The purpose of this investigation was to prepare a market survey of the refractories industry in California and Nevada (referred to in subsequent paragraphs as the region), and to determine the degree of self-sufficiency and the potential capacity for anticipated growth. The report includes estimates of the total annual refractories consumption, the quantity of refractories imported into the region, the tonnage of raw materials required for their manufacture, and the resources of fire clay and high-alumina minerals in the region.

"The most authoritative compilations on the coal resources of the British Isles are given in ""The Coal Resources of the World"" issued by the 12th International Geological Congress, 1913. The reserve, calculated to a depth of 6,000 feet, in seams containing not less than two feet of merchantable coal are as follows: Mining at present is conducted at depths from about 800 to 3500 feet. The shallower coals have largely been exhausted. The present average hoisting depth probably is about 1500 feet.The thickness of individual beds at present mined varies from about 2-1/2 feet up to 40 feet in thickness, the latter thickness being found in North Staffordshire. The coal is rarely found level, but is approximately level in some parts of Yorkshire. Anthracite is mined in limited quantities in Wales, and Wales also produces a very high grade semi-anthracite or smokeless coal, which is fa famous the world round, and is equaled only by the Pocahontas and New River coals in the United States:As concerns the methods of mining, these vary widely according to the pitch of the bed, the thickness of coal, and natural conditions, but the prevailing method is some form of longwall or semi-longwall, by which all the coal is extracted. The other principal method is a so-called pillar and, stall method, by which the coal is mined out, leaving square or rectangular pillars which are extracted on the retreat, making it virtually, a retreating longwall system. This method is applied where the roof is strong, and particularly in the thicker beds, as the longwall method is not so well adapted for mining where the thickness exceeds five or six feet, unless it is what is called a multiple seam, one in which there are partings of rock that provide material for building walls, which the roof in subsiding gradually squeezes down."

In the movement of self-controlled direct-current machinery, particularly shortwall cutting, machines, from one place to another in coal mires, "nipping" or it stinging" has been practiced quite commonly. These terms refer to the method of obtaining current for propelling or tramming the machines along trolley haulageways by sliding the trolley trip (hook or nip), which terminates one conductor of the trailing cable, along the trolley wire. This is usually done by the machine operator or runner while sitting on the machine truck and holding the nip terminal against the trolley wire as the machine travels along the rails. This procedure is objectionable for several reasons. Under the best conditions, the area of contact between the nip and trolley wire is snail end, consequently, sparking and flashing ore most likely to be continuous as the machine proceeds. This is undesirable, not only because of the detrimental effect of electric flashes upon eyesight, but because of the pitting and roughening the trolley wheels which decrease the efficiency of current collection by locomotive trolley wheels and shoes and at the same time shorten their useful life by increased wear.

This investigation was undertaken to identify nitrogen , oxygen , and sulfur compounds (polar components ) found in catalytically cracked distillate fuel . It is significant that these compounds concentrate in the sediments and gum that form when the fuel is stored . The polar components were divided in three portions by elution from a chromatographic column filled with alumina . After the hydrocarbons were washed through the column with pentane , a benzene eluted extract was removed followed by an ether eluted extract and then an alcohol desorbed fraction . These extracts were individually distilled in a molecular still and the fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography , mass spectrometry , infrared spectrometry , and elemental and functional analyses . Naphthalene and its homologs , phenanthrene and its homologs , and other compounds such as methyl indene , C₂ quinolines , phenyl indan , and the benzothiophenes , appear in the benzene extracts . Quinolines are the major components of the lower boiling fraction of the ether extract , although carbazoles , acridans , and indoles are present in some concentration . Elemental and functional group analyses of the alcohol fraction indicated 10 percent of the distillate portion was nonhydrocarbon , and in this portion the average molecule contained more than one nonhydrocarbon element . Compounds of such complexity are not well known , and standards for positive identification are limited .

This paper, one of a series prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines discussing the methods used in mining, crushing, and grinding materials for cement manufacture, deals particularly with the methods used at the Security plant of the North American Cement Corporation. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of, total production costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scone of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

This report, the 22d in a series, gives analytical data showing composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1972. This coverage lists mines located in 20 States. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. The deliveries were sampled in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines, and the samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

An accurate assessment of the vertical stress on a coal seam at depth is important for mine design. Vertical stress calculation techniques presently available either are not sufficiently accurate or cannot handle complex surface topography. Therefore, the U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a computerized method to calculate vertical stress exerted on surfaces at depth that includes the effect of topography. Two input data sets are required: a digital elevation model containing topographic elevations and a coal seam file defining coal seam elevations at depth. Boussinesq's equation then quantifies the vertical stress resulting from topography. The computerized method was tested on a coal seam overlain by a complex topography where a vertical stress map encompassing several square miles was produced. Results show that depth mitigates the affects of surface topography, while the coal seam topography has a direct effect on the vertical stress. In comparison to the computerized method, the direct stress method overestimates stress under hills and underestimates stress under valleys. The largest difference between the two methods occurs under the steepest topographic relief. A limitation of the computerized method is that stresses cannot be accurately determined near an outcrop.

USBM Contract H0133045 consists of the design, build and test of 50 waveform generators. The waveform generator is a small ULF transmitter operating in the 1 to 3 KHz frequency range for the purpose of locating trapped miners during a mine disaster. This contract provided for the design, test, and building of 50 waveform generators using a discrete component construction with an option of using hybrid construction techniques within 105 days after the effective date of the contract. Because of large quantity economic considerations, this option was not initiated. Two engineering models were designed, constructed and tested and 50 final production units were fabricated using discrete construction. Complete documentation is supplied under a separate package which includes final schematics, parts list, layout information, equipment specification, production test procedures and qualification test procedures. Ten units have been delivered to the USBM. The remaining 40 units are being retained for packaging under contract H0242010 Transmitter Package and Receivers. A great deal of experience has been gained as a result of this contract. A final discrete potted printed circuit configuration has been arrived at that is now ready for field testing. After field testing, any desired changes should be incorporated into a final design. However, as a result of the current experience gained building and testing the production units, this printed circuit package together with potting procedure could be improved to reduce future costs. For example, the printed circuit board could be increased in size by 0.125 to 0.2 inches and all components could be mounted directly to the board eliminating costly hand stacking of components. The year 1991 recorded unprecedented change throughout the world; war in the Middle East, economic recession in key industrial nations, upheaval in Eastern Europe, and the disintegration of the former U.S.S.R. These issues and growing environmental concerns will affect the entire world mining industry. Environmental issues continue to have an ever greater effect on industrial minerals. In the United States, major issues involving the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and the recent Stormwater Rule by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) affect many types of mineral operations. Significant developments include an important decision in 1991 by a Federal Appellate Court to overturn EPA's asbestos ban on certain products, partly on environmental grounds, and proposed legislation that would overhaul or abandon the 1872 Mining Act. On a global scale, prominent issues include environmental concerns over mining in the Antarctic and Arctic regions and a cutback in plans to clean up the Kola Peninsula in the Commonwealth of Independent States (C.I.S.).

Thorium and yttrium oxides were recovered from siliceous ores of the Powderhorn , Colo . , area . Processing comprised ( 1 ) acid curing and subsequent ( 2 ) acid baking , ( 3 ) leaching , and ( 4) solvent extraction of thorium , using a primary alkylamine , and yttrium , using di - 2 - ethylhexyl phosphoric acid . About 95 pct of the contained thorium and yttrium was recovered from ore containing 1.2 pct Th02 and 0.5 pct Y₂ 03. The thoria product was 99 pct Tho ; the yttria product was 77 pct Y₂ 03. A 150 - to - 1 concentration ratio was effected on the latter , but some contaminating lanthanon - group oxides remained .

This report describes open, sublevel, and shrinkage stoping at the Greenwood mine, operated by Inland Steel-Co. The iron ore mine is in Marquette County, Mich., about 6 miles southwest of Ishpeming (fig. 1). The Greenwood is one of three active underground hard-ore mines on the Marquette range, the others being the Cliffs-Shaft and the Champion mines. The operation reflects an achievement in exploiting small, difficult-to-mine hard-ore bodies lying beneath a 200-foot overburden of glacial drift, which is partly water bearing. This report can indicate only briefly the efforts of personnel in overcoming adverse conditions in mining more than 2 million tons of ore, 80 percent of which was in lump form, for open-hearth production of steel. Significant data presented include descriptions of the principal mining methods employed, sublevel and shrinkage stoping; percent aged mining costs for the entire year 1957, covering both direct mining costs and general expenses; and performance records in units of labor, power, and supplies.

"INRODUCTIONSedimentary deposits of titaniferrous magnetite occur at various localities in the eastern foothills of the Teton Ranse in Deer Lodge County, Mont. The Choteau deposit was examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer in August 1942. An exploration project was recommended.Core drilling exploration was begun in June 1945; it was concluded in August 1945, Seventy-six holes were drilled. This report presents the data obtained by the Bureau of Mines exploration.ACKNOWLEDGMENTIn its program of exploration of mineral, deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective, the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contri¬bution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Leaching of a Georgia umber ore when using both ferrous sulfate and pickle liquor was studied in the laboratory . The ferrous sulfate content of the leach solution was the major factor affecting the extraction of manganese from the ore . Time , temperature , and the sulfuric acid content of the leach solutions had relatively little effect on leaching of manganese from the ore ; however , these factors did affect the amount of iron extracted from the umber and/or precipitated from solution . Simulated countercurrent leaching of the ore with pickle liquor containing 130 gpl (grams per liter ) ferrous sulfate ( 48 gpl ferrous iron ) produced a pregnant solution having 16 gpl manganese and 41 gpl iron . Filtration tests of the leach slurries indicated that separating the leach solution and solids by vacuum filtration was impractical , whereas pressure filtration was feasible when the cake thickness was limited to about three- fourths of an inch . Fired pellets of the filter cake yielded a firm , hard product analyzing 56 percent iron and less than 0.1 percent sulfur .

This paper describing the methods of recovery and treatment of a sand and gravel deposit and the preparation of these materials for a number of special markets is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. It is of particular interest to those sand and gravel operators who have a surplus of fine sand which must be sent to waste, both from the point of view of, equipment and the variety. of markets supplied, and in that it describes one of the few sand and gravel plants which have resorted to hydraulic classification for sizing fine sand. A construction material based on plasticized sulfur and mineral aggregate, that is superior in corrosion resistance and strength to portland cement concrete. The material can be used in the chemical, metallurgical, and fertilizer industries, and will also provide an attractive market for by-product sulfur resulting from compliance with pollution regulations. How It Is Made Sulfur concrete is thermoplastic material. Plasticized sulfur is mixed with sand and gravel aggregate heated to 375-400° F. The sulfur melts and acts as the binder or cement. The sulfur concrete is poured hot and sets at a temperature of 200° F. Full strength is attained in a few hours, compared to several days for portland cement concretes. Sulfur concrete even pours and sets in freezing weather. Although unmodified sulfur with aggregate will produce a sulfur concrete with good initial properties, it undergoes crystallographic modifications, and deteriorates with time, particularly when exposed to moisture or freeze-thaw conditions. The Bureau of Mines has developed plasticizers which, when reacted with the sulfur, give sulfur concretes with excellent moisture and freeze-thaw resistance. The plasticizers are based on mixtures of dicyclopentadlene (DCPD) and ollgomers of cyclopentadiene. About 5 percent by weight of the plasticizers is reacted with molten sui fur for several hours. The sulfur cement can be used directly or allowed to solidify for easier handling and storage.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests.

The measurement of various gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a particular location has become a problem of considerable importance. Levels that need to be monitored vary from the range of percent for constituents such as oxygen to parts per million levels for gases like nitrogen dioxide. In particular, mine air can become contaminated with noxious or toxic gases from several sources: fires within the mine, diesel-powered equipment, and explosive sources. The contaminants that result are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxides of nitrogen (NO and NO2). Additionally, oxygen (O2) may be depleted. Thus, the workman can be exposed to potentially toxic or asphyxiating atmospheres. A device was needed that will continuously monitor the mine air in working areas and provide warning of hazardous atmospheres. The Mine Air Monitor was conceived as being a portable, rugged instrument capable of measuring the concentration of the various atmospheric constituents in the mine environment. The unit was to provide both warning signals and quantitative measurements when hazardous contaminants existed at too high a level, or when the oxygen was being depleted. The initial concept involved optical sensors for all of the contaminating gases to be measured, namely CO, CO2, CH4, and NO2, and an electrochemical cell to monitor O2. When the explosion proof requirements of Schedule 2-G made the concept appear to be unfeasible from the standpoint of weight and portability, the program was redirected and a three channel monitor employing electrochemical sensors was adopted. In this case the gases to be monitored were O2, CO and NO2. The remainder of the program was oriented towards obtaining good, commercially available lectrochemical sensors for the above gases, testing them, reducing deficiencies noted during these tests, and making the necessary modifications to integrate the three sensors into a Mine Air Monitor suitable for the mine environment.

A high-Btu gas was made at the Bruceton, Pa., laboratories of the Bureau of Mines to demonstrate the feasibility of using the gas as a nonpolluting fuel for automobiles. The pilot plants at Bruceton were revised to combine the processes of coal gasification, gas purification, and catalytic methanation in one overall system. Tests in the Bureau's test automobiles at Bartlesville, Okla., showed the Synthane gas was less polluting than natural gas.

The Bureau of Mines recorded particle accelerations in the mine roof produced by three types of explosives in the Pilot Knob Pellet Co. mine, Pilot Knob, Mo. Examined were the effectiveness of cube root, square root, and two-thirds power scaling in grouping the underground blast vibration data, and the effects of mine geometry, rock type, explosive type, and charge size on blast vibration levels. A propagation law for this mine was determined. The scaling factor of the square root of the charge weight was developed from previous Bureau studies of vibrations from quarry blasts, and in under-ground blasting both square root and cube root scaling were found applicable for scaling particle vibration data. The vibrations from the Pilot Knob blasts were best grouped by a square-root scaling factor. The empirical propagation equation AW1/2 = 76,250 (R/W1/2)-2.61 where A is the peak acceleration in g's, W is the charge weight in pounds, and R is the distance from the blast in feet, may be used to describe vibration amplitudes from charges fired with zero delay caps or with a single cap at Pilot Knob. Statistically significant differences were found in the vibration levels generated by the different explosives. The Power Primer (75-percent weight-strength ammonia gelatin dynamite) produced levels of vibration of 1.7 to 2.4 times those of AN-FO and slurry explosives; the latter two are approximately equal.
