The Ministere de l'Énergie et des Ressources du Québec, under the Canada-Quebec Mineral Development Agreement, and the private sector have put an emphasis on exploration, mapping and evaluation programs in the Grenville Province for minerals, particularly since 1983. These programs have led to the discovery and the development of deposits such as architectural granite, graphite and dolomite, and have also led to inventories of occurrences and prospects of wollastonite, silica, calcite, dolomite, alumina silicates and rare earths. The deposits discovered lately are presently being quarried or will be in the near future. The most promising occurrences and prospects have been claimed."

Chromite has been produced commercially for slightly more than a century. Developed, at one time, chiefly as a chemical pigment raw material, it has subsequently found extensive application in other chemical industries - as a refractory material for furnace linings and as the sole source of the metal chromium. For some years prior to 1914, its use as a refractory predominated; but post-war development in alloy steels, principally stainless steels, enhanced the metallurgical demand in the form of ferrochrome with a consequent increase in the demand for chromite. More recently direct reduction of chromite in alloy-steel manufacture has been applied to a limited extent. Alloy steels containing varying amounts of chromium, with or without other alloying elements, now find extensive use in a ride variety of ways - in structural material, machines, industrial equipment transportation by land, sea, and air, sanitary equipment, food preservation, and a multitude of other uses. A recent increase in energy demand has resulted in the rapid growth of coal consumption in the People?s Republic of China (PRC), which is the largest coal producer and consumer in the world. Reportedly, the safety issues in Chinese coal mines have been improving, but the number of fatalities and serious injuries continues to be alarmingly high. The number of fatalities from catastrophic accidents have prompted researchers to review the Chinese mine safety situation and to look for potential solutions. Marshall Miller & Associates, Inc. (MM&A), along with various collaborators, has investigated these issues as part of its work on various projects in the PRC and has discussed the concerns with relevant Chinese officials. Preliminary investigations by MM&A of coal mine accidents during 2001?2006 in the PRC indicate that 65%-78% of the total fatalities were the result of gas explosions and roof falls in underground mines. Even though the drainage of methane has been practiced for decades, current practices do not always produce satisfactory results due to technical constraints and equipment limitations. Based on prior experience of in-seam degasification at the Daning Coal Mine located in Shanxi province, MM&A believes that in-seam directional drilling technology can be a viable solution to degas the low-permeability Chinese coal deposits. This paper 1) reviews current Chinese coal mine safety conditions, 2) analyzes the advantages/disadvantages of current degasification practices in China, and 3) presents the pre-mining degasification practices for the longwall panel at the Daning Coal Mine.

"The efficiency by which an applied load is transmitted from the matrix to reinforcing fibers in a composite depends on the fiber/matrix adhesion strength. This is determined as the interfacial shear strength, IFSS, which may be measured by means of pullout tests that measure the force needed to pull a single fiber out of a block of material simulating the composite matrix. Different techniques are used to perform pullout tests. The objective of this work was to characterize the IFSS of sisal fibers embedded in epoxy matrix through the determination of the critical length pullout curves. As the main results, a relatively small critical length was found for the sisal fiber/epoxy pullout specimens, corresponding to a weaker IFSS. This was compared to other results applying different pullout techniques. Scanning electron microscopy observation identified the mechanism responsible for the weak sisal fiber adhesion to the epoxy matrix.IntroductionSynthetic fiber reinforced composites is today one of the most successful class of materials with increasing industrial applications from house appliances to large airplanes like the modem Airbus 380. However, environmental issues are revealing serious drawbacks related to the fabrication, use and post-use discard of these composites. For instance, the thermoset polymer composite reinforced with E-glass fiber, known as ""fiberglass"" has an energy-intensive fabrication associated with a surplus emission of C02, which is responsible for global warming [1]. Moreover, the glass fiber is considered toxic and also causes long term pollution after being discarded."

The Fifth International Heavy Minerals Conference (HMC) was held Oct. 16-19, 2005, at the Marriott Sawgrass Resort in Ponte Vedra, FL. With SME as sponsor, the 2005 conference marked the first time that the HMC was held in North America. The conference is held every two years and provides an important forum for professionals in the heavy minerals and related industries to meet and discuss issues related to heavy mineral exploration, mining, processing and marketing. Previous locations included Australia and South Africa. The conference consisted of technical presentations, field trips to heavy mineral operations, a trade show and social activities. It was appropriate that Ponte Vedra was selected as the location for the conference. Ponte Vedra, located on the Atlantic Coast 17 km (10 miles) southeast of Jacksonville, FL, is the birthplace of heavy minerals mining in North America. Ponte Vedra beaches were mined from 1916 to 1929 in what was then called Mineral City. Though Ponte Vedra is now a golf and beach resort, there are still four heavy mineral mines operating within an hour’s drive. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site.

Typical of southwestern Wyoming are coal structures that dip from 4 degrees to 17 degrees. Those at the Reliance and Winton mines of the Union Pacific Coal Company average 9 1/2 degrees and 15 degrees, respectively, and dip almost directly to the west. By using a hoist for main haulage. a method of mining has been developed whereby four places are driven on the pitch of the seam. Slightly upgrade from the strike at intervals of 300 feet, a two-entry system is driven to the north and to the south. In both fields, which are non-gassy, an exhaust system of ventilation is used. Slope, manway, and lower or haulage entries are placed on the intake. Two air-courses and upper or breaking entries are placed on the return. A retreat system of mining is used exclusively. From the opening of its first coal mine, in the year 1868, until 1923, when the Joy Loader was introduced into the Union Pacific Coal Company's operations, slopes, aircourses and manways were driven by hand. Development work was conducted on the night shift or off shift, and the main hoist was used for haulage. The slope was driven down the pitch with crosscuts turned at intervals of 75 feet and entries at 230 feet. Connections to the workings above were made by driving up the pitch 75 feet. Mule haulage was used to furnish cars to the hand loaders driving planes up the pitch. A sheave was placed at the upper end of the plane with a 1 1/4¬ inch hemp rope doubling around it and having one end attached to the car and the other to the mule. The mule, pulling downhill, raised to the working face a small wooden car of one-ton capacity.

This paper presents a case history of an engineered, monitored, and tested program that provided an effective and satisfactory basis for the completion of pile foundations for Twin Dolphins 1 at La Peninsula Condominiums located in the Isles of Capri in southwest Florida, U.S.A. An 8-story building (withl-story parking underneath) along with recreational facilities (such as a swimming pool and tennis courts) had been planned for final construction. Following an evaluation of various foundation alternatives, a precast prestressed concrete (PPC) pile-supported system was selected. The building foundations were designed for pile capacities of 445kN (50 tons) and 890kN (100 tons) in compression and 133kN (15 tons) in uplift. A test pile program was performed to provide site-specific pile driving data, verify design assumptions, determine production pile lengths, and evaluate pile driving criteria. A total of 24, 356 mm (14-in.) square, 19.8 m (65 ft) PPC concrete piles were driven and dynamically load tested utilizing a Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) within the building limits. Dynamic monitoring during probe pile installation and restriking was performed to estimate the ultimate capacity of the piles and to evaluate driving stresses during installation. CAPWAP analyses were preformed on PDA data to better estimate pile capacity, resistance distribution, and predict pile freeze (increase in pile resistance with time) and thus optimized the production pile lengths. Upon completion of probe pile installation, 12 of the probe piles were tested using the Pile Echo Tester (PET) function of the Pile Integrity Sonic Analyzer (PISA). PET testing was performed to evaluate the integrity of piles which had exhibited high driving stresses during PDA testing. Information gathered during the probe pile driving program was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 539 PPC piles (including 24 probe piles) within the building limits at the project site to depths ranging from 9.1 to 19.8 m (30 to 65 ft) below the existing ground elevation as part of the foundation support system. Prior to installation of probe or production piles, a termination criterion was established using 1-dimensional wave equation analyses in addition to the design pile embedment requirement. The predicted pile capacities compared very well with the capacities from the CAPWAP analysis for probe piles. Use of geotechnical instrumentation and PDA assisted technology enabled each foundation support element to be constructed to its optimum capacity and at optimum cost. Furthermore, by using PDA the consultant was able to quantify a difficult to measure geotechnical phenomenon termed "pile freeze" which eliminated costly overdriving and unnecessary splicing of piles.

Drilling activity increased in Illinois in 1935. There were 34 com-pletions as compared with 26 in 1934 and 18 wells were drilling at the end of 1935. Some large blocks of acreage were leased in Marion and Clay counties near the central part of the Illinois structural basin. Production of oil in the state totaled 4,305,000 bbl., a decrease of 4 per cent from that of 1934 There was some curtailment of production in the early part of 1935 but none after April 30 as shown in the following table. This report presents the results of six STATNAMIC loading tests that were carried out on four different pile types at the CALTRANS 280 Test Site (Bridge No. 34-46) in conjunction with the Tension Pile Test Program. The STATNAMIC testing was performed by Berminghammer Corporation at the request of the California Department of Transportation, Office of Geotechnical Engineering. Others performed the static tension (uplift) and compression loading tests which werecarried out on the piles tested using the STATNAMIC method. A summary of the STATNAMIC test results is presented and discussed, and the appropriate results are compared with the static test results

Oregon Resources Corporation (ORC), an industrial minerals mining company, is currently engaged in the development of a new process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be mined efficiently and economically, creating an additional domestic source for chromite, garnet, and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America. Metallurgical study of the placer material was grouped into four distinct samples based on marine terrace deposition, geological facies, and mineralogy. Because the metallurgical samples represented the extremes likely to be encountered in all future Oregon paleo-beach placer ores, the process design is highly dynamic and will successfully adjust to meet the production needs. Water availability at the mining area is seasonal and will not support a typical placer operation?s water requirement needs for heavy mineral concentration. For this reason, ORC has developed a plan to construct the ore processing facilities near Coos Bay, where a municipal source of water is available. Raw ore will be transported from the mining sites approximately twenty miles one way to the processing facility with return loads hauling tailings back to the active pit. The need to haul dry tailings, return dry material to the pit for reclamation, and limit the amount of water being purchased from the municipality has driven the design of a unique water reclamation system. BACKGROUND Location and Access Economic concentrations of ?black sand? or heavy mineral (minerals with specific gravity greater than 2.85) have been recognized and studied in marine placers from Coos Bay to the mouth of the Rogue River, a distance of approximately 75 miles along the southern Oregon coast (Hornor, 1918; Griggs, 1945)(Figure 1). ORC will begin mining existing reserves approximately 20 miles south of Coos Bay in a region known locally as Seven Devils. Ore will be trucked north to the processing site near Coos Bay via use of existing county and state roads, including U.S. 101. The available facilities at the processing site include highway, rail, municipal water and electricity, natural gas, and a deep water port. At the time of this writing, the rail line had been abandoned, but was being pursued by the International Port of Coos Bay. It is anticipated that this will be serviceable at some time in the future. History The southern Oregon marine placers have garnered the interests of miners since 1852, when present day beaches were exploited for gold. The beach deposits were small and irregular in nature and were easily washed away by the major storms the coast endures during the winter months (Hornor, 1918). [ ] In the 1920?s, deposits at the beach were followed upstream to their paleo-beach terrace origins (Pardee, 1934). These terrace placers were mined, but with little success, as the cost of mining and processing was greater than at the present day beach deposits. The greatest effort to understand and delineate the paleo-beach terrace placers came during World War II. As the need for a domestic source of steel hardening chromite was evident, the heavy mineral bearing placers of southwestern Oregon provided just that. The U.S. Geological Survey, under guidance from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, began exploration drilling of the paleo-beach terraces in 1940 (Griggs, 1945). This work was part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits and would ultimately supply much needed chromite for the war efforts. More than 50,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and probably about the same quantity of anthracite are cleaned annually in the United States by wet methods. The water, fine coal, and impurities from the water used for washing ordinarily are recovered by moans of various forms of settling tanks. Settling and clarification may be hastened markedly, thereby greatly increasing the capacity of clarification equipment already installed, by the addition of substances to the washery water that cause the fine particles in suspension to agglomerate and thus settle more rapidly. This phenomenon, although well known and applied in other fields, has been used at only a few coal washeries in the United States. It is widely employed, however, as an aid in the recovery or disposal of fine coal or impurities, as a means of preventing, stream pollution, and to enable reuse of washery water at many plants in Europe. Pioneering work in the United States has been done principally by two companies -- the Pittsburgh Coal Co., in Pennsylvania, 6/ and the Pacific Coast Coal Co., in Washington.

"Taseko Mines Limited recommenced operation of the Gibraltar copper-molybdenum mine in 2004 and embarked on series of development projects to modernize the mine and increase throughput capacity. The Gibraltar Development Plan 3 (GDP3) project included a second stand-alone copper-molybdenum concentrator, a stand-alone molybdenum separation plant and associated services. Ausenco was contracted to commence the detailed design in 2Q2011, commissioning commenced in 4Q2012 and first ore was processed in 1Q2013. This paper discusses the design, implementation and commissioning of the GDP3 Concentrator.INTRODUCTION The Gibraltar Mine (Gibraltar) property is located in the Cariboo Region of south central British Columbia, approximately 360 kilometers northeast of Vancouver. The site is accessed via an 18 kilometer paved road from the town of McLeese Lake, which is located on the province’s main north-south highway between the cities of Williams Lake and Quesnel. Gibraltar was originally developed by Placer Development and commenced production in 1972. Gibraltar was acquired, while on care and maintenance, by Taseko Mines Limited (Taseko) in 1999 during a period of unusually low metal prices. Taseko recommenced operations at Gibraltar in 2004, and embarked on series of development projects to modernize the mine and increase throughput capacity. The 1972 Gibraltar process flowsheet incorporated two-stage crushing followed by rod and ball milling and flotation. In 2008 Gibraltar completed their first development stage that included the installation of a SAG mill, converting the existing rod mills to ball mills and adding additional flotation capacity. Gibraltar continued development with the installation of an in-pit primary crusher, expansion of the bulk regrind circuit, expansion of the cleaner flotation circuit, replacement of the tailings pumping system and replacement of the concentrate filters and dryer."

The success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining depends on many factors. Most important is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three categories: • Geometric conditions - machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity; • Physical conditions - material properties, rock strengths, ability to dig, driving surfaces; and • Chemical conditions - acid-base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden. This article incorporates these conditions by conceptually modeling compliance-oriented contour mining methods, particularly haulback methods, using the combined front-end loader (FEL)/ truck, tractor/scraper, and FEL-truck and scraper. Engineering analyses, including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces) and drainage requirements can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized, three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple, two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

Physical Conditions Great Britain The physical conditions in the mines investigated in Great Britain are similar to those found in the mines of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, with the important difference that many of the coal seams visited were interspersed by a large number of heavy faults, making the development of a continuous face operation difficult, and in many cases the life of a unit development was exceptionally short, adding to unit cost; but in spite of these difficulties, a great deal has been accomplished in the application of mechanical loading units in a number of the mines in the areas visited. The coal-bearing measures, as in Nova Scotia, consist of shales and sandstones, and in some sections mussel bands overlie the coal seams making roof conditions difficult'. In several mines, the main roof consisted of weak shale bind, being held by a coal roof of varying thickness. This shale bind had a tendency to flow when the coal roof was broken. The floor, in some cases where cutter loaders were operated successfully, consisted of weak, flaky shales with very little resistance and a tendency to disintegrate into powder when broken. The depth of cover under which these mines were operating varied from 250 feet to 2,340 feet, with an average of 1,700 feet. The coal seams varied in height from 3 feet to 8 feet 6 inches, and the gradients from level to 33 per cent. The seams vary in hardness, but all-with the exception of one seam, the 'Morrison Busty'- presented a cutting problem similar to that found in Nova Scotia. The structure and cleavage of the coal was well defined and uniform. Some of the seams visited were gassy, ?but the temperature of the workings generally was not in excess of 70°F.

The Nonmetals Division studies problems relating to the use of minerals, many of which are important to national defense, for purposes other than the: extraction of metals. In fact, virtually all of the work of the division has been diverted to investigations pertaining to better use of the Nation's natural nonmetallics is resources as weapons of defense. The experiment stations of the division are at Norris, Tenn.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Seattle, Wash.; and College Park, Md. Studies involving the application of electric power to the nonmetallic minerals are conducted at the Electrotechnical Laboratory at Norris, and investigations on mineral-dressing treatment are conducted mainly at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa. The cleaning and preparation of coal are studied at both Tuscaloosa and the Northwest Experiment Station Lit Seattle (other projects relating to utilization of coal are conducted by the Coal Division of they Bureau of Mines). Problems covering the use of minerals and fundamental problems as to their properties are studied at College Park.

FEDERAL Bureau of Mines. - The Bureau of Mines does not make assays, analyses, or tests for individuals or firms unless they be incidental to investiga¬tions that are of possible benefit to the entire mineral industry. All significant results obtained in this way are made public through published reports. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be subjected to a cursory examination.

It is commonly recognized that seismicity can be induced by rock failures or slip along geologic structures around mining excavations. The unpredictable nature of these events and their proximity to the working area may raise safety concerns in underground mining operations. Modeling can be a useful tool for estimating seismic potential for a given mine layout, but the challenge is to detect a seismic event and estimate its intensity in the model. One well-documented approach is to monitor the variation in the energy content of the model and record potentially damaging seismic events when there is a significant release of energy. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) employed this approach using 3DEC modeling software to simulate the anomalous seismic events that occurred in a deep longwall mine in Virginia in 2005. A four-panel model of the mine was constructed utilizing a 2D cross section at the location of the mining face at the time of the event. Seismic potentials associated with the development of each panel are evaluated by recording the seismic energy released during the simulation. The results demonstrate the occurrence of two relatively significant events during the mining of the last panel, which are consistent with the historical observations at the mine.

"Irgiredmet Institute carried out the study on the development of gold recovery technology from refractory ore from a Russian deposit. The ore contained 1.1 g/t Au, 1.5% of pyrite and 2.4% of pyrrhotite. The recovery of gold achieved was 84.7% using gravity with generation of high grade recoverable gold concentrate and gravity middling. In the course of lime treatment, cyanidation of the middling followed by tailings detoxification the consumption of reagents was 13.0 kg/t CaO, 95 kg/t NaCN and 72 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 of the concentrate. This was capital intensive.In order to decrease the consumption of reagents, magnetic separation of the middling of the concentrates from gravity separation was added to this flow sheet. Pyrrotite recovered to magnetic fraction, which did not contain gold in accordance to this advanced flow sheet. The mass yield of pyrite goldbearing non-magnetic fraction decreased down to 1.5 times in relative to gravity middling. The slurry filtration prior to and after cyanidation allowed the organization of cyanide solution recycling.The results of pilot plant tests using the developed flow sheet showed that the content of pyrrhotite in the non-magnetic fraction decreased from 59.1% to 11.3%. The reagents consumption was 12 kg/t CaO, 3 kg/t NaCN and 16 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 of the pyrite concentrate. The total gold recovery using this flow sheet was 83.4%. Due to a decreased consumption of reagents, cost efficiency of the process was achieved. Based on the results of this research, a project design criteria was developed. A processing plant with the annual throughput of 2.6 million tonnes of ore is being designed."
