This paper describes a key element in the construction of a major project undertaken by Harbourfront Corporation in its efforts to rejuvenate the central Toronto waterfront. The Spadina Pier forms one of the two major structures of the $10 million marina complex. Completed in early 1986, the 150 metre(490 ft.) long by 43 metre(140 ft.) wide pier structure will contain a 320 car parking garage as well as providing the foundation of a 17-story residential tower and a two-story retail/commercial complex. However, the pier structure posed a considerable challenge to its developers due to the the many restrictions imposed on the site by the environmental authorities which ruled out the construction of dykes or the placing of other fill materials on the highly contaminated bottom sediments. In addition, access at the site was restricted by its proximity to the main harbour navigation channel and a grain elevator berth. The original design called for a cofferdam to form an integral part of the finished structure. However, the contractor chose to regard the cofferdam as a temporary structure and proposed to construct the pier in the dry by enclosing the 10,000 square metre(107,600 sf) site with a 450 metre(1480 ft.) long single wall steel sheet pile cofferdom 7.5 metres(25 ft.) from the final pier structure. This paper will describes the design and construction of the cofferdam. Prior to finalizing the pier design, a geotechnical investigation of the shale bedrock was undertaken as well as a small sheet pile test cell program to evaluate the feasibility of driving a Canadian manufactured cold-rolled sheet pile into the bedrock. Relying on the design parameters for the shale bedrock, Foundation designed the cofferdam utilizing a post-tensioned bipod bracing system to resist a 7 metre(23 ft.) hydrostatic head as well as the maximum wind and wave forces expected at the site. The bipod bracing system consists of diagonal H-pile raker piles and verticle pipe piles anchored to bedrock with post-tensioned anchors grouted into bedrock.

"Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite. La caractérisation systématique de la minéralogie des gîtes de sulfures massifs peut fournir des indications précieuses sur la genèse des minerais et le traitement métallurgique qui ne seraient pas disponibles par d’autres méthodes. Nous décrivons un procédé par lequel (1) un algorithme est utilisé pour calculer l’abondance de minéraux normatifs à partir d’analyses lithogéochimiques, (2) les résultats sont exprimés dans des blocs diagrammes, (3) les résultats sont par la suite validés par analyse d’image automatisée sur un microscope électronique à balayage en électrons rétrodiffusés et par cartographie en rayons X sur des échantillons constitués de grains montés en résine, et (4) les résultats de cette validation sont combinés aux données texturales obtenues par microscopie optique.Cette technique est appliquée aux sulfures magmatiques de Ni-Cu-Co du gisement Ovoïde, en utilisant les analyses géochimiques de 3175 échantillons de roche totale. L’Ovoïde comprend trois types de minerai. Foram realizados testes completos de pelotamento para avaliar os efeitos da adição de uma solução de cal hidratada ao pellet feed na etapa de pelotamento. Foram preparadas soluções com diferentes concentrações de cal hidratada e após a mistura das mesmas no pellet feed foram realizados testes de pelotamento onde os principais parâmetros de qualidade das pelotas cruas geradas foram avaliados. O diâmetro médio final das pelotas foi o principal parâmetro influenciado pela adição de cal hidratada. A presença dos íons Ca2+ e CaOH+, em função da dosagem de cal, altera o estado de dispersão do minério de ferro, afetando assim o processo de formação das pelotas. Ainda, os cátions Ca2+ presentes no pellet feed interagem com o aglomerante orgânico e com a bentonita, reduzindo a capacidade desses agentes em controlar o crescimento das pelotas.

Pilot Hole "X" was drilled to test the formations through which the ventilation shaft for the proposed U.S.B.M. demonstration oil shale mine would be drilled. The geologic formations encountered in this hole are discussed. Correlation of the geologic horizons encountered in this hole with those encountered in nearby drill holes was accomplished by the use of geophysical logs. Data on the geophysical interpretations are provided. The anticipated geotechnical characteristics of the geologic units encountered in Pilot Hole "X" are described.

Selection of the best possible truck type (model) is of crucial importance for the mine decision-makers. In this paper, authors contribute to the body of knowledge by developing a novel methodology for the selection of mining truck. Both the Coefficient of Technical Level (CTL) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods were used in this study. The CTL represents a mathematical function which takes into consideration the interrelations among the main technical parameters of mining trucks. The authors developed a hierarchical structure where both attribute categories and their importance, i.e. priority or weight in the selection process were determined. For each category, a number of sub-attributes and their priorities were assigned, and a pairwise comparison among them was performed using the AHP method. In the final part of the study, the CTL was integrated into the AHP and represents a holistic approach in the selection of mining trucks. A case study on 180 tonnes truck category offered by five manufacturers was carried out. A sensitivity study of obtained results was also performed indicating a very stable solution. The methodology presented in this paper may be used by mining operators to help in the selection of a specific type when acquiring a new truck. It may also be used by equipment manufacturers to help in analysis of potential benefits of envisaged modifications concerning an existing truck type and/or development of a new type.

Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant, which produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore.The E48 extraction level is located approximately 581 m below surface and consists of ten extraction drives and 214 drawpoints. Several stress measurements carried out at various levels in both E26 and E48 indicated a low underground regional stress environment and a low to moderate stress state in the E48 orebody. The E48 block used a post undercut strategy that was initiated in 2009, with production commencing in September 2010 and cave-through to the surface occurring approximately four months later in January 2011. Changes to the cut-off grade and fixed prices meant that Northparkes was able to develop an additional two drives to the north of the existing cave and one additional drive to the south. Modelling of the cavability of the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over to the existing cave shape. Based on modelling and a desire to reduce the risk of the project, preconditioning was adopted. Along with the requirement of safely hydrofracturing an active cave, a measure of the success of the preconditioning was desired. Few block cave operations have developed extension drives adjacent to existing caves.This paper summarises the lessons learnt from the development of this extension project, with a specific focus on ground control and monitoring.CITATION:Snyman, L, Webster, S and Samosir, J, 2016. IN 1902, a famous Canadian geologist made the following statement : ?'From what we know row of the iron-ore fields of the Province, we may feel that Ontario is assured of a great future as an iron-ore producing country. Judging from the extent of the territory over which the newly discovered ranges have been found, Ontario should in the not far distant future take her place as one of the chief iron producers in the world". In 1905, an official of the Department of Mines said: "In ten years Canada will have b:ecome a great metallurgical country. You will see an iron industry in this Dominion larger than in any country in the world. Canada will yet furnish the world with its iron supply. It will be the same with iron as with wheat. A decade from now Canada will outstrip all other countries in wheat growing. The production of iron at a cheaper rate than it can be made elsewhere will cause Canada to take a similar position as far as iron is concerned". In 1924, a former President of the Institute, in arguing his claim for inconceivable mineral wealth in this country, stated as a "certainty" that iron-ore deposits on the scale of the ones in Minnesota would be found "again and again" in the Canadian Precambrian. In 1930, a Minister of Mines announced that "The country surrounding Churchill holds large deposits of valuable iron and coal", and he stated that, at that place, 'We will have an industry in iron that will compare with Pittsburgh". These statements are definite promises, just as definite and important as the statement "I promise to pay" on a note, and they are not fulfilled by casually stating, as is the habit, that someday we will work our low-grade iron ores. Nor are they fulfilled by stating, as is often done, "Oh, So-and-So did not mean that ' . Due to their importance and to the prominent positions held by the men who made these statements, they were widely circulated throughout Canada. They were taken at their face value, and on the strength of them and many more of the same kind in regard to our other resources we have planned and built, at huge expense, provinces, governments, civil services, railways, and other equipment. The reserves that were to justify these expenditures have not appeared. There has not been a ton of iron ore mined in Canada for many years, and important commercial reserves are unknown. We have built the mill, but adequate ore is lacking.

The use of existing mine records in conjunction with an appropriate classification scheme can be used successfully to identify and characterize the composition of existing waste rock facilities where traditional approaches based on sampling may be impractical or costly. This paper describes an alternative approach used in an acid rock drainage investigation at a porphyry copper mine with numerous waste rock dumps of varying ages and composition. The approach integrated detailed lithologic and mineralogic information about the ore body and overburden materials with records of pit development and dispatch. A waste rock characterization matrix was developed for the site to meaningfully classify lithology and mineralogic composition of the waste rock. The approach resulted in a focused geochemical testing program and facilitated interpretation and application of the test results.

At its most basic level, minerals project management may be broken down into a series of logical chronological phases, described in this paper as: exploration, discovery; scoping and pre-feasibility; feasibility and approval; project financing and commissioning; operation; expansion and closure. Each phase has its own peculiarities and challenges, any one of which can potentially upset the forward progress of a minerals project.Reference is made to each of these project phases based on the authorÆs many years of first-hand experience, in an attempt to identify issues within the project management spectrum where additional caution may be warranted. Left un-addressed, these issues can cause undue delays in the project timeline, ultimately delaying approval at significant project cost.Finally, reference is made to the Mine ManagerÆs Handbook recently published by the AusIMM which is an excellent project management resource, considered to be very relevant for minerals treatment plant managers, whether the context be constructing, operating, expanding or shutting down.CITATION:Dunlop, J S, 2013. The construction of a deep structural slurry wall in a restricted city centre location is always a challenging prospect. However, when the city is London and the site is bounded on two sides by high level canals and a main traffic highway on the third, the challenges are greater than usual. The paper discusses the design considerations required by the principal contractor to accommodate a single high level lateral support, value-engineered, bottom-up construction technique and the impact this had on the design detailing and construction of the slurry wall panels. This paper discusses the logistical challenges successfully overcome during the construction of 65,000sq ft of 40inch thick, 80ft deep structural slurry wall in the City of London. The paper reviews the benefits gained from using the state-of-the-art hydraulic grab and rotator system. Technological advances in computer instrumentation and real time monitoring were utilised to assist the grab operators in consistently delivering deviational control during excavation better than 1:200. With working space always at a premium on construction sites, the need for high quality, pre-fabricated reinforcement cages has never been greater. This paper reviews the argument for off-site fabrication of reinforcement members.

Tracer gas sampling methods are useful for monitoring ventilation systems, especially in remote or inaccessible areas, and can be utilized for analysis of the ventilation system immediately following a mine emergency. However, the success of this technique is largely dependent on the accuracy of release and sampling methods. Analysis of sampling methods is crucial for rapid response and dependable results during emergencies. For the purpose of this study, four well-accepted sampling techniques currently used in the mining industry were compared using solid-phase microextraction (SPMe) fibers with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), an industry standard, as the tracer gas. Current sample collection techniques include plastic syringes, glass syringes, Tedlar bags and vacutainers. SPMe fibers are used in a variety of industries, from forensics to environmental sampling, and are a solventless method of sampling analytes. To analyze these sampling methods, samples were taken from a 0.01 % standard mixture of SF6 and nitrogen and analyzed using electron capture gas chromatography. A relative standard error of less than 10% validated results to compare the accuracy of various methods. The technical and practical issues surrounding each sampling method were also observed and discussed.

The Thor lake deposit is a world class resource of rare earth (REE) metals and minerals in Canada. Development work to optimize a REE mineral recovery process flow sheet is underway, however, given the ore mineralogy; the developed reagent scheme is relatively complex. As part of a research project, micro flotation tests were conducted on a feed sample in order to examine factors affecting stream partitioning. SEM-EDX was performed to evaluate variability in grain composition between streams (concentrate and tails) and TOF-SIMS surface analysis was used to determine statistically significant differences in surface species particularly related to potential activation (or depression) of the examined mineral phases. SEM-EDX analysis reveal that the concentrate has a significantly higher proportion of REE bearing grains (carbonates and phosphates) relative to the tail (almost none were identified). Spectral fingerprinting by TOF-SIMS has allowed for the identification of all reagent species investigated. Reagent signal intensity discrimination on test stream mineral surfaces was observed by the TOF-SIMS analysis using reagents at plant concentration levels. TOF-SIMS analysis confirmed that REE bearing grains reporting to the concentrate are doing so in response to collector attachment whereas grains reporting to the tail are doing so in response to a lack of collector and/or in combination with the presence of the depressant. The surface analysis of gangue phases reveal a similar reagent discrimination; the signal intensity of collector species was significantly higher on the concentrate samples relative to the tails while depressant species were significantly enriched on the surface of the gangue phases in the tail samples. A detailed evaluation of the surface species representing the various reagents used in flotation scheme revealed a distinct competitive relationship between two of the reagents. The surface analysis identified that when used in concurrently, there appears to be a negative feedback resulting in a significant reduction in loading for several of the collectors on grains reporting to the concentrate. May I, at the very outset of this second gathering, congratulate the Institute on the great progress that has been made in the interval. At the first meeting in New Zealand in the year 1903, I understand that less than 20 persons were present, and now in the large concourse before me I believe there are not fewer than 140 persons, while if every member of the Institute to-day where here there would be over 500 with usagreat change from a membership of only 250 in 1903. I feel deeply appreciative of the honour you have conferred upon me by electing me your President for the year 1911. In return for the compliment, may I ask you to believe that I shall do everythingin my power to further the interests of the Institute throughout the coming year.It is a great regret to me to realise that soon my work in New Zealand will be over. In the Bendigo district, with its large number of comparitively small leases worked by separate companies, we might naturally expect to find many different arrangements of winding machinery and, as a matter of fact, there are steam winches, old portable engines, single and duplex geared engines, twin engines on the first motion, and in one instance a single engine on the first motion, all employed for hauling purposes from depths of 1000 feet and over.It would be impossible in the compass of this paper to discuss at all fully the various arrangements of winding gear employed on the field the writer can simply refer to some of the more prominent features, in the hope that the information may prove of interest and benefit to the mining community. In criticising our machinery it must be remembered that when many of the plants in use at the present time were erected, they were not intended to wind from more than one third of the depths now common on the field; but so long as the machine could be made to haul a tank of water from the bottom of the shaft it has remained, the greater power required being obtained by increasing the piston speed and altering the gear wheels to suit. The consequence is, of course, that in some of our mines the speed of winding is painfully slow this feature, however, though certainly not consistent with modern ideas of economical mining, does not so seriously affect Bendigo as it would other fields, for the comparatively small quantity of stone to be raised from a given reef by some...

The aim of the present paper is to review the current technologies for arsenic removal in the copper metallurgical industry, and to show the progress made with some promising emerging strategies, involving the pre-treatment of copper-arsenic concentrates by selective flotation or by alkaline leaching with Na2S-NaOH solutions. The advantages of alkaline leaching are the selective dissolution of arsenic and antimony, the high extraction yield, and the practically nil loss of copper, which remains in the clean copper concentrate as a CuS residue. Alkaline ?cured? ? a procedure similar to ?acid-cured? in conventional leaching ? improves arsenic extraction and reagent consumption, making this an interesting technology for the treatment of high As-Sb concentrates. In light of recent advances on the selective flotation of enargite and tennantite, the importance of redox conditions to control the flotation/depression of enargite-tennantite from copper sulfides has been well established. However, problems of selectivity must still be solved. Additionally, the limitation imposed in some cases by the need to recover the molybdenum by-product must be considered. The application of selective flotation to obtain a high-arsenic or ?dirty? concentrate and its sub-sequent treatment by the alkaline leaching process is suggested.

O avanço tecnológico tem gerado demanda crescente por materiais que possam ser utilizados em alta temperatura e ambientes oxidantes, o que inclui ligas intermetálicas MR–Si–B (MR = metal refratário) com estruturas multifásicas. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a microdureza de ligas do sistema Hf–Si–B na seção isotérmica a 1600ºC, na região rica em Hf. Ligas Hf–Si–B foram fundidas com lâminas de Hf (min. 99,8%), Si (min. 99,998%) e B (min. 99,5%), em forno a arco e tratadas termicamente a 1600 ºC em atmosfera de argônio. As relações de fases nessas ligas foram identificadas por difração de raios-X e por contraste, em imagens obtidas via microscopia eletrônica de varredura no modo elétrons retroespalhados. As ligas tiveram sua dureza medida pelo método Vickers (microdureza) com cargas de 0,05 kgf e 0,2 kgf e tempo de aplicação de 20 s. Os resultados, obtidos da média aritmética das medições realizadas nas regiões heterogêneas de cada liga, mostraram uma dureza média de 11,08 GPa, com pequeno coeficiente de variação de 3,8%. Os boretos HfB2 (19,34 GPa) e HfB (11,76 GPa) apresentaram dureza mais elevada que os silicetos Hf2Si (8,57 GPa), Hf5Si3 (9,63 GPa), Hf3Si2 (11,66 GPa), Hf5Si4 (10,00 GPa), HfSi (10,02 GPa) e HfSi2 (8,61 GPa).

The Soil-Foundation-Structure-Interaction (SFSI) problem involves Kinematic Soil- Foundation Interaction occurring during large (cyclic and permanent) ground deformations as well as Inertial Foundation-Structure Interaction occurring during shaking all of which take place while the soil and possibly structural properties degrade with time. The design of the deep foundations for liquefaction induced lateral spread loads include estimation of passive pressure applied by the liquefied material as well as the amount of anticipated displacement. Coupled analyses for SFSI problems that account for liquefaction induced lateral spread and their interaction with the deep foundation system can be performed using sophisticated numerical modeling techniques based on finite element and/or finite difference methods using computer programs such as FLAC or OPENSEES. Such complete SFSI analyses are very tedious and expensive and not feasible for most projects. In 2011, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) released guidelines for foundation loading and deformation due to liquefaction induced lateral spreading. This simpler prescriptive approach combines empirical and analytical methods through decoupled analyses using computer programs such as LPILE and SLOPE-W together with liquefaction induced lateral spread estimates based on published empirical equations. Pile group effects and pile caps are accounted for using a concept of super-pile. In this paper, we discuss the solution of the same lateral spreading related SFSI problem using computer program CGI-DFSAP (CGI-Deep Foundation System Analysis Program) based on the strain wedge theory that can account for liquefaction, lateral spreading, pile groups, pile caps and nonlinear behavior of piles in a more coupled manner to analyze the foundation system under the lateral spread loadings. CGI-DFSAP can be used to analyze piles in sloping ground conditions as well as piles beneath the abutments near a free-face slope. We have included Strain Wedge Model (SWM) solutions using CGI-DFSAP of several field and laboratory case studies of lateral spreading related to pile foundations. Finally, we have also included the SWM solution of one of the Caltrans (2011) example problems.
