This Information Circular describes the development of block-caving methods and practices by the Miami Copper Co. at the Miami mine in Gila County, Arizona. It is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. This report gives a history of the district and outlines early prospecting and exploration including methods of sampling and estimation of ore tonnage and value at the Miami mine. Early mining methods are described, particularly those that influenced developments in the caving method. Mine exploration, development, and operating methods for block caving are described with particular attention to those factors, physical, economic, engineering, and managerial that have improved efficiency in the mining operations over a long productive period. Extraction, ventilation, wage system, safety, water supply, power plant, and shop facilities are discussed. The last section gives a brief summary of such costs as are available for publication.

The Cebolla Creek titaniferous iron deposits near Powderhorn in southern Gunnison County, Colo., were examined by the Federal Bureau of Mines as part of an overall program to investigate the Nation's titanium and iron resources. The deposits occur around the periphery of the Iron Hill stock, which underlies an area of about 12 square miles. Concentrations of magnetite, ilmenite, and perovskite arc localized along fractures in the pyroxenite stock. Mineralogical studies of composite surface samples collected in 1956 showed that most of the iron is present in ilmenite-bearing magnetite. Perovskite is the chief titanium mineral in the magnetite-rich and augite-rich types, and sphene is the principal titanium mineral in the placer material. The mica-rich rock contains approximately equal amounts of perovskite, ilmenite, and sphene.

Measures that were taken to eliminate noise resulting from explosives work at the Bureau of Mines facility at Bruceton , Pa . , are described . A method for monitoring sound transmission characteristics of the atmosphere and control of the explosives testing is presented as a noise control measure that offered partial relief during the period in which the modifications were made . Design details of the replacement gallery , used for permissibility testing of explosives , and the modifications of four types of bombproofs are given . Operation of the closed facilities are completely satisfactory , and the noise problem has been entirely eliminated .

As a part of a Bureau of Mines program on the conversion of coal to liquid and gaseous fuels, the kinetics of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis on iron catalysts was investigated. Nitrided catalysts were studied at 21.4 atmospheres using feed gases ranging from 2H2+1CO to 0.25H2+1CO, and at 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres using 1H2+1CO gas. The overall apparent activation energy increased with increasing carbon monoxide content of the feed gas from 19.5 kcal/mole for 2H2+1CO to 23.7 for 0.7H2+1CO. The rate of synthesis with 1H2+1CO feed increased linearly with operating pressure from 7.8 to 21.4 atmospheres. A semifundamental rate equation of the form [r=a'PH2 0.6pco 0.4- ?r0.5PH200.5] was shown to fit the data satisfactorily. The relative usage of hydrogen to carbon monoxide decreased with increasing conversion, passed a minimum, and then increased. Apparently water is the principal primary product and carbon dioxide is produced by subsequent water-gas shift reaction. In another group of experiments water, carbon dioxide, argon, and methane were added to 1H2+1CO feed to a nitrided iron catalyst. Argon and methane were only diluents. Carbon dioxide was a slight inhibitor and water vapor was a strong inhibitor to the rate of synthesis. Water accelerated the water-gas shift and usually increased methane production. Important factors of catalyst geometry in determining rate were found to be particle size and extent of reduction. Apparently the active portion of the catalyst is confined to a layer of 0.01 to 0.02 cm from the external surface of particles. A special solution was made of differential equations relating re¬action at the catalyst surface to diffusion in pores of the catalyst for spherical particles with an active layer surrounding an inert core. The equation derived expressed the experimental data reasonably well. Diffusivities determined by this equation varied from 3 to 24X10-6 cm2/sec; these values are of the same magnitude as observed for the diffusion of gases in liquid. The appendix presents a group of synthesis experiments at pressures of 21.4 to 103 atmospheres. In this range the rate of synthesis on nitrided iron catalysts increased with pressure to the 0.74 to 0.84 power.

The Bureau of Mines measured fiber dimensions on crocidolites (riebeckite-asbestos and magnesioriebeckite-asbestos) from the world's four crocidolite mining regions. The objective of the study was to determine whether there are measurable morphological differences between crocidolite fibers that correlate with the high reported incidence of mesothelioma in miners and mill employees in the Cape Province of South Africa and Western Australia, as compared with little or no reported incidence of this cancer in the Transvaal Province of South Africa or Bolivia. Fiber dimensions measured with the scanning transmission elec-tron microscope showed that crocidolites from Western Australia and the Cape Province have more thin fibers than crocidolites from Bolivia and the Transvaal Province.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health investigated how the starting of induction motors may cause nuisance tripping of short-circuit protection on coal mine power systems. This research had a dual purpose: 1) to identify how motor-start waveforms differ from those for short circuits and 2) to devise a method to provide short-circuit protection without intentional time delays to account for motor starts. This technology will help ensure that surface temperatures of energized electrical apparatus will not exceed gas or dust ignition thresholds when short circuits occur.

The National Granite Commission at its annual meeting in Norfolk, Va., in January, 1930, passed a resolution requesting the Bureau of Mines to conduct an economic study of the granite industry. In with this request a preliminary review has been made of trends in the production and uses of block granite.. Some unfavorable conditions were thus brought to light, and certain suggestions regarding a more orderly and consistent growth in the industry are herein discussed. The results of the study are, presented in this report for the earnest consideration of. the industry, and comments are invited, not only on this report but as to future work that might be accomplished by the Bureau of Mines. The authors desire to acknowledge many helpful suggestions and comments from Paul M. Tyler of the Bureau of Mines and from Harris F. Sherman, secretary of the National Building Granite Quarries Association. Miss A. T. Coons of the Bureau of Mines rendered valuable assistance through her wide knowledge of granite statistics. The block granite industry has shown little expansion during recent years. While the value of the annual production has grown from about $14,000,000 in 1904 to nearly $25,000,000 in 1928, the increment in value is caused mainly by mounting prices rather than by increased production. Even granite for memorials shows a very small advance in production volume, although the value has increased from about $3,500,060 in 1904 to more than $11,000,000 in 1928, which is the most consistent growth of any branch of the industry. The value of building granite has fallen for a number of years much below the figure for 1904, and in 1928 was very little in advance of the value attained 24 years previously. The use of granite paving blocks and rubble has shown a gradual decline.

1. It has been proposed that the addition of enough limestone to an open -hearth s lag to give a CaO-3P2O5 ratio of approximately 2-followed by SiO2 firing in an oxidizing atmosphere under the proper conditions of time and temperature will result in a clinker having a magnetic phase containing a preponderance of Mn, Fe, Al, and Mg as oxides and a nonmagnetic phase consisting for the most part of a phosphorus-containing dicalcium silicate. It has been postulated further that the metal oxide phase can be recovered by fine grinding and magnetic separation. These broad principles have been substantiated by numerous clinkering operations made in an electrically fired studio-type kiln, a batch rotary kiln, and a continuous rotary kiln and by magnetic separations made in a Davis -tube separator and a laboratory-size Jeffrey-Steffensen three -roll continuous separator. 2. Quenching the clinker after firing seems to improve its grindability. Microscopic examination of the ground clinker indicates .that the oxide phase grinds down at a somewhat faster rate than the silicate phase. 3. Very fine grinding is necessary to approach liberation, of the oxide phase from the silicate phase. Grinding to ininus-325-mesh, followed by magnetic separation, gave only a rougher concentrate, which had to be reground before final separation. 4. Although the manganese content of the final concentrate was higher, there was some evidence that manganese recovery was lower from a clinker made from a flush s lag than one made from a mixture of tap and flush slags. A possible explanation is that a clinker made from a mixture of slags has a higher iron content and hence is more magnetic and more easily separated.

Several sets of questions and answers on the fundamentals of first aid to the injured, based on the Manual of First-Aid Instruction of the United States Bureau of Mines, are now in use in various parts of the United States. Persons experienced in first-aid instruction believe that a standardized set of questions and answers will assist materially in preparing men for examin- ations conducted by the Bureau for first-aid certificates. Inquiries as to whether a set of standardized questions and answers is available have been made frequently by those training men for the Bureau of Mines examination for certificates. It is believed that the following list of 171 questions and answers com- piled directly from the manual will be useful to company officials and em- ployees who are engaged in cooperative first-aid training to qualify for Bureau of Mines certificates. The list may also be used by field men of the Bureau in training instructors preparatory to a cooperative training campaign and in examining classes or individuals for first-aid certificates. Objective: On-the-job training (OJT) is a common means of training workers. By definition, it seems relatively simple. However, to be effective, training must go beyond the simple process of following an experienced worker around the workplace— sometimes called the "follow Joe" method. NIOSH researchers spoke with human resources personnel, safety and health specialists, supervisors, experienced miners, and new miners and found that OJT was of high interest, but was rarely part of a formal or standardized program. Various training methods have evolved to ensure that a trainee will absorb the information presented rather than simply emulate what the instructor is teaching. These methods have been brought together into a published guide for developing an effective formalized OJT program. The guide (Information Circular (IC) 9479) is called "Coaching Skills for On-the-Job Trainers." It contains materials and suggestions for your company or mine to conduct a 1-day workshop for teaching OJT trainers how to be better coaches to less experienced workers. The guide was created by the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory and a safety professional from a private mining company.

The survey, which provided information on Appalachian region coals only, indicated that such important coal- beds as the Upper and Lower Freeport and the Upper Kittanning show significant sulfur reductions when crushed to 14-mesh top size. For many other coalbeds amenability to sulfur liberation by crushing was indicated, although too few samples were available to draw firm conclusions,

Within the past three years numerous inquiries for information on oil shale have been received by the Bureau of Manes. These inquiries have been increasing to such an extent that it has seemed advisable to issue a short paper prior to the publication of a bulletin on the subject, giving a, general discussion of the subject and a comprehensive list of references, so that those interested in the details of obtaining oil from shale can find additional information without much difficulty. Some of those who desire information are interested only in a general discussion of the subject, or are not in a position to refer to books and' articles describing the industry. The material for this paper is largely derived from published information on oil shale. Much of the information is obtained-from the books and articles mentioned in the list of references, and has been compiled with the intent of furnishing information to those not interested in all the details.

Acids, neutral oils, and pitch were produced by distillation of low-temperature lignite tar and processed to upgrade them into more valuable products: The acids were separated from the distillate and catalytically dealkylated to produce phenol, cresol, and xylenol. Aromatic and naphthene fractions of the neutral oil were converted into phthalic and maleic anhydrides by catalytic hydrodealkylation and vapor- phase oxidation. Paraffins and n-olefins from the neutral oil were processed into alkybenzene sulfonate, a biodegradable substance. Aromatic materials from the neutral oil were also extracted with organic compounds and the extract hydrogenated under pressure to produce jet fuel. The pitch was processed by various means to change its characteristics and make it suitable for similar applications as high- temperature tar pitch, including preparation of carbon black and metallurgical electrodes. In most cases, products obtained from the low-temperature tar were examined for physical and chemical characteristics and for potential commercial utility. Information obtained from this research would be helpful if a new coal- chemical industry based on tar utilization were established.

"Corundum and andalusite were discovered in August 1944 on what is now known as the Blue Metal group of claims. The property, comprising five unpatented lode claims, is situated 20 Miles northwest of Yerington in the Buckskin Mining District, Douglas County, Nevada, An engineer of the. Bureau of nines examined the property on November 1, 1944, and recommended a small: amount of drifting and crosscutting to determine more definitely the extent and character of the ore deposit. The work that had been done by the owners was for sampling purposes only and was confined to a few small pits on the outcrop, and no effort had been made. to delimit the ore zone. Samples taken from the best surface showings were sent to the experimental station in Salt Lake City for beneficiation tests. The results of the preliminary test work appeared favorable, and upon the strength of them and the recommendations made by the Bureau, 2.5 miles of access road was approved and completed early in 1945. Exploration was started on June 24 and completed September 26, 1945.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mines resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assistant director.This paper is one of many reporting on various aspects of the Bureau of Mines program initiated in August 1939 by passage of the Strategic Minerals act, the scope of which was. greatly expanded by subsequent legislation.Some of these papers were published as war minerals reports, others as bulletins, technical papers, reports of investigations, and information circulars of the Bureau of Mines or• in, technical journals.The Bureau's program at first included separate investigations by the Mining and metallurgical Divisions, but these were consolidated under Assistant Director R. S. Dean beginning July 1, 1942. Mining and metallurgical investigations carried on in three regional organizations more closely integrated thereafter by a staff of specialists, who reviewed findings made in the field and in Bureau Laboratories, considered proposals for additional work, revised reports for publication, and served as advisors to the assistant director."

Kroemer(1-3) and Kroemer et al.(4) define the isoinertial technique of strength assessment as one in which mass properties of an object are held constant, as in lifting a given weight over a predetermined distance. Several strength assessment procedures possess this characteristic. Most commonly associated with the term is a specific test developed to provide a relatively quick assessment of a subject's maximal lifting capacity using a modified weight-lifting device.(1,5) The classic psychophysical methodology of assessing maximum acceptable weights of lift is also considered an isoinertial technique under this definition.(6) While the definition provided by Kroemer(1) and Kroemer et al.(4) has been most widely accepted in the literature, some have applied the term "isoinertial" to techniques that differ somewhat from the preceding definition, such as in a description of the Isotechnologies B-200 strength testing device.(7) Rather than lifting a constant mass the B-200 applies a constant force against which the subject performs an exertion. The isoinertial tests described here apply to situations in which the mass to be moved by a musculoskeletal effort is set to a constant. Is Isoinertial Testing Psychophysical or Is Psychophysical Testing Isoinertial? As various types of strength tests have evolved over the past few decades, some unfortunate developments in terminology have arisen to describe and classify different strength assessment procedures. This is particularly evident in sorting out various tests that have been labeled "isoinertial." One example was cited earlier. Another problem that has evolved is that the term "isoinertial strength" has two connotations. The first is the conceptual definition: isoinertial strength tests include any strength test in which a constant mass is handled. In practice, however, the term is often used to denote a specific strength test in which subjects' maximal lifting capacity is determined using a machine and a constant mass is lifted.(1,5) Partially as a result of this dual connotation, the literature contains references to both "isoinertial strength test" as a psychophysical variant(8) and the psychophysical method as an "isoinertial strength test" (4,9) To lay the framework for the next two chapters, the authors will briefly discuss some operational definitions of tests of isoinertial and psychophysical strength. In stating that the isoinertial strength test is a variant of the psychophysical method, Ayoub and Mital(8) refer to the specific strength test developed by Kroemer(1) and McDaniel et al.(5) Clearly, this isoinertial protocol has many similarities to the psychophysical method: both are dynamic; weight is adjusted in both; and both measure the load a subject is willing to endure under specified circumstances. However, while both deal with lifting and adjusting loads, there are significant differences between the psychophysical (isoinertial) technique and the Kroemer-McDaniel (isoinertial) protocol in their procedures and the use of the data collected in these tests. "This paper describes the history of LDV measurements employed in research involving gas-solid flows. Much of the discussion deals with measurement techniques employed to obtain separate and simultaneous solid and gas phase velocities. Also, LDV based measurement techniques that arc used to obtain particle size and concentration information in conjunction with the velocity measurements arc presented.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous examples of industrial processes in which the motion of a solid or droplet dispersed phase in a suspending gas phase is critically important. The applications range from spray droplets injected into combustion chambers to the understanding of the time release mechanisms of particles generated by dissolving pharmaceutical tablets. In many of these processes, the heat, mass, and/or momentum transfer between the dispersed phase and the suspending fluid arc the items of interest. In the past, much of the phenomena were characterized by empirical models derived from flow averaged measurements. Gradual developments in laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV), have provided researchers with an unobtrusive measurement technique capable of obtaining the particle size velocity and concentration with good spatial resolution.In the two decades that LDV instrumentation has been available, most of the uses have concentrated on single phase fluid flow measurements. The light scattered from seed particles small enough to follow complex fluid motions, including turbulence, is converted into velocity information. While the utility of this instrument in single phase flows has been demonstrated beyond question, the use of LDV in gas-solid multiphase flows has had a more gradual development. The measurements ·of interest in these flow regimes are usually the velocity of the suspending fluid as well as that of the dispersed particulate phase. Early investigators were quick to see the potential of this instrument for measurements in gas-solid flows. The interest soon expanded to the development of instruments that could also simultaneously measure particle size and concentration within a two-phase flow field.This paper tracks the historical development of LDV technology as applied to gas-solid flows. The techniques to measure particle velocity, size, and concentration arc treated in separate sections although much of the development occurred simultaneously. Finally, some unique applications conducted at West Virginia University and other locations will be discussed in the application section."

The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively prospected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941. The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program. The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.

To initiate this project a critical evaluation of the pre-sent phosphate mining industry in the Western phosphate field was conducted. Mines were visited, mine operators were interviewed and pertinent literature studied. Three phosphate mining enterprises were reviewed and mining cost estimates prepared. The report discusses the present state of phosphate processing, rock alteration and location. New ideas and concepts are proposed to improve the recovery of phosphate rock from the Phosphoria formation. The report evaluates two variations to the present phosphate open pit mining methods, which were developed to improve the economics of mining phosphate and to better accomplish necessary reclamation and accelerate the time for environmental recovery. A material handling system using conveyor haulage will eliminate the need for trucks. Terrace haulback utilizes safety benches to haul and dispose of waste in the mined out pit. Ore will be removed from the pit via an inclined, cable-supported mobile conveyor.
