Solar ponding to crystdlize sodium chloride has been used for thousands of years.1 The systems used were inefficient and usually small compared to the large 25,000 acre pond areas seen today. It has only been in the last 25 years that any real effort has been applied to develop solar ponding technology. Many large solar pond systems have been constructed without much thought to efficient and optimum production rates. The recent high costs of labor, of equipment and of energy have forced producers to take a closer look at their solar pond systems in an attempt to squeeze out the highest possible yields. Other companies such as the Arab Potash Company, the Dead Sea Works, Texas Gulf (Moab, Utah) and San Francisco Salt Companies have no more land area in which to expand and therefore efficient ponds are essential. This paper is written to show how the subdivision of solar ponds can result in production increases of up to 20% and beyond.

A short review of the current practice and recent developments is followed by a description of a newly developed approach for the solution of the optimum ultimate pit limit problem. The new approach utilizes the network modeling of the problem for solution by maximum flow algorithm. The latest developments in the implementation of maximum flow algorithm present significant time and memory savings as compared to initial development due to Ford and Fulkerson. Results of a series of computational tests are presented to demonstrate how this approach performs as compared to the well-known Lerchs Grossman algorithm. It is also shown that the solution by the new method will automatically include several optimal solutions based on predetermined number of benches to be included in the analysis.

The Brunswick No. 12 Deposit is a large polymetallic massive sulphide deposit, occurring in Ordovician age rocks of the Tetagouche Group. Silver is contained within the sulphide zones and economically it is the second most important commodity produced. Brunswick is one of the largest silver producers in Canada. The distribution of silver within the mine is presented, with examples from various levels. The concentration of silver can be shown to be related to both stratigraphy and structure. The mineralogy of silver in mill products is also presented.

Phosphate rock is the primary source of phosphorus, an element necessary to all forms of life--plant, animal, and human. While phosphorus finds many uses in everyday life, it is an irreplaceable ingredient in all complete plant foods. With the present need for intensive farming, the fertility of the soil can be maintained only by external additions supplied by mines or other sources. A major consideration in any mining operation is to establish the economic and ecological impact of the development on the local population as well as the national interest. The Commodity Data Summaries, as published by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), is a ready reference concerning the importance of phosphate to the national and local interest. The summary of domestic and world pro¬duction is given in Table 1. During 19722 the demand for marketable phosphate rock exceeded the supply in the United States and the rest of the world. Domestic and world reserves are more than adequate to meet furture demands. Phosphate rock prices firmed and export prices increased, reflecting the change from oversupply to a shortage of phosphatic fertilizers. Demand is expected to exceed supply through 1973. New fertilizer plant capacity planned for 1973-74 will increase the production of phosphate rock by more than 5 million tons in the United States. Morocco and Spanish Sahara are scheduled to increase their production to 18 and 3 million tpy, respectively, within 2 to 3 years. The domestic phosphate rock production for 1972 was 40.8 million tons and 1973 was 42.1 million tons.' Industry, with government-supported programs, will emphasize restoration of mined land and solution of the colloidal slime disposal problem in Florida. The foregoing information comes by courtesy of The Division of Nonmetallic Minerals of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, January 1973. The summary gives a great deal of information but does not give a complete picture. There are many supporting industries which contrib¬ute to the area in which the mines are located. The figures shown in Table 1 deal with concentrates. To produce such concentrates many more tons of waste overburden and ore must be moved. Because of the competitive nature of the phosphate rock industry, data on concentration ratios not only are difficult to obtain but also are not for publication by companies. The concentration ratios vary from one mine to the next in Florida as well as in Tennessee and the western United States. To produce 42.4 million tons of phos¬phate rock in the United States required moving about 350 to 400 million tons of material. Domestic Industry. In 1972 some 26 firms and the Tennessee Valley Authority produced phosphate rock, with several firms produc¬ing from more than one mine. The distribution of marketable phos¬phate rock production was: Florida and North Carolina 82%; Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming 13%; and Missouri and Tennessee 5%. The value of this production was $223 million. The principal consuming classifications were: agriculture 75%, soaps and detergents 5%, plating and polishing 3%, animal feed supplements 4%, and miscellaneous applications 13%. Over 5,000 firms processed end-prod¬ucts for agricultural purposes. Uses of Phosphate Rock. The tendency in the United States has been to produce more phosphoric acid by the wet process, while the production of electric furnace phosphorus, triple superphosphate, and ordinary superphosphate has been on the decline. Exports of phosphate rock have been on the increase for several years and in 1971 reached 33% of total production. However, export sales of phos¬phate rock are expected to decline in the years ahead, both in total tons of sales and in percentage of production as domestic sales increase (see Table 2). The description and chemistry involved in the production of phos¬phate fertilizers is too complicated to be presented here. The Waggaman13 book is a very thorough reference on the subject involv¬ing production, utilization, and chemistry. The various operations generally have chemical plants near the dry plants or ship to associated chemical plants for further processing. Wet rock, dry rock, and ground dry rock of various grades are sold. In addition various grades of calcined phosphate rock, including defluorinated phosphate rock for animal food supplements, are pro¬duced. Various grades of phosphoric acid, superphosphate, triple suerphosphate, as well as diammonium phosphate, are produced. This paper refers to the new crushing and grinding process, which was invented by Professor Schönert (Ref.1), Clausthal, Germy (author of one of the papers presented at this meeting). The process is known as high pressure particle bed comminution or interparticle crushing. Several papers by Professor Schonert and his coworkers and by specialists of the companies producing the necessary equipment under license agreements already described fundamentals of the process, the equipment used, results of lab size and large scale tests and finally the first results of truly commercial operations (Ref .2 to 11). Therefore it should be sufficient to summarize the main facts here: - To a bed of bulk material a pressure of more than 50 MPa is applied. Comminution is achieved mainly by the pressure which one particle transfers to the other and not by squeezing single particles between the working surfaces of some crusher or grinding media.

Centrifugal modeling was used to evaluate reclamation schemes of; (a) flocculants, (b) sand/clay mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (d) capping with sand or sand/clay mix. Results suggest the hierarchy of effectiveness is: (d) capping, (b) s/c mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (a) flocculants. Comparisions between currently used large strain consolidation computer programs reveal no difference between piecewise linear or finite strain calculations. Correlations between numerical and centrifugal model predictions reveal excellent agreement on magnitudes; however, rate predictions require improvement in laboratory input data and centrifugal scaling relationships.

Predictive maintenance technologies including vibration analysis, tribology, infrared thermography, ultrasonic detection, and electrical measurements have been applied to large electric mining shovels. The predictive program was initiated on the P&H Model 2300 and 4100 electric shovels. The utilization of these technologies has shown the potential for improving electric mining shovel availability and minimizing maintenance costs. Predictive technologies provide the tools to assess machinery condition. Availability is enhanced by the condition based planning of component replacement. Maintenance costs are minimized by focusing resources through condition based prioritization.

Three dimensional photoelastic techniques have been developed which provide information on the state of stress at any point in a model investigated. This investigation utilizes these techniques to determine the stress distributions in the pillars and the roof of a room and pillar mine model. Castolite plastic was used for the construction of the model in which a stress pattern was developed by the stress freezing process. Analysis of the stress pattern was accomplished by use of data obtained by observing points in slices from the model with a polariscope and solving data obtained by' the shear-difference method. Slices through the centerline, edge of pillar and centerline of span were investigated. Results of this work provide information on the overall stress distribution on points of stress concentration in compression, shear and tension, show relative magnitude of stress throughout the model and indicate directions of the most important stress values. A generalized roof bolt pattern is developed for room and pillar mines based on the stress distribution. A digital computer was used in the reduction of data and proved to be extremely useful for investigation of this type.

As part of a cooperative effort between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input-from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphor-gypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates a thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), which is then oxidized using a catalyst to produce elemental sulfur. The paper summarizes the results of continuing laboratory studies using an activated carbon catalyst which was loaded with sulfur through oxidation of ammonium bisulfide solution. The extraction of the sulfur that forms in situ on the catalyst is a key area in the development of the sulfur recovery process. Two approaches for removing the sulfur are being investigated: 1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur, and 2) leaching the sulfur using liquid anhydrous ammonia. The research has shown that it is technically feasible to recover over 90% of the sulfur from the carbon by either volatilization or ammonia leaching. Locked-cycle testing has demonstrated that the carbon has the potential to be recycled after ammonia leaching.

In October, November and December, teachers at the National Science Teachers' Association (NSTA) area conventions were lured to visit the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) booth by the promise of free rocks, video tapes, and literature on earth science topics. Teachers were content to stand in lines that at times took as much as an hour and a half to progress through the exhibit. Adding to their interest was the opportunity to converse with people from the minerals industry who were staffing the booth. The MEC was formed by a group of associations and companies in the minerals industry. They felt the need to educate the public about the current-day minerals industry and how it affects everyone's life. The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (AIME) underwrote the major expenses of exhibit space and exhibitor services at all three conventions in 1997. SME members have been active in staffing and chairing the NSTA exhibit booth. But they represented only about one-third of the volunteers for the booth. Additional volunteers were drawn from local minerals companies, associations, interested teachers and other support groups. (See donors list on page 64.) In 1997, the conventions were held in Pittsburgh, PA, Denver, CO and Nashville, TN. The local SME GEM Committees chaired Pittsburgh and Denver and The Rogers Group Inc. supplied the chairperson in Nashville. Each exhibit relies on a local committee to plan and run the booth. Support is available from the GEM Projects Coordinator at SME headquarters. Usually the chair of the committee is drawn from the local SME membership. It is easy to see why the MEC booth is so popular. Free literature, videos, posters, workshop packets and rock specimens were handed out to about 5,500 science teachers at the three sites. Feedback from the attending teachers was overwhelmingly positive: "Who do we thank for these great materials?" Some of those great materials included Caterpillar's outstanding donation of Common Ground videos and teacher packets for Pittsburgh, Denver and Nashville for every teacher expected to attend. Placer Dome sent enough What's a Mine coloring books and It Comes from a Mine activity books for teachers at all three sites. Newmont supplied all teachers with an excellent poster describing gold processing. Women in Mining Education Foundation had plenty of its classroom activity handouts. The American Coal Foundation provided a list of its educational materials that are given out free to teachers who request them on school letterhead. The National Mining Association had its Facts About Minerals and Facts About Coal available. US Borax provided the funding to reproduce the NMA black and white posters that were published as inserts in Mining Voice magazine. In addition, each site had other materials chosen by the local committees to round out their selections. At each exhibit site, committees raise between $8,000 and $12,000 in cash donations from industry to support the high overhead of producing this exhibit. Usually, there are between 12 and 18 different rock specimens representing a range of mineral ores from aggregates to the metal ores. The committee arranged to have these donated (along with the freight charges to ship them to the site). Literature is also donated by the industry. It covers a diverse spectrum from basic information on rocks and minerals to posters, flow charts, videos and coloring books. Other donations include storage space before the event, haulage of items to the hall and door prizes. These exhibits could not have been staged without the network of SME Local Sections and the able chairs and committees at each site. At this time, credit should be given to their extensive donation of time and effort.

The Cuajone Concentrator of the Southern Peru Copper Corporation is located approximately 900 kilometers southeast of Lima, Peru, near the 500 year old town of Moquegua, in an area that has been occupied since antiquity. Since the plant was started in July, 1976, the throughput has steadily increased from 36,000 to 46,000 metric tons per day. The widely distributed molybdenite content of the ore body ranges from 0.02 to 0.04% MoS2. The molybdenite content of the copper concentrate has always been sufficient to justify operation of a byproduct molybdenite plant. During the first nine months of 1980, the average grade of the ore was 1.169% copper and 0.026% molybdenite.

This paper presents the results of laboratory and pilot plant investigations for the development of efficient methods of beneficiating hematite ores from the Krivoi Rog, Kursk Magnetic Anomoly, Olenogorsk, and other localities. The tests included gravity, magnetic (in a high intensity field), flota¬tion, and magnetizing roasting methods. It was possible to develop efficient beneficiation methods depending on the mineral composition of the ore and degree of dissemination of ore and gangue minerals. The paper shows the relationship between the iron silicate and quartz content of the ore and the technologic indices of the various beneficiation methods. Some of the conclusions based on these investigations and the technical and economic computations related to the cost of one ton of pig iron produced from concentrates obtained by the various beneficiation methods are: 1. If the hematite ore is not disseminated uniformly, it is expedient to use a combined gravity and flotation process. Ore particles up to 50 am. in size are beneficiated by gravity (heavy suspension, jigging, and others) and yield a lump concentrate. The middlings from this process are recrushed and floated; 2. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing small quantities (less than 5 percent) of iron silicates, are most effectively beneficiated by flotation. Anionic (sulphate soap, tall oil emulsion with various foam depressors) as well as cationic collectors may be used. Depending on the mineral and chemical composition of the ore, it is possible to obtain concentrates containing up to 65 percent iron with an extraction up to 94 percent; 3. Finely disseminated, mixed hematite-magnetite ores may be beneficiated by flotation or a magnetic separation-flotation process; 4. Finely disseminated hematite ores, containing large quantities of iron silicates and earthy hematite ores are most efficiently beneficiated by the magnetizing roasting method. This method will yield concentrates containing up to 68 percent iron with extractions up to 90 percent. Although beneficiation by the magnetizing roasting process is costly, it will nonetheless, when employed on this type of ore, yield the least expensive pig iron.

Silver contained in zinc calcines undergoes several phase changes as it proceeds through the leaching circuit of a roast-leach-electrowin zinc plant. In the present study, the flotation response of silver from leach residues prepared under a variety of carefully controlled operating conditions in the pilot plant has been examined. Flotation of neutral leach residue is shown to be technically viable and to merit consideration for those plants without a high acid leach circuit, but having significant silver values in the feed. Residue leach conditions must be kept slightly acidic to promote the formation of Ag2S, (Ag, CU)2S and Ag2S rims on residual unroasted sphalerite, while simultaneously avoiding the hydrolysis of soluble iron which depresses silver recovery and grade. Factors to be considered during integration of a flotation process into an electrolytic zinc plant are discussed.

Two key strategies for a new generation of mining are developing domestic raw material production and doing so in an environmentally responsible way, according to presenters at the 83rd annual meeting of the SME Minnesota Section in Duluth (the 71st annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium). From technical sessions detailing how to build com-munity support, to a short course on international perspectives in iron ore mining and processing, the two-day meeting emphasized the potential of Minnesota state deposits and the importance of maintaining productive community relations both locally and globally. The meeting of more than 300 mining industry professionals began on April 20 with a traditional convocation celebrating the values of northern Minnesota. The accompanying tradeshow, with a record 131 booths, showed the speed and vigor of the economic rebound. Keynote speaker Scott Anderson, vice president and senior economist at Wells Fargo, stated the prevailing mood of the conference: ?Wow, what a difference a year makes.? With metal prices and sales up and heading higher, he said, it was clear that the production-centered economic recovery is reaching the mining and the minerals industry. However, Anderson sounded a few notes of caution. Serious threats to economic stability remain, including the burgeoning national de?cit, high unemployment and the still out-of-control foreclosure crisis. Overall, he predicted a below-average recovery and stressed the importance of developing a long-term business strategy.

Evaluation and subsequent development of a quarry in east-central Missouri was based on a general but brief examination of outcrops and core from five (5) test holes. Neither core, outcrops, nor existing quarries in the general area gave any indication of potential major problems. In the third year of operation large areas of collapse rubble, consisting of green shale and large blocks of limestone and sandstone, were encountered. Their size and random distribution resulted in both blasting and quality control problems. By the fourth year of operation, production costs became prohibitive and the site was abandoned. Prior to dismantling the plant a geologic investigation, which included shallow seismic and resistivity surveys, was made of the unmined portion of the lease. The collapse dolines appear to be related to structure and predate development of the modern topography. Surface indications of these features are few. The seismic profiles were especially helpful in plotting their distribution. Geologic relationships and seismic data developed at this site are being related to similar suspect areas in Missouri and have been useful in their evaluation.

Recent re-classification of crystalline silica as a potential human carcinogen has resulted in a new limit of 0.1% free silica in bulk powdered minerals. Detection of silica at this level can be expected to severely challenge or exceed the capabilities of existing protocols for x-ray diffraction, the traditional method for free silica determination. Automated SEH-EOS analysis provides an attractive alternative method, with direct analysis of individual particles for the determination of the concentration of free silica, and a direct measurement of silica particle sizes. This paper will discuss automated SEH analytical procedures, sample preparation, and statistical considerations.

Mica mining in the United States is confined largely to pegmatites and schists in a few well-defined areas. The largest region extends from central Virginia southward through western North and South Carolina, northern Georgia, and east-central Alabama. 1, 2, 3 Whereas in western North Carolina these pegmatite dikes are weathered to only a shallow depth, they are deeply weathered in the Carolina Piedmont and in Georgia and Alabama. Particularly in Georgia and Alabama, mica is found in the decomposed slates and schists adjacent to the pegmatites, and in deeply weathered granites. Most flake mica is obtained as the major marketable product by crushing and milling pegmatites.4 To a lesser extent, mica is produced as a byproduct of feldspars and spodumene.6 Past research by the Bureau of Mines has developed two methods for mica flotation. One method utilizes acid-cationic flotation for recovery of mica." This method requires thorough desliming of the ore with consequent fine mica losses. The other method utilizes an alkaline-anionic-cationic process for recovering fine size mica from pegmatite ores after desliming sufficiently to remove clay materials but not so drastically as to remove the fine mica. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 The latter process has also been successfully applied to a micaceous schist ore from California.14 This report summarizes the results of these research studies. Both of the flotation processes developed by the Bureau of Mines have been adopted by the mica industry and are being commercially utilized separately and in combination for flotation of mica from weathered pegmatite ores.

Since start-up in 1985 the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170 g Au/tonne (5 oz Au/ton) flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processed have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes recent laboratory and pilot scale test work utilized in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73 tonne/day (80 ton/day) pressure oxidation and CIL facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338"F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

The nature of surface sites for the adsorption of gold from alkaline cyanide solutions has been investigated using samples of synthetic, highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). This HOPG material offers an idealized graphite structure enabling the independent study of the graphitic basal-plane sites and the edges, or defect sites, of the graphitic planes. Radiochemical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic experiments independently demonstrated that gold adsorption was much higher on the edges (defects) of the graphite planes than on the planes themselves. These results suggest that site-specific adsorption is prevalent in the adsorption of gold by graphitic carbons (including activated carbon, carbon black and graphite) and that most of the favored sites are at edge defects in the graphite crystal structure.
