During the last several years the FBI has been involved with a detailed study of explosives designed to replicate formulations utilized world-wide by terrorists. In addition, numerous formulations , based on literature and internet sources were examined. During the early stages of this work, a good many of the energetic mixtures studied were based on simple ammonium nitrate fertilizer. While the use of ammonium nitrate in commercial explosives is well studied and documented, the characteristics of the mixtures produced by criminals and terrorists have been less well researched. To aid law-enforcement in understanding the properties of these poorly understood formulations, a “cradle to grave” examination of their characteristics was conducted.

The main purpose of this study was to apply the artificial neural network (ANN) models to determine optimal powder factors and predict peak particle velocities, based on a series of observations and input parameters. The used blasthole pattern was V-cut. The locations of blastholes and ignition patterns remained almost constant. The input parameters were 14 geological conditions (i.e., dip, dip direction, spacing, separation, and persistence of 2 discontinuity sets, tunnel orientation, rock strength, RQD, and RMR) and 4 blasting conditions (i.e., distance between blasting points and measuring points, charge weight per delay, drilling length, and blasting efficiency). Data for the ANN application in this study were recently collected in a highway tunnel under construction in Korea. The main rock type in the site was biotitic granite. An optimum ANN model was determined by training models with collected data. The trained model was used to evaluate the prediction capability of the optimum model. It was shown that the ANN model could predict the powder factor and the peak particle velocity depended upon the selected input parameters. Particularly, the ANN model predicted more accurate peak particle velocities than those obtained by the blasting vibration equation. Moreover, the more dominant factors among the input parameters could be determined by analysis of the relative strength effect.

Mining operations at a Wyoming coal mine were progressing to within 300 feet (91 meters) of a high pressure natural gas pipeline. Vibration levels from cast blasting were at a point at which standard designs would exceed permitted limits and could potentially damage the pipeline. Without a confident vibration model, mining would be unable to continue in the pit rendering an entire cut of otherwise mineable coal sterile. To safely blast in the area, linear superposition seedwave analysis techniques were attempted to be used to create a model that could accurately predict the vibration at the pipeline. Four signature holes were fired individually. The four signature waveforms were monitored at eight discrete locations to create thirty-two vibration data points. Two of the monitors were equipped with triggers enabling the calculation of p-wave velocity.

Commercial explosive use in China has been dominated by powdered AN-TNT mixes. Water gels and emulsions are now gaining market acceptance because they offer potential for better performance. Although raw material costs for emulsions initially may be more than AN-TNT mixes, the more expensive technology improves sensitization and leads to lower costs overall for mining operations. A recently completed study in northeast China compared microsphere-modified emulsions to AN-TNT and lower-cost emulsions. Testing of microsphere-modified emulsions at several pH levels indicated a high degree of stability and consistency of VOD. Using 42 mm blastholes in underground mines and 170 mm holes in sandstone open pit mining demonstrated the superior performance of glass microsphere sensitized emulsions. Comparisons of explosive cost, drilling cost, secondary blasting cost and muck pile profile were favorable to the microspheres-sensitized-emulsions. Noxious fumes with AN-TNT or with water-based systems that partially fail during detonation are also a concern. Efficient detonation of emulsion products sensitized with hollow spheres appears to reduce fume generation. Prolonged storage or exposure to water also is not a problem.

For assessing the safety of structures during underground explosions, ground particle velocity gives the best damage criteria, and 100 mm/see of ground particle velocity has been internationally accepted as the threshold value of safety (no damage). Results of extensive controlled underground explosion experiments conducted by the author to study the effects of ground vibrations on specially prepared concrete blocks, and also on low rise buildings and dams showed that no damage normally occurred when ground particle velocities were less than 100 mm/sec. Analysis of a large number of accelerograms from a dam site in India also indicated that no damage occurred to normal structures when integrated ground particle velocities were less than 100 mm/sec. Major damage in well built structures like a dam was noticed for ground particle velocity as high as about 350 mm/sec. These results are also generally substantiated from damage data obtained for various structures during other earthquakes, including Elcentro (1940), Taft (1952), Parkfield (1965), and San Fernando (1971). These studies, therefore, suggest that the damage criteria during underground explosions and earthquakes are similar; and 100 mm/see of ground particle velocity seems to be the general threshold value of safety (no damage) against ground vibrations.

This paper provides a theoretical analysis of shockwaves in an air-deck induced by detonation of an explosive charge and shows that the initial shock pressure in the air-deck at the interface with the explosive charge is only about 1% of the detonation pressure. A rarefaction wave with the low pressure travels back into the explosion detonation products greatly reducing the post-CJ detonation pressure. Additionally, AUTODYN modelling shows that the pressure attenuates further during shockwave propagation along the air-deck. Although the pressure increases at the bottom of the blasthole due to shock reflection, the overall pressure in an air-deck does not increase and is still around 1% of the detonation pressure which is too low to break most rock.

A series of experiments have been performed to characterize fragmentation and microcracking in quartz monzonite copper porphyry. The flyer plate impact method was used to generate plane shock waves in rock specimens for impact pressures between 1.6 and 7.3 GPa and impact pulse durations between 1.1 and 7.0 µs. The effects of pressures up to 4.8 GPa and pulse duration on fragment size distributions and microcrack densities were studied. The results show that pressures effect particle sizes to a greater extent at higher pulse durations. However, changes in pressure and pulse duration show little influence on the density of microcracks induced during explosive loading. These results indicate that the nucleation and growth of microcracks in rock subjected to shock waves occur uniformly throughout. A substantial decrease in particle sizes for high pulse durations is attributed to more time allowed for microcracks to grow and coalesce, forming individual particles.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on blasting methods that reduce highwall overbreak and the associated rockfall hazards. This paper presents the results of a series of tests to improve presplitting at a western surface coal mine. Reductions in overbreak were achieved by decoupling and/or repositioning the main explosive charge in the 10-5/8 inch presplit blastholes that formed the highwall. Blast designs are presented by the authors for 1) repositioning the explosive charge from a weak rock layer to a stronger rock layer, 2) decoupling with cardboard tubes in the toe region, and 3) suspending bagged powder at intervals along the length of the blasthole. About the same total quantity of explosives was used in all three test designs. It was readily apparent from periodic visual examination and photographic surveys of the highwalls that the amount of rockfall was reduced, and with a longer delay before rockfalls began, in all test areas.

Nitro-glycerine is produced by the action of nitric and sulphuric acids on glycerine, and is a heavy liquid of oily appearance, of specific gravity about 1•6, varying from colourless when quite pure to a yellow or brownish yellow. It is of a very sweet taste, and without odour, and is an active poison. Mere handling of it will in most persons induce sickness and headache. It explodes when heated to about 360° F. or from shock, but in small quantities it ignites and burns with some difficulty by the mere contact of flame.

Hong Kong is ranked as the world’s third most important international financial hub and attracts significant growth and development annually. The city is also known as the world's most vertical city, the most common view from your window in Hong Kong city centre is probably the window of another 30 storey skyscraper. The increasing demand for real estate in this bustling Metropolis has placed immense pressures on its transportation infrastructure because whilst the construction continuously grows upward with larger and larger skyscrapers, it leaves the transportation planners with very little choice but to go underground. As a first world city, interrupting daily business operations is simply not an option; however, of even greater concern is the safety of these 8 million residents. Blasting Regulations are under the strict control of the Mines Division showing zero tolerance to the breaching of safety standards. The Ho Man Tin Station (HOM) excavation, a part of the Kwun Tong Line Extension (KTE) project situated in Hong Kong began in June 2012 and is one such project that is under strict regulations from the Mines Division. The HOM project is a cross cut interchange station between the Kwun Tong Line Extension (KTE) and Shatin Central Link (SCL).

[Executive Director’s note: According to 17th edition of the ISEE Blasters Handbook in its section on trench blasting, “...consideration must be given to the proper venting of gases generated from the blasting. Should those gases spread laterally rather than vent directly to the surface, the gases may travel underground and finally vent well outside of the planned area. Such events may be caused by the strata, soil conditions or root systems, or existing and/or abandoned utilities or other man-made structures. In the worst situation, gases resulting from the detonation such as CO2, CO, and/or NOx may travel through the strata and find their way into basements of nearby homes or businesses. The IME has recommendations on how to minimize this potential problem. Some of the points include removing the overburden and digging the rock immediately after the shot, and drilling vent holes periodically between the ditch and adjacent homes.” The Board of Directors of the International Society of Explosives Engineers has expressed its concern that blasters be made aware of the issue of migration of carbon monoxide resulting from blasting operations. This paper presents an investigation about how the motions of blast induced vibration waves were affected by the presence of the fault planes. This study was carried out at Espey Open- Pit Boron (Colemanite) Mine in Turkey. Within the scope of the study, ground vibration components were measured for 8 shots using 9 vibration monitors, considering the direction of the fault. Measurement stations were located around the fault line that intersects the open-pit mine in the north-south direction and on different benches along the fault plane. Then, the data of the vibration components obtained from the 77 recorded events were analyzed and the results were presented.

This paper details the investigation of a fatal explosion that occurred on April 8, 2011 at a magazine used to store fireworks in Waikele, HI. The fireworks had been confiscated by the Bureau of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement after they were informed that a container shipped to the United States contained illegal fireworks. Four groups of cardboard cartons that were marked as 1.4G (consumer fireworks) were determined to be consistent with the more explosive 1.3G type, commercial display fireworks. The subcontractor retained to destroy these fireworks stored the shipment in the subject magazine and was in the process of disassembling them on the day the explosion occurred.

Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its importance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes.

Comparison tests were performed on 6 emulsion concentrates, 3 microballoon sensitized emulsion concentrates, and 2 water gel concentrates from 8 different sources with ANFO used as a control standard. Variables measured include density, detonation, velocity, detonation pressure, calculated borehole pressure, viscosity, and lead cylinder deformation for blends of 15%, 30%, and 45% concentrate and AN/ANFO blends. Comparative results are presented for detonation velocity vs. deformation, and percentage of inherent air vs. deformation for these blends. It was hoped that these tests would serve as a tool to facilitate the comparison of different manufacturer's concentrates in AN/ANFO blends for equivalent performance characteristics and to help evaluate these products on an equal basis for bid solicitation purposes.
