Pittsburgh #8 coal cleaned by the conventional froth flotation was oxidized in a 2-liter Parr Stirred Top Bench Reactor. The oxidation time was varied up to 5 hours; the temperature, from 150 to 225°C, the oxygen pressure, from 15 to 500 psi; and coal dosage, from 15 to 60 grams in 600 ml of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring total acidic group formed on the coal surface as well as by measuring the adsorption of calcium ion from a solution under standard conditions. It was found that the oxidation increased with increasing oxygen pressure without much leveling-off effect. However, the oxidation of coal increased sharply from 150°C to 175°C and then tended to level off above 175°C. The adsorption of calcium was reached more than 3% on the coal oxidized under favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The BTU loss was sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concludes that the optimum oxidation of coal should be conducted at high oxygen pressures around (e.g. 500 psi) 170°C for 3 hours. This study also concludes that the oxidation in an autoclave is far superior to that in a fluidized bed in terms of calcium adsorption, BTU loss and reaction time.

The goal of hot mix asphalt (HMA) design is optimal material blending to meet Superpave specifications. HMA cost minimization has being modeled as linear programing (LP) (Awuah-Offei et al 2011) and mixed integer LP problems (Brown et al, 2012) and solved with commercial software such as LINDO and CPLEX. Often these software, which are designed to solve general optimization problems, have licenses that cost thousands of dollars. The objective of this study is to develop a novel solution algorithm to the HMA optimization problem presented by Brown et al. (2012), which will negate the need for expensive commercial packages and is specific to this problem. This novel algorithm is based on the branch and bound algorithm for solving mixed integer problems. The algorithm is incorporated into a software package with an easy-to-use graphical user interface. The developed algorithm is validated using a real-life HMA problem. Using this solution algorithm will save companies thousands of dollars, otherwise used to purchase software licenses.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is currently conducting laboratory experiments to study the reactions occurring during in situ leaching of oxide copper ores hosted by biotite-poor granite and biotite-rich granite porphyry. Detailed pre-leach and post-leach petrographic examinations of the rock samples are combined with the leach solution chemistry resulting from core leaching experiments to enable an evaluation of the various reactions which are responsible for the observed fluid chemistry. The information resulting from these laboratory studies is being utilized to support the design of the Bureau's ongoing field research project at the Santa Cruz deposit near Casa Grande, AZ. Atacamite and chrysocolla are the primary copper minerals present in this deposit, and both are readily soluble in the dilute 5% sulfuric acid solutions used in these experiments. In addition to the dissolution of copper minerals, biotite dissolution also occurs during the experiments, contributing K, Mg, Fe, and Al to the leach solution. The biotite dissolution appears to be non-stoichiometric, as it is progressively altered to vermiculite and finally, amorphous silica. While K, Mg, and Fe concentrations in solution steadily increase with time, Al quickly reaches a maximum, and then remains relatively constant for the remainder of the experiment. This suggests that Al saturation is achieved, and this Is supported by the presence of precipitated Al sulfate and aluminosillcate clay mineralization in the post-leach rock samples.

Many large. low-grade (refractory) sulfide gold resources exist in Nevada and other parts of the world that are not amenable to concentration by conventional flotation practice, Over the past several years Santa Fe Pacific Gold (SFPG) has investigated flotation process options to economically treat low-grade refractory resources of this type at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks. Conventional flotation technology applied to the original high-grade gold resources at Lone Tree and Twin Creeks was initially unsuccessful. Review and analysis of auriferous (gold-bearing) iron sulfide mineralogical characteristics and flotation chemistry provided a fundamental understanding that led to the development of a new flotation process that SFPG refers to as N2TEC. This paper discusses the development of this technology and compares N2 TEC results with conventional flotation practice.

For more than 100 years, diamond mining has been Namibia?s most important mining sector. Today, it provides the highest foreign currency income for the country?s development. Since the late 1970s, offshore mining of diamonds has gained more importance and now more than 60 percent of Namibia?s generally high-quality stones come from those offshore deposits, with a steady increase expected for the coming years. Diamonds in Namibia The mining industry is one of the three pillars of the Namibian economic development, along with tourism and fishing. Diamond mining is one of the two main mining activities in Namibia and diamond mining operations are rapidly moving from onshore to offshore deposits. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current and future situation of the Namibian mining industry, with a special focus on the tasks and new technical developments for the successful excavation of beach and marine diamond deposits. The different deposits and the adequate applied mining technologies and methods are shown in examples.

Iron ore pelletizing using compressive and shear action on wet mixture feed has been studied. The physical properties, namely, moisture content, drop strength, green compressive strength (GCS), dry compressive strength (DCS), porosity, and cold crushing strength (CCS), have been studied. Pelletizing tests were carried out on four different types of ore, namely, hematite ore, magnetite ore, goethite ore, and sinter return fines. The inference of shear forces on silica distribution index in dry pellet has been studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Significant improvement in physical strength was observed due to compressive and shear forces on the pellet mixture feed. However, decrease in moisture content and ball porosity has been observed. Silica distribution index improved by 1.72 times for hematite ore, 1.47 times for magnetite ore, and 1.68 times for goethite ore. It has been found that bubble cavity has been reduced which is good indicator in terms of physical properties.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), with the assistance of cooperating underground mining operations and state agencies, has conducted research exploring devices and technologies that could be used to assist miners navigating through smoke and dust resulting from a fire or explosion. Recent events in mines confirm that smoke and dust can enter and contaminate mine escapeways, creating an atmosphere with severely reduced visibility. This reduced visibility results in substantially increased escape times, possible disorientation or confusion, and increased stress levels, and may prevent evacuation altogether. Tools or devices that assist miners in navigating through smoke-filled areas void of lifelines could make the difference in successful escape from the mine. This paper presents the results of OMSHR research to identify and evaluate tools and devices that could provide meaningful information to evacuating miners in areas with limited visibility and without the benefit of a lifeline.

Affected by the disturbance of blasting activities, deformation instability and rock dynamic disasters are prone to occur in deep hard rock roadways. Thus, it is particularly necessary to understand the failure behavior of rocks and roadways under dynamic loads. In this study, a series of impact loading tests were carried out on sandstone samples with and without a circular cavity by a modified split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test system. The mechanical properties and energy evolution of the samples were systematically investigated, and the effect of cavity size was analyzed. The results showed that the presence of the cavity in the samples weakens the dynamic compressive strength by more than 10%, and the peak strain and brittleness are also reduced to varying degrees. Under dynamic loading, spalling cracks occur first on the roof and floor of the cavity, and then different numbers of shear cracks are formed on the sample diagonals. The eventual shear failure mode is the result of the connection of the shear cracks and the cavity. As the cavity radius increases, the dissipated energy density and fractal dimension both grow accordingly, leading to smaller and smaller rock fragments. The dynamic failure behavior of the circular cavity can be well explained based on the dynamic stress distribution law. Overall, this study can provide a reference for the study of the mechanism of rock burst in deep roadways.

Deregulation, as authorized by the Energy Policy Act of 1992 (PL102-486) allows free-market competition in the electric-utility industry. As the act unfolds, though, uncertainties abound about the type, degree and direction of impacts throughout the affected economy — from fuel suppliers to electricity generators and from power distributors to energy consumers. Instead of having a familiar base of captive customers and electricity prices fixed by negotiation with state public utility commissions, utility companies are preparing for open, free-market competition. They are looking at all areas, including fuel supply, to cut costs to remain competitive. Humorous anecdotes are told about utility companies shunning insiders for senior executive positions. Instead, they are opting for people from the telephone or other industries with deregulation experience. And there are light-hearted stories about a trend away from traditional electric-company names, such as the name of a city or state followed by Edison or Power and Light, to space-age names, such as Ameren, Entergy, Illinova or Unicom. No one wants to be left behind or be perceived to be left behind.

"This paper presents the results of tests performed to study the effect of slurry solids concentration on the behavior of gas dispersion in industrial-scale mechanical flotation cells. The experiments were conducted at five concentrator facilities run by a Mexican mining company, specifically in the rougher bank of the lead/zinc flotation circuits. Those mechanical cells having significant contribution to the performance of the circuit, that is, the cells that enable high recovery, were characterized. The measurement protocol enables measurement of the superficial gas velocity, gas holdup and bubble size, and sampling of the mineral slurry. The measured data indicate that bubble size and gas holdup decreases as the concentration of solids increases. IntroductionThe process of mineral concentration by flotation is based on contact between particles and air bubbles, the selective adhesion of hydrophobic particles onto the bubbles, and the rising of the bubble-particle aggregates to the surface of the flotation cell to overflow over the lip to form the concentrate. It is now accepted that the physical and chemical process variables that control the flotation of hydrophobic particles are closely related to gas dispersion (Schwarz and Alexander, 2005). Gas dispersion is defined by the superficial gas velocity, Jg (Torrealba-Vargas, Gomez and Finch, 2006), the gas holdup, eg (Tavera, Gomez and Finch, 1997), the bubble size, d32 (Dobby and Finch, 1986; Gorain et al., 1995; Hernandez-Aguilar et al., 2004) , and the bubble surface area flux, Sb (Manqiu and Finch, 1989; Manqiu, Finch and Uribe-Salas, 1991). In recent years, the advances that have been made in sensor technology have enabled the characterization of gas dispersion in industrial flotation cells with excellent results (Gomez and Finch, 2007). This technology advancement has allowed the gaining of a deeper understanding of such complex mechanisms as carrying capacity (Yianatos and Contreras, 2010), collection efficiency (Gorain, Franzidis and Manlapig, 1997; Massinaei et al., 2009) and bubble coalescence (Finch, Nesset and Acuña, 2008; Zangooi, Gomez and Finch, 2010)."

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc., an 81% owned subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in early 1988. Production at the open pit Grasberg deposit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold orebody is contained with a young igneous complex of dioritic composition which intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork.

Detrital minerals of mantle origin have been found in the Green River Basin of Southwestern Wyoming (Figure 1). Pyrope, pyrope-almandine, and chrome-bearing clinopyroxene and orthopyroxene occur on the antmounds of Pogonomyrmex Occidentalis. These antmounds are a common sight throughout the western U.S., and were used by early paleontologists as fossil mammal collection sites. The mound is composed of two types of material; (1) soil excavated during the digging of the nest below the surface (maximum depth 3 meters) and (2) larger grains collected from the surface and placed on the mound, probably to prevent erosion. The selection of grains to armor the mound seems to be based largely on the mean diameter of the grain, with other factors such as weight, sphericity, roundness and composition in decreasing order of importance (Wheeler and Wheeler, 1963). The minerals of this study happen to fall within that mean diameter range. The garnets are found on the mounds as 3-6 mm diameter subrounded to subangular grains. The pyroxenes are also 3-6 mm in diameter and are most commonly subangular laths. The minerals themselves show evidence of abrasion, such as frosted surfaces and rounded edges. Orange peel texture is present on some of the grains, which suggests that kelyphitic rims were once present, but have been removed. Also, no similar minerals were found in sieved soil auger samples to depths of 2 to 6 meters taken near the antmounds. These observations imply a distal rather than proximal source for the minerals. Lamproitic rocks of upper mantle origin are found bordering the "Green River Basin. The best known are the Leucite Hills, a series of ultrapotassic volcanics found on the north flank of the Rock Springs Uplift (Carmichael, 1967). Minor occurrences of mica peridotite and ultrapotassic volcanics are also found on the western end of the Uinta Mountains in Utah (Best, et al, 1968). None of these rocks are known to contain minerals like those on the antmounds. The garnets are comprised of purple chrome pyrope, red chrome pyrope-almandine, and pink to orange low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandine. Oxide statistics for these groups are summarized in Table 1. These three groups are distinct when their Cr203 values are plotted against magnesium number (Figure 2). The chrome pyropes are highest in Cr203 (1.28-2.66%) and have high, restricted Mg number values (0.781-0.826). The chrome pyrope almandines have similarly high Cr203 (1.29-2.62%) but a lower Mg number range. The low chrome pyrope/pyrope-almandines have the lowest Cr203 content (0.09-0.73) and the widest Mg number range (0.534-0.836). Using the classification scheme of Dawson and Stephens (1975) the chrome pyropes are most similar to garnets derived from kimberlite and from garnet lherzolite, websterite, and harzburgite xenoliths in kimberlite. The chrome pyrope-almandines and the low chrome pyrope/ pyrope almandines are similar to garnets derived from eclogite nodules (Figure 3).

Irrigation simulates a climate change so that crops can be grown that otherwise would not thrive. The abundant sunshine and warm weather of many arid regions induces a rate of growth in excess of that in cooler, moister regions. Hence, the arid part of eastern Washington, traversed by the Columbia River, is admirably suited to irrigation. The Pasco Basin lies in south-central Washington at the south end of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The Basin, because it lies in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, receives only 6 to 10 inches of precipitation a year with somewhat greater amounts, commonly as snow, on the higher hills. Recent extremes included 3 inches of precipitation from August 1967 to August 1968, and 12 inches in the succeeding "12 months. Most of the precipitation falls during winter. If it were to fall in summer or were evenly distributed throughout the year, evaporation rates probably would produce a true desert.

The concept of initiating a large action-oriented contract, directed toward inherently safe mining systems, was conceived by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in January 1970. At that time we were in the process of establishing research contracts and grants, about 100 of which were let in FY 71 to deal individually with fairly specific technological areas. These projects in the aggregate covered a wide spectrum of health and safety problems. What appeared to be necessary was the creation of a project or program that would provide a focal point for the demonstration of many of the results of this research and also in the action sense culminate with working hardware and systems that could be tested and demonstrated over a fairly long teen. The concept of working demonstrable systems, rather than just a conceptual study, was, felt to be necessary for two significant reasons. In the development of any new system, the translation from concept to working hardware is usually a costly and time consuming process which acts as a deterrent to implementation. Secondly, many decisions in the mining community to change equipment or systems ,are based on first hand observation of the new system, in operational practice, an attitude which is certainly understandable in view of the high capital costs of equipment. In most current practice, the methods that are employed in technical evaluations of cement raw materials are deterministic; i.e., decisions among alternative raw mixes and alternative plant designs are reached with the aid of only "average" compositions and "representative" samples of the available raw materials. Nevertheless, cement plants are sensitive to raw-material variability, and uniformly high-quality raw materials are not so abundant as they once were. Some simple examples will illustrate how geological techniques can be combined with geostatistical and operations-research approaches to customize mining and processing systems to deal with variable raw-material compositions.

"GENERAL PROJECT DATA The Sparvo Tunnel belongs to “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65 km highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route and to connect in a faster way Bologna and Flor-ence. It is composed of a 2,5 km twin tunnel excavated in a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas. The gradient is 2.6 % and the minimum radius is 1’400 m. The internal diameter of the precast seg-ment lining, equivalent to the final section of the tunnel, is 13.6 m. MAIN TBM SPECIFICATIONS TBM Earth Pressure Balanced S-574 “Martina”, manufactured by Herrenknecht, has a theoretical excava-tion diameter of 15’615 mm. It is equipped with a conical shield 12.2 m long and four back-up gantries. The total length of the machine is approximately 130 m, weighing approximately 4’500 tons. The total installed power is 16’800 kW. The main drive has a diameter of 8’700 mm and has a triple axis roller type bearing equipped with a labyrinth system including 4 sealing lips. TIME SCHEDULE OF INITIAL TBM DRIVE A time schedule of the initial TBM drive is presented in the following list: •,August 25, 2011: start of the excavation of the 1st drive of the Sparvo tunnel •,October 29,2011: stop of the advance of the TBM for gear oil contamination and clogging •,October 29 to December 20, 2011: repair works on the main drive system and modifications on the conditioning system •,December 20,2011 to July 25, 2012: restart excavation of the 1st drive (north tunnel) and its breakthrough •,July 25 to November 29, 2012: 180° turning of the TBM, detailed check of the main drive seal-ing system and fixing problems on gear boxes, race ring, clamping ring and cutting wheel •,November 29,2012 to July 24, 2013: excavation of the 2nd drive (south tunnel) and its break-through •,August 2013 to July 31, 2014: disassembly of the TBM (first 4 months) and standstill of the jobsite for structural issues on precast concrete lining of the tunnel •,July 31, 2014 to March 10, 2015: inspection, dismantling and packaging of each part of the main drive (flange ring, gear box housing and main bearing). Interactions between human beings and their work environment require the body to regulate its temperature by balancing heat production and loss. Comfortable environmental conditions are crucial for keeping workers safe and healthy and to maintain a suitable level of productivity. However, achieving a proper core body temperature may become challenging under different conditions, especially in high heat-generating workplaces such as hot underground mines. Because hot underground mines have the potential to expose workers to heat stress, compliance with standardized and regulated indices and criteria is distinctly required. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current research on heat stress and strain in hot underground mines, collected from published and specialized literature. General definitions, statistics of heat-related accidents in mining, overview of the indices, standards, and recommendations for heat stress are provided herein.

This presentation will be a general overview of the Cerrejon Coal Project being developed jointly by Carbocol, an entity of the Colombian government, and Intercor, an Exxon affiliate. The word "Cerrajon", by the way, is simply Spanish for a small hill. There is a distinctive hill near the mine site, and it's the only landmark of any significance. It's shown in Figure 1. So the locals call this area "El Cerrejon", "the little hill." Let me start with some of the highlights of the project, summarized in Figure 2, and then go into more detail later. A four-year feasibility study covered the geology, quality, engineering, construction operation and marketing of coal from this region. This study led Exxon to declare the project as commercial in July of 1980. Then in September of 1980 the president of Colombia gave the government's okay to proceed.

This report is based on existing reports and recently gathered field data. It discusses mineral resource potential of Tertiary playas in the Fort Irwin region. An estimated 1.3 million tons of measured salt "reserves", and 20 million tons of indicated salt resources, have been identified north of the fort. Other indicated resources include 300,000 tons of celestite, 800,000 tons of gypsum, and 10 million tons of selenite. Zeolitic tuff was mined south of Fort Irwin from 1978 to 1984, and unexplored occurrences are widespread. Calcium-bentonite is mined near Barstow, and more may exist, including valuable sodium-and lithium-based bentonites.

Microscale information about single particle fracture can be incorporated into the macroscale model of the whole size reduction process in the mill. The ultrafast load cell (UFLC) device provides a substantial amount of information about fracture characteristics of a particle under impact loading. UFLC captures high-resolution compressive force signals during particle breakage. The measurement of the compressive force at the instant of fracture of the particle allows computation of a number of comminution-related particle properties, as well as the energy absorbed during fracture. In the current study, limestone particles 50 mm in size were fractured to obtain specific fracture energies. Then, based on the experimental data, two models were proposed to quantify the fracture process. The specific fracture energy distribution of the particles in the range of 6 to 50 mm was defined by the well-known Weibull distribution. The other model is a probabilistic fracture model. This model is a link between energy events occurring in a grinding mill and the breakage rates of particles. The impact energy spectra or energy events occurring in a grinding mill can be obtained with a discrete element method (DEM) simulation. One can model the breakage rates of the mill material by combining the energy spectra with the probabilistic fracture model. This novel approach for the modeling of breakage rates via DEM and UFLC is shown here.
