Isometric strength is defined as the capacity to produce force or torque with a voluntary isometric (muscle[s] maintain[s] a constant length) contraction. The key thing to understand about this type of contraction and strength measurement is that no body movement occurs during the measurement period. The tested person's body angles and posture remain the same throughout the test. Isometric strength has historically been the type most studied and measured. It is probably the easiest to measure and to understand. Some strength researchers feel that isometric strength data may be difficult to apply to some "real life" situations because in most real circumstances people are moving - they are not static. Other researchers counter that it is equally difficult to determine the speed of movement of a person or group of persons doing a job (each moves in his or her unique manner and speed across the links and joints of the body). Thus, dynamic strength test data collected on persons moving at a different speed and/or in a different posture from the "real world" condition will be just as hard to apply. In truth, neither is better - they are different measurements. Both researchers and users should collect and use data that they understand and that fits their application. Workplace Assessment When a worker is called on to perform a physically demanding lifting task, the external load produces moments - tendencies to produce motion, also called torques - about various joints of the body.(1) Often these moments are augmented by the force of gravity acting on the mass of various body segments. For example, in a biceps curl exercise, the moment produced by the forearm flexors must counteract the moment of the weight held in the hands as well as the moment caused by gravity acting on the forearm's center of mass. To perform the task successfully, the muscles responsible for moving the joint must develop a greater moment than the combined moments of the external load and body segment. It should be clear that, at each joint of the body, there is a limit to the strength that the muscle can produce to move ever-increasing external loads. This concept forms the basis of isometric muscle strength prediction modeling.(1) The following procedures are generally used with this biomechanical analysis technique. First, workers are observed (and usually photographed or video-taped) as they perform physically demanding tasks. For each task the posture of the torso and the extremities are documented at the time of peak exertion. The postures are then re-created using a computerized software package, which calculates the load moments produced at various joints of the body as the task is performed. The values obtained during this analysis are then compared to population norms for isometric strength obtained from a population of industrial workers. "Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism is still not fully under stood. Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the Major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these-actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed sub¬jects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting dis¬ease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the ex¬pression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). This article summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica dusts and how silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on hydrogen bonding and free-radical interactions."

The objective of this U.S. Bureau of Mines hydrologic-subsidence investigation was to evaluate the effects of longwall mining on the local ground water regime through field monitoring and numerical modeling. Field data were obtained from multiple-position borehole extensometers (MPBX's) that were used to measure subsurface displacements. Survey monuments were installed to measure mining-induced surface deformations. Numerous drawdown and recovery tests were performed to characterize hydrologic properties of the overburden strata. Coreholes were drilled above the study area to determine lithologic and strength characteristics of the overburden strata using the rock samples collected. Electronic recorders were installed on all monitoring wells to continuously monitor ground water levels in coordination with mining of the longwall panels. A combined finite element model of the deformation of overlying strata, and it's influence on ground water flow was used to define the change in local and regional water budgets. The predicted effects of the postmining ground water system determined by the model correlated well with field data collected from the fieldsite. Without an infiltration rate added to the model, a static decrease of 3.0 m (10 ft) in water level would occur due to mining of both longwall panels and if an infiltration rate was inputted in the model, no predicted long-term effects would occur to the ground water system.

This paper is the third of a series recording the results of tests made at various quarries throughout the United States to determine (1) the relation between the size gradation of feed to, and product from, primary crushers, (2) the particle shape of the crushed product, (3) the differences in gradation and particle shape produce- by different types of primary crushers, and (4) the differences in gradation and particle shape caused by crushing different kinds of stone. Progress reports 1 and 2 dealt with comparisons of different types of crushers crushing the seine tyre of stone. This report deals with relationship between feed and product of two different limestones, as to size distribution and particle shape, when crashed in the same crusher.

"INTRODUCTION The Cphir Hill Consolidated mine was examined 2/ in January 1944. It was recommended that the mine be explored for the purpose of increasing of lead and zinc ore.The Bureau of Mines began exploratory work at the mine in June 1944 and completed it in June 1945. The work was planned to indicate ore that could be developed and extracted quickly and consisted of core drilling and trenching.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Its the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by cash exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. The Mateen deposit comprises two large spodumene-bearing pegmatite dikes that outcrop along the, side and crest of a hill overlooking 'Rill City in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota. The Bureau of Mines investigated the Mateen deposit as part of a comprehensive study of the lithium mineral-production possibilities in the Black Hills area. The work was undertaken during the second World War, when the demand for certain lithium salts and compounds exceeded the small productive capacity of the industry. During the course of the investigation, the Bureau of Mines took 61 large channel samples from surface trenches, 4 channel samples from a shaft, and 3 from the face of an open cut. In addition, 8 diamond core-drill holes were completed to investigate the attitude of one of the dikes at depth. Metallurgical tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of beneficiating spodumene-bearing ores from the Mateen dikes.

THE ABRASIVES INDUSTRY throughout the world enjoyed a profitable year. With the exception of tripoli, the quantity of each kind of abrasive produced in the United States was greater than for any of the past 5 years and value of each was greater than for many years. Production of silicon carbide both in the United States and in Canada was the largest since 1960. Abrasive machining, which offers great potential for the increased Use of aluminum oxide, contributed to increased industrial productivity. Diamonds from the sea off the coast of South-West Africa attracted wide interest. Much of the production from this source has been gem diamond, and there is little likelihood of significant quantities of industrial diamond from that source. Manufactured diamond from all free-world sources was sold in the United States in 1964.

This Bureau of Mines study estimates typical capital investments, operating costs, and selling prices for two bituminous coal strip mines in the Eastern and Interior provinces and a subbituminous coal operation in the Northern Great Plains province. The annual productions were based on tonnage required to fuel a 250-MM-scfd, high-Btu gas plant. The annual tonnage for the Eastern province mine is 4.8 million tons; for the Interior province mine, 6.72 mi 11 ion tons; and for the Northern Great Plains province mine, 9.2 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of May 12, 1974, under the terms of the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 and early 1974 indexes . Initial capital investment varies: $45,358,600 for the 4.8-million- ton-per-year (MM tpy) mine in the Eastern province, $54,603,000 for the 6.72 MM tpy mine in the Interior province, and $29,871,000 for the 9.2 MM tpy mine in the Northern Great Plains province. Total capital invest-ments for the Eastern province mine, the Interior province mine, and the Northern Great Plains province mine are $61,070,000, $76,753,000, and $56,286,000, respectively. Corresponding selling prices for the coal, per ton, are $4.79, $4.23, and $2.66, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes. These studies are considered typical for the areas involved. Costs will vary depending on specific locations in these areas.

Samples of coal from six beds in the Roslyn-Cle Elum field of Washington were subjected to float-and-sink tests to determine their amenability to the production of high-ash boiler fuel for on-site power generation. Grindability tests and analyses of ash were made. All of the coals would require some degree of cleaning to insure a product of 25 percent ash. With two of the coals the entire size range would have to be washed. With the other four, it would suffice to clean only the coarse coal and bypass the raw fines.

The thrust of this Bureau of Mines report is to relate the size of automobiles to the price of gasoline, and the use of minerals in automobile manufacture to the size of automobiles. Only one of the many plausible scenarios of public reaction to higher gasoline prices, a switch to economy size automobiles, is developed. No account is taken of other potential impacts such as improvements in public transportation or increased occupancy per vehicle. Furthermore, a gasoline price increase is the only incentive to the greater utilization of economy cars that is considered. A gasoline price increase to $0.60 per gallon would reduce the amount of minerals required to produce the automobiles sold in the United States by an estimated 15 percent. Gasoline prices of $0.80 and $1 per gallon would cause declines in mineral requirements for U.S. automobile sales estimated at 26 percent and 35 percent, respectively.

A 20L ignition test chamber has been used to test suspensions of 7 UK and world traded coals in air and O2/CO2 mixtures typical of oxy-combustion conditions. The coals varied in rank from sub-bituminous to bituminous and were tested in varying concentrations from the ignition limit to 400g/m3. Following each successful test the combustion residue was collected, weighed and analysed within a thermogravimetric analyser, allowing Q factors to be estimated. The ignition limit varied slightly in air, but was mostly around the 200g/m3 level. With the exception of Coal C, which was much harder to ignite, it correlated roughly with coal rank. The ignition limit changed significantly with O2 concentration when in mixed O2/CO2 gases. Only a few high volatile coals ignited in 21% O2/CO2 v/v, and then only with a 2500 J, rather than a 1000J, igniter. An increase in O2/CO2 levels to 30 or 35% gave ignition patterns similar to those carried out in air with a further increase to 40% having little additional effect. In addition the minimum ignition concentration decreased with increase in O2. Heterogeneous combustion or gasification of the coal by CO2 appears to be confirmed by comparing weight loss results for air and O2/CO2 mixtures respectively for an equivalent peak pressure rise.

The 53 countries that constituted Africa in 1991 accounted for a significant portion of total world output of a number of mineral commodities. However, total output for the continent declined for many major mineral commodities produced compared with that of 1990. Also, Africa's share of total world output of these commodities generally declined. (See tables 1 and 2.) The most conspicuous declines were for cobalt and copper owing to mining and metal processing difficulties experienced by the world's two largest cobalt producers, Zaire and Zambia. Phosphate rock output declined primarily owing to a sharp fall in production from Morocco, also a leading world producer. Morocco's state corporation for phosphate production experienced marketing problems, leading to the decline.

Landstrom et al. (1985) suggested the possibility of cortical activation during exposure to WBV, however, it is not known how cerebral physiology (oxygenation and blood volume) responds in healthy women during different vibration frequencies. This study examined the role of backrest support and handgrip work on cerebral oxygenation and blood volume responses, during exposure to seated WBV. Methods Fourteen women (age: 23.9 ± 3.5 years) were randomly exposed to three frequencies of WBV (3, 4.5 and 6 Hz at approximately 0.9gr.m.s in the vertical direction) on a customized vibrating base (Advanced Therapy Products, Inc., USA) in a seated posture on three separate days. On the first day, the subjects completed an aerobic fitness test until volitional exhaustion on an arm cranking ergometer (Cybex, MET 300, USA). Each WBV session lasted 30 min (6 min baseline without WBV, 8 min WBV ‘with’ or ‘without’ backrest support, and 4 min recovery from WBV, 8 min WBV with ‘opposite’ backrest condition, and 4 min recovery following WBV). During 8 min WBV exposure ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support, subjects performed maximal voluntary rhythmic handgrip contractions with their right hand for 1 min using a dynamometer. To obtain regional oxygenation and blood volume responses, a NIRS sensor (MicroRunman, NIM, Inc., PA, USA) was placed on the anterior right frontal lobe just below the hair and close to fronto-temporalis region (Maikala et al. 2005). Results Baseline oxygenation and blood volume values were recorded during recovery from each WBV session of ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support. The physiological change in oxygenation and blood volume during each frequency (3, 4.5, and 6 Hz) for both backrest (‘with’ and ‘without’ a backrest) and workload (WBV only and WBV combined with rhythmic handgrip contractions) was calculated as the difference between the maximum values identified for each WBV condition of backrest and workload and baseline values (Maikala et al. 2005). This U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report evaluates three stress-transfer-modification concepts for their potential in reducing longwall gate road stresses and closures. In each of the three concepts - packwalling, gob infilling, and entry filling -support structures are constructed on the headgate side of the panel parallel with or inby the face line. When the headgate becomes the tailgate of the adjacent panel, these structures are in place to accept stresses transferred from the mined-out panel. Using the USBM nonlinear boundary-element program MULSIM/NL, baseline models of typical longwall stress transfer behavior were developed for both intermediate depth and deep mining conditions. These models were verified by comparing model results with field measurements and observations. The stress-transfer-modification concepts were then incorporated into the deep baseline model to quantify the effects of each concept on tailgate closure. Modeling results indicated that entry filling is the most effective concept in reducing tailgate escapeway closure. Using only 18 m3 of a weak fill per meter of face advance (7.3 yd3 per ft of face advance), tailgate escapeway closure was reduced by 33%. By improving the quality of the fill, similar results were achieved using 50% less volume.

Two recent unplanned detonations occurred during blasting operations in sulfide-bearing ores in a Nevada gold mine. Other premature detonations have also reportedly occurred at other Nevada, California, and Arizona operations within the past few years, with increasing frequency. Unplanned or premature detonations can be extremely hazardous to life and can cause extensive property damage. A miner was injured in one of these occurrences. This report, by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, is intended to acquaint personnel involved in such mining activities with the basic causes for these accidents. These causes include the exothermic oxidation of pyrite (FeS2) and formation of ferrous sulfate (FeS04), the exothermic and energetic reaction of the ferrous sulfate with ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO)-based explosives, and the associated elevated temperatures that can set off detonators and explosives in the boreholes. Recommendations for safe operation by the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau, and the mine involved with the recent incidents include monitoring temperatures in the blast holes, analyzing for sulfate and ferrous ions, and limiting the time between loading and firing in accordance with conditions in the blast holes. Other procedures for safe operations should fit specific conditions in, the mines.

Nigger Hill is in western Lawrence County, South Dakota, and on it is the little camp of Tinton. The Wyoming line runs along the west side of the hill and crosses the ridge which is the hill's continuation about miles north-northwest of Tinton.

MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations and dynamic transient-state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under the influence of natural ventilation, fans, fires, or any combination of these. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters such as the development of new mine workings or changes in ventilation control structures, external influences (varying outside temperatures), and internal influences (fires). Extensive output enables detailed, quantitative analysis of the effects that the alteration will cause to the ventilation system. The program was developed at Michigan Technological University (MTU), Houghton, MI, with support from the Bureau of Mines. A personal computer (PC) version of the program was completed under contract for the Bureau by MTU. The purpose of this report is to document the installation and use of the PC version of the program MFIRE.
