The oil shale from the Mahogany zone of the Green River formation in northwestern Colorado has the greatest potential in the United States for early utilization. A large reserve of adequately rich shale is available to support a sizable industry, and crushing of tremendous tonnages will be required if conventional processing methods are used. This report presents Bureau of Mines data on crushing experiments, physical properties, and related information for Colorado oil shale. Among the properties important to crushing are slab-forming tendency, resilience, slippery character of the richer grades, and heterogeneous nature of an average charge of Colorado oil shale.

Enormous quantities of organic wastes are produced each year in the United States. The total amount is in excess of 2 billion tons and at least 880 million tons of this is moisture- and ash-free organic material (dry organic solids), representing a potential energy source of significant magnitude that is not being utilized. Bureau of Mines scientists have developed methods for converting these wastes to convenient energy forms. This report itemizes and evaluates for the first time in detail the quantities and sources of moisture- and ash-free organic material contained in manure, urban refuse, industrial wastes, sewage solids, and agricultural wastes in the United States. Furthermore, estimates are presented for amounts of organic wastes collected or concentrated. The potential for fuel, either oil or gas, from both the total organic wastes generated and those collected or concentrated is also estimated.

"INTRODUCTION The Friedensville district was one of the most important zinc-producing areas in the United States from 1859 to 1893. The ore minerals near the surface were principally calamine and smithsonite, but with depth sphalerite was found in increasing proportions. The ore bodies of the district are reported to have been in chimneys, occurring in folded and faulted beds of Beekmantown limestone of Ordovician age.The Correll was one of five mines near Friedensyille that were exten¬sively exploited. The high-grade ore shoots were mined to a depth of several hundred feet, but it is believed that inability to compete with lower-cost production elsewhere, rather than exhaustion of the ore bodies, compelled the mines to close.There is no record to indicate that any attempt was made during the period of operation to explore for additional ore in the limestone beds down the dip below the mine workings. The possibility that exploration might reveal additional ore in the limestone beds below the known ore shoots led the Bureau of Mines to diamond-drill the Correll property between September 1943 and January 1944."

Studies showing the effect of mixing hot exhaust gases with the intake air of a four-stroke-cycle Diesel engine are described. The results indicate a marked increase in carbon monoxide in tip exhaust gases, a decrease in oxides of nitrogen, and no significant effect on aldehydes. The increase in carbon monoxide was greater at higher fuel-air ratios and was caused partly by the increase in fuel-air ratio end partly by the decrease in oxygen concentration resulting when exhaust has was added. The application of these results to the use of Diesel engines underground is considered.

"Electron spin resonance (ESR) and cytotoxicity measurements were made on newly fractured silica to examine specifically the role of the fractured-induced, siliconbased radicals (Si· and SiO·), and silica-generated hydroxyl (·OH) radicals in the mechanism of the cell membrane damage by silica. The concentration of the Si· and SiO· radicals was controlled through decay processes, thermal annealing, and boiling, while that of the ·OH radicals was varied by using catalase, superoxide dismutase, KMnO4, Ha2seO3, ascorbic acid, and metal ions, and monitored via ESR spectroscopy. The dust's cytotozicity potential was evaluated by measuring the silica-induced hemolysis and also by determining lipid peroxidation (using linoleic acid). Prom the comparison of hemolysis and ESR results it is deduced that the radicals play little· or no role in the silica-induced hemolysis. However, the lipid peroxidation data indicate that the radicals might be involved in the initiation of an oxidative chain reaction leading to the macrophage membrane damage through lipid peroxidation. INTRODUCTIONThe biochemical mechanism of Quartz-related pneumoconiosis is still not fully understood. It is believed, nevertheless, that one event of primary importance is the perturbation of cell membranes by the dust particles (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Parazzi, et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Shi et al., 1989; Summerton et al., 1977). The ensuing cell-membrane damage unleashes certain lytic enzymes resulting in additional cell injury and eventual fibrosis (Nolan et al., 1981; Summerton et al., 1977). Thus considerable effort is currently being made towards the understanding of the processes by which quartz particles disrupt the membrane of a red blood cell (RBC) or a pulmonary alveolar macrophage (PAM). A simple but important method of evaluating the membrane damage potential of a dust is the hemolysis test (Harington et al., 1971). Even though this test is used routinely for screening dusts for their cytotoxicity potential, the biochemical mechanism underlying the cell lysis by many dusts, including quartz, is still controversial (Kilroe-Smith, 1974; Singh and Rahman, 1987), and this provided us the impetus for the present undertaking."

The value of mineral production increased 6.2% in 1976. With the exception of coal, practically all commodities registered an increase in production and value; most had an increase in unit value. Total value exceeded $1 billion for the first time. The increase in nearly all nonmetallic mineral production was a complete reversal of the 1975 experience. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble and was second in bauxite and scrap mica, third in oystershell, third in kaolin, and fifth in dimension limes-tone and dimension marble. International Trade.-The international trade passing through the Mobile customs district was valued at $2,524 minion in fiscal year 1976, up 20% from that of the previous year. Of the total value of trade passing through the district, 52% of the value of experts and 89% of the value of imports were handled through the port at Mobile. The major export Commodity was coal through McDuffie Coal Terminal which amounted to nearly 2.9 million tons, up from 2.4 million tons in 1975. This report describes the design, development and manufacture of a prototype quiet hard rock stoper drill and results of its field tests. It is shown that the stoper drill noise level can be reduced from 118 dBA to below 100 dBA by using this design. The design concept of this drill is based on a valveless independent rotation system, use of an integral muffler and pivot mount. The drill was manufactured in a standard commercial drill manufacturing setup and organization. The design and production technology proved that commercially viable quiet drills can be made available for mine use.

This bulletin presents a summary of available information regarding the sources of uranium, radium, and vanadium, the methods used in treating the ores, and the uses of the finished products. In particular the paper describes the ores found in the United States, giving especial attention to those characteristics of the ores and the conditions of their occurrence that affect mining and treatment. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. Many bench-scale tests and studies have been conducted in developing and testing a chloride-volatilization procedure Ear treating low-grade manganese ore from the Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit of Aroostook County, Maine. The ore, averaging 10 to 12 percent Mn, contains manganese in several forms and is resistant to concentration or extraction by usual physical and chemical procedures. Over 90 percent of the manganese, content of the ore has been recovered using a chloridizing roast in which the ore was heated at 950°-9b0' C. in a circulating stream of hydrochloric acid gas. Chlorides of manganese and iron were volatilized and swept to a fume collector, where they were condensed and separated from the [as] stream. Operation of a small, 1-pound-per-hour shaft Furnace produced enough chlorides for studying other factors in an integrated process such as: (1) Conversion of the chlorides to oxides; (2) recovery of HC1 gas of suitable concentration Ear recycling to the chloridizer; and (3) control of the Mn-Fe ratio in the oxide product to produce a suitable feed for ferromanganese production.

"INTRODUCTION During the summer of 1945, the Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation and program of churn drilling near the village of Tennyson in Grant County, Wis. The work was undertaken as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin at a time when all effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the war program.The area for special investigation was selected on the basis of favorable structural disclosures, evidence of widespread zinc mineralization, absence of any great amount of exploration to depth beneath the productive shallow workings, and the favorable results of several churn-drill holes in the village of Tennyson.During the Bureau's investigation, 30 churn-drill holes aggregating5,888 feet were completed.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to-the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The Bureau of Mines monitored surface subsidence and water level fluctuations in 10 shallow observation wells above a series of four adjacent longwall panels in southwestern Pennsylvania, for about 4 yr. This study attempted to correlate the changes in the water levels within the observation wells to the measured vertical and horizontal ground movements associated with subsidence. Results of this study indicate that the fluctuation of the water levels appears to be a function of the well location relative to the mine layout and the proximity of mining. Wells are generally unaffected by mining of a preceding panel unless they are located within the angle of draw for that panel. Wells located at the centerline of a longwall panel exhibit the greatest fluctuation and head loss. This relationship may be related to the strain developed by the advancing longwall face. The water levels in the wells monitored fell at the greatest rate when the ground surrounding the well was in tension. The rate of the decline decreased as the dynamic development of the strains was changing from tension to compression. The water levels were found to be near the premining level before the ground was subject to maximum compressive strain. Nine of the ten wells investigated recovered to their premining water level after mining was completed.

This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the Chief Consolidated Co., is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The concentrator adjoins the town of Eureka, Utah, in the Tintic mining district. The Chief Consolidated, Eureka Lilly, Plutus, and Grand Central mines, all of which are owned or controlled by the Chief Consolidated Mining Co., are the principal sources of milling ore. The ore is transported from mines to mill by railroad. Although all the mines are within 3 miles of the mill, the railroad distance varies from 1 mile to 12 miles.

A table of factors for rapid, accurate calculation of the volume of pure helium in cylindrical steel containers, at base conditions of 14.7 psia and 70° F, is presented. The table covers a pressure range from 10 to 10,000 psin in 10-psi increments and a temperature range of 0° to 120° F in 2° increments. The volume of helium is calculated from the observed pressure and temperature of the helium, expressed as a factor from the table, and the known internal volume of the container. The calculation requires a single multiplication. A discussion and evaluation of the accuracy obtainable and a derivation of the formula used (which takes into account compressibility of helium, thermal expansion of steel containers, and the stretch of steel due to internal pressure) are presented. An example showing how the table can be used is given also.

This report describes investigations by the Bureau of Mines designed to establish the noise level and spectrum of various types of pneumatic rock drills and to furnish information that would be useful in conducting sound measurements in mining environments and in reducing the noise generated in pneumatic drilling. These investigations show that (1) the noise generated by the drills in the frequencies below 100 cps is caused by the impact of the piston and drill steel, in the frequency range between 100 and 2,000 cps by the exhausting of air from the ports, and in the frequencies above 2,000 cps by the resonant frequencies of steel drill parts and of drill steel; (2) satisfactory instruments and instrumentation systems are available for field and laboratory measurements; (3) reliable sound measurements can be made in mining environments; and (4) devices can be developed that will abate the noise.

The United States coal mining industry has traditionally experienced difficulty in controlling dust levels below the occupational exposure limit. While improvements in face ventilation and water spray nozzles have decreased dust exposures, approximately eight percent of experienced coal miners are still developing Coal Worker?s Pneumoconiosis. This investigation tested the feasibility of enhancing existing engineering dust controls by mounting a simple barrier on a longwall shearer that separated the operators from the cutting drums. The barrier was constructed and tested above ground at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Pittsburgh Research Laboratory longwall gallery test facility. A 96-percent reduction of respirable dust occurred at the headgate sampling position when tested at 2.4 m/sec (480 ft/min). The average dust level decreased from 39 mg/m3 to 1.5 mg/m3 by utilizing the barrier.

Recent studies indicate that the United States halt substantial reserves of ilmenite, one of the major titanium minerals. However, the studies showed that sources of rutile, another important source of titanium are limited. This paper summarizes and evaluates results and conclusions reached by the various investigations initiated by the Bureau of Mines and others pertaining to the titanium mineral resources of the Nation. Domestic occurrences of ilmenite that are economically exploitable by present-day beneficiation methods are found in Florida, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia. These deposits are estimated to contain 50.3 million tons of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Occurrences of ilmenite that cannot be processed economically under present technological conditions are found in California, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Wyoming. These reserves amount to 51.1 million tons of TiO2. Reserves of rutile found in the United States are estimated to be 1.8 to 2.1 million tons of TiO2. Other than occurrences in Florida and South Carolina, rutile is found either in small scattered bodies or in deposits where the mineral cannot be recovered economically by present beneficiation methods.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and cuts in the various reining districts of the United States. The mining methods described are those used in the mines of the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co., a Mexico corporation whose holding company in the United States is the Greene Cananea Copper Co. The mines are at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico, 25 miles directly south of the international boundary, approximately in 31° nor to latitude and 110 to 130° west longitude. Cananea is connected with the boundary towns of Naco and Nogales, Ariz., by a standard-gage railroad.
