The variation of elastic modulus with terrzperature between -150° and 600°C has been investigated. Compounds close to equiatomic cornposition exhibit very low modulus values and very high damping near room temperature. The modulus rises steeply with both decreasing and increasing temperature. The modulus minimum and the high damping are believed to be connected with a martensitic transformation of TiNi. In bulk material this transition takes place slightly above room temperature quite rapidly and reversibly, with a hysteresis of some 30°C, depending on the Ti:Ni ratio. Oxygen impurity affects the reaction time. THE inter metallic compound TiNi has been reported to exist in an ordered CsCl (B2) structure,l-6 the homogeneity range varying rather markedly with temperature.7 Some investigators reported this compound to decompose peritectoidally to Ti2Ni and TiNi, between 650° and 800°C,3 or below,',g the latter workers also suggesting the decomposition to be strain-sensitive. Purdy and Parr were the first to report a structural transformation to a new, possibly hexagonal, structure at 36°C,7 a temperature indubitably too low to allow the significant amount of diffusion necessary for a peritectoid reaction. Mechanical-property investigations of compositions close to TiNi just above room temperature have qualitatively shown remarkable anomalies, particularly with respect to clamping,' and to a "memory" effect, that is, plastically deformed material returning to its original shape on being heated through the "decomposition" temperature.9 The original explanation of this effect—based on the apparent experimental observation of Ti2Ni or TiNi, formation in the material subjected to tensile or compressive stresses, respectivelp—does not appear plausible. It appeared more probable that the change involved may be a martensitic, diffusionless structural transformation, similar to those observed in other B2 structures such as 0 brass,'' AuCd,ll and AuZn.12 The existence of such transformation has been established recently,', although the symmetry of the low-temperature structure is not yet known. The present paper describes the elastic modulus and damping behavior of polycrystalline TiNi in both structures. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD 1) Specimens. All the specimens to be investigated were prepared from premelted electrolytic nickel and iodide titanium by nonconsumable arc melting and casting in a water-cooled copper mold. The cast billets were canned in mild steel, extruded, and swaged to approximately 0.375 in. diam. The cans were then removed by pickling or machining. Preliminary material balance checks indicated no significant weight losses on melting (less than 5 mg on a 50-g button); hence nominal compositions have been used throughout. In agreement with previously reported observations7 no single-phase material was obtained at—or close to—Ti 1.00 Ni1.00 a small amount of finely divided second phase always being present. It was found that most of the oxygen impurity was associated with this minor phase, which was identified as oxygen-bearing Ti2Ni—possibly Ti,Ni,O. Many important contributions to the more fundamental aspects of mineral processing have been made this past year. Mular1 researched the flotation characteristics of pure zinc oxide and also samples that had been doped with Al+++ and Cu++. Correlation of the response of pure zinc oxide to oleate flotation with a calculated zpc (from solution equilibrium) suggests that adsorption of oleate ion is coulombic in nature. Doping the sample with Al+++ (which will make the ZnO more n-type) had a marked effect on the maximum value of pH at which 50% recovery was obtained at constant collector addition. That is, when 0.5 mole percent Al+++ was added, the pH for 50% recovery was reduced by about four units. Treatment with Cu++ was found to have little effect on the flotation response of zinc oxide, even for additions of one mole percent. Since the zero points of charge of the Al+++ doped powders were not measured, it was not possible to correlate flotation data of these samples directly with charge phenomena.

The application of evolutionary operation is proposed for the cleaning of coal by the heavy media process. Analysis of the data given suggests some benefits that may not be immediately appreciated unless evolutionary operation is applied. For example, while it may seem obvious to increase specific gravity when the ash and sulfur content of the clean coal is lower than that allowed, evolutionary operation may show that an increase in feed rate or an increase in both feed rate and specific gravity would be a more profitable alternative. In addition, by using evolutionary operation, up-to-date knowledge of the effect of change of feed rate or specific gravity on yield and product quality is available. This information facilitates confidence about decisions made in regard to the day-to-day operation of these units. A number of other applications in the minerals industry are proposed. An application of evolutionary operation in a related field is also given where a large number of variables were required to be optimized.

Drilling and blasting 12-in. blastholes started about the middle of 1946 and has worked out so well that about one half of the blasting, formerly done with 9-in. holes, is now done with 12-in. holes. In most of this work the harder benches were chosen for the 12-in. size because these were the areas where the greatest difficulty was encountered in thorough fragmentation. At the start of this experimental work a 42-T Bucyrus- Erie churn drill was available whereas all other blasthole drilling was being done with 29-T rigs. The large drill was first equipped with a standard 9-in. string of tools but it could not drill quite as fast as the 29-T drills. How- ever, when the weight of the string was increased about 700 lb, or to a total weight of about 3500 lb, it was found that the 42-T exceeded the drilling speed of the 29-T by about 25 per cent. When a 12-in. bit was substituted for the 9-in. bit the 42-T rig again dropped behind the drill- ing rate of the 29-T rigs. At this stage of the experiment the 42-T was using a 12-in. bit with detachable points and the total weight of the string of tools was about 3800 lb. It took longer to change the drill points than it did the regulation bit and this accounted for some of the slower drilling rate. When a heavier stem and standard construction 12-in. bits were used it was found that the 42-T could drill a 12-in. hole slightly faster than a 29-T could drill a 9-in. hole even in the hardest rock in the pit.

A new tankhouse was started in January 1959 at the Copper Refinery of the Boliden Co., Skelleftehamn, Sweden. In early 1961 a semiautomatic machine for looping and straightening of starting sheets was introduced to substitute previous manual operations. The machine as well as consequent, racking and handling is described. Finally, economic benefits achieved and new constructions for the future are discussed. HISTORY Tankhouse operations at the Boliden Co. 's Smelter in Skelleftehamn started in 1932 on a scale that since then has been gradually increasing. In order to rationalize the operations, a new tankhouse was erected. It went into production in January 1959 and was designed for a yearly production of 35,000 metric tons at a current density of 16 amps per sq ft. Already from the beginning, however, the tankhouse has been run with a current density of 21.5 amps per sq ft, corresponding to a maximum capacity of 50,000 tons a year. During the time of planning of the new tankhouse, due consideration was given to the possibilities of mechanizing the operations. New ideas could be and were actually tested on full or pilot plant scale in the old tankhouse. In that way we developed a system for the cathode handling including washing, weighing, and transportation. A system using forklift trucks in combination with trailers and overhead cranes has been developed for transportation and racking of anodes and also for handling of anode scrap. With respect to the electrolyte, circulation and temperature control are partly automatic. Special attention was paid to the production of starting sheets, which operation normally requires a great number of man hours, and it was made the object of a particular survey as to the best ways of straightening starting sheets, attaching loops to the sheets, and so forth. As a result, a machine was designed during 1957-58 and built in our own shops. After a period of tests, the new equipment was put in operation commercially on the 10th of April, 1961. Since this date the machine has produced about 2 million starting sheets without interruption and has been the only source of looped starting sheets for the tankhouse. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Fig. 1 shows all the major parts of the system. These parts are: slitting machine with feeding table (I), standard roller leveler, type Ungerer (2), tilting roller table (3), conveyors for sheets and suspension bars (4, 7), storage of suspension bars (51, punching and stitching machine (6), two lift-turn-tilt tables (8) for discharging the starting sheets, two rack conveyors (9) for sheet assemblies. Included are a hy-daulic pump station and panels for pneumatic and electric controls. SLITTING AND STRAIGHTENING The machine is fed by hand by a man sitting in front of the slitting-machine table, Fig. 2. This operator inserts one sheet at a time into the slitter. After being trimmed, the sheet is automatically conveyed to the following step of handling, straightening. The slitting machine cuts away about 8 mm of the upper and lower parts of the sheet (in relation to its original position in the stripper section) for two reasons. The first one is to give the machine sheets of uniform dimensions; the second one is a matter of quality. Normally the starting sheets as stripped have a thick edge at the bottom end. This part would collect anode slimes and might also cause short circuits when inserted in the cells without trimming. The straightener used is of German construction

In connection with certain cooperative work carried on between the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the U. S. Geological Survey during the year 1918, it was the writers' privilege to make metallographic examinations of a great many test bars and other pieces of nickel-steel gun forgings. The material studied came from many different steel plants throughout the country and consisted both of forgings that had been accepted by the Ordnance Department and those that had failed to pass the specified physical tests. In general, these tests require a minimum tensile strength of 95,000 lb. (42,091 kg.)! an elastic limit of 65,000 lb. (29,483 kg.), an 18 per cent, elongation, and a 30 per cent. reduction in area. An average chemical composition of the steel studied is 0.38 per cent. carbon and 2.9 per cent. nickel. The steel was of both basic electric and basic open-hearth manufacture. The object of the metallographic work was twofold: to assist in detecting defects in the steel and, if possible, to suggest remedies for the same; and to obtain as much information as possible in regard to the relation of the microstructure of the metal to its physical properties. The grcatcr part of the investigation was devoted to defective metal that failed to pass the ordnance specifications. Many types and kinds of more or less serious defects thus came under observation, but most of these were due to the attempts by the manufacturer to meet the enormous demand for ordnance steel with more or less inadequate equipment, and were soon remedied. Two defects, the so-called "flakes" or "snowflakes" and a certain "fibrous" or "woody" fracture, were encountered so frequently and were so disastrous to the steel that the greater part of the study was devoted to them. As a result much information as to their nature and their effects upon the steel and something in regard to some of the conditions that favor their development has been obtained. (Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912) THE following notes are submitted in the belief that they may interest some of the many owners of small water-power plants, so generally used in mining-work throughout the West. A small and somewhat primitive quartz-mill was taken over by a leasing company, and a 10-stamp battery was installed. Originally, power had been furnished by a Pelton wheel ; but, since the supply of water depended on the rate at which snow was melting on the mountains, a steam-plant had been added to help out during cold spells. This auxiliary plant was antiquated and expensive to operate, and, soon after starting up the remodeled mill, it broke down completely; so that it became necessary to get all the power possible out of the Pelton wheel,. with its ever-varying water-supply. The pipe-line, about a quarter of a mile long, was made up. of assorted sizes, from 7 to 11 in. in diameter; and, since it was buried deep under snow, there were no data from which to calculate the theoretical size of the nozzle. The stream being at this time at a low stage, it was important to make the most efficient use of the available water. This was done by using a nozzle large enough to pass the whole supply-taking care, however, to limit the size so as not to lower the water-level in the tank at the head of the pipe-line. As the weather became warmer, the nozzles were gradually enlarged to meet the increasing volume of water; but a point was finally reached where further enlargement only gave decreased power. Evidently the loss from friction had more than balanced the gain from the increased flow through the pipe. However, the area of nozzle that developed the, maximum power from the pipe-line had been found. This was used; and the surplus water was allowed to run to waste at the head of the line.

After an interval of fourteen years, saddened for all of us by the death of David Thomas, the father of the anthracite iron-trade, first president of the Institute, and by the untimely loss of his successor, Alexander L. Holley, whose memory we are about to honor by loving services, the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers have conferred upon me for the second time the office of president, under circumstances similar to those which led to the choice in 1876. Then the whole world was represented at the great exposition of industry which was held in Philadelphia to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of our declaration of political independence. In 1890 it is our privilege to receive as guests the members of the British Iron and Steel Institute, who, with singular and graceful felicity, have appointed a meeting in the United States in the year when we pass from the second to the first place in the international column of the production of iron, and thus celebrate our industrial independence. For the honor of being chosen to extend to our distinguished guests the right hand of fellowship and a hearty welcome I return to my associates the grateful acknowledgment of one whose chief claim to your favor is to be found in his love for the professional occupation in which we are all engaged, and in his efforts, public and private, to promote its advancement into new fields of usefulness. In order to indicate the full significance of the visit of our foreign guests at this time, it will be proper to explain briefly the origin, aims and work of the Iron and Steel Institute. It unquestionably owes its birth to the International Expositions held in London in 1851 and 1862, and in Paris in 1867. These expositions served to break down the jealousies of nationality and to diffuse a better knowledge of industrial processes. Trade-secrets, which had been carefully guarded, became common property; manufacturers who had previously regarded themselves as rivals formed bonds of union and ties of friendship, as the results of an intercourse which

The micrography and macrography of aluminum and its alloys present certain difficulties. Many of the difficulties attendant on the micrography have been removed by methods developed during the past few years, notably those of E. H. Dix, Jr.1 The development of grain size in aluminum and its alloys may be equally troublesome, yet comparatively little detailed attention appears to have been given to it. Satisfactory reagents are available for the development of such structurcs in ferrous and most non-ferrous metals, but those applied to aluminum and its alloys, i. e., alcoholic or aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide or hydrofluoric acid are not entirely satisfactory. Hanson and Arch-butt,2 in speaking of these two reagents, state that "These two reagents give fairly satisfactory results, but they sometimes produce badly tarnished surfaces from which the surface deposit is difficult to remove." It has been our experience that neither of these reagents is to be entirely relied on for developing structures suitable for study or photography. This means that when the etch fails to produce satisfactory results the specimen must be repolished, through the 000-paper at least, and then etched with another reagent. This procedure entails a considerable loss of time, and the final results may not be all that might be desired. However, the reagent to be described, although not a panacea for all etching troubles, has improved results so markedly that it is felt that it & worth offering as a grain-size etch generally applicable to aluminum and aluminum alloys. Czochralski3 in 1915 mentioned the application of a solution of 10 to 20 c. c. concentrated hydrofluoric acid in 100 c. c. absolute alcohol, etching in this reagent being followed by dipping in concentrated hydrochloric acid soliltion.

THE 140th meeting of the Institute will be held in the Engineering societies Building, 'New York, Feb.: 16-19, and one of the most important features, one which cannot be reduced to text in the TRANSACTIONS, will be the opportunity to renew old friendships and make new friends, to talk things over -to orient one's self in these troublous .times. There will be daily get-together luncheons for all, luncheons and dinners for specialized groups, an informal dance, the annual reception and banquet, and a smoker. And such a smoker! It starts with dinner at .dinnertime, shows signs of cabaret, turns smoker, and then goes entertainment-all for the price of one. This year one can stay long after 11 o'clock-there will be time and opportunity to amble around and meet everyone present. The formal program is rapidly rounding into shape. The annual business meeting will -be held on Tuesday morning and the banquet will be at the Commodore. The four Divisions and the various, Technical Committees are arranging their sessions. and scheduling for these a long list of significant papers. A .feature of the meeting will be a number of round tables on timely subjects.

THE importance of semikilled steel as a high tonnage grade has long been recognized. The increasing severity of the applications for which semikilled steel is used makes it desirable to obtain further information regarding the features of open hearth practice and ingot structure that can affect steel performance in subsequent rolling and fabricating operations. Accordingly, an investigation is being carried out studying the structure of various types of semikilled steel ingots. This paper reviews some of the observations made and information gathered in this investigation. By definition, semikilled steel may be considered to include all nonrimming steels in which the natural shrinkage occurring during ingot solidification is offset to an appreciable degree by gas formation. Accordingly, this type of steel includes the entire range intermediate between rimmed and fully killed steel. The resultant ingot structures range from those of steels that have been capped to suppress a weak rimming action to those steels that have been killed in the furnace or ladle to the extent that no mold deoxidizer is required. A survey reported to the 1946 AIME Open Hearth Conference' reviewed the practices being used at 28 major plants for the deoxidation of semikilled steel. It was found that most plants divide the deoxidizing additions between the ladle and the mold many of the plants adding only minor amounts of deoxidizer to the bath or none at all. Silicon, aluminum and titanium were the only elements used for ladle and mold deoxidation. Mold deoxidizers were added as capping additions or as uniformly fed additions. Several practices were reported in which the steel was deoxidized in the ladle to the extent that little or no mold deoxidation was needed. No reference was made to grades capped by using special mold designs or special closures over the top of molds. Accordingly, specific examples of this type of practice will not be considered in this paper. It appeared from this survey of deoxidation practice that semikilled steel can be divided into three types, namely, capped semikilled, in which aluminum is added near the end of pour or after shut-off, intermediate semikilled steels, in which aluminum is fed uniformly throughout the pour, and semikilled steels requiring no mold deoxidation. In an attempt to cover the ingot structures obtained by the range of practices reported in the preceding survey, three series of experimental heats were made using increasing amounts of aluminum, silicon and titanium for ladle deoxidizers. The ladle deoxidizers were added as stick aluminum, 50 pct ferrosilicon and 20 pct ferrotitanium (4 pct carbon), respectively. Two methods of studying ingot structures were used. Ingots were removed from production, burned longitudinally and machined to allow observation of the central pipe and coarse blowholes. The market for thermal coal has recently been growing rapidly and it is projected to continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Both the national and international markets often demand high-Btu low-sulfur thermal coal in order to minimize the cost of utilization and meet the environmental restrictions. High quality thermal coal can be prepared to compete in the utility market by desulfurizing the high-Btu midwestern coal and blending it with low-sulfur western coal which is usually low in Btu content. The methods that can be used for optimizing the coal preparation plant operating parameters for physically desulfurizing coal are presented.

In 1972 Kennecott Explorations, Inc. conducted a three month cruise to the central Pacific as part of a study of deep-ocean manganese nodules. One of the objectives of the voyage was to collect at least 200 tons of nodules for use in extractive metallurgy research and various engineering tests. It was determined to cut off production at a maximum of 200 tons, should we reach that amount before the end of the 38 on-station days. We were able to reach that goal; 200 tons of nodules were collected, representing an average return of 2340 lb from 171 dredge runs. Once equipment and techniques were refined, normal returns consistently exceeded 2 tons per haul. Up to this time, Kennecott had sampled extensively with the use of small free-fall devices using wire rope and winch equipment. These devices have never offered a viable method for collecting nodules in bulk, and we sought to develop a dredging capability which would give some assurance of meeting future requirements with efficiency and economy. After testing a series of increasingly complex dredge designs at sea, it was decided to utilize two of the simpler configurations, which after modification provided the basic design for the dredge used.

The hardening of annealed copper during fatigue testing appears to be independent of the applied stress and to occur largely within the first 4000 cycles. Copper hardened by fatigue is more resistant to annealing than copper hardened by static means, and softens by a multistage process. Creep studies at 300°C show that copper hardened by fatigue also has greater resistance to creep than statically hardened copper. Some theoretical explanations are discussed. RECENT interest in the behavior of metals subjected to fatigue stems from observations of phenomena which could not be explained by current theories of the structure of metals. In 1953 Bullen et al.l showed that the hardening caused by fatigue at low stresses did not cause severe bending of the lattice as did hardening by static methods. This was later confirmed by Wood, 'and Broom and Ham.3 Clarebrough et al4 showed that as the stress level used in fatigue hardening was increased, bending of the lattice was introduced, eventually approaching that of metals deformed by conventional cold-working methods. The type of hardening introduced by fatigue has other interesting characteristics. Kemsley5 showed that copper fractured by fatigue at low stresses resisted annealing as compared to copper hardened an equal amount by static means. The work of Clarebrough etal, shows that the manner of energy release during annealing differs for fatigue-hardened and statically hardened metal in both magnitude and temperature range of release. In addition to hardening of the lattice, fatigue has been shown to cause softening in materials previously hardened by static methods,5 and also in age-hardened alloys.7 The superposition of a small fatigue stress on the static loading of high-temperature alloys has been shown to increase their resistance to creep.' The present work was an attempt to determine the relationship between fatigue hardening, resistance to annealing, and the creep properties of pure copper. EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM The program described here was designed to answer three questions: 1) Can stress-cycle combinations well below the failure values give significant increases in hardness? 2) Does hardening, under different stress-cycle combinations, give increase resistance to annealing? And if so— 3) Does superior resistance to annealing confer superior creep properties over statically hardened material? Three-quarter hard OFHC copper was annealed in vacuo at 550°C for 1 hr to produce a strain-free material having a fine grain size and uniform hardness. (The standard deviation of the mean hardness of the annealed samples was less than + 1.9 Dpn). Annealing was performed after machining the fatigue specimens so as to avoid work-hardened surfaces. Jigs were used to avoid distortion. The fatigue properties of the annealed copper were determined using an accurately aligned Baldwin-Sonntag SF1-U machine operating at 1800 cycles per min. This limited the minimum number of cycles which could be examined to about 4000 stress reversals. Since failure resulted in specimen damage, hardness increase with number of cycles was measured by testing specimens fatigued to different fractions of the failure values. The results are shown in Fig. 1, and are superimposed on the S-N curve of the copper in Fig. 2. The resistance to annealing of fatigue-hardened material was compared to that of material hardened by uniaxial tensile straining. Specimens hardened to equal values by both methods were progressively annealed for 1 hr at temperature in vacuo. After each annealing treatment the hardness was measured using a Leitz Durimet hardness tester with a 500-g load. At least five tests were made for each hardness determination. The standard deviation for individual specimens varied from 0.26 to 1.48 hardness points. The results are shown in Figs. 3 to 5. The discontinuous nature of the annealing process has been brought out by drawing idealized curves through the data points. This can be justified by the consistency of the results as well as by general agreement with results of Kemsley.5 The creep resistance of fatigue-hardened and

Becket, at whose suggestion and under whose general direction this investigation was made, a statement of the outstanding features of the work and a brief explanation of the factors that led to its inception. It is not possible, in a paper of this character, to record all of the operating and test data collected, which includes the production of more than 350 heats of steel. The difficulty of a complete presentation is increased by the fact that several lines of experimentation are too incomplete to warrant publication of the results at the present time. In addition to the methods of manufacture and test employed in the work, there is described experimental evidence on which are based certain definite conclusions regarding the remarkable effects brought about by the presence in steel of relatively small percentages of zirconium. When added to a molten steel bath, zirconium combines chemically with dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur, in the order named, and is capable of neutralizing the embrittling effect of phosphorus in whole or in part; although in the case of phosphorus there is no evidence so far of actual chemical combination. These effects arc not in the nature of suppositions supported by theory, nor is their existence deduced merely on the basis of analytical evidence. In each phase of its relation to or reaction with the four impurities mentioned, zirconium affects beneficiauy the mechanical properties of the steel to which it is added, in a manner which it is one of the purposes of this paper to explain in terms of a tentative working theory.

These effects arc not in the nature of suppositions supported by theory, nor is their existence deduced merely on the basis of analytical evidence. In each phase of its relation to or reaction with the four impurities mentioned, zirconium affects beneficiauy the mechanical properties of the steel to which it is added, in a manner which it is one of the purposes of this paper to explain in terms of a tentative working theory.

STRESS-induced twin boundary motion in the AuCd ß'phase (52.5 at. pct Au 47.5 at. pct Cd having an orthorhombic structure (space group D h)' was discussed for the case of transformation twins.' Mechanical twinning, i.e., introduction of new twin orientations by the applied stress was sometimes observed in the ß' phase which contained two transformation twin orientations. (See Ref. 2 for experimental details.) The transformation twins terminated at the mechanical twin boundary; the two initial orientations having been twinned to the new orientation as shown in Fig. l. In a "hard" tensile instrument, formation of each mechanical twin was accompanied by a sharp drop in load (and an audible click) resulting in a typical serrated load-extension curve. The mechanical twins increased in width and additional twins were nucleated as the load increased until the entire specimen was occupied by the mechanical twin orientation. A restoring force2 caused the mechanical twin and transformation twin boundaries to return towards their initial configuration on releasing the load. In a stabilized specimen* the total strain introduced by mechanical twinning was recovered on releasing the applied stress. Initial and final microstructures were identical. After decreasing gradually to a critical width, mechanical twins suddenly disappeared accompanied by audible clicks and sharp increases in load (measured at a constant rate of crosshead motion in a "hard" machine). Mechanical twins could be stabilized in any position by maintaining the applied load for a sufficient time, indicating a decrease in restoring force with time similar to that observed for transformation twins.' Orientation relationships for mechanical and transformation twins were determined and are shown in Fig. 2. The mechanical twin, T3, was twin related to transformation twin, T,, by reflection in (1ll), and twin related to transformation twin, T2, by reflection in (111)T, . T, was related to T, by reflection in(ll1)T1 . The "average" mechanical twin composition plane lay several degrees from (1ll), . In every specimen which mechanically twinned, orientation T3 was most highly favored by the applied stress, i.e., it was the twin orientation which provided the greatest change in length compatible with the direction of applied stress

A simple correlation is presented for the prediction of saturation pressures in condensate-gas and volatile-oil mixtures. Saturation pressure is related directly to the composition of the mixture with the aid of two generalized composition characteristics, B, the molal average boiling point, and W, the modified weight average equivalent molecular weight. The need for hydrocarbon equilibrium constants is entirely eliminated. Only the values of the two conlposition parameters need be obtained, and these are calculated in a simple and reproducible manner from the stream analysis of the mixture and the ASTM distillation for the heavy ends. The correlation is given .in the form of a set of 14 working charts in which saturation pressures, either retrograde dew points or bubble points, are plotted cs temperature, forming partial phase envelopes for mixtures having discrete values of the composition parameters, B and Wul. A locus of critical states on each chart intersects the partial phase envelopes, distinguishing retrograde dew point pressures from bubble pressures. A comparison Between experimental and predicted saturation pressures reveals that: the probable error of the predicted values, when considering the data as a whole (214 experimental points), is five per cent; for high gasjoil ratio condensate fluids (approximately 40.000 or more cu ft/bbl) the probable error is about 8 per cent. In either case, however, the probable error is comparable with the overall uncertainty of the data from which the correlation is derived. INTRODUCTION There is a present need for a simplified, yet reasonably accurate method for predicting upper phase boundaries of reservoir fluids. In the case of high gas/oil ratio fluids, namely the so-called highly volatile oils and the condensate gases, no simple method, accurate within 5 to 10 per cent, is now available by which bubble point and retrograde dew point pressures may be predicted. In order to calculate the upper phase boundary of a volatile reservoir fluid, using correlations now available, it is necessary to find and employ the proper K-values (equilibrium volatility ratios of the hydrocarbons in that fluid). This process of finding the Proper K-values usually involves a double trial and error computation. Since the K-values are in themselves dependent upon the composition of the fluid, their use in the calculation of a saturation pressure actually represents an unnecessary complication. The correlation described in this paper relates saturation pressure directly to the stream composition, entirely eliminating the need for K-values. The only data required to calculate the Stream composition are obtained from the customary low temperature fractional analyses of separator gas and liquidt and from the ASTM distillation of the c,+ fraction of the separator liquid. A considerable simplification in the procedure for predicting saturation pressures is thereby effected without significant loss in accuracy. BASIS FOR A CORRELATION Empirical relationships between the saturation pressure and the composition of the fluid in question have already been partially explored by one of the authors.V n particular, a relationship between the critical pressure for a hydrocarbon mixture and its composition was developed. The critical pressure is in reality a saturation pressure, as it repregents a limiting case either of a dew point or of a buhhle point pressure for any given mixture. It was found that the critical pressure may be correlated as a function of two generalized composition characteristics or variables. ONE of the primary purposes of this investigation was to determine how far blast-furnace metal and slag depart from equilibrium, particularly with respect to sulphur distribution. In studying the equilibrium between blast-furnace metal and slag, there are two approaches that can be used. One method is to use synthetic slags, as was done by Hatch and Chipman;' the other is to equilibrate the metal and slag from the blast furnace by remelting in the laboratory. In the set of experiments here reported, metal and slag tapped simultaneously from the same blast furnace were used for all the runs. The experiments were divided into two groups: 1—a time series at each of three different temperatures to determine the t.ime required for metal and slag to equilibrate in various respects under the experimental conditions of remelting, and 2—an addition series to determine the effect of additions to the slag on the equilibrium between the metal and slag. An atmosphere of carbon monoxide was used to simulate blastfurnace conditions. The furnace used for this investigation was a vertically mounted tubular Globar type with two concentric porcelain tubes inside the heating element. The control couple was located between the two porcelain tubes. The carbon monoxide atmosphere was introduced through a mercury seal at the bottom of the inner tube. On top, a glass head (with ground joint) provided access for samples and a long outlet tube prevented air from sucking back into the furnace. The charge used was iron 6 g, slag 5 g for the time series, or iron 9 g, slag 7 % g for the addition series. This slag-to-metal ratio of 0.83 approximates the average for blast-furnace practice, which commonly ranges from about 0.6 to 1.1. A crucible of AUC graphite containing the above charge was suspended by a molybdenum wire in the head and, after flush, was lowered to the center of the furnace as shown in Fig. 1. The cylindrical crucible was 2 in. long x % in. OD. The furnace was held within &3"C of the desired temperature for all the runs. The temperature was checked after the end of each run by flushing the inner tube with air and placing a platinum-platinum-10 pct rhodium thermocouple in the position previously occupied by the crucible; the temperature of the majority of the runs was much closer than the deviation specified above. The couple was checked against a standard couple which had been calibrated at the gold and palladium points, and against a Bureau of Standards couple. The carbon monoxide atmosphere was prepared by passing COz over granular graphite at about 1200°C. It was purified by bubbling through a 30 pct aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide and passing through ascarite and phosphorus pentoxide. The train and connections were all glass except for a few butt joints where rubber tubing was used for flexibility. The rate of gas flow was 25 to 40 cc per min. As atmospheric pressure prevailed in the furnace, the pressure of carbon monoxide was only slightly higher than the partial pressure thereof in the bosh and hearth zones of a blast furnace—by virtue of the elevated total pressure therein. Simultaneous samples of blast-furnace metal and slag were taken for these remelting experiments. The composition of each is given in the first line of Table I. There is considerable uncertainty as to the significant temperature in a blast furnace at which to compare experimental results. This uncertainty arises not only from lack of temperature measurements in the furnace, but also from lack of knowledge of the zone where the slag-metal reactions occur. (Do they occur principally at the slag-metal interface in the crucible, or as the metal is descending through the slag, or even higher as slag and metal are splashing over the coke?) The known temperatures are those of the metal at cast, which averages about 2600°F, and of the cast or flush slag, which is usually about 100°F hotter. To bridge this uncertainty, remelting temperatures were chosen as 1400°, 1500" (2732°F), and 1600°C. For the time series the duration of remelt was 1, 2, 4, 8, 17, or 66 hr; crucible and contents were quenched in brine. The addition series were quenched by rapidly transferring the crucible and contents from the furnace to a close-fitting copper "mold." THE handling of native labor is offering an interesting problem that requires diplomacy. It is difficult to induce many of the men to leave their villages and enter into regular work. They do not feel the necessity of manual labor other than to obtain sufficient money to pay the annual hut tax and to buy a little clothing. The ground provides mealies (corn) which means food and beer, he hunts and catches fish, so why work? But gradually, as the native becomes more civilized, his wants increase and his ideas change; he now needs money to supply his desires and eventually he must work more. So in time it is hoped that the labor market will be better supplied.
