Water auditing and water conservation measures are fast becoming the quantitative tools for water balance reporting in the mining and minerals processing sector. Therefore, this paper was written to describe the process of water auditing in a goldmining environment and to contribute towards building an appropriate water management framework for The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for sustainable resource processing (CSRP). The research will assist with the assessment of water balances in mining and hydrometallurgical processes and ongoing probabilistic modelling for Newmont Mining Corporation, its wholly owned gold mines, and its joint venture operation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM). Kalgold or KCGM are the managers of a joint venture project between Barrick Australia (50 per cent) and Newmont Mining Corporation (50 per cent) at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia (WA). Boddington Gold Mine (BGM), Western Australia, will commence operations this year and manage the new goldmine expansion project. BGM is 100 per cent Newmont owned and will operate to continue mining gold and copper from the existing (BGM) site that was decommissioned in 2001.

Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

Industries in the Kwinana area have embarked on a journey of improving the eco-efficiency of Western AustraliaÆs primary heavy industry area. The Kwinana Industrial Area has some unique characteristics that provide both opportunities and barriers. The Kwinana Industries Council and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry are working with the industries to identify a range of projects that can deliver improvements for both environmental and economic æbottom linesÆ, and to progress these projects using internal and external resources. The evolution of the process, its relationship to the ethos of operating companies, and the availability of resources to pursue projects, is an interesting study with lessons for others interested in taking the same course.

Mining is an activity which has, in the past, been regarded as often leaving land in a condition unfit for further use. As the need for development that is both economic and ecologically sustainable has grown, so the issue of re-use of land after mining has become significant. During operation it is usual that mine environmental conditions which minimise unnecessary or avoidable environmental impact are agreed with the regulatory authorities . These conditions are usually set down in such a way that they can be interpreted reasonably well by both miners and regulators. However, the conditions to be met by a mining company before it can be absolved of responsibility of a site are often less clear. The close-out criteria by which the success of rehabilitation programs will be judged have received little attention in the past. These conditions are now growing in importance as the costs of rehabilitation of a mine site to an agreed post-mining land use assume greater significance in the economics of mining. This paper briefly describes the status of close-out criteria presently being applied across Australia. A comparison is made with similar guidelines from other countries.

Mine rehabilitation is a sustainability issue that has been revisited ad infinitum; however, the persistent lack of demonstrated on-the-ground performance and an increasingly intractable rehabilitation liability in Queensland continue to erode the credibility of the mining industry and regulatory bodies. For at least ten years the need to change the current, process-based approach to rehabilitation to an outcomes-based approach has been apparent. The ISO 14001 series temporarily diverted attention from this important point, however it would appear the limitations of an ISO 14001 approach are now more widely accepted. It is proposed that a successful outcomes-based approach cannot be achieved without meaningful community engagement. The apparently intractable nature of the rehabilitation issue will continue to generate conflict and criticism unless all stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the process of developing robust and practical outcomes for rehabilitation. Sharing the responsibility will ensure the best possible outcome. It is important to recognise the valuable resources inherent in community groups, many of whose committed volunteers have considerable expertise in relevant areas. Community groups should not be seen as adversaries but as allies in the process of solving problems that affect the wider community. Several projects that can be seen as test cases for the engagement of stakeholders exist, and in this paper the process of achieving multiple stakeholder engagement in the context of Environmentally Sustainable Development is discussed.

The presence of clay minerals slows down the settling rate and mitigates compact consolidation efficiency in tailings dewatering. The increasing use of saline water in many plants, affects the dewatering performance and presents the mining industry with new concerns. Efficient tailings dewatering is a great challenge due to the complexity character of tailings, especially clay mineralogy, clay content, and water chemistry. In this study, existing studies of the effect of different affecting parameters, such as pH, ionic strength and polymer flocculants, on clay aggregation behaviours are reviewed. The settling behaviours of three types of commonly observed clay minerals in tailings, kaolinite, bentonite, and illite, are also investigated in saline water with different water salinity as a case study. The settling rates of clay minerals are found to be affected by water salinity, clay type, clay content and polymer dosage levels. High salinity water hinders the settling of kaolinite but assists the settling of bentonite and illite through formation of different aggregation structures.The current work has indicated that strategies to promote more rapid dewatering could include adjusting flocculant type or level, water salinity and salt balance, and tailings solid content levels. Implementing dewatering strategies may require a more detailed knowledge of the effect of surface chemistry on the nature and strength of the clay inter-particle forces. This study discusses the research gaps on how to better manage clay-rich tailings in saline water and identifies new research directions. The development of a water management model, supported through in-line monitoring data to predict and manipulate of the surface chemistry of the clay component of the tailings could be a new direction to manage the issues associated with clay minerals in the process of dewatering and tailings management. Mining is an international business and vital contributor to national and global economies. It depends on the trust and confidence of investors and stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), 2016). The Social Licence to Operate (SLTO) is an increasingly multifaceted and multistakeholder risk that can impact investment decisions. Community challenges to broader political and economic decisions have given rise to protest delaying or stopping projects or closing mines and has led to loss of life (Ernst and Young, 2016). Some governments are now giving greater powers to stakeholders to make the final decision on approving mining and metals activities (EY, 2016). With billions of dollars in project investment at stake, ongoing engagement, collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders is crucial and mutually beneficial solutions are increasingly expected (EY, 2016). It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks (and opportunities) associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the necessary level of trust with investors and stakeholders to underpin its activities (CRIRSCO, 2016). Whereas mine reconciliation is a well-established month-end process for most modern mining operations, the resource sector has yet to endorse uniform reporting factors against which model accuracy and metal recovery can be formally assessed. Logically, any comprehensive reconciliation framework should facilitate comparison between period reserve, mine and mill and production figures. Historically, Parker’s F Series ratios (Parker, 2012) are often used in some form by mine operators, although they are rarely shared externally, as formal definitions have yet to be accepted. This paper presents a structural extension to the reconciliation process, wherein resource ratios (R Series factors) are used to quantify the long-term impact of the information effect, together with dilution and ore loss. A case study from the El Limón Guajes (ELG) Mine Complex in Mexico is used to demonstrate how an R Factor Series can be implemented to facilitate operation optimisation, over and above conventional F Series reconciliation treatments. This approach is applicable to any mining operation.

Fluctuations in periodic reconciliations between the mine and the mill are an expected and common experience in mining and processing operations. These fluctuations are caused in part by errors in the estimates of tonnage and grade of the mined material as well as errors in the millÆs assessment of the material processed. Keeping these errors small and unbiased is an important aspect of an efficient operation whose primary goal is to derive maximum benefit from the exploitation of the mineral resource.These fluctuations in periodic reconciliations can also mask subtle but economically important problems which may take years to identify and resolve. Such problems can result from a poorly-conceived model of the mineralisation which affects both the spatial distribution of the ore as well as the tonnage - grade distribution over the range of cut-off grades. Poorly conceived models of the mineral resources and ore distribution can arise as a result of insufficient and inadequate?drilling and sampling of the mineralisation, inappropriate?application of geological?constraints in the estimation process and the use of inappropriate methods to estimate the block grade distribution. This paper presents three case studies from gold and copper mining operations, two of which experienced significant problems with their mine to mill reconciliations over extended periods of time. For the gold mine in case study 1, sampling problems were ultimately considered to be the main cause of the poor reconciliations between grade control predictions and the mill which persisted over a period of 18 months. In addition, incorrect application of resource modelling methods contributed significantly to a mismatching of the mill capacity with the mine at the beginning of operations. For the underground copper mine in case study 2, a change in the approach taken to resource modelling brought marked improvements in ore definition and more accurate predictions of ore grade and better production forecasts.The third case study describes the background to the expansion of production to exploit a large tonnage of lower-grade stockwork mineralisation in an open pit gold mine. Several years of favourable Mine to Mill reconciliation data from the mining and processing of higher grade and lower grade stockwork styles of gold mineralisation provided the confidence in the approach to grade control to support the expansion plans during a period of low gold prices.The paper is intended to complement the discussion of mineral resource estimation methods and risks in Section 6.1.3 of the Mine ManagersÆ Handbook to be published by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (Schofield, 2012).CITATION:Schofield, N A, Moore, J and Carswell, J T, 2012. The final arsenic bearing waste products at the majority of metallurgical and chemical enterprises are cakes in which arsenic is present in the form of calcium arsenate. Burial of cakes demands construction of special burial sites and does not guarantee reliable protection from arsenic penetration into the ground and surface waters. Under laboratory conditions we developed technology for processing calcium arsenate cakes with obtaining low toxic products suitable for long-term storage, meeting environmental requirements. The investigations have shown that thermal processing of briquetted mixtures of cakes containing 15 - 20 per cent weight of pyrite under the temperature of 873 - 923¦K during 45 - 60 minutes gives briquettes sufficiently hard for transportation and long-term storage. Arsenic, under high sulphidisation temperature is bonded into low solubility non-volatile iron sulphide bearing compounds having chemical properties similar to the natural arsenic compounds. Solubility of the obtained products in neutral, acid and alkaline media was investigated during long period of time (three to 12 months). It was determined that arsenic content in the solutions did not exceed the norms for cultural and welfare basins and fish-ponds.

Development and Validation of Ore Characterisation Test and its Use in Variability Campaigns of Comminution Circuits Impact testing was developed by assessing the fragmentation characteristics of ore samples after controlled impact. Standard methods are, however, limited to relatively large and coarse samples, which thus precludes their use in early stages of projects, as well as where only drill cores are available. The method described in this paper is based on the same concepts of controlled ore breakage, but using relatively smaller samples. It is particularly useful in assessing the variability of ore characteristics in early stages of greenfield projects, as well as in predicting the performance of existing grinding circuits. A validation program was carried out in which a good adherence to the original test results was obtained. The results were used for (a) simulation of a copper comminution circuit as a function of the ore characteristics, and (b) evaluation of sampling protocols used for assessing fragmentation characteristics.

In terms of improving the blasted material quality, the company has placed emphasis on accuracy in the drilling process and documenting what has been drilled. By applying state of the art technology to the common automation platform, developed for the surface drilling market, major steps in improving overall drilling productivity and blasting performance have been achieved. Organo-sulphur-based collectors (eg xanthates, dithiocarbamates and dithiophosphates) are widely used in the flotation of sulphide minerals. Xanthates (ROC(=S)Sû), for example, adsorb strongly at sulphide mineral surfaces, in a reaction that is electrochemically coupled with the reduction of dissolved oxygen. One of the oxygen reduction products, hydrogen peroxide, reacts directly with dissolved xanthate, leading to its oxidative decomposition. Experimental work has been conducted, using ethyl xanthate, to understand the molecular mechanism by which hydrogen peroxide reacts with xanthates. A number of degradation products have been identified, some of which have not been reported previously. This oxidative decomposition reaction pathway is discussed in the broader context of xanthate decomposition in flotation systems. One of the identified ethyl xanthate decomposition products, ethyl perxanthate (ROC(=S)SOû), has been observed in the process water of a number of mineral processing operations. The interaction of this molecule with goethite (α-FeOOH) particles, typical of that found in tailings dams, has been studied in more detail using attenuated total reflectance (ATR)-FTIR. The ethyl perxanthate molecule has been found to coordinate to iron (FeIII) at the goethite surface, and undergo a surface-catalysed decomposition process. In the presence of both PbII and goethite, a ternary surface complex is formed, where ethyl perxanthate is coordinated directly to surface adsorbed PbII atoms. The results obtained give some insight into the environmental fate of ethyl xanthate in tailings streams, and a basis on which to consider the environmental importance of such species in tailings dams. Strategies for the destruction of residual xanthate levels in waste water streams are discussed in terms of the likely reaction products.

The transition from exploration to feasibility is a stage in the development of mineral resource projects that is frequently not handled well. The transition marks a point in the project development process where resource evaluation priorities change significantly from the discovery of mineralisation and the rapid assessment of the potential tenor of the mineralised system, to the detailed assessment of the deposit.   Information used in the exploration process tends to be of a qualitative or theoretical nature initially, but gradually becomes more quantitative in character as geological knowledge relating to individual prospects grows.   The transition from discovery and rapid exploration of a new deposit occurs at a relatively early stage in project development, coinciding with the first attempt to prepare a resource estimate for the deposit. Fundamental assumptions regarding both structural and grade continuity and uncertainty inherent in existing information need to be made so that they themselves may be addressed during the collection of additional data.   The effective commencement of feasibility studies involve the introduction of new accountabilities either as a result of appointment of a project manager, and through needing to be able to quantify: ò     the quality of data being collected for resource evaluation purposes; ò     confidence associated with resource estimates; and ò     the need to develop an audit trail for the project, required to make the resource evaluation decision-making process as transparent as possible.   Quality assurance is a concept to which exploration geologists have frequently had little exposure. Being able to demonstrate the quality of data used in feasibility studies is, however, a crucial component of the overall risk management and reduction.   Development of a transparent audit trail for data assists in demonstrating the quality of data which is frequently perceived to translate directly to confidence inherent in resource estimates.   Establishing procedures for geological data collection and management also provides a more reliable framework for making decisions that impact on project execution, again resulting in improved confidence in resource estimates and associated geoscientific data.   Regular, independent technical audits, in principle similar to audits conducted for the ongoing certification of standards compliant quality assurance systems, are a major, positive factor in effective project management and execution.   Information used in project evaluation, feasibility and development must be based on facts. Facts are effectively observations that are ideally made systematically, recorded in a systematic manner, and by being collected effectively are not subject to change.   Effectively managing the transition from exploration to resource evaluation, feasibility and project development involves recognising the nature of changes in the nature, detail and scope of geoscientific data required at each stage of project development. In doing so it is essential to: ò     recognise when the change occurs (as early as preparation of the initial resource estimate for a project); ò     accept that the change may not be gradual; and, ò     ensure that the project evaluation team is adequately resourced.   These objectives require recognition of the value of previous experience and the need to instill a true team approach amongst both staff and contractors associated with the project. Regular formal and informal communications between staff, contractors and other stakeholders in the project are an essential tool in ensuring personnel are aware of factors affecting their role in the project.

The design work undertaken by Rock Mechanics Technology (now part of Golder Associates (Golder)) has played a major part in successfully establishing mechanised room and pillar working in Indian coalmines, both for the development of new districts and for the re-establishment of old districts prior to pillar extraction on panel retreat.Golder has used appropriate design of pillars, extraction sequences and final snook sizes to minimise ground control risks during pillar extraction. Where the strata will not cave reliably, partial extraction systems leaving either a crush pillar or a substantial yield pillar have been adopted.Remote monitoring of selected pillars during the extraction process using stress cells, extensometry and convergence measurements provides confirmation of pillar behaviour and verification of designs.A new telltale device, giving a visible warning of impending caving, is now installed at all Indian pillar extraction sites and is proving very successful.CITATION:MacAndrew, K M, Garcia, A S and Gregson, I D, 2014. The effect of blast loads on beams is one of the main issues in the analysis of steel structure. In this study, experimental tests on steel beam under blast loading, and also numerical simulation by the Autodyn software to analyse these structures, is discussed. Experiments on steel beam size of 12 by Emulite4 explosive with 30 mm diameter and cortex is done. This paper discusses the methods used in the design of flotation plants, including benchscale batch and locked cycle tests and pilot plant trials. Two case studies are presented, one for the Cadia Hill Gold Mine and the other for the Hellyer copper, zinc and lead plant. These case studies present different problems with widely different target grind sizes, liberation characteristics and HellyerÆs sequential flotation circuit versus CadiaÆs æsimpleÆ copper/gold flotation circuit. They have a common theme in that pyrite forms the principal floatable concentrate diluent. Hellyer ore contains finely disseminated chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, and tetrahedrite. The flotation plant design was based on extensive benchscale testwork (including locked cycle tests) on drill core and many months of operation of a 30 tonne per hour æpilot plantÆ, using the old Cleveland Tin Mine process plant suitably modified for the duty. The Cadia concentrator was designed on an extensive benchscale variability testwork program, approximately a dozen locked cycle tests conducted on drill core and two weeks of continuous pilot plant trials on three separate samples obtained from an adit into the orebody. The orebody is a monzonite porphyry with disseminated chalcopyrite/bornite/pyrite of very low grade (0.17 per cent Cu, 0.73 g/t Au). Methods used to establish the appropriate flotation circuits for the treatment of the Hellyer and Cadia ores, as well as the interpretation of the testwork data, are discussed in this paper. Plant performance is reviewed in the context of predicted versus operational performance.

The title of my presentation is `Nursing One's Resources', words that fit a young organisation like Ross Mining and words we had to apply to reach our current level as a company. To get to where we are, we had to nurse, foster and treat carefully all our available resources in the widest sense of the word, namely: ò a stock or supply that can be drawn upon (funds, mineral resources, human resources); ò the means available to achieve an end; ò skills in devising expedients; and ò practical ingenuity. I do not claim that Ross Mining is now the perfect mining company. However, we have become a profitable, dividend- paying, gold mining and exploration company which is to our knowledge, currently the cheapest gold producer on the Australian continent. Nursing our resources got us where we are and will guide us in our future development. The words `nursing one's resources' are I feel particularly applicable to mining-as I like to argue that the extractive mining industry has a social responsibility to optimise the metal output and value from each orebody which is being exploited, and preferably leave no metal behind. Likewise, a modem company cannot survive into the future without maximising and optimising its human resource potential. In this presentation I would like to present a number of actual examples of nursing one's physical and human resources. Before I do that, I will give a brief background to Ross Mining. Ross Mining NL is a young Queensland-based company that gained its stock exchange listing in September 1987 and that poured its first gold in 1989 from its own developed Belyando Mine, located in Central Queensland. We have now reached the stage of a medium-size gold producer, producing approximately 70 000 ounces of gold per year, mainly from the Yandan Gold Mine, also in Central Queensland. Our production is set to increase to over 100 000 ounces in the near future. Recent increases in our resource base have secured us a future of ten to 15 years. As a young, newly listed company, we faced all the dangers that most new small floats do as a new entrant into an established industry. However, one advantage of being young and perhaps naive, is summed up by the following Zen Buddist saying: In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few. A mining company's main assets are the sum of its resource base and the skills and talents of its people. Attempting to optimise both the physical and human resources within the company has been to-date the key to our success. The first example I would like to present is linked to the exploitation of the Belyando Gold Mine in Central Queensland.

The local cumulative distribution function (lcdf) of a selective mine unit (SMU) can be estimated by conditional simulations using the statistics derived from the sample points, generating multiple equally probable scenarios. Conditional simulations permit the evaluation of the lcdf at any support, taking into account the spatial variability, ie the variogram, and the two statistical moments, mean and variance, of the conditioning samples. The SMU ore losses and dilution depend on the mining method and mining equipment selectiveness that, in its turn, depends on the predicted block size. A new approach to predict ore loss and dilution was developed in this study. Monte Carlo simulation is used to randomly generate a grade value derived from the lcdf at the mining stage (Zs_mc(t)) in order to make a decision about the SMU destination, ie processing plant (ORE) or waste dump (WASTE). If Zs_mc(t) is lower or equal to the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is ORE and, conversely, if Zs_mc(t) is higher than the cut-off (Z_cut-off) the block is WASTE. Considering these binary destinations ORE/WASTE, at the mining time t, and combining each realisation of the simulated random function Zcs_i (X), there are four possibilities for each SMU simulated value: 1. the block was simulated as ore and is actually ore (OO), 2. the block was simulated as ore and is actually waste (OW),3. the block was simulated as waste and is actually ore (WO), and 4. the block was simulated as waste and is actually waste (WW).The dilution factor is given by possibility 3 (WO), while the ore loss factor is represented by possibility 2 (OW). These results comprise the classical classification and reconciliation plots used in the mining industry. The new procedure proposed in this paper is based on the use of all the equally probable simulations to define the ore loss and dilution factors. An application of this methodology was carried out at Vale's iron mine in Brazil. The grade of silica was simulated and 50 multiple equally probable 3D models were generated. The mean and the standard deviation of the ore tonnage (OO + WO) for the 50 realisations, was 233 Mt and 0.5 Mt, respectively. The mean grade increased for the diluted ore (OO + WO) as well as their respective coefficient of variation (CV). The CV increases from 62 per cent in the undiluted ore (OO), to 101 per cent in the ore, considering the dilution factor (OO + WO). The mean ore loss (OW) was 10 Mt and the waste tonnage dilution (WO) was 9 Mt.
