Giant gold deposits are considered products of crustal-scale systems. Reduced fluids stored in mid to lower crustal reservoirs were discharged into mid to upper crustal sites of deposition. Elements of the architecture include crustal-scale structures, reduced packages of rock and regional seals. Gas-rich aqueous fluids were common but non-aqueous fluids may have been significant in the deeper parts of the systems. Fluid fluxes in over pressured domains were maintained by porosity waves. Abnormal heat input from the mantle may not be required once the systems were perturbed. Fluid-mixing and hypogene enrichment were probably the most significant precipitation processes.

Axial pile performance can be rationally evaluated within an elastic continuum framework using field results from seismic piezocone tests (SCPTu). Adopting a versatile Randolph-type elastic pile model, the approach can be applied to either traditional top down loading using an anchored reaction beam or the newer Osterberg cell that simultaneously pushes the base and shaft in opposite directions. The axial load distribution within the shaft is also evaluated. For site-specific data at a given site, the SCPTu is an optimal means for collection of subsurface information because it combines penetrometer readings and downhole geophysics in one sounding. The results obtained are at opposite ends of the stress-strain-strength curves, specifically the peak strength for capacity interpretations and the small-strain stiffness (Emax) for evaluating the initial deformations. Axial pile capacity can be analyzed using both direct and indirect CPT methods. As such, the approach allows for a complete representation of the axial load-displacement-capacity curve for pile response. Case studies are presented for deep foundations situated in stiff clays at two national geotechnical test sites located in Houston and College Station, Texas, using top down loading, as well as a third case study of a drilled shaft in clay till loaded by O-cell in Alberta.

Jointed micropiles were investigated to support bridge foundations where shallow rock was present. In this application, micropiles would have some amount of unsupported length, and would be subject to nominal lateral loads. Five lateral load tests were conducted on micropiles to demonstrate the impact of casing joints and rock socket embedment on lateral behavior. Load tests were simulated with FB-Multipier, a hybrid-finite element program for analysis of deep foundations, for proper design of the loading apparatus and instrumentation. The micropile sections were 2 m (6.56 ft) long, 273 mm (10.75 in) in diameter, 13 mm (0.5 in) thick walled, with a 50-mm (2-in) long threaded joint. Micropiles were made of one to three casing sections and were embedded 0.3, 0.6, 1.5, or 3.0 m (1, 2, 5, or 10 ft) into rock. In each test, two identical micropiles were pulled together using a simple frame until the weaker pile failed. All micropiles were instrumented with inclinometer casings while two contained strain gages at 0.76 m (2.5 ft) intervals. Load and displacement were measured at the pile heads. Tests showed the embedment of 0.6 m, 1.5 m, and 3.0 m (2 ft, 5 ft and 10 ft) sufficiently carried lateral loads over 180 kN (20 tons). The piles embedded 0.3 m (1 ft) were not able to maintain lateral load. In general, all micropiles tested to failure exhibited a brittle failure mode where there is small lateral deflection followed by a sudden failure at the casing joint. This was demonstrated in three of the load tests. In most cases, the micropiles were stiffer and stronger in the load tests than originally predicted numerically. The final test, where piles were not loaded to failure, verified that embedding vibrating wire rebar strain meters in the grout captured the bending moment profile of the micropile. The results showed the maximum moment in this case being carried directly across the threaded joint as predicted by the preliminary models. The results of these tests were used to calibrate the FB-Multipier numerical model. Using a load test that included bending strain measurements for a match, the soil properties were adjusted to produce reasonable matches for all of the load tests.

In the grand scheme of things, the 9.5-t (21,000-lb) shipment of molybdenum concentrate that left Freeport-McMoRan?s Climax Mine site on May 10, 2012 was not unlike the thousands of others that have been hauled away from the site during the last century, except for the fact that this shipment marked the official rebirth of one of America?s greatest mines. For nearly two decades, 17 years to be exact, there was no production from the mine that was once the largest underground mine in the world and was so important to the Allies? effort during World War II that it was assigned the highest priority of any mine in the United States by the War Production Board. The economic recession in 1980 put an end to the mine?s success, and the Great Recession of 2008 nearly derailed the mine again. But, like the nearby town of Leadville, CO, the mine survived thanks to an investment of more than $700 million by Climax Molybdenum Co., a Freeport-McMoRan company, to bring the Climax Mine back into production.

The Golden Grove Project area is located 220 km (137 miles) east of Geraldton in Western Australia (Fig. 1). The project is a joint venture involving Amax Exploration (Australia) Inc. (Amax), Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. (EZ), and Esso Exploration & Production Australia Inc. (Esso), each with 31 116% interest, and Aztec Exploration Pty., Ltd. (Aztec), with a 3 1/2% carried and a 3% contributing interest. The venture covers two significant volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits and some 40 km (25 miles) of highly prospective Archean volcanics. During the course of the past 12 years (to 1983), all four companies were responsible for operating the project at one time or another and all influenced the discoveries. The Gossan Hill and Scuddles deposits are typical examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits associated with Archean explosive submarine acid to intermediate volcanic complexes. They are located in the northwesterly trending Yalgoo greenstone belt of the West Australian Archean Shield. Gossan Hill, located in 1972, is essentially a copper deposit with minor zinc lenses; to date, 97 diamond holes have delineated a geological resource* estimated to contain 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of of 3.4% Cu and 13 g/t (0.38 oz per ton) Ag in the main lenses with minor lenses totaling 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of 3.7% Cu and 17 g/t (0.49 oz per ton) Ag and 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st) grading 1.5% Pb, 14% Zn, and 87 g/t (2.8 oz per ton) Ag. Scuddles is a zinc-copper deposit with gold and silver credits. It *Resource estimate provided by Esso for inclusion in Aztec Exploration Pty. Ltd. 1982 Annual Report was discovered in 1979 and, to the end of 198 1, had been delineated with 42 diamond holes. On the basis of this drilling, a geological resource* of 26 Mt (28.7 million st) has been estimated in three coalescing lenses. The lenses comprise 7.5 Mt (8.3 million st) of 2.1 % Cu, 12 g/t (0.35 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.3 g/t (0.009 oz per ton) Au; 7.6 Mt (8.4 million st) of 0.4% Cu, 9.9% Zn, 73 g/t (2.3 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.7 g/t (0.02 oz per ton) Au; and 1 1.0 Mt (1 2.1 mil lion st) of 1.1 % Cu, 9.3% Zn, 8 1 g/t (2.6 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz per ton) Au. In 1995 I was asked to participate in a litigation matter between a corporation and its insurance carriers concerning insurance coverage for remedial costs at a large, environmentally contaminated closed-down former industrial facility. One of the buildings on this site became known to the lawyers representing the company as “the infamous Building 8”. This building housed millions of documents retrieved from various locations at the facility while it was being shut down. It became apparent that the facility management had no document destruction policy, and thus Building 8 contained internal memoranda, notes, copies of correspondence, permits, operating records, inventory records, and the like from fifty years of operation. Needless to say, some of these documents, all of which were subject to discovery by the insurance companies in the litigation, contained material that was less than helpful to the company’s case. Of course, there were also a few helpful documents, but the overall usefulness of these records was outweighed by the negative impact they had on the conduct of the litigation. A second example involves e-mail. Several years ago, acting on an anonymous complaint that we later discovered was made by a disgruntled former employee who had been fired, a small army of federal environmental investigators descended on a client’s operating facility and, armed with a search warrant, literally commandeered the facility’s EH&S department. The investigators impounded the computers of the EH&S personnel and extracted all of the data from the hard drives of those PCs, as well as all EH&S related files from the hard drives of several servers used by the facility. These computers contained many years’ worth of stored e-mails, draft letters and memoranda, and other documents that provided grist for a four and one-half year criminal grand jury investigation of the facility and its EH&S staff. Both of these companies would have benefited from following a rigorous, enforceable, corporate records policy. Here is a third problem. My client had, during the 1960s, made a brief, and unprofitable foray into the nuclear fuel processing business. It ultimately sold the subsidiary, and was forced to give the purchasing company a broad indemnity against future liability. As might be expected, years later the facility was found to have considerable soil and ground water contamination both by chlorinated solvents and low-level radioactive material. Several years into the remediation program, my client discovered a tractor-trailer load of files, apparently removed from the subject facility, sitting in a parked trailer in a company-owned lot 300 miles away from the facility, where they had been for nearly thirty years. These documents were not helpful to the client, but had to be reviewed, at considerable cost, by paralegals. Moreover, several of the boxes turned out to have been mildly radioactive, setting off a chain of health and safety issues that consumed tens of thousands of dollars of legal expenses before they were resolved. Today, formal, enforceable corporate records management programs have become an extremely important element of overall corporate management. What was for most of the last century little more than a low level warehousing function is now a critical, actively managed, operating function that affects every level of corporate management. The rapid assimilation into corporate culture of electronic document management and the prevalence of e-email as the primary means of internal communication have created records management complexities the likes of which were not even conceived of fifteen years ago. Record preservation and destruction are no longer matters that can be handled on an ad-hoc decision making basis. Because of regulatory requirements affecting various classes of documents and the litigation consequences of ad hoc retention and destruction of corporate business records, and the need to have the ability to quickly retrieve documents in either a litigation or business negotiation context, a set of records management norms have evolved over time that have become the core elements of virtually every corporate records program. Nowadays mining projects are seeking new versions of evaluation that are based on the flexibility in the project. Real option valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methods that provides a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variable movements. Most evaluation approaches simply assume that some variables are fixed, such as production rate, variable cost, fixed cost and lifetime of project. The first section of this paper reviews a comprehensive study of ROV in mining projects. The paper then introduces a new model that solves problems where previous methods lacked. The new method endeavours to find maximum mining project value by adding total cost as a function of production rate into ROV. The second section has been applied to a new model on the Century zinc mine in north-west Queensland, thus illustrating the future overview of that mine. The new version of ROV gave a significant positive value for the Century Mine, when the closure and reopening options where available throughout the life of the mine. Consequently, the new method evaluates real options to add value to mining projects, maximising projectÆs value, estimating cost function, optimising production rates and offers opportunities in projects to amplify gains or to mitigate losses.

The ore extraction rate and the incorporation of new areas are key operational parameters. In massive deposits mined by caving techniques they both control the cave back geometry, which is mostly responsible for the induced stress state around productive levels. Early detection of deviations from admissible geometries will prevent stability problems related to geomechanical hazards, helping to improve safety and working conditions and reduce the potential for lost reserves.This paper describes a mine planning tool currently in use at the El Teniente mine. This tool involves the control of the cave geometry based on rules that have been defined as a result of different studies and experience collected during the operational history of the mine.This mine planning strategy achieves an extractive mining process with lower risk than conventional planning methods, ensuring ore reserves extraction if followed as planned while reducing unexpected changes in mining sequences.CITATION:Cornejo, J, Pinochet, A and Caviedes, C, 2016. In constructing the NORAD Combat Operations Center, controlled blasting techniques were employed to achieve smooth walls and to avoid shattering the rock beyond excavation lines. Extraordinary measures were taken to stabilize the rock to permanently preserve the openings. Rock stabilization was accomplished by means of reinforced concrete and gunite linings, rock boltings, installation of chain-link fabric, and epoxy resin and cement grouting. A particular zone of weakness at a vital location was supported by exceptionally thick reinforced concrete lining, rock bolts, and cement grout.

"Compagnie Miniere Esperance operates a gold primary ore body. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity concentration generating tailings with remaining fine gold. Analyses of the tailings proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment.As lab tests proved the technical feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation, an on-site pilot operation has been carried out to assess the continuous circuit performances, define the best configuration and obtain enough data for the industrial circuit sizing.Data collected during the pilot campaign have been used for calibrating a process simulator built with the USIM™ PAC software. The simulator validated the feasibility of upgrading the existing plant, including the reprocessing of tailings to obtain a good fine gold recovery in a small amount of concentrate. A preliminary capital cost has been achieved to assess the flotation workshop profitability.INTRODUCTIONCompagnie Miniere Esperance (CME), a mining company based in French Guyana, operates a gold primary ore body in open pit. "The metamorphosed mineralized Archean Bourlamaque batholith, dated at 2710 +-54 Ma, is a homogeneous body, composed mainly of quartz diorite; it is cut by late dioritic, mafic and aplitic dykes, and contains metasomatized ultramafic xenoliths. A geochemical investigation confirms the calc-alkaline affinity of the batholith, and the REE profiles are similar (Lal Yb = 3.9 to 8.1) to those of the intermediate to felsic metavolcanic rocks at Val d'Or into which the batholith was intruded and to those of the calc-alkaline members of the Blake River Group at Rouyn.Gold distribution within the batholith is heterogeneous and anomalous. Although the background Au content of the batholith is estimated to be 3.2 ppb Au by RNAA , the estimated median gold content of the batholith is 10 pp b (with P84 =32 and PI 6=3.1 ppb), much higher than that of ""normal"" granites (I to 5 ppb A u). The gold mineralization exhibits a close relationship with shear zones (e.g. Belmoral Mine) or with diorite dykes (e.g. Sullivan, Perron and Courvan mines).The following sequence of geological events is proposed: (I) pretectonic emplacement of the batholith, which is cogenetic with its volcanic host rocks; (2) regional metam orphism and deformation with localized shearing; and (3) hydrothermal alteration and quartz veining. We conclude that: (1) the Bourlamaque batholith is a gold-enriched intrusion, and (2) the determination of average gold content may be an effective method f or distinguishing ""sterile"" intrusions from those with potentials for gold mineralization.RESUMELe batholite archéen minéralise de Bourlamaque, daté de 2710+-54 Ma, est une intrusion homogène, constituée principalement de diorite quartzique, qui a été recoupée par des dykes tardifs de diorite, d'aplite et de composition mafique. As part of an effort to decrease U.S. dependence on imports of critical and strategic metals, the Bureau of Mines investigated three leaching methods for extracting the base metals and recovering platinum-group metals (PGM) from matte prepared from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrates. Because of a limited supply of natural material, synthetic matte of composition similar to matte prepared from natural concentrates was used to devise the extraction sequences. The validity of the sequences was verified with matte prepared from Stillwater concentrates. In two-stage matte leaching, first-stage H2S04 leaching extracted 99 pct of the nickel and iron from the matte but negligible amounts of copper and PGM. Second-stage oxidative leaching with Fe2(S04)3 or FeC13 solubilized more than 98 pct of the copper and no precious metals. Sequential leaching, in which acid and oxidizing lixiviants were added sequentially to the matte without an intervening filtration step, extracted 99 pct of the Fe, Ni, and Cu. A roasting-leaching technique, in which the residue from first-stage leaching was roasted between 360° and 500° C before a second leaching with H2S04, solubilized 98 pct of the copper. The three leaching methods yielded high-grade PGM residues containing more than 98 pct of the PGM in the matte.

Mining and processing of minerals, metals, and fossil fuels can release selenium and arsenic into wastewaters. Both selenium and arsenic are difficult to remove to levels that meet current drinking water and discharge criteria. These metalloids can be used as electron acceptors by microorganisms transforming them back to reduced states, thus removing or stabilizing them. Bioremediation cost effectiveness will be discussed in terms of site information required, microbial populations, co-contaminants, pH, redox, and nutrients. Full-scale, economical ex situ and in situ biotreatments are possible and can produce 1,000’s of times less sludge than conventional precipitation technologies.

Shales and clays from Illinois were sampled, tested, and evaluated to determine feasibility of producing lightweight aggregate by rotary-kiln methods. Sampling procedures and the 1 ,,,y of the Pennsylvanian shale units are discussed. Chemical, X-ray spectrographic and X-ray petrographic analyses were run on the samples to determine if a correlation existed between chemical mineralogic composition and expansion. Preliminary expansion testing was conducted in a muffle furnace. Rotary-kiln tests were conducted in a 16- inch by 14-foot rotary kiln. The weight of the aggregate ranged from 27 to 59 pounds per cubic foot. Concrete cubes employing the aggregate were tested to determine the qualities of the concrete. Compressive strength of the concrete using the 7-bag of cement cement per cubic yard mix, after autoclave curing for 6 hours, ranged from 2,950 to 6,750 psi. No correlation was found between the chemical, X-ray spectrographic, and X-ray and petrographic analyses and expansion, Sixteen samples made suitable lightweight aggregates in the laboratory rotary kiln. The expansion temperature range of eight of the samples was extremely narrow, and difficulties would probably be encountered in processing these materials commercially.

The WMC Olympic Dam Operation in South Australia is an integrated site, involving brown fields exploration through to production of copper cathode, uranium oxide, gold and silver bullion. The Geology and Analytical Services (GAS) Department reflects this totality and, therefore, is perhaps a unique construct in the industry. It comprises Geology, the Metallurgical Laboratory and the Analytical Laboratory, offering a single point of contact in matters of metal discovery and tracking through mine design, production, beneficiation and final product certification. This structure promotes value adding by removing traditional barriers between groups that can deliver more, collectively, than as individual units. This approach to value adding by bringing disparate groups together is echoed in each of the three sections where enhancements in the traditional value adding activities have been delivered by multi-skilling and encouraging overlapping involvement.

"1. Reserve estimates have been made for eight coal beds in Monongalia County, W.Va., but only the Pittsburgh, Sewickley, and Upper Freeport beds are important at this time. The Pittsburgh, Sewickley, Waynesburg, and Upper Freeport beds contain the largest recoverable reserves.2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 3,526 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 3,294 mil¬lion tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed except the Pittsburgh were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.3. Recoverable reserves of coal have been estimated in beds 28 inches and more thick. This thickness is about the minimum now being mined by hand loading onto conveyors in the Appalachian region. The weighted average recovery for all beds in Monongalia County, as determined by this investigation, is 47.9 percent. This percentage is based on the total thickness of coal (less partings three-eighths inch thick or more) in the bed rather than on the thickness of the coal mined. Based on the weighted average percentage of recovery for all beds in Monongalia County, the recoverable reserves are estimated at 1,577 million tons as of January 1, 1954.4. Monongalia County coals of the major producing beds are of high-volatile a bituminous rank.5. The Pittsburgh and Lower Freeport beds in this county yield coal that can be used as metallurgical coal, especially when blended with low-volatile coals. The Lower Freeport coal is coked singly and in beehive ovens, and makes good metallurgical coke.INTRODUCTIONThe investigation to evaluate the reserves of coking coal was planned to cover three phases: (1) Estimation of known measured and indicated recoverable reserves of all coking coal; (2) study of methods of upgrading marginal coals through effective preparation; and (3) study of carbonizing properties of coals and coal blends not now widely used for metallurgical coke making."

In order for MSHA to require the use of a noise control, the control must be proven ?technologically feasible?. Technologically feasible controls must reduce a miner?s noise overexposure to the permissible exposure level (PEL) or achieve at least a 3 dBA reduction in the miner?s noise exposure. The miner?s total noise exposure should be examined from an occupational viewpoint and not solely on a machine or equipment basis. This examination requires a field evaluation of the occupation as opposed to an equipment test conducted in a laboratory. The operator of a Hilti TE MD20 LS electro-pneumatic drill realized a full shift noise exposure (TWA8) reduction exceeding 8 dBA as compared to when operating a Gardner Denver S83F pneumatic jackleg drill while installing an equal number of drill holes into the Idaho Springs Gneiss rock formation. However, the Hilti drill?s penetration rate was only 27% of that of the jackleg drill. Although the Hilti drill was proven to be technologically feasible as a noise control, its slower penetration rate would require its economic feasibility to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Environmental incidents involving mine tailings and waste rock inevitably become highly publicised and serve to damage the credibility of the entire industry. The recent serious incident involving a spill from a Romanian mine, was blamed for triggering æone of the worst environmental catastrophes in Eastern EuropeÆ. It is important to clearly demonstrate to the general public that these incidents are not representative of the industry as a whole. Where such incidents have occurred, the causes are generally related to poor design and/or construction, inadequate supervision and/or monitoring and maintenance, lack of independent expertise, inadequate risk identification and treatment and no provision to ensure that rehabilitation and long term management of the site occurs. Many people are unaware that these issues have been considered and provided for at the Martha Mine. Despite the fact that the first tailings storage facility has performed very well over fifteen years of operation, the long term safety and security of the tailings storage facilities continues to be questioned and debated by the public. The best way to address this is to provide quality information to enable a better understanding amongst the general public.

The mining sector, which has an important place in terms of raw material and energy supply, is referred as a sector with one of the highest fatal accidents in comparison with other sectors. In this century, where occupational health and safety awareness has increased, it is important to review the past accident statistics and to determine the current deficiencies by using the information in the inventory. In this study, the Malmquist total factor productivity index (MPI) has been utilized to investigate the changes in the work accidents occurring in the Western Lignite Corporation (Turkey), where underground and surface production methods are applied, and to determine the measures to be taken. According to the results obtained, both the decrease in production amount and the increase in the number of accidents caused inefficiencies during the period in concern due to the expected 10-year economic life of the mechanized system operating in the underground production panel that came to an end in 2007 and the flooding took place in early 2017. Compared with the underground operations, it has been determined that production can be carried out at the appropriate scale despite the heavy working conditions encountered due to the changing climatic conditions and the progress of production in the surface operations.

Following the discovery by CRA of gold at Mt Kare, and the subsequent 1988-90 gold rush, mechanised mining of the alluvial resource is now being carried by a company jointly owned by CRA (51%) and landowners of the area (49%). Mining is currently being carried out using small gravity processing plants fed by hydraulic excavators. Use of hydraulic mining techniques will be limited to over- coming difficulties related to the high clay content of the material and the soft nature of the bedrock. Current resource estimates suggest that the alluvials will have a mining life of three to four years. During this time, exploration of the hydrothermal gold mineralisation at Mt Kare will be carried out by a wholly-owned company of CRA. It is hoped that this will lead to establishment of an economic primary gold resource.
