Fires in metal mines have resulted in some of the worst disasters in American mining history insofar as loss of life is concerned. One fire caused the death of 163 miners and individual less spectacular fires have cost the lives of scores of workers. Metal mines are often very deep, and the men working on numerous levels far removed from direct communication with the surface. In many instances they cannot be warned quickly of an emergency or a mine fire by telephone or other usual method of communication, or by messenger, flashing lights, gongs, sirens, or whistles. Telephones are not paricularly effective as a means of warning unless placed at all strategic points and with attendants always on duty; though telephones well placed have a definite value in any well-pla.mied emergency procedure in mines of all kinds. Messengers are slow and men working in remote parts of a mine would not receive a warning quickly enough. Most metal mines are not electrically lighted, except at or adjacent to shaft stations and in principal haulageways, and this limits the effectiveness of flashing lights. Electric gongs and sirens or whistles have been tried as warning signals, but the sound is quickly deadened and does not travel upward into the stopes, especially those of an extensive volume. Shutting off the compressed air is by no means satisfactory as a warning, as not infrequently it is stopped accidently, so that it loses its value as an alarm. The introduction of water into compressed air lines is undesirable as a fire warning and necessitates considerable care, especially in deep mines; pressure-reducing valves must be provided to reduce pressure that otherwise would break connections or split the pipe. A quick, effective method of warning miners underground of the existence of an emergency requiring them to leave the mine immediately, such as a fire on the surface or underground, is provided by the introduction of stenches in the compressed-air lines. "INTRODUCTION The rock-bit interaction during the cutting process in underground mines has been a matter of great concern to mining operators, researchers and manufacturers, particularly after the passage of strict environmental laws. Coal cutting bears directly on airborne coal dust generation and rock cutting generates frictional sparks which may cause face ignitions, jeopardizing the productivity, safety and economy of the industry. It is imperative to investigate into the factors which have influence on bit we.ar. Hurt and Evans (1981) concluded that the point attack bits have greater ignition potential than the conventional wedge shaped bits, and also worn bits were more responsible for ignition than the new bits. The results of a study (Khair et al., 1992) suggested that after 7% weight loss, the bit should be replaced. The polycrystalline compact diamond (PDC) tipped bits are reported to be cost effective in a study done by USBM (Twin Cities Research Center), and it was stated that the PDC tipped drill bits had 80 to 100 times longer life than the ordinary tungsten carbide (WC) tipped bits.This paper presents the results of the experiments which were conducted utilizing a coal cutting simulator at the laboratory of the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, USA. The description of the machine and the experimental set-up have been described elsewhere (Khair et al., 1989; Gehi & Khair, 1994), and therefore, will not be discussed here. The rock types which were used in experimen~ are Tennessee sandstone, Berea sandstone and Indiana limestone. The operating parameters include (1) drum speed, (2) water spray pressure and (3) bit type. Besides studying the wear characteristics influenced by the above mentioned variables, the effect of these parameters on the required cutting force, specific energy consumption, acoustic emissions rate and rise in temperature of the bit were also studied. A preliminary study was also done to compare we.ar characteristics of the WC bits with those of the poly-crystalline compact diamond tipped bits."

The large amount of computer code required for this simulation model dictates that reasonable limitations be placed on some of the input variables. The program permits the following maximum sizes: 1. Ten mine car stations 2. Twenty track intersections 3. Three hundred mine cars 4. Eight motors 5. One hundred profiles 6. Twelve intersections between stations 7. Forty-five profile changes between stations 8. Thirty station pairs (routes) These may be changed by the user providing the particular computer in use has available core storage. This paper , which describes mining methods and practices at the Mineral Hill copper mine , is one of a series being prepared by the Division of Minerals of the Bureau of Mines on mining methods , practices , and costs in various mining districts. of the United States . The Mineral Hill mine is situated on the northeastern piedmont of the Sierrita Mountains at an altitude of 3,650 feet in sec . 35 , T. 16 S. , R. 12 E. , and sec . 2 , T. 17 S. , R. 12 E. , Pima mining district , Pima County , Ariz . ( fig . 1 ) . The claims (figs . 2 and 3) are in a gently rolling area with only scant desert vegetation . The average annual precipitation is about 11 inches . The nearest surface water is the Santa Cruz River , an intermittent stream 8 miles east of the mine . The property is owned by the Banner Mining Co. , a Nevada corporation . This report presents a brief history of the mine , describes the geology of the area and the ore deposits , outlines methods of prospecting and exploration , and gives methods of sampling and the estimation of ore reserves and values . Development and stoping methods are explained , and methods of underground transportation , ventilation , mine drainage , and safety measures are described . The concluding section of the paper is a section on milling . The Mineral Hill mine is an old mine that was reopened in 1951 after having been closed for 30 years .

There are no active mines in the Mt. Eddy RARE II area. Chromite, gold, and stone prospects were examined. The RARE II area contains no identified mineral resources; however, a sample of a 260 ton occurrence contained 38.1 percent chromium oxide (Cr203) at the Ratero Prospect (fig. 1, no. 3), which has low potential for chromium resources. The Johnson Mine (fig. 1, no. 6) produced a small unrecorded amount of chromite during World War IT, but only a low potential exists for chromium resources. A low potential exists for gold resources at the Half Century Prospect (fig. 1, no. 2). At a borrow pit northwest of the study area (fig. 1, no. 1), sheared serpentinite is quarried for road metal; similar rock occurs in the RARE II area, but better material is more readily available elsewhere. Sand and gravel occurrences are too inaccessible and distant from markets to be considered resources. Mineral fuels and geothermal resources were not evaluated during this Bureau of Mines study. There currently are three unpatented lode mining claims in the study area. INTRODUCTION The Mt. Eddy RARE II area is 7 air-mi west of Mt. Shasta City, California, and straddles the Siskiyou-Trinity county line. The roadless area includes 7,200 acres of rugged, glacially carved, ridges and drainages which comprise Mt. Eddy. Elevations vary from 6,000 ft along the North Fork Sacramento River to 9,025 ft at the summit of Mt. Eddy. The area is covered with conifer forest below 8,000 ft elevation.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated all previously approved gas masks to determine their ability to provide respiratory protection against each of the following six selected amines: ethylenediamine, diethylamine, n-butylamine, ethylamine, methylamine, and hydrazine. Minimum requirements were a 24-minute service life at a flow rate of 64 liters per minute (32 liters per minute for hydrazine) and an amine concentration of 1.0 volume-percent (0.5 volume- percent for hydrazine). The three masks meeting these requirements were the LG4, Willson Products Division, The Electric Storage Battery Co.; the GMD-SS, Mine Safety Appliances Co.; and the 084-PHOV-R, Acme Protection Equipment Co.

In an effort aimed at monitoring mining-induced stress changes that may influence ground failure, the US Bureau of Mines conducted a series of active 3-D seismic tomographic surveys at the Homestake (Lead, South Dakota) and Lucky Friday (Mullan, Idaho) mines. Existing rock bolts were used to mount geophones and as strike points for introducing seismic energy using a 3.6 kg sledge hammer. Travel time measurements were recorded spanning up to 160 m between drifts at several levels. The tomographic uncertainty was minimized by computing iso-velocity surfaces of constant probability based on statistics from multiple reconstructions and a threshold criteria. Periodic imaging using tomographic velocity surfaces demonstrated that temporal and spatial changes in the local stress field occurred in response to ground failure and stope advancement at a gold and silver mine, respectively. "INTRODUCTION For a number of years the bureau of Mines has been engaged in the detection, recording and interpretation of earth- and air-transmitted disturbances, man-made and natural, related to mining operations. For the measure¬ment of such disturbances, special equipment was developed (1, 2, 3, 4, 8) 3/ and results of the measurements have been reported (5, 6; 7,9).In general, the ranges of amplitude end frequency of vibration encountered and recorded in the earth-transmitted disturbances were 0.00005 to 0.1 inch and 5 to 5,000 cycles per second; in the air-transmitted disturbances, pressures ranging from 0.001 to 100 pounds per square inch and 0 to 20,000 cycles per second were recorded.One characteristic of the earlier tests was that either the arrival time of the disturbance to be recorded was predictable or the recording speed was slow enough so that the record covered extended periods of time (for example, 4 hours). As the investigations continued, it became apparent that a recording device was required that would respond to transient vibrations arriving at indeterminate times and at the same time provide a permanent record of displacement or acceleration versus time on a scale that would permit the analysis of waves having frequency components up to 10,000 cycles per second. A film or paper speed of 720 inches per second was found to be adequate, as this provides approximately 3/4 inch of record for each 0.001 second."

This paper describing the method of mining a deposit of vanadium ore near Rifle, Colo., is one of a series of similar papers on metal-mining methods and costs being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines. This vanadium deposit probably is the largest yet found in North America. It is situated 12 miles northeast of Rifle, Colo. (see fig. 1), on the southern flank of tae White River plateau, and is at an altitude of 6,500 feet. Between 150 and 200 tons of ore are mined daily and trucked to the mill at Rifle. The product of the mill is fined vanadium oxide, which is shipped to the company's plaits at Columbiana, Ohio, and Niagara Falls, N. Y., for the electric manufacture of ferrovanadium. HISTORY The deposit was discovered about 1909 by men prospecting for carnotite. Its outcrop on the bola cliff of Rifle Canon had been known to stockmen for many years.

[The Anniversary-Bucky pegmatite is one of the largest, dikes in the Quartz Creek district, 21 miles east of Gunnison, Colo. The major dike consists of quartz-albite pear pagmatite and graphic granite with many quartz masses as individual cores occurring within the dike. A mining operation on one of the largest core areas has exposed several mineralogic cones directly associate with the core. These zones, including the large- units of the dike, are quartz pegmatitc, quartz-perthite pegmatite, perthite pegmatite, muscovite-feldspar -quartz pegmatite, quartz-albite pegmatite, and perthite-quartz (graphic granite) pegmatite. Muscovite and beryl are found in the muscovite-feldspar-quartz zone and are the only two products that have been marketed. Other potential products are perthite, graphic granite, and possibly small quantities of columbite-tantalite, monazite, and related radioactive minerals. The Bureau of Mines drilled two diamond-drill holes during April 1950 to investigate the largest and cost promising core area. This, report describes the results of this drilling.]

This report deals with the combined friction and suspension effects in the reinforcement of horizontally bedded mine roof by bolting. Other reports have treated these two effects separately. Friction effect refers to the reduction of bending in a laminated roof due to the clamping action of tensioned bolts. If the beds tend to have unequal deflections, the bolts oppose this tendency, thus creating a suspension effect, which consists of a transfer of part of the weight of weaker or thinner beds to the flexurally more rigid beds within the bolted unit. The combined effects of friction and suspension on the bending of the beds, whether an increase or a decrease, are difficult to generalize because they depend on the bedding sequence and the bolt pre-tension. Some analysis of the bedding sequence usually is required to determine the critical bed within a set of bolted beds. However, if the suspension effect is substantial and if the bolts are pre-tensioned, then the greatest bending stress is likely to occur in the thickest bed. Findings are based partly on theory and partly on tests of mine-roof models in a centrifuge, which were found to verify the theory. Mathematical formulas are obtained for the change in maximum roof bending stress and for the change of roof deflection due to the combined friction and suspension effects. The maximum bending stress is needed for designing a roof-bolting system and the deflection for evaluating its effectiveness.

Three types of communication systems have become popular in solving communication requirements underground: Loud-speaking pager phones, carrier current phones, and magneto ringing phones. Basically, all three are simply single-channel party line systems. Although these systems are quite reliable, the single channel creates a variety of problems. For example- 1. Since no call is confidential, messages are sometimes purposely made vague, especially if accidents or safety topics are being discussed. 2. A potential user must literally "wait in line" until the channel becomes clear for his use; thus, when foremen have to wait to call in reports or supply requests, this single chan-nel creates a serious productivity bottleneck. 3. In many large mines, there are independent branch lines that must be tied together by a dispatcher, adding further delays to the system. To solve these problems, some mines have installed other phone systems-mostly commercial dial phones in industrial enclosures that offer extra channel capacity and private line features. Others have installed a system that combines both dial- and page-phone features in a single unit. Although these do represent improvements, they do not truly solve the overall problems that face modern mines. Besides extra channels, a communication system should have the following features to enhance productivity and safety: 1. A means of paging a roving miner to alert him that he is wanted on the phone. 2. Wireless-to-wired system interconnects by which a miner can talk on the wired phone system by using a remote portable radio. 3. Remote monitors that alert personnel when there is a toxic or explosive gas buildup. 4. Control interfaces that allow remote control of fans, pumps, or other devices. 5. Transmitters and receivers that can serve as emergency links. 6. Loopback that allows an alternate path of communications if the main path is cut. This chapter focuses on equipment and methods to meet the special communication needs of individuals in various places of the underground mine. The communication requirements can be broken down into four categories: 1. The mine entrance (shaft communication). 2. Permanent and semipermanent locations (shop areas, lunchroom, crusher stations, etc.). 3. Mining areas (the room-and-pillar sections, longwall faces, block caving areas, etc.). 4. Haulageways (tracked trolley haulage, diesel, belt haulage). Methods of implementing systems to meet the communication needs of these areas are described in sections 3.2 through 3.5. Section 3.6 discusses methods of satisfying special communication requirements that exist. Major topics in this category include communications with roving personnel, the isolated miner, and motorman-to-snapper communications. This Bureau of Mines report describes photolineaments obtained from stereoscopic examination of vertical aerial photographs and by the Ronchi grating study of aerial photoindex sheets. The photolineaments are compared with the trends of oriented fracture systems procured by measuring the compass direction of joints in bedrock. The relative reliability of the methods is shown, and the results are presented in graphical, tabular, and written form. Analyses of field measurements of strikes of bedrock joints in the project area indicate for the most part two intersecting sets of major joints oriented N 76° W - N 15° E, and N 57° W - N 27° E. The analyses of lineaments determined by stereoscopic examination of aerial photographs show dominant trends of lineament zones of weakness to be an average of N 65° W - N 20°E. Analysis of lineaments found by Ronchi grid viewing of aerial photoindex sheets indicate dominant trends of N 70° W - N 27° E. The three methods give similar findings and verify the work of previous authors. The Ronchi grid method is a useful guide, but it cannot be substituted for the two more painstaking methods.

Anthracite from the four producing regions in Pennsylvania was both ashed in the laboratory and burned on a chain-grate stoker to determine the sulfur-retention properties of its ash. The retention of sulfur in laboratory-prepared anthracite ash was shown to be related to ashing temperature and to the amounts of sulfur and calcium present in the coal. At the usual laboratory ashing temperature of 750° C sulfur retention ranged from 0.8 to 13.2 percent of the total coal sulfur. Sulfur retention in the ash was negligible, o to 0.3 percent, at 1,200° C, which is the thermal decomposition temperature of calcium sulfate; thus calcium sulfate does not form and cannot serve as a sulfur-retaining agent. In several tests the anthracite was mixed with 6 or 10 percent dolomite prior to firing in the chain-grate stoker. The dolomite did not improve sulfur retention owing to the high temperature in the fuel bed. Sulfur retention was, however, related to the unburned carbon in the ash. The relationship of the percentage of original coal sulfur retained in the ash (Y) to the percentage of the original carbon in the coal remaining in the ash (X) is expressed by Y = -0.579 + 0.914X. The percentage of sulfur retained is almost directly proportionate to the percentage of original coal carbon in the ash.

To improve the reliability of the Bureau developed bore-hole gage now widely used to determine the absolute state of stress in rock. Approach Use the knowledge gained by extensive field tests to design a more rugged and reliable Instrument using lighter and stronger materials. How It Works The original gage consisted of a stainless steel cylinder 1-3/8 Inches In diameter and 10-1/2 inches long. The new gage is made from titanium. This lighter material reduces the weight of the gage by 43 percent, which enhances the gage placement and depth of overcoring in vertical up? holes. For added strength, the titanium case and placement end are now threaded to the gage body instead of using screw fasteners. Three pairs of strain gaged transducers are positioned to measure the diametral deformation of a 1-1/2 diameter borehole at 60-degree intervals around the Inner surface of the borehole. Each transducer consists of a beryllium copper cantilever with a strain gage cemented on each side. These transducers are secured Into the gage body by a tapered shank for minimal creep. The transducers opposite each other are wired together to form a 4-arm external bridge circuit. A pair of transducers is referred to as a component. Any deformation of the borehole, which occurs during overcoring, is detected by pistons which translate the motion to the components. Each

"INTRODUCTION AND CONCLUSIONSThe first three reports of investigations 5/ in this series, pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit dealt with the dust produced by blasting, the effect of stemming on gases generated by blasting, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60-percent ammonia gelatin dynamite.This report covers an investigation of the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite, such as a missed hole.The practice of drilling a new hole a foot from a missed hole to blast out the missed hole should be prohibited. It is dangerous, as is evidenced by the number of miners killed through drilling into missed holes. It is even more hazardous in a mine on a multiple-shift basis, in which the same miners do not drill succeeding rounds."

A stirred reactor (SR) combustion system has been developed to gather information on the mechanisms of ignition and flame propagation of coal dust under conditions similar to those found in coal dust explosion flames. The prime scaling variable considered in this study is that of rapid particle heating (between 105 and 106°K/sec) which is accomplished by means of turbulent mixing during combustion. The SR combustors tested in this study have consisted basically of spheres hollowed in the centers of refractory housings. Coal and air mixtures have been injected into the spherical combustion chambers through a single jet, two opposed jets or four opposed jets. The diameters of the jets have ranged from 0.63 to 0.22 cm. The volumes of the combustion chambers have ranged from 1.0 to 0.2 liters. The reactors have been equipped with thermocouples embedded in the combustion chamber wall as well as a thermocouple located in the exhaust gas stream. In the latter versions of the SR, provisions were made for both solid sampling and gas sampling of the reactant stream exiting from the combustion chamber. Experiments have been carried out using pulverized bituminous coal. The coal has been reacted in an SR in mixtures of air and air/nitrogen. These experiments have provided information on the mode of ignition of the coal as well as yielding information on the kinetics of coal pyrolysis through the use of SR theory. Ash tests performed on the reacted samples collected from the SR indicated that the majority of the values of weight loss percentage were between 60 and 70 percent. The percentages of weight loss were relatively unaffected by changes in temperature which varied between 1100 and 1700°K and by changes in residence time which varied between 10 and 20 millisec. Volatile matter tests performed on the samples indicated that the volatile matter left in the char ranged from 3 to 20 percent of the original content. By assuming that all the mass loss was due solely to pyrolysis with no combustion occurring at the particle surface, Q-factors for each test have been calculated. The results of these calculations indicate an average value of Q equal to 1.88. This finding shows that the majority of mass loss can be attributed to pyrolysis. The fact that the extent of reaction varies only slightly over the range of test conditions has been examined in the context of the two component hypothesis of coal constitution. This approach leads to the conclusion that the reaction of the "easily evolved" component VMI is extremely rapid and that the majority of it is removed from the coal in times less than the residence time in the system. This means that the volatile residue remaining in the char can be considered to consist of component II, VMII. If the mass fraction of VMI = 0, then an activation energy of 18.0 kcal is obtained for the pyrolysis reaction. If the mass fraction is assumed to be 0.75, the activation energy increases to 31.2 kcal.

Purchasing a new set of longwall shields requires a substantial investment. A poor shield design can lead to economic hardships, safety concerns for the mine workers, and closure of the mine. This paper addresses several key points that should be considered in the procurement process: (1) understanding your goals and the logic in selecting a higher capacity shield, (2) the importance of completing performance testing before production shield fabrication begins, (3) making sure performance testing is properly done, (4) measuring load(stress) development during performance testing, (5) testing a shield to failure, and (6) the value of buying extra shields. In addition, several challenges are proposed for consideration in future shield designs. These include (1) 100,000 life-cycle expectancy, (2) improved hydraulic diagnostic capability, (3) smart load control by optimizing setting pressures, (4) lubricated link joint design concepts, (5) composite material applications to reduce shield weight, (6) incorporating periodic weighting predictive algorithms into the data-processing software, (7) advanced component load measurement on two to three specially instrumented shields to detect loading in the structural components, and (8) constant set leg cylinder design.
