There is evidence that a concentration of more than five million particles per cubic foot of a highly siliceous dust is dangerous. Therefore, it may be stated that it is desirable to avoid counts of more than five million particles of dust containing free silica to a high percent in working places. The A. I. M. E. Subcommittee on Bituminous Mining has been trying for several years to secure the information that was collected by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing &. on the subsidence of its property caused by mining coal beneath it. The Marquette company was willing to have these data used, but it was impossible to obtain them because the records had been filed away. About two years ago these records became available and the engineering data presented herewith were compiled from them by R. L. Auchmuty, assisted by L. E. Young, who was connected with the collection of the information. On account of the cost, it is impossible to reproduce all of the data here, although the original information is on file with the records of the Committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence. The accompanying charts show representative and average data and give only the engineering information with enough description to tell how it was obtained. It is hoped that all of those connected with the original case will participate in the discussion that this will bring forth. Howard N. Eavenson, Chairman, Subcommittee on Bituminous Coal Mining. PRobably the most complete records of subsidence due to coal mining in the United States are those compiled by the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. at LaSalle, 111. These records, covering a period of more than three years, were compiled and used as evidence during the suit of the Marquette Cement Manufacturing Co. vs. the Oglesby Coal Co. at Oglesby, LaSalle County, Ill., in which the cement company successfully endeavored to stop the coal company from mining under its property. Fig. 1 shows a typical section of the geological formation. The cement company was mining the LaSalle limestone which lies about 125 ft. under the surface. The limestone is 30 to 35 ft. thick and underlain by about 15 ft. of shale. The cement company was mining about 20 ft. of the limestone, and in some places 10 to 12 ft. of the underlying shale, by the room and pillar method. The mining of the limestone always preceded the mining of the shale. The coal company was mining by longwall advance methods the NO. 2 seam of coal 42 in. thick underlying the limestone bed by 435 to 470 ft. Phase relationships in the system Cr-Si have been established based on the melting point, X-ray, metallo-graphic, and DTA studies. The three intermediate phases, Cr3Si, Cr5Si,, and CrSi,, melt congruently at 177V ± I@,Cr3Si, 1680"i 20°, and 1490" *20°C, respectively, while the fourth intermediate phase CrSi, melts peritectically at 1413" i 5°C to Cr5Si3 and a melt containing 51 at. pct Si. The temperatures and compositions of the four eutectic isotherms occurring in this system are given below: DTA and metallographic evidences indicate that Cr5Si, undergoes a phase transformation at 1505" i20°C. The high-temperature form of this phase could not be retained by the quenching techniques used in this study. TECHNOLOGICAL interest in the developing of composite systems, consisting of Sic on the one hand as a fiber-reinforced material and metallic substances such as chromium, nickel, or Cr-Ni alloys as a binding agent on the other hand, stimulated the present investigation of phase relationships in the binary system Cr-Si. Earlier works concerning this system have been evaluated and summarized by ansen and Anderko.' Their phase diagram was based mainly on the works of Kieffer, Benesovsky, and schroth2 and Kurnakov.~ According to these authors, the three intermediate phases Cr3Si, CrSi, and CrSi, all melt congruently at approximately 1730°, 1600°, and 1550°C. However, they did not agree on the compositional stability of the fourth intermediate phase between Cr3Si and CrSi. Later Parthe, Nowotny, and schmid4 determined the structure of this phase to be tetragonal T-1 type using the single-crystal method, and concluded that this phase had a formula of Cr5Si3. Since the compilation of Hansen and Anderko,' a new phase diagram for the system Cr-Si has been proposed by Elliott5 based on the works of Goldschmidt and rand,' Guseva and ~vechkin,~ and Trusova, Kuzev, and Ormont8 and the earlier works quoted by Hansen and Anderko.' According to this proposed phase diagram, all four intermediate phases have large ranges of homogeneity and all melt congruently. More recently, Svechnikov, Kocherzhinskii, and yupkog studied the system Cr-Si by the DTA-method. According to their findings, the three intermediate phases, Cr3Si, Cr5Si3, and CrSi,, melt congruently at 1700°, 1720°, and 1475"C, respectively, while the fourth intermediate phase, CrSi, melts peritectically at 1475°C to Cr5Si3 and a melt containing 50 at. pct Si. The temperatures and compositions of the four eutectic isotherms were found to be: In view of the discrepancies existing in the literature concerning the system Cr-Si, it was decided to rein-vestigate the phase relationships in this system. EXPERIMENTAL a) Starting Materials. Chromium disilicide and chromium or silicon powders were used in the present study to prepare the melting point and DTA samples. CrSi, was obtained by directly reacting cold-pressed elemental powders in an atmosphere of Hz at a temperature of about 1250°C. Chromium powder, purchased from Stark Chemical Co., had the following impurities in ppm: Fe, 200; Mg, 1000; and 0, 250; while silicon powder, purchased from the Welded Carbide Co., had the following impurities in ppm: Ca, 700; and Fe, 3500. b) Melting-Point Determination and Differential Thermal Analysis. Cylindrical melting-point samples of approximately 13 mm in diam and 30 mm in length with a rectangular groove in the center were prepared by hot-pressing of well-mixed powder mixtures in graphite dies. Before the melting-point determination, the hot-pressed samples were ground on a sand paper to remove any minute surface contamination of graphite. A small hole of 1 mm in diam, drilled on the center portion of the samples, served as a blackbody cavity for the temperature measurements. DTA samples approximately 13 mm in diam and 15 mm in length were prepared in a manner similar to the melting-point samples. Melting points were determined using the Pirani technique under a helium atmosphere of 40 psi. The design, performance, and operation of this apparatus have been described in detail by Rudy and ~ro~ulski.'~ The temperature measurements were carried out with a calibrated disappearing-filament-type micro-pyrometer. The measured temperature was corrected for losses from the quartz window of the melting-point furnace and for deviations from blackbody conditions of the observation hole. The procedure for temperature correction has also been previously described." The DTA method of Heetderks, Rudy and Eckertl' was also used to check any phase transformations of selected alloys in the system Cr-Si. A detail of the guide rollers is shown on Fig. I; and Fig. 2 shows a photograph of a guide roller that has been in service for several months on the haul-back cable. The former practice of supporting and guiding the haul-back cable on slusher hoists at Kimberly was accomplished by using the conventional type of snatch-block pulley, but it was found that an excessive amount of cable whipping and unreasonable wear on both rope and pulley resulted from this type of cable support. The guide, which is wholly made in the Corporation's shops, consists of two vertical and one horizontal roll assembled in a frame that is lagged to the cap timber in a slusher drift. In some slusher drifts more than one guide-roller assembly is used, depending upon the length of the drift. The installations usually are placed at 30-ft. intervals. We have found by actual experience that these rollers have increased the life of the haul-back cable approximately 200 per cent, as compared with the usage of the conventional sheave-block pulley. Cable Care The underground rigging crew and the slusher operators are trained in rope splicing. No cable clamps or knots are permitted on slusher cables and all cable "eyes" are spliced. The standard practice has been to use preformed cables of ?-in. diameter for haulage and ½-in. diameter for the haul back. The preformed cables have proved to be important factors for safety in use and speed in making splices. No external lubrication is used on the cables. It has been found that dry ropes have about 400 per cent longer life than those that were lubricated under these operating conditions. An accurate record is kept of all cable life and the tonnage moved by the slushers in each working place, and if the rope wear is excessive in any particular working place, an investigation is made to determine the reason. Wire-rope Sling for Snatch-block Anchor The rope sling is shown by Figs. 3 and 4. These slings support the snatch-block pulley for the haul-back rope. The standard practice at Kimberly is to use a roller-bearing snatch-block pulley 10 in. in diameter. The snatch-block housings are equipped with a clevis attachment in preference to swivel hooks, as it has been found that the more rigid clevis keeps the cable in better alignment. The snatch blocks are hung from the cable sling, which is wrapped around the posts of the drift sets as shown on Fig. 3. This method of anchoring the pulley provides better anchorage and flexibility than those of the rigid or spring-mounted types. When the slusher-drift headings are being advanced, the snatch blocks are hung from a "gin" pole ahead of the last set of timbers' An employee is assigned on each production shift to take care of the lubrication of all slusher hoists that are being used and he is provided with tools for minor repairs.

In the technical literature of 1965 and 1966, there were several papers about future power for mining and construction equipment. Most of these papers made the same predictions: •More power •Better reliability and durability •Ease of service and maintenance •Operating economy •The possibility of future environmental concern •The entrance of the gas turbine In the five years that have since passed, some of the 1965-66 predictions have at least partially come true, while others have not been fully realized. Actually the list still appears sound today. Priorities may have changed and details may be different, but the main points cover the requirements for future prime movers quite well.

Stress-stvain curves are presented for Ni3Al (y') cvystals in several ovientations, deformed in tension and compression at constant displacement rate, at temperatures from 70° to 2000°F. Both the yield stress and wovk havdening increase with temperature, with the magnilude of the effect dependent on ovientation. The yield stress maximum occurs at 1500°F in [001], at 1400°F in [011], and at 1200°F in [111]. The suppression of the yield stress peak in [011] and [111] orientatiorzs is due to the onset of cube slip, rather than octahedval slip, a1 elerated temperatures. The temperature and orientalion dependence of work hardening in nominal single slip orientations corvelates with changes in the CRSS ratio for octahedral slip and cube slip, in agreement with a model for work hardening based on pinning of screw dislocalions by cross slip from an octahedral plane into a cube plane. It is concluded that the unique plastic properties of y' have a decisive influence on both ductility and strength characleristics of y +y' nickel-base superalloys. It has long been recognized that the strength of y + y' nickel-base superalloys depends on the precipitation of the y' phase [basically Ni3(Al,Ti)]. This paper presents new data on the strength characteristics of single crystals of simple y' (Ni3Al), and forms the first step in a systematic program aimed at elucidating the mechanisms of hardening in the complex commercial alloys. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Single crystals of off-stoichiometric NiA1 were grown from the melt under vacuum by a modified Bridgman method. The melt was poured into a preheated alumina mold and crystal growth was promoted from one end by gradient cooling. The crystals were homogenized by annealing in hydrogen at 2400° F for 72 hr followed by furnace cooling. Chemical analysis of samples taken from several crystals gave an average composition of 88.2 wt pct Ni. Spectrographic analysis gave as the principal impurities in weight percent— Si (0.02), Mg (0.01), Fe (0.02), Ti (0.002), Cu (0.008), and Co (0.03). Tensile specimens with specifications as in Fig. 1 were prepared by a series of operations involving electrical discharge machining, precision grinding, and electropolishing. Compression specimens with dimensions 1/4 by 1/4 by -3/4 in. were prepared in a similar manner, except for the initial shaping operation using a precision cut-off wheel/two-circle goniometer unit to give selected crystal orientations. Specimens were deformed in a Baldwin-Wiedemann testing machine with furnace attachment, using a strain rate of 5 x 10-4 sec-1. The strain measuring device consisted of extension arms attached to the tensile grips (or compression plattens) at one end and leading out of the furnace to an LVDT at the other. Temperature was controlled by a thermocouple placed in contact with the specimen. According to the known phase diagram for the Ni/A1 system,' when an alloy of the specified composition is cooled from the melt, primary y (nickel solid solution) dendrites grow at the expense of the liquid phase, which becomes enriched in aluminum. At the eutectic composition the remaining liquid freezes as a two-phase mixture of y + y' (Ni3Al). Upon further cooling, a solid state transformation occurs, involving the precipitation of y' in the primary dendrites, and the complete transformation of the eutectic mixture to massive y'. The as-cast structure consists, therefore, of y + y' dendrites with interdendritic regions of massive y', i.e., transformed eutectic, Fig. 2. 2) DISCUSSION OF RESULTS 2.1) Stress-Strain Curves. Fig. 3 shows tensile stress-strain curves for crystals in orientations close to [001] deformed at temperatures from 70° to 2000°F. Both the yield stress and total elongation are strongly temperature-dependent. At 70°F, easy glide is absent, and the work hardening coefficient BIT - G/300. At T > 1500°F, the negative slope of the stress-strain curves is due to pronounced necking in the crystals. The yield stress maximum at 1500° F corresponds with a minimum in the ductility, Fig. 4. IN 1938 the Republic Steel Corp. announced that it had leased the ore mines and other property of the Witherbee Sherman Corp. at Port Henry, N. Y. The announcement brought forth an interesting reaction. Two questions were asked repeatedly: (1) Is the iron product high grade? (2) Is there a substantial reserve? The answer to both questions was and is a decided and emphatic "Yes."

The mine blacksmith and drill-steel sharpening shop at the Franklin mine of the New Jersey Zinc Co. is on the surface, adjoining the main shaft. It is a brick building, 51 by 30 ft. inside dimensions, with a corrugated iron roof and concrete floor. .About two-thirds of the steels used are brought up through the main shaft; the remainder through two auxiliary shafts and are carried to the shop by team or truck. At each shaft sufficiently large stocks of sharp drills of various typcs are kept to replace all the dull steels that may be sent up; while at the shop enough sharp drills are kept to replace the dull steels in the stocks kept at the auxiliary shafts. Though this entails keeping a larger number of drill steels in service than might be required by other methods, there is less hurry in the sharpening shop and the steels have a longer period of rest. If a rest from use enables steel to recover from fatigue strains, this method secures that rest. The forms shown in Fig. 1 are supplied to each shift boss in books of 100. These are used to requisition sharp drills from the shaft stocks and cnable the men at the tops of the shafts to sort out the required sizes and to hare them ready to be sent to the various shaft stations. At one of the auxiliary shafts, the dull drills are placed on a platform from which they are dumped into the body of the wagon that takes them to the shop.

THE Isley furnace control, here presented as a novelty in furnace construction, is, in principle, one of the oldest methods of maintaining furnace heat for industrial purposes. Records unearthed in Egyptian tombs and the primitive methods of melting metal practiced by African tribes today indicate that fanning the fire and forcing the furnace by bellows have been an effective means of regulating heat for man's work during thousands of years. Even today, these cruder forms of mechanical draft production are still nn use within the borders of this most highly developed industrial land. Stacks, as we know them, are of com- paratively recent historical age but their attractive simplicity and seeming effectiveness have made them exceedingly popular. And so we find one of the most important types of furnace the world has even known, the open-hearth furnace, duly and more or less properly equipped with a chimney. The regenerative, or reversing, type of furnace, how-ever, required another mechanism between its hearth and the stack to provide a means for alternately con-necting one side and the other of its system of regen-erative chambers and flues to the stack and to a source of fuel and air supply respectively. Various types of reversing valves were developed, some of which are re-markably well designed for maximum efficiency and ease of installation as well as operation. However, this combination has a number of inherent faults which are so difficult to correct as to make efforts in the direction of improving over-all efficiency almost futile. These inherent difficulties are as follows: (1) The necessarily high temperature at which the gases must be delivered to the stack in order to make it operative. (2) The great temperature difference incidental to the reversal of flue gas and air and consequently the large variation in preheated air and fuel delivered to the furnace dur-ing the cycle. (3) The leakages and resistances created by the reversing apparatus and the complicated flues necessary. (4) The inadequate range of control af-forded by the natural draft system, especially under adverse atmospheric conditions.

THE mechanical properties of an alloy under given test conditions are in the main determined by the grain size and the phases present, their distribution and temperature-time dependence. Alloys intended for use at elevated temperatures, especially multiphase alloys depending upon precipitation reactions for strengthening, are particularly susceptible to changes in the phases present. Unfortunately, for modern superalloys, very little published information exists which relates the mechanical properties to the basic structural variables. The present work is an effort to do this for an alloy widely used in aircraft gas turbines and related applications, Udimet 500.* The mechanical properties inves- two heats is within the normal specifications for the alloy. However, the elements which most strongly influence the phase reactions, C, Ti, Al, and Mo, are comparable in the two heats. There was no intentional addition of boron, but normal pickup is about 0.002 pct. The vacuum-melted material was received in the form of centerless ground wrought bar stock % in. diam. PHASE STUDIES A) Methods—Two methods were used to determine the phases present: X-ray diffraction measurements on electrolytically digested residues, and microscopic examination. No single commonly used electrolyte will reveal all the phases that may be present; therefore, two complementary acids were selected: HCl and H3PO4. The necessity for this will be shown below in the results. The acid concentrations used were 10 pct HC1 in alcohol and 10 pct H3 PO4 in water. The current density was maintained below 0.1 amp per sq in. Residues were rinsed and separated by centrifuga-tion. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained in a 114 mm Debye-Scherrer type camera using cobalt radiation. A temperature of 2250°F was selected to obtain as complete solutioning of phases as possible without encountering incipient melting. Specimens were

Drilling activity in the South Texas area, which includes the South Corpus Christi and Laredo districts, showed a marked decline during 1941 from that of the preceding year. The rate of new discoveries, however, 'compared favorably with exploratory results of 1940 because of the many new productive sands opened in existing fields. South Texas completions for 1941 were about 12.3 per cent below the 1940 figure, compared with an increase of approximately 5.5 per cent in the total number of completions in the United States during 1941 over the 1940 total. During the year, 1452 wells were drilled in this area; of these, 1205 were drilled in or as extensions to the proven fields, and 247 were rank wildcats drilled in search of new producing pools. The comparable 1940 figures were: 1320 field or extension wells and 336 rank wildcats, a total of 1656 completions. This represents a decline in 1941 of approximately 8.7 per cent in proven-area wells, and of about 26.5 per cent in rank wildcats. It must be stressed that wells that were considered rank wildcats at the beginning of operations, but which opened production later classified as additions to existing fields, are not regarded as rank wildcats in this and previous annual reports on this same area. These wells are classified as semiwildcats (Table 2). There were 13 new oil or distillate fields and 4 new gas areas opened during the year, as listed in the next column. This listing represents a decline of 32 per cent from the 25 new areas found during the previous year, and to a great extent can be attributed to the 26.5 per cent decline in wildcatting. The rate of new discoveries based on the 247 wildcats was 14.5 to I, which compares somewhat unfavorably with the 13.4 to I ratio obtained in 1940 (Table 5). Dry wildcats totaled 230. The proof of the prolific character of the South Texas area as a source of petroleum reservoirs is to be found in the fact that of the 1205 field or extension (semiwildcat) wells completed during the past year 61 opened production from new sands or found crude in formerly distillate-producing sands. The 1940 total of 1320 such wells accounted for 50 horizons that provided either new production or crude in distillate sands, and in this respect the 1941 rate of discovery shows to greater advantage, the ratios for new sands being 19.7 to I for 1941 and 26.4 to I for 1940. During the year, 1452 wells were drilled in this area; of these, 1205 were drilled in or as extensions to the proven fields, and 247 were rank wildcats drilled in search of new producing pools. The comparable 1940 figures were: 1320 field or extension wells and 336 rank wildcats, a total of 1656 completions. This represents a decline in 1941 of approximately 8.7 per cent in proven-area wells, and of about 26.5 per cent in rank wildcats. It must be stressed that wells that were considered rank wildcats at the beginning of operations, but which opened production later classified as additions to existing fields, are not regarded as rank wildcats in this and previous annual reports on this same area. These wells are classified as semiwildcats (Table 2). There were 13 new oil or distillate fields and 4 new gas areas opened during the year, as listed in the next column. This listing represents a decline of 32 per cent from the 25 new areas found during the previous year, and to a great extent can be attributed to the 26.5 per cent decline in wildcatting. The rate of new discoveries based on the 247 wildcats was 14.5 to I, which compares somewhat unfavorably with the 13.4 to I ratio obtained in 1940 (Table 5). Dry wildcats totaled 230. The proof of the prolific character of the South Texas area as a source of petroleum reservoirs is to be found in the fact that of the 1205 field or extension (semiwildcat) wells completed during the past year 61 opened production from new sands or found crude in formerly distillate-producing sands. The 1940 total of 1320 such wells accounted for 50 horizons that provided either new production or crude in distillate sands, and in this respect the 1941 rate of discovery shows to greater advantage, the ratios for new sands being 19.7 to I for 1941 and 26.4 to I for 1940. THE Huitzuco mercury deposits have been described by C. W. Vaupell,1 therefore the general information such as location, history, production, etc. will not be repeated here. The present owners acquired the property when the deep levels of the Cruz mine were flooded, and it was believed that a relatively large tonnage of low-grade ore and fills would be encountered in the flooded section, because of the early mining methods used in the Cruz mine. The mine was partly unwatered and about 187,000 tons of fills was pit-sampled in the San Cayetano stope. These fills average 2.4 kg. Hg per ton. During the period of maximum production at Huitzuco, the ores were sorted in the mine and cobbed into 3-in. pieces, which were treated in Scott furnaces. Large pieces of raw ore are found in the sinter, and it is indicated that both recovery and costs were not very satisfactory. Recent practice has been to treat the ores in closed retorts made of 10-in. pipes. Because of the presence of combined antimony in the mineral livingstonite (HgS.2Sb2S3) and considerable native sulphur, little or no metallic mercury is recovered in the condensers and a second retorting of the condenser muds is necessary. This makes the treatment of the ores expensive and tends to low recoveries of mercury. The principal costs of retorting are, in their relative order: (1) fuel, (2) low recovery of mercury, (3) replacement of retort pipes, (4) labor. METHODS TESTED Three series of experiments have been made, with the object of reducing the costs of recovering mercury and antimony from the ores, by: (1) wet metallurgical methods, (2) bulk roasting in large mechanical furnaces, (3) concentration to reduce the bulk to be followed by roasting in some mechanical furnace. The wet metallurgical methods did not appear feasible because of the high cost of the alkaline solvents used, and investigations of these were not carried beyond the preliminary stage.

DISCUSSION Judson S. Hubbard (The Humphreys Investment Co., Denver)—In this very interesting paper several brief references are made to the Humphreys spiral, a device used for cleaning fine coal. In Table I, Plants 76 and 77, data are given on spiral performance treating Raton and Trinidad coal. The fine coal, as fed to the spiral in these instances, is actually a table middling, hence the more easily treated material was previously removed and a large number of particles were present which were difficult to clean. Mr. W. M. Bertholf of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Co. presented a paper in February, 1946, Cleaning Table Middlings from a Coal Washery with the Humphreys Spiral Concentrator, from which I quote: "In considering the results of our tests it should be noted that the feed was our table middling, and that any real separation is a 'moral victory' as there is little material that could properly be called coal and practically no heavy rock, the consequences being that previous attempts to clean the middling have not at all been successful." Referring again to Table I, Plants 72, 73, 74, and 75, these data were obtained by Yancey and Geer and others and presented at the February 1950 Meeting, AIME, in a paper entitled Laboratory Performance Tests of the Humphreys Spiral as a Cleaner of Fine Coal. Results shown for those tests involve all particles from 8 mesh through the colloids, which admittedly is not an ideal situation for spiral feed if much refuse is contained in the —80 mesh or —100 mesh size range. As an illustration of the effect of treating too broad a size range, let us consider Plant No. 75, Kentucky No. 9 seam. Spiral feed was 8 mesh x 0. Now had this been 8x100 mesh the percentage of misplaced material would have been 8.0 pct instead of the reported 15.26 pct. Similar comparisons can be made on the other data presented with respect to the spiral. Other types of equipment show a similar trend in that whenever too fine a size is treated in a given unit process the percentage of misplaced material increases. Since the spiral is working near the finer end of the size range, it will sometimes be advantageous to treat the entire range of —8 mesh material rather than to deslime and make a fair showing on, say, the +80 or + I00 mesh. Desliming is subsequently done in any case in the dewatering or thickening operation. Results obtained by spiraling any given coal depend on factors too numerous and complex to discuss here, but there are strong indications that proper preparation of feed to the spiral can improve results obtained on some of the raw coals tested. This is clearly pointed out at the end of the aforementioned paper by Yancey and Geer. "The spiral is an extremely simple device which involves no moving parts and is constructed almost entirely of unmachined castings. Since it is such an uncomplicated mechanism, operation is simple and virtually foolproof. These characteristics, which go far toward insuring low cost operation, are attractive attributes in any coal cleaning unit." Certain equipment used in conjunction with the spiral has resulted in a decrease in the percentage of misplaced material, notably in actual practice the launder screen which is used to remove objectionable high ash fines from a spiral-washed coal product. Private correspondence with the U. S. Bureau of Mines has intimated that an additional yield of coal is possible by flotation of the spiral middling. Possible future improvements and developments may result from other methods now under consideration. Finally, some compromise must be made between the best metallurgical performance and the best practical or economical results. Mr. Lyons emphasizes in his summary this objective of overall economy in selection of equipment. G. B. Walker (American Cyanamid Co., Stamford, Conn.)—I had the pleasure of reviewing the draft of this paper and my curiosity was aroused by the data given for Tromp plants, in that all of the examples shown appeared to be 2-product separations, whereas all the Tromp plants with which I am familiar have been 3-product units. The data given for plants No. 101 and 102 appear to be taken from Tromp's brochure on his process and represent the results obtained at the Dominale plant in Holland which was operated for many years by Mr. Tromp. The plant, which was designed to treat 58 tons per hr, was sampled while treating 35 tons per hr of 3Y4x-in. coal. Example 101 appears to conform to what would result if the middling product were calculated into the refuse product, while Example 102 represents the calculation of the middling into the coal product. It is believed that Examples 103 and 104 represent the operation of the Willem-Sophie Mine in Holland recalculated on the same basis. In checking the English examples given by numbers 14, 15, 16, and 17, the same procedure seems to have been followed. These results have, apparently, been taken from an article in Colliery Engineering in August 1941, describing the initial operation of the Williamthorpe Colliery of the Hardwick Colliery Co. Two vessels are employed in this plant, one to treat soft coal and one to treat hard coal. Example No. 14 presents the results that could be obtained from the soft coal bath if the middling were calculated into the refuse, and Example 15 the results when the middling is calculated into the coal. Examples 16 and 17 represent the same expedient in the case of the hard coal bath. Of interest to this discussion is the fact that during the past year the Simon-Carves Engineering Co. in England has installed in the Williamthorpe plant their new "Sim-Car" medium cleaning system which is based on magnetic extraction and control and which is licensed under the Heavy-Media Separation Processes patents by the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. WE have come a long way since the order of the day was the chance discovery of mineral deposits, breaking rock with fire and water, melting metals in open fires in holes in the ground or in primitive furnaces, digging pits to collect. oil seepages, burning eroded coal outcrops to develop heat, and so on. During the past 5500 years, gradual improvements in methods and equipment have come about, explosives have been developed and used, steel has been used in increasing quantities and effectiveness as its physical and chemical characteristics, and composition have been altered and made to serve specific ends, hand equipment has given way to almost completely mechanized operation Thus, by the aid of mechanical equipment, one person is now able to move several thousand times as much material as one person was able to move a relatively few years ago. When this Institute was formed 75 years ago, the Suez Canal had been open to traffic but three years. It had taken ten years to complete and was built under the direction of French engineers by workers of whom many were girls. During the first four years of construction, these workers dug up the sand with their fingers, threw it into rush baskets, carried the load a hundred feet or so and dumped it 2 (With the termination of forced labor, dredgers completed the digging of the channel.) THE PAST YEAR saw important developments in all the main branches of zinc metallurgy, which can only be douched on briefly here. Vertical Retort Smelting-The New Jersey Zinc Co. reports their operations to be about as last year when the number of vertical retorts at the Palmerton plant was increased from 16 to 28. The first unit of eight vertical retorts at Oker, Germany, to treat the Rammelsburg complex ore was completed early in the year. A second unit has been under construction and is probably ready to start operations about this time. Each unit is rated for 10,000 metric tons of zinc per year. A plant of 40,000 metric tons annual capacity is the goal. A reflux plant was also built to make high-grade zinc. The plant program is being -carried forward with government finan¬cial assistance, as was the case with the electrolytic zinc plant at Magdeburg. Government subsidies cover mining and 'smelting, and allow for depreciation and reasonable return on invested capital, according to U. S. Bureau of Mines reports.

IF you wish to make the acid that is vulgarly called common aqua fortis,* for parting gold from silver, you must first provide as many cucurbits and alembics, receivers, and materials as you wish, and then make a furnace that is long and conveniently wide for holding three or four pairs of cucurbits or as many as you wish. If you have to make this by art in order to work a large quantity, you could make several small furnaces for it seems that not more than three or four pairs are suitable for one. Prepare the places where the cucurbits are to stand with bottoms or covers made of potter's clay or tiles that are half round like the bottoms of the cucurbits and have a little rim around the top so that they can be built in. Proceed to build these in in pairs, one by the other with convenient spaces between, placing an iron support across to make this place stronger and more secure. In every corner and also in the middle a hole must be made as a vent for the smoke, as is done in all furnaces. You will see the form of this somewhat roughly drawn here. [Figure 25] Near this prepare a number of cucurbits which are made of glass, as clear and uniform as possible and very well formed. There must be no bubbles or other indentations in these, for they would be dangerous and uncertain for your work. Lute these with lutum sapientiae up to within three dita or less from where the neck narrows. This lute must be spread out well all over to the thickness of two threads or a little more. Then cover and make them strong with this well-made plaster, and finally dry it, taking care that there are no clefts or cracks such as clays are often prone to make even though they be well prepared.
