"In the 1990s metal prices were trending in a long-term decline and the usual cost-cutting exercises were adopted. Cuts to research and development made innovation difficult and the outlook was grim. But necessity is a strong motivator, and these conditions spurred the Mine to Mill movement that optimised across organisational ‘silos’ and utilised new technology tools, innovative software and increased computing power. Many applications of Mine to Mill exploited the fact that comminution is usually the site processing bottleneck and blasting is more efficient at breaking rock than grinding. This approach sought to: understand and characterise rock breakage from mining to the milldevelop models and simulators for blast design, fragmentation, crusher and mill circuitsdevelop tools to measure in real time the particle size distribution of rocks on run-of-mine (ROM) muck piles, at the primary crusher truck dump pocket and on conveyorsensure effective communication across the silos between geologists, blast design engineers, mining engineers and metallurgists.These methods and the technology tools available in the 1990s were widely adopted at numerous sites around the world with significant benefits. Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill throughput increases of 10–20 per cent were common. This was the advance the industry desperately needed. It was low capital cost; it was obvious. It was here to stay.Except, in too many cases, it didn’t. In the minerals price boom of the 2000s Mine to Mill was no longer necessary to ‘survive’, even though it was still good business. Some operations, including some of the early success stories, slipped back to old habits of optimising within organisation silos instead of across them. Fortunately, other operators still embraced Mine to Mill and developed new techniques. Mine to Mill was still successful, but not as widely adopted as we had expected it to be. Now the boom has ended and operations are again under cost pressure. Since these are the same circumstances that created Mine to Mill, it seems time to achieve the wider adoption. Since the 1990s many new or advanced technology tools are now available for Mine to Mill projects: blasthole sensors, new explosives formulations, new blasting techniques and modelling, ore tracking devices, improved image analysis to determine size, texture and colour of coarse ore, grade sensors, whole-stream simulation tools, and even more powerful computing hardware and data analysis software. If we could achieve so much in the 1990s, how much more can we achieve today when we have the same imperative, the same potential and a larger number of high technology tools?Citation:Cameron, P, Drinkwater, D and Pease, J, 2016. Adequate estimation of equipment costs is a key factor in a feasibility study and in evaluation of design alternatives for mining and mineral processing projects. Inaccurate early cost estimation could lead to the elimination of investment benefits. However, this estimation is complex and time consuming because of data accessibility problems and consequently access to a rapid, up-to-date and accurate tool is desirable for carrying out cost estimations.This paper describes the development of models for estimating capital and operating costs for a jaw crusher, which is used as the primary crusher for a wide variety of mineral beneficiation plants, applying single and multivariate regression analyses, together with the design of experiment approach, based on principal component analysis. Explanatory variables include gape size, length of feed opening and power as numeric (quantitative) variables and toggle type (single or double) and the existence of extra heavy duty construction as categorical (qualitative) variables. The performance of each model has been investigated and comparing the estimated R-squared (R2) of each model, the best was selected and its validity examined. The cost models include the capital and operating costs along with the operating cost components. The results indicate that the suggested best cost model is sufficiently accurate for use in feasibility studies.

Over the past few years, there has been an emerging relationship between business and civil society, especially NGOs. This relationship has the potential to bring about significant change, identifying common ground between commercial and societal interests. The mining industry has been a leader in acknowledging the need for community consultation and engagement. This paper argues that partnerships can make a very significant contribution to the industry as it comes to terms with the dilemma of an open economic system pushing against a closed ecological system.The paper will pose a number of questions: where is the locus for debate about sustainability in the mining sector?; how well embedded within companies are the new competencies that Leon Davis first identified in 1995 for the mining sector?; how has education for mining engineers or exploration geologists changed to prepare people for what are very different expectations within the working environment?; how well is the industry doing in managing its own environmental impact and what is its responsibility to an agenda for sustainability which extends beyond its own operations?;and how can NGO partnerships contribute to more sustainable outcomes? The paper does not aim to answer these questions, but to explore them in the hope that the issues and possibilities raised will contribute to advancing progress towards sustainability within the industry.

Coal is a valuable energy source in New Zealand and has been mined from the West Coast for over 100 years. Stockton Mine is New Zealand's largest opencast coal producer supplying around 1.5 Mt of hard coking and thermal coal to international markets annually. The Stockton Plateau forms an extensive, gently inclined dip slope on erosion resistant Lower Eocene Brunner Coal Measures unconformably overlying basement rocks. The dip slope rises 600 - 1000 masl, locally dissected by fault scarps and present-day fluvial systems, some of which are deeply incised. Within the Mt Augustus Mining Block overburden comprises of a 30 - 40 m thick sequence of fluviatile, coarse to granular coal measure sandstones. High quality coking coal is preserved as a gently dipping, 10 - 12 m thick seam. High and sometimes very steep cliffs of jointed overburden shape the skyline escarpment, above steep forested slopes and gullies. As mining has progressed at Mt Augustus individual coal blocks are progressively becoming more technically challenging. This paper outlines the scientific approach taken by Solid Energy International and mining contractors to carefully unlock many thousands of tons of coal whilst protecting nearby flora and fauna from the impacts of dislodged rock and other blasting side-effects. The strategy involved: an expert-driven onsite risk assessment,formulation of a management plan to manage impacts,conducting an in situ vibration research program, andanalysis of results and operational designs to eliminate potential environmental problems.

Current spontaneous combustion index parameters such as SHT, CPT/RIT and R70 self-heating rate all have deficiencies that need clarifying from a risk management perspective. In some instances they can produce a false negative evaluation and in others they can produce a false positive evaluation. These tests all use a relative rating scheme that does not provide any indication of the time it takes for a spontaneous combustion event to develop, nor do they consider the moderating influence of moisture present in the coal on self-heating rate in the low temperature oxidation region. This is viewed as a major deficiency since the true self-heating behaviour of broken coal is primarily a function of time that is governed by the interaction of the initial boundary conditions (initial ambient temperature and moisture state) with the reactivity of the coal (both intrinsic coal reactivity and accelerated self-heating from reactive pyrite if present). The use of discrete element modelling (DEM) is widespread in the materials handling field, and is used for many applications. One of the important limitations in using DEM is the number of particles that can be modelled, with this limitation often resulting in increasing the minimum particle size in the simulation. This restriction on minimum particle size is usually accommodated in the calibration process where the parameters in the simulation are chosen in such a way as to reflect the presence of smaller sized particles, and in typical applications such as transfer chutes this is standard practice. However, in the application of vibrating screens the inclusion of the ‘fines’ is critically important due to their influence on the screening efficiency. In reality, the presence of fines reduces the screening efficiency for a number of reasons; however, the main mechanism that will be addressed in this study is the effect of adhering fines. This is where the fines adhere to the larger particles and are carried over into the lump stream. The approach for this study will be to firstly consider the relatively simple mechanical sieving process used in the determination of particle size distribution, and then this will be expanded to consider the application of vibrating screens.CITATION:Donohue, T J, Chen, W, Katterfeld, A and Reid, S, 2017. The morphological changes that gold undergoes during transport in gravel-bed rivers are a function of transport distance in particular, as well as bedload material, river gradient and velocity, and bed roughness. Gold size, shape and outline are modified by abrasion, flattening, folding and breakage during transport. The resultant morphological characteristics can be used to predict source types, source location and transport distance, as well as the origin and dispersal patterns of gold in ancient placers where the transport history is unknown.

A gold mine in north-eastern Africa has expanded throughput from 5 to 10 Mt/y in recent years. The original carbon regeneration kiln was incapable of achieving required throughput or meeting process conditions to reactivate the carbon due to heavy fouling by high molecular weight frothers and collectors. A new high temperature kiln was required.The design criteria for the carbon reactivation kiln and associated equipment were revised, then implemented in close cooperation with a kiln vender who had previously supplied kilns operating successfully on highly fouled carbon. The result is a whole facility, holistically designed to achieve the technical criteria.The new carbon reactivation facility has been operating since 1 July 2014. What have we learned? What has performed to expectations? What could be done better?This paper presents lessons learnt regarding the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the Ausenco Carbon Reactivation Kiln. ‘Lessons’ are associated with threats and opportunities (risks) that have that have been realised. The environmental impact of mining and evolving environmentallegislation has received increased attention worldwide in the last two decades (Bradfield, Shultz and Stone, 1996). The potential impacts associated with unstable spoil dumps from mine operations is the focus of concern both by the mining industry, environmental regulatory agencies and members of the public. Engineered slopes of mine spoils may be stable at the end of construction, but they can deteriorate over time. There is thus the need to increase the base of knowledge on the existing practices of spoil dump design and rehabilitation. Efficient engineering design and systematic economic evaluation of spoil dump reshaping techniques for mine rehabilitation assists in maintaining the expected standards of environmental compliance. As part of the overall approach for effective engineering design ofspoil dumps, a comprehensive, computational and efficient tool isrequired for assessing the economics and productivity of existing spoil dump reshaping practices for efficient mine rehabilitation. Such a design tool is useful in linking current spoil dump environmental management practices with engineering design planning and economic impact evaluation. This paper identifies the processes for the economic impact evaluation for existing spoil dump reshaping practices and proposed final site dump designs. Selection of an efficient spoil dump design at optimum costs will ensure operational efficiency. A case study is presented identifying economic impact evaluation in earthmoving equipment selection and the costs involved for the reshaping of spoil dumps to that of varying final site designs.

"Column flotation has been successfully applied to iron ore concentration since the 1980s with the goal of reducing silica content and allowing for the efficient production of pellet feed. Since then, columns have been widely used in iron ore processing due to: their lower capital and operational costs when compared to conventional cells their ability to generate higher concentrate grades and recoveries.Currently, more than 100 columns have been installed within Brazilian iron ore processing circuits for rougher, cleaner and scavenger duties. Despite it being a well-established approach, several technological advances have improved column design, accessories and performance. The Gold Ridge Mine is an open-cut gold mine in the Solomon Islands. The mine is owned and operated by Gold Ridge Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ross Mining NL. At the invitation of the Solomon Island Government, project construction commenced in July 1997 and gold production commenced in August 1998. The mine is the countryÆs first, and represents a major milestone in the development of the Solomon Islands. At the time of project approval and construction, there was a growing awareness in the country of the potential impacts of mining in the tropics, partly due to unfavourable publicity surrounding a number of other mining operations in the Pacific region. The management of environmental impacts was therefore an important consideration in the approval of the project, and continues to receive a high level of attention from the Government and community. Ross Mining did not commit to the Gold Ridge Project until it had satisfied itself that all waste rock and tailings could be safely contained on-site, and that the standards normally expected of a mine in Australia could be met. Ross Mining approached the approval, construction, and operation of the Gold Ridge Mine with a set of operating principles that met Government and community concerns. These were:best practice environmental management; operation of the mine in accordance with standards expected of mining operations in Australia; independent peer review of key technical aspects; on-going consultation with Government and community; and equitable transfer of wealth to landowners and the local community. As a consequence, the Gold Ridge Mine has developed into a successful mining operation with a high level of support from local landowners, the general community and the Central and Provincial Governments of the Solomon Islands.

Three large deposits of good quality lignite were located and delineated in the Central Otago region between October 1978 and July 1979. The program was initiated and funded by Mines Division of the Ministry of Energy as part of the national Coal Resource Survey. The exploration work was carried out by Lime and Marble Limited on a contract basis (Bowman, 1980). The three deposits were all potentially mineable by open cast methods and possessed combined indicated and, inferred reserves in the order of 1000 x 106 tonnes. They ranked with the previously discovered Eastern Southland 1ignites and as such constituted an important national energy resource. Fifteen months later a second more detailed investigation of similar duration was undertaken by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB). The objective was to upgrade and refine the geological data base of all of the nine South Island 1ignite deposits in order to make preliminary economic assessments of their potential. Again Lime and Marble Limited acted as the exploration operator (Bowman, 1981a, 1981b, 1981c).

Considering the capital outlay, running costs and inherent difficulties of backfilling operations at depth the benefits need to be clearly established, quantified and then exploited. Expansion of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company towards even deeper, highly faulted ground, and the process of establishing codes of practice for the management of rockfalls and rockbursts, required that a sound support strategy be formulated. This paper describes the derivation of an overall backfilling strategy on Vaal Reefs. Use was made of experience gained over some 12 years with backfilling. Numerical modelling was used to estimate potential benefits of backfilling the deepest mining areas still to be extracted. In exploiting a probably unique opportunity, two contiguous mining areas bounded by the same major geological structures, were compared. One was extensively backfilled and the other not at all. Shaft sinking through a backfilled stope added another dimension to the database. Backfilling was introduced in 1985 and several potential spin-offs were expected. These included improved local strata control for fall of ground and rockburst conditions, regional benefits in rock mass stability and mine ventilation optimisation.

During the lifetime of an open pit mining project, each stage from exploration activities to exploitation and mine closure produces disturbances on the mining region. Mined land reclamation plans establish constructive solutions to rehabilitate the disturbed areas. Open pit mining as an effective method for exploitation of a wide range of orebodies especially for massive reserves of shallow metallic substances has exhaustive and harmful environmental effects on the mining project region. Nowadays, closure and reclamation stage in a mining project is emphatically enforced by the relevant environmental protection regulations in many countries. It is therefore obvious that closure and reclamation costs of an open pit mining project, as costs of other stages of project, must be estimated to enter the planning and design processes in open pit mining. Post-mining land use is the most important factor to recognise closure and reclamation costs. Thus, using a model to define optimal land use in planning phase of an open pit mining project is necessary in this regard. In this project a model was developed to define optimal land use regarding different sections of open pit mines such as pit(s), waste dump(s), tailing pond(s), roads, areas for onsite facilities and free land zones which are not mined. TOPSIS and PROMETHE techniques were applied to create the developed model. Lumber production was recognised as the optimal post-mining land use for the pit area of the case study in this project.

The TerraSpec is a compact field portable mineral analyser that uses non-destructive reflectance spectroscopy for mineral identification. The instrument uses and measures infrared and visible light that is absorbed by certain covalent and molecular bonds (AlOH, FeOH, MgOH, CO32-, OH, H2O and NH4) within the lattice of a mineral at specific wavelengths producing an absorption spectral profile. A variety of minerals can be detected including clays, micas, carbonates, and hydroxides as well as some sulfates and silicates. However, not all minerals are detectable, such as quartz and feldspar. Alteration minerals replacing volcanic rocks have been studied for several epithermal prospects in the lower Waitekauri Valley (Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek) and a geothermal field in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. At the Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek prospects previous XRD investigations determined well developed clay mineral zonation with illite in the west (Sovereign and Jubilee) grading into interstratified illite-smectite (Scotia) and smectite (Jasper Creek) to the east. Although the percent of illite within interstratified illite-smectite could not be determined and some illite-rich illite-smectite (>90 per cent illite) and some smectite-rich illite-smectite (>90 per cent smectite) could be misidentified as illite or smectite respectively, the TerraSpec survey determined the same zonation of illite to illite-smectite and smectite. Common chlorite, rare calcite and local kaolinite were also detected. At the geothermal field, the TerraSpec was primarily used to determine the occurrence of kaolinite, dickite and alunite, which form in acid conditions. Widely spaced (every 50 to 100 m) XRD results are in excellent agreement with closely spaced (every 5 to 10 m) TerraSpec results that further determined the occurrence of these minerals in previously unrecognised intervals. It also determined the occurrence of zoned smectite, illite-smectite, illite, and chlorite alteration. Overall, the TerraSpec is a rapid mineral identification technique that is very useful in delineating the occurrence and distribution of certain minerals in both epithermal deposits and geothermal fields. Although the TerraSpec cannot detect as many minerals as XRD, the TerraSpec allows data collection at a sampling scale and speed (real time) that is not practical by XRD.

The objective of this paper was to determine if recent advances in numerical electromagnetic wave propagation modelling techniques could be used to study the propagation of GPS signals over arbitrary terrain. Specifically the effects of diffraction and multipath were to be modelled accurately for propagation over arbitrary terrain surfaces defined by a digital terrain model. Ideally the model was to be in three dimensions and cover an area of a few square kilometres with a simulation height of a few hundred metres. Simulations were to run on current technology PC's with run times less than a few hours. A relatively new technique that involves a numerical solution to the Parabolic Equations can be used to solve for two-dimensional propagation over any type of terrain. The PE provides a direct solution of Maxwell's wave equations by approximating the Helmholtz scalar wave equation. This technique does not rely on the study of individual ray paths as used in the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD). It was decided to develop a two dimensional Parabolic Equation code, using the Fourier Split/Step method that allowed propagation over arbitrary terrain (; ; ). The model boundary conditions assumed that the satellite transmission was a plane wave, and that the lower boundary was a perfect reflector. Propagation simulations from the model accurately provide the amplitude and phase of the propagated plane wave at all points within the model domain. The PE model was used to study the effects of diffraction and multipath caused by various types of terrain commonly found in an open cut mining environment. The study of diffraction errors was relatively simple, because we are simply concerned with amplitude of the signal as it diffracts about an obstacle. If the amplitude is above the level receivable by a GPS receiver then the diffraction error can be obtained from the geometry of the terrain obstacle. The study of multipath is more complex, as the computed phase from the PE model is ambiguous and the presence of multipath can only be inferred. Thus the absolute magnitude of the nmltipath error is not currently determinable, though the results of some new work is shown here. This paper shows that diffraction effects can cause significant errors in range. It also shows the effects that multipath has on the received amplitude of the signal and the received phase of the signal. A discussion is made of further work that is presently underway that will allow the direct determination of the multipath error by comparing the ambiguous phase with a reference phase.

Concentrator plants intake the ore from the mine and produce concentrates by extracting valuable minerals in a succession of process steps. Controlling the extraction process and detecting changes in the process requires updated information on a minute basis. Moreover, due to economical reasons, one must also collect metallurgical samples on a daily basis for monthly reporting.In this paper, we present how slurry samplers were installed in a Cu-Ni flotation plant to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. An on-stream elemental analyser at the plant is used for flotation process control by taking samples from selected process streams. Two process streams, the flotation feed and tail, are also equipped with metallurgical samplers. The metallurgical samplers were designed to have low head loss, be robust and easy to maintain and to collect slurry samples in a reliable way for the metallurgical accounting.Samples were collected by different sampler types and we discuss the uncertainty arising from sampling in the assays. Variographic analysis was carried out on the process data in order to find periodic components in the process, and estimate the correct number of shift sample increments and measurement error components. The metallurgical samplers were proven to be reliable devices with zero downtime and no sanding issues in the main process flows. In addition, we show that the tail measurement is the most important one for the plant recovery calculation, which emphasises the importance of the sampling accuracy in the tail stream.CITATION:Lohilahti, J, Korpela, T, Minkkinen, P and McPherson, B, 2014.
