Conditional simulation provides a model of the ore body that represents variability in the data. This can be used to determine the impact of various grade control and mining strategies. A number of transfer functions are discussed that assist in optimizing grade control sampling. The cost effectiveness of various drilling and trenching techniques are discussed. Modelling of the expected performance of a mill head grade sampler is investigated. Conclusions are drawn about the likely impact of various sampling techniques on the economic performance of an operation and about applying sampling theory to grade control sampling.

The objective of this article is to discuss the fundamentals for determining the value of a limestone reserve or operation. The general step-by-step procedure, while prudent, is subject to the various site-specific issues that influence the valuation calculation. The most common methods for determining fair market value of mining lands are: comparable sales, operational analysis, and royalty analysis. An overview of typical eastern limestone mines (both quarries and underground) is presented. Specifically, properties in West Virginia and Alabama are reviewed and the sample methodologies and valuation calculations are presented.

The thickness of the laminated beam modeled in this study is based on bridging potential and TDR measurements. The laminated beam stiffness is based on the effective stiffness of an equivalent transformed section. The maximum deflection of this near-surface laminated beam is compared with the maximum measured surface subsidence. The spreadsheet provides a rational technique to graphically display the character of the overburden and potentially allows prediction of a subsidence factor based on boring logs and the proposed mine plan. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines (Bureau), utilizes a commercially available computer spreadsheet program in combination with a modified version of Bieniawski's Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system to characterize the geology overlying high extraction coal mines. The spreadsheet program calculates a RMR for each bed based on the lithology, thickness, and engineering properties, which are determined from boring logs and laboratory tests. Once the RMR is calculated the spreadsheet has two major functions. First, the spreadsheet calculates values used to graphically represent the character of each individual bed in the overburden. It calculates an in situ deformation modulus using an empirical rela¬tionship between the modulus and the RMR and then uses this effective modulus along with additional parameters that are based on mine geometry to calculate the bending stiffness and bridging potential for each bed. Second, the spreadsheet creates a transformed section that allows groups of beds to be modeled as an elastic beam. It then calculates a bridging potential for the entire rock mass. The bridging potential of the rock mass is a single value that takes into account both the geology of the overburden and the geometry of the mine. It seems reasonable that there would be a strong correlation between the bridging potential, the overburden response to high extraction mining, and the subsidence ratio. The results presented in this paper focus on the relationship between the bridging potential of individual beds and the deformation measured using Time Domain Reflectometry (TOR). Subsurface displacements measured over seven high extraction coal mines in southern Illinois were correlated with the bed stiffness and bridging potential profiles. Based on these correlations it was evident that the process of caving and subsidence over these high extraction mines involved momentary bridging by individual beds or groups of beds and the ultimate development of a laminated beam near the surface.

Before getting into the subject of packaging and materials management, please permit me to introduce you to MICRO SWITCH. MICRO SWITCH, A Division of Honeywell Inc. is located in Freeport, Illinois. We manufacture and market thousands of types of precision snap-action electrical switches. Most of them are used as components by other manufacturers in industrial and commercial products. MICRO SWITCH also offers a broad line of industrial control devices including heavy- duty limit switches, relays, manual controls and proximity switches. Other product lines are solid state keyboards for the computer industry and high-performance d.c. motors used in computer related equipment. So you can see that we are a component manufacturer. With the exception of the keyboards, every one of our products would "fit comfortably into a breadbox." Some are so tiny that one could easily fit several thousand into a man's hat. In my position as supervisor-packaging. package design, and materials handling engineering, I am actively involved in package design projects, parts handling design projects, and numerous activities involving departmental layouts, storage facilities, and material handling equipment. Calcium carbonate is perhaps the most widely used mineral in the world. With total consumption of all calcium carbonate exceeding over 25 million tom per year, within this class of filler, a relatively smaller segment of precipitated calcium carbonates (PCC) is often misunderstood as a commodity product and bundled in the same category as ground calcium carbonate. However, each material has a distinctly digerent role and characteristics. Precipitated calcium carbonates are used to influence specific performance in a specific application whereas ground calcium carbonate is used primarily to reduce cost in many applications. In this paper, attempts are made to demonstrate the role of nano-fine-PCC in improving shear-thinning characteristics of common and specialized sealants and automotive underbody coating and how such "nano-particle" cal- cium carbonate properties can be exploited to process PVC plastics while reducing overall cost. We also review the role of precipitated calcium carbonate as "nano" material and why it must be viewed as a specialty additive.

"The US coal mining industry has suffered a recent decline in profits caused by a combination of decline in commodity demand and more restrictive government regulation, forcing coal mining companies to cease production in numerous mines. A 40% decrease in the total number of coal mines occurred from 1994 to 2000. The number of mines remained relatively constant until 2008 when a change of government sparked a series of new environmental regulations which have contributed to another 15% decrease from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, production has only decreased by 3%, increasing from 1994 to 2008, and then decreasing since 2008. However, this value is skewed by large increases in sub-bituminous coal production and decreases in other coal ranks. Several aspects assist in executive decisions on mine longevity and economic worth. Studies of open source mine data collected by mandated government surveys coupled with commodity history can be used to find relationships between mine closures and these elements, which include statistics on production tonnage, seam height, coal rank, etc. This paper looks at coal mining trends since 1994 by comparing mine, market, and regulation factors that may influence mine closure. INTRODUCTION The US coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history, and regulatory impact. TRENDS SINCE 1994 Each year, US coal mines are required to submit data on a wide variety of categories to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data includes administrative records, production values, and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the following figures."

Introduction The reclamation of mine/mill tailings areas is undertaken for a variety of objectives including safety, appearance, economical use of lands and forests and long term storage of a future resource. The establishing of criteria for these objectives at any site is a shared task of the government and mining company. Our attention in this paper is directed to uranium mine/ mill tailings as they are handled in the Canadian industry and in the unique Canadian climate. We focus our attention on the state of the art. Uranium is a ubiquitous mineral forming an average of 4 g per tonne of the Earth's crust. Ores are mined at about 500 g per tonne so that the residual content of uranium in tailings is comparable to average background levels. However, as in most mine/mill operations, the ore contains other minerals that become readily mobile after milling operations. Thus the main objective of tailings impoundment is the stability both physically and chemically of the mobile materials. Since the requirements for the operation and construction of tailings areas in Canada have changed considerably over the past decade, there exists a great many mine/mill tailings areas which while considered adequate in their day, would not meet modern criteria. However, most of these installations pose no concern or hazard to the public. The proximity of mine/mill development to inhabited land areas has necessitated more stringent modes of tailings operations and provisions for tailings site reclamation. The more important of these have been: 1) the prevention of dyke failure, with large liquid-solid outflows onto adjoining lands, and 2) the prevention of seepage from the tails of pollutants such as chlorides, sulphides, heavy metals and radionuclides. Uranium mill tailings are discharged as a slurry from the concentrator after the removal of generally only about 1000 g, or less, per tonne of uranium from the as-mined ore. As a consequence, a great volume of low level activity waste is generated. Once an ore body has been probed and outlined, and sufficient information has been collected to warrant further analysis, the important process of selecting the most appropriate method or methods for mining can begin. At this stage, the selection is preliminary only, serving as the basis for a project layout and feasibility study. Later, it may be found necessary to revise the details, but the basic principles for the ore extraction should remain a part of the final layout. With respect to the basic principles employed, relatively few mining methods are used today. For the purposes of this presentation, the principles are classified as follows: 1) For naturally supported stopes, the available methods are room-and-pillar mining and sublevel stoping. 2) For artificially supported stopes, the available methods are shrinkage stoping, cut-and-fill mining, square-set mining, and longwall mining. 3) For caving methods, the available techniques are sublevel caving and block caving. Due to the uniqueness of each ore deposit, the variations on each of these methods are nearly limitless. It is impossible to include even the major variations in this chapter; the goal of this chapter is to present the principles as a guide to the mining engineer in adapting the general methods to specific needs. The selection process described herein is intended to supply the techniques by which the candidate methods available for a given ore body can be reduced to one or two feasible approaches. The feasible approaches then can be evaluated in detail, and the particular modifications can be investigated. In describing costs and economic factors, all values herein are expressed in terms of 1978 US dollars.

This paper identifies the components of belt conveyor shifting force as a vertical force, Pv, a lateral force, Ph, and a longitudinal force, Pl. A method for estimating these forces is proposed that relates each of their values to the properties of the conveyor structure and rails, the shifting operation parameters, and other site-specific conditions. The effect of this force on the shifter behavior is analyzed, and guidelines are developed for selecting a suitable shifter. As well, other equipment requirements for the shifting operation are discussed.

Rock mass classification systems are core elements of tunneling and empirical mine design worldwide. The Bauxite division of S&B Industrial Minerals S.A. decided to implement a rock mass classification system in order to provide mining engineers and supervisors of the underground mines, with guidelines of stability performance and with a complementary tool for the selection of the appropriate tunnel support. The back analysis system employed is based on visual observation of especially selected underground mine sites, representative of all rock types. This fact combined with the failure or success of the already existing support system, constitute the fundamental part of the work undertaken. The paper is divided into three main parts. In the first part the classification methods of Q, RMR89 and GSI are presented and the advantages and disadvantages of each method in connection with underground mining are indicated. RMR89 and GSI are conclusively selected for use, the main criteria for the selection being, the simplicity in use and the competency of the support system suggested for each rock mass category. The second part points out the methodology for measurements, the practical difficulties encountered during this process and the guiding principles followed, in order to avoid these problems. In the third part, the final conclusion of this project is demonstrated and the different rock mass categories are presented with their relative support recommendations, as they were applied and tested in all phases of the bauxite mines? exploitation. The generated methodology is being implemented by the site mining engineers, for validation and potential improvement.

A large number and a wide variety of chemical reagents are used in flotation processes for wettability and Eh control, particle agglomeration/dispersion and bubble stability. A historical account of the use of flotation reagents through the years since flotation was introduced as a viable and economic process for the concentration of sulfide minerals is given and a review of old and modern postulates of their interaction with minerals is presented. Although the results of surface and colloid chemistry studies with well characterized mineral/flotation reagent systems have advanced our understanding of the role played by these chemicals in the flotation process, many questions remain unanswered. Moreover, new flotation reagents are needed to solve the challenge posed by the treatment of problematic-type ores and fuel deposits that have increasingly become the source of our raw and energy materials. Because of the depletion of high-grade and relatively easy-to-process ores, flotation scientists and engineers are confronted with finding more specific and selective flotation chemicals to effectively and economically concentrate minerals. The development of new flotation reagents is vital for cleaning fine coal and processing polysulfide, polymetallic ores, and mixed oxide/sulfide ores.

This paper deals with the heat flow problems in deep workings (depth greater than 1000 m in France). The approach benefitted from experience gathered in France and South Africa. Deep mines are located in the East of France (coal in Lorraine and potash in Alsace), where the geothermal gradient can reach 4 'C per 100 m (Virgin Rock Temperatures, VRT, around 50 'C). This paper is concerned with the following topics: method of studying the heat flow problem on a mine-wide basis, specific models for heat and moisture pick-up, interfacing of heat and ventilation calculations and a case history in the Lorraine collieries. The heat flow problem on a mine-wide basis is studied in a fashion similar to ventilation networks. Each branch is considered as a "black box" where the air picks up heat and moisture (or is cooled, in the case of an air-cooler). Each box is therefore modeled as a heat transfer unit, hence the calculation of outlet temperatures (wet- and dry-bulb) from the intake ones. The whole network can thus be computed as a sequence of boxes from the air intakes towards the outlets. The second section reviews a number of models used for the assessment of heat and moisture pick-up in the "boxes", with emphasis on stopes and development ends, which are particular to the mining method in use. Two types of stopes are considered: longwall (horizontal and inclined) and cut-and-fill (subvertical). Mechanized rock breaking and blasting can be accounted for. A particular attention is given to development ends, especially complex from the heat flow point of view (rock characteristics, wetness factors, etc.) and usually quite hot. These workings, which are critical in order to secure new production areas, are studied on an average basis as well as in extreme conditions. The calculation takes into account the history of rock temperatures. The interaction between ventilation and thermodynamic calculations is still under development. The idea consists of coupling ventilation calculations with the "box" models: the first step determines the direction of air flow, hence the sequence of the boxes; thereafter the calculations yield the effect of temperature and presssures on air flows. The final section reports on the validation of the whole approach against field data. It concerns several heat flow surveys aimed at checking the models for shafts, stopes and development ends. The accuracy of the method is found very satisfactory.

This paper will describe the development, testing, performance evaluation, and in particular, the utilization for a mining application of revolutionary new mini-disc cutters for use in micro-tunneling and small-and medium-diameter tunneling or mining. It will begin by describing the engineering, testing, and development of rock cutting technology in conjunction with the Rock Boring Laboratories of the Colorado School of Mines. During initial tests, the five-inch cutters were able to penetrate limestone and welded tuff with compressive strengths of 9,000 psi to 24,000 psi. High excavation rates at low thrust and power were achieved with considerably less cutter wear than all previously available conventional discs. Eventually, the discs-with their modified carbide-insert cutting rings, high-load capacity bearings and cantilevered mountings-were able to facilitate the rapid and cost-effective installation of micro-and small-diameter pipes and tunnels in large cobbles and even solid rock, with compressive strengths exceeding 30,000 psi. This paper will also discuss the further development of the machine's cutter head and discs to full-scale site use on a range of tunnel machine sizes and soil conditions, including rock, boulders, and soft ground. Potential mining applications include the installation of tunnels to pro-vide ventilation, emergency escape routes, water drainage, compressed air, electricity, and sand-fill.

The purpose of the panel's examination of coal mining research and development is to explore how the various groups that make up this research community might work together more efficiently and be more productive. The community, as defined here, includes federal and state governments, coal producers, manufacturers, unions, universities, and industry sponsored research organizations. The framework chosen for these discussions consists of brief presentations by the panel members on their views of the proper role and function of the group they represent. The panel members were also asked to highlight the economic, technical and institutional constraints that affect the performance of research and development and the use of the results. Following these presentations, a number of prepared questions will be discussed by the panel, and audience participation is invited. These questions were given several weeks ago to the panel members for their study. Before proceeding with the panel member reports, a brief review of the importance of R&D to the coal mining industry would be helpful to setting the stage for a constructive dialogue. It is appropriate to begin this review by mentioning that there is complete agreement among the research community that the major goals are: Improve health and safety Protect the environment Increase capital and labor productivity Increase resource recovery Since the basic functions of the academic, industrial and government sectors are different, we should expect that the research and development objectives and priorities, roles and responsibilities under each major goal will be different for each research group. The differences do not represent problem areas. However, problems will arise if the objectives are not properly interfaced at the appropriate time. The consequences of railing to understand the need for integrated programs will be the classic result, best described by the phrase --"a technical success but a commercial failure."

Respirable (PM-10) crystalline silica is regulated by the State of California as a carcinogen. The risk-management of this material by the State exemplifies the inherent problems in the development of regulations based on current risk-assessment practices. The influence of extremely conservative risk-assessment and risk-management can be expressed in economic impacts including the increased cost of production, reduced competition, increased prices, reduced employment and redistribution of income. This paper attempts to contrast theoretical risk- assessment and risk-management with current application using crystalline silica as an example. Based on health information pertaining to silica, the paper examines federal and State of California regulatory and public policy positions. Using current risk factors and empirical data for the Central Valley of California, the projected incidence of lung cancer in humans is examined. While such an analysis would project an extremely high incidence of lung cancer as well as silicosis, not a single case of either lung impairment has been recorded within the study area or throughout the world in the general population. This suggests that sound guidelines for the analysis of scientific information have given way to the assumption that virtually any information representing a substance as a carcinogen is to be considered valid with little or no qualification.

The US Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota have developed design and performance criteria for a personal diesel exhaust aerosol sampler for underground coal mines. These are based on the premise that size can be used to separate diesel exhaust aerosol, which is mostly submicron in size, from coal dust aerosol, which is mostly greater than a micron in size. The sampler has three stages: a respirable aerosol preclassifier, a 0.8- µm aerodynamic diameter inertial impactor to collect mineral dust and a final filter to collect the diesel aerosol. Using a sample flow rate of 2 L/min and gravimetric analysis to within 0.1 mg, the measure sub-0.8 µm diesel aerosol has an a-priori limit of detection of 0.3 mg/m3.

On July 7, 1971, noise regulations for underground coal mines were implemented under provisions set forth in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. These same regulations now also apply to coal mine surface facilities. In August 1971, in anticipation of these regulations, the Bureau of Mines, through the cooperation of the mine operators, conducted extensive noise surveys in three coal cleaning plants. The survey was conducted in an attempt to identify those occupations where exposures would exceed the proposed regulations.
