FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, reflect a healthy position and show that measures taken by Council over the last few years to boost income have been successful. A higher income was needed not only to meet rising costs but also so that the services provided by the Institute for its members could be expanded. This year's income of R55 025 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R48 307. Income from subscriptions was higher mainly owing to an increased number of Company Affiliates, and this is indicative of the support given by mining and metallurgical companies to the good work being done by the Institute. Further sales of publications of the symposia held over the last few years again made a useful contribution to income of R4560. The first Winter School held in 1973 yielded a surplus of R7495 after the expenses had been deducted from the income received from registration fees. The cost of administering the Institute increased by R2212 compared with the previous year. Included in this was a donation of R1000 to the A.S. & T.S. Trust Fund. The cost of publishing and printing the Journal increased by R2034, but advertising and extraneous sales of the Journal were higher, with the result that the net cost of the

Probability-based empirical methods were employed as an alternative approach to predicting uncertainties associated with rock mass properties. The focus was on developing probabilistic spreadsheets to forecast rock mass classification indexes. Histograms were constructed to describe the best distribution in predicting rock mass properties. The developed models also offer utility in predicting the impact of discontinuities within the rock mass on rock strength and rock mass classification systems. Statistical analyses identified volumetric joint count, joint spacing, joint frequency, and rock strength as the most influential parameters. Moreover, the statistical analysis revealed varying degrees of correlation among different rock mass properties. While some properties demonstrated significant correlations suitable for modelling, others did not align well with any correlation model. The results highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to rock mass characterization, considering multiple factors beyond volumetric joint count. Geological complexities, including tectonic activity and weathering processes, may obscure direct correlations. These results emphasize the importance of empirical modelling and detailed site investigations for accurate assessment of rock mass quality and stability in the Himalaya.

Land rehabilitation transcends the mere establishment of vegetation across disturbed landscapes; it should be conceptualised as a specialised ecological reconstruction process. This process necessitates a long-term perspective on the success of land repurposing. It requires a continuum of inputs specified and managed by a dedicated and qualified custodian to ensure the sustained economic viability and ecological sustainability of the land. Based on the authors’ combined experience and field observations over more than five decades, they advocate for an urgent shift away from traditional land rehabilitation practices toward a paradigm centred on land capability reconstruction and active stewardship. The prevailing rehabilitation culture has overly simplified the process to a mere revegetation exercise, which is fundamentally incompatible with the comprehensive requirements for sustainable land capability. While the regulatory framework provides valuable guidance for obtaining a mine’s social license to operate, a paradigm reset is essential. Mining companies must prioritise rehabilitation quality, set achievable sustainability goals, and establish clear pathways and milestones to meet relinquishment criteria. Currently, the status quo view—a model reliant on outsourced contracting and agricultural approaches—is that mine rehabilitation is a one-time intervention rather than a complex, systemic, and long-term process. This perspective presents significant challenges, as the success of ecological interventions can only be accurately assessed over extended timeframes, often spanning decades. Shortsighted rehabilitation specifications, coupled with practitioners operating within agricultural decision frameworks, frequently overlook the necessity for integrated rehabilitation expertise and the scientific foundation essential for designing and implementing effective ecological outcomes. A lack of long-term monitoring information impedes the required adaptive management of rehabilitated systems and, therefore, delays the transition towards final land use. This short approach costs the mining industry millions annually, often without recognising the inadequacies in long-term liability mitigation and the substandard ecological success achieved. The disconnect between procurement processes, the qualifications of service providers, and the unclear pathways to relinquishment can impede successful rehabilitation outcomes, frequently undermining progress toward sustainability milestones. Unless there is a fundamental reset of the land rehabilitation culture, pursuing sustainability will remain an elusive and perhaps impossible objective. Consequently, mining companies may hesitate to fully commit to sustainable land rehabilitation practices, as the prospects for relinquishment and final closure remain uncertain at best.

Enargite in porphyry copper deposits is an important mineral as it displays good floatability under the presence of the collectors usually used in the flotation of copper sulfides. As a result, copper concentrates grades are reduced. As scarcity of water resources is a problem relevant to Chilean mining, the use of seawater is a feasible solution. The behaviour of copper sulfides and molybdenite in the process of flotation in seawater was previously studied but not for enargite. The objective of this research is to study the behaviour of the enargite in different conditions of electrochemical potential during the process of flotation using seawater. The study was carried through micro-flotation tests using pure samples of enargite, at Eh values ranging from -300 to 500 mV(SHE), both in seawater and aqueous solutions containing calcium and magnesium. The results show that at pH 10.5 in seawater, the enargite and chalcopyrite recoveries are reduced throughout the whole range of Eh studied. At pH 9 in seawater, enargite and chalcopyrite are depressed under reducing and slightly oxidising conditions. The recovery of both minerals drastically decreases at Eh values lower than -100 mV and greater than 400 mV. The behaviour of enargite in seawater flotation differs from that observed in conventional water, since in the latter case the recovery of enargite decreases at higher potentials close to 500 mV. Surface coal operations in which mining activities are conducted above old underground workings experience hot holes after drilling. In a coal mine, hot holes are defined as shot holes, which after being drilled have an in-hole ambient temperature of 40°C or above or show a temperature increase of 3°C or more during monitoring. Hot holes and other cavities, such as cracks, pose health and safety risks to workers, such as exposure to hot air and high concentrations of noxious gases released from these holes. In addition, workers may be exposed to premature detonation of explosives caused by in-hole temperature increases and chemical reactions. To this end, Coaltech Research Association commissioned a project to develop a Best Practice Guideline for the management of hot holes. This paper is a compilation of the activities conducted in the development of the Best Practice Guideline between 2021 and 2022. The activities included a review of standard operating procedures and hot-hole temperature-measuring and -monitoring devices, and the assessment of current hot-hole procedures at selected mines. The results indicated that management of hot holes requires a focus on pre-emptive risk assessment of mining blocks, identification of hot holes using the correct temperature-measuring devices, and continuous monitoring of hot holes from the time of drilling until just before blasting. Hot-hole management accessories, such as polyvinyl chloride sleeves, were found to be effective in insulating the hot-hole emulsion from the rock mass temperature, thus preventing the potential for premature detonation.

"The South African ferrochrome industry has been faced with various challenges during the past few years, such as influences from the market, manpower strikes, China’s control over the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore from South Africa, and electricity supply constraints, placing increased pressure on the local industry to improve output in order to remain globally competitive. The year 2016 brought a dramatic change in the local ferrochrome industry, being marked by higher chrome ore prices and the takeover of some idle smelters.This study investigates the methods of technology acquisition used in various parts of the ferrochrome smelter value chain throughout a business cycle, and whether there is a preference for a specific acquisition in an explicit part of the value chain. The study also considers whether companies prefer to partner with local or global institutions for collaborative development, and the methods used by companies to protect their technologies.IntroductionSouth Africa holds the world’s largest chrome ore reserves and was the world’s largest producer of ferrochrome until 2012, when China became the leading ferrochromeproducing country. South Africa’s chrome ore (chromite) supply into the Chinese market has risen significantly from 36% of China’s total chrome ore imports in 2010 to more than 70% in 2016 (Fowkes, 2014; Creamer, 2017). China controls the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore from South Africa (Fowkes, 2014). China’s high import rate of chrome ore has resulted in ferrochrome prices being driven down and a depressed ferrochrome market. The South African industry meets the chrome ore demands but loses out on ferrochrome beneficiation.Furthermore, the local ferrochrome industry has been threatened with the overall poor competitiveness over the past few years, resulting in four of the eight producers ceasing operations at the beginning of 2016. Challenges experienced by the producers, some of which are directly linked to production costs, include influences from the market, productivity that was affected by wildcat strikes, China’s control over the demand for both ferrochrome and chrome ore, and electricity supply issues (Fowkes, 2014, 2013; Biermann, Cromarty, and Dawson, 2012). Ferrochrome production is energy-intensive and South African producers have faced higher electricity costs, electricity supply complications, and a weaker currency exchange rate since 2009."

Mineral processing plants, in general, consist of comminution and separation circuits. Rougher flotation is considered as the heart of the separation circuit with concentrate grade and mineral recovery being the key productivity and quality parameters that affect the downstream operations and profitability. Online prediction of these parameters can help improve process performance in real-time. Past efforts to predict flotation cell performance have focused on building physics-based or machinelearning (ML) based models. Although physics-based models are popular in process design applications, ML models are more appropriate for online monitoring, control and optimisation due to their lower computational requirements. Deep learning (DL) is gaining prominence nowadays for application in industrial operations where a large amount of data is available. We have developed a DL model based on long short-term memory (LSTM) neural networks to forecast the two key performance indicators (KPIs), namely, mineral recovery and concentrate grade in a mineral processing plant. Rougher feed characteristics such as mineral grade and particle size distribution, upstream measurable disturbances such as throughput of the comminution circuit and pulp density, and control variables such as aeration rate, pH, and collector addition rate are considered as explanatory variables to train the model. The model was tested with data from an industrial mineral processing plant. For real-time dynamic predictions, the trained model appropriately accounts for mismatch in measurement frequency of real-time process data and off-line laboratory analysis data. Such a time series model can be used as a state observer in model predictive control techniques for optimal control of unit operations in a mineral processing plant. The concentrations of selected trace elements (As, Cd, Hg, and Pb in run-of-mine (ROM) coal, discard, and coal product were investigated to assess the efficiency of beneficiation in reducing trace element concentrations and ascertain any implications regarding environmental compliance to regulatory frameworks. Samples were collected from a colliery in Mpumalanga Province twice a month for a period of 24 months. The samples were ashed to approximately 0.21 mm, then digested in a mixture of 70% HNO3 and 40% HF and analysed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Except for Pb, the mean concentration of all elements decreased from the ROM stage to the coal product stage. The order in which trace elements occurred from the highest to lowest throughout the production chain was Pb>As>Hg>Cd. With the exception of Cd, the mean trace element concentrations in the discard were above the total concentration threshold (TCT) set for landfill disposal. The As, Hg, and Cd concentrations in the product were well below the thresholds for all land uses. However, Pb concentrations in the product coal were above legal limits, which is of concern with regard to environmental compliance and the performance and marketability of the product.

The knowledge of the final location of a drillhole is critical in obtaining the expected blasting results. This paper proposes a new methodology to control the drilling accuracy in open-pit mines using aerial images and machine learning. Specifically, it investigates how support vector machines (SVM) and convolutional neural networks (CNN) are useful for automatically detecting blastholes over drone images captured in blasting patterns. Several datasets were obtained from different mines in Nevada (USA) and were used to train and test models. We then processed those images to create orthomosaic and digital elevation representations of the patterns. Thousands of patches were then extracted and augmented to develop SVM and CNN models. The results demonstrate that machine learning is useful for drillhole detection and, in this way, to control the drilling accuracy and use the explosive energy more efficiently.

To reduce the frequency of mining incidents and improve safety and production efficiency, it is important to develop technology for the autonomous positioning and navigation of mining equipment, without the assistance of satellite navigation signals. In this study we review the current technological environment for positioning and navigation underground and present several integrated navigation strategies. Existing underground positioning and navigation technology is described, and the performances of different methods based on this technology analysed and compared. The combination types and positioning effects of underground positioning and navigation strategies are discussed. Recent research directions for filtering methods and positioning estimation algorithms for underground positioning and navigation are reviewed. Finally, we summarize the future direction of underground positioning and navigation technology and related algorithms.

Effective communication is a sought-after non-technical skill in the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) function and is fundamental in achieving an organization’s safety objectives. While different channels are used to communicate HSE matters, many organizations employ posters, videos, and/ or signs containing images to convey information. Communication through signage and graphical hazard symbols has been regulated in standards, but vast sections of HSE communication are bespoke communications and exist outside the sphere of standards. Effective HSE communication through images requires an understanding of the organizational culture in which the images will be used, as well as an understanding of the semiotics of the images themselves. Creative interpretation within HSE communication can create situations where the message that was received is not the message that was intended, leading to confusion and misinterpretation. This paper is aimed at elucidating the semiotics of South African HSE visual content. It was found that the indexical mode of images was most preferred in visual communication, and text-only designs the least preferred. Senders and receivers of messages differ in their opinions on the complexity of HSE communication.

The density, porosity, and strength of rocks are fundamental in the design of geo-engineering projects. Determining these properties requires the preparation of smooth core samples, which is usually impossible for soft rocks. Besides, only fragmented samples may be available in some projects. A method for predicting rock properties from rock particles such as drilling debris would therefore be useful. This study was undertaken to develop prediction equations for compressive strength (UCS), tensile strength (BTS), density, and porosity values from the crushability index (CI) obtained from rock fragments. The results showed that UCS, BTS, density, and porosity were strongly correlated with the CI. The physical characteristics and strength of rocks may be predicted with the help of the derived equations. The CI test is a valuable tool for estimating rock properties in drilling projects and in situations where core specimens are not available.

"In platinum group metals (PGMs) smelting, the slag-to-matte ratios are very high (approximately 4:1 to 9:1). The slag temperature therefore has a strong influence on matte temperature, which is a continual concern due to the low matte melting temperature and its resultant high superheat. Maintaining a stable slag temperature is therefore a critical safety and operational issue. This project aims to improve the understanding of the slag bath temperature drivers so that a more effective slag bath temperature control strategy can be implemented.With the aim of developing a multiphysics model of the furnace, extensive data analysis was performed to develop an in-depth understanding of the process before the start of modelling work. In this work, the effect of fluctuating furnace feed composition on slag temperature was examined. The results are based on equilibrium calculations using FactSage, implemented with ChemApp.A method was developed, using an equilibrium calculation at 25°C, to convert the available chemical assays to approximate mineralogical assays in order to determine the feed enthalpies. Actual 2013 furnace feed data was used and the average specific energy requirement to produce slag and matte at 1600°C was calculated to be 671 kWh/t concentrate. The furnace energy input was then kept constant, and it was found that the slag temperature varies significantly as a function of the feed composition. These results were compared to actual slag temperatures measured on site. It was found that close management of the furnace energy balance is important for maintaining a stable slag temperature."

South Africa accounts for the largest global manganese ore production share, primarily from its Kalahari Manganese Field deposit. Despite this, domestic smelting is beset by energy constraints, resulting in most ore being exported for smelting. Mintek is investigating energyefficient pathways for ore reduction, specifically undertaking prereduction tests to reduce energy consumption for manganese smelting. The present contribution considers the effect of methane, anthracite, and holding time, at a fixed temperature, on the extent of reduction of Mamatwan-type ore, primarily from a mineralogical perspective. In particular, the aim was to carburise the monoxide Mn phase to Mn carbide, as this is less energy intensive than producing metallic Mn from the monoxide. Based on thermogravimetric test results, the ore and products from three experiment sets were analysed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy to assess the phases and textures present. The findings show that carburisation of manganese monoxide and its equivalents is most advanced under conditions of 8% anthracite, 10% methane, and 60 minutes of holding time, thus confirming with the thermogravimetric data. These results show promise for reducing energy consumption for Mn smelting in ferromanganese production.

"Conventional blasting rules of thumb used to develop blast designs are based on parametric ratios, with insufficient consideration of the rock mass factors that influence the achievability of final wall designs. At a hard-rock mine in Botswana, catchment berm designs were frequently unachievable, which exposed the mining operation to safety hazards such as local wallrock failure from damaged crests, frozen toes, and rolling rockfalls from higher mining levels. Increased standoff distances from the highwall reduced the manoeuvring area on the pit floor and the extraction factor that was safely achievable. Application of rock mass classification and the Blastability Index (BI) as a means to improve wall control was investigated. Zones were defined according to rock types forming the western highwall rock mass, and distinguishing rock mass classification factors were used to establish the suitable wall control designs. The approach combined rock mass classification methodologies such as the Geological Strength Index and the Rock Mass Rating, and related them to the BI and discontinuities of the rock mass to produce a design input tool that can be used to develop objective wall control designs. The designs driven by the tool inherently take into account the rock mass characteristic factors at the centre of the rock mass classification methods mentioned above, and significantly reduce the dependence on rules of thumb. It was found that this approach produces designs with explosive energy measures that are consistent with the required rock-breaking effort and the behaviour of discontinuities, while preserving perimeter walls.IntroductionBlasting is the first step in the comminution process. Various coordinated inputs contribute to its success, and in turn to the efficient execution of processes that lie downstream from the blasting step. Primary to meeting production and operational objectives of a mine, as well as the protection of human life and the mineral resource, is the achievement of highwall design specifications and competence. Currently lead nitrate is used as the recommended activator in Au-Sb flotation. However, due to high levels of hazard, the application of lead nitrate constitutes a potential risk for human health and ecosystems. To mitigate the harmful impact of activators on the environment, further research on activation by alternative reagents has been launched to promote the efficiency of antimony ores. In the present study, adsorption of lead, copper and zinc cations has been investigated by nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR), which has revealed copper and zinc cations penetration into the mineral lattice, although lead cations remain adsorbed on the mineral surface. However, the combination of zinc and copper cations leads to preferential volumetric adsorption of zinc in the mineral lattice and further surface adsorption of copper which positively affects the activation process. It has been established that activation of stibnite can be achieved effectively with the mixture of Cu2+:Zn2+=1:1 as much as with lead cations in antimony ore flotation. As a part of this work, the computational modelling has been used in prognosis of reagent activity evaluation (PRAE) for stibnite and aurostibite flotation by sulfhydryl collectors. The lower PRAE value the stronger the ability of a collector to form a stable complex with a mineral. PRAE has shown a strong negative trend to complex formation on the mineral surface of aurostibite and stibnite. Based on these studies, several collectors have been proposed for effective flotation. To verify the feasibility of proposed collectors tetramethyl (ethyl) thiuram disulfides (TMTD and TETD) have been used for flotation of stibnite, sphalerite, pyrite and arsenopyrite. Flotation performance has been improved significantly with TMTD that allows the avoidance of lead nitrate application and increases the recovery of antimony by 8,16%. "Sublevel caving in Malmberget mine results in mining-induced surface deformation. One of the currently mined orebodies is the Printzsköld orebody. As mining deepens there is need to assess the behaviour of the cave formed in the subsurface above this orebody. Numerical analysis was used to assess the effects of extraction to deeper levels and perform strength parametric studies. Stress redistribution was studied, and the results showed high stress buildups in the hangingwall and the crown pillar. Two failure mechanisms have been identified – shear and tensile. Reducing cohesion by 50% increased the area of the yielded zone by more than 100% in the hangingwall.IntroductionThe Malmberget mine is owned and operated by the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) mining company. Iron ore is extracted by large-scale sublevel caving. The mine comprises a total of 20 orebodies, about 10 of which are in production today (Figure 1). The mine is located in the municipality of Gallivare, about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle (Figure 2).Successful sublevel caving requires progressive caving of the orebody after initial blasting. This results in caving of the hangingwall, sometimes all the way to surface, resulting in surface deformation. As mining progresses to deeper levels a larger area is affected by deformation. Over the years, extraction from the Malmberget orebodies has led to deformation of the ground surface, affecting residential areas and existing infrastructure.Forecasting the caving process is not straightforward as it can be rapid or slow, depending on the rock mass conditions, stress conditions, the failure mechanisms at work, etc. Moreover, several of the orebodies in Malmberget are non-daylighting, which makes reliable caving analysis even more difficult, primarily since there is less available experience from such cases. "This article is devoted to the introduction of a new technique of electrical resistivity data processing called residual resistivity (RR). We define RR as measured resistivity minus background resistivity. To determine the background resistivity, the data acquired from electrical resistivity measurements along a given survey line is evaluated, and then an equation is fitted to the data corresponding to a chosen measurement station as a function of current electrode spacing (or array length). The RR technique was applied to several synthetic models to compare the conventional resistivity inversion of each model with its RR-based inversion. A case study was carried out in a karstic area in Zarrinabad, Lorestan Province, western Iran, to detect the location and geometry of probable cavities by conventional resistivity inversion and RR-based inversion. The results showed that the anomalous zones are better highlighted in the RR-based inversion images in comparison with the conventional inversion images. In some cases, anomalies detected by the RR-based images were hidden in the conventional method. IntroductionThe geoelectrical resistivity method has been widely used since the early 20th century, and plays an important role in several fields such as groundwater and subsurface mineral exploration, geotechnical and environmental investigations, and archeological studies (Bayrak and Senel, 2012; Candansayar and Basokur, 2001; Fehdi et al., 2011; Hee et al., 2010; Osella et al., 2003; Wilkinson et al., 2010). The goal of geoelectrical resistivity surveys is to determine the distribution of subsurface resistivity by measuring the current-potential difference on the ground surface (Aizebeokhai et al., 2010). In the electrical resistivity method, an electrical current is injected into the ground by two electrodes, called current electrodes (AB), and the potential difference is measured between another pair of electrodes, the potential electrodes (MN). Several methods of interpretation are available for application to electrical resistivity data, the simplest being the graphical interpretation of the apparent electrical resistivity pseudo-sections along each survey line. A second method, electrical resistivity inversion, has been developed to create relatively accurate two- and threedimensional computational resistivity models of subsurface sections (Loke and Barker, 1996; Niwas and Mehrotra, 1997; Nordiana et al., 2014; Oldenburg and Li, 1994; Papadopoulos et al., 2009; Yilmaz and Narman, 2014). In the inversion method, models of subsurface objectives are mathematically inverted to reach optimal solutions subject to prescribed objective functions, constrains, and convergence criteria. A common problem when using the electrical resistivity inversion method is that the inversion model of an electrical resistivity profile may be non-unique because different inhomogeneities in the investigation media can result in the same electrical response (Smith and Vozzof, 1984)."
