"This paper presents the challenges associated with the design and construction of a steel sheet pile cofferdam supported with one level of grouted anchors in clean to silty sand with gravel. The initial assessment of the subsurface conditions indicated loose to medium dense soil with intermittent dense to very dense layers with no occurrence of cobbles and boulders. Sheet piles were proposed to be installed to a depth of 24 m below the ground surface to limit dewatering requirements for the cofferdam. During sheet pile installation, refusal of piles occurred at multiple locations forming passages for increased flow into the cofferdam. Modifications were made in the design of the dewatering system as a result of the increased flow. Finite element modeling was used to select the necessary modifications to the dewatering system within the cofferdam. Wells were installed based on the findings of the numerical model. Model simulations showed good comparison with monitoring of the field installed dewatering system.INTRODUCTIONIt is necessary to consider the impact of the ground water, subsurface stratigraphy, strength, and drainage behavior of the soil for the design and construction of cofferdams. This paper presents a case history of the construction of a cofferdam in Northern Ontario, Canada. The project consists of the construction of a powerhouse, intake, and tailrace which will generate around 28 MW of renewable clean energy by diverting water from New Post Creek through a power house and discharge into the Abitibi River. The focus of this paper is the dewatering and excavation support required to permit construction of the powerhouse. The layout of the cofferdam is shown in Fig. 1. The cofferdam for the powerhouse is rectangular in shape with sheet piles on all four sides intended to be driven to the design toe El. 101 m. The east and west walls have a length of 46.3 m. North and south sides are 47.6 m long; and in addition, two cantilever sheet pile walls bound the tailrace on the west side and two cantilever walls were installed on the east for construction of the penstock inlet. The ground surface in the powerhouse cofferdam area, before commencement of sheet pile driving, was brought to El. 125; the ground then slopes up to the East, toward New Post Creek, and the site is bounded on the West by the Abitibi River. 186 pairs of sheet piles were used to create the cofferdam and cantilever walls. The deepest excavation is to elevation 114.4 m. Within the west half of the cofferdam footprint, the base of excavation slopes upward at 3H: 1V to facilitate the tailrace discharge into Abitibi River.SOIL STRATIGRAPHYThe cofferdam design was based on the geotechnical investigation conducted by AECOM (2014) which included two relevant boreholes near the powerhouse footprint. The ground elevation at the time of investigation varied between 131 to 129 m. The material observed to the full depth of investigation was comprised generally of coarse to fine sand and gravelly sand or a sand matrix with gravelly inclusions. Some intermittent layers of clay and silt intrusions were also observed. Generally the soils grade finer away from the river. SPT N60 values were recorded in two borings during the field investigation with values reported from 3 to 92. The in-situ conditions ranged from compact to dense with some loose and some very dense zones. Figure 2 shows the variation in SPT N60 values with elevation."

"The development of on-stream analyzers (OSA), such as those based on X-ray fluorescence (XRF), has been key to improve metallurgical performance of flotation processes. However, since these analyzers are shared between several streams, they typically provide grade measurements every about 10-15 minutes. In general, this frequency is too long compared to process dynamics and so, implementing an efficient feedback control strategy based on OSA can be difficult. In addition, due to the limited capacity of OSA systems, several important intermediate streams are not analysed, but could provide relevant information about the state of a flotation circuit.To overcome this problem, vision systems have been developed in the past to predict concentrate grade based on froth color – this could be very useful to control flotation performance between OSA measurements. However, applications reported in the literature typically use univariate summary statistics of the full red, blue, and green color distribution of froth images, while RGB images are truly multivariate. Although, in some cases, grade prediction was achieved with reasonable accuracy, one may, by using only summary statistics, miss important information about the state of the flotation process.This paper investigates the application of Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) concepts to flotation froth images. These techniques are based on multivariate statistical methods such as PCA and PLS, which have the ability to analyze large databases (such as digital images) and summarize the relevant information content of the data into a small number of latent variables, capturing the most important features of the images for concentrate grade prediction. The potential of application of these methods in the mineral processing industry is illustrated using a few industrial case studies."

An investigation on the breakage characteristics of closely sized orc samples at different levels of input energy was carried out to determine an appearance function for possible use in ball mill modelling. A consistent pattern of breakage behaviour was observed and the resultant size distributions could be described by a one-parameter, ('t'), family of curves. For each particle size range tested, this parameter 't' has an exponential relationship with input energy below an upper energy limit. A tentative linear relationship between the input energy at a constant value of 't' and the work-index leads to reconstruction of 'I' - input-energy curves from the work-index values. To normalise the efrect of particle size and input energy, multidimensional cubic spline regression was performed on thc entire range of data. The results indicated that the parameter 't' can be determined, reasonably accurately, as a function of Ln (input energy, kWh/tonne) and Ln (particle size, mm) for input energies between 0.5 and 8.0 kWh/tonne.

Since the last paper on mining methods was presented to the Annual Conference of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 1:960, numerous advances have been made in drilling and blasting techniques at Mount Morgan. This paper describes the drilling and blasting methods being employed in the open cut. The change over to track mounted percussion drills for all types of primary drilling is almost complete and new techniques such as detergent drilling and pressure loading of ANFO are being applied successfully.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. "The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.INTRODUCTIONThe East-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in North Western Quebec, Canada. The mill was first commissioned in 1938. The flowsheet at that time was a straight cyanidation circuit. The original mill operated in that mode up to the discovery of the Bousquet 2 orebody in 1989 which consisted of a massive copper sulphide ore averaging 0.7% copper and 7 g/mt of gold. Bousquet 2 ore processing required a mill retrofit. Grinding capacity, gravity and copper flotation circuits were inserted prior to the cyanidation circuit in order to achieve 3,200 mtpd capacity at expected recoveries.In 1993, control of the flotation circuit was deemed critical in order to maintain the flotation performance and to reduce cyanide consumption since the copper sulphide contained in the Bousquet 2 ore is a high cyanide consumer (50% bornite). (McMullen, 1999) As a result, the implementation of advanced control strategies in order to increase the metallurgical profitability of the plant and to reduce the operating variability between operators was the most rational alternative. In 1994, Corem was chosen to perform the plant audit and to write the first set of rules. The on-line control strategy was started up in 1995. In 1996 and 1997 the Expert System was shutdown because of an extreme change in the ore coming from the milling of Bousquet #1 ore and the departure of the projects engineer. In 1998, the system was restarted and the results were impressive. Furthermore in May of 2001 a patent was issued for the control strategy. (Breau, 2001)"

In 1979 our company undertook the project of infra-structural work of White Swan Lake Hotel, (International class ) Guangzhou. Visit to the site showed that it was situated at the riverside, covering an area of 54,000 M2 with 30,000 M2 of which reclaimed from Pearl River. The material used for reclamation was black sand which was dredged from the nearby riverbed. The sand had the properties of high permeability and very low internal friction. The basement of the building was 6.2 m below ground level and 3 m lower than the riverbed. Apart from the pile foundation, a diaphragm wall was to be constructed prior to the commencement of excavation work for basement. A feasibility study was carried out to determine the method of construction which would maximize utilization of the plants and equipment that were available in the execution of the aforesaid foundation works. This report concerns only the construction of the diaphragm wall and the performance of the plants employed. A detailed delineation of the construction method is herein discussed

ABSTRACT An overall study was conducted to evaluate the properties and processes influencing the rate and magnitude of consolidation for oil sands fine tailings produced using different extraction processes. As part of the overall study, a comprehensive description of physical and chemical characteristics of fine tailings generated by caustic and non-caustic processes was carried out. Ultimately, the influence of these fundamental properties on the compressibility, hydraulic conductivity and shear strength properties of the fine tailings was assessed. The characteristics of the fine tailings are presented in terms of index properties, mineralogy, specific surface area, water chemistry, liquid limits, particle size distribution and structure. A difference in water chemistry was concluded to be the cause of substantial differences in particle size distributions and degree of dispersion of the comparable caustic and non-caustic fine tailings. The degree of dispersion was consistent with predictions for dispersed clays established by the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) values for these materials. A linear variation of increasing dispersion with increasing SAR up to a SAR value of about 40 has been suggested, above which fine tailings are completely dispersed. The observed dispersed or flocculated structures (viewed using a scanning electron microscope) supported the predictions based on SAR values.

This thermomechanical analysis used the finite element method to investigate the behavior of crushed salt backfill in a waste disposal room situated in a salt dome repository. The first of two objectives was to determine the transient temperature rise and degree of thermomechanical consolidation that occur in the backfill as a function of drillhole depths. The second objective involved the evaluation of closure due to salt creep of unlined emplacement drillholes and the determination of pressure on steel sleeve liners in the drillholes should liners become necessary for canister retrieval. The retrievability period was considered to extend for 25 years after waste emplacement. The canisters were assumed to contain ten-year old high level waste with a thermal output of 4.3 kW at the time of emplacement.

By the end of 2011, the total installed capacity of the ISASMELT? technology will exceed 9 000 000 metric tons per year of feed materials in copper and lead smelters around the world. Commercial plants, operating in Belgium and Germany, are also batch converting copper materials in ISASMELT? furnaces. This TSL technology is equally effective for continuous converting processes, whereupon it is called ISACONVERT?. This paper presents the recently patented ISACONVERT? process for the continuous converting of nickel and Platinum Group Metal (PGM) containing mattes using the calcium ferrite slag system. The paper focuses on the potential application of the ISACONVERT? technology to existing nickel and PGM smelting complexes.

Cable shovel requires continuous monitoring through excavation to achieve reliability, longevity and economic usage. The operating environment and the stress and deformation fields on the front-end assembly must continually be monitored to avoid random fatigue failure. In this paper, the authors advance frontiers of cable shovel reliability through real-time stress and deformation monitoring during excavation. Cable shovel boom stress and deformation analysis are developed using a combination of flexible and rigid body approach. A virtual prototype is developed to simulate the cable shovel excavation in oil sands and to examine the motion, stress and local deformation of the boom. A numerical example is used examine cable shovel boom durability using stress and deformation fields simulation. The results show that stress and deformation are large around the joint between the upper body and the boom. The simulation of the effect of material properties on boom deformation shows that the deformation is larger in hard formation than in soft formation. The study provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

Twelve samples from six Barbour County coal beds were analyzed for this report. The samples collected were generally high sulfur content coals, frequently exceeding 3 percent in the raw-coal sample. Many of them could not be upgraded to acceptable metallurgical standards even by rigorous preparation procedures. The production of coal in the county in 1963 amounted to almost 3 million tons of which 44 percent was mechanically cleaned.

Resonance re-emission from nickel vapour affords a convenient method for isolating the resonance lines at 3415A, 3515A, and 3524A. The vapour is generated by cathodic sputtering and is illuminated by light from a nickel atomic spectral lamp. The resonance lines thus isolated can be usefully employed for absorption measurements on mineral samples where the nickel concentration is too high for measurements with the more sensitive line at 2320A. A spectrophotometer employing a resonance lamp as monochromator possesses several advantages where a great number of determinations are made under routine conditions. The wavelength setting is stable under even the most rigorous conditions and with the provision for automatic setting of full scale deflection the instrument requires virtually no adjustment. The instrument has been used under routine conditions for the determination of nickel (in the range O· 05-2 per cent) in mineral samples.

Past failures of coal refuse embankments have resulted in more intensified efforts in inspections of coal refuse sites. Inspections, however, are mainly qualitative and time consuming. In August 1975 CH2M HILL was awarded a contract to identify, develop, and test a rapid system for monitoring coal refuse embankments to aid in inspections. The rapid monitoring system developed uses convergent and vertical photography from conventional fixed-wing aircraft. The system was tested on an active landslide and on two coal refuse facilities using both black and white and color infrared film. Field tests showed the system was capable of accurate measurement while providing qualitative data through photointerpretation. The accuracy of the system allows it to be used to monitor coal refuse embankments, tailings dams, major earth dams, and natural slopes. Bibliographies of literature reviews in the area of past coal refuse embankment failures, monitoring instruments and methods, and photogrammetry are included.

Molten slag from pyrometallurgical furnaces is tapped at high temperature, carrying a large amount of thermal energy. But the common slag dumping and water granulation methods used for slag treatment do not permit energy recovery. Furthermore, water is present in these processes and while operations are designed to minimize risks of steam explosions, from the contact of slag with water, these common slag handling practices have never been inherently safe. Common handling practices do permit some slags to be sold, but often in low volumes at low prices. Dry granulation offers advantages over these common slag handling practices, including the production of by-products, the recovery of thermal energy, and the eliminated consumption and safety hazards of water. For these reasons, there have been various studies in dry granulation and heat recovery, but most have never been brought to commercial scale due to scalability and cost challenges. Ecomaister- Hatch has developed and brought to commercial scale a reliable and simple dry granulation and heat recovery technology. Here we review common slag handling practices, the developments in dry slag granulation over the last three decades, introduce the Ecomaister-Hatch dry slag granulation process, and elaborate on future applications of the technology in the processing of argon oxygen decarburization and blast furnace slags.

"The evaluation of health hazards within the treatment of mineral and waste materials is gaining more and more importance in industrial countries. The need to control occupational safety has been recognised, and regulations which describe general protective measurements for personnel provide a tool to protect their health. It is the aim of the paper to give an outlook for practical approaches to risk assessment and to present measures for exposure reduction in accordance with the state of the art in Germany.Both the treatment of minerals and of waste materials are described in relation to the risk assessment. The method of evaluating health hazards in the two industries is similar and therefore both examples are presented next to each other.The example presented in the paper is the German “Biostoffverordnung” (the regulation for biological materials) which is important for the waste treatment industry. All kinds of waste treatment facilities (like composting facilities, waste dumps, sorting facilities for packaging materials) are obliged to carry out an assessment of health hazards for a variety of working areas and working places. The possible safety requirements deriving from this regulation are presented and discussed under the aspect of biological hazards.All over the world each country has different guidelines and regulations but all have one target in common – to protect the employees. This can be achieved through a good management system of occupational health and safety. "SynopsisScattered mining was practised on Kusasalethu Mine (previously Elandsrand Gold Mine) prior to 1998, but at deeper mining levels it was no longer feasible, since it would have resulted in unacceptably high stress levels and energy release rates. Longwall mining was not adopted at these depths as the mine required a more flexible mining method owing to the highly variable grade and the presence of geological structures. A mining method was developed that consisted of dip stabilizing pillars for regional support, as well as bracket pillars to clamp geological structures. A strict sequence of extraction was followed and this, together with the particular layout, was called the ‘sequential grid mining method’. This method addressed two key problems, namely negotiating adverse geology and the erratic grade of the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) orebody. However, a significant drop in production rates resulted in the need for alternatives and improvements to the original mine design. Modifications to the design were proposed in order to increase production rates, and an investigation to consider the rock engineering implications of these modifications was conducted. The study indicated that the modified method, called the ‘multi-raise mining method’, appears to be feasible and might address some of the production problems that were experienced with the original sequential grid design. An analysis of actual seismic data showed no significant differences between the original sequential grid mining and the implemented multi-raise mining. The numerical modelling of the mining layouts showed slightly higher interim energy release rates (ERRs) and average pillar stress (APS) levels during the extraction process. The final values are nevertheless identical to that of the original sequence. The study also investigated the use of a modelled moment method to analyse future seismic trends. The study illustrated that the expected seismic trends will be very similar for the multi-raise method compared to the original sequential grid mining method. This study is nevertheless considered of a preliminary nature and ongoing monitoring and analysis of seismic data at the mine is required to verify the response of the rock mass to the modified sequence and increased extraction rate. In particular, future work needs to investigate the effect of mining rate (advance rates in individual panels as well as volume of mining in particular raise lines) on the level of seismicity."

Laboratory flotation tests on sized fractions of a certain number of selected minerals with homologous fatty acid derivatives (i.e. sodium salts and amine acetates) confirm that the higher homologues are more efficient collectors than the lower. Tests were carried out on sized material and finer size fractions floated at lower collector concentrations.It is suggested that selective flotation is best achieved with the reagent which most readily floats the most friable mineral in the ore, and that grade of product will be improved with the lowest usable homologue.INTRODUCTIONFlotation of non-sulphide minerals with fatty acids as collectors is usually less selective than the flotation of sulphide minerals with xanthate collectors. 1. Domestic Production and Use: In 1982, 13 companies operated 30 primary aluminum reduction plants, with 3 firms accounting for 55% of production. Washington, Oregon, and Montana accounted for 34% of the production; Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, and Arkansas 18%; Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina, and North Carolina 14%; other central and eastern States 34%. Based on published producer prices, output of primary metal in 1982 was valued at over $5.5 billion. Aluminum consumption by 25,000 firms was centered in the East Central United States. Packaging accounted for an estimated 39% of domestic consumption in 1982, transportation 20%, building 14%, electrical 8%, consumer durables 8%, and other uses 11%.

Automated multi-sensor core loggers (MSCL) measure petrophysical properties of diamond drill cores, including gamma density, P-wave velocity, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. A Geotek MSCL system has been used to record petrophysical data on archival drill core from Cadia East Au-Cu porphyry deposit, New South Wales, Australia, for correlation with metallurgical parameters. P-wave modulus, calculated from density and P-wave velocity, exhibits a correlation with small-scale crushability (A*b) test results, and hence offers a means for æcontinuousÆ characterisation of ore crushability at Cadia East. Magnetic susceptibility has proved to be a good indicator of alteration styles, and is a possible indicator of crushability.
