The US Geological Survey (USGS) is currently conducting a coal resource assessment of the coalbeds and zones that are projected to provide the bulk of the nation’s resources for the next few decades. The Pittsburgh and Upper Freeport coals are the first two beds in the northern and central Appalachian basin region to undergo fully digital coal assessments. The bed-specific assessments are being carried out in partnership with the state geologic surveys of West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland. Comprehensive stratigraphic and geochemical databases have been developed for both of the beds. The extent of the bed with mined areas, structure contour, isopach, and overburden thickness maps for the Pittsburgh coal bed have been released as USGS open-file reports.

On Nov. 13, 1985, Colombia's Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people and burying several villages. Damages were estimated to be about $US300 million. The following is an account by SME member Antonio Rivera of the volcanic activity that led to the eruption. His account also includes a description of the geography and some geology of the affected area. Mining operations in the area were mostly unaffected, although some operations were forced to close until the roads leading to them could be repaired. Introduction The Ruiz volcano is located on the Central Cordillera of Colombia about 28 km (17 miles) southeast of Manizales, the capital of the state of Caldas. Ruiz is one of nine volcanoes that form a complex volcanic chain within the middle portion of the Central Cordillera. The Cordillera has 30 other volcanoes in the southern part of Colombia. Ruiz volcano Ruiz's elevation is 5200 m (17,060 ft). It is covered by an ice cap estimated to be 20 m (66 ft) thick at its summit, an area that covers 17 km2 (6.5 sq miles). Drainage is composed of several rivers that flow into the Magdalena River on the east and Cauca River on the west. The rivers flowing to the east are Guali, Azufrado, Lagunillas, and Recio. The rivers that flow to the west are Claro, Molinos, and Chinchina. There is a road from Manizales to El Refugio, a ski area located on the northeast flank of the volcano at 4800 m (15,750 ft) in elevation. The Ruiz volcanic complex was built in two stages. The first is a shield type of volcano (mainly lavas) formed about a million years ago. The second is a younger stratovolcano overlaying the ancient one. It consists of lavas and pyroclastics and was built over the past 500,000 years. Twenty-four eruptions of Ruiz are known to have occurred during the last 14,000 years. Its products mainly consist of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, mudflows (lahars), and directed lateral explosions. Historic eruptive record 1595 - Debris avalanche, blast, pyroclastic flows, mudflows, ash flows, and ash fall. 1828-1829 - Ashes (phreatic). 1831-1833 - Gas emissions and ashes. 1845 - Mudflows and pyroclastic flows. 1985 - Sept. 11- Fumarolic activity, phreatic eruption, ash fall, and small mudflows. 1985 - Nov. 13 - Ash and pyroclastic fall, major destructive mudflows (magmato-phreatic eruption). From 1845 through 1984, Ruiz volcano always had a slight fumarolic activity. It was restricted to the crater area. In November and December 1984, the fumarolic activity increased and the first ash emission and vapor-sulfur formation started. Small local earthquakes accompanied these volcanic activities. The volcano had a small erup¬tion on Sept. 11, 1985. It was manifested by phreatic explosions that ejected fragments of the vent and formed ash deposits 25 mm (1 in.) thick around an area 2.5 km (1.5 miles) from the crater. Fine material was blown by the wind and reached Manizales and neighboring areas, producing a small layer of ash up to 10 mm (0.4 in.) thick.

"The second prime area within the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization exploration area named H22 was delineated in 2013 with the goal to ensure sufficient nodule reserves for profitable mining operations and processing.The knowledge base for area H22 has been obtained from archive materials. The geological situation can be characterized as follows: the sea bottom is represented by tectonic blocks oriented in a sub-meridional direction. According to swath mapping, the depressions (troughs) are contoured at depths of 4500-4600 m while the tops of horsts occur at 4300-4350 m. Volcanic relief occupies 6% of the H22 area; in the eastern part a multicone volcano was detected. Its area at the base is 153 km2. The maximum height of a cone above the base is 850 m. The crystalline basement composed by tholeiitic basalts of late Oligocene age is covered by about 100 m of sediments. Semi-consolidated to consolidated calcareous nanofossil sediments of the Marquesas formation are deposited on the basement. Higher up in the profile sediments of the Clipperton formation occur. They are represented by unconsolidated siliceous (Radiolaria, Diatom) ooze. Sediments containing calcium carbonate have not been detected. Where opaline silica (or CaCO3 if any) content is below 5%, the sediments belong to zeolitic clays or red pelagic clays. Grain size composition of the seabed and the near-seabed sediments in H22 classifies them into clayey silts."

The recent spate of catastrophic events at U.S. mines raises the question as to whether or not the mine safety and health system in the U.S. is broken. The prescriptive regulatory regime in the U.S. is not a cure-all for a broken system. Without totally dismissing the contribution of a prescriptive regulatory approach, this paper argues that safety in the U.S. mining industry would be enhanced if the nation adopted a scheme that provides a balance between specification standards and two alternatives: performance and systems-based standards. This would allow effective and flexible means to continuous health and safety performance improvement. Mine operators, regulators and politicians could then go beyond thinking that compliance alone equals strong safety by creating a proactive system that emphasizes continuous improvement. By adopting performance and systems-based standards, exemplary safety and health performers can be recognized, allowing regulators to focus their efforts on those without sound occupational safety systems and who have substandard safety performance. Industrial minerals play a central and dual role in the sustainable development (SD) of natural resources. Over the past decade the mining industry has increasingly focused on sustainably extracting and processing industrial minerals. This trend has been driven by higher energy costs, diminishing water resources and sensitivity towards environmental stewardship. Industrial minerals have been used throughout human history as low cost, naturally occurring, materials. Today they are critical components of recycled packaging, energy efficient building materials, light weight paper coatings, and other products critical to the responsible utilization of global resources. As industrial minerals become more widely used in ?green? products, mining companies have established best practices for the sustainable management of industrial minerals mining and processing. These management practices include reducing energy consumption, minimizing water usage, increasing waste recovery through recycling and process optimization, and maximizing the amount of ore extracted per acre of disturbed land. With the commitment to SD principles, quantitative methods for objectively measuring SD performance have become increasingly important. Measuring sustainability impact is a valuable tool for effectively applying SD principles and for making choices that balance sustainable development against other business objectives. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND MINING Sustainable development is a term that has become a common part of our lexicon; however, it has multiple meanings and interpretations leading to a sometimes confusing and contradictory array of definitions. The absence of a single, precise definition reflects the fact that SD is a broad concept or paradigm that offers guiding principles as opposed to a specific set of criteria or regulations enforceable by government or other oversight agencies. While a principle based conceptual approach allows businesses to broadly apply SD practices that are tailored to their specific situation, it has also led the public to sometimes view voluntary corporate SD programs with a degree of skepticism (Walker and Howard 2002). This is particularly true in the mining industry. One reason for this skepticism is that the relationship between SD and mining is misunderstood and to many, sustainably developing non-renewable mineral resources is a contradiction (Rajaram et al. 2005). However, this view takes a very narrow interpretation of the tenets of SD. The second is that mining carries a legacy of poor environmental stewardship that does not accurately reflect current corporate environmental practices Many minerals companies have adopted the Brundtland Comission?s definition of SD (United Nations 1987): ?? development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?. This definition is very broad and can be interpreted in a number of ways. It provides a general context for sustainable development and is not intended to provide detailed guidelines addressing specific aspects of sustainable development. To fill this gap the following SD principles were drafted by the international minerals community in 2003 (ICMM 2003): 1. Implement and maintain ethical business practices and sound systems of corporate governance. 2. Integrate sustainable development considerations within the corporate decision-making process. 3. Uphold fundamental human rights and respect cultures, customs and values in dealings with employees and others who are affected by our activities. 4. Implement risk management strategies based on valid data and sound science. 5. Seek continual improvement of our health and safety performance. 6. Seek continual improvement of our environmental performance. 7. Contribute to conservation of biodiversity and integrated approaches to land use planning. 8. Facilitate and encourage responsible product design, use, re-use, recycling and disposal of our products. 9. Contribute to the social, economic and institutional development of the communities in which we operate. 10. Implement effective and transparent engagement, communication and independently verified reporting arrangements with our stakeholders. These guidelines insure that SD concepts are applied equally across the industry while setting a clear performance standard and benchmark against which to evaluate success. By adopting these principles and issuing the Milos Statement (http://www.sdimi.org/milos_decl_October%206_2003.pdf), which provides a more detailed vision for integrating SD into everyday business operations, the minerals industry has embraced SD as a core corporate value. The unifying and holistic approach embodied in SD principles impacts the entire mine to market life cycle and addresses the economic, environmental and social consequences of mining. INDUSTRIAL MINERALS The world economy relies heavily on minerals; they are essential to economic prosperity and the quality of life. Industrial minerals are non-metallic, non-fuel minerals that provide the raw materials for a vast range of products used in most every aspect of daily life. They are mined and processed worldwide and they span the spectrum from relatively low value, high volume commodities (e.g. common clay, crushed stone) that are usually mined locally to high value, low volume specialty materials that are sourced from unique one of a kind deposits (e.g. barite, talc, mica). High volume commodity mining operations are often located near the end use market which, in most cases, means areas of high population density where construction and other urban activities drive demand. In these situations the strict adherence to SD principles is particularly critical as these are highly visible operations that must meet the public?s demand for good corporate citizenship. These operations are similar to chemical or other manufacturing facilities that operate near population centers. The vast majority of U.S. coal preparation plants utilize screen-bowl centrifuges to dewater their fine clean coal products. In light of this popularity, researchers at Virginia Tech have engaged in a variety of laboratory and industrial field test programs to develop technological enhancements that have the potential to further improve the performance of this important solid-liquid separation process. These enhancements, which include simple design modifications and new reagent packages, have been shown to significantly improve solids recovery and reduce product moisture in several experimental trials.

The 2,408 meter (7,900-foot) long Middle Rouge Parkway Interceptor Extension varies in size from 1.52-meter (5-foot) to 2.36 meter (7-foot 9-inch) inside diameter. Most of the sewer was constructed in tunnel through fine sands and silts. Piping of these soils through the concrete liner eventually resulted in a loss of soil support, settlement and/or severe distress of the sewer, and the formation of several sinkholes. The repair and restoration was generally performed in the sewer and included cast-in-place concrete, shotcrete, cured in place pipe, soil stabilization, cement grouting, dewatering, and chemical grouting. As a part of the work, temporary pump stations and flow diversions were required to perform the work while minimizing discharges to the adjacent Rouge River.

Mining and processing activities which are proposed on private land, state leases, or unpatented mining claims are governed by numerous local, state, and federal laws which identify the procedures and conditions which must be met before resources can be developed. The respective government agencies responsible for the administration and enforcement of these laws have promulgated supporting regulations and guidelines, and have implemented certain permit and approval processes to ensure compliance. Each exploration project has a unique environ- mental setting and location which further dictates the types of air, water, hazardous waste, and wildlife laws and regulations which must be complied with before development commences. The environmental planning process should be the first step in the evaluation of existing company properties and the potential acquisition of other mineral properties. However. many company don't consider the environmental requirements for a project until the decision is made to develop the property for mining and processing. If a mining company wants to expedite the environmental planning process, it must first develop an in-house process for evaluating the project and determining the environmental approval procedures in the state where the project is located. The first stage of environmental planning involves general information which can set the overall company philosophy for development of projects.

As part of the New York City’s redevelopment of the far west side of mid-town Manhattan, this project will add 1.5 miles of twin bored tunnel to No. 7 Subway Line. The proposed alignment extending from the Times Square Station west beneath 41stStreet turning south under Eleventh Avenue and terminating at 25th Street will include two new stations. The tunnels and station caverns will be primarily constructed in the Manhattan Schist, and will pass in close proximity to several major overly ingstructures. This paper discusses the lithology and structural discontinuities of rockmass along the project alignment, tunnel and cavern rock loading, groundwater hydrology, groundwater quality, groundwater treatment and sustainable design.

Development of improved transportation networks in major urban centers has led more and more to underground construction, the only reasonable solution for decreasing surface traffic congestion. Excavations required by these projects usually cause decompression of the surrounding soil mass which results in subsidence of several centimeters. While these magnitudes of subsidence have no consequences in undeveloped areas, they are often unacceptable in urban areas where existing buildings, structures and utilities are endangered. Recent tunneling projects for the extension of the Paris Metropolitan Transit System (R.A.T.P.) underground network were carried out with this in view and gave rise to the development of a number of innovative techniques for minimizing ground decompression and subsidence. As shown in Figure 1, the recent R.A.T.P. expansion program includes a new express metro, 46 km long, crossing Paris from East to West, and the extension of many existing metro lines in the suburbs. From the start, R.A.T.P. was faced with many unique technical problems for which there was little precedent experience. The structures to be built have large dimensions, with cross-sections typically ranging from 40 to 300 m2, and exceptionally to 600 m2. The new lines are often very deep because the shallow profile is already congested by the existing metro, interceptors, sewers and a very large number of utilities. As a result, new construction is often below ground water level by as much as 20 m. Moreover, the geology varies widely from hard limestone with compressive strength over 1500 kg/cm2 to inconsistent water bearing sand. Finally, curves in the East-West line must have a minimum radius of 500 m which frequently forces the alignment to pass below existing structures, buildings and monuments.

The 112th Annual National Western Mining Conference (NWMC) hosted by the Colorado Mining Association (CMA) drew some political heavyweights, if by voice only, into the fray of two of the hottest topics that the mining industry is currently facing ? climate change and the new energy economy. A changing political landscape in Colorado, as well as in Washington D.C., has given rise to questions about the economic future of the United States and the mining industry?s role in that future. While there has been a recent push away from traditional energy sources to a ?new energy economy? that is rich in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, the NWMC?s agenda emphasized the role that minerals will play in new energy technologies. The conference was also full of talks about the industry?s role in reducing the United States? reliance on foreign oil and other mineral commodities. To that end, an impressive lineup of speakers were invited to attend the three-day conference Feb. 8-11, in Denver, CO. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans and three of the four headliners, including Denver?s mayor and Democratic candidate for governor of Colorado, John Hickenlooper, were unable to get to the conference because of a massive blizzard on the East Coast locked them in Washington, D.C. However, with modern technology, a full auditorium heard presentations from Hickenlooper, National Mining Association (NMA) president and chief executive officer Hal Quinn and Glenn Kelly, vice president, government affairs for NMA. Republican candidate for governor of Colorado, Scott McInnis, did speak to the crowd in person.

"Early on Jan. 9, 2014, approximately 37,800 L (10,000 gal) of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal and is considered nonhazardous in terms of transportation, storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein and McWhirter, 2014).The spill site was located a little more than 1.6 km (1 mile) upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a "Do Not Use" order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a).With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the "Do Not Use" order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until Jan. 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below the approved level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at sub-ppb concentrations, a fact that undoubtedly added to growing public concern (Rosen et al., 2014; Gallagher et al., 2014). In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until Feb. 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAW, 2014b), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAW, 2014c)."

Large reserves of feldspar ore exist in the Aegean region of Turkey. The main colored impurities in these ores are iron- and titanium-bearing minerals such as anatase, rutile, sphene and ilmenite. In this study, a potassium feldspar ore containing mainly quartz and coloring impurities was subjected to beneficiation tests involving magnetic separation and flotation, which were applied either separately or in combination. Bench-scale flotation experiments using cationic collectors G-TAP and Flotigam V-4343 and using HF and H2SO4 as modifiers were employed to separate feldspar from quartz and to remove part of the titanium impurities. The best results were achieved with a combination of high-intensity wet magnetic separation and flotation. A feldspar concentrate containing 16.28% Al2O3, 10.75% K2O, 2.84% Na2O, 69.97% SiO2 and 0.16% Fe2O3 was produced. A quartz concentrate containing 2.30% Al2O3, 0.48% K2O, 0.42% Na2O, 0.07% Fe2O3 and 96.20% SiO2 was also obtained

Flotation’s earliest patent was issued in 1860. However, the process was first applied commercially in Australia until 1904, and in Montana in 1911. Major advances followed both in reagent treatment and in cell design, with resulting process improvements. Mechanical cells have seen the widest use and with the major increases in plant capacities (Fig. 1) their volumes have also increased (Fig. 2). In 1991, the principal use for the process was to produce copper concentrates for smelting. It was applied to 243 Mt (268 million st) of copper ore. The total of all ores floated that year was 426 Mt (470million st). In 1997, US mines produced 257 Mt (284 million st) of copper ores for flotation, yielding1.75 Mt (1.94 million st) of copper.

"The undertakings described in the paper titled “Study on correlation of quantified coal rank with self-heating temperature” by Wang and Luo in the November 2015 issue of Mining Engineering (Wang and Luo, 2015) are mathematically sustainable and an acceptable extension of work performed by Smith and Lazzara (1987) for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The paper is not an accurate explanation of the currently accepted leading practice for determining the propensity of a coal seam for spontaneous combustion. The paper could lead a practitioner to an oversimplified conclusion on how to determine the propensity of a coal seam to spontaneously combust.The spontaneous combustion of coal is a complex and not fully understood reaction. What is understood is that many more factors other than selfheating temperature (SHT) and coal rank are required to sufficiently evaluate the risk of spontaneous combustion in a particular coal seam. A superficial assessment can lead to an improper response to the risk. Some statements on the next steps through an appropriate literature search would have made the authors’ conclusions more credible.The SponCom 2.0 software, updated by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) in 2011, provides a path for evaluating the susceptibility of a coal seam to spontaneous combustion. In addition to proximate and ultimate analyses to establish coal rank, and therefore an estimate of SHT, the program includes the history of heatings, friability, seam thickness, overburden thickness, rider seam presence, pyrite presence, face and butt cleat densities, geothermal source presence and other geological features in the assessment. Mining conditions including floor heave, rib sloughage and rate of advance are also assessed to conclude a propensity for spontaneous combustion."

The trapezoidal tapered ring method has made significant progress in recent years for shielded-TBM projects, excavating tunnels with high overburden, strict water tightness criteria, and multiple curve alignments. The selection of compatible tapered rings is critical for successful advancement of the tunnel, assuring efficient installation of rings, as well as prevention of ring damage and excessive leakage. Using experience from the Arrowhead Tunnels Project, this paper describes guidelines for ring selection in tunnel curves, geometric analyses that comply with criteria principals, and provides techniques developed to determine the appropriate relative key position.

Eighteen coarse taconite tailings samples were collected in 2000-2001 from five western Mesabi Range taconite (iron ore) operations located in northern Minnesota, i.e., EVTAC, Hibbing Taconite (Hibtac), USX Minntac, Ispat Inland (Minorca), and National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC), to test their physical, geological, chemical, and mineralogical properties [Zanko, L.M., Niles, H.B., Oreskovich, J.A., 2003. Properties and aggregate potential of coarse taconite tailings from five Minnesota taconite operations, Minnesota Department of Transportation, Local Road Research Board, St. Paul, MN, Report No. 2004-06 (also as Natural Resources Research Institute technical report, NRRI/TR-2003/44)]. The goal was to assemble a body of technical data that could be used to better assess the potential of using a crushed taconite mining byproduct like coarse tailings for more widespread construction aggregate purposes, primarily in roads and high¬ways. An important part of the mineralogical assessment included X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses and microscopic (polarized light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, i.e., PLM, SEM, and TEM, respectively) evaluation of the size and shape (morphological) characteristics of potentially respirable microscopic mineral particles and fragments. Quantitative mineralogy, based on XRD analyses, showed that the dominant mineral in all samples was quartz (55-60%), followed by much smaller amounts of iron oxides, carbonates, and silicates. Specialized microscopic analyses and testing performed by the RJ Lee Group, Monroeville, PA, on both pulverized (-200 mesh, or 0.075 mm) and as-is sample composites showed that no regulated asbestos minerals or amphibole minerals were detected in the western Mesabi Range samples. A small number (26) of non-asbestos and non¬amphibole mineral cleavage fragments/mineral fibers were detected by SEM out of 1000 fields analyzed, but most were identified as min¬nesotaite and talc, silicate minerals common to the Biwabik Iron Formation. Amphibole minerals, absent in coarse tailings samples from the five western Mesabi Range taconite operations, were present in a single eastern Biwabik Iron Formation sample collected in 2003 for Lake County from the Cliffs Northshore operation in Silver Bay, MN. Importantly, the Superfund Method for the Determination of Releasable Asbestos in Soils and Bulk Materials [United States Environ¬mental Protection Agency (USEPA), 1997. Superfund method for the determination of releasable asbestos in soils and bulk materials, EPA 540-R-97-028, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington], as modified by Berman and Kolk [Berman, D.W., Kolk, A.J., 2000. The combined findings suggest coarse tailings and other taconite mining byproducts should be treated with the same common sense safety and industrial hygiene approach practiced for all mineral-based materials that have the potential to generate respirable dust. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Sulfide tailings from past and present mining activities are important hosts of critical elements and precious metals. This review paper presented a literature survey on the recovery practices of some critical minerals containing Te from sulfide tailings with a special focus on the physical beneficiation and hydrometallurgical separation methods. Finally, a conceptual framework and possible processing flowsheets were proposed. The findings of this review will be useful for the researchers in the field of geochemistry, mineral processing, and metallurgy to evaluate the separation processes for reprocessing of mine tailings for the recovery of critical minerals.

When a fan or blower breaks down or becomes worn, customers have two choices. They can replace it or they can have it repaired. In the past, replacement was the preferred option, especially when the equipment was severely damaged or worn. Now, however, customers are discovering the benefits of repairing or rebuilding. Even when the cost of repair is more than 60 percent of the cost of a new fan, customers are choosing the repair option. The cost savings can range from 20 percent to 80 percent. In many cases, the quality of the repaired part or component will exceed the quality of the original. This is because repair engineers have an advantage over the original designers. They can see how the existing fan performed — or failed to perform — in a specific application.
