A major problem encountered in dump leaching operations is the plugging of both the dump and the piping by precipitated iron compounds. Bureau of Mines research to obtain basic data on agitation leaching and dump leaching methods has shown that the addition of organic chelating reagents can significantly enhance the lixiviant permeability through the ore and the concentration of the metal values in the liquor. For example, the addition of 5 giL citric acid (CA) to a conventional sulfuric acid lixiviant almost doubled the fluid flow rate through 5-cm-diameter laboratory columns containing copper ore. After 185 h of per-colation leaching, the metal concentrations with (and without, in parentheses) CA were 1.7 (1.5) giL Cu, 200 (70) ppm Mn, 160 (40) ppm AI, and 6 (3) ppm Co. The enhancement of metal concentrations with chelating reagents such as CA was confirmed by determining the solubil-ity of several metal ions as functions of pH and chelating reagent con-centration. When ferric ions became insoluble at pH values above 3, the concentrations of other ions also decreased. The addition of che-lating reagents kept iron, as well as the other dissolved metals, in solution even at pH values as high as 5. Citric acid was a more effective chelating reagent than gluconic acid, oxalic acid, or sodium lignin sulfonate.

This study evaluated the effects of collector type amide-amine compared with those of conventional etheramine acetate (both cationic collectors) on the surface properties of quartz and hematite. An examination of certain properties of the reagents indicated that the new collector amide-amine has CMC (critical micelle concentration) and pKa values (100 mg/L and 8.2, respectively) significantly lower than those of etheramine (800 mg/L and 9.4, respectively). Microflotation tests showed that the recoveries of quartz with amide-amine in all the concentrations tested were higher than those with etheramine. This is attributed to its lower CMC and pKa values. The selectivity window between quartz and hematite flotation using amideamine was higher at pH 10.5 (approximately 80% for 5 mg/L). Therefore, the use of starch is not necessary in siliceous itabirite flotation by amide–amine collector. Zeta potential measurements and infrared spectra reveal that the adsorption of amide-amine collector on quartz surface occurs mainly by electrostatic attraction. Considering the better collectability of amide-amine for quartz flotation and lower adsorption affinity for hematite surface than etheramine, the amide-amine is a promising collector to be used in reversal iron ore flotation.

British Columbia (BC) is Canada’s most western province. The landscape in BC is amongst the most beautiful and pristine in the world. Along with its beauty come vast mountain ranges, coastal rain forests, swamplands, deep river valleys, and almost every type of landscape imaginable. These all have, or at one time had, logging roads constructed. Some of these areas should never have had roads constructed due to poor drainage and unstable slopes, but some of the roads could be considered engineering masterpieces. To navigate a vehicle the size of an off-road logging truck down the side of a mountain with an 80°h side slope or greater can be a hair-raising experience. Not to mention coastal rains and/or high elevation blizzards. These factors collectively make logging BC’s most hazardous occupation. People are seriously hurt, sometimes even killed everyday.

[Portland cement is a product made from a combination of limestone and argillaceous material which would supply the necessary amounts f calcium, silica, alumina and iron to form cementious compounds when fired at high temperatures. The resulting mixture, usually around 80% limestone and 20% argillaceous, is ground nine (80% -200 mesh), blended and then fired1 (2600-2700°F) to produce a cement clinker from which the final cement product is produced by grinding. The argillaceous component can be shale, clay, slate or other sources of the individual components of silica, alumina and iron. This paper deals with a case where a clay component was under consideration. The planned Plant site was to be located at a well defined limestone deposit. When it came to the argillaceous component, the nearest uniform deposit of clay was over 50 miles away and would require purchase of land or clay from the owner plus the daily delivery costs to the plant site. This situation made the plant site economically questionable. It was decided that a local clay deposit, which was available at the plant site but was orginally not considered due to lack of chemical uniformity and its high free silica content, would be reconsidered.]

The town of Greenwich, CT, an exclusive suburb of New York City awarded several contracts for the installation of sanitary sewer in the North Mianus section of town. The Valley Road section was the most challenging from a rock excavation standpoint. The cut was up to 14 ft (4.25m), with adjacent utilities [20 in. (500mm) water, 6 in. (150mm) water and 8 in. (200mm) gas] located to within 5 ft. (1.5m) of the proposed sewer trench. Rock types varied but were ultra metamorphic in nature, ranging from quartzites, granite gneiss and various types of migmatities.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and the principal component of natural gas. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane, and underground coal mines must ensure that methane released into the mine during coal extraction does not build to dangerous levels. This is accomplished in part through the use of large-volume ventilation systems that remove methane from the mine and release it to the atmosphere. Although the methane concentration exhausted is quite low (typically <1 percent), the volume of air that ventilation systems move is so great that they actually constitute the largest source of methane emissions from underground coal mines. Each year underground coal mines throughout the world emit more than 500 billion cubic feet of methane from their ventilation systems. An air pollution control technology, thermal oxidation using a flow-reversal reactor (TFRR), has emerged as a potential solution to ventilation air methane (VAM) emission mitigation. One manufacturer of TFRRs has demonstrated its oxidizer design (the VOCSIDIZER?) at coal mines in the United Kingdom and Australia. These demonstrations tested the technology?s effectiveness at oxidizing low-concentration methane, as well as its ability to tap the excess heat to produce steam for electric power generation. In early 2007, the first U.S. demonstration of this technology began operation at an abandoned mine in West Virginia. The project is designed to prove the technology?s operational robustness, its ability to reliably oxidize methane at concentrations typical of mine exhausts, and its safety. If the technology is employed at active underground coal mines, it offers the potential to mitigate substantial quantities of global methane emissions. This paper discusses global VAM emissions, options for the recovery and utilization of VAM, and existing projects such as WestVAMP in Australia and the ongoing U.S. VAM demonstration project.

All ores have an economic optimum particle size (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006). This optimum value is often a compromise between the need to achieve adequate liberation for the efficient separation and recovery of valuable minerals and the energy consumed by the crushing and grinding process. It has been recognized for nearly three decades that grinding is the most expensive and least efficient stage in mineral processing (El-shall and Somasundaran, 1984). At that time it was estimated that grinding consumed between 25 and 70% of the total power required in mineral processing. This recognition drove the development of new stirred mill fine grinding technology in the 1990s (Jankovic et.al, 2003; Enderle et. al., 1997; Massey, 2008). These milling technologies have a reduced energy consumption compared to traditional fine grinding using ball mills. In the ?coarser? fine grinding applications this improvement is approximately 30%. The benefits increase to above 50% in ultrafine grinding applications (Lichter and Davey, 2006). Despite these gains, the US Department of Energy reported that an additional energy savings of up to 37% is possible in the minerals industry. They identified continuing research and development and implementing best practices in both grinding and materials handling as the primary avenues for the additional reduction (BCS, 2007).

The paper point out the Antamina's social policies with Huascarán National Park. The project had required the mine engage with the communities most affected by the mine development, its operation, and closure. In this sense, operating within this social context has required Antamina to first be effective in understanding who the affected people are –at the local, regional, national and international levels. This understanding is also a process that requires time. Through the HWG, the company has achieved engagement, as well as an understanding an appreciation of viewpoints and perspective that has resulted in the protection of HNP, as well as the timely development of the project, with support of stakeholders. Therefore, the experience of the HWG was become for other natural resource projects in complex settings, involving national and international stakeholders and protected or sensitive areas.

"Natural deposits of sodium sulphate are the result of normal geological processes. They are world-wide in occurrence and are found in depressions in arid and semi-arid regions. Primarily, the sodium sulphate deposits of the prairies are post-glacial and differ from rock salt deposits, which originated from connate water (fossil sea-water). Sodium sulphate on the Canadian prairies occurs as brine or in beds of intermittent and/or permanent crystals. Most beds are contaminated with various amounts of silt, sand and decayed organic matter. Soluble impurities such as chlorides, carbonates and bicarbonates of sodium and sulphates of magnesium and calcium are leached out from the soil of the surrounding run-off area of the deposits.In this paper, the origin of sodium sulphate, and the physical and chemical aspects related to the development of the Ingebrigt Lake deposit are dealt with. The problems of garnering raw material, and of refining and de-hydration are discussed, with emphasis on the Ingebrigt Lake plant. The utilization of the ""Total Power Concept"" in a sodium sulphate plant is described. The principal uses of sodium sulphate are also discussed."

The increasing pace of modern mining makes constantly greater demands upon the several contributing departments of rock breaking and transport, and rock-drilling, as the spearhead of attack, has received a great deal of attention with respect to both machines and steels. By a series of mechanical improvements, combined with the application of selected heat-treated alloy steels, the rock-drill has now been developed into a machine capable of rapid drilling and long service under severe working conditions. As a factoryproduct made under strict metallurgical control it is as foolproof as, say, the modern automobile, and, like its prototype, it can be kept in efficient operation by a minor amount of attention during use and by periodical adjustments and replacements.The same cannot be said, unfortunately, of the drills with which the machine is supplied; in conventional mine-shop practice these are made of the best tool steel shaped and heat-treated under the poorest of metallurgical conditions.The crudities of steel-shop practice have, in fact, always prevented the full exploitation of the steels available at any time, and even at the present day the general standard of treatment offers a contrast with the quality of the steels which moves the metallurgist to amusement, despondency or outrage, according to his temperament. Nevertheless, the tendency persists to meet the increasing demands of the rock-drill primarily by the use of still better steels, and secondarily by improvement, of the steel-shop practice. Athird type of development is the introduction of factorymade tools in the form of detachable bits and rods. Noise in general and drilling noise in particular have received increasing attention within the South African mining industry during the last 10?15 years. The Mine Health and Safety Committee1, during their 2003 annual summit, established two significant milestones to be met by December 2008 and December 2013. The 2008 milestone target is that of no more than ten per cent deterioration in hearing among occupationally exposed individuals, whereas the 2013 milestone target is that of less than 110 dB sound pressure levels at any place in the workplace. While these targets relate to general noise within the mining industry, it is widely believed that the most significant source of noise contributing to noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) among the underground workforce, is that of pneumatic rock drills. Data pertaining to the noise emission level of any machine is generally reported as either a sound pressure level or a sound power level of a single machine measured under free field conditions as defined in Appendix 3 of SABS-ISO 37442. However, rock drills are seldom used in isolation and underground conditions cannot be considered as free field. A methodology for the selection of rock drills on the basis of total operating cost has been developed. However, this paper focuses on the noise elements of the generic methodology and provides a model for the prediction of the composite sound pressure level and the equivalent noise exposure levels of groups of individuals from machines, used singly and in combination in an underground environment based on the sound pressure level determined according to SABS-ISO 3744 under free field conditions. The methodology includes provision for the consideration of the effect of hearing protection devices and the use of multiple machines in combination and provides an indication of the potential costs of hearing compensation.

In order to maintain a production rate of 6,000 tonnes per day from underground at the Williams Operating Corporation, two independent mining areas were required which created a long narrow sill pillar between them. During initial mining of the sill pillar there were a number of significant ground falls [LeBlanc and Murdoch, 2000] and in March 1999, with no active mining ongoing in the sill pillar area, a rockburst of magnitude 3.0 Nuttli occurred. Extensive ground support was designed and installed to withstand events of similar magnitude [Bawden and Jones, 2002]. A mine wide microseismic system was installed to monitor mine induced seismic behaviour over the entire mine. The area most directly affected by the 1999 rockburst was rehabilitated using a highly ductile support design. Along with microseismic instrumentation, the areas were instrumented using conventional SMART Cables and SMART MPBX?s. Subsequent to this, the area was impacted by a large number of high magnitude seismic events [magnitudes between 1.7 and 3.5 Nuttli]. The ground support performed very well during these events, providing confidence in the mine?s ability to control the ground under severe rockburst conditions. Analyses of microseismic and conventional instrumentation, combined with numerical analyses of sequence alternatives, were used to develop an optimal mining strategy for the sill pillar area. The selected strategy involved utilization of instrumentation data and calibrated model results to analyze yield zones in the sill. The analyzed ?yielded? zones were assessed to be low seismic risk. Initial mining in the sill was then concentrated in these low risk areas, with the objective of further concentrating stress into the remaining seismically active area, in order to induce ultimate failure of the sill. Continuing large magnitude seismicity and resulting damage in the remaining ?high seismic risk? area, led to abandoning a second portion of the footwall access and the strategic decision to extract a stope near the centre of this zone in order to force final failure of the sill pillar. During execution of this plan two large magnitude seismic events occurred resulting in destressing and final failure of the remaining sill pillar. The paper provides a detailed description of this ?strategic mine sequence driven self-destressing process? and the implications to final extraction planning in this area of the mine.

The new euphoria in diamond exploration brings with it a need to understand the challenges that new projects can face in different stages of the development and risks that the commercial outcomes from the new projects fall short of expectations. In many cases, the problems are related to a poor understanding of the technical risks and a failure to adequately address them during the course of investigation. Failure to evaluate all disciplines to the same level of certainty could lead to a situation where the important issues are only identified late in the project development, resulting in costly delays and financial difficulties. The diamond projects located in Canadian Arctic, with its challenging environmental, geographical, social, political and geological contexts are especially sensitive to the high variability of the outcome. This presentation highlights some of the technical aspects that could be the leading sources of risk in diamond projects and could ultimately result in inappropriate mine designs, reducing the economic outcome.

The final report contains a summary of the work performed under this contract, In addition to the report itself, other products were derived from this effort. Several hardware items were prototyped for use with underground belt conveyors, and a manual for installation and maintenance procedures was developed and published under separate cover. Recommendations have been included for implementation of the tools and the manual or, an industry-wide basis.

[This paper gives the details of tests to determine the design of stoppings capable of withstanding a pressure, applied to either side, of 50 pounds per square inch,6 as required by section 104 (a) of the Operating Regulations to Govern Coal-Mining Methods on Leased Lands on the Public Domain, issued in 1921 and quoted oil page 3. The regulations stipulated that the design for such stoppings must lie approved by the United States Bureau of Standards. The engineers of that organization felt that knowledge of the strength of such structures with respect to the effect of explosion pressure in comparison with static pressure and the strength of the walls which furnish the abutments was insufficient to justify drafting specifications; therefore, tests were needed to give information upon which a rational system of design could be based. A study was then begun; and several series of tests, made by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Bureau of Standards in cooperation, grave information upon which are based the detailed specifications offered in a later section. Slabs representing concrete stoppings, with and without reinforcement, were tested at the Bureau of Standards in Washington D. C.; afterwards, full-scale stoppings were tested at the Bureau of Mines Experimental mine near Pittsburgh. It was assumed that in most coal mines the strength of the floor and roof could not be relied on, but dependence must be placed upon the strength of the coal ribs. The tests developed that the maximum strength of an unreinforced concrete stopping was obtained when it acted as a flat arch buttressed against the coil ribs; but its ultimate strength depended upon the resistance to movement offered by the coal strata against which its ends were restrained or buttressed.]

The Gallinas Mountains are in northern Lincoln County and southern Torrance County, New Mexico, USA where a series of alkaline igneous bodies, including porphyritic latite, trachyte/syenite, andesite, and rhyolite laccoliths, flows, dikes, and plugs, have intruded Permian sedimentary rocks belonging to the Permian Abo, Yeso, and Glorieta Formations. A small amount of bastnaesite, a REE mineral, was recovered during processing for fluorite from the Gallinas Mountains. Four types of deposits are found in the Gallinas Mountains: epithermal REE-F veins, Cu-REE-F veins, REE-F breccia pipes and iron skarn deposits; all are associated with Tertiary alkaline to alkalic-calcic igneous rocks. Alteration includes brecciation, silicification, chloritization, and fenitization. District zonation is defined by Cu-REE-F (±Pb, Zn, Ag) veins that form center of the district, surrounded by REE-F veins. Carbonatites are inferred at depth by the presence of fenitization, carbonatization of the breccias, presence of REE and similarity of the intrusive rocks and mineralization to areas with known carbonatites.

Remote methane detection State and federal regulations require frequent measurements to verify that safe methane levels are maintained in underground coal mines. Ventilation control is the primary means of maintaining safe methane levels. In the immediate face area, where the highest methane levels occur, methane measurements are required every 20 minutes during active mining. To perform these measurements, temporary roof supports must be erected. This allows a miner to reach the face. There a hand-held methanometer is used to make the measurements. This procedure is time consuming and potentially hazardous. To facilitate the measuring process and reduce the miner&apos;s exposure to roof falls, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype optical device. It can measure methane remotely from distances up to 12 m (40 ft). The device uses two infrared signals, reflected from the coal face, rib, or roof. One signal is absorbed by the methane, the other is not. The ratio of the two signals determines the average methane concentration in the face area. The prototype detector has also been successfully tested at the Lake Lynn, PA Laboratory. Instantaneous responses were obtained for methane in the ventilation airflow and for methane layered near the roof. Conventional methanometers required from five to 25 seconds to respond to the methane in the ventilation airflow. They did not respond to methane in the roof layer. Ignition suppression system The incidence has increased of fractional spark ignition at the mine face. One reason is the advent of mechanical mining. Another is the more difficult ventilation conditions associated with deeper and more extensive underground workings. To cope with the problem of frictional ignition, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to develop a system that would provide rapid detection of incipient methane-air ignition. Then, rapid dispersion of a quenching agent would ensure that the methane flame was extinguished while it was still relatively small. This concept was successfully demonstrated by suppressing explosions in the Bureau&apos;s Bruceton, PA experimental mine. But the bulkiness of the early storage-dispersal system proved impractical to retrofit onto face equipment. In a cooperative effort by the Bureau and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a more compact system has been developed and is being tested.
