New Continuous Personal Dust Monitors (CPDM) submitted to NIOSH for approval to sample coal mine dust must accurately measure respirable coal mine dust in mine environments. There are two steps in the process which may be done in any order. The manufacturer is required to submit the results of a comparative underground coal mine dust sampling study, where the candidate CPDM is compared to an approved coal mine dust sampling device (currently the Coal Mine Dust Personal Sampling Unit (CMDPSU)). This testing shall follow the guidelines outlined below and shall demonstrate through weighted regression analysis that the mean coefficient of variation with bias correction is equal to or less than 12.8%. The other step involves laboratory testing to determine the electronic and environmental stability. This testing must be conducted by a private, commercial, academic or other laboratory approved by NIOSH.

Dielectric constants and dissipation factors were measured for six rocks over the 20-to 100-megahertz frequency range by means of the susceptance-variation method. Results for both dry and moist specimens are presented and compared with data reported by others. Loss factors calculated from the data presented are important to the Bureau's study of rock fragmentation by means of dielectric heating.

This paper describing the mining practices at Mine No. 2 of the Marquette Range, Michigan is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various minim; districts of the United States. The publication, of this information should be of interest to the industry at large and the exchange of ideas thereby made possible should be of economic value to operators in all harts of the country. "INTRODUCTION Preliminary reports by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ and by the Federal Geological Survey 4/ suggested that exploration would discover substantial reserves of minable ore in the Contact mine, Grant County, New Mexico. During February and March 1943, a sampling program was conducted on this property under the direction of the author. This was art of a general survey of the manganese districts of southwestern New Mexico.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as practicable soon as after its conclusion. The Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocer, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. S. Dean, assistant director. With respect to this report, special acknowledgment is due to C. H. Johnson, district engineer for New Mexico, and E. D. A working understanding of present coal mine communications equipment and its usage is an essential prerequisite to the determination of future communications systems needs. As a means of gaining this understanding, a field survey program was planned and implemented. The plan formulated called for obtaining both qualitative and quantitative data from three main areas of interest: the types, physical condition, and performance characteristics of equipment presently used in the sample of mines to be visited; the relationship present communications has to safety and productivity; and the practical, future communications needs as de- rived through interviews with present mine management. In compliance with the original plan, the type and physical condition of equipment in use was found through at-mine interviews of personnel responsible for installation and maintenance. Further evaluation was made through the review of equipment instruction books and maintenance manuals and through in-mine inspection of communications equipment and signal distribution networks. The performance characteristics were determined through listening to conversations and noise levels and by talk-testing from randomly selected stations throughout each mine. System operation was evaluated by asking communication system users their opinions and by noting any difficulties personnel had using the systems. Plans in the second area of interest--that of relating communications to mining operations-- were to observe mining operations and usage of communications; to gain insight through interviews with mine management, from mine superintendents to section foreman; and to look for correlation between communications, production, and safety. Lastly the communication systems needs and requirements were determined from first hand interviews of mine personnel, from the analysis that lead to the individual reports on the eight mines, and from an overview of all of the mines studied. The latter was done to find commonality between the needs of the individual mines such that system requirements having the greatest universal value could be derived, thus lowering per-mine cost of equipment through economics of scale. Armed with tape recorders, backgrounds in communications technology, and with an interview questionnaire that was improved as experience was gained, engineers visited the eight mines to obtain the raw data from which the needs and requirements could be developed through analysis. During the first part of the program two days were spent at each mine so that interviews and tours could be completed, and so that full eight hour shift phone usage recordings could be obtained for statistical analysis. One day visits were sufficient for those trips where tape recordings were not made. During the later trips less attention was given to the statistical nature of communications, and more to how communications relates to the total mining operation.

Reference mass spectra and analytical correlations for 20 alkylcycloalkyl sulfides and two dicycloalkyl sulfides are presented 'to provide information that will facilitate the identification of sulfur compounds occurring in natural or synthetic mixtures. Reference spectra indicate relative intensities in addition to parent and base peak sensitivities. Analytical correlations establish the ionic species that reflect major fragmentation paths for the com-pounds studied. Specifically, the correlations show that base peaks are formed by several different processes: (1) Cleavage of the bond a to the ring, (2) fragmentation of the alkyl chain, and (3) fragmentation of the ring plus fragment contribution from the alkyl chain. Useful correlations for deter-mining alkyl chain length involve the CnH2+3S+ and CnH2n+1 + ions. CnH2n-2+ and CnH2n-1 S+ ions reveal the number of carbon atoms in the cyclic ring. Other important ionic species are also discussed.

Mathematical expressions are derived for the histories of the pressure, flame radius, mass fraction burned, and burned and unburned gas temperatures associated with a spherical flame propagating concentrically in a spherical vessel. The equations are solved numerically for a 9.5 pct CH4/air mixture using the best available information for the burning velocity, expansion ratio, and specific heat ratio. Calculated histories are in complete accord with experimental measurements. The accuracy of calculated histories is determined relative to errors in the system parameters, and it is found that 10 pct errors in either the burning velocity or the expansion ratio results in a 40-pct error in the pressure history. A 10-pct error in either burned or unburned specific heat ratio results in a 22-pct error &apos;in the pressure history. It was further established that the usual assumption of constant specific heat ratio is unacceptable, but equating the burned and unburned specific heat ratios result in no apparent error in the histories. The cubic law (P = Kt3 + Po) is derived and discussed, and it is found that the law is valid only during the early period (P<2 atm) of flame growth.

While it is known that vanadate and related compounds of pentavalent vanadium ( V (V)) exert potent toxic effects on a wide variety of biological systems, the underlying biochemical mechanism is still not fully understood ( 1- 3). One of the pathways is thought to involve the oxidation of NAD ( P) H. Thus, considerable effort has been devoted to finding the mechanism of NAD ( P) H oxidation by Vcvi (1-15). Erdmann et al. (5) first noted that vanadate stimulated the oxidation of NADH by plasma membranes and attributed this effect to a membrane containing NAD(P)H-dependent V(V) reductase. Later studies by Liochev and Fridovich indicated that endogenous superoxide ( 02 ) plays a central role in this reaction ( 4, 12, 13) . They proposed that NAD ( P) H dehydrogenases or oxidases produce 02, which causes VCV ) to stimulate NAD ( P) H oxidation via the following free radical chain mechanism ( 4, 12, 13) :

Two methods are presented to determine the mechanical shaft torque as a function of time for an induction motor. The methods are based on the motor equivalent circuit and use as input variables of the motor terminal voltage, line current, input power, and power factor. One method uses all four variables and the other uses only voltage and current. The test data deals specifically with continuous miners, but the theory could be applied to other mining machines driven by multiple induction motors. Results are given for the tramming, maneuvering, cutting, and cutting with loading operations and are in the form of a minimum, a maximum, and an average of the shaft-torque time function. The theoretical development and computer implementation are discussed for both methods.

The occurrence of hydrogen sulfide in the gas in solution in the oil produced from the Tensleep sandstone in the Elk Basin oil field in Wyoming constitutes a serious hazard to persons working in, that field. Aware of the general conditions because of petroleum reservoir studies being conducted in that field by its engineers, the Bureau of Mine&apos;s willingly agreed to a request of the Petroleum Administration for War to publicize the hazard and the measures for overcoming it. In October 1943 and November 1944, the Bureau of Mines investigated the method&apos;s used in handling the oil and in disposing of the hydro¬gen sulfide that occurs with it. This circular reports the results of these observations. HYDROGEN SULFIDE OCCURRENCE IN THE. ELK BASIN OIL FIELD The Elk Basin oil field is in Park County, Wyo., and Carbon County, Mont. It is about 18 miles north of Powell and 12 miles west of Frannie, Wyo. The original Elk Basin oil and gas field was situated in an eroded depression surrounded by an inner rimrock about 200 feet high with a bordering higher plateau about 500 feet above the basin floor.

This paper describing the minim, methods at the mine of the Consolidated Cortez Silver Mines, Cortez, Nevada, is one of a series of similar papers being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The Cortez district is situated on the southwest slope of Mt. Tenabo of the Cortez Range, near the middle of the boundary line between Eureka and Lander Counties (fig. 1). The camp of Cortez is 36 miles south of Beowawe, the nearest station on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads. Mt. Tenabo, which is the highest summit of the south end of the Cortez mange, has an elevation of 9,240 feet; Cortez is about 6,280 feet above sea level. The Consolidated Cortez Silver Mines is the only company operating in the district at the present time and employs about 60 men. The daily production of l25 tons of silver-lead ore is concentrated in the company&apos;s mill of 150 tons capacity. The concentrate is hauled to Beowawe by automobile trucks for shipment to a reduction plant in Salt Lake Valley, Utah.

A geologic study of Mines 32 and 33 in Cambria County, Pa., was conducted as part of a methane control research program. Areas of high methane emission and roof instability are encountered which are related to the structural and stratigraphic features that characterize the geologic setting of these mines. Locally the folds trend N 20° E ±2°, the direction of the butt cleat in the Lower Kittanning coal. The face cleat strikes at N 69° W ±2° and the systematic rock joint in the surface bedrock strikes N 67° W ±2°This suggests that a directional stress oriented N 70° W produced the folds and influenced the directions of coal cleat and systematic joint sets. Analysis of SLAR indicates three directions of prominent regional lineation: N 39° E, N 31° W, and N 70° W. Little gas was encountered during development mining; large volumes of gas are encountered when roof falls. Most of the gas comes from strata above the mined coal; therefore, to control methane, roof instability must be controlled. Roof falls and high rates of methane emission are most likely where less than 30 feet of many thin layers of limestone, shale, and sandstone occurs between the Lower Kittanning coal and the next coal and in zones along the margins of a sandstone channel.

"The tungsten area in southern Mecklenburg County, Virginia, was studied by the Bureau of Mines during the period August 1944 to March 1945. The explorations were an expansion of the work done by the Bureau in 1943 in the tungsten area of Vance County, North Carolina, which joins Mecklenburg County on the south.3/Outcrops of quartz veins in the area were searched for and examined, and the only Promising showing found (a vein on the Gladys N. Taylor tract) was explored by trenching, test pitting, and diamond drilling (fig. 1).Mecklenburg County, Virginia, is in the southeastern part of the State, bordering on North Carolina,U. S. Highways 1, 15, and 58 traverse the County, and State and County roads provide ready access to most parts of the area.In 1942, Joseph and Richard Hamme discovered tungsten-bearing quartz veins in Vance County, Forth Carolina, and started mining and milling the ore. The first concentrates were shipped in July 1943. In August 1943, the Hamme holdings were acquired by Haile Mines, Inc., who continued the mining operations.The Bureau of Mines began exploratory work in North Carolina in June 1943. Reconnaissance work showed that the mineralized belt extends north-ward into Virginia. The Kimball tract, which joins the Taylor property on the north, was explored in 1943 by trenching and drilling by the R. G. Lassiter interests of Raleigh, Y. C., with disappointing results.The topography of the district is mature and characterized by wide, shallow valleys and low, rounded ridges. The main ridges trend northeast. Most of the area ranges from 300 feet to 400 feet above sea level.The relief apparently is controlled by resistant quartz lenses and the associated hard, silicified zones. The enclosing schists and granites are usually deeply weathered. Consequently, most of the quartz veins are found on the ridges."

There?s no denying that mining is a male-dominated industry. Yet thanks to technologies developed over the last 20 years, societal changes in sex role stereotyping, individual determi­nation, and the willingness of companies to train women, there are no jobs in mining today where women are not represented. Women are drillers and electricians as well as drivers of heavy equipment and haulpack trucks. They perform jobs ranging from field exploration and metallurgy to clerical and janitorial and warehousing positions, from prospectors and underground blasters to geologists and land reclamation experts, from communicators to legal experts on mining law and more. The Women?s Mining Coalition, founded in 1994 to shepherd responsible legislative mining reform, estimates that 20 percent of the workers in the mining industry are women. Although women are concentrated in clerical and adminis­trative jobs, at least 10 percent are in non-traditional, hardhat jobs, claims the group. There are women in management, but the numbers in senior management remain small, especially in larger companies.

"In a 1985 seminar, we were told that over-optimism abounds in Artificial Intelligence (AI), that AI is neither a science nor a technology yet, and that we will be both exhilarated and disappointed with AI. In fact, even today, there is no single accepted definition of AI; however, certain features have been identified by AI researchers as essential to consider an entity (e.g. machine or program) to be intelligent. According .to Shank (1987), these features include communication (to be able to communicate with), internal knowledge (knowledge about itself), world knowledge (awareness and knowledge about the world outside), intentionality (knowing what one wants and a plan to seek it, ie. goal seeking behavior), and creativity (being adaptable to changing conditions). None of these figures would individually define intelligence; however, each would be a part of intelligence in its own way.The prospects for the development of entities with AI have never been as good as they are now. The combination of advancements in computer hardware and .software along with new insights into the ways in· which we store knowledge and use it for problem solving has enhanced the potential for the creation ~f intelligent entities. After some unbounded optimism of a major breakthrough in the fifties and frustrating disappointments in the two following decades, it appears now that AI has emerged from research labs to industrial practice. This is confirmed by the growing number of repeat applications of AI in business and industry to the extent that AI can now be considered a technology.AI applications are categorized into several distinct areas such as Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition and Synthesis, Expert Systems, Robotics, Machine Vision, etc. Of these practical realizations, Expert Systems (ES) has the greatest potential for meeting the decision-making needs of the manager in the ever-growing complex scoio-technical systems. Prof. Feigenbaum, an expert and leader on expert systems, has defined Expert System as"" ... an intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems that are difficult enough to require significant human expertise for their solution. Knowledge necessary to perform at such a level, plus the inference procedures used, can be thought of as a model of the expertise of the best practitioners of the field."""

This report deals with information regarding a new Medium Frequency (MF) Wireless Communication System for underground mines. This new telecommunication system works on low loss electromagnetic wave propagation modes which allow it to provide quality radio communications almost anywhere in a mine. Tests show the MF system can provide improved safety and managerial control, increased productivity, better organizational team-work and reduced maintenance cost; furthermore, MF&apos;s unique design allows for easy installation at a minimum cost. This paper covers the following: 1) MF design plan, 2) Overview of mine radio communications systems, 3) Preparations needed for designing an MF system, 4) MF equipment, 5) MF installation, 6) MF design considerations, 7) MF design specifica¬tions, and 8) Recommendations dealing with MF system. Experiments in four mines are illustrated to demonstrate the success and via¬bility of the MF system. The mines range from small (500 tons/day) to large (67,000 tons/day) capacity and represent several different mining methods. The MF Wireless Communication System represents an advancement in mining communication and the groundwork for other advanced mine systems.

Carbon monoxide poisoning, as usually encountered, is an acute condition resulting from breathing atmospheres containing that gas. It is characterized clinically by headache, dizziness, weakness in the legs, increased respiration at first which later becomes irregular and depressed, collapse, unconciousness, and death; anatomically it is characterized by temporary changes in the red blood cells due to the combination of carbon monoxide with hemoglobin, and, in prolonged severe exposures, degenerative changes in various tissues of the body, especially those of the central nervous system. No race or nationality is immune or has a, special tolerance for carbon monoxide. From data at hand, it is known that both sexes are about equally susceptible. All ages are affected, but small percentages seem to have a more deleterious effect upon young animals and this is possibly true of children. Exercise, high temperature and humidity, and low oxygen content of en atmosphere increase the degree of poisoning for a certain concentration of carbon monoxide. Anything that lowers the physical fitness of a man, such as illness, overwork, or excesses of any kind, exaggerates the effects. More cases of poisoning from carbon monoxide occur in coal mines in the cold months of the year, because explosions take place more frequently during that period, also in homes where gas is used for beating purposes, and in garages from accumulation of automobile exhaust gases due to poor ventilation.

The widespread use of toluene in industry and the importance of air analysis in industrial-hygiene surveys have created a need for a simple and accurate method for determining toluene vapor in air. Most of the methods used to determine small quantities of toluene in liquid or vapor form are based on the measurement of its physical properties. Methods based on fractional distillation, determination of specific gravity, use of the interferometer, use of the spectrograph, and sorption on solid sorbents with subsequent determination of gain in weight have been employed. Distillation and specific-gravity methods are not applicable to the small quantities of toluene found in the air, and use of the interferometer, spectrograph, and sorption methods either are not specific for toluene in the presence of other volatile substances or require expensive equipment.

The linear expansion of high-purity oxides of yttrium, cerium, samarium, europium, and dysprosium was determined by the interferometric method for the temperature range 25° to 1,000° C. Single-crystal magnesium oxide and single-crystal aluminum oxide were used as reference materials. The bulk density and crystal form of the nonreference materials also were determined. The coefficients of linear expansion in the range 25° to 1,000° C were found to be 8.10 x 10-6 for yttria, 12.10 x 10-6 for ceria, 10.81 x 10&apos;6 for samaria (monoclinic), 10.35 x 10-6 for europia (monoclinic), and 8.13 x 10-6 for dysprosia, each given in centimeters per centimeter per degree Centigrade. A detailed investigation of the interferometric technique for measuring thermal expansion in this temperature range was made. The interferometer was found to be a precise tool but only when adequate precautions were taken. These precautions are described.
