Background ground water quality is often used to drive remediation programs at sites with waters affected by mining activities. In the past these levels were sometimes chosen without rigorous statistical and geochemical analysis. A probability distribution approach was used at the Sweetwater Uranium Project to separate a large set of geochemical data into populations that represent contributions from different sources. Natural background populations were identified for major ions, metals, and radionuclides, and were submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to modify the extent of a Corrective Action Program and to establish control limits for future monitoring.

Currently six economic heavy mineral deposits are known on the Penholoway Terrace. These are (from south to north) the Green Cove Springs Mine (GCS), Boulogne Mine, Folkston Mine, Mission, Lulaton, and Ludowici. The GCS deposit is located to the west of Highway 17 between the towns of Green Cove Springs and Palatka in the state of Florida and has been mined since 1972. To the north, the erosion created by Black Creek restricts the northern extension of the orebodies and to the south a karst depression and erosion by the St. Johns River restrict southern extensions. The deposit is 20 miles long and up to 4.5 miles wide. Deposit thickness is from 5 feet up to 45 feet. The deposit is a series of regressive barrier island sequences deposited during the Pleistocene along the ancient Penholoway and Wicomico shorelines. The initial transgression of the ocean up to the location of the western Henry orebody was an extensive sea-level still stand as evidenced by the unit thickness and stacked transgressive regressive sequences. This period was followed by sporadic regressing seas and still stands, progressing eastward and stranding the sand bodies which make up the East Extended, TE, and East TE Ridge orebodies. The orebodies are underlain by predominantly non-mineralized fluvial sands and occasional back barrier lagoonal deposited clays. There is a predominance of wetlands on the southern extents of the zone as the surface elevations decrease due to a large karst depression.

The support of the roof in coal mines remains a critical safety issue with 3 fatalities from roof falls in 2007 and 430 injuries from roof falls in 2006. A snapshot survey by the authors of room design and support details as well as unplanned falls of ground in the industry revealed some useful data concerning support use, seam details, fall dimensions, bolt lengths and spacing and the stand-up time.

To address coal refuse tailings storage needs for a mine operation in western Canada, a feasible solution was to convert excavated open pits into tailings cells. A slope stability investigation and design study were completed to determine the necessary width and slope geometry for in-situ native plugs as the impoundment embankment. The native plugs separate the previous open pit from the current active open pit. This configuration allows for the deposition of refuse tailings in the previous pit while allowing mining to safely continue “downstream” of the temporary impoundment. As mining progresses, each subsequent pit will be filled with refuse tailings; thereby, buttressing the upstream slope of the previous native plug. Although these cells are excavated, and the timeframe for downstream exposure is relatively limited, the native plugs are classified as dams and must be designed to meet applicable safety of dam standards since they impound water and tails above mining personnel in the subsequent open pit. The presentation and paper will discuss the investigation and analysis conducted to develop the geotechnical and hydrogeological design recommendations.

Ground engaging tools are used to prevent damage to the main components of earth-moving equipment. These tools consist of everything from shovel teeth to replaceable drill bits to dozer wear plates. The costs of these ?consumable? items are increasing with the costs of raw materials. This project developed a tool to be used by Newmont Mining Corporation to predict the consumption of excavator teeth. This paper presents the results of a Montana Tech research project in which an equation was developed to predict excavator teeth consumption based on production rates and rock properties.

Filtration of hematite ore slurries can be a bottleneck in some hematite processing plants due to inadequate filtration rates caused by the dispersion of fine particles. Flocculation of fine particles in the slurry decreases the specific cake resistance of the filter cake allowing for increased filtration rates. CO2 sparging of hematite slurry was shown to increase the filtration rate by altering the pH and the surface chemistry of the particles. It was shown that an increase in filtration rate of 278% can be accomplished by lowering the pH from 11 to 6.5 using CO2. This was attributed to increased flocculation of hematite and silica particles in the ore.

History The Cortez Mining District has a long history of mining activity dating back to 1862. More recently, Cortez Gold Mines had operated a cyanide leach, counter current decantation (CCD) recovery gold mill from January 1969 to February 1976. This type of plant has been standard in the US for treating higher grade, finely disseminated gold in Carlin type ores. The mill was initially operated from 1969 to 1973 at 1.5 kt/d (1650 stpd) on oxidized ore from the Cortez ore body. In 1973, the mill was operated at 2 kt/d (2200 stpd) on softer, less oxidized, high clay ore from Gold Acres, located 13 km (8 miles) west of Cortez, NV. In February 1976, the oxidized portion of the ore body at Gold Acres was depleted and the mill ceased operations. Successful heap leaching of the lower grade portion of the ores was practiced at both Cortez and Gold Acres to supplement the milling operations. Valuable experience was gained in the operation of these two heap leaching programs (Duncan and Smolik, 1977). The ore heaps at Gold Acres and Cortez were releached with a limited crew from 1976 to 1979. The surge in the price of gold in late 1979 sparked an interest to incorporate new techniques into treating lower grade and less oxidized carbonaceous ores at Cortez. In early 1980, heap leaching was started on low grade oxidized dump material left from the earlier Cortez mining operation. By June of 1980, testwork was completed on the London Extension Dump, a low grade, mildly carbonaceous dump at Gold Acres. It was decided to convert the mill at Cortez from the conventional cyanide leach CCD recovery plant to a carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery system. In May 1983, ore processing from the Horse Canyon deposit began. The Horse Canyon ore body contains both oxide and carbonaceous ores and is located 22.5 km (14 miles) from the Cortez mill. The Cortez CIL circuit was expanded to handle a blend of oxide and carbonaceous ores from Horse Canyon. Ore selection In the last quarter 1979, gold prices were increasing to a point where restarting the Cortez mill, idled since 1976, appeared imminent. Several previously explored geologic reserves at various stages of development were available as possible sources of feed for the mill. Initial metallurgical testing of dumps and tailings from earlier operations was completed, and previously uneconomic deposits were explored. It was decided to pursue sources of ore with the least lead time to production and those with the least capital cost requirements. A master plan was developed to bring the four profitable ore resources into production. Rosario Dominicana, S. A. operates an 8,500 tonne per dayopen pit gold/silver mine in the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The mine is located in an agricultural area which is also an earthquake and heavy rainfall zone. In the 64 years from 1910 to 1974 there were 19 earthquakes within 300 km of the mine in the range of 6 to 8 on the Richter scale and the most recent earthquake in this range occurred in March, 1979. Average annual rainfall in the area is 1.7 m and is distributed throughout the year. Safe and environmentally sound tailings disposal in such conditIons has demanded the buiIding of an extremely strong dam wall and use of a fail-safe system of tailings disposal and solution reclaim. The type of dam, the system of tailings disposal and solution reclaim comprise an interesting example of the manner of handling tailings for a medium tonnage mine. The system is relatively costly but does assure a long-term, safe and trouble free structure and operating system. General views of the dam wall and tailings pond are shown in Figures l through 4.

The mining industry?s traditional preference for protective coatings in corrosive environments, due to cost considerations, has been to apply galvanized and epoxy coatings. As a result of extreme pH levels and the limitations of current products, a new coating has been developed to withstand severe conditions. Harsh chemicals and corrosive groundwater pose added challenges to mines in maintaining long term ground support which demands continuous rehabilitation. This paper highlights the challenges and identifies a solution by applying a new economic coating to DSI?s Omega Bolt? that withstands the most corrosive of conditions. [ ]

"Since 1984, the date of the first recorded fatality involving a remote controlled continuous mining machine, 38 miners in the United States have been killed when they were struck by a continuous mining machine. Proximity detection is a valuable tool for preventing fatalities, and the use of these systems is expected to significantly improve safety. Proximity detection provides a means to prevent accidents like these. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a series of underground tests to evaluate the accuracy and repeatability of proximity detection systems under a number of conditions such as varying the orientation and height of the personal wearable device (PWD), moving the PWD close to the trailing cable, and activating the machine’s mining mode. At the 2014 SME Annual Meeting, results from tests on first-generation proximity detection systems were presented. This paper will provide results from the similar tests performed with second-generation systems. The results show that performance has improved. For example, the negative impact of PWD orientation and the trailing cable has been reduced. However, some inconsistencies remain. Notably, performance changes dramatically when mining mode is activated. INTRODUCTION Since 1984 there have been 38 fatalities involving striking and pinning of the operator and other workers by the continuous mining machine (CMM) [1]. In August 2011, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) published a proposed regulation that would require proximity detection systems on all continuous mining machines except full-face machines [2]. Proximity detection systems are designed to stop machine motion to protect miners from striking/pinning hazards. Several MSHA-approved proximity detection systems are commercially available. MSHA estimates that of the 38 fatal striking and pinning accidents that have occurred since 1984 involving CMMs, the use of proximity detection could have been a preventative factor in at least 28 cases [1]. Furthermore, MSHA estimates that proximity detection could prevent 20% of all deaths throughout the industry [3]. NIOSH researchers have been involved in the development and testing of proximity detection technology since creating the HASARD system [4] and have recently conducted research intended to develop more advanced proximity detection technology for CMMs [5,6,7,8]. In addition, NIOSH has also conducted research investigating how the signals of a proximity detection system propagate [9,10] and have developed a novel method for determining the location of a personal wearable device (PWD) relative to the magnetic field generators [11,12]."

"The diversification of energy sources in the United States has seen some major shifts during the past decade resulting from:• A sudden abundance of low-cost natural gas becoming available through advanced horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques.• Incentive-driven policies leading to new development in alternative energy.• The emergence of alternative energy sources proliferated as a result of state and federal level incentives and falling capital costs.Coal was once recognized as the primary low-cost fuel source for the generation of electricity in the United States for most of the last century, providing upward of 50 percent of the total generation capacity during much of that period. However, within the past decade, lower-cost natural gas has overtaken coal as the primary source of fuel used in electricity generation, and alternative sources have steadily grown to now account for approximately 10 percent of the overall mix.West Virginia and Kentucky have not experienced the full breadth of the fuel shift, and, as of 2016, still obtained approximately 80-90 percent of electric power generation from coal. However, as coal plants are retired, there has been a shift toward natural gas for new power plants constructed in the region. The economics of power generation (i.e., lowcost fuel source) has typically been the major factor in determining shifts from one fuel source or technology to another. However, governmental energy policies and incentives have more recently been used to promote the development of new alternative technologies such as wind and solar energy growth to diversify the energy mix. The implementation of these incentives has provided some needed traction and resulted in driving the cost of manufacturing and installation of these new wind and solar systems downward to be more cost competitive with conventional fossil-fueled power sources. Future shifts in the generation capacity by fuel type will also be inevitable and impossible to project accurately as policies change and innovative technologies evolve. Determining factors may include the expiration of current incentives, decreasing capital costs, future environmental regulations, evolution of energy storage systems, technical challenges associated with increasing intermittent sources of generation and the development of unforeseen technologies. West Virginia and Kentucky have been among the least solar friendly states, ranking 44th and 48th of the 50 states (Fig. 1 for WV). "INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. The results of unpublished investigations into surface subsidence from coal mining in the Northern Appalachian Coalfield are summarized. These investigations were carried out by various coal companies and the State of Pennsylvania in the sixties and seventies. Subsidence data were collected and analyzed from 10 room-and-pillar panels in 5 mines in the Pittsburgh coal seam. Results show that angle of draw ranges from 26° to 33° and subsidence factor from 0.42 to 0.72; surface heating generally occurs beyond the edges of the panel, the amount and extent of which vary; waviness occurs in the subsidence profile if a substantial number of pillar stumps are left in irregular patterns; interpanel effect is significant; time-dependent subsidence exists, but varies for different panels; and surface slope does not seem to affect the amount of subsidence.

Cyanide (CN) is used to recover gold from its ores in many locations worldwide. In spite of the established history of gold mining in Alaska, modern cyanidation methods have been used at only one location, the Ryan Lode Mine at Ester Dome, near Fairbanks. Ore was processed by heap leaching between 1987 and 1989, when permitting issues caused operations to be terminated. Those issues have since been resolved, and plans to reopen the mine are currently being discussed. Plans are also proceeding to develop several other ore deposits in the state, all of which include the use of cyanide for gold recovery [6]. Since tailings and effluent water produced from these mines will require treatment, it is important to develop detoxification methods suitable for the Arctic and sub-Arctic conditions found in Alaska. Several methods exist for removing cyanide from mining wastewater. However, most industrial users prefer chemical treatment systems, and typically use sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, or sulfur dioxide/air/copper to oxidize free and complexed cyanides [9]. Biological treatment has been used successfully at two sites in the United States [30,32] and field tested at several others [20,27,28]. In addition, one mine uses "natural processes", which include natural oxidation, photodegradation, and degradation by naturally occurring bacteria [33].

The mining conditions in the Meden Rid mine at levels below 1000 m from the Earth&apos;s surface are specific and rather severe. The rock temperature is about 40-45°C. The air humidity in the workings is approx. 80-90%. There is a limited capacity for additional fresh air supply. The air supply and distribution systems in the mine are very complicated. The airflow recirculation is due to the existing arrangement of the main fans. Certain accidental phenomena are difficult to predict. All these conditions create possibilities for heat and mass exchange between the rock and the air current thus hampering the control of the ventilation and air-conditioning in the mine workings. The changes in the temperature and humidity in certain characteristic places of the development and extraction workings are predicted. The refrigeration output required and the arrangement of the air coolers are also determined. A new ventilation and air- conditioning scherne has been developed. The new ventilation- cooling designs for levels between 1000-1200 m beneath the Earth&apos;s surface are based on the use of portable refrigerating machines having low water flowrate as well as heat-insulating and waterproof materials and methods for preliminary cooling of the orebody within the mining block.

Passive treatment of mine drainage using constructed wetlands has been employed on coal and metal mine sites since about 1985. The technology has advanced significantly since then; there are currently over 600 of these systems treating coal mine drainage in the Eastern U.S. at flow rates of hundreds of liters per minute. Passive treatment performance at three metal mines discussed in this paper has been positive for a wide variety of flows, water chemistry, and climates. The sites include a high-altitude underground copper mine, acidic seepage from a gold heap leach pad, and pumped effluent from an active underground lead mine in Missouri.

In the April issue of Mining Engineering there is a technical note "New size laboratory ball mill for Bond Work Index determination" written by M. Nematollahi which is very confusing. My recollection is that a description of an experimental procedure should be such that someone skilled in the art should be able to reproduce the results. Applying this test to this particular article would according to me cause a failure to be registered. There are apparently three batch laboratory test procedures referred to in the article. One of these is the traditional Bond test with all its limitations such as dry grinding followed by exclusively dry screening, two attributes which fail to simulate conventional industrial grinding. There is a second procedure (NSBM) which the author is advocating as an improvement of the Bond procedure but from the description I doubt that anyone would be able to repeat the procedure. For instance, is the grinding to be done wet or dry, if wet at what pulp density, and how is the screening to be done, wet or dry or a combination?
