IF a metallurgist employed in an industry producing mechanical parts or assemblies wishes to make the most of his opportunities he will be concerned with every use of metals in that industry. He will not only take part in the testing and treating of the metals used but will assist in their selection and study their behavior in processing and in service. In addition, he will attempt to develop an understanding of the problems involved in the use of the metals in all plant tools and equipment. Metallurgists that follow this course will soon recognize that frequently too little thought is given to the effect of the design of parts on the way the metal in them is expected to behave in service. He will come to realize that changes in the design of a part will often be much more useful than changes in the hardness, strength, composition, or structure of the metals used in them. Does this mean that a metallurgist is out of place in these industries and that he should leave the field to others or be content to fill only a minor role?

THE most intense earthquake on the Pacific coast in the last several years, and probably the second most intense shock to occur in Nevada since it was settled, was felt in many Western States shortly after 10 p.m. on Dec. 20, 1932. Be- cause the rifted area contered about the northern end of Cedar Mountain it is referred to as the Cedar Mountain, Nevada, earthquake. An idea of the intensity of the shock may be gathered from the distance at which it was felt: in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Washing- ton, Oregon, California and Arizona. It is the strongest quake centering in Nevada since the Pleasant Valley earthquake on Oct. 2, 1915. Despite the strength of the vibrations and the large area over which they were felt, relatively little damage was done. The extent of the damage consisted of a few old stone buildings demolished as shown in Fig. 1, much cracked and fallen plaster, many chimneys shaken down and considerable cracking of brick walls. There were no deaths and four people were but slightly injured. The small amount of damage was due, largely, to the scarcity of structures within the area of strong vibrations, but an important factor was the aridity of the region (see Fig. 2) and the shallowness of soil cover so that there was but little water-saturated loose material in which strong secondary vibrations could be formed. Had this earthquake occurred in a region of heavy precipitation and dense population the damage to property and loss of life would undoubtedly have been large, with consequently much more newspaper publicity.

IN extension of a suggestion already made to account for certain features observed in the Juneau gold-belt in southeastern Alaska,' it is the object of the present paper to indicate in detail certain conditions in which deformation of rocks under their own weight might lead to the production of fractures in which veins could be deposited. A direct, uniformly-distributed pressure of sufficient intensity applied to an elastic brittle mass offering strong resistance to deformation produces rupture. In a material of ideal properties the surfaces of rupture under such pressure would be shearing planes inclined at 45° to the line of force, unless there be preliminary deformation, in which case this angle would be greater than 45°. This general conclusion, resting upon ana¬lytical mechanics, is completely supported by the results obtained by Daubrée in experiments upon the deformation of wax and resin prisms under compression. Let us then first con¬sider one of Daubrée's diagrams. In the case illustrated in Fig. 1, four sets of fractures in two appproximately right-angled pairs (that is to say, in conjugate sets) were produced by end-wise compression of the square cross-sectioned prisms. These fractures cut the axis of compression at approximately equal angles, not varying greatly from 45°. The location of the four sets of fractures is obviously determined by the shape of the prism, since the material in each corner acts in a way as a buttress, permitting the bulging to take place most readily on the sides. An informal discussion on the application of physical chemistry to steelmaking was held during the Annual Meeting of the Institute in February, 1929. Alexander L. Feild presided. In opening the session, Mr. Feild said: We are all familiar with the cooperative mining and metallurgical studies that were begun in 1920 by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the Carnegie Institute of Technology, and the Mining and Metallurgical Advisory Boards, and in particular with the work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking which was launched under the technical direction of Dr. C. H. Herty, Jr., in May, 1926. It was this work at Pittsburgh more than anything else that was the immediate cause of the formation within the Institute of a committee on the physical chemistry of steelmaking. During the latter part of 1927 a small group of Institute members interested in. the general subject of the physical chemistry of steelmaking undertook the organization of a subcommittee within the Iron and Steel Committee, to foster an active interest in this comparatively new field among the Institute membership and to obtain papers for publication in the Transactions, covering the various phases of the general subject. This plan was conceived by C. E. Meissner, to whose active efforts at the outset as well as during the past year is largely due whatever measure of success the plan has thus far attained. The subcommittee, now a committee of the Iron and Steel Division, was recognized and formally made a part of the Institute's organization at the February, 1928, meeting. As originally organized and as const,it,uted during the past year the committee has been made up as follows: C. H. Herty, Jr., C. D. King, A. B. Kinzel, John Johnston, C. E. Meissner, L. F. Reinartz, R. B. Sosman, and A. L. Feild, Chairman. Dr. C. H. Herty, Jr. has just been elected chairman for the coming year and C. E. Meissner has been reelected as secretary. From the outset it has been the settled policy of the committee to make membership an annual rather than a permanent matter and to reconstitute in part the membership of the committee each year by dropping a certain number of members and adding new members. THE observation of the flow layers, or Lüders' lines, produced in mild steel when it is stressed into the plastic range often provides considerable useful information for the study of the fundamental mechanism of the plastic flow of metals. It is a commonly observed fact that as soon as the upper yield point in a mild-steel tensile-test bar is passed, an unstable condition develops in the equilibrium, the load on the testing machine drops and if the surface of the bar contains a thin mill scale, the latter begins to flake off rapidly along certain "lines." These "lines" are in reality traces of wedge-shaped flow layers and are formed by the intersection of the surface of slip and the surface of the bar. The average plane of the flow layer itself has been found by various experimenters to be inclined at an angle of approximately 45° to the axis of the test bar. In a body of more complicated shape stressed in possibly a different man-ner, the tangent planes to the flow layers at each point seem in many cases to be inclined at an angle of about 45° to the principal stress direc-tions at the point. As examples of the latter may be mentioned the logarithmic spirals obtained when a rivet hole is punched in a thin plate, or when a tube is subjected to internal pressure only, etc. Hence if the flow layers are observed from an experiment, the shear-stress trajectories -the curves indicating the directions of the maximum shearing stresses in the body-may then be approximately determined. Since the latter curves form an orthogonal family inclined at 45° to the principal stress directions, the family of principal stress trajectories, or the curves indicating the directions of the principal stresses, may be thus obtained. Although the discontinuous type of stress-strain curve at the yield point is commonly observed with test bars of mild steel, more recent experiments have shown that this is by no means the only material exhibiting this interesting phenomenon. A similar effect has been observed in zinc and cadmium crystals, by Becker and Orowan;1 in duralumin and other aluminum alloys, by Dawidenkow,2 Elam,3 Fell, and others; in copper and copper-alloy crystals, by Elam;5 in brass by Elam;5 in brass wires by deForest;6 in higher carbon steels, tungsten steel, and

JUST as 85 per cent of the total ore produced annually in the United States comes from the Lake Superior region, so does one of its six producing districts-the Mesabi --dominate that region both as to production and total reserves; also in ore Treatment, Mesabi practice is dominant. Therefore, in discussing future reserves or ore treatment one may visualize one big district with five smaller districts as so many satellites. In considering the future less thought need be given to processes than to, economic policies. For thirty years experimental work has now been in progress and every possible ore-treatment process now known has been given attention. This work was started when there was no recognizable danger of running short of ore because of rapid consumption. Thirty years ago the annual production had just progressed beyond the twenty-million bracket for the first time. Today fifty million tons is considered a small production, and last year the aim was for 65 million. At the recent rate of production the life of the estimated reserves of good ore is about 35 years. All who know the local terrain are convinced that, unlike thirty years ago, the chances for discoveries of new big deposits are nil; treatment of lean ores obviously is to become an all-important topic.

IN the belief that a critical study of its operating problems might be a sound investment, the Cuban American Manganese Corporation initiated an ore-treatment research in cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the early objectives of this research naturally became the relationship of the microscopy of the Cuban ores of the Corporation to their flotation treatment. The operations in Cuba have already been described by F. S. Norcross, Jr.7 and the laboratory study of manganese oxide flotation goes back a number of years .4 Broadly speaking, the difficulties encountered in the flotation of manganese ores are that the consumption of reagents is extremely high, the concentrate contains more silica than is desirable and the tailing losses are relatively high. An appreciable betterment on any of these scores would achieve a definite betterment in costs, quantity of minable ores, and quality of product. The microscope study discussed in this paper was made on samples from the Quinto mine, from the Ponupo mine, and from mill products at various stages of passage of the ore through the mill. The writers have had access to Company records and in particular to the petro¬graphic studies made on thin sections of ore by the late Professors R. J. Colony and Philip Krieger, of Columbia University. They acknowledge their debt to both of these men for the help derived from the reports. Manganese oxides are black, friable, smudging. It is, therefore, very difficult to judge operations by inspection. The mineralogy of manganese compounds seems to be confused, and the authors believe that many more minerals have been described than actually exist. Much of this difficulty is due to the prevalence of the structural conditions that will be discussed further in this paper; namely, the porosity and the friability of the ores, and the extremely intimate association of minute manganiferous mineral crystals with impurities of various sorts. By all odds the most important manganese mineral in Cuba is the one that in this paper is called "psilomelane." The name "psilomelane" has been used in so many different ways that the choice of it for this ore may not be approved by all. However, it seems to be the best under the circumstances. This mineral accounts for about 97 per cent of the manganese in the ores of the Quinto and Ponupo mines and in the mill feed. The remaining odd 3 per cent consists mostly of pyrolusite together with minor amounts of other manganese oxide minerals. The results on the rates of vaporization of Fe-Ni alloys, levitated by an electromagnetic field in a stagnant atmosphere of helium, are shown to be in close agreement with those predicted theoretically. AS shown in Part I of this series of papers, the rates of vaporization of metals enhanced by convection currents are increased further by the process of condensation of metal vapor when there is a steep temperature gradient in the boundary layer. At the time this theoretical work was completed one of the authors (K. C. Mills) had already carried out some experimental work on the rates of vaporization of molten Fe-Ni alloys. The experimental work was done under conditions which make it possible to compare the experimental rate data with those predicted on theoretical grounds. EXPERIMENTAL The object of the experiments was to evaluate the activities in a number of binary metal systems. The details of the experimental technique are given in another paper by Mills, Kinoshita, and Grieveson,2 and, for the present purpose, a brief mention of the relevant features of the experimental method will be adequate. Using an induction coil, the metal weighing about 1 to 1.5 g was levitated by the electromagnetic field in a stagnant atmosphere of pure helium. The helium was freed from oxygen and water vapor in the usual manner, and its pressure in the vaporization chamber was maintained at 1 atm through a bleeder device. The vaporization chamber consisted of a pyrex tube, 2.8 cm diam, with a side arm connected to the helium bleeder. The bottom of the tube, shaped conical, was surrounded by the induction coil, and the top was sealed with an optical flat for the purpose of measuring the melt temperature with a two-color optical pyrometer. By suitable adjustment of the high-frequency power input, the metal was brought to the desired temperature in about 30 sec of levitation. After a specified vaporization time, e.g., 3 to 4 min, the alloy was quenched by switching off the power. The amount of metal vaporized was determined from the difference between the initial and final weights of the sample. During the vaporization time, temperature fluctuations of about ±10°C were observed. COMPARISON OF EXPERIMENTAL DATA WITH THEORETICAL VALUES The experimental results are given in Table I. As already mentioned, the attainment of the vaporization temperature took about 30 sec from the moment of levitation. Therefore, the times recorded in Table I are 30 sec less than the total time; this is considered to be a reasonable estimate of actual vaporization times.

Not least among those sub: divisions of the "Ministerio" which underwent radical changes in the general reform was the Serviqo Geologico e Mineralogico do Brasil. This well- known organization was declared extinct, and in its place was created a new cleparttnent ' termed "Departamento Nacional cle Producqao Mineral," which immediately took over all the work of the olcl Servico Geologico ill addition to certain new duties. The effect of small copper additions on the mar-tensitic transformation behavior in Au-47.5 at. pct Cd was studied by measuring electrical resistivity as a function of temperature. The transformation behavior was found to change and transformation start (M,) temperatures for both the ß to ß' and ß to ß' transformations were depressed substantially by the addition of small amounts of copper. Both M, temperatures were lowered approximately 70°C per at. pct Cu. Copper also had the effect of narrowing the transformation hysteresis region (resistivity us temperature), and for the alloy Au-47.5 Cd-1.5 Cu there was little or no hysteresis; in this alloy, the reverse transfmmation upon heating apparently occurs below the thermodynamic equilibrium temperature, To. THE ß phase in the Au-Cd system occurs at the electron/atom ratio 3/2, and is similar to other ß phases in alloys based on copper, silver, or gold. It is of the CsCl type, in which a considerable degree of long-range order persists to the melting temperature.' The phase boundaries of the ß phase are not known precisely below 300° C, but at room tem- perature the phase exists from approximately 46 to 52* at. pct Cd.2 At low temperatures, the ß phase transforms in a diffusionless (martensitic) manner. Alloys having a composition near 47.5 pct Cd transform upon slow cooling to an orthorhombic3 phase, ß', at - 60°C. Alloys having a composition near 49.0 pct Cd, transform at - 30°C into a phase, ß", which has been recently identified as trigonal.4 Alloys having compositions near 48.5 pct Cd will transform into both the 0' and 0" phases over a range of temperatures. In recent years various problems in connection with research work on the preparation and properties of zinc-base alloys have required reliable information concerning the constitution of the zinc-rich portion of the iron-zinc equilibrium diagram. On numerous occasions rather positive indications were obtained that, for example, the solubility of iron in zinc was incorrectly represented on the current equilibrium diagrams. A careful study of all the available literature relating to the iron-zinc system led to the conclusion that much of the early work was unsatisfactory as measured by present standards of experimental accuracy, and as a result it was decided to redetermine the location of the liquidus curve and of adjacent portions of the diagram. Part I of this paper comprises a description of the experimental methods and a summary of the results by means of which the zinc-rich end of- the iron-zinc diagram has been revised in the following ways: 1. Measurements of the solubility of iron in liquid zinc by several different sampling methods, leading to a relocation of the liquidus curve. 2. Microscopic, conductivity, and X-ray studies of the solid solubility of iron in zinc, which, together with thermal analyses, have resulted in new values for the solid solubility and the eutectic temperature and composition. 3. Heating and cooling curves, obtained by a refined differential method, leading to new locations for the two peritectic horizontals. In Part I1 of the paper the attempt is made to review all of the published work having a bearing on the constitution of the iron-zinc system, and to correlate the present results, and some recently published data involving the use of X-ray technique, with the earlier work, much of which was done from 25 to 30 years ago.

SOME time ago, the writer received from W. 0. Borcherdt, Manager of the, works of the Bertha Mineral Co. at Austinville, Va., several specimens of a dense yellowish slag-like material, containing cavities showing clear needle-like crystals, and representing a product formed by the fumes of zinc oxide and basic lead sulphate from the oxide furnace, attacking the firebrick lining of the flues. The matrix, which is of a greenish-yellow color, is made up chiefly of an amorphous glass, carrying numerous crystals, the latter being well-defined, clear, and transparent, but colored a very light yellow by small amounts of ferric oxide. A number of the crystals were carefully separated from the matrix and tested with the blowpipe. They have a fusibility of about 2, yield a globule of lead and a coating of lead oxide before the blowpipe on charcoal, and contain some zinc. Their hardness is 5 to 6. 1 Fig. 1. Under the microscope the crystals appear to be made up of a prism, with narrow faces, and a fairly large pinacoid, but unfortunately show no terminal faces (Fig. 1). Between crossed nicols they gave parallel extinction in. the three planes containing the crystallographic axes, and are therefore orthorhombic. The index of refraction is high. T has been proposed1 on the basis of slip and flow I- that the ideal deformation texture of cold rolled face-centered cubic metals is (110) [112]. As pointed out recently by Brick,' this theory does not account for the difference between the pole figures for cold rolled copper and 70-30 alpha brass, which develop strikingly different spreads from the ideal orientations. It does suggest that the pole figures might be similar for these two metals if they are rolled sufficiently. This has been found to be the case for cold drawn wire.' Experimental Procedure: Four inch sections of cast cakes of copper and 70-30 alpha brass were obtained through the courtesy of the Bridgeport Brass Co. Pieces from these cakes were cold straight rolled 99.993 pct reduction in thickness with the assistance of the Remington Arms Co., Bridgeport, Conn., and by the use of pack rolling. Pole figures were made using the X ray camera and techniques described by Brick.' These pole figures were not significantly different from those previously published for the same materials rolled 98 pct. Eight thicknesses of this strip were then pack rolled. This material failed completely and extensively in tension as shown in fig. 1, developing wavy transverse fractures and bulges. No further work could be done on these samples. Summary: Within the range of this experiment, no attainable amount of cold rolling would cause the pole figures of cold rolled copper and 70-30 brass to become similar, in spite of the fact that such a similarity is predicted by theory.' DESPITE the handicap of reduced production in many districts, the mining industry in 1938 forged steadily ahead toward solution of its minor technical problems and has of-defected major advances in several fields. In California hydraulic mining for gold, shut down for forty years, will shortly be resumed following revision of restrictive laws. Disposal of hydraulicked ground is to be regulated by settling dams so as not to interfere with agriculture. Gold mining has been aided also by the development of a new high-efficiency dry amalgamator which applies the Ramsay mercury separator to the original de Phily process. Based on the principle that crushed ore will follow a rod into a mercury bath, this simple device is primarily adapted to dry areas and is to be available in small, multiple units suitable

CREATION of a "committee on promotion of student interest in coal mining" has an encouraging implication for the coal industry. It is indicative that mining men, both in the field and in the educational centers, realize that the problems of the industry require the best talent available. Young men are being invited into coal on the premise that it needs them, that it offers opportunity for creative work and the realization of their objectives. In initiating a movement which purports to meet the objectives of any young man who spends four or five years of his life in college, the industry does so with a full realization of its obligations.

THE studies of the mechanism of precipitation and of the resulting property changes in aluminum-silver alloys1-3 have presented some new concepts of the aging reaction-concepts that may be fundamental in establishing a complete quantitative theory of age-hardening. With both aluminum-copper and aluminum-silver alloys, thin platelike aggregates form parallel to the Widmanstätten planes of precipitation.1,4 These platelets grow in lateral dimensions and in thickness with aging time until they are thick enough to produce an X-ray diffraction line pattern. Their structure is that of a transition lattice which is coherent with the matrix, since the atomic spacings in the matrix and the precipitate are the same on each side of their common interface.2,4 The equilibrium precipitate forms later from and at the expense of the transition lattice. Since age-hardening occurs during the formation and growth of the transition lattice, the major contributor to the hardening no doubt is the stress condition in the matrix resulting from the matrix holding the precipitate in the coherent condition. The development of these stresses also appears to be responsible for an increase in the electrical resistance superimposed on the normal decrease resulting from a change in the concentration of the matrix during aging.3 The two consecutive reactions constituting the aging process are accompanied by characteristic microstructural alterations. The initial precipitation process results in the formation of a Widmanstätten figure, while the later transformation of the transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice is accompanied by a coalescence, in the case of aluminum-copper alloys,5 and by the appearance of light areas at the grain boundaries with aluminum-silver alloys showing a structural rearrangement of matrix and precipitate.3 This latter reaction is similar microscopically to the so-called "discontinuous precipitation." Possibly discontinuous precipitation is a process that often if not always follows true precipitation of a coherent lattice and during which the transformation of the coherent transition lattice to the equilibrium lattice takes place accompanied by matrix recrystallization.3 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys were made using 99.97 per cent Al or distilled magnesium, with

This paper concerns measurements of low-velocity air currents and investigations on mine ventilation by means of chemical smoke. The chemical smoke used is produced without flame and at ordinary mine temperatures, and therefore presents no ignition hazard in gaseous mines. Mining men who have worked in open-light mines are familiar with the use of tobacco smoke in determining the direction of air travel and approximately measuring low-velocity air currents. The use of chemical smoke is merely a refinement on the use of tobacco smoke and the flameless low-temperature source of chemical smoke has the additional advantage that it can be used in gaseous mines. Ventilation smoke apparatus, Fig I, is a simple device for producing dense white smoke. The apparatus as shown consists of a rubber aspirator bulb which is used to force air through a glass "smoke tube" containing a chemical substance that produces a dense white smoke on contact with air. The apparatus was developed by engineers of the U. S. Bureau of Mines.' It is inexpensive, weighs less than 3 oz, is easily carried in a pocket, and requires no skill to operate. Smoke apparatus is invaluable in practical mine ventilation work for: (I) measuring low-velocity air currents, (2) detecting air leakage, (3) observing airflow characteristics. This paper is written to show the merits of the apparatus, and is based upon findings through its extensive use, during the past six years, in mines operated by the Lehigh Navigation Coal Co. Inc. The Apparatus Certain chemicals, such as stannic chloride (SnCl4) and pyrosulphuric acid (H2S2O7) produce "white smoke" when exposed to air. Stannic chloride gives off vapors which on contact with moist air cause the formation of solid hydrates, of which SnCl4.5H20 is the most important. Pyrosulphuric acid decomposes when exposed to air with the evolution of sulphur trioxide (SO3) fumes, which become white upon contacting moisture in the air. A chemical, such as one of the above, is the active substance in a smoke tube. The glass tubes are hermetically sealed during manufacture, and are made ready for use by merely breaking off the tips at the conveniently located file cuts. When the smoke tube is connected to the aspirator, depressing the aspirator bulb forces air into contact with the chemical, and smoke discharges from the open end of the tube. A white solid (a hydrate if stannic chloride is used, or sulphur trioxide if pyrosulphuric acid is used) may occasionally form a cake in the outlet opening of a smoke tube. THE consumption of sulphuric acid, one of the most important commodities in our modern industrial world, is often used as a barometer for industrial activity. The economics of acid manufacture are largely dependent upon the location of the place of consumption and the availability of raw materials in that locality. Sulphuric acid is made from SO2 oxygen from the air and water. Therefore the sulphur dioxide is the only raw material to be considered in an economic study. SO2 can be obtained from almost any material containing inorganic sulphur, such as elemental sulphur, pyrites, coal, sour gas and oil, metallurgical gases, waste gases, or gypsum and anhydrite. Many tons of acid can also be reclaimed by the recovery and concentration of spent acids. The aim of this paper is to present a guide to the economic aspects to be considered when the installation of an acid plant is contemplated. It must be remembered that 1 ton of elemental sulphur produces 3 tons of sulphuric acid and that the shipping of sulphuric acid by tank car is very costly. The size of the plant must also be given careful consideration. For instance, operation of a plant producing 5 tons of acid per day might be warranted in Brazil or Pakistan, whereas economics usually favor buying quantities up to 50 tons per day for use within the United States. Elemental sulphur, when available at the low price of 1 ½ ¢ per lb delivered at an acid plant, has always been the raw material most frequently used for sulphuric acid. All conditions favor its use at this price. The so-called sulphur shortage has been the subject of so many technical papers, magazine articles, and newspaper items during the past year that it hardly seems necessary to mention it again, but a very brief review of the matter will serve as a foundation for the discussion that follows. There is no shortage of sulphur. Only a shortage of low-cost Frasch-mined brimstone exists today. Other more expensive sulphur-bearing materials are plentiful, both in the United States and abroad. The low cost of Frasch-mined brimstone has discouraged the development of higher cost sources. However, the approaching depletion of Gulf Coast dome deposits and the greatly increased demand for sulphur here and abroad have made it necessary for industry to prepare for conversion to utilize sulphur in other forms. For future planning this situation must be considered permanent and not temporary. This conclusion is based on the fact that although sulphur demand will continue to rise, the production of Frasch-mined sulphur probably will not increase greatly beyond its present level of about 5,000,000 long tons per year. The International Materials Conference in Washington estimates 1952 requirements of the free world at nearly 7 ½ million long tons; and the Defense Production Administration has recently set a new goal for 8,400,000 long tons annual domestic production by 1955. The total sulphur equivalent produced in this country in 1950 was 6 million tons. What, then, are the alternatives for the manufacture of the vital chemical, sulphuric acid? Today about 85 pct of this country's sulphur, and nearly 50 pct of the world supply, comes from our Gulf Coast salt domes and is extracted from the earth by Frasch's hot water process. The Gulf Coast salt dome deposits have been the most important known natural deposits in the world, producing 90 million tons of sulphur during the past 50 years. However, at the present rate of extraction these deposits cannot be expected to last indefinitely. Pyrites Pyrites are, and have been for many years, the source of more than 50 pct of the world's sulphur requirements. The principal use, of course, is in the manufacture of sulphuric acid. The use of pyrites in the United States has diminished greatly because of the availability of low cost native sulphur, but pyrites have continued a major source of sulphur in many other countries. The most available pyrites for use in this country are in the form of lump pyritic ore and in mill tailings from flotation of other minerals such as lead, zinc, copper, gold, and silver. An important factor, when the use of pyrites for acid manufacture is being considered, is the disposal of calcine. A ton of sulphuric acid requires approximately ¾ ton of high-grade pyrite and results in ½ ton of calcine. If the calcine is a fairly pure oxide, free of harmful impurities, it can be used, after sintering, in an iron blast furnace burden. Its value might be as high as 15¢ per unit of Fe at the blast furnace; or possibly $10.00 per ton of sinter, if it assays 65 pct Fe. This might result in a credit of $4.00 per ton of acid if the sintering plant and blast furnace are both located adjacent to the acid plant. On the other hand, several factors must be considered before this credit can be realized, i.e., freight to blast furnace, availability of sintering facilities, methods of eliminating impurities, and the removal of valuable metal values. In some locations it would be most economical to dump the calcines.

UNUSUAL problems have arisen at certain iron blast-furnaces in Virginia through the fact that the ore-supplies, derived from the Oriskany formation, contain from a trace up to 1 per cent. of zinc oxide. Since the technical literature bearing on this subject is very scant, the following notes, based on personal experience, will probably be of value to those of our members who are interested in iron blast-furnace practice. The course of zinc through the blast furnace is readily traced. Entering the throat as zinc oxide, finely disseminated through the ore, it descends unchanged to the fusion-zone, since a temperature of 1,000° C. or more is required for its reduction. At the fusion-zone, the zinc oxide is reduced by solid carbon to metallic zinc, which is set free as vapor and rises with the ascending gases to the cooler zones of the furnace. In cooling through the range of temperature from 1,000° to 500° C. the zinc is re-oxidized according to the reaction Zn + CO2 = ZnO + CO, and the resulting zinc oxide, being in a very fine state of division, is readily carried along by the ascending gases. Portions, however, deposit on the descending stock and are carried down, again to pass through the same cycle of changes. Still other portions deposit on the lining of the stack, and gradually form hard masses of "cadmia." Of the remainder of the zinc oxide, the greater part passes out of the furnace, and is either deposited in the down-comer, dust-trap, stoves, boilers and flues, or passes through the chimney into the atmosphere. A small portion escapes reduction and enters the slag as zinc oxide, while still another portion is absorbed into the lining of the furnace.

A STUDY of the structures arising from the decomposition of the a solid solutions in the Cu-Zn and the Cu-Al systems is of peculiar interest in the study of the mechanism of precipitation from solid solutions. It is possible in these alloys, by varying the composition within the ß field, to precipitate from the same basic lattice phases having different lattice structures. It has been rather generally assumed heretofore that the type of structure originating from the decomposition of a solid solution-the Widmanstätten structure-is determined by the lattice structure of the parent solid solution alone. In the first paper of this series1 evidence was advanced which threw doubt upon this hypothesis; but definite proof of the correctness or incorrectness of the hypothesis should be forthcoming from a study of these alloys, for if the structures originating, for example, from the precipitation of the a phase from ß and of the -y phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system should be shown to be crystallographically different, the hypothesis would necessarily be held as definitely disproved. Furthermore, the newer proposal enunciated in the first paper of this series-that the origin of the Widmanstätten structure lies in a cooperation between the lattice of the parent solid solution and that of the precipitate-which at present seems the only alternative hypothesis, would in such an event be given added weight. The work here reported shows that the Widmanstätten structures originating in the precipitation of the a phase from the a and in the precipitation of the -y phase from the ß in the Cu-Zn system are indeed crystallographically different; and incidentally presents some new descriptive information on the Widmanstätten structure from a more general point of view.
