The oil shales located in the Appalachian Basin cover an eight-state area of the eastern U. S., and are referred to as Devonian (black) shales. These shales have been exploited for their gas potential for several years. The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) has conducted research since 1972 on the production of shale oil from the Devonian shales, and this resulted in the development of the HYTORT process. This process demonstrated that the yield from the Eastern oil shales can be greater than the value indicated by the Fischer assay method. IGT estimates that 423 billion barrels (67.3 x 109 m3) of oil could be recoverd by HYTORT processing of surface-minable eastern U. S. shales. Recently American Syncrude Corporation and Southern Pacific Petroleum N. L. have proposed oil shale projects in Kentucky. This paper will describe the surface mining and retorting techniques that have been studied for exploitation of the Devonian shales, and enumerate the problems that have to be overcome before commercial production can be realized from these shales.

To evaluate the effects on groundwater of a proposed in-pit disposal operation at an east Texas lignite mine, the local geologic, hydrogeologic, and geochemical features were thoroughly characterized. Resultant data were used in a flow and transport model (SWIFT) to simulate migration of the ash leachate. Computer simulations indicate that the leachate plume will travel 61-152 meters from the disposal area in 100 years after resaturation of the spoils. A 61-meter buffer zone of mine spoils without ash will surround the disposal area. The proposed landfill operation received regulatory approval and is currently operating as a Class 2 non-hazardous landfill.

This paper discusses the role of the mineral-adapted acidiphilic microorganism Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in the beneficiation of arsenopyrite-containing multisulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite) and the bioremediation of the resulting arsenical waste water. It was found that adaptation to minerals alters the surface properties of the microorganism. Bacterial adaptation to arsenopyrite and controlled bacterial adhesion to mineral surfaces lead to selectivity in arsenopyrite separation. Bioremoval of arsenic ions (both arsenite and arsenate ions) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is also discussed. In recent years, a great deal of effort has been put into automating mining equipment with the goal of improving worker health and safety and increasing mine productivity. Significant progress has been made in automating mining equipment such as load-haul-dumps and drills in underground environments where global positioning systems are unavailable. This paper addresses automating the task of positioning the shuttle-car (SC) under the continuous-miner (CM) coaldischarge conveyor during cutting and loading operations. A stereo depth camera is mounted on the SC. Machine learning based algorithms are applied on the camera’s output to identify the CM discharge conveyor and segment the scene into various regions such as roof, ribs, and personnel. This information is used to plan the shuttle car path to the CM discharge conveyor. The approach currently uses a 1/6th scale continuous miner and shuttle car in an appropriately scaled mock mine

During the cyanide leaching process, gold and silver ores that come from the transition zones, which typically contains low levels of sulfide, may produce one or more of the following reduced sulfur species: sulfide ( HS−), polysulfides ( Sn 2−), thiocyanate ( SCN−), thiosulfate ( S2O3 2−), trithionate ( S3O6 2−), tetrathionate ( S4O6 2−), pentathionate ( S5O6 2−), hexathionate ( S6O6 2−). The actual speciation of the reduced sulfur species in the circuits will primarily depend on the redox potential, pH, cyanide levels, and existing sulfur species in recycled process water, as well as the presence of other reactive metal species. The development of an accurate analytical method for sulfur species in cyanide leaching units of gold ores where sulfur speciation occurs has an important role in explaining the metal recovery deviations. This study presents the speciation of sulfur species and the development of ion chromatography method to analyze reduced sulfur species thiocyanate ( SCN−), thiosulfate ( S2O3 2−), trithionate ( S3O6 2−), tetrathionate ( S4O6 2−) in cyanide leaching circuits for gold ores. The method developed has resulted in precise quantification of target sulfur species in leach solutions. Method development and validation results were illustrated on analytical graphs containing each species’ peak number, retention time (min), type, width (min), area (mAU*s), height (mAU), and area distribution (%) of the peak.

"One of the most common emissions from detonating explosives are nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are potentially deadly if inhaled. Lab studies estimate emission quantities, though great variation is shown based on site-specific conditions, and lab tests may not fully represent field results. Field VALUES (have not been measured due to the vast area affected. OSMRE recently promised to release a ruling regarding surface mine NOx production. Once the ruling is implemented, it may eventually be necessary to monitor site-specific NOx production from blasting. A small unmanned aerial vehicle system (sUAS) is able to carry a NOx gas monitor, rapidly travel to the blast location, and to follow resulting clouds of dust and emission gasses. This project will perform laboratory tests to expand on current estimations, determine an optimal method for collecting data, and evaluate the ability for this unique application of sUAS to assist in health risk assessment for mine employees and nearby communities. Additionally, large initial NOx concentrations do not necessarily correlate to unsafe conditions, and this project will be ground breaking in observance of surface blasting emission dispersion. The project is still in early phases at the time of submission for this paper (Nov 1, 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on summarizing background research related to the project and a description of the project plan. INTRODUCTION Nitrogen oxide gases (NOx) are common emission by products of surface mine blasting. These gases can potentially cause risk to human health and safety, both for mine workers and communities near the blast site. However, these emission quantities are largely unmeasured and no attempts have been made to relate these VALUES (to human health risk. The primary objectives of this project are to determine actual quantities of emission gases produced during surface blasting, to evaluate immediate and long-term risks to nearby people, communities, and ecosystems, to develop a system for mine employees to easily monitor emission and risk levels, and then provide guidelines for mitigating health risks based on a location’s emission results. BACKGROUND Current research regarding health risk produced by surface mine blasting NOx emissions is extremely lacking. Estimations have been made based on laboratory research, though these same test results show wide ranges of possible gas quantities produced based on site-specific conditions. Even if these estimations are accurate, no method has been created to relate gas quantity produced to human exposure concentrations. This paper describes the original planning which actually resulted in the opening of a new aggregate plant located in central New York State. This plant, which is now named the Skaneateles Plant of The General Crushed Stone Company is unique in that the plant itself is a departure not only in design but in concept of operation from the normal aggregate plant the company has operated in the past. Whether or not the concepts which resulted in the Skaneateles Plant are economically feasible remain to be proven by the next few years of operation. By way of background data about our company which will help set the stage for this presentation, we currently operate seventeen stone quarries in the states of New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. These quarries range in size from 200,000 tons per year to 1,500,000 tons per year with a total annual stone production of approximately 7,500,000 tons. We also produce about 1,250,000 tons of sand and gravel at six sand and gravel plants, 300,000 cubic yards of ready mix concrete, 1,500,000 tons of bituminous concrete, aglime and other minor construction materials. In many cases we are our own best customer consuming a large percentage of the total production of our own aggregates in our various ready mix and blacktop plants. Up to the concept of the Skaneateles Plant our operating facilities have been of the permanent type as opposed to the moveable or portable type plant. The steps involved in the case history of Skaneateles will begin with the basic economic requirements, market research, geologic surveys, land acquisition, zoning and financing and carry through to the final design and construction. We will attempt to show what some of the problems were, how we interpretted them and how we proceeded to solve them. The current results are apparent and can be analysed. The success of the total concepts of the Skaneateles Plant remains for future analysis.

A field inventory was made of the mineral, geologic, geothermal, and groundwater resources of three geologically recent lava fields in the desert of Oregon. The term "resource" was applied with care: a "resource" must have particular value or worth, although it need not be economically viable. The spectacular volcanic features of the area have particular scientific and general interest and thus constitute geologic resources. The mineral endowment, mostly occurrences of low unit value such as stone and cinders, in large part are not resources, due to market conditions, regulations, and other factors. These and other conclusions will be used by the Bureau of Land Management in its multiple land use planning process for the area.

This work describes the design, analysis, and comparison of discrete simulation and static spreadsheet models developed to compare the oreflow efficiency of two conveyor-based material handling systems; one approach with a conveyor stream in series and one with parallel conveyor streams. Analysis and comparison indicated that daily rates were significantly affected by random conveyor failures in both designs. The compound effect of random failures limited the effectiveness of long belt assemblies in series, while the parallel conveyor stream design partially alleviated this constraint. The static spreadsheet model predicted a lower average daily oreflow rate for the series conveyor stream design and a higher average daily oreflow rate for the design with parallel conveyor streams when compared to the discrete simulation results. These discrepancies were the product of model sensitivity to operational factors incorporated in the system and provided the opportunity to further use the discrete simulation models for trade-off comparisons and sensitivity breakdowns of mine operating practices and material handling system efficiencies in both the series and parallel belt stream designs

Although alumina constitutes about ii percent of the earth's crust, it is expensive to separate and purify for the production of aluminum with the exception off the alumina in bauxite. The United states has a variety of non-bauxite resources that could substitute for bauxite, including high alumina clays, alunite, dawsonite in oil shale, anorthosite, and nepheline syenite. Each of these resources are discussed from the standpoint of geology, geography, processing, potential recovery, and environmental problems. Potential by-products include silica from clays, potash and sulfuric acid from alunite, soda ash from dawsonite, and soda ash and potash from anorthosite and nepheline syenite.

"This research sought to facilitate improved stakeholder (community) analysis using discrete choice theory (DCT). The work considered 16 project attributes and four demographic factors. The discrete choice experiment was conducted in Salt Lake City, Utah to illustrate the usefulness of DCT in mining stakeholder analysis. The data was used in discrete choice modeling of individual preferences. The approach answers three important questions for enhanced stakeholder analysis: (1) What are the factors that affect individual preferences? (2) What is the effect of demographics on individual preferences? (3) What is the value of environmental and social impacts to individuals in the community? INTRODUCTION Stakeholder analysis is crucial for effective stakeholder engagement because it is important to identify and characterize stakeholders in order to effectively engage in dialogue with them. This is not only true for all stakeholders but true for characterizing the members of a particular stakeholder. The local community is usually the largest and most diverse single stakeholder group. Also, the local community is perhaps the most important stakeholder group. Thus, analysis of the local community is essential for project management. Conventional mining stakeholder analysis is a three-step process, which involves evaluating: (1) each stakeholder’s view of the project (positive, neutral, or negative); (2) how influential each stakeholder is (high, medium, or low); and (3) how they will be impacted by the project (high, medium, or low) (ICMM, 2012). The results of this evaluation are documented in a stakeholder analysis matrix (Table 1), which is used to classify the stakeholders into three groups: highly influential supporter of the project, neutral about the project, and highly influential opponent of the project. This process can be used to describe groups of stakeholders (e.g. community, non-governmental organizations, etc.) or individuals making up a particular stakeholder group (e.g. members of the local community)."

This report will be given in two sections. The first sec¬tion outlines techniques and equipment to form almond shaped fluorspar briquettes by means of briquet presses, and the second section outlines techniques of the balling disc. PART I - BRIQUET PRESSES Fluorspar has been briquetted for a number of years and the so called "peach pit" briquet is known to many steelmen. Present production is estimated at over 100,000 tons annually. Slide 1 shows an assortment of various sizes and shapes of briquettes. It is possible to form fluorspar into almost any configuration of briquet. For safety on the melting floor, pillow type briquets are preferred. Ease of mechanical handling and durability of the product are facil¬itated by an almond shape. The dimensions of the almond can vary from 1-in. to 1-1/2-in. in length, from 13/16-in. to 1-in. in width and from 1/2-in. to 1-in. in thickness. The type of equipment to pro¬duce almond shaped fluorspar briquettes is shown in Slide 2. Here we have a Komarek-Greaves and Company 300 ton briquettor equipped with almond rolls. This machine is capable of producing fluorspar briquettes at a rats of 30 tons per hour with power consumption of 35 hp per ton par hour.

Large-opening underground stone mines pose significant ground control challenges, including the risk of massive pillar collapses. These collapses can result in dangerous air blasts characterized by tremendous force and high velocity. Estimating the velocity of these air blasts proves challenging due to the absence of accurate air velocity instruments near the mine portals. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel approach that leverages closed-circuit television camera footage from the mine. Specifically, it employs the optical flow algorithm implemented in Python to estimate the velocity of the air blasts, providing a valuable tool for assessing and mitigating risks in such mining environments.

An economic analysis for evaluating coal preparation plants in the Appalachian Region is presented. A complete coal preparation plant which includes multi-streams and/or multi-stages coal cleaning circuits, complete closed water circuits, environmentally acceptable refuse disposal and reclamation systems is used to determine the capital and operating costs. The plant is capable of producing metallurgical grade clean coal or deep cleaned steam grade coal for future power generating plants use. Utilizing a profit maximization as a decision criterion, an optimal yield, and optimal coal clean¬ing circuits, closed water circuits, and disposal and reclamation systems for a given coal characteristic may be selected among the process alternatives by using a process simulation-economic model of the coal preparation plant. A deterministic analysis is used to calculate the discounted-cash-flow interest rate of return (DCFIROR) and project the selling prices, and determine the Return on Investment (ROI) for the cases of 32.65% and 52.74% plant utilization with producing two cleaned products. Sensitivity analyses are performed to quantify the effect of total capital investment, operating cost, run-of-mine cost and yield on an economic criterion-ROI and selling prices. A probabilistic evaluation using the Monte Carlo simulation technique is further made to quantify the risk involved in obtaining the desired profit levels. The results of the economic analysis for a given coal preparation plant configuration and characteristics of raw coal indicates that the selling prices of producing two cleaned products are greatly affected by the change in percent of plant utilization (production schedule), yield, and run-of-mine cost, and total capital cost. The sensitivity analysis also shows that the total capital investments has a three times greater effect on required selling prices than operating costs. The risk analysis shown that the overall economics look very attractive with current coal sale prices and 52.74% plant utilization.

"The development of fracture zones in surrounding rock mass has significant impact on the stability of underground mine roadways. Detection of the fracture zones is of compelling importance for maintaining roadway stability as well as for safe and speedy excavation of the roadways. This paper presents a study conducted at Dong Bao Wei underground coal mine, where the roadways were developed in diabase rock mass. The roadways suffered severe damages, including sloughing and excessive floor heaving. The borehole imaging technique was applied in the study to observe and detect fracture zone development surrounding the roadway openings. Based on the borehole imaging studies, new roadway support systems were proposed to improve the stability. INTRODUCTION At the Dong Bao Wei Coal Mine three main roadways of the west wing were excavated. The three roadways had semicircle arch cross sections and were at a depth of 650 meters, each being about 750 meters in length. The roadways were driven through a section of thick diabase intrusion, which was softened by water with reduced strength and may turn into powder form under weathering. Site investigation indicated that the roadways in diabase intrusion zone were badly damaged due to severe deformation, and very serious roadway sidewall sloughing and spalling accompanied by severe floor heave often occurred.(Figures 1 and 2) In order to ensure the normal use of the roadway, undercuts were excavated. However, this operation seriously affected the roadway construction progress and increased the amount of roadway support operations as well as the roadway maintenance costs. Furthermore, a roof fall accident occurred in nearby drilling site. The investigation indicated insufficient support provided for the roadways which imposed significant safety hazards and would have serious impact to mining production and subsequent mining activities.The support of the main roadways is a critical task and is the focus of the underground opening excavation work at the mine, since more than 40 years of service life is required from these main roadways. For these roadways, large cross sections with high degree of stability and minimal amount of deformation should be maintained. Therefore, providing sufficient and appropriate roadway supports is of significant importance to the coal mine. In this paper, in order to optimize the roadway supporting system, studies were carried out on the geological structures, lithological characters, roof bolt anchoring features and suitable anchoring layers. The studies were aimed at ensuring the stability of mine roadways, reducing the roadway maintenance costs and providing a safe mine passageway for orderly production and progressive development of the mine"

The present fuel situation indicates that, at least for the next 20 to 30 years, the burning of coal will be a main source of energy. All coal contains sulfur, which is converted to sulfur dioxide during combustion. The concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in the resulting flue gas, for most coals, would exceed the limits established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Therefore, the sulfur must either be removed from the coal prior to its burning, or be collected from the stack gas before it reaches the atmosphere. There is currently a large amount of research devoted to methods of removing the sulfur from the coal before burning, or during combustion in fluidized beds with materials which trap the sulfur in the solid residue. The commercialization of these processes, however, is not expected in the near future. Flue gas desulfurization appears to be the best near term prospect of fulfilling current air quality control regulations. The lime/limestone wet-scrubbing methods are the most advanced flue gas desulfurization processes and will account for the majority of sulfur removal systems in electric power generation. There are currently at least 23 full-scale systems existing or under construction and 17 of these will use the lime or limestone wet-scrubbing process. (1)

In November 1980 a combined airborne electro-magnetic (INPUT.) and magnetometer survey was conducted by Questor Surveys Limited in the State Line Area, Colorado-Wyoming. The survey was the result of discussions over a prolonged period between the authors and various investigators of the State kimberlite occurrences. As a result of these discussions and literature studies, it was decided that airborne geophysical methods would be potentially useful in the exploration for new kimberlite occurrences. The survey was designed by Paterson, Grant and Watson Limited and conducted by Questor Surveys Limited over an area in which more than 15 kimberlite bodies were known and on some of which ground geophysical surveys had been conducted. The survey was designed primarily to determine the airborne electromagnetic and magnetic responses of the known occurrences and to deter- mine whether these responses would be detectable under similar conditions in other parts of the State Line District and elsewhere.

Energold Drilling Corp. is a leading specialty drilling company servicing the mineral and energy sectors in the Americas, Africa and Asia. Energold specializes in mineral exploration in remote locations with limited infrastructure. Such locations require the smallest footprint possible going in, leaving as little or no evidence on their way out. Energold?s rigs can be transported by helicopter or manually on footpaths as narrow as 1 m (3.3 ft). They set up quickly and then are struck and packed out, with any sign of their presence quickly disappearing behind them. Energold has teamed up with Atlas Copco and its team of engineers in North Bay, Ontario to design small rigs capable of drilling to a variety of depths, as required for each project.

LIX63 in combination with DNNS selectively extracts nickel and/or cobalt from acidic leach liquors with pH values as low as 1.0. Nickel/cobalt and cobalt/nickel selectivities are achieved by varying the relative concentrations of LIX63 and DNNS. Increasing LIX63 concentration retards both extraction and strip-ping rates while DNNS has the opposite effect. Slope analyses of equilibrium data indicate that both LIX63 and DNNS are present in the extracted complexes. Examples of possible flowsheets are presented.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of fluorspar from 35 domestic and 50 foreign, mines and deposits in 13 countries. Only 6 domestic properties are considered to be economic reserves, as 29 domestic deposits were found to have an average total cost of production that was uneconomical at a breakeven (0 pct) DCFROR. The 50 foreign properties evaluated were selected to represent at least 85 pct of the known demonstrated fluorspar resources located in market economy countries and China. All evaluated foreign operations were found to be economic to marginally economic in January 1984 dollars. World demonstrated ore reserves of 344 million metric tons (mt) containing 123 million mt of CaF2 were evaluated for the 56 operations. Average total costs needed to cover all costs over the life of each operation were determined for all recoverable fluorspar products. Comparisons of mining, beneficiation, and transportation costs per mt of fluorspar concentrate illustrate advantages between countries. Of the three largest producing countries, China, with its high-grade, low-cost operations had the lowest weighted average total cost of production ($38/mt concentrate). Mexico was next at $54/mt concentrate, and South Africa needed an average of $90/mt of concentrate to cover all costs of production for its low grade deposits.
