Coal produced in underground mines is transported to the surface by means of conveyor belts throughout long roadways. The combustion of belts puts a large number of employees at great risk. Underground collieries differ from other underground mines -due to the combustible nature of the product. The most prevalent cause of belt fires in underground coal mine is spontaneous combustion due to oxidation of the coal, which also enables the conveyor belt to burn over time. In 2014, a belt fire in an underground coal mine in Manisa-Soma, Turkey caused 301 fatalities. A study has been conducted on this accident for approximately 3 years, consisting of combustion tests in a purpose-built research gallery, comparison of the test results with mine records of the accident, and CFD modelling of the mine environment. The intensity of the fire was sufficient to redirect the air flow underground, causin large amounts of toxic gases to fill almost the entire mine in approximately 15 minutes. It is recommended that CFD analysis be used in planning emergency action strategies in underground mines.

"In a technologically advanced era, where process control is accurately maintained within the smallest error margins, and accuracy and precision are continuously improved, sampling is still left to the lowest paid employee in the company without training him or her properly to understand the relevance and importance of the task. In this paper the objectives of sampling in a process control environment is discussed and an attempt is made to link it to the theory of sampling. Some of the practical problems associated with implementing theoretical sampling principles in an industrial environment will be elucidated and some examples given on how compromises are made. Different methods of sampling will be discussed with real life examples from different manufacturing industries."

The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET’s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialized in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET’s programme in mechanization and automation for narrow-vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies(Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow-vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. In particular, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow-vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators’ needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The paper will present the objectives of the narrow-vein mining project and some of the results, including the web site developed to present the results of the project.

The University of Kentucky (UK), with an enrollment of 25,891 in fall 2002, is a comprehensive, public land-grant university located in the Bluegrass Region of Central Kentucky. As the State’s flagship university, UK has long been involved in distance education, first through traditional correspondence courses, followed by use of videotape and satellite delivery in the 1970s and1980s, but soon supplanted by use of interactive television (ITV) and on-line course delivery in the 1990s to date. Today, UK Distance Learning Programs annually administers approximately600 course sections, with services provided to over 5200 enrollees. Courses are offered via six media: interactive video, Internet, on-site, satellite, open-air and cable television, and videotape, with hybrid delivery becoming increasingly popular. The University of Kentucky College of Engineering experience with distance instruction prior to 1985 was limited to videotape non-credit offerings. The Department of Mining Engineering, a small department in terms of numbers of both faculty and students, was a University pioneer in distance education. The first University degree program offered in its entirety by distance delivery(initially by itinerant faculty) was the Master of Mining Engineering. Satellite delivery from Lexington to Cumberland, Kentucky, was a welcomed change of delivery mode in 1987–88,resulting in six hours less travel time for faculty each week. Shortly thereafter, other initiatives directed toward fulfilment of its land-grant mission were undertaken by the College. Use of satellite for course delivery rapidly declined due to limited interactivity, in favour of compressed video and on-site instruction. Classroom sites in the Kentucky Tele-Linking Network (KTLN) now number over 200. The Network links schools, colleges and universities, as well as public and private agencies throughout the State. The KTLN supports voice, video, and data transmission in a uniformly-equipped environment. Beginning in the early 1990s, transfer-critical pre-engineering courses were delivered from Lexington to Kentucky’s community colleges with the largest pre-engineering enrolments. Success was limited, but lessons learned were invaluable. In 1996, the University of Kentucky College of Engineering was asked by the Kentucky Council on Higher Education (the predecessor to the Council on Postsecondary Education) to expand engineering education in Kentucky, first by initiating cooperative B.Sc. degree programmes in Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering on the campus of Paducah Community College (PCC), located 400 km from the UK campus in Lexington. The third partner in these programmes is Murray State University (MuSU), a public regional comprehensive university 80 km south of Paducah. The genesis of the new degree programmes, which were subjected to ABET review in October 2002, as well as a summary of the major accomplishments and challenges of the innovative programmes, will be offered. The limited use of distance technologies for course delivery in these B.Sc. degree programmes will be discussed. A ‘no-spin’ overview of other non-traditional distance-learning ventures within the College of Engineering will be chronicled, with an honest assessment of the motivation for these efforts and, where appropriate, their relative degree of success. Among these ventures are: a BScME and a Master of Engineering programme at Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky, Georgetown, Kentucky; course exchange in Chemical Engineering between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville; an ITV-based Master of Engineering programme for practicing engineers in Kentucky; proposed joint-degree programmes in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering with Western Kentucky University; and a proposed part-time MScME programme in Paducah, Kentucky, with a start date of August 2002, threshold enrolment permitting. The corrosion properties of iron-based composite materials containing graphite and silicon carbide (SiC) reinforcement were investigated. The effects of silicon carbide reinforcement were investigated by adding 0.5% graphite and 1%, 2%, and 4% SiC. A powder metallurgy method was used to produce the composite samples. Iron, graphite, and silicon carbide powders were blended for one hour with a threeaxis mixer and then unidirectionally pressed under a pressure of 750 MPa. After pressing, the composite materials were sintered at 1100°C for one hour. The corrosion properties and microstructure, density, and hardness properties of the composite materials that can affect the corrosion properties were also investigated. It was determined that the pore ratio and hardness of the composite material increased, and corrosion resistance decreased, with increasing silicon carbide content.

Hillendale Mine is operated by Exxaro KZN Sands, and is situated on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa near the towns of Empangeni and Richards Bay, some 200 km north of Durban. During the mining operation the heavy minerals rutile, ilmenite, zircon and leucoxene are extracted for further beneficiation at a processing complex near the town of Empangeni. The deposit contains approximately 25% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction), and is mined using hydraulic monitoring. Run of mine is gravity fed down launders to pump stations, which deliver the material to a primary wet plant. Slimes is separated from the run of mine prior to the heavy minerals being separated from the sand. Sand tails containing approximately 2-5% slimes is pumped to the mining void. The slimes is thickened to a density of approximately 1.2, and most of the resultant material is pumped to a sub-aerial deposition site (residue dam). The area is characterized by an annual rainfall of approximately 1300 mm, which is relatively high by South African standards. From an agricultural perspective the soils are deep and well weathered. Dryland agriculture has been practised on an extensive scale in the area for the past 70 years. Sugar cane in particular is cultivated on and around the mine area. In terms of environmental approvals, the post-mining land use and objectives are defined as economically viable and sustainable sugar cane cultivation in the mined areas. During mining the soil profile is destroyed. In this paper the establishment of a reconstituted soil profile is discussed, with specific reference to the methodology that is being followed to achieve the homogeneous blending of sand and slimes. Defining the rehabilitation strategy and soil specification Strategically Exxaro KZN Sands divided rehabilitation into four aspects, comprising physical rehabilitation (restoration of soil structure), vegetative rehabilitation (restoration of vegetative cover), ecological rehabilitation (restoration of sustainable ecological communities), and sustainability (sustainable man/environment interface) (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). It is believed that the key to successful rehabilitation lies in achieving a substrate (soil) suitable for the establishment of the target vegetation. During the development of the rehabilitation strategy the key factor in the establishment of a suitable soil profile was shown to be the soil water retention of this material. Since dryland agriculture is practised, this aspect becomes critically important in ensuring that the post-mining land use is sustainable (Hattingh et al., in prep.). From a financial perspective, a closure certificate being issued implies that the state takes over financial liability for the rehabilitated land. This has significant implications for the state-the default position will be that all possible latent and residual impacts must be identified and known prior to a closure certificate being issued. From the mine's perspective this precautionary approach by the state implies that post-operational costs cannot be quantified exactly, and our approach is therefore to mitigate the risk of a long post-closure care and maintenance phase by means of addressing all potential latent defects during the operational rehabilitation phase. The financial viability of the soil reconstitution process itself is therefore not measured against other rehabilitation methods, but against the risk of not achieving closure. During a series of technical workshops comprising experts in the various disciplines in the rehabilitation of the soil profile were identified. These aspects include the re-establishment of a functional soil profile, soil physical characteristics, soil chemistry, soil biota, salinization potential, erodibility and soil weathering. The natural soils in the Hillendale area have been classified in terms of the South African soil classification system (MacVicar and co-workers, 1991) and consist of Hutton (orthic topsoils on red apedal subsoils) and Clovelly (orthic top soils on yellow apedal subsoils) soil forms. The topsoils consistently comprise medium to fine grained sand overlying heavier textured sandy clay loam to clayey subsoils. The topsoil structure consists of a single grain structure, whereas subsoils are apedal. These soils are typically deeply weathered and do not show secondary structures. During the mining process a layer of topsoil (300 mm) is stripped off, and the balance of the material down to the footwall is processed. Sand with 2-5% slimes (defined as the sub-45 micron fraction) is returned as backfill in order to re-establish the dune to approximate the previous landform. From an agricultural perspective this material is not suitable for the dryland cultivation of sugar cane. A capping of more suitable material therefore has to be provided. The most significant difference between the premining soil form and the backfill material is the percentage slimes, consequently a mixture of the sand and slimes is required as a capping over the backfilled sand. The required thickness of the cap is a function of specifically plant growth requirements, erodibility, weathering and runoff (Hattingh, et al.; in prep.). The percentage slimes required in the cap is a function of mainly soil water requirements (Hattingh and Viljoen, 2006). The conservative indications to date show that the reconstituted soil profile should consist of a homogeneously blended mixture of 70%-80% sand and 30%-20% slimes up to a maximum of 2 metres thick. This will be sufficient to ensure growth during dry periods.

The use of dilute sulphur dioxide (SO2) gas mixtures for the oxidation/precipitation of manganese has been explored widely in recent years. The technical merit of the concept is well proven and implementation of the technology on commercial scale is imminent. This paper reviews the technology of manganese removal by means of dilute SO2 gas mixtures and highlights some of the challenges associated with its implementation on industrial scale. A brief review of the technology is presented; the review considers both the mechanism and chemistry of manganese oxidation/precipitation with dilute SO2 gas mixtures. The impact of variables such as temperature, pH and SO2 concentrations on the manganese removal process is assessed. Challenges associated with implementation of the technology on industrial scale are discussed. Gas dispersion is highlighted as a critical design consideration.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the ?fine? and ?coarse? size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: ? Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery ? Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery ? Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for ?fine? and ?coarse? particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

Hochtief AG Germany has developed a comprehensive management and information system for the construction industry named Aristoteles. This system is an efficient supporting tool to manage a variety of construction sites as well as operating business units with required economic targets. As such, Aristoteles offers wide-ranging control of complex economic processes in construction in a consistent manner. In this paper the process oriented functions of the system will be described with special emphasis on finance accounting and cost control. The basic elements in this respect are tender estimation, creation of initial project budgets and running budgets, regular determination of work done and result forecast to the end of the project. Further, cost accounting, monthly reporting, and all balance-related postings are included. On the basis of the extensive reporting (targeted/actual cost comparison, cost manager, project report, actual/targeted hours worked comparison, overhead cost report, amendment report or project (result) lists of all projects realized by one business unit), the responsible managers can make justified project evaluations, project controls and variance analyses during the project period and derive appropriate management measures. Thus, Aristoteles includes all substantial elements for the risk management of the operational business. In big construction joint-stock companies it is of crucial importance to satisfy the information requirements of the investors. In this respect the system provides a transparent presentation of the financial, investment and profitability situation of the company. In the international construction industry the balancing rules according to IAS (International Accounting Standards) have already been used to a larger extent. In accordance with these rules the partial profits of the work during execution can be shown as realized even before completion of a long-term contract. The validity of Aristoteles will be outlined briefly. Major advantages using the system are highly enhanced accuracy of project controlling, systematic overhead allocation to projects, change of attitude of the project personnel due to increased cost consciousness and improved flow of information within the company.

Submerged arc furnaces (SAF) are used extensively in the production of ferrochrome, where charge material – consisting of mixtures of carbonaceous reductants, fluxes such as silica, and ore in the form of pellets – is fed through chutes into the vessel. The feed typically forms a thick bed or ‘burden’ of solid particulates above a bath of molten material below. This burden layer surrounds three electrodes, which are typically arranged in a triangular configuration in circular SAFs. A major challenge in the industry is the availability of sought-after reductants, volatile market conditions, and increasing electricity tariffs in South Africa. A good understanding of the physical properties of the raw materials in the charge is therefore of great value in order to best deal with the reductants available at any given time, and thereby maximising furnace throughput. This paper presents a study of the effects of different particle properties on particle flow behaviour relevant to SAF operations. Discrete element model (DEM) simulations were used to estimate the sensitivity of the particulate flow of beds of charge material to properties such as the coefficients of friction, particle shape and size, and others. The present study lays the groundwork for the development of full DEM models of the SAF that will greatly improve understanding of the flow of complex mixtures of solid particles in the submerged arc furnace, and how the relative physical properties of each component in the charge can influence electrical behaviour of the burden.

"In coal mining in China, the cutting height of the shearer in longwall faces is increasing. Owing to the increase of extraction height, the caved roof strata area is enlarged, and new issues are being encountered, such as determination of a suitable working resistance for the shield and control of the roof. Through field observation and theoretical analysis of the first longwall face with a height of 6.0 m in the Bayangaole mine, a three-stage structural model was developed. Stage I is defined as the period in which the lower immediate roof (LIR) caves into the goaf and is broken into irregular shapes of various sizes. Stage II is defined as the period in which the upper immediate roof (UIR) breaks and impacts the LIR. In stage III, the main roof breaks into blocks and then impacts the UIR. With respect to these three stages, a suitable method was identified for calculating the working resistance of the shield support for a super-great mining height longwall face (SGMHLW). Introduction and backgroundThe coal seams in the Shendong coalfield, located in the northwest of China, are characterized by low dips and large thicknesses and are thus suited for full thickness extraction. Since the mid-1990s, the Shendong coalfield has been developed into one of the largest in the world (Ning, Liu, and Tan. 2014; Ning et al., 2017). Recent developments in mining equipment have made it possible extract entire seams up to 5.0 m thick in a single cut. This method, termed the ‘super-great mining height longwall face’ (SGMHLW) method, has been widely adopted in the Shendong coalfield (Table I) (Ju and Xu, 2013; Peng, Li, and Zhou 2015; Zhang, Fan, and Ma 2011). According to some studies, sudden support-closure incidents often occur when using the SGMHLW method. The key to solving this engineering issue is to have a clear understanding of the structural characteristics and movement laws of the overlying strata. For instance, the load on the supports is related to the movement of the roof stratum as a response to the mining activities."

INTRODUCTION The shovelling of rock in stopes is still a basic and important operation in many gold mines in the removal of gold-bearing rock from the stopes. There is, however, little factual knowledge of the factors which influence the the rates of energy expenditure and work output, and of the way in which variations in these factors, individually or in combination, affect the mechanical efficiency of the mine workers. What for example is the influence of different rates of shovelling, shovel loads and distances of throw? How does stope width and dip of the stope affect the mechanical efficiency of men shovelling rock? Recently a simple physiological test was introduced into the gold mining industry for classifying Bantu recruits into those capable of hard, moderate and light work. If this test is used to select only those Bantu mine workers who are capable of hard work for the task of shovelling rock in stopes then the rate of energy expenditure which could be expected from these men is 1.5 litres/min for the entire period of the shift. With an adequate knowledge of the influence of the various factors which affect the rate of energy expenditure of men shovelling rock in stopes it would be possible to set work standards for Bantu mine workers in stopes. This should be done in terms of the rate of shovelling, the shovel load and the distance of throw for any combination of width of stope, dip of stope, condition of foot wall and grade of rock in such a way that the resultant energy expenditure would be the 'optimum' that could be expected from the men but would be within their capacities for physical work of an endurance nature (that is, 1. 5 litres/min from the 'average' Bantu mine worker). Work standards could thereby be determined for the different stopes of a mine on a sound and systematic basis. In order to supply the information required a study was carried out by the Human Sciences Laboratory in which the work output and energy expenditures (in terms of oxygen consumption in litres/min) were measured on six highly trained Bantu mine workers under the following conditions: (a) rates of shovelling of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 shovels per minute. (b) loads of from 9 to 18 lb on the shovel. (c) distances of throw from 8 to 20 ft. (d) stope width of 28 in., 42 in. and 72 in. (e) dip of stopes of 0°, 15° and 30°. (f) rough and smooth footwalls and various grades of rock size. This paper gives the main results of practical importance of this study. Method The experiments were designed and conducted in conjunction with the Work Study Department of one certain underground conditions such as variable stope widths, stope angle, etc., were made available in a mine Surface Training School and suitable subjects were selected from the large number of labourers being put through the training school. Subjects Bantu recruits who had returned to the mine for a new contract and who had previous underground experience on shovelling were considered to be suitable as subjects for the experiments. The particulars of the subjects are given in Table I. After the technique was mastered, the men started shovelling rock and were trained for at least four hours per day to work at the higher shovelling rates. Training was continued for three weeks to enable the subjects to achieve a reasonable degree of physical training and conditioning. Shovelling method In both the kneeling and standing positions the subjects faced the pile of rock, grasped the shovel in the accepted manner and pushed the blade of the shovel into the base of the pile of rock, sliding the blade between the rock and the concrete floor. In the standing position (72 in. wide stope) the back leg assisted in the movement by pushing the knee against the back of the hand holding the shovel handle. The results are reported of experiments on the influence of a number of variables on the rate of loading of gold cyanide onto activated carbon and the equilibrium capacity of the carbon. These variables include the concentrations of gold and free cyanide in solution, the pH value and ionic strength of the solution, the concentration of organic compounds in the solution, the temperature, the particle size of the carbon, and the mixing efficiency. The experiments were carried out under approximately steady-state conditions to simulate the conditions in a countercurrent carbon-in-pulp absorption plant. In addition, the results are reported of experiments to establish whether the absorption of gold cyanide onto activated carbon is a reversible process.

OBITUARY The President: "It is my sad duty to announce the death of Henrik Johannes Van Eck, Honorary Life Member, who joined the Institute in 1929 and passed away on 18th February, 1970. Dr van Eck started life as a chemist and chemical engineer and, as we all know, he rose to become one of our most distinguished leaders of industry in the country. On many important occasions we, in this Institute, have been privileged to have him address us on subjects which were always of great importance and relevance to the developments in this country. He was a man of great vision and imagination and could put across his ideas in a most eloquent and convincing manner. In his important position as chairman of the Industrial Development Corporation and of Iscor, whatever he said carried great weight. Busy as he was he always found time to participate not only in the affairs of this Institute but in many other technical and public bodies. His passing is a great loss to South Africa and we in this Institute wish to associate ourselves with the many other tributes which have been paid to this great man. We extend our sympathy to his wife and family and as a mark of respect I would ask you to rise and observe a few moments silence." PAPERS FOR PRESENTATION The President: (i) "Mr Lee, may I call on you to deliver your paper entitled 'A new bubble pick-up technique as a rapid flotation test method'." After the presentation of the paper the President said: "The paper which Mr Lee introduced this afternoon was a short one but was nonetheless important in that it described a new tool for use in flotation test work. Those of us who have experienced the frustration of trying to solve flotation problems by trial and error methods know what this means. I well remember 25 years ago at T.G.M.E. trying to improve the recovery from the flotation plant there by trying various combinations of reagents and then having to wait a couple of days for the assay office to give results. Even then, on the small scale laboratory tests which had to precede full scale tests one could never be sure that the results obtained were reproducible on the full scale. Here it seems we have a relatively simple apparatus which can measure instantly the effectiveness of various reagents under different concentrations and pH values, etc. It is most important, I believe, that developments of this kind be reported in our journal for the benefit of all involved in such work, not only so that we know about it but also in order to provoke constructive discussion which might lead to further developments. The Zinifex Century Mine employs a large number of Detritor mills for fine and ultra-fine grinding to liberate silica and sphalerite at 80 per cent passing 7.5 microns before final zinc flotation. A joint project between CSIRO Minerals and the Zinifex Century Mine was carried out to evaluate the Detritor mill performance. Plant surveys were conducted around the Detritors in conjunction with laboratory tests. The survey data showed that the Detritors in the ultra-fine milling circuit performed well. They reduced a feed F80 sizing of 46 microns to a product P80 sizing of 7.5 microns at a gross energy consumption of 37.2 kWh/t. Scale-up of ultra-fine milling Detritors was studied using a 0.55 kW laboratory batch unit and a 355 kW full-scale Detritor by processing Century zinc concentrate with 1 mm sand media. The results indicated that the 0.55 kW laboratory mill underestimated the energy consumption of the full-scale Detritor by about 20 per cent for a product P80 of seven microns. The performances of a horizontal IsaMill and a vertical Detritor were compared as ultra-fine milling devices for processing Century zinc concentrate. The experimental data demonstrated that, when using the same grinding media, the energy efficiency of the two mills is similar despite the difference in mill designs. The Detritors used for regrind duty at the Century Mine performed poorly when processing feed at 80 per cent passing 88 micron. The energy consumption was high and the product size distribution was broad with particles above 100 microns in the feed unbroken and particles below ten microns overground. A coarser ceramic media of 3 mm was therefore tested in a laboratory Detritor to process the regrind Detritor feed as an alternative to the 1 mm Colorado sand used at the Century Mine. The ceramic media reduced the energy consumption significantly and produced a narrower product size distribution, which is more desirable for the downstream flotation process.

Previously, the grade of ore at the shaft head was taken to be equivalent to the grade measured in the faces by means of chip sampling. The tonnage mined from the stopes is determined from survey volumetric measurements. Estimates of shaft head grade and tons include the grades and tons of waste, development ore, sweepings from old areas, and other sources, not all of which are sampled. The tonnage of ore delivered at the shaft is often estimated using skip factors. These factors are subject to manipulation and not all the skips are filled to the same level. Consequently, both the grade and tonnage of ore delivered at shaft head are subject to a measure of uncertainty. For many years, these uncertainties have led to disputes between shaft managers and metallurgists over the reconciliation between shaft tons and grade and plant tons and grade. These problems are compounded when several shafts feed a central processing plant. Shaft bonuses and a shaft?s profitability are affected by poor gold allocation methods. Without measurement of the grade and tonnage from all shafts, a poorly performing shaft could benefit at the expense of the other shafts. In order to improve the measurement of grades and tonnage at the shaft head, which is the custody transfer point between the mine and surface operations, South African mining companies have developed a methodology to measure the mass of ore from each shaft using rail weighing equipment, and the run-of-mine grades delivered from each shaft using cross-stream (go-belt) sampling. Harmony Gold Mining Company has implemented the rail weighing and go-belt sampling methods for their shafts. This paper deals with the statistical tests on the procedures and control measures that are in place to establish confidence in the gold allocations. The metal accounting system for examining the allocations follows the first principle of the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting Code of Practice namely ?The metal accounting system must be based on accurate measurements of mass and metal content. It must be based on a full check-in check-out system?. The check-in is mass and grade of run-of-mine ore and the check-outs are the plant input grades and the recovery and residue from the plant. The balances between check-in and check-out are the subject of the statistical analyses, which have been conducted using the classical statistical tests and procedures that are generally used in all fields of endeavour. It is concluded that the gold allocation procedures that rely on go-belt sampling and rail weighing of ore from shafts has been successfully implemented, and that the system, which has been in operation at Harmony since 1993, has won general acceptance from stakeholders, with the gold allocations being perceived as being fair to all. Apart from the on-mine issues of bonuses and fair allocations, accurate metal accounting assists in the broader issues of generating accurate production figures for management. An added benefit of weighing and sampling ore at the shaft head has been that shafts now have daily moving average grades, which are used for grade control. The go-belt sample at the shaft head is the first accurate sample of production in the value chain from face sampling to gold bullion. Waste Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) are a metals-rich fraction of electronic waste (e-waste) streams, and globally it has been demonstrated that they can be recycled gainfully to recover the metals. Reported successful cases of PCB recycling are carried out in large volumes, using high-level technology and high capital investment smelter house operations. This presents entry barriers for recyclers in developing economies where capital may not be accessible, and the waste volumes are not sufficient to warrant large scale operations. Hydrometallurgical processes have the potential to provide an option for the scalable processing of smaller volumes of PCBs and can be set up at relatively lower capital costs. However, to date, the hydrometallurgical treatment options available rely on precursor communition and classification processes that also require high capital and energy costs. This paper presents an overview of the work done under the Minerals to Metals signature theme towards understanding e-waste recycling processes and developing pre-processing and characterisation of PCBs in order to unlock potential for local end processing in developing economies, using South Africa as a case study. The structure of PCBs is reviewed, and the current size reduction techniques and the subsequent leaching processes are discussed. The Namakwa Sands heavy mineral deposit is located along the West Coast of South Africa and the mine is a world class producer of high quality zircon, ilmenite and rutile concentrates from essentially unconsolidated marine and aeolian sands of Cainozoic age. The objective of this study was to characterize rutile with respect to distribution, grain size, textures, colour and mineral chemistry within the Namakwa Sands orebody with the aim to explain its overall poor recovery. A representative suite of heavy mineral concentrates from various sections of the orebody and stages in the recovery circuit has been investigated microscopically and by means of SEM-EDS and LA-ICP-MS. The rutile grain size distribution displays a wide range and is directly related to its variable chemistry and consequently density. In placer deposits such as Namakwa Sands, mineral sorting is a function of hydraulic equivalence, and high density grains are smaller than the lighter grains when deposited under similar conditions. Grain size is also a function of sediment maturity, and the highly mature red aeolians and (RAS) component of the deposit has a coarser grain size than the less mature orange feldspathic marine sands (OFS). The above primary characteristics of rutile are responsible for the loss of the coarse-grained fraction during screening and, given the empirically determined relationship that increased substitution elements reduce conductivity, also during electrostatic separation. Provenance studies using geothermometry have shown that the heavy mineral suite has been sourced mainly by the proximal medium-to high-grade Namaqualand Metamorphic Complex. The positive relationship between substitution elements and temperature of formation explains their high concentration in rutile of this deposit. The heterogeneity of rutile, produced by the combination of a high temperature primary source and the typical marine-aeolian placer genesis is deposit specific and unfortunately not conducive to high recovery levels in the current Namakwa Sands beneficiation circuit.
