The Hopper-Feeder-Bolter (HFB) is a prototype multifunctional machine designed to improve productivity by minimizing continuous miner place changes. It is designed primarily to work beside a two-pass continuous miner, bolting on one side and then place changing to bolt the other side while simultaneously providing a surge car and lump breaker located directly behind the continuous miner. Surface testing was conducted at the Bureau of Mines Mine Equipment Test Facility (METF) to evaluate overall system performance and reliability. Tests were conducted to evaluate place changing, tramming, lump breaking, roof bolting, drawbar pull, conveying, temporary roof-support (TRS) capacity, lighting, and noise. Surface test results indicate the HFB is ready to be tested and evaluated underground in a production mode.

U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) research has shown that fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms (GA's) have great potential for industrial process control. A technique has been developed by the USBM in which GA's are used to substantially reduce the time needed to design fuzzy logic controllers (FLC's).This technique shows promise as an efficient, robust approach to developing control systems. The research described in this report is twofold. First, the basic approach to developing an FLC using GA's is presented. The GA-designed FLC is developed for a specific physical system, a pH titration system. Second, empirical results are presented in which variations in the FLC implementation are compared. Specifically, the effects of altering five aspects of the pH FLC are considered: (1) membership function form, (2) number of fuzzy classes, (3) the center-of-area method, (4) implication operator, and (5) fuzzy rule form. Results indicate that (1) the technique in which GA's are used to design FLC's is effective, and (2) when this technique is used, variations in FLC implementation have little effect on FLC performance in a chosen control problem.

This paper, describing the mining method at the Black Butte quicksilver mine, is one of a series of papers being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various districts of the United States. It is presented to show the mining practice and costs in the successful treatment of low-grade quicksilver deposits. The operation discussed is an excellent example of w1-pat can be done in working a limited tonnage of low-grade ore under sound management. The Black Butte mine is situated at Black Butte, Lane County, in the southern part of the State of Oregon, 17-1/2 miles from Cottage Grove -- a station on the Siskiyou branch of the Southern Pacific Co. The Black Butte mining district lies in the foothills of the Calapooia Mountain Range, which connects with the Cascade Range on the east and with the Coast Range on the west. The elevation at '.lie reduction plant is 1,000 feet above sea level. The apex of Black Butte Mountain, or which the mine is situated, has an elevation of 2,700 feet. The district possesses exceptional natural facilities infrequently met with elsewhere for the mining and reduction of cinnabar ores. "Longwall mining is generally recognized as safer, more productive and economic when compared to room and pillar underground coal mining. There has been, however, increasing concern for the control of airborne coal dust concentrations in long wall faces. The airborne dust cloud at a longwall face is a complex aerosol system containing particles of varied size, density, shape and state of aggregation. For the development of more effective dust control practices in longwall faces, it is necessary to understand more clearly the characteristics of the longwall dust cloud.In this paper, results of a research study on dust concentration distributions along longwall faces are presented. The objective of this study is to characterize the longwall dust cloud behaviour and provide necessary fundamental data for a better understanding of the longwall dust problem. MSA personal samplers and gravimetric total dust samplers were employed to collect respirable and total airborne dust samples. The size distribution of these samples was determined by MicroTrac SPA. The instantaneous respirable airborne dust concentrations were recorded using RAM-I. The dust concentrations are related to face operations, particularly the shearer location and activities. The size distribution of airborne dust, instantaneous respirable airborne dust concentration, and air quantity distributions along longw all faces reveal a complex dust flow phenomenon. Additional fundamental studies are needed for characterizing the temporal and spatial behaviour of the dust cloud at longwall faces.IntroductionModern mechanized longwall mining was introduced in the United States in the 1960's and has become more common in the last twenty years. United States longwalls are multiple-entry retreating faces. According to a recent survey, 91 of the 102 longwall faces employ double-drum shearers (1). Several recently installed longwall faces have consistently produced over 4 000 to 5 000 tons per shift over extended periods of operation. The trend in under-ground coal mining in the U.S. certainly is toward the introduction of longwalls. This trend is true not only for new mines but also for renovation of existing mines. While longwall mining has many advantages over other mining methods, including improved safety, such as higher pro-duction. greater productivity and enhanced reserve recov-ery, it is associated with severe problems of dust control. The increase in longwall production has been accompanied by an increase in respirable dust problems which limit realizing the full potential of the longwall mining system. Despite the efforts to develop improved equipment and operational procedures to control the dust levels at longwall faces, it is still difficult to bring several double-drum shearer operations into compliance with the Federal stand¬ards of 2,0 mg/m 3 respirable dust without loss of produc¬tion. In fiscal year 1987, fifty-eight of the longwall sections were found to be in non-compliance once, and an additional 31 were cited two or more times'''. If the full potential of the longwall mining method is to be realized, new measures must be implemented to control the dust concentration to mandated levels. There is a need for detailed and extensive sampling of longwall faces to understand the dust source-sink relationships and the transient ambient concentrations. These must be related to the mining activities on the face. This paper is to characterize the longwall dust cloud behavior through a series of experiments in operating faces and provide necessary fundamental data for further studies to develop improved dust control practices."

As part of a Bureau of Mines survey of radioactive waste disposal , a laboratory investigation was made to study such problems in carbonate leaching mills . Because uranium concentrators employing carbonate leaching with caustic precipitation normally recycle barren solutions to the washing circuit , the disposal of liquid radioactive wastes is automatically controlled . However , it was deemed important to determine the actual radium 226 concentrations occurring in this type of milling so that the survey of the entire industry would be complete . The laboratory procedure consisted of leaching the ground ore at 85 ° to 90 ° C and 50 pct solids for 6 hours in a sodium carbonate - sodium bicarbonate solution . The pulp was filtered to obtain a pregnant solution that was reacted with sodium hydroxide to precipitate the uranium as sodium diuranate . Regeneration of the barren solution was accomplished by gassing with carbon dioxide . The solution then was reused by advancing the solution through the washing to the leaching operations . The radioactivity in the pregnant solution was unusually high , averaging 6,500 disintegrations per minute ( dpm ) of radium 226 per liter . However , over 95 pct of the radium was precipitated with the uranium . Consequently , no buildup of radium occurred upon reuse of the barren solutions for washing .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) Information and Analysis Directorate collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U. S. economy. The USBM's data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 329), which placed the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the USBM survey activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress). This act strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral-material production or consumption.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report evaluates the load supporting characteristics of grout columns used as point supports for mine subsidence abatement. The cone-shaped columns were constructed with sodium silicate and cementitious grout in both wet and dry environments. The scope of work included the testing of seven full-scale grout columns in the USBM's Mine Roof Simulator from which the load-deformation and failure characteristics were determined. The performances of grout columns are analyzed with respect to (1) the amount of roof contact established during column construction, (2) shape effects produced by the truncated cone geometry, (3) size effects in reference to grout strength and full-scale column capacity, (4) the effect of wet environments on grout strength, (5) the effect of the sodium silicate on the grout strength and full-scale column behavior, and (6) the stiffness of the grout column. Limited tests were also conducted on cylindrical columns constructed in fabric bags. Recommendations for point support construction using sodium silicate technology and the need for additional research to develop improved containment devices for column construction are addressed in the report.

The Bureau of Mines recently investigated dust generation and methane liberation during half-and full-web cutting at a double-drum shearer longwall face. This study was conducted to ascertain the health and safety aspects of wider web shearing at longwalls. Results from these underground tests showed that deeper web cutting reduced dust generation and methane liberation per ton of coal mined, while significantly improving shearer production rates. When cutting with the airflow (head-to-tail cut pass) full-web cutting decreased dust generation per ton by 16 pct at the shearer and 6 pct at the tailgate, with an increase in shearer production rate of 72 pct. Methane liberation per short ton also deere~sed by 36 pet at the shearer and 22 pct at the tailgate. Full-web cutting against the airflow (tail-to-head cut pass) decreased dust generation per ton by 41 pct at the shearer and 37 pct at the tail-gate over half-web cutting, with an increase in shearer production rate of 61 pct. Methane liberation per ton also decreased by 35 pct at the shearer and 41 pct at the tailgate. These improvements for full-web cutting are a reflection of improved cutting efficiency (less dust and methane produced from cutting) and less new face area exposed per ton of coal mined (less methane liberated from face per short ton of coal mined).

The source and petrographic analysis of each sample are given. Included are values for isomorphous series of minerals showing wide ranges of composition and for a few high-purity synthetic minerals.

Hydrocarbon gases, primarily methane but also the Ca through Cs paraffins, the Ca and C3 olefins and possibly the C4 and Cs olefins, are byproducts of coal formation. Although it is generally believed that coal formation occurred at temperatures below 200° C, most experimental work on gas formation from coal has been performed at temperatures between 200° and 1,000°C. The objective of this Bureau of Mines experiment was to determine if observable changes in the gases from coal could be produced at temperatures below 200° C in relatively short periods of time. The experiment involved heating coal samples from six coalbeds at constant temperatures and analyzing evolved gases. The composition of the gases at three temperatures was compared. At 35° C, over 99 pet of the gas is methane; at 125° and 150°, methane constitutes approximately half of the hydrocarbon gas. Isobutane and pentane are the predominant higher hydrocarbons at temperatures between 100° and 150° C.

Solid and liquid impurities must be removed almost completely from synthesis gas for the production of synthetic liquid fuels because of their effect on the synthesis catalyst and turbocompressors. The maximum permissible concentration of dust has been set at 0.05 grain per 100 cubic feet.5/ This is one part per million by weight, or about the same concentration as in average city air. The cost of synthesis gas is estimated to constitute 60 to 70 percent of the total cost of the synthetic liquid fuel. For this reason this station is developing processes using coal instead of the more valuable coke as raw material, which promises reduction in cost of the synthesis gas. This, however, increases the difficulty of attaining the above dust value. As failure of the dust-removing equipment to produce high-purity gas may ruin valuable equipment within a few minutes, it is imperative that a reliable and continuous method be obtained for determining such extremely low concentrations .of dust in the purified gas. A suitable device must also instantly sound an alarm and, if necessary, automatically actuate the proper valves to prevent damage. The Ess Instrument Co. designed and built an instrument which they believed might fulfill these specifications. It' continually compared, by means of photoelectric cells, the intensity of a light beam passing through the gas and a similar beam passing through clean air. For maximum sensitivity, the photocells were connected back to back, i.e., anode to cathode and cathode to anode. The difference in voltage produced by the two cells was amplified and operated an indicator.

This Bureau of Mines report presents results from experimental studies on wood fires in a laboratory-scale tunnel network. Experimental measurements include ignition delay time, flame spread rate, ventilation air and gas flow rates, wood temperature, gas temperature, pressure and composition, thermal flux, and smoke particulates. These measurements form a data base for fire-scaling studies and provide information on various fire processes, such as flow interaction between ventilation air and fire, fire throttling and reverse flow, and duct fire energetics. Results show how hazards of duct fires relate to the development of (1) asphyxiating and toxic fumes, (2) explosive gas mixtures, (3) throttling of ventilation air, and (4) high-temperature combustion products. Such fire hazards should be carefully considered when testing flammabilities of materials used in a confined underground mine environment.

Tests of mine-roof models in a centrifuge show that the suspension effect due to bolting a horizontally bedded mine roof with frictionless surfaces of contact between beds depends principally on the number of bolted beds and their relative flexural rigidities, provided that sufficient bolt tension is exerted to prevent strata separations at the bolt locations. Strata separations tend to occur in the unbolted roof mainly because the beds have unequal thicknesses. "Suspension effect" refers to the transfer of part of the weight of weaker or thinner beds to the flexurally more rigid beds by roof bolts or by any other means. The factors investigated were number of beds in the bolted unit, bed thickness, modulus of elasticity of beds, length of bolts, spacing of bolts across and along the opening, bolt load, and intensity of roof load. The general principles of behavior of the bolted roof beds are explained by an approximate theory. Model test data are used to validate the theory and to obtain an expression for the "suspension efficiency". As the suspension effect actually observed in the models is smaller than that predicted by the approximate theory, the suspension efficiency in general is less than unity. Mathematical expressions are obtained for (1) the change in roof bending stress due to the suspension effect, which is needed for design of a roof-bolting system, (2) the change of roof deflection due to the suspension effect, which may be useful for evaluating the effectiveness of a roof-bolting system, and (3) the bolt load or pre-load that is required to achieve the desired reinforcing effect.

The Bureau of Mines investigated gases from flash and laser irradiation of Pittsburgh seam (hvab) coal to determine the action of high temperatures on coal. Temperatures in excess of l,000° C were reached with both types of irradiation. Craters about 300 microns in diameter were produced in the coal with millisecond pulses from the laser unit rated at 1.7 joules' output. Gaseous products from laser and flash irradiations in vacuum contained 21 and 8 percent acetylene, respectively. Diacetylene, vinylacetylene, and other products to molecular weight 130 were indicated in the mass spectrum of the gas from the laser study. Single experiments were also conducted in which the laser energy, particle size of the coal, and atmosphere were varied. The results indicated that the distributions of products obtained from the flash and laser irradiations of coal were different from that produced in high-temperature carbonization.

The work of the United States Bureau of Mines on stream pollution by coal-mine drainage has included a study of seasonal variations in acidity and volume of several streams in Pennsylvania. The acidity of these streams has been determined during the two or three years prior to 1930 and the results may be considered to represent "normal" low water conditions. The summer of 1330, however, was unusually dry and represents what may be termed "extreme low water conditions on these streams. This report is a comparison of the results obtained for extreme low water of 1930 and for other years. The streams investigated were Buffalo Creek in Somerset County, Indian Creek (lower 5 miles) in Westmoreland County, Little Toby Creek in Elk and Jefferson Counties, Daguscohonda Run in Elk County and West Creek in Elk and Cameron Counties. These will be treated separately in the order given. Most of the descriptive matter and physical data pertinent to the streams and drainage basins are taken from published reports of the Pennsylvania State Water Supply Commission, 1917.

The reaction of coal, oil, or natural gas with air and oxygen and/or steam yields a gas containing varying amounts of impurities. Depending on the raw material and the end use of the product, these impurities include solids, such as dust or slag, and gases, such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Considerable effort has been expended in developing and operating purification systems, and the literature is replete with equipment data and operating results. The research problems, the design, and the operation of the various systems have been the subjects of patent applications, journal articles, and textbooks.

Standard tellurium analytical procedures were modified to obtain the greater sensitivity needed to support a survey of tellurium resources by the Bureau of Mines. Resulting volumetric and spectrophotometric methods for determining tellurium in all types of tellurium-containing materials are described. Sample decomposition and preliminary separations of interfering selenium, gold, and silver are the same in both procedures. The volumetric method is applicable to samples containing a minimum of 10 parts per million of tellurium, In this method the tellurium is reduced to elemental form, and the colloidal suspension is titrated with 0.01 normal iodine solution. The weight of sample for analysis, from 0.25 to 10 grams, should be selected so that the sample contains 0.1 to 5 milligrams of tellurium. To insure accuracy, duplicate samples should be run and the results averaged, particularly on samples of low tellurium content: The limit of determination is 0,001 percent tellurium, which is equivalent to 0.1 milligram of tellurium when using a 10-gram sample. The spectrophotometric method is particularly applicable to low-tenor materials containing from 0.5 to 50 parts per million of tellurium. Up to 10 gram samples are required for making accurate determinations in the low-concentration range. The sample used should contain between 5 and 100 micrograms of tellurium. The turbidity of a colloidal suspension of tellurium prepared from such a sample is determined in a spectrophotometer .t at a. wave-length of 440 millimicrons, and this value is compared with those of standard samples containing known amounts of tellurium.

In contrast to the large fund of information available on the carbonizing properties of Eastern U.S. coals, the experimental data available for most Western U.S. and foreign coals are meager. To supply some self-consistent data, the Bureau of Mines conducted 220 low-temperature carbonization assay tests at 500° C. in a laboratory-scale carbonization apparatus. The results are included in this report. The U.S. coals tested are from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. Assays were also made on coals from Canada, Ecuador, France, Greece, India, Mexico, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Yugoslavia. In addition, one assay of pine sawdust and one assay of a peat from Ireland are reported. Prediction equations were developed relating the yield of products of carbonization obtained at 500° C. in the assay unit to the proximate and ultimate analyses of the coals. The equations for predicting the yields of tar plus light oil, char, and gas, and the heating value of the gas, are considered good, each equation having a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.90 or higher. The equation predicting volume of gas obtained upon carbonization is considered as fair, with a multiple correlation coefficient of 0.84. A reproducibility study of the assay made on 10 replicate samples of a subbituminous coal indicated that the standard deviation of the individual products was 0.31 percent or less.

Because several new and unusual synthetic minerals were found in the system MgO-MgF₂ - SiO2 with Li * , or Nat a similar system with Geo₂ replacing Sio , plus Lit was investigated . In addition to the expected compounds of germanium , Ge - fluor - hectorite and a Ge - fluor- chrysotile were synthesized . Protoamphibole was not observed . Data are given for 69 compositions prepared in the system MgO- MgF₂ - Ge02 at 6.94 percent LiF .
