroun sont ici décrits en détail pour la première fois : le gisement de fer Archéen de Metzimevin formé par remplacement et encaissé par des itabirites enrichies en Fe, et le gisement de magnétite Protérozoïque de Mayo Binka as¬socié au cisaillement dans un granite. Au gisement de Metzimevin, le quartz est corrodé et de l’hématite en microplaquettes se développe au dépends de l’hématite a texture martitique. Les veines de magné¬tite massive de Mayo Binka présentent des évidences de déformation dans la magnétite (fracturation et microbréchification) et dans les surcroissances d’hématite spéculaire (Macles tectoniques et extinction ondulante). La magnétite est partiellement remplacée par l’hématite (martitisation) et par la goethite. Le minerai des deux gisements contient >88% de Fe2O3 total et un faible contenu en contaminants tels que SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO, P2O5, et TiO2. Il est également pauvre en Cu, en Pb, en Zn, en V, en Cr et en Ni. L’hématite massive de Metzimevin est caractérisée par un appauvrissement relatif en terres rares légères relativement à l’itabirite enrichie en Fe. Il est suggéré que le gisement de fer de Metzimevin résulte du les¬sivage hypogène des minéraux de la gangue ainsi que de l’hématitisation poussée d’une préconcentration de fer dans l’itabirite. Bien que la genèse de la magnétite massive de Mayo Binka demeure obscure, elle est spatialement associée aux roches granitiques Néoprotérozoiques. It is currently recognized by mining society that autonomously guided underground mining vehicles may greatly increase the efficiency of mining production and improve human safety. Recent results in mobile robotics, data fusion and sensor development provide a solid basis for solving the problems related to autonomous underground navigation. Recently developed commercial systems mostly rely on the infrastructure that is expensive and difficult to maintain. Guideless navigation in unstructured and harsh environment of underground mines is still a challenging task. In this paper, we describe an autonomous navigation system for an underground mining vehicle equipped with on-board dead reckoning, inertial and optical sensors. This system does not require any artificial infrastructure and is capable to guide the vehicle along the complex environment of interconnected underground drifts; it also ensures the detection of obstacles on the vehicle path. The user interface for monitoring and control is described and the results of laboratory tests and on-site experiments are presented. Work in progress addresses the system integration for real equipment, and the system upgrade, adding map-building and selflocalization capabilities .

"The Cortez SAG mill liner design was recently modified to improve the mill operating energy efficiency. In addition to the expected benefits, the design change unexpectedly played a significant role of verifying the proposed grinding circuit expansion for the Cortez Hills project as well as illustrating current SAG mill bottlenecks. This paper will discuss the evaluation that addressed operator and maintenance observations, historical PLC data, and “crash stop” observations to calculate charge motion, packing between lifters, and slurry transport through grate and pulp lifters. The performance of the new shell and discharge end liner design will also be discussed as well as their role in the possible grinding circuit expansion.INTRODUCTIONCortez Gold Mines commenced operation in 1969 with its Mill #1 rated at a nominal 2,000 tons per day. Mill #1 was a conventional rod mill/ball mill circuit followed by an 8-stage CIP circuit. In the early 1990s the Pipeline deposit was discovered and subsequently Mill #2 was built to process the increased ore volume. Mill #2, commissioned by mid-1997, was a nominal 10,000 tons per day SABC circuit followed by an 8-stage CIL circuit for oxide gold ore. Operating and commissioning details of this plant have been published elsewhere (Powell, 1998). By late 1998, there was not enough ore volume to support both mills so the smaller, higher operating cost Mill #1 was put under its current care-and-maintenance status. A simplified flowsheet of the current mill is shown in Figure 1."

"Vast amounts of time and money are spent fighting flow problems in plants that involve the handling or processing of industrial minerals. Because these types of projects tend to be capitalintensive, the right decisions, made at the design stage, can have a substantial positive effect on the economics of the project.Some of the problems related to solids flow in mineral processing plants include:•,Flow stoppages•,Uncontrolled flow•,Segregation of blended materials•,Build-up and dead material resulting in loss of live capacityUnfortunately few Universities in North America provide courses in the design or selection of bulk solids handling equipment, let alone the theory of bulk solids flow, with the result that engineers do not fully appreciate the effects of bulk solids handling on their process. The usual method of selecting “standard” equipment, all too often, leaves plant operators hammering on hoppers to promote flow, a technique that is not only usually ineffective but also unsafe and often causes damage to equipment. In short, too little consideration is given, at the design stage of projects, to the particular material and operating environment involved and how these will affect handling between process steps.This paper seeks to give a general understanding of bulk solids flow theory including flow patterns and flow property tests, and presents functional design guidelines to ensure reliable flow. As well, a case history will be presented. Our message is clear: To ensure uniform, reliable flow, a plant design must take into account the specific flow characteristics of the bulk solid to be handled or processed."

"There has recently been a resurgence of interest in unit flotation of mill discharges. At the Kidd Creek concentrator, this technique has been successfully applied to silver flotation in a 3050 mtpd silver-copper-lead-zinc division. The major incentive has been improved silver payment through increased overall recovery and better distribution between the sequential copper, lead and zinc concentrates. A large, but variable fraction of the silver in the ore is present as native silver and, being dense and malleable, is susceptible to overgrinding. Grinding circuit surveys showed high concentrations of silver in both primary and secondary circulating loads. Laboratory testwork confirmed that this was selectively flotable, identified the secondary ball mill discharge as the best feed stream and optimized flotation conditions. A 10 t/h pilot plant campaign confirmed that the rate of accumulation of silver was sufficient to sustain continuous production of a silver concentrate and that flotation of the whole stream was not necessary.The present 30 t/h production circuit recovers from 5 to 50% of the silver in the ore at a concentration ratio between 25 and 250. The circuit also contributes to a better understanding of ore mineralogy, as an 'on-line' indicator of elemental silver content."

"EPD (Electric Pulse disaggregation) and HS (hydroseparation) are exceptional technologies for research, concentration, evaluation, and mineral extraction of specific minerals such as precious metals (Au, Ag, PGM), kimberlites (extraction and concentration of indicator minerals), zircons and baddeleyite (recovery of objects for geochronology), and even gemstones (method of evaluation and production of the 100% gemstone concentrate of ideal crystals) etc. EPD is used for recovery of pristine undamaged crystals of diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire etc, including large crystals. It was tested on various hard ores and was especially successful for recovery of “soft” minerals from “hard” matrix. EPD products are very convenient for HS processing, resulting in representative concentrates of all heavy minerals including the finest particles (5-10 µm). The combined EPD and HS method enables high sensitivity (20 ppb) for evaluation of precious metal ores providing objective information about original grain size, associations, and recovery using a very small amount of sample (1-3 kg). Latest developments of EPD and HS techniques at CNT Mineral Consulting Inc. include the HS-21 hydroseparator (50 kg/hr) and the Spark-21 EPD (5 t/hr), which enables use of both techniques for prospecting and mineral processing of industrial size samples of certain ores.INTRODUCTIONThe main task for mineral processors is to find a reliable technology for testing of mining feasibility and the efficiency of mineral extraction procedures. Among various mineral processing approaches of extraction and concentration there are two alternative cost-effective methods that can be described as the most environmentally benign and complementary: electric-pulse disaggregation and hydroseparation. These techniques were tested on many different ore types and process products with great success providing a precise and comprehensive mineralogical determination of different accessory precious metal and other useful minerals constituent in rocks, ores, and tailings.This article describes several examples of EPD and HS use: native gold from the Kostomuksha deposit (Karelia, Russia), a Ag-Au deposit in South America, zircons from ancient ultramafic igneous rocks of SW Greenland, bauxites of West Australia, PGM from the Driekop dunite pipe and gemstones (ruby, sapphire, emerald and demantoid) from different deposits."

"Through funds made available in 1972 by the Nova Scotia Department of Mines and Energy (DME) and the federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion, a program was initiated to recover saleable coal from mine waste dumps adjacent to the existing Acadia wash plant in Stellarton, Nova Scotia.Following evaluation of these dumps in 1972, the Acadia wash plant was modified to treat high-ash material. The first production was recorded in late 1974. By the end of 1979, a total of 738,202 t of dump material had been processed, yielding a total of 205,212 t of thermal-quality coal.The successful Stellarton operation led to considering the possibility of recovering thermal coal from other dumps. Evaluation of the Westville dumps indicated total recoverable reserves of 1,346,617 t averaging 53.8OJo ash.Parameters for plant design were defined from the washability characteristics of the dump material and the results of a bulk test. Two options were proposed; one was to use the existing plant with some modifications, the other was to build a modular mobile plant that could be used at future dump sites in the province after Westville. At the 25% ash level, the potential recovery of coal from the dump was estimated at 41% yield (by weight) or 549,679 t."

"A methodology was developed in the mid-1980’s to predict plant performance from standard laboratory flotation tests. The technique is based on a simple, empirical kinetics model, and is tailored for use by the practical metallurgist.To date the performance of more than 20 flotation plants has been predicted, including copper, lead, zinc, phosphate, pyrite, graphite, cassiterite, platinum, nickel and various slags. The method has successfully been used to predict and size four flotation plants directly from bench-scale laboratory flotation testwork. All have since been commissioned, and have performed as predicted.The technique has now received broad acceptance within the South African mining industry, for example in the last year alone it has been used to drive flowsheet development for at least seven new plants. It is also being used to assist in the optimisation of existing operating plants.The methodology is described in this paper and verification of the methodology is presented using case studies of porphyry, polymetallic and PGM operations.INTRODUCTIONThere is considerable interest these days in the use of modelling to simulate flotation circuits, for process design and plant optimisation purposes. Although these models are proving to be useful tools for plant design and optimisation, their complexity can make them cumbersome – expensive to use and difficult for metallurgists to visualise and mentally absorb, without a background in each specific technique. In “SUPASIM” no attempt is made to measure flotation fundamentals, rather to use empirical relationships between laboratory flotation kinetics and plant performance – relationships that hold up well to validation exercises as will be demonstrated later in this paper. Although not designed to be as comprehensive as other models, “SUPASIM” is easily understood by the operating metallurgist and can be quickly and easily applied."

Mine site infrastructure for storage and delivery of hydrogen must be standardized and acceptable for routine and safe industrial use before fuel cell technology is adopted as a major power source. An initial study reviewed possible options for production, storage and delivery of hydrogen for underground equipment. The high level review included assessment of economic, operational, technical, and health and safety risks. Following this review, a subsequent theoretical study to select typical minesite infrastructure and for construction at an operating research mine is outlined.

Introduction It is believed that the present paper will be of some interest, not because of any outstanding features of Renabie milling practice but because Renabie is the first gold mining property in a newly explored area - in Leeson and Rennie townships, Sudbury district, Ontario - to reach the production stage. The Renabie mill was originally designed by the General Engineering Company (Canada), Limited, as a 300-ton plant and went into operation in June, 1947, treating an average of only 128 tons a day for the balance of that year. Toward the end of 1948 the capacity of the plant was expanded to 450 tons a day, and the tonnage treated was gradually increased from the 1947 figure to the point where 420 tons a day was averaged for the first nine months of 1949. Description of Ore In general, the outstanding gangue component of Renabie ore is white quartz, which comprises at least 80 per cent of its total bulk and in some sections considerably more. Virtually all the gold occurs in very finely divided state; only very rarely has free gold coarser than 325 mesh been observed. The ore has a very low sulphide content, ranging from about 0.50 to 1.00 per cent by weight. The gold occurs both free in the gangue and ? locked in sulphides, the proportion of one to the other varying considerably from one orebody to the other. Pyrite is by far the most abundant sulphide, followed by galena, which, however, appears to be entirely absent in some of the orebodies. Minor amounts of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite, and sphalerite have been noted. The ore appears to be entirely free, or almost so, of minerals containing arsenic, antimony, or molybdenum, and in general it could be described as free milling. The various hindrances to extraction of the gold which have been met with are believed to be due largely to the very finely divided state of the metal and to its intimate association with the sulphides and gangue. The ore contains silver, with the gold-silver ratio about 3:1.

"THE AREA which is described in this paper (Fig. 1) includes the continental margin of eastern Canada extending from the Gulf of Maine to the north edge of the Grand Banks, which, including the continental shelf, slope and rise, comprises an area of about 600,000 square miles. The paper is intended to give a background of the geological setting of this region in the context of its ultimate potential for oil and gas reserves in close proximity to the Nova Scotia energy market.HISTORY OF EXPLORATIONThe history of geological exploration of this area really began in 1878, when U.S. fishing boats brought back samples of rock recovered in trawls from their expeditions to the long-famous fishing banks off Canada's East Coast. Tertiary and Cretaceous fossils recovered from these samples indicated that the eastern Canadian continental shelf was actually the submerged northern extension of the Atlantic Coastal Plain."

"A number of silver producers have identified a need for a system to recover silver and gold from base metal flotation concentrates on site rather than sending the concentrate to third party smelters to improve mine economics. Historically intensive cyanidation has only been used for coarse gold gravity concentrates in batch machines but Gekko have applied the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) to these difficult to leach concentrates.The ILR’s unique ability to operate at various solid to solution ratios, high mass capacity, the ability to handle fines, the use of peroxide to aid silver leach kinetics and simple operation has resulted in significant economic benefits to Hochschild PLC’s Selene and Arcata operations. This paper describes the commissioning phase of the ILR5000BA intensive cyanidation reactors on concentrates from the Selene mine at the Ares Concentrator.INTRODUCTIONIntensive leaching of high grade concentrates in gold ore treatment is now commonplace and is considered an essential feature of most gold circuits (Lane, Fountain and LeBrooy, 2008). The devices commonly used for intensive leaching (InLine Leach Reactor, Acacia Reactor, etc) are specifically designed for the typical coarse nature of the concentrate.In some of these intensive leach applications, significant amounts of silver are co-recovered with the gold. In fact, the intensive leaching conditions of 1 to 2% NaCN in solution and high dissolved oxygen levels, overcome the issue with silver’s slow dissolution rate in traditional CIL/CIP circuits and avoids the formation of insoluble silver sulphide minerals on the surface of the gold (Marsden, 2006).There are a significant number of mine operators producing silver in the form of mixed base metal sulphides flotation concentrates. Typically the mine operators are paid for the silver after processing of the concentrate by the base metal smelter whom recovers the silver during the refining process."

The theory proposed that xanthates, dithiophosphates and dithiocarbamates could be synergistically combined in an optimal formula to deliver improved grade and recovery. The approach uses a five-step structure, viz.1. A mineralogical study of the ore to be treated, identifying and quantifying the economic minerals (with hosting and association) and gangue species present.2. Selection of candidate collectors from this mineralogical information and from the known pulp conditions of that operation (e.g. Eh, pH).3. Design and execution of a factorial experiment to estimate and test the main effects and interactions, and to model the response surface for an optimum formulation [Box et al., 1978].4. Use of a High-Confidence Flotation Test platform in the factorial to reduce overall errors and allow for clearer observations [Lotter, 1995; Lotter and Fragomeni, 2010].5. Statistical design of a plant scale trial to measure and validate the gains [Napier-Munn, 1995; Lotter et al., 2009]. Eland Platinum, which was commissioned in November 2007, appointed a team to apply this theory to formulate an optimized mixed collector suite for use in the operation. The West Pit ore (UG2 - Normal ore) was sampled at site and brought to Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, Canada, for mineralogical and metallurgical testing in 2008. Microprobe and QEMSCAN measurement characterized the type, grain size and textural association of the discrete Platinum Group Minerals (PGM) present. From the mineralogical data, it was clear that a mixture of dithiocarbamate and two xanthates would be a likely reagent suite selection. A factorially designed set of High-Confidence Flotation Tests studying these was performed, concluding that an optimal suite using certain amounts of these collectors was a viable formulation that would advance the grade and recovery performance at Eland above the standard PIBX by approximately 2.13% 4E PGE. The plant trial, which used a form of the replicated block design after Napier-Munn, 1995, and Lotter et al., 2009, exceeded this estimate with an overall PGE recovery gain of 2.48% (absolute basis) and a concentrate grade gain of 26.4 g/t PGE (absolute basis), as well as reducing chrome in concentrate from 2.04 to 1.62% (absolute basis). These gains proved to be statistically significant using the analysis of variance method, and have validated the theory."
