It is well known that hydrogen is introduced into iron or steel as a result of many chemical processes (acid pickling, electrolytic cleaning, plating, etc.). One of the reactions that has been of recent interest1 is the reaction between an iron surface and water vapor. It was shown a few years ago2-4 that hydrogen can be introduced into steel at an accelerated rate during abrasion as a result of this reaction. Grun-berg and Scott have also observed that water in mineral oil lubricants increases pitting failure in ball bearings5 and they have suggested that hydrogen from the water is the primary cause of this effect.' In this laboratory, the question was raised as to whether or not hydrogen is also introduced into the metal surface of a bearing as a result of the decomposition of the hydrocarbon lubricant itself, and an experiment was performed to try to find a satisfactory answer. All steel parts contain some residual hydrogen. Therefore, it appeared that the best way to carry out this experiment without the need for highly accurate quantitative analyses was to use deuterium as a tracer. The natural abundance of deuterium in H2 is only 0.015 pct. The tracer was obtained in the form of deuteroparaffin (CD,(CDJ, CD,) and 0.25 g were dissolved in 20 cc of mineral oil to form the lubricant to be used in the tests. The bearings used were New Departure Type QOLOO ball bearings with a ball diam of 0.187 in. Prior to adding the mineral oil-deuteroparaffin lubricant, the bearings were cleaned in warm trichloroethylene to remove the packing grease. After packing with the new deuterated lubricant, the bearings were operated in a bearing fatigue test machine under a radial load of 190 lb and a thrust load of 190 lb at a speed of 3800 rpm. The expected life under these conditions is about 500 hr. Two tests were made; one for a period of 27 hr and the other for a period of 102 hr. The bearings achieved a temperature of 120o F during the tests. When the tests were stopped the balls were mechanically removed from the bearings and were immediately placed in liquid nitrogen to reduce degassing until the analysis for deuterium could be made. Before analyzing, the balls were warmed to room temperature and scrubbed with several degreasing agents to remove all traces of the deuteroparaffin mixture. This cleaning procedure was shown to be satisfactory by running a control test in which one ball bearing was subjected to all parts of the test except running in the fatigue machine. The hydrogen and deuterium were removed from the balls using a hot extraction apparatus attached to a mass spectrometer. Four balls from each bearing were analyzed. Each one was analyzed separately by removing it from a cold storage volume of the hot extraction apparatus and transferring it to the oven tube with a magnet. As the gases were evolved they were analyzed with the mass spectrometer. Since the hydrogen and deuterium pass through steel in the atomic form and since there are many more hydrogen atoms than deuterium atoms in the sample, the probability of forming an HD molecule is greater than forming a D2 molecule. For this reason the evolution of HD and H was followed as each ball was placed in the oven. The results showed that as each ball from the test bearing was dropped into the oven, the mass spectrometer recording of the HD evolution increased by about ten divisions. When balls from the control test bearing were dropped into the oven, the increase was about one division or less. The hydrocarbon background in the mass spectrometer was also monitored to see if hydrocarbons or deuterocarbons were given off when the balls were dropped into the oven, but no change in the hydrocarbon peaks was observed. Since the balls contained a fair amount of residual hydrogen, isotope ratio measurements were made on the gas obtained from each ball. The D/H value found for those balls which had been operated in the fatigue testing machine was consistently about 0.3

The phase equilibria of the Hg-Th system over the composition range 0-100 pct Th and temperatures up to 1000°C have been studied for a small-volume, closed system. The solubility of Th in liquid Hg is about 5 pct at 300°C and decreases sharply with decreasing temperature. Two intermediate phases occur, Hg3 Th and HgTh. The structures of these are hexagonal (nonideally close-packed) and face-centered cubic, respectively. The HgTh phase decomposes eutectoidally at 400°-500°C. The solubility of Hg in solid thorium seems to be negligible. AFULL-phase diagram for this system would have to be defined on temperature-composition-pressure co-ordinates. This paper describes the pseudo phase diagram of a closed system, that is, where the alloy enclosed in a small volume equilibrates with a vapor pressure of mercury dictated by composition and temperature. Because of the experimental difficulties in studying a system of this nature, many of the phase relations can only be sketched. Alloy Preparation Alloys over the full range of composition were made from triple distilled mercury and one of two grades of thorium. For the bulk of the work, a calcium-reduced metal in sintered pellet form of reported 99+ pct total thorium content was used. Arc-melted specimens of this thorium gave a hardness of 135 VPN. The microstructure showed small primary dendrites of ThO2. A number of alloy compositions were made with a high-purity, iodide-decomposition thorium metal. The are-melted hardness of a button of this material was 35 VPN. Although the microstructure of the arc-melted specimens showed no dendrites of ThO2, there was definite evidence of an unidentified phase enveloping the grain bound-aries. There were no distinguishable differences between the constitution of alloys made with the two grades of thorium metal. Under normal conditions thorium is not wetted by liquid mercury. The film of ThO2 on all thorium metal cannot be penetrated by either liquid or vaporous mercury. It was therefore necessary to comminute thorium in the presence of mercury under such conditions that oxide films could not reform on the newly exposed metal surfaces. This was accomplished by the use of a high-speed, carbide-tipped rotary cutter incorporated in a chamber purged with argon and connected at the bottom to a demountable Vycor bulb containing a weighed amount of mercury. This experimental device is fully described in a separate paper.1 Alloy compositions were calculated by weighing the empty bulb, the bulb containing the mercury, and the bulb containing the mercury and the thorium chips. Many alloys were analyzed chemically for thorium and/or mercury after subsequent homogenization; the agreement between analyzed and calculated compositions was invariably very close. Bulbs containing the requisite amounts of mercury and fine thorium chips were clamped off, removed to a sealing unit, evacuated and sealed. Amalgamation under these conditions proceeded rapidly even at room temperature. To insure homogeneity, the specimens were annealed to 300-400°C. Alloys containing less than 30 pct Th remained pasty after all treatments, indicating an equilibrium condition of liquid plus solid. Alloys with more than 30 pct Th were transformed into a dark powdery product. These latter specimens were annealed for times of up to 1 week to complete interdiffusion. Many of the alloy compositions are pyrophoric. On exposure to air they oxidize with considerable evolution of heat to a mixture of ThO2 and free mercury. It was mandatory that alloy specimens be handled in a "dry box" purged thoroughly with argon. All X-ray diffraction specimens were powdered, screened, and sealed in capillary tubes within the dry box. Experimental Procedures Thermal analysis experiments, useful only in the mercury-rich region of the system, were conducted with the alloys in their original containers. A reentrant thermocouple well formed an integral part of the bulb. These bulbs were heated in a silicone oil bath and cooled in a dry ice-acetone mixture. The rates of heating and cooling were slowed by immersing the specimen bulb in a larger tube containing silicone oil. This provided a suitable thermal lag. In all tests, pure mercury was run as a basic standard. While the invariant reaction at about the melting point of mercury was detected by thermal analysis, the heat effect at the liquidus was not sufficient to produce an inflection in the cooling curve. It was necessary to determine the liquidus temperatures at the mercury-rich end of the system by "breaks" in electrical reslstivity versus temperature curves for individual alloys. MY subject covers the effect that recent metallurgy has had on operations at the Utah-Delaware mine. This mine is the old Highland Boy mine of Bingham Canyon, Utah, one that has now been in operation for about 30 years. It was first operated by Messrs. Weir and Newhouse as a gold mine, under direction of the Highland Boy Gold Mining Co. The ore was oxidized gold ore and it was treated on the property in a cyanidation plant. During the process of development, sulfide ore was found assaying about 5 per cent copper. It proved to be the discovery of what is yet the largest sulfide copper orebody in the State. The first shipment was made in December, 1896. A smelter was built in Salt Lake Valley to treat this ore and not long after the property was sold to the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. From 1900 to 1924, the mine was a large producer of direct-smelting ore which averaged for many years 4.5 per cent. copper, then later dropped to 2 per cent. copper. During the years 1912 to 1920, direct-smelting lead ore was also mined. In 1918'and 1919 ore developments at depth showed a decided increase in silica content and a porphyry sill so closely associated with the ore that it was impossible to mine the ore clean and it was found necessary to build a copper flotation Eoncentrator at Tooele. The mill had a capacity of 1000 tons a day and made a recovery of 90 per cent., and would have been responsible for a continuance of profitable operations had it not been for a slump in the copper market and the necessary high cost of mining ore on the lower levels. RESULTS OF SELECTIVE FLOTATION In 1924 the mine was on the point of a shutdown which had all the earmarks of being permanent; it was being operated at a heavy loss and preparations were made to pull the pumps and salvage the machinery. The plant at Tooele was remodelled for selective flotation by the Inter- national Smelting Co. in order to treat custom ores, and incidentally to clean up a possible 10,000 tons of lead-zinc ore which it was thought possible to get in the Utah-Delaware before shutting the mine down. Results were so encouraging that an effort was made to develop more lead-

In order to discuss the subject intelligently, it will be necessary to touch briefly on the forms in which sulphur is supposed to exist in coking coal to be carbonized in beehive or byproduct ovens. Sulphur is known to exist in coal as sulphides and sulphates, as can be determined experimentally. Then there is the so-called organic sulphur, i.e., sulphur in combination with the carbon, 'hydrogen, and oxygen of the coal, about which much has been written, but nothing definitely proven in an experimental way. In fact, so far. as we know, there never has been developed a satisfactory and conclusive method in the laboratory for the direct determination of organic sulphur. For most coking coals, it can be safely assumed that the preponderance of sulphur is in the form of pyrite (FeSz). When exposed to comparatively low temperatures during the coking process, it loses its sulphur according to the following chemical reaction: 7FeS2 = Fe7Ss + 6S. It will be seen, therefore, that six out of the 14 atoms of sulphur (or 42.8 per cent.) are expelled, or volatilized. FelSa remains in the coke as pyrrhotite, or magnetic sulphide of iron; this accounts for the highly magnetic properties of the powdered coke. A more commonly accepted reaction is FeS2 = FeS f S, in which the straight sulphide of iron is produced with 50 per cent. volatilization of sulphur. In the beehive methods of coke making, air is introduced in sufficient amounts to carry on the distilling and the coking processes, and the sulphur is oxidized along with the other volatile products: First, into sulphur dioxide (SO2), known by the pungent andsuffocating odoremitted from the trunnel head; second, into sulphuric anhydride (SOa); and, finally, into sulphuric acid, as it comes into contact with the air and moisture. In a properly regulated draft on a beehive oven, there is never complete combustion of the gases. In other words, the coking process should be carried on in a reducing atmosphere, and a low-grade producer gas kept issuing from the trunnel head. For coals of about 30 per cent. volatile matter, the ratio of air to gas is 3½ to 1. In complete combustion, the ratio is 6 to 1, producing an extremely high temperature

INTRODUCTION Object RATHER large amounts of titanium minerals and some zircon and monazite are being recovered from dune sands about 10 miles west of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. The Mining Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Southern Experiment Station, has been interested in developing additional large deposits of similar sands in other areas of Florida. The results of a field study have been published1 concerning the sands occurring on Trail Ridge which runs north and south about 30 miles southwest of Jacksonville. This investigation was undertaken in order to identify the opaque titanium minerals occurring in Trail Ridge and because of the economic importance of Florida titanium minerals. Nature of the Problem The minerals present in the heavy fractions (sp gr > 2.94) of the sands are principally opaque minerals; staurolite, zircon, sillimanite, tourmaline, kyanite, rutile, a small amount of corundum, traces of the zinc spinel gahnite and garnet. Epidote, monazite, hornblende and titanite are present in other dune sands but these minerals were not noted in the samples collected on Trail Ridge. All of the minerals except those which are opaque can be readily identified by the usual petrographic methods. However, opaque minerals cannot be examined satisfactorily by transmitted light. Polished sections of the opaque-mineral grains were examined but these sections did not furnish useful information. Consequently, it was necessary to use means other than the usual petrographic methods to identify them. Previous Investigations of Heavy Minerals in Florida Sands Martens2 has described the heavy minerals in the Florida beach sands and has classified the opaque minerals as ilmenite with minor amounts of leucoxene. Miller3 studied a number of sands collected by Ross and Mertie in Florida. He states that the material from the Florida beach and dune sands that commonly has been called ilmenite has essentially the chemical composition of the material that has been called arizonite.4 The X ray diffraction patterns of several samples indicated that the supposed ilmenite is essentially amorphous, with only weak lines corresponding to ilmenite, and hence the material is unlike the type of arizonite from Arizona. Opaque Titanium Minerals Rutile is essentially titanium dioxide. However, as pointed out by Dana,5 important amounts of Fee and Fe3 as well as Cb and Ta are reported in some analyses.

The estimation of the magnitude of pressure changes which occur in mine ventilation circuits is of primary importance to the mining engineer in making changes in an existing mine or in projecting the ventilation requirements of a new mine. It is a formidable task in many cases, because no adequate theory is available and empirical data are unreliable or even lacking. The common practice of increasing one's estimate of the mine static pressure by an arbitrary "safety factor" to compensate for the unknown is a poor substitute for accuracy. Generally little difficulty is encountered in calculating friction losses in mine airways. As long as the friction factor can be reliably estimated, the well-known Atkinson formula gives accurate results. However, it is in the determination of shock losses that the ventilation engineer encounters difficulty and is apt to resort to an arbitrary allowance. Shock losses may constitute as little as five or as much as twenty-five percent or more of the overall pressure drop in the mine, and such allowances are generally completely unsatisfactory. Since other shock losses have been covered by McElroy (1), this paper deals with a long-neglected source of shock and pressure change in ventilation circuits, divergence and convergence of airflows, here referred to by their more common mining terms, splits and junctions. PREVIOUS WORK There is practically no fundamental information available in ventilation literature on the splitting and junction of airflows, either in mining or mechanical engineering periodicals or handbooks. Fluid mechanics textbooks seemingly avoid the subject of divergence and convergence, except for brief empirical treatment. The only investigation reported for mine ventilation systems was by Weeks, et a1 (21), in 1933. Although applicable to the case of line brattices in coal mines, it cannot be applied to the general case of mine splitting and junctions involving change of direction with little or no area change. In dealing briefly with the subject of shock losses at splits and junctions, McElroy (1) suggests only that they be considered comparable to bends, with losses at junctions being increased 50 pct to allow for interference of merging streams. He recognizes the importance of quantity ratio but concludes that exact quantitative data are lacking to compute losses at splits and junctions. A very capable summary and analysis of the state of knowledge in industrial ventilation and fluid mechanics regarding losses due to divergence has recently been reported by Gilman (3). In considering all earlier work dealing with both air and water as fluids, he compares results on a common basis and obtains good empirical agreement. For divergent flow, the controlling variable in each branch is the quantity ratio, although the deflection angle is of secondary importance. Empirical equations are presented for straight and 90-deg branches with varying velocity ratios, assuming branches smaller than the main duct. These formulas are modifications of the Borda equation for abrupt contraction and expansion. The only information available on shock losses in convergent flow are approximate experimental data presented by Alden (4) and the Manual of Recommended Practice for Industrial Ventilation of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Alden considers the effects of both quantity ratio and deflection angle. The data indicate an effect opposite to that observed in divergence, the shock loss varying directly with quantity ratio. SHOCK LOSS THEORY Because pressure losses due to shock have been found to bear a constant relation to the mean velocity of flow in a given conduit, they are frequently expressed as a dimensionless function of the velocity head, termed the shock loss factor. Ninety wells were completed in Nebraska during 1941, of which 42 were producers. One of them was the discovery well of a new field. All of the production to date is in Richardson County. At the close of the year 14 wells were drilling and three more were shut down for orders, hoping for future development of production. Most of the drilling activity was in Richardson County, which had 68 operations; 10 wells were drilled in Nemaha County, 5 drilled or drilling in Gage County, 3 each in Otoe and Furnas Counties, 2 each in Cass, Harlan, Johnson and Sarpy Counties, and 10 wells were completed or drilling over the remainder of the state. The most important development of the year was the discovery in October of the Barada field, sec. 36, T. 3 N., R. 16 E.,

4.1-1. Introduction. Open pit mine planning must be correlated to all phases of a mining operation. The factors that must be considered in planning an open pit mine are numerous and must reflect the characteristics and surrounding conditions of a particular orebody. Therefore, only an outline of the subject can be presented here to aid the planning engineer in pointing out procedures that are generally applicable to pit design. The presentation is directed toward the planning of an open pit copper mine, but the procedures discussed should apply in most cases to any type of metallic or nonmetallic orebody. In planning an open pit mine the pertinent elements that must be included are: assays, geology, tonnage and areal extent of ore reserves, topography, mining equipment, economic factors of operating costs, capital expenditures, profit, types of ore, pit limits, cut-off grade, stripping ratio, rate of production, pit slopes, bench heights, road grades, ore metallurgical characteristics, hydrological conditions, property lines, and marketing considerations. 4.1-2. Sampling. Sampling must be adequate to classify the various materials to be removed from an open pit mine. Drillhole assays are plotted on sections and plan maps with ore and waste blocked out by selected bench intervals. These maps are prepared to depict the geological and other conditions existing on each mine level. The confidence factor to be applied to sampling and the resultant assays values must be given careful consideration. In uniformly disseminated de- posits, the confidence factor will approach unity. For widely fluctuating values, the average assay values should be discounted somewhat, the degree depending upon such factors as drillhole spacing. Such samples, at best, represent a very few pounds for hundreds to thousands of tons of ore

The State of Nevada, known par excellence as " the Silver State," occupies the major portion of the wide plateau, or so-called Great Basin, lying between the Sierra Nevada range on the west and the Wahsatch range of the Rocky Mountains on the east. It extends from the 114th degree to the 120th degree of longitude, west of Greenwich. It is limited, on the north, by the 42d degree of latitude, and on the extreme south by the 35th degree of latitude. Its general shape is that of an irregular parallelogram, from which the lower or southwestern portion has been cut off by a diagonal southeasterly line; the missing portion forms a part of the State of California on the west. The Great Basin is made up of a succession of low hills, or minor mountain ranges, running very nearly north and south, with long valleys between them. All of these mountains are more or less metalliferous. On the westcrn rim, marking the eastern flank or foothills of the Sierra, we find granites, porphyries, and propylites. Here we note the great Comstock lode, with its free-milling gold and silver ores, and still further south the once prominent and the now reviving gold and silver-bearing districts of Esmeralda County, Nevada, and of Morro County, California. Slip-line studies on deformed chromium single cvystals showed the usual bcc behavior. At room temperatuve, cross slip was prevalent—slip was not confined to a given plane, but the slip direction was (111). At -10O0K, slip occuvred on (110) planes, twins on(112) planes, and cleavage on (1001 planes. A single-crystal tensile specimen with an axis close to [011] showed a pronounced yield drop and high strain rate sensitivity which zclere used to derive relevant parame tevs in a dislocation dynamics treatment. Transmission electron microscope studies confirmed the existence of (110) slip planes and showed ecidence of loops punched out by precipitates and of grown-in dislocations promoting tangling. OF recent years experimental studies have been made of the deformation characteristics of single-crystal molybdenum and tungsten, but very little has been published on the behavior of single-crystal chromium. During a study of the mechanical properties of chromium, single-crystal studies were made which have already been partially described.&apos; However, additional information was generated which was not directly relevant to the main theme of Ref. 1, and, therefore, was not reported. In view of the need for complete documentation of deformation modes, the experimental observations made on the deformation of single-crystal chromium are summarized here, together with an electron-microscope study of the associated dislocation structures. It was found that, in terms of the deformation modes, chromium is a conventional bcc metal, showing a very pronounced yield-point phenomenon. Further, it was found that the flow strength of these crystals is very sensitive to the strain rate. Finally, the crystals were observed to contain many unidentified precipitates, which often were associated with prismatic dislocation loops. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Single crystals were grown from rods of wrought chromium by the method of zone annealing. Rods of "1/4in.-diam were supported vertically in an argon atmosphere while an induction coil was moved up the rod at 1 in. per hr. The power was adjusted to just below that required for melting, and the process produced single crystals in about 30 pct of the rods used. The orientations of the crystals, in general, lay near [011] and are summarized in Fig. 1. Before this treatment, the wrought material contained 35 pprn C, 68 ppm O, and 12 ppm N.* An analyzed single crystal *Usual metallic impurities found in iodide chromium are: Al, 5 ppm; Ca, A ppm; Cu, 2 ppm; Fe, 75 ppm; Yg, 0.5 ppm; Yn, < 3 ppm; Mo, < 3 ppm; Ni, 4 ppm; Si, < 20 ppm; Ti, < 1 ppm; V, 4 ppm; Zr, < 3 ppm. contained 10 pprn C, 79 ppm O, and 50 pprn N. Tension and compression specimens were shaped from the crystals by mechanical grinding, followed by the electrolytic removal of about 0.010 in. from the surface in a perchloric/acetic acid bath. All specimens had a gage length of 0.75 in., and tension specimens had a diameter of 0.100 in., while that of the compression samples was 0.200 in. Mechanical tests were carried out at a rate of 1.3 pct per min, and temperatures below 0°C were attained by means of a nitrogen cryostat similar to that of Wessel.2 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Modes of Deformation. In addition to the tensile properties of these crystals, which are described in Ref. 1, deformation markings on the surface were studied. Crystals A and F, Fig. 1, were deformed in tension at 300°K to 10 and 16 pct strain, respectively. The surfaces contained visible slip lines, about 1 C( apart, composed of both straight and wavy segments. They did not define a single plane, and so determination of the slip plane was not possible. However, the slip direction was deduced by comparing the axial orientations of the crystals before and after deformation. Fig. 2 is representative, and shows that the axis ro-

AS part of a long-range investigation of eutectoid decomposition, a study of the structure of austenite has been undertaken in order to characterize as best as possible the parent phase in the Fe-C system. Austenite is a solid solution of carbon atoms in fcc iron, the carbon atoms being located in interstitial positions. Of the two kinds of interstitial sites, octahedral (0, +, +) and tetrahedral (4, a, $), in this lattice, the larger octahedral sites are usually considered as the probable position of carbon. The strain energy involved in pytting a neutral carbon atom (covalent di; ameter 1.54)&apos; into a tetrahedral site (diameter 0.56A) is considerably greater than that associated with p2tting carbon into the octahedral site (diameter 1.08A). Dayal and arkeen&apos; observed the migration of carbon in iron under the influence of an electric field indicating tha tye carbon is ionized. pe ionic radius of C&apos;4 is 0.15A and that of C" is 0.29. Consequently, it is conceivable that carbon ions could occupy the tetrahedral sites if one considers only the strain energy. Size considerations alone do not provide a complete explanation for the formation of the interstitial solid solutions, however. because metals such as copper, zinc, and cadmium do not appear to form interstitial solid solutions in spite of their large interstitial sites. Evidence which suggests partial ioni-zation of the carbon in austenite has also been obtained by Speiser, Spretnak, and alor who derived formu- lae relating the observed change in lattice parameter to the effective diameter of the solute atom. Assuming the carbon occupies the octahedral site. they computed the effective diameter of carbon to be 1.33A whereas the covalent diameter is 1.54A. petch5 concluded from powder X-ray diffraction experiments that carbon atoms occupy the octahedral sites. His conclusion was based on the general trend observed in the intensity of the diffraction lines as the carbon content of the austenite was increased. However, the major difficulty associated with application of X-ray diffraction to this particular problem is the relatively poor scattering power of carbon. Williamson and smallman&apos; utilized X-ray diffraction to study the line broadening caused by the strain field about carbon atoms inferrite: these investigators concluded that at least 85 pct of the carbon in ferrite occupies the octahedral (0: 3, B) site rather than the larger

Investigation of the tensile properties of silver based aluminum alloy crystals was undertaken because it appeared attractive for studying strengthening effects due to Suzuki locking with minimum complication. Yield drops were observed in all alloy crystals (1, 2. 3. 4, and 6 at. pct Al) after strain aging at room temperature. No yield drops were found in similarly grown and tested silver crystals. The yield effects are attributed to Suzuki locking but the major portion of the solid solution strengthening to other mechanisms. INVESTIGATION of the tensile properties of single crystds of silver alloyed with aluminum was undertaken because it appeared to be a system in which segregation at stacking faults associated with partial dislocations1 would be the dominant factor in anchoring dislocations. First, silver and aluminum have closely similar atomic sizes and thus solute atom locking of a dislocation due to elastic interactions should be unimportant. Second, while both X-ray2 and thermodynamic3 investigations show short-range ordering in silver-based aluminum alloys, the degree of local order is quite small (X-ray measurements give v = EAB - 1/2(EAA + EBB) = - 0.025 ev and thermodynamic measurements give v r -0.007 ev) and should not be important in strengthening dilute alloys. Third, the stacking fault energy of silver is probably low (as indicated by the profusity of annealing twins) and is very likely diminished further and quite rapidly by aluminum additions since the A1-Ag phase diagram shows a stable hexagonal phase at only 25 at. pct Al. Also, a careful investigation in this laboratory4 has shown that the ratio of twin to normal grain boundaries in recrystallized alloys increases with aluminum content. Thus, with minimum complication from other factors, Ag-A1 alloys seem attractive for studying strengthening effects due to segregation at stacking faults of extended dislocations. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Single crystals measuring 250 by 5 by 1.5 mm of pure Ag (99.99 pct) and Ag-A1 alloys (A1 of 99.999 pct purity) of nominal compositions* 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 at. pct were grown in high-purity graphite molds from the melt under a dynamic vacuum (1 x l0-5 mm Hg). The technique consisted of moving a furnace having a hot zone (which melted about 0.5 cm of alloy) over a horizontal, evacuated quartz tube con- taining the mold and alloy at a rate of 3/8 in. per hr. Chemical analysis showed roughly the first inch of the crystal to be solute poor, the last inch solute rich; and the center section uniform in composition within the sensitivity of the analytical method (± 0.2 at. pct Al). The center section of the crystal was cut into five specimens. Gage lengths of reduced cross section, measuring from 1.5 to 2 cm in length, were mechanically introduced by means of jeweler&apos;s files and fine abrasive cloth with the crystal firmly held in polished steel guides. One-third of the cross section was then removed by etching and electro-polishing, the crystals were all subsequently annealed for several days at 850°C in a dynamic vacuum (<1 x 10-5 mm Hg) and furnace cooled to 200°C. The crystal orientations were determined using the usual back-reflection Laue technique. The Laue spots were sharp and of the same size as the incident beam. However, microscopic examination showed the crystals to contain substructures with subgrains of the order of a micron in diameter. The details of this substructure are presently under investigation. Tensile testing was done with a table model Instron using a cross-head speed of 0.002 in. per min. For testing at various temperatures the following media were used: 1) 415oK, hot ethylene glycol; 2) 296ºK, air, acetone, water; 3) 273ºK, ice water; 4) 258ºK, ethylene glycol "ice" in ethylene glycol; 5) 200°K, dry ice in acetone; 6) 77ºK, liquid nitrogen. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) Yield Behavior—A portion of an interrupted stress-strain curve for a 6 at. pct A1 crystal of the indicated orientation tested at room temperature is shown in Fig. 1. Initially, at (a), there is a small, gradual yield drop of about 10 mg per sq mm2. However, on stopping the test, and aging for a few minutes at (b), a sharp yield drop is found. Aging for longer times at (c) and (dl results in larger yield drops (and larger AT&apos;S). At, defined in Fig. 1, is usually larger than the yield drop by about 20 pct; however, this increase in the lower yield is transient since extrapolations of the flow stress curves join as may be seen from Fig. 1. (Both Laue and low-angle scattering photographs revealed no evidence of precipitation in a strain-aged 6 at. pct A1 crystal.)

IT has been shown1 that the resistance to corrosion of duralumin sheet is greatly influenced by the quenching medium used in heat treatment, or, more specifically, by the rate of cooling during quenching. The severity of corrosive attack after exposure to salt-water spray increases in the following order: DEGREE OF CORROSION, BY INSPECTION, QUENCHING MEDIUM AFTER 30 DAYS OF SALT-WATER SPRAY TEST; Water, cold (60° F.) Very slight. Water boiling Slight, but more than with cold water. Oil (70° F.) Slight, but more than with cold water. Air, fan blast, 65° F Severe, scaled. Air, still, 65° F Deeply scaled. The tensile strength, yield point and elongation are only slightly affected by the quenching medium, as shown in Table 1.

THE past year has witnessed no radical changes in methods for the reduction and refining of copper. The Carson litigation was finally brought to a close ant1 the copper smelter is again free to introduce charge into his reverberatory furnaces in whatever manner suits him best. This litigation naturally led to much experimentation with various methods of charging and with various types of bath. In some cases the charge was introduced more or less centrally on a relatively dry hearth and in other cases into a bath of greater or less depth. The results of these furnaces were meticulously compared with the results obtained in side-charger furnaces, and it was apparent that it made little, if any difference how a given furnace \\.as charged so long as care was taken that there was always something in the furnace for the flames to work on. So long as this requirement was complied with, consumption of fuel per ton of charge smelted and tonnage smelted per furnace day remained substantially the same regardless of the method of charging or the depth of bath employed. In some instances the center-charged deep-bath furnaces gave slightly better results than the side-charged particularly with respect to copper losses. The slags of the deep-bath furnaces are generally a little cleaner
