This paper examines the comparative economics of cast blasting to alternative stripping techniques. There are several scenarios where a mine may consider introducing cast blasting. The results of an ongoing study to determine the response of full contact rock bolts to shock waves due to blasting are presented. A time domain systems modeling and analysis technique was used to identify the axial and bending response of the bolt when explosives charges are detonated at close-in distances.

"A discrete element computer program named DMC_BLAST (Distinct Motion Code) has been underdevelopment since 1987 for modeling rock blasting (Preece & Taylor, 1989). This program employsexplicit time integration and uses spherical or cylindrical elements that are represented as circles in two dimensions (2-D). DMC_BLAST calculations compare favorably with data from actual bench blasts (Preece et al, 1993b)."

Manufacturers and users of energetic material (e.g., propellants, explosives, pyrotechnics (PEP)) generate unserviceable, obsolete, off-specification, damaged, and contaminated items that are characterized as "reactive wastes" by definition, and therefore regulated under RCRA, Subtitle C, as hazardous waste. Energetic wastes, to include waste ordnance and munitions items, have historically been disposed of by open burning/open detonation (OB/OD), particularly by the Department of Defense (DoD). However, increasing regulatory constraints have led to the recent reduction and limited use of OB/OD treatment.

The advent of more powerful explosives, increased bench heights, and larger diameter blastholes has necessitated the use of presplitting techniques in sub-bituminous coal mines. The combination of these factors has increased the energy concentration during blasting, producing severe overbreak problems in the final pit walls. Presplitting with large diameter blastholes has proven to be the most viable method of reducing back break in sub-bituminous coal mines.

This paper will be presented jointly by El Dorado Chemical Co. and Arch of Illinois. It will deal with the simultaneous blasting of multiple overburden seams in surface coal mining. With the development of a new pit in Southern Illinois, production personnel with Arch were faced with serious equipment cycling problems. The solution to the problem was the development of a procedure that reduced drill movements on the highwall.

AECL Research (AECL) has constructed an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) as a facility for research and development in the Canadian Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program. The objectives of the program are to develop and evaluate the technology to ensure safe, permanent disposal of Canada's nuclear fuel waste. Several multidisciplinary experiments and engineering demonstrations are planned for the URL over the next ten years.

Modern blast engineering involves the use of modern technology to provide more efficient blasts. Through the use of improved measurement techniques more information can be obtained on many of the physical variables of a quarry rock face. By employing this information, a more efficient production shot can be designed and loaded. Along with improvements in production, greater safety and improved environmental impact can be achieved. This paper concerns the employment of modern blast engineering at a granite quarry in the Southeastern United States. The test period extended over a period of approximately six months, and this paper will show the results achieved in that time span.
