FEB. 17-The past month found the average citizen backed off just a little more into his blind corner staring glassily at hydrogen bombs, unbalanced budgets, John L. Lewis, more inflation, a rising wave of strikes, the country's only active battleship on a mudbank, a famous scientist in gaol as a traitor, a favorite actress on a Roman holiday, and rising mountains of potatoes, butter and eggs begging for destruction. About the only bright spot has been industrial activity and employment, but even these are menaced by the coal shortage. Most industries have orders on hand or in prospect to warrant high operations for some time to come. The trend of the Reserve Board's production index is upward except as strikes may interfere. There has been heavy buying at the seasonal merchandise shows, particularly in furniture and house-hold goods. The demand for goods of this kind illustrates greater confidence in the Spring outlook than was generally felt a year ago. Further, the demand also reflects improved market positions due to curtailment of output and reduction of inventories in 1949 and sustained consumer buying power. It demonstrates the strong support that is given directly to many businesses, and indirectly to all, by the phenomenal construction activity that is now under way. The Commerce Department places the number of new dwelling units started in 1949 at the new all-time high of 1,019,000.

READERS of a technical paper, or the audience if the paper is presented orally, judge the paper on several counts. The September 1940 issue of MINING AND METALLURGY contained an excellent short article by S. Marion Tucker en- titled "Are You Going to Present a Paper," which considered the general subject of presentation. In it Dr. Tucker referred to the large number of poorly prepared and badly delivered papers that are presented annually before the large number of technical and other societies that meet regularly, and he stressed the point that good delivery, length of paper, content, and composition are of great importance. All of Dr. Tucker's points were well taken; however, good illustrations are equally important in explaining certain phases of some papers.

The effects of alloy composition, deformation temperature, heal treatment, ad inlerstilial contamination on the occurrence of deformation twins were studied. The twinning transition temperature varied with composition and was a maximuni of 140°C for the 40 pcl V composition. Tire remperature range of the transition was very narrow. Alloys of 20 to 70 pet V could he cold-rolled and exhibited profuse twinning. The alloys which did not twin at room temperature (10, 80, and 90 pel V) could plot be cold-rolled. Oxygen additions systematically lowered the transition temperatures for all vanadium contents. The transition temperature for a 30 pet V alloy increased with annealing temperature, apparently due to changes in dislocation density and configuration. Twinning did not nucleate fracture in any specimen in the 20 to 60 pet V composition range. THERE is great current interest in the refractory metals and alloys as structural materials. An important factor in considering the ductile-brittle behavior of such materials is the role of mechanical twinning as a deformation mechanism. Mechanical twins have been observed after deformation at low temperatures or at high loading rates in the pure metals iron,1 vanadium,2,3 columbium,4,5 tantalum,6 Chromium,7 molybdenum,8 and tungsten.9 Binary alloys in which mechanical twins have been observed include: iron with silicon,10 phosphorous," or aluminum;12 and chromium, molybdenum, or tungsten with rhenium.13-17 The increase in low-temperature ductility obtained by alloying the Group VI-A elements with rhenium is very important with regard to fabricability, and there has been considerable effort to understand the so-called '(rhenium effect". Factors suggested to explain this effect include:'' 1) increase in solubility of interstitial impurities with alloying (electronic effect): 2) changes in the nature of grain boundary phases; 3) changes in interfacial energies of grain boundaries and stacking faults: and 4) promotion of twinning. Although an outstanding characteristic of these alloys is the profuse twinning that accompanies low-temperature deformation, most studies of the rhenium effect have been concerned with the other factors. During recent studies of refractory-metal alloys, it was noted that solid solutions of columbium and vanadium exhibited high hardness and strength at room temperature and elevated temperature and, surprisingly, also showed considerable ductility at room temperature and below. These alloys deformed by twinning at room temperature when subjected to slow loading rates. It appeared that the low-temperature ductility resulted at least in part from the relaxation of stresses by twinning in a system where slip is difficult. The following discussion occurred on the afternoon of Sept,. 22, 1930, as part of the fall meeting of the Iron and Steel Division at Chicago. About seventy-five men attended this session. C. B. Murray opened the meeting, as follows: C. B. Murray, Cleveland, Ohio.—It is very encouraging to see so many here this afternoon to discuss this important matter of beneficiation. The producers of ore, I am sure, are anxious to furnish the grade of ore that the consumer wants. The consumer sometimes wants that which cannot be economically produced and often the producer cannot understand why the consumer wants certain things. It was to bring together these two interested parties that this meeting was proposed. I was appointed the chairman of the meeting, chiefly because I happened to be the chairman of the Iron Ore Committee of the Institute. I know a little about iron ore but have not perhaps kept up with the times in blast-furnace practice. I am asking Mr. Sweetser, who is well informed from both sides, to take over the meeting and carry on the discussion. R. H. Sweetser, Columbus, Ohio.—We want to have a free discussion between the iron-ore men and the blast-furnace men as to just what we are trying to reach in the beneficiation of iron ores. Many of those present have had a great deal of experience. There are men here from the ranges who have been passing through the experimental stage of beneficiation of iron ores, and there are some who have already gone on to commercial production. We have reached the point where the beneficiation of iron ore is important to the whole iron and steel industry. The connection between iron-ore beneficiation and the cleaning of coal is so close that I think we can profit by working very close to the coal people. Some Aspects of the Iron-ore Situation W. G. Seven mines with important production records in the Coeur d'Alene lie adjacent to the Gem stocks —the Frisco (Gem), Hercules, Interstate, Rex (Sixteen to One), Success (Granite), Sunset, and Tamarack. Old records are incomplete, but available data given in Table I show these mines have produced 10.550,721 tons of ore containing more than 50 million oz of silver, more than 1.5 billion lb of lead, and about 1 billion lb of zinc (approximately 1.25 million tons of lead and zinc combined). Average ore grade is 4.8 oz of silver per ton, 7.2 pct Pb, and 4.6 pct Zn. This impressive production represents about 12 pct of the District's yield. At present metal prices, with modern beneficiation, the gross value would be more than $400 million. THE GEM STOCKS The Gem stocks, considered to be outliers of the Idaho batholith of Late Cretaceous age, are located in the northern half of the Mullan quadrangle, and extend from the town of Gem, Idaho, along a strike of N30°E for a distance of approximately five miles. They occur as two major masses of monzonitic rocks commonly referred to as the North stock, which covers an area of 1.1 sq miles, and the South stock, which covers 2.6 sq miles. The areal pattern is roughly club-shaped, the North stock representing the handle and the South stock the head of the club. Two and a half miles west and five miles northeast are two groups of smaller stocks, isolated from the main masses but of the same general rock type. This discussion is limited for the most part to the North and South stocks. At the north end, where the intrusion is about 3200 ft wide, the walls are about parallel and dip very steeply west. At the south end, where the mass is about 7000 ft wide at surface, the walls dip away from each other at moderately steep angles. An aeromagnetic survey' detects and outlines with surprising accuracy the two main stocks. as illustrated on the magnetic contour map (Fig. 2). Of particular interest is the location and shape of the magnetic anomaly representing the South stock. The anomaly is centered over the south end of the outcrop, and a westerly extension joins it with a smaller anomaly over the Dago Peak stocks. The latter anomaly, likewise, is located over the south end of the isolated stocks. This pattern suggests the intrusion has greater extent at depth to the south and west. Though correlation between the Dago Peak stocks and the larger masses is suggested, the controversial aspects of the Dobson Pass fault, which separates the two areas, casts doubt on a correlation. Topographically the monzonite stocks are ignored by the drainage pattern indicating these rocks, and the invaded rocks of the Lower Belt Series react similarly to erosion. The drainage patterns of Nine Mile and Canyon creeks cut indiscriminately across the monzonite-Belt contact, resulting in both valleys and ridges in the southern end of the intrusion. Nine Mile Creek traverses diagonally the entire five-mile length of the stocks. The monzonite rocks of the intrusion are referred to locally as granite, but granite is rare and the rocks comprise a wide variety of types. Their characteristics, described in detail by F. L. Ransome and F. C. Calkins,' are summarized by P. J. Shenon.' The principal rock type is coarse-grained, light gray, porphoritic monzonite containing black crystals of hornblende. Plain carbon steels with 0.48 and 0.95 pct C were quenched and tempered at 705°C to produce carbide dispersions with spacings on the order of 1 p. The morphology of the structure consisted of a carbide-dislocation network. The strengthening due to the dispersion was found to vary linearly with M-½ where M is the mean free-ferrite path determined by the entire network. No preyield microstrain preceded the upper yield point. After prestraining, the lowest stress at which dislocation movement could be detected was 104 psi; this frictional stress was independent of the dispersion and prestrains up to 6.5 pct. The Cottrell-Petch equation for grain-size strengthening was used to discuss the dispersion strengthening in this investigation. The results support an impurity mechanism for the upper yield point rather than one based on the Johns ton- Gilman theory. IT was pointed out by Gensamerl that the mean free path in the matrix is the important variable which controls the degree of dispersion strengthening. Gensamer's data on steels showed a linear relationship between the yield point and the logarithm of the mean free-ferrite path. The first theory was by Orowan,2 who suggested the mechanism of dislocations bowing between particles, with the resulting relationship that where a is the yield point, P is the distance between particles, and G is the shear modulus. The Orowan equation applies to that range of dispersion where P is large compared to the particle size and the particles are not coherent, so that the matrix is essentially free of internal stresses. As was pointed out by Orowan, there are different degrees of dispersion which, in turn, will influence the strength-controlling mechanism. However, in this investigation, we wish to confine ourselves to the region of coarse dispersion, where the Orowan mechanism should, intuitively, be applicable. It was soon evident that the data, which existed at about the time that the Orowan theory was proposed, did not agree with the Orowan equation in that the actual strengthening was always greater than the theoretical predictions. Thus, Fisher, Hart, and pry3 modified the Orowan theory by suggesting that the Orowan process took place in the microstrain region preceding macroscopic yielding and the subsequent, rapid work hardening in the form of residual dislocation loops around the particles largely determined the observed macroscopic yield point. The F-H-P theory stated that the increment of strengthening due to the work-hardening mechanism was proportional to f3/2 where f is the volume fraction of the precipitate. F-H-P used data by Shaw, Shepard, Starr, and Dorn4 on A1 3-5 pct Cu to support their theory. Roberts, Carruthers, and Averbach5 were the first to make a microstrain study of dispersion strengthening, and they found that for steel the Gensamer relationship was obeyed. Hayman and Nutting6 suggested that in the case of tempered steel 1) the ferrite grain boundary was the primary obstacle and 2) the carbide particles simply formed part of the grain boundary obstacles. They found that the strength varied as G"" where G is the ferrite grain size. Turkalo and LOW' determined the structure of quenched and tempered plain carbon steel using a replica technique; they concluded that the carbide particles did not necessarily lie in the ferrite grain boundaries. When they defined the mean free-ferrite path as being determined by both particles and the ferrite path boundaries, their data obeyed the Gensamer relationship. Meiklejohn and skoda8 showed that the strengthening from iron particles in mercury was a function of the particle size and the distance between particles. Dew-Hughes9 explained the Meiklejohn and Skoda results by the following theory: 1) grown-in dislocations which surrounded the particles were produced by the thermal stresses during the time the material was cooled to the testing temperature, and 2) the observed strengthening was associated with the cutting of the grown-in dislocations by the glide dislocations. Ansell and Lenel10 proposed a theory in which the glide dislocations pile-up or surround the particle until the number of dislocations in the pile-up is sufficient to yield or fracture the particle. The resulting theory says that the yield point varies as p-1/2, where P is the distance between particles. The Ansell-Lenel theory is almost identical to the

THE work of a consulting engineer or manager, when controlling mining-operations, requires that he have all the information concerning the mine in as concise a form as possible, and as the ore-reserves and their depletion and enlargement are the vital points to be studied, it is well to have them kept up to date and in some convenient form. The present paper describes a method adopted by me, which shows in a very clear manner the ore-reserves in a mine. The case illustrated is that of a vein near enough to the vertical for the vertical elevation of the mine to be the main working-map. A flat ore-body would be represented on a similar plat, but instead of the horizontal thickness of the vein being shown in the circles, the vertical thickness would be inserted. Fig. 1 represents an ideal longitudinal elevation of a mine, plotted in the ordinary way, using 100-ft. blocks and section-lines. In a mine where the block-numbers are posted by the engineer underground, the system of keeping the ore-tonnages extracted from the different blocks is easily maintained, and the actual tonnages of ore extracted can be kept so that the surveyor can have a check on his estimate from time to time. The ore-reserve sheet, Fig. 2, should be the same size as the map it is to accompany. Each square is used for the description of the ore-reserve in the block it corresponds to on the elevation. Where the section-lines cross the levels a circle is drawn, in which are written the widths of ore at that point, these widths being used in the calculations of each block cornering in the circle. It has been found convenient to show the figures in black in the lower half of the circle when the actual widths of ore are known, and when it is necessary to make up the figures of probable ore, as at the time of making

Technical papers for the Metals Session were sponsored by the San Francisco Section, whereas the program for the Industrial Minerals Session was arranged by the Southern California Section. Walter W. Bradley, Chairman of the San Francisco Section, opened the General and Metals Session, introducing President Buehler, who gave a hearty welcome to those present. Clyde M. Eye, of the. Benguet Consolidated Mining Co., presented the first paper, entitled "The Economic and Strategic Value of Philippine Metals to the United States." THE matter that I have on my mind this evening is engineering's need of an open forum. Our fathers of three centuries ago were pro-testanta for freedom of speech and thought in matters religious; later, our fathers were revolutionists for freedom of speech in matters political; until today freedom of speech has become so universal throughout the land that even in the sanctuary of our homes, at times, we have to turn off the loud-speaker. Talk is not always a condition of progress, but light is everywhere necessary to growth, whether the growing thing is a blade of grass, a baby chick, or a young idea, and we must regret anything that tends to shut out the light from the operations of business and industry. Of course, I realize there is little that is novel in what I am saying. Indeed, I have found that Dr. James Douglas-a name we love to honor in our Institute-as long ago as 1907, gave an address at the Toronto meeting that any of us would be proud to be author of twenty-one years after. Dr. Douglas at that time spoke on secrecy in the arts and the text then taken by this leader in metallurgical technique and in the constructive management of big business was "the dangerous temptation to adopt secretive methods by very large corporations." In both thought and language Dr. Douglas was direct and vigorous and he needs no internreter. He advocated the wide open door for ideas on two counts: advancement of technical knowledge and education of public opinion. A few sentences will serve not only to prove the vision of James Douglas, but also, I hope, tempt you to hunt up his address in the Institute's TRANSACTIONS, and thus get his whole thought first hand.

STUDIES of ground movement and subsidence resulting from mining operations cover a broad field. It is also a very important consideration and one that eventually affects nearly every mining operation of any extent. The damage to surface buildings, removal of mine surface plants and replacements of main hoisting shafts must reach an astounding expenditure were these cost figures available over a period of years. Were the subject one of mathematical formula and dependent only on the angle of draw of the walls or country rocks, the problem would be relatively simple. Consideration must be given to depth and extent of workings; structural conditions of the orebodies and enclosing country rock; physical properties of these same rocks, including schistosity, bedding, jointing, slips, dikes, faults, and other structural weaknesses. The method of mining, extent of openings, supporting pillars, and amount of moisture or water underground are other pertinent factors. With such a large number of variable factors, it is apparent that the subject of subsidence is one that must be based largely on experience and results at other mines where conditions are somewhat comparable. In presenting this paper, it is the intent to describe the progressive results of past ground movements at the United Verde, to bring out physical conditions largely responsible for this movement, but to refrain from theorizing on the ultimate extent of subsidence resulting from future mining operations.

A survey of the world's sources and markets for natural graphite and some predictions of future trends are presented here. The authors feel that there is no indication of major changes in sources of graphite over the next few years, but it is possible that the importance of domestic graphites as opposed to foreign carbons may increase in the more distant future. U.S. consumption of natural graphite, which has been in general decline for the past six years, and will probably continue downhill with the virtual disappearance of some markets. However, other markets such as bearings, brake linings and crucibles will probably grow. Natural graphite is the name given to all the naturally occurring mineral forms of carbon that crystallize in the hexagonal system. Natural graphite~ are generally divided into three broad classifications that are based on physical rather than chemical differences — crystalline flake, Ceylon amorphous and other amorphous. Crystalline flake graphites occur as thousands of small individual flakes disseminated throughout the ore and closely resemble shiny black fish scales. Ceylon amorphous graphite is mined from narrow veins of almost pure mineral. It is produced in lump form and often has a coarse platy or needlelike structure. Other amorphous graphites include all those that are extremely fine-grained and have a crystalline structure that is not visible under normal circumstances. In the primary raw material markets, the graphite's country of origin is also important. Crystalline flake graphites may, for example, be of the Alabaman, Bavarian or Madagascan types; Ceylon amorphous graphite may have originated in Montana or Ceylon; and other amorphous graphites may come from Mexico, Hong Kong or Korea. The distinctions between the graphites from each particular locality are small yet important, for the country of origin will signify certain inherent physical characteristics and will often give an idea of the amount of graphitic carbon contained in the shipment in question. .In certain instances, however, even this is not enough, since the actual mine at which the graphite is produced may have to be known before its true commercial value can be ascertained. Thus, the Madagascar flake graphite shipped from the Sahalambo mines of the Societe des Graphites de la Sahanavo is a thick flake which is known to be especially suited for use in crucibles, while the dull black earthy amorphous material formerly mined at Cranston, R.I., was ideal for stove polish. Synthetic, artificial, electric furnace and manufactured are terms used to describe graphites made from coke. These graphites will be considered in this paper only to the extent that they enter competition with natural graphite. DOMESTIC SOURCES OF NATURAL GRAPHITES Natural graphites have been produced from mines in Alabama, Alaska, California, Georgia, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and other states. The exception is the crystalline minerals resembling Ceylon graphite that have come from Montana and the amorphous meta-anthracites from Rhode Island. All the products mined have been flake graphite. In 1960, production was reported only in Texas and Pennsylvania. The Alabama graphite deposits of flake in quartz-mica schists are found southeast of Birmingham in a narrow belt that extends for about 60 miles southwest from Delta in Randolph County to Verbena in Chilton County. Since the long-run prospects for Alabama graphites appear to be fairly bright, especially if regular production of high quality output becomes possible, regional ore reserves of all kinds, including indicated and inferred, are estimated to be of the order of 25 million tons. Of this amount, 14 million tons are of the weathered variety. Alabama graphites are favored by their relative ease of mining, and by the fact that special methods of milling have been developed at the larger properties. In addition, the steady rise in ocean freight rates for Madagascar graphites, the tendency among crucible manufacturers to use flakes of a smaller size, and the possibility of producing other salable byproducts in addition to the graphite are favorable to Alabama producers. In 1900, Elmore found that if an acidulated pulp was stirred up with an oil which was relatively insoluble in and lighter than water, and the mixture was allowed to stratify, much of the sulfide would be found hanging to the lower surface of the floating body of oil and could be skimmed off or overflowed with it. The action of the flotation agent here is twofold, first to select the sulfide from the gangue—what today is called collection—and second, to buoy the collected sulfide away from the gangue. The action in collecting is illustrated by Fig. 1: which contrasts the behavior of drops of oil brought, under water, to the surfaces of gangue and sulfide particles, respectively. The oil displaces water from the surface of the sulfide; the water displaces oil from the gangue surface. If, instead of considering the solid particles the fixed parts of the system of oil, water and solids. we consider the oil and water fixed and the solids presented to the surface of contact, the condition will be as shown in Fig. 2; the sulfide tends to be drawn into the interface and the gangue to be excluded. The sulfide particles are held in the oil-water surface by the tension of this surface. The buoyant effect is supplied by the oil droplets in bringing the sulfides to the water surface, but not in holding them there. Gas as Buoyant Medium of Flotation In 1906 Sulman. Picard and Ballot discovered a practical and substantially fool-proof method of doing what Everson, in 1886, and Fro-nlcnt. DeBavay Bessel and Elmore had been doing in the intervening years, viz.: using gas in place of oil as the buoyant medium for flotation, but retaining oil as the agent. To all of these inventors "oil," with no qualification as to its kind and no true understanding of its function, was the important thing. Hut they placed on the oil an additional burden viz.: froth-making, and it soon became apparent that not all oils were suitable for the dual purpose. As a matter of fact, it is probable that each of these inventors knew only one suitable oil at the time he wrote his patent, but used the generic term in the patent with the usual idea

WHEN we consider the efforts made in Europe to promote the physical and moral well-being of the working classes, the question is suggested whether in this country, where, theoretically, every man is peculiarly the arbiter of his own destiny, we may not be too prone to expect every man to take care of himself, and neglect to make those provisions for the welfare of the employed, demanded alike by enlightened economy and humanity. In the older countries, where the disproportion between capital and labor is greater, and the working classes are more dependent, their welfare largely occupies the attention of employers. The subject is involved in the problem of the just relations of capital and labor, and we are rapidly approaching the time, if we have not already reached it, when a generous paternal interest in the welfare of the employed should be more generally manifested. It is a subject which is of special importance to mine-owners and engineers in this country, especially to those located in the coal regions. My own attention has been particularly directed to it by a visit made to the Hassard collieries, a few miles from Liege, Belgium, under the direction of M. Andrimont. This celebrated engineer has established a comfortable home for the miners near the mouth of the shaft of the mine. It has been highly successful and beneficent in its results, and may to a great degree be regarded as a, model for such undertakings. It is known as "Hotel Louise," this being the name of Madame d'Andrimont, who laid the corner-stone of the building April 4th, 1871. The structure is of brick, upon three sides of a square, and

THE application of aerial photographs to all phases of geologic mapping is set forth, indicating the advantages to be gained in different types of country and under varying climatic conditions. Methods of field and office procedure are given from a geological point of view, as well as suggestions regarding the best methods of aerial mapping for different uses and under varying field conditions, including the study of submarine geology. Aerial photographs with accompanying geologic maps are shown to illustrate the appearance from the air of different geologic features under varying climatic and topographic conditions.

STRIKING new developments in the field of industrial minerals include the employment of lime, salt, coal, and air for the manufacture of stockings, and the substitution of paper for granite and marble in making tombstones. Certain minerals that have heretofore been regarded as valueless except as museum or laboratory specimens, are now being applied commercially. Serpentine, in forms neither fibrous nor ornamental, massive topaz, pinite, and zoisite are examples. For certain other minerals, notably pyrophyllite, bentonite, vermiculite, and sulphur, extension of established uses into new fields has occurred. Substitution takes a toll in many industries, but producers of industrial minerals as a class have gained more than they have lost in recent years. Encouraging progress has been made in developing at long last a suitable substitute for certain of the uses of mica, the only industrial mineral on the strategic list of commodities established by the War. and Navy Munitions Board. NORWAY'S metallurgical development, which has extended over many centuries, is intimately associated with that country's unique topography and climatic conditions. It is a rugged mountainous country, with a most irregular shore line, bordered by thousands of islands forming a natural protection for shipping. There are an endless number of lakes, and innumerable rivers and waterfalls, many fed by glaciers and melting snow. Rainfall is abundant. The Wind River Formation of Eocene age is the host rock for large high-grade uranium deposits in the Shirley Basin. The major deposits are in a northwest-trending belt of sandstones that were deposited in stream channels and that were lithologically favorable for uranium accumulation. Paleotopography influenced the character and position of the belt. The major deposits within the belt are at, or near, the margins of large tongues of altered sandstone formed in the most transmissive parts of thick sandstone beds. At least two tongues of altered sandstone are present in the belt, one of which is 5 miles long, 3 miles wide, and 70 feet thick; the other tongue is somewhat smaller. Ore bodies consist of a few hundred tons to several hundred thousand tons of material containing from 0.10 to about 2.00 per cent U3O8. The ore mineral is uraninite associated with pyrite, marcasite, hematite, and calcite. Deposition is believed to have taken place when neutral to slightly alkaline, oxidizing, uranium-bearing ground water, on entering the basin, encountered a reducing environment. The reductant may have been H2S of biogenic origin. Geology played an important role in discovery, exploration, and development of ore in the Shirley Basin.

THAT Illinois is an important mineral producing state is well known. A value of over $237,000,000 for the mineral products in 1926 indicates the magnitude of the industries. Coal mining is the largest mineral industry, and the value of its product was about 63 per cent of the total mineral production of the state. Oil and gas constituted about 8 per cent and the non-metallic minerals about 29 per cent. This 29 per cent represents the production of a varied group of mineral industries of wide geographic distribution through the state.
