The effect of some of the reagents, namely hydrocarbon oil, Syntex (sulfated coconut oil surfactant), pine oil, sodium silicate, and lime, used at the Climax mill on the recovery and grade of molybdenite and gangue minerals has been investigated experimentally using factorially designed test approach in the laboratory. The results of the investigation are presented in two dimensional plots. The lower additions of lime (equivalent to a pH of 8 to 8.5) were desirable for maximizing recovery subject to constraints on grade. Higher additions of pine oil improved recovery, but only at the expense of grade. A mathematical model of the objectives of an operating plant was formulated and optimum reagent conditions obtained.

Generally, waste such as soil and sandstone is used in mines for road construction or haul roads. In many such mines, it is challenging to design haul road pavement to match the dumper capacity. This paper investigates overburden soil to find its utility as a pavement material. It is found that overburden soil is unsuitable pavement material without stabilization; hence, nine composite materials are developed using overburden soil and RBI. Physical, mechanical and microstructural properties of unstabilized and stabilized soil are determined. Statistical analysis is carried out to assess the effect of soil type, RBI and curing period of strength characteristics of unstabilized and stabilized soil. ANOVA tests assess the influence of RBI percentage on soil geotechnical properties, and regression relations are developed. Two-way ANOVA shows the effect of RBI and soil type on soil geotechnical properties, whereas one-way ANOVA shows that the influence of soil type is more than the RBI. The regression relation is developed for CBR, UCS, Poisson’s ratio and modulus of elasticity with a good correlation coefficient. The performance of RBI is more with the finer material and reduces with an increase in the size of soil grains. The performance of the developed composite is better than the earlier developed composite based on overburden with fly ash, lime kiln dust, lime or clinker.

"Due to the time-consuming nature of froth testing in a laboratory environment, practical limitations require the development of a method of applying a single set of performance test data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) obtained for a single froth pump at a given speed to a range of froth pump speeds and sizes, % air content and liquid viscosities. Head, efficiency and flow all vary as functions of both liquid viscosity and air content. As such, it is necessary to develop a technique that can be used to interpolate from existing test data in order to predict froth performance for pumps of various sizes running at variable speeds. Details of the technique developed in order to achieve this goal, as well as the insights gained from analysis of the resulting regressions, are discussed. Additionally, comparisons are made between the performance predictions of this test-derived method and those of the Hydraulic Institute standard for the effects of liquid viscosity on centrifugal pump performance (ANSI, 2010).IntroductionPump performance data (Visintainer and Whitlock, 2012) has been collected for a froth pump using an experimental loop outfitted with an array of pressure transducers, mass flow meters, an inverted U-loop, magnetic flow meter and an assortment of other instrumentation. Experiments were performed on pure water, water and air, pure corn syrup, and corn syrup and air. Data was obtained for % air contents of 0-30% and viscosities of 1- 15,000 cSt at eight specific valve positions (eight different flows as a percentage of best efficiency flow points) and the viscosity was changed by allowing the system temperature to increase during testing. The test pump is a 710-mm diameter impeller, GIW HVF, open shrouded, vented design that has its discharge axis oriented at 45° upward from the horizontal. Introduction A new technology is evolving as a result of growing industry and government concerns over the potential impacts of possible airborne emissions from uranium tailings piles. A major component of the technology is the use of earth covers to stabilize the tailings after mill operations have ceased. While various analytical models have been used to predict the thickness of required covers, experimental validation of the models has been necessary. This paper presents the results of a field program to select and test cover material to determine its suitability for eventual reclamation of a currently active tailings pile. The two main criteria guiding the study were the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission radon flux requirements (reduction to less than twice background pre-1979, and to 2 pCi/m2 -sec above background post-1979) and the desire to employ locally available material. The methodology chosen for this study consisted of three main elements: o Determination of the background radon flux. o Determination of the radon flux from the tailings pile. o Experimental determination of the cover material diffusion coefficient and and calculation of cover thickness. The first two elements of the study are relatively straightforward, the last phase is discussed in detail. Background Radon Flux Measurements of radon-222 emanation rates from the surface of the ground were taken at three sampling locations. Samples were collected by means of the accumulator can method described by Wilkening, 1977. Both morning and afternoon samples were collected at each site to obtain an average. The measured fluxes were fairly uniform and did not differ greatly among sites. The overall average flux for all sites was 0.63[+]0.28(o) pCi/m2 -sec. This value is equal to the average radium-226 concentration determined in the soil, thus yielding a one to one ratio of radon-222 emitted (in pCi/m2 -sec) to soil radium content (in pCi/g). In 2016, a 3.7-ML magnitude event caused by mining activity occurred at a longwall mine in southwestern Virginia which was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and felt by local residents. The event was the largest of its kind since a global mine design change by the operator was instituted in 2008 following three large events in 2005, 2006, and 2007 (3.4, 4.3, and 3.4 Moment Magnitude (Mw), respectively). Two of the three pre-2008 events (2005 and 2007) damaged ventilation controls in the mine which fueled a mine fire. In 2016, the mine’s management requested researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to access geological data and determine what parameters could possibly lead to events of a magnitude of 1.0 ML or greater. Evaluation of 2152 geological data points and modeling revealed three major geological factors in common with the majority of the 181 recorded +1.0 ML events from 2009 through 2016. Nuclear radiation systems for gauging solids content in process slurries and level in crushers has demonstrated acceptance in ore processing. The use of nuclear radiation for moisture analysis of bulk materials is presently receiving acceptance in beneficiating and agglomerating processes. On the horizon is the use of nuclear activation methods for continuous, qualatative and quantitative analysis of concentrate. The common characteristics of these uses of radiation is the non-contacting nature of the measurement. Unquestionably, this is the dominant reason for acceptance of nuclear methods in level and slurry-gauging. Moisture activation analysis of a product using nuclear methods retain this advantage. However, and: more importantly, they offer new solutions to old problems. The nuclear method in addition to being non-contacting, is non-destructive and provides a continuous measurement of the process variable. The system responds: to the fundamental makeup of matter, mass and elemental composition, not to secondary properties such as temperature, resistivity, or dielectric constant. Measurement is a volume rather than a surface phenomenon, thus the results can provide a truer pricture of the measured variable.

With decreasing ore grades, the tailings of mining operations are becoming of increasing interest as metal-containing secondary raw materials. The objective of the current work was to investigate chloride leaching of gold, copper, cobalt, nickel, and zinc present in the flotation tailings. In the current study, the effect of cupric ion as an oxidant (0–50 g/L) and NaCl (150–250 g/L) on metals extraction was investigated. The other parameters, such as pH (1.8), temperature (95 °C), solid/liquid ratio (25%), oxygen feed rate (1200 mL/min), leaching time (24 h), and stirring rate (950 rpm), were kept constant. Gold dissolution rate was shown to increase with increase in cupric ion concentrations up to 50 g/L. Also, increase in NaCl concentration up to 250 g/L increased gold extraction. Majority of the copper present in the flotation tailings could be dissolved with all the all solutions investigated. The other base metals, cobalt, nickel, and zinc extractions were also shown to increase with increase in the cupric ion and sodium chloride concentration. However, even in the absence of cupric ion addition (t = 72 h, 250 g/L NaCl), the final extraction of Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, and Fe increased up to 98, 93, 83, 76, and 80%, respectively. This shows the power of inherently originating oxidants present in the tailings. Furthermore, the solid analysis of the leach residue indicated that leaching the flotation tailings in pure NaCl may result in partial gold dissolution. The results demonstrate that significant amount of metals present in the tailings could be extracted even with only NaCl as added chemical in the presence of oxygen feed, oxidizing agents originating directly from the raw material. This can provide an advantageous cyanide-free method for extraction of metals from very low-grade tailings with low chemical consumption.

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution.. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated predominance diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

The handleability monitor has been specifically designed to provide a simple, rapid and on-site assessment of the whole or part consignment of a coal blend in its ‘as-received’ condition. Evaluation has been carried out at a number of coal-handling plants, on both metallurgical and power station coals from a variety of sources world-wide. The results which are used to predict which coals could routinely pass through a handling plant at line capacity, without causing blockage or delay, have also been correlated with moisture, ash and size analyses of the coal to develop a predictive model of handleability.

Bayan Obo ore contains mainly bastnaesite, monazite and associated iron, fluorite, calcite, dolomite, barite, and trace amount of columbite. Due to its complex mineral compositions and similar mineral properties, it is difficult to separate and obtain rare earth and fluorite concentrates with high purity by conventional magnetic separation and flotation. In this paper, a stepwise magnetic separation process comprised of wet permanent magnetic separation (PMS), wet electromagnetic separation (EMS), and superconducting magnetic separation (SCMS) was proposed to pre-concentrate iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals from Bayan Obo ore. The results showed that iron, rare earth, and fluorite preconcentrates with high purity and low impurity content could be achieved, which might be helpful to shorten the technological process and improve the separation efficiency for the subsequent flotation of iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals.

Electric utility response to certain amendments of the Clean Air Act has resulted in a production of several types of alkaline coal combustion byproducts. Alkaline combustion byproducts are gaining increasing usage for acid mine drainage mitigation as research leads to a better understanding of their beneficial applications. Since January of 1997, Mettiki Coal Corporation has been injecting alkaline flue gas desulfurization material from Virginia Power&apos;s Mt. Storm Unit #3 wet limestone scrubber into abandoned portions of the active Mettiki mine. This paper provides an overview of the key design, transportation, regulatory, and environmental issues faced in the project.

Frozen coal creates severe handling problems. Utilities require uninterrupted supplies of coal to meet their increasing coal consumption rates. Difficulties incurred due to frozen coal result in more costly downtime for the utilities. Air cannons, vibratory hammers and thaw sheds are examples of mechanical devices used to break, crack or thaw frozen coal. Recently chemical treatments have been developed as preventive measures. The freezing of coal depends upon a number of factors, of which one of the most significant is surface moisture. The more there is, the larger the frozen coal problem. Slide 1 depicts a graph of frozen coal compressive strength as a function of surface moisture. Below a certain minimum value the coal will not freeze. Above this point, compressive strength is essentially a linear function of moisture over the range practically encountered. By surface moisture is meant the free moisture on coal having a normal vapor pressure as opposed to capillary moisture or inherent moisture. In addition to the straightforward freezing of coal surface moisture binding particulates together, frost formation occurs due to temperature gradients which develop in rail-cars and stockpiles .

The purpose of this study is to investigate the index-mechanical properties of igneous rocks by using the electrical resistivity method. Electrical resistivity, index (P-wave velocity, dry density, and porosity), and uniaxial compressive strength values of 48 different igneous rock samples were measured in the laboratory. Simple regression analysis was performed between index-mechanical properties and electrical resistivity values. Strong exponential and logarithmic correlations were found between electrical resistivity and the index-mechanical properties of the igneous rock samples.

The mining industry is currently looking to better understand, anticipate, and be able to mitigate business and operational risks in order to deliver the rewards of risk taking, and to minimize the frequency and impact of risk on the downside. Assessing risk works from the premise that the identification and management of existing risks can be very challenging, especially when threats are not easy to detect, the likelihood of occurrence is difficult to gauge, and/or the consequences are uncertain. Some approach this as a ?check the box? task, even though fire and safety incidents continue to occur and investigations often find the hazard analyses did not properly identify the cause or consequence. You cannot engineer protective designs and safeguards for causes and consequences that have not been identified appropriately. For the mining industry, risk management is an important tool for making critical decisions and, in some cases, meeting regulatory requirements. Providing high-quality documentation that meets both regulatory and corporate requirements is critical for maintaining safe, uninterrupted mining operations. Risk management is a five-part process: 1. Identify the hazards and their causes, 2. Determine the hazard consequences, 3. Calculate the frequency of occurrence, 4. Quantify the risk associated with the system, process, or procedure, and 5. Provide feasible solutions for the risks

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. The AMAX of Canada Limited Kitsault mine is located approximately 150 kilometers, by air, north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia at the head end of A1 ice Arm, just east of the southern tip of the Alaskan Panhandle. It is presently only accessible by sea or air, although a road is being constructed by the company which will provide access to Terrace, a commercial centre with a population of about 15,000. The topography is typically coastal mountainous with peaks rising to 2,100 meters around the head end of the inlet. The concentrator is at an elevation of 515 meters with the mine at 630 meters. This open pit molybdenum mine was previously operated between 1968 and 1972 by British Columbia Molybdenum Limited, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation. AMAX of Canada Limited has spent $194 million to refurbish and expand this operation.

The physico-chemical interactions among minerals such as olivine, chromite and serpentine; the most commonly present ions in solution such as Ca and Mg; and flotation reagents such as EDTA and oleic acid were investigated. The study was conducted via release tests, electrophoretic measurements and microflotation of selected minerals coming from the Kukes deposit in Albania. The results were confirmed in beneficiation tests on two ores, one from the Kukes (Kalimash) deposit and the other from the Rizo deposit in Greece. It was demonstrated that, when Na-oleate is used as collector, chromite, olivine and serpentine can be separated at pH 2.5 and/or pH 5.5 when employing ethylenediamine tetraacetate (EDTA) on previously deslimed material. This approach ensures flotation concentrates with a Cr203 content better than 50% with a recovery of more than 75%.
