THE papers on geophysics were roughly divided into two groups*, those presented Monday morning being of a more technical and theoretical nature, whereas the afternoon session was principally taken up with discussions of a predominantly geological flavor. Thus it was made possible for those of a mathematical turn of mind to indulge their penchant for formula and differentials before lunch, leaving the field comparatively free, after lunch, for the geologists to learn of practical applications. The advantage of this classification is evident, and it is to be hoped that in some future meetings it will be possible to hold joint sessions of the geophysicists and mining geologists, to consider the overlap of the two fields.

The Dawson coal-mines are owned aid operated by the Stag Canon Fuel Co., of which Dr. James Douglas is President and E. L. Carpenter general manager. The property is situated in Colfax county, N. M., and the openings now in operation are in townships 28 and 29 N R. 20 E., and township 28 N E. 21 E., shown in Fig. I. The mines are part of the southern end of the Raton coal-field, which extends north into Colorado and embraces many coal-camps of the Trinidad section. II. Geology. Geologically, the coal-measures, commonly known as the Laramie series of the Cretaceous system, have x thickness of about 800 ft. in the vicinity of Damson. The coal makes an excellent coke, and, according to some authorities, its coking properties are due to the action of intruded sheets and sills of igneous rock, the sheets occasionally thickening into masses resembling laccoliths, at such places making nearer approach to the coal and sometimes producing small areas of natural coke. There are but few dikes throughout the entire southern portion of the field and little or no faulting along the dikes. In some parts of this great coal-field the intrusive sheets are far removed in the green shales below the coal-measures, and are so much altered as to be difficult of identification. There is but little disturbance of the strata throughout the Raton coal-field in as far as it extends into New Mexico. There are two workable seams in the coal-measures, and two or three smaller coal-seams, ranging from 1 to 2.5 ft. in thick-

IN his recent paper, "The Controversial Art of Flotation," (Mining Technology, March, 1944) E. H. Rose states that "flotation is a science in so many variables that only art can blend them." This statement is apt. It contains meat. In other words, a valid scientific reason is behind every flotative effect. Some of these reasons we understand, but much the greater number of them still escape us. This does not prevent us from "going places," as familiarity and experience with the problems result in an increasingly intelligent and artful handling of these effects. Hypotheses are built up by the individuals concerned to explain certain happenings. Many of these hypotheses have to be abandoned when placed under the glaring scrutiny of actual trial. A few survive the severest of tests, come through unscathed, and are elevated to the rank of theories, something susceptible of certain chemical and physical explanation, under the conditions of the particular plant concerned. If these theories continue to hold water under all the variations existing in most milling plants, they gradually become accepted as facts in the minds of the plant operators. But-and here is a big BUT-these so-called facts may fall down completely in another plant working under an entirely different set of conditions. In other words, each plant tends gradually to build up its own facts, which may or may not be facts at another operation.

The microstructure of explosion-bonded pairs of similar and dissimilar metals has been investigated by electron microscopy. A review of the specific problems encountered and the methods used for obtaining surface replicas and thin-film transmission specimens of the bond interface is given. The bond area is mainly characterized by continuous and practically diffusionless metallurgical bonding. The very large shear stresses induced along the collision front of the plates being joined causes extreme grain elongation and a symmetrical pattern of subgrains in the bonding direction. The bond zone is also characterized by a very high density of dislocations and pressure-induced twins. Localized heating occurring during the cladding process can result in partial re-crystallization or the formation of thin layers of molten material. The force of precisely controlled explosions causing a high-velocity impact between metal plates has been used for several years to achieve metallurgical bonding between an extremely wide variety of metals. This method essentially consists of accelerating a plate to high velocity toward a stationary plate by a detonating explosive. Since the restrictions to bonding are not those encountered with conventional nethods, it becomes possible to bond pairs of metals having widely different mechanical properties that are immiscible or form brittle intermetallic compounds. Many applications of such composite metals are found in the field of corrosion protection as well as numerous other fields; for example, explosion bonding is being applied for fabricating the materials used by the United States Mint in the new sandwich-type coins. The primary condition for establishing a metallurgical bond is that absolutely clean metal surfaces be brought together. Any metal exposed to the atmosphere is covered with oxides, adsorbed gases, and other contaminants; even a very forceful impact of two such surfaces is not sufficient for bonding. Cowan and Holtz-man,"' who reviewed the dynamics of colliding plates in detail, showed that in order to achieve a good bond the explosion conditions must be chosen in such a way that the plate collision velocity is less than the sonic velocity, in which case no oblique shock waves are attached to the collision front. A pressure wave is then generated ahead of the collision line, and the material forming the colliding surface of each of the plates flows forward and is ejected in the form of a spray, the so-called jet. The dynamic elastic limit of the metals must be exceeded so that there is sufficient plastic deformation. At the point where the jet formed by the junction of the inner surface layers of both plates separates from the combined plates, the material experi- ences a very high shearing strain and the pressure can reach several hundred kilobars. This process strongly influences the microstructure of the bond zone as will be seen later. Behind the collision front, uncontami-nated layers of internal material are brought together under high pressure and are thus metallurgically bonded. I) STRUCTURE OF EXPLOSION BONDS The different types of explosion bonds that can be obtained depend on the explosion conditions, and have been investigated by Cowan and Holtzman,1'2 Holtzman,3 Klein; Bahrani and crossland,' and Buck and Horn-bogen. The preferred kind for practical applications is the so-called wavy bond, typical examples of which are given in Fig. 1 showing light micrographs of various metal-to-metal interfaces. In forming this type-- of bond the collision energy is mainly expended in jetting, the formation of waves, and localized melting. Beyond the crest of the waves, eddy-shaped areas are observed in which the two metals are mixed in a complex pattern of streaks. Cowan and Holtzmanl first proposed that this wavy pattern is analogous to periodic eddy shedding in the flow of a viscous fluid around an obstacle (Von Karman's eddy street). The mass of metal ahead of the stagnation point, which is associated with the jet and has forward momentum, plays the role of an obstacle and the eddies created in the flow of solid metal around the stagnation point are preserved in the final clad specimen. This idea has been reviewed more recently by Klein4 and the variables involved in the wave formation have been discussed in some detail by Bahrani and crosslands and Buck and Hornbogen.6 Several studies of the structure of explosion bonds by light metallography have already been published.1-6 Aside from the waviness and the eddies which were mentioned above, the most striking characteristic of the area in the vicinity of the bond interface is a very considerable longitudinal grain deformation which appears to be strongest at the metal-to-metal boundary and dies out as one moves away from it. Large twins are often observed within the deformed grains, and molten areas are found in the center of the eddy-shaped structures situated beyond the crest of the waves. The large hydrostatic pressures and shear stresses occurring at the interface modify the mechanical and chemical properties of the bond zone. Increases in hardness in this area have been reported by various authors.396 The defects along the interface can also cause a local increase of the chemical reactivity and thus might be expected to boost the etching rate. However, the effects of this preferential etching cannot be observed by light microscopy due to its inherently limited resolution power. The same limitation precludes the observation of morphological features directly along the bond interface as well as the interface itself. Furthermore, no information can be gained by light-

High-purity dense tungsten coating is obtained by means of a modified de Boer-van Arkel iodide process using tungsten bromides. The all-glass reaction system is pumped, baked, and sealed (pinched-off) at about 10-7 mm Hg pressure. The bromides then formed in situ are decomposed, depositing tungsten on heated tungsten surfaces. Heating of the specimen is done inductively in a novel arrangement that avoids electrodes of glass-to-metal seals. The tungsten, deposited at specimen temperatures from 2000° to 2800°F and bulb (halide) temperatures of 225" to 725°F, was adherent and uniform, and ranged in thickness to 1/8-in. REFRACTORY metals are of interest at NASA for use in hypersonic aircraft, in rocket engines, and in other thrust devices where very high temperatures are encountered. Tungsten, with a melting point about 6100° F, is potentially very useful for some of these applications. Considerable research on tungsten and its alloys is currently being conducted at the NASA Lewis Research Center. In this tungsten research program, there is need for a method of depositing high-purity, nonporous tungsten coatirlgs. Metallurgical bonding of the coating both to itself and to the substrate is required. In addition, it is necessary to be able to deposit thin, uniform coatings on substrates of a variety of shapes and sizes for laboratory test purposes. A survey of the methods previously used for depositing tungsten coatings indicated that none would likely meet these requirements for high purity, good uniformity, and high density except thermal decomposition of the halides. The method for coating that was selected for investigation was the thermal decomposition of tungsten bromide. This is a variation of the van Arkel and de Boer iodide process established years ago and recently reviewed.1,2 This process is applicable to the transition metals in general. More recently, the application and techniques were extended with chlorine3 and fluorine,4 and included the coating of tungsten. This is believed to be the first report on the use of the bromide for tungsten coating. Bromine was chosen over the other halogens because it promised a lower temperature for tungsten

Zeolites were first recognized as a new group of minerals by Cronstedt with the discovery of stilbite in 1756. The word zeolite was coined from the two Greek words meaning "to boil" and "a stone" because of the loss of water when heated in the mineralogist's blowpipe (Breck, 1974). In 1845 it was discovered that certain soils lave the power of retaining ammonium salts Way, 1850). These were the first ion exchange experiments. Later it was discovered that it was the hydrated silicates in the soil that produced this phenomenon. Several years later a paper was published dealing with the action of dilute salt solutions on silicates which showed that this base-exchange principle, which we now call cation exchange, is reversible. The quantitative cation exchange behavior of zeolite minerals, such as chabazite, was studied. As a result any aluminosilicate which exhibited the property of ion exchange was referred to as a "zeolite," even today the term has been applied to clay minerals as well as synthetic organic ion exchange resins.

The revolution in equipment for blasthole drilling, ore loading, and ore hauling has been so rapid over the last ten years that it has generated an important new profit potential in the mining industry. With the new high-capacity machinery now available, it is possible for a mining enterprise to earn a profit from larger and lower grade orebodies than ever before despite the ever-increasing burden of rising costs. Just what such equipment can accomplish when coupled with improved mining practice has been demonstrated with startling success at the No. 1 mine of Minerva Oil Co. near Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Ill. The No. 1 is an underground operation which has been producing fluorspar and zinc ores and concentrates continuously since 1944. A few years ago, when the mine neared the familiar cross-roads where rising costs, increasing tonnages, and relatively static product prices converge, company officials decided to bolster the operation with new mobile equipment. They chose three machines which proved so effective that output at the No. 1 doubled between 1963 and 1965,while costs dropped by about 40% in the same period.

This paper reports the theoretical and experimental results of an analysis of ore pass drawdown as a problem in soil plasticity. The method of analysis developed appears to be a promising technique of investigating the mechanics of fragmented materials. A reconstructed plasticity theory brings experiment and theory into reasonable agreement, and hence may provide the foundation needed for rational ore pass design. The gravity-induced movement of broken rock through ore passes is an economical method of transporting fragmented materials through large vertical distances in underground mines, provided the ore pass is well designed. Unfortunately, the design procedures now followed do not very often result in ore passes that function properly. On the one hand, the huge accumulation of empirical data pertaining to the movement of materials in gravel bunkers, storage bins, deep grain silos and other structures that have features in common with ore passes remains uncorrelated. On the other hand, there is a dearth of experimental data substantiating theoretical models of material behavior. Consequently, reliable generalizations encompassing the broad spectrum of problems involved have not been forthcoming. AS an initial step towards improving the situation, a detailed case study of two-dimensional ore pass drawdown was made. The mechanics of the process were analyzed theoretically as a problem in soil plasticity and tested experimentally through observations of a laboratory ore pass model. THEORY Taylor1 defines a soil as a "mass commonly considered to consist of a network or skeleton of solid particles, enclosing voids of varying size." Broken rock in an ore pass is such a material. In plasticity theory this material is replaced by an idealized substance that deforms elastically up to some state of stress at which slip or yield occurs,2 For com-pressive states of stress, the Mohr-Coulomb criterion is a satisfactory yield condition. After the yield point is reached, the ideal soil deforms in accordance with the concept of plastic potential.4 Under plane strain conditions the governing equations separate into a system of stress equations and a system of velocity equations.' Only stress variables appear in the stress system. The velocity system, however, contains a stress variable. The two systems are, therefore, coupled. Both systems are hyperbolic, and each has two real, distinct families of characteristic curves that coincide according to the classical theory of ideal soil plasticity. The

In the routine examination of a wide variety of metal specimens it is sometimes necessary to have special methods of polishing in order to retain and reveal certain details in each specimen. Among such special cases is the retention of graphite in malleable and gray cast irons, the preservation of all types of nonmetallic inclusions in both hard and soft steels, obtaining a scratch-free surface with soft metals, and avoiding the usual relief effects with very hard specimens such as tool metals con-taining various carbide and nitride phases. It is the purpose of this paper to give an account of some of these special polishing methods in use at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. The polishing procedures outlined have been found to give uniform results. It is obvious that only general rules and the most important working details can be given here. Following these rules, the polisher can obtain satisfactory results if he possesses the necessary patience and has a sincere desire to give as nearly perfect a finish as possible to his work.

Both centrifugal and reciprocating-type pumps have been widely used in the transport of slurries. Although with some limitations, centrifugal pumps may be used, especially for short-haul systems, however, for the long pipelines the reciprocating pumps are better suited. A state-of-the-art review is presented in which a discussion of applications is made and some of the problems associated with meeting the proper design conditions for satisfactory service are discussed. Several developments underway give considerable promise of better pumps in the future, although the current level of development provides for an economical means to move slurries. The movement of liquids in pipelines necessarily occasions the use of pumps. The petroleum industry is familiar with the transport of solids through mud pumps and cementing and fracturing pumps where the movement of slurries is an everyday matter. In the drilling of an oil well, the circulating fluid utilized to remove drill cuttings is called drilling mud. This substance is usually a fairly sophisticated material designed to develop certain characteristics desirable in the drilling process. The cuttings are suspended in a moving column of this fluid and brought to the surface. The separation of the cuttings from the drilling fluids is accomplished by the use of shaker screens and settling pits; however, it is impractical to remove the cuttings completely and as a result they are pumped through the mud pumps back into the circulating stream. Over the years, mud pumps have been improved so that rather long life can be obtained from liquid end parts subject to the attritional effects of the abrasive-laden fluid. It is from this background that reciprocating-type slurry pumps have been developed. Centrifugal Pumps Centrifugal pumps have also been used to transport solids, where low heads are required, typically up to 200 ft or so, and for short hauls. The centrifugal pump is a hydrokinetic device wherein the increase in velocity of a fluid stream is converted to head, and to achieve high heads a large change in velocity is necessary. Abrasive laden fluids cause wear on impellers and casings as a result of erosion by the fluid and the suspended particles. Centrifugal pumps, therefore, can only be used where the internal velocity of flow is rela- tively low. The advantage of centrifugal pumps is their high capacity at relatively low capital cost and usually relatively small space requirement. One of the disadvantages of the centrifugal pump when used in slurry pipelining can be seen in its typical pressure-volume performance relationship, which tends to work against the application (see Fig. I). If an increase in pressure (head) is occasioned by flow restrictions in the pipeline, say by the dropping out of solids, a desirable characteristic of a slurry pump would be that it develop increased pressure to overcome the restriction. The centrifugal pump provides the increased pressure only at the expense of considerably reduced volume which then results in a lower flow velocity. With the reduced flow rate, adequate velocity to hold the material in suspension and keep it flowing in the line might not be achieved. If centrifugal pumps are considerd for the movement of solids in a long line, a series of pumps must be staged in order to provide the necessary motivating force. THERE are three distinct varieties of phosphate rock, in Tennessee, known commercially as: (a) the "brown" rock, which is the residual pro- duct of the weathering and natural concentration of certain phosphatic Ordovician limestones; (b) the "blue " rock, which is an unaltered phosphatic stratum of Mississippian or Devonian age; and (c) the "white" rock, which is the result of chemical replacement and deposition. Before 1894, South Carolina and Florida had supplied most of the phosphate of the United States, South Carolina leading until that date and Florida from then until the present time. In December, 1893, the blue phosphate of Tennessee was discovered almost simultaneously on Swan Creek, in Lewis County, by two independent parties-by one as the result of a careful and systematic search for a workable deposit of the long known kidney phosphate, and by the other through mistaking it for a "bloom" of coal. Leases were taken and, with further prospecting disclosing other deposits in the region, the development progressed as rapidly as 'could be expected without railroad transportation

The hydrogen reduction of Cr2O3 to chromium metal was found to be feasible at very low water-vapor concentrations, corresponding to dew points of -38° to -24°C, over a temperature range of 1130" to 1490°C. Hydrogen reduction under these conditions was predicted by the calculated equilibrium curves which also indicated that CrzOs is reduced directly to chromium without forming the intermediate oxide, CrO. This reduction path was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The percent reduction of Cr2O3 at each reaction temperature was constant with time, suggesting an inhibiting effect of water vapor. A small increase in the residual water-vapor concentration of a single temperature, 1490°C, strongly retarded the rate of reduction This effect was expressed by an empim'cal equation which indicated a direct relationship between "distance from equilibrium" and the rate of reduction. me effect of temperature over the range of 1130" to 1490°C was expressed in an Arvhenius plot of log rate vs reciprocal absolute temperature. From this curve the apparent enthalpy of activation was found to be 29,600 cal. Based on the hypothesis that the rate of reductiun is contvolled at the oxide-metal interface, an over-all rate equation consistent with the experimental data and the thery of absolute reaction rates was formulated. A simplification of this expression to an Arrhenius equation was justified by the overriding effect of temperature on the rate of reaction for the minimum water-vapor concentration range. MOST of the metals in Subgroup V1 of the periodic table can be prepared commercially by direct reduction of their oxides by hydrogen or carbon monoxide, at temperatures considerably below the melting points of both the metals and their oxides. Chromium is an exception, being generally reduced from its ore, Cr2O3 . FeO, by silicon in an electric arc furnace which operates above the melting point of the Fe-Cr alloy or above the melting point of chro- mium if a chromium oxide be the starting material. In reduction of chromium oxide by hydrogen, either reduction does not occur at all or the rate of reduction is extremely slow. Theoretical considerations based on the high, exothermic, free energy of formation of Cr2O3 compared to the oxides of the other Subgroup VI metals, molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium, would also suggest a slow rate of reaction and a high activation energy. Interest in the direct gaseous reduction of fine-powdered ores in fluidized beds was considered justification for examination of this reaction. In order to develop a basis for a continuing study of the commercial feasibility of the direct gaseous reduction of chromite, a study of the kinetics of the reduction of Cr2O3 with hydrogen was undertaken. To the authors' knowledge no accurate kinetic data for this reaction have been obtained. Neither has an activation energy been determined nor has an attempt been made to establish a mechanism of reaction. LITERATURE Maier10 compared the data of I. Y. Granaat,6 H. von Wartenburg and S. Aoyama, and G. Grube and M. Flad7 with that derived from calorimetric and ther-modynamic properties for the equilibria for the reduction of Cr2O3 with hydrogen. These results, plotted as the log of the equilibrium constant vs absolute temperature for the reduction of Cr2O3 and the intermediate oxide, CrO, to chromium, show agreement between the differently derived data. In both cases the equilibrium constants were extremely low. Maier showed that, over a temperature range of 1000° to 2000°K, Cr2O3 is more readily reducible than CrO. Granat assumed that CrO was preferentially formed from Cr2o3 above 1100°C. Grube and Flad's analysis of their reaction products in the 895" to 1000°C range indicated the coexistence of only Cr2O3 and chromium. The hydrogen reduction of the other Subgroup VI metals, molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium, shows that reduction of the higher oxide proceeds through all of the intermediate oxides before being reduced to the metal. Since evidence pointed to an anomaly in the reduction behavior of Cr2O3, the authors investigated the reduction path of Cr2Os.to chromium. This was done theoretically with more recently available free-energy data and experimentally by X-ray diffraction analysis. This work reinforces Maier's conclusion.

WHEN I was asked to speak on the subject of leaching, I did not realize that a complete summary of recent progress in leaching had been given by Stuart Croasdale. I shall try to give some other phases of the subject that were not touched by Mr. Croasdale. Not all metallurgists are in harmony as to their methods of treating metals. If they were it would probably mean lack of progress. They can be divided into two classes-the pyrometallurgists, using fire means, and the hydrometallurgists, or those using leaching methods. Conflict is always good for progress; we have it in politics, and in religion there are fundamentalists, and those who are not fundamentalists. As representing pyrometallurgy, may I hope not to be classed among the fundamentalists. The leaching of ores is not new. The leaching of ores for the recovery of metals, however, is quite new. The older leaching was simply to recover the salts. Agricola, back in 1555, I think it was, outlined a great many methods of leaching for the recovery of salts. An industry-wide demand for bigger and more efficient trucks, with their supposed economies of scale, is well established. Some trucks have been, and often are brought "off the shelf," with the manufacturer offering only certain minor options, much as in the private automobile industry. The market is well established; there is keen competition; in recent years there have been few significant changes, and few are expected. With large trucks (100-ton-capacity and over), however, the situation is different. Here, with an individual truck costing several hundred thousand dollars, there is an ever in- creasing trend to engineer a truck for a specific application. The body will be designed and sized for the material that the truck will carry; the engine and transmission will be geared to the haul profile, and tires will be designed to suit road conditions and work requirements. Early Truck Development Haulage trucks designed expressly for open-pit mine service were introduced during the 1930's. The first models to arrive on the scene hauled about 15 tons, and easily outperformed the modified highway trucks that had been used for mine haulage up to that time.

On October 26, 1967, the world's first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this $5 million installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction. The mine and concentrator are located approximately 30 miles from the town of Waratah in a rugged semi-mountainous terrain. The open pit mine will produce approximately 5 million long tons a year of crude ore, which is ground in autogenous mills, separated magnetically, thickened and prepared for the pipeline. The 53-mile pipeline transports the 2,250,000 tons of concentrate north to Port Latta. The Port Latta facilities include the receiving, storage and thickening equipment for the slurry as well as filtering, balling and pelletizing equipment to produce the 2,250,000 tons of high grade iron ore pellets. Five vertical shaft furnaces are used for pelletizing.
