The expansion in gold production in the Carlin 'Trend over the last few years has been one of staggering proportion. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the Mine Engineering group at Newmont Gold. This paper discusses the organizational changes implemented to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems and how the Newmont Gold Mine Engineering group dealt with these problems. Specially developed computer software and their applications will be explained. Improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves, and in scheduling the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities, as well as ore control procedures are presented. Current mine engineering practices are discussed.

Many attempts have been made during the last forty years to evaluate the performance of gravity separation equipment, that is, the effectiveness with which light and heavy particles are separated. The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris (1950) by Cerchar. The methods suggested by the Conference were accepted and very widely used in the last 25 years. This paper discusses an improved method of evaluation in the light of the now accepted standard presentation. The float and sink analysis of the product is presented on a Gaussian distribution curve, resulting in an easier visualization of the inherent difficulties of separation. The ogives of the distribution curve are then plotted, giving a quantitative measure of the deviation from perfect separation as an error distance instead of an error area. Illustrations of the new method are given both for gravel and for coal preparation, but the concept is valid and applicable to other types of minerals which are separated by gravity methods.

The Meikle Mine is located in the northeastern part of Nevada in the gold-rich Carlin Trend. First discovered in 1989, Meikle is being developed into a 2.2-kt/d (2,500-stpd) underground mine that will open during the second half of 1996. Work has already been completed on the mine’s cooling plant, a necessary item due to the high rock temperature and the hot ground water. In North American mines, there has been little need for refrigerated cooling. Therefore, Barrick needed to draw on experience from elsewhere in the world — particularly South Africa — to meet these requirements. The history of cooling mines using mechanical refrigeration dates back to the 1920s at Morro Velho in Brazil and 1936 at Ooregum in India (Dobson,1940 and Biccard, 1946). From 1940 to 1960, several cooling plants were installed on the deep level gold mines on the Witwatersrand in South Africa. These were followed by similar installations on the mines in the Klerksdorp, Welkom, Evander, Rustenburg and Thabazimbi areas. The first mine cooling plant in Germany was built during 1976.

Bentonite Corporation decided to pursue ISO-9002 Registration for our bentonite production for many reasons. We wanted to improve our current Quality System to encompass all business aspects, not just Quality Assurance. We wanted this system to build supplier/customer confidence and provide our customers with all the services that they needed for their business functions: such as Quality Assurance for their needs; appropriate shipping and delivery; appropriate billing; and appropriate sales, technical and management support of our product. These objectives of our Quality System are addressed by the ISO 9000 clauses and requirements. There were additional reasons and expectations for implementing an ISO 9000 Quality System. ISO 9000 registration would develop and aid international sales since the ISO system is a basic requirement in many parts of the world such as Europe and the Far East. It would bring acceptance of bentonite products by new customers and markets Another objective was to develop better trained employees. We hoped that the ISO Quality System would help us reduce costly non-conformances and reduce overall production and operating costs. We hoped to achieve ISO 900 registration before our major customers required it. For example, our major market is use of bentonite as a binder in foundry mold sand systems. The foundries in North America primarily service the automobile manufacturers who have individual Quality System requirements that are being merged with ISO 9000 Standards. As the foundries addressed the automobile manufacturer?s needs, Bentonite Corporation received numerous inquiries and surveys of our Quality System and its conformance with ISO 9000 Standards. Eventually, ISO 9000 Registration will become a requirement to directly or indirectly service this market.

I have been asked to give you the National Coal Association's (NCA) view of the future of the coal industry. However, before discussing the outlook for the future I would like to set the stage by taking a brief look at how the industry has changed over the last decade. In 1977 the coal industry was in the midst of a period of steady growth. Although most of the gains in the early and mid 1970's occurred in the west, the industry was still predominately eastern, with eastern production accounting for 76 percent of the 697 million total tons produced in 1977. The labor force was nearing a high - at over 220,000 workers, and the number of active mines was also at a decade high of over 6,000. Productivity on the other hand was at a low. The average miner produced 1.80 tons per hour, and labor relations were also at a low point. Projections for coal's future were very optimistic, mainly because of the unprecedented growth in coal use by the utility industry. In 1977 the 477 million tons of utility coal accounted for 68 percent of U.S. coal production, and the utility industry planned on 129,000 MW of new coal-fired capacity over the next decade. Consumption of metallurgical coal at coke plants was the second largest market at 78 million tons; the industrial and residential market consumed 70 million tons and exports were at 54 million tons. But in retrospect, a lot was happening in 1977 that signalled many changes in the coal industry: - Amendments to the Clean Air Act were passed, which required that utilities take an entirely different approach to meeting New Source Performance Standards at new plants, and required that standards be set for industrial boilers as well; - the Surface Mining and Reclamation Act became law; -electrical generation, despite the optimistic forecasts, was nearing the end of a period of close to five percent annual growth; -1977 ended and 1978 began with the longest coal strike in U.S. history. -crude oil imports in the U.S. reached an all time high as did both total consumption of petroleum products in the U.S. and oil consumption at utilities. The high level of oil imports set the stage for the oil price increases of 1979 and 1980 which resulted in an immediate increase in demand for coal, not only in the United States, but world wide. Labor strikes in Australia and Poland sent foreign buyers to the U.S. literally in droves, and quickly made the U.S. a force in the world steam coal market. The U.S. coal and transportation industries responded to this overwhelming potential demand for coal. In a very short time, the capability had been developed to mine and transport the 1.2 billion tons of coal that forecasters said would be needed by the mid 1980's. The study investigates the segregation of iron and titanium in iron sand concentrate pellets reduced using coal under an isothermal-temperature gradient profile. The results show that metallic iron migrates to the surface while titanium and other oxides move to the center of the pellet. The study provides insights into the reduction process and the behavior of iron and titanium during heat treatment.

The continuous need for infrastructure expansion forces the mining industry to develop underground structures into more sensitive and violent environments. When underground excavation enters into deep and high stress rock conditions, geotechnical designers find themselves faced with the difficult task of selecting a rock support system that will meet today's stringent requirements. Whatever support system is chosen, it is mandatory that potential rock movement be controlled. All this has intensified the development of safety systems and new, unique solutions which can enable construction companies to go both, further and deeper, without reducing the level of safety. To address these needs, Atlas Copco developed the Roofex® bolt, specifically designed to withstand large static and dynamic deformations under prespecified load conditions. The Roofex Rock Bolt acts as stiff support up to a designable load level before the sliding effect of the mechanical frictional system is triggered and allows highly controlled rock mass movement without loosing the support function.

This paper summarizes and evaluates data on mine subsidence ground movements and associated damage for houses in Illinois. Based on the data collected, the response of homes to subsidence ground movements is expressed in terms of repair costs. A damage criteria is then proposed that relates the ground movements and damage levels. The data were collected as part of a comprehen¬sive study performed for the Illinois Abandoned ?Lined Lands Reclamation Council, A -M-RC, by the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Illinois, and probably will be published in late 1934 by the council. The study concentrated its efforts on surface ground movements and the effects to houses over abandoned room and pillar mines. The resultant surface subsidences are commonly dish or bowl shaped and are termed sags. Method of Analysis The steps in analysis used to arrive at the proposed damage criteria are: 1. Canvas and rap subsidence damage in houses, 2. Assess the associated ground movements, 3. Estimate the damage repair cost, 4. Develop a damage/repair level classifica¬tion, 5. Correlate the associated ground movement, damage/repair level and home construction type, 6. Propose a damage criteria.

In this work, the selective reduction of lateritic nickel ore was carried out using sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, and sodium chloride as additives. The 5 wt% of anthracite coal, which contains 60.35% of fixed carbon and 1.9% of sulfur, was used as a reductant. All raw materials were mixed homogenously prior to the pelletization process into 10–15 mm of diameter. The reduction process was carried out to 50 g of pellets at 950 °C, 1050 °C, and 1150 °C for 60 min in a muffle furnace at atmospheric pressure. It continued with a wet magnetic separation process to separate ferronickel (concentrates) and impurities (tailings). Iron and nickel grade analysis was performed using XRF, while phase transformation and microstructure were analyzed with XRD and SEM–EDS. The results showed that the sodium sulfate was superior, resulting in the highest nickel grade in concentrate, i.e., 15.06%. The sulfidation mechanism, which could inhibit the metallization of iron, effectively increased the nickel grade in concentrate than decomposition of carbonate and chloridization process. The sulfur content in the reductant also influenced the selective reduction process. It promotes more sulfidation of iron, thus increasing the nickel grade in concentrate.

INTRODUCTION The application of oil field technology to large diameter hole drilling is beginning to offer a cost effective alternative to conventional shaft sinking methods. The drilling of ventilation and small production shafts are, of course, not new. The major constraint to the drilling of large diameter production shafts has been the inability to drill holes large enough and straight enough to install and operate relatively high volume hoisting equipment. This paper discusses recent advancements in drilling technology as applied specifically to large diameter holes for use in the mining industry. The paper emphasizes the geotechnical and hydrologic considerations in assessing site conditions and their application to drilled shaft technology. The authors worked together on a recent feasibility study for a 6 m (20 ft.) diameter 975 m (3,200 ft.) drilled shaft in New Mexico. Their individual experience in drilling and geotechnical investigations related to shaft sinking is world wide. Currently, virtually all new electric power generation systems under construction are designed with natural gas as the primary fuel. Factors driving these construction decisions involve sustained low prices for natural gas, environ-mental (and consequent regulatory) risks associated with the use of coal for power generation, and relatively high costs of construction for conventional coal-fired power plants. Despite the unarguable abundance of coal in the US. and worldwide, a fundamental question arises: What will be the role of coal in electric power generation in the 21st century? Congress, recognizing the vital and strategic importance of preserving the coal option for electric power generation, authorized the Clean Coal Technology Program. This pro-gram, with original funding in excess of $2,500 million, is intended to promote the demonstration and commercialization of a new generation of clean, efficient coal-based energy technologies through collaboration and partnering with private industry. The two technologies being demonstrated under this program which are the key to the continued use of this nation's huge coal reserves are coal gasification and the pressurized fluid bed. Either or both of these technologies, coupled with a combined cycle will pro-vide the continuing future coal option, while responding to increasingly more restrictive environmental standards. Recent Congressional budget-cutting efforts, however, could threaten the effectiveness of that model program, and ultimately other subsequent government-industry collaboration.

Manufacture and mixing of flotation reagents at the mill site provides an economic and convenient method of maintaining a continuous and fresh supply of reagents for concentrator operations. Kennecott Copper Corporation has designed and built a Reagent Mixing Facility which incorporates new ideas in construction and fail-safe operation at its Nevada Mines Division concentrator. Highly sophisticated automation and instrumentation techniques are combined with safety procedures and equipment that meet and exceed all Federal and State safety requirements. Installation of the facility has minimized hazardous working conditions for the operator, isolated reagent preparation from production personnel and equipment, and reduced the time required for reagent preparation from three shifts to one shift per day.

The advantage of using ammonium phosphate salt as flux is the selective precipitation of chromium(III) compounds, which are considered nontoxic and environmentally friendly. The technique in this paper is determined to have potential to be applied in the metallurgical industry, where it can be used in the beneficiation of chromite mineral ores. The higher chromium contents of chromite ores often require furnaces to run at higher temperatures of above 1,300 °C, which can cause shutdown of the ore processing plant and accumulation of the sticky chrome compounds — including toxic chromium(VI) waste — which are generated as byproducts. The other advantage of this technique is its low to moderate energy consumption compared to existing techniques.

The consistent occurrence of organic carbon early in the paragenesis of Mississippi Valley-type sulfide deposits suggests a genetic link between organic carbon and the sulfide ores. Reduction of sulfate in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is commonly proposed as the precipitation mechanism for these deposits, but inorganic sulfate reduction is too slow to be important to the chemistry of the ore zone, and bacteria, which catalyze sulfate reduction at low temperatures, are not known to survive at the temperatures of mineralization. Sulfate reduction with or without bacteria is not consistent with the sulfur Isotope evidence. Sulfur isotope studies also indicate that the derivation of sulfur from hydrocarbon at the sites of mineralization is unlikely. Organometallic complexing may be involved in the transport of metals, but no plausible mechanism for breaking these complexes at the sites of mineralization has been proposed. Reduction of partly oxidized sulfur species in the mineralizing solution by organic carbon at the sites of mineralization is a possibility which deserves further scrutiny.

P.T. Inco has constructed a smelter to produce 45 000 tonnes (49 500 tons) of nickel per year as a nickel matte from the lateritic ores of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The facilities include mines, five screening stations, two dryers, three novel reduction kilns, three electric furnaces, three top blown rotary converters, and associated infrastructure of port, towns and a hydroelectric generating station. The screening stations and converters are unique in the industry. The problems encountered in the construction and operation of this complex facility in remote Indonesia are described.

This work was completed in a 440 KW pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000 Kg/hr industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives of the work were to: (1) identify the variables which affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum sulfur removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. The variables which were identified as being important in sulfur capture were: Ca/S molar ratio, flue gas temperature at the limestone injection location, and limestone particle residence time. The maximum sulfur dioxide removal was 72%. The addition of limestone increased the particle deposition rate in the combustor; however, all deposits were easily removed by an air lance.

Tunnel inspections have traditionally been carried out manually by inspectors writing up observations and taking photos of defects. The results from the inspection and the defects observed are dependent upon the rigor of the inspectors and may be subject to repeatability and consistency issues and is often time consuming with elevated health and safety risks. This paper will discuss work that is being carried out in developing and implementing an innovative hardware and software solution integrating machine learning to automate the process of capturing objective tunnel condition information, offering cost and programme savings as well as health and safety improvements

The rest potentials of molybdenite electrodes are measured as a function of pH in absence and presence of flotation reagents. The chemicals used include sodium ethyl xanthate, kerosene, dextrin,sodium hydrosulfide, hydrated sodium molybdate, sodium sulfate, and hydrated sodium thiosulfate. The effect of dissolved oxygen is also noted. The obtained data are correlated with the results of micro-flotation tests obtained under similar chemical conditions.

Gas wells have often intersected mining resources, but unconventional shale well drilling has more recently challenged mines to balance the risk of interaction due to higher pressures and larger quantities of gas. Full extraction mining, such as the longwall method, induces ground movement that may influence the casings if wells are drilled within the mining area. The possibility of a casing shear would lead to the risk of unplanned gas migration into the mine. This has the potential to quickly overcome the ventilation system and reach the explosive range which, if ignited, can have catastrophic consequences on the health and safety of underground workers. The utilization of network software to model mine ventilation is a common practice in the mining industry and can assist with a well breach scenario. This work focuses on a well breach in between two longwall panels after second panel mining with gas entering primarily through the gobs of the adjacent longwall panels. Applying the network software Ventsim, a gob zone and ventilation network were created to better understand the distribution of gas within the mine and the limitations and effectiveness of a ventilation system. The model shows both a transient flow simulation and steady state concentrations throughout the mine ventilation system. Using a standard Pittsburgh coal seam longwall ventilation scheme, we find that the system can dilute a significant inflow of up to 700 cfm of methane.
