The well-established on-line particle size analyzer OPUS manufactured by Sympatec GmbH, has been successfully implemented in several mining and industrial minerals project. OPUS monitors the particle size distribution in 31 fractions as well as the solid concentration in opaque and highly concentrated ore and mineral slurries on-line in real time e.g. behind mills or cyclones applying 31 ultrasonic frequencies for highest resolution. Ultrasonic extinction overcomes all limitations known from optical and mechanical systems like contamination, blockage and wear. OPUS measures slurries in their original state without any dilution, hence no extensive sampling procedure or sample conditioning is required thus no dilution errors occur. Due to the OPUS design and suitable algorithms entrained air bubbles do not affect the quality of analysis at all. The sensor covers particle size distributions from 0,01 to 3.000,00 µm and solid concentrations up to 70 % by volume and can be easily adapted to a number of production lines simultaneously. Jiangxi Copper?s Dexing Mine is one of the biggest copper mines in Asia and among the first users for OPUS on-line particle size and concentration analysis in mining industry. OPUS is connected to 2 process lines. Jiangxi Copper has implemented OPUS for into their central control system for the grinding & classifying circuit of one SAG mill and one ball mill. Purified Na-montmorillonite samples were used as the starting materials to prepare organically modified montmorillonites (OM), and a series of OM samples were prepared by intercalation of al-kyl quaternary ammoniums with different alkyl chain length. The interlayer spacing (d001) of the OM was determined by small angle X-ray diffraction and its gelating performance was characterized by measuring the viscosity of OM/dimethylbenzene mixture. The effects of alkyl chain length, dosage of alkyl ammonium, intercalation duration and layer charge of the starting material on the OM structure and gelating properties were investigated. According to the results, the adsorption quantity of the alkyl ammonium is dependent on the hydrocarbon chain length, the dosage of the alkyl ammonium and the retention time. The adsorption quantity of the alkyl ammonium increases with the chain length and the dosage, and extra adsorption more than the CEC of the montmorillonite sample was observed under the dosages of more than 1.3 CEC. The interlayer spacing (d001) of the OM shows a dynamic variation with the dosage and the retention time, and super interlayer spacings greater than the length of the alkyl ammonium were observed under larger dosages and shorter retention times. However, the gelating performance of OM does not follow the variations of the adsorption quantity of alkyl ammonium, an optimum viscosity value of OM/ dimethylbenzene gel was observed with the moderate adsorption of the alkyl ammoniums. Furthermore, the layer charge plays an important role on the gelating performance of OM. The OM synthesized by the starting material with lower layer charge shows better gelating performance in the dimethylbenzene solution.

In the present work, we report a novel microstructure of synthesized scalenohedral PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) without any additives by a simple and ecofriendly carbonation process carried out in a liquid-gas system on the crystal growth of the scalenohedral calcite phase. Especially, the process parameters of Ca(OH)2 concentration and CO2 flow rates were investigated to enhance the sensitivity of the process. The highest average length of the scalenohedral calcite was obtained at pH 6.0, temperature 450C, Ca(OH)2 concentration 0.2M, CO2 flow rate 80mL/min, and total volume 1L. The utilization of flue gas-derived CO2 from coal fired power plants could be a form of carbon capture and storage using carbonation reaction with scalenohedral PCC. Finally, the synthesized scalenohedral PCC was used as a filer for ONP recycling. We demonstrated all these experiemnts at semi pilot plant scale.

The beneficiation test on low grade phosphate ore from a state of Russia is carried out. The rougher-cleaner ? re-cleaner system is used in the flotation process, The fineness of grind is 39.07% minus 200 mesh. The result indicates that concentrate containing 31.25% P2O5 can be obtained from the flotation feed assaying 6.18% P2O5, with 93.54% P2O5 recovery. The test result is also a guideline for further development of some currently operated phosphate beneficiation plants.

The complex ore deposit containing fluorite, barite and bastnaesite minerals is located in Beylikova Region of Sivrihisar town of Eskisehir Province of Turkey. The ore contains 40.80% CaF2; 35.35% BaSO4; 2.01%Ce; 1.5% La; 0.39% Nd and 0.1% Th. Barite recovery from this ore by flotation of the HCl leached tailings is presented in this paper. Rare earths are recovered by leaching. The leached residue (tailings) containing fluorite and barite is subjected to froth flotation to recover barite. The effect of pH and collector concentration on the flotation of barite have been studied in this work.

This paper presents an arcuate magnetic separator to remove the grinding ball fragment directly from the mill discharge, which will cause wear to downstream processing equipment such as pump, hydro cyclones and pebble crusher. Furth more this type separator was applied in Wushan mine under China National Group Corporation in China. After months of operation, the equipment has been a success. The ore studied occurred in the Three Rivers area in China and was a silver-lead-zinc complex ore containing 400.52 g/t silver, 4.77 % lead and 3.47 % zinc. Silver, lead and zinc were the major valuable elements in the ore and copper, cadmium and tin were the associated elements to be comprehensively recovered, whereas arsenic was the harmful element. The element silver occurred mainly in freibergite with small proportion in dyscrasite and other silver minerals. The carrier minerals for silver were mainly galena and oxidized lead minerals and then sphalerite, arsenopyrite and pyrite. The ore contained numerous minerals with complex mosaic texture and the lead and zinc minerals enclosed each other multiply, which made the separation of the minerals in the ore very difficult. Experimental investigation on the beneficiation of the ore indicated that with flotation separation process it was very hard to obtain single lead concentrate or single zinc concentrate that would meet the requirement of market. In the meantime, during the separation process of lead and zinc, silver tended to be dispersed, resulting in a low recovery of silver. Therefore, a rational utilization technique for the ore should be a combined process of bulk flotation to reduce arsenic? sulphating roasting of silver-lead-zinc bulk concentrate-leaching with diluted sulphuric acid to separate silver, lead and zinc. With this process quality lead concentrate containing silver and high grade zinc product and silver product could be obtained. The recovery of silver, lead and zinc in flotation was 85.10%, 84.48% and 82.48%, respectively. The total recovery of silver, lead and zinc in chemical processing was 97.07%(sum of recovery of silver ingot and lead concentrate), 99.61% and 90.93%, respectively.

Cyanide is reactive to copper minerals and is not suitable to extract the gold from the copper bearing ores. Ammoniacal thiosulfate is considered an excellent alternative lixiviant for leaching copper bearing gold ores. Unfortunately the results of high reagent consumption and poor gold ex-traction were found by thiosulfate leaching of synthetic gold ores containing chalcopyrite, chalcocite or bornite and a mild refractory copper-bearing sulfidic gold ore. In this investigation, several processes have been applied to reduce the impacts of these minerals on gold leaching. The process included: the pre-oxidation of copper sulphide minerals in water or ammonia solution, the reduction of dissolved oxygen in the lixiviant (0.3 ppm DO or 0.7% oxygen), adding phosphate anion in the leach or pre-leach stage, and the addition of a strong copper ligand (e.g., EDA and DETA). The results indicated that the gold extraction could be improved to 93% with the thiosulfate consumption being reduced to less than 8 kg/t. The dissolution of copper minerals was found to be the major reason for increased consumption of thiosulfate and the highly reductive leached surfaces are responsible for the reduced gold extractions.

"Present paper deals with the investigation of a Hungarian pumice. Grinding experiments were carried out in a stirred media mill for various residence time. Ground samples were tested with laser particle size analyzer to determine and calculate the material fineness (particle size distribution and specific surface area). The lime adsorption capacity was measured to monitor the reactivity. Alkali activated cement paste was prepared using ground pumice with various alkali activators. Cube shaped specimens were produced from the paste and the uniaxial compressive strength was measured at the age of 7 days. The resulted alkali activated material structure was investigated by XRD and FTIR. The results of the experiments show that pumice fineness has strong impact on its hydraulic activity, hence on the compressive strength and the structure of the resulted binder. Relationships between grinding fineness, material structure and strength of the raw and mechanical activated material as well as the alkali activated cement were revealed. INTRODUCTION Pumice is a natural pozzolan which can be used as raw material for cementitious materials in limited portion owing to its low reactivity. Furthermore, due to its mineralogical composition it can be used for developing a new environmental friendly binder, namely alkali activated cements (AAC) which are inorganic alumina-silicate materials with good cementitious properties (Almalkawi et al., 2017; Özodabas and Yilmaz, 2013; Najimi et al. 2018; Yadollahi et al., 2015). Despite being a rather recent research topic, many papers and books have been published focusing on various aspects of alkali activation. There is great variety of raw materials that can be utilized for AAC production. However, primary raw materials are very expensive and secondary materials are heterogenous in composition. Therefore, a more homogeneous and low price silicate would help to balance the properties and cost of resulting cement and easing the way for commercialization of AAC. However, the control of its reactivity is of great importance which can be realized using mechanical activation by grinding (Juhász and Opoczky, 1990; Djobo et al., 2016; Mádai et al., 2015). The goal of present paper is to investigate the effect of mechanical activation of pumice on the properties of the resulted alkali activated cement."

Among all gravity concentration methods, Shaking-table is the most effective one from the metallurgical point of view. In this study, Shaking-table was used for concentrating a manganese ore sample from Ghasem Abad area in Kerman, Iran. Experiments were designed by using L8Taguchi design with five variables and each variable in two levels. The influence of each variable and their interactions on the operation of the device was studied. The variables under investigation were: table slope, table frequency, water flowrate, feed rate, and particle size. The manganese concentrate grade and recovery were used as response variables. It was shown that water flowrate, table slope, feed rate, and particle size are the significant variable on concentrate grade; while, all the variables influence manganese recovery.

Slags usually contain some quantity of valuable metals. They are actually a secondary resource of metals, rather than an end-waste and have been utilized as a resource material in many areas. In addition, for some applications, slags have comparable or even better properties than their competitors. Leaching is a method for extraction of metals from copper slags. The extraction of metals such as copper and cobalt from the copper slag of Küre-Turkey, was investigated in the past decades. Fayalitic type of these copper slags containing 0.934 % Cu, 0.353 % Co and 50.91% Fe were subjected to the experimental study. As a result of mineralogical analysis of the slag sample, fayalitic type of slag was found to contain hercynite, magnetite, hematite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, covellite, bornite and metallic copper. Direct acid leaching methods were applied on the sample. Effects of leaching time, temperature and acid concentration on Cu and Co leaching recoveries were investigated in the direct acid leaching. The optimum leaching conditions were found as leaching time of 2 hours, solid/liquid ratio of 1/3, H2SO4 concentration of 125 g/L and temperature of 70 °C. At these conditions, 75.5 % of Cu, 95.6 % of Co and 70.9 % Fe were extracted. In the second stage of the leaching experiments, copper in the pregnant solution was precipitated by cementation to produce a Cu concentrate assaying 95.58 % Cu; cobalt was obtained by precipitation with H2S to produce a concentrate containing 62.10 % Co. As a result of this study a process flow sheet has been developed for recovering Cu and Co from these slags to demonstrate its economic and technological benefits.

In this paper, the recovery of copper minerals and molybdenite in the rougher/scavenger banks of two separate mineral processing plants is compared with recovery in laboratory (batch) cells. A number of metallurgical surveys were conducted in two plants treating porphyry copper and molyb-denum ore. Batch flotation tests were performed on plant conditioned flotation feed slurry, in parallel with the plant metallurgical surveys. The effect of flotation feed density on recovery of copper minerals and molybdenite in the plant and batch laboratory cells was investigated. Changes in flotation pulp density had little effect on copper mineral recovery, in both plant and laboratory cells. The ultimate recovery for molybdenite, on the contrary, increased considerably when the pulp density was reduced, both at plant and laboratory scale. Recovery of copper minerals in the plant and laboratory cells was comparable, while molybdenite recovery in laboratory flotation cells was 3%~13% higher than in plant. It is hypothesised that the flotation rate of molybdenite is sensitive to cell hydrodynamic conditions (i.e. local turbulent energy dissipation) more than the flotation rate of copper. The flotation behaviour of molybdenite particles is likely to be predominantly controlled by bubble-particle collision frequency, which is enhanced in high local turbulent energy dissipation environment. For chalcopyrite, the flotation recovery is mostly determined by attachment and stability efficiencies. An increase in local turbulent energy dissipation, while increasing collision efficiency, may negatively impact on attachment and stability efficiencies. The outcomes may have a considerable impact on increasing molybdenite recovery from porphyry ores.

The new method of evaluation of grindability of hard coal and its blend is shown. Standard Hardgrove test is used as a base to work out this method. The essence of this method consists of simulation of milling process in close circuit (mill-classifier) and determination of energy consumption and quantity of product under the constant feed flow. The research equipment designed specially for this project is described New method of grindability measuring completes standard Hardgrove method withdrawing its faults: ? bigger (c.a. 10 times) and more representative sample is used; ? the milling process is carried out in close circuit (similarly to the industrial condition); ? energy consumption of the milling process is determined for three samples, which differs in grain size. The new method of evaluation of grindability of hard coal and its blend is shown. Standard Hardgrove test is used as a base to work out this method. This method allows us to determine energy consumption of the milling process. The essence of this method consist of simulation of milling process in close circuit (mill-classifier) and determination of energy consumption and quantity of product under the constant feed flow. Our results will complete the Hardgrove method and will help us to better characterise coal. At the same time investigations in industrial scale are carried out. These investigations will verify this new method. Also a new mathematical model of the milling process is being elaborated. It will be used to predict behaviour of coals in industrial conditions.

The process under investigation is the large-scale production of phosphorus. Gravity delivers the feed, consisting of pelletised apatite, coke and silica (in the form of gravel), to a submerged arc furnace through ten, evenly distributed feed chutes ensuring constant packed bed volume. Within this packed bed, solid-gas reactions are dominant in generating the gaseous product. These reactions, as well as the packed bed itself, were the main focus in the development of a fully three-dimensional CFD model in which fluid flow and energy distribution are represented as functions of chemical reactions, heating and melting of material and heat losses. The associated complex process interactions necessitated the creation of two process-specific, user-developed models that integrates accurate, thermodynamical data with computational fluid dynamics calculations, as well as reaction kinetics. The boundary conditions are provided by industrial measurements, and the key model parameters of reaction kinetics were obtained by laboratory experiments for different feed mixtures. Thirteen temperature probes installed inside the refractory lining of the furnace especially for this project allowed parameter fitting and validation to be guided within the constraints of real measurements. Simulation results reveal a thin, dome-shaped, reductive zone where conditions are optimum for maximum phosphorus recovery, as well as evidence of a thermal reserve zone similar to an ironmaking blast furnace located above this reduction zone. When compared to actual operating data, the CFD model can successfully predict the specific power consumption, the phosphorus in the slag and gaseous product flowrate under given operating conditions. This CFD model forms part of a larger project that aims to create a Dynamic-CFD hybrid control model.

This paper presents gold occurrence investigations on the altered rock gold deposit from Jiaodong area of China, and comparisons of gold occurrence in the ore samples from different mining levels. According to the results, the chemical and mineral compositions of raw materials from different mining levels are quite similar. However, the relative content and grain size of gold minerals are quite different between the two mining levels of -130m~-340m and -550m~-650m. In the ore of upper mining levels of -130m~-340m, electrum is the dominant gold mineral and accounts for about 80% of the total gold minerals, while native gold is minor and accounts for about 20%. As for the ore of deep mining levels of -550m~-650m, the major gold mineral shifts to native gold which accounts for 67%, while the ratio of electrum drops to about 33%. Coarser gold grain size was observed in the upper mining level ore with a mean size of 33.05µm while the gold grain size was much finer in the ore of deep mining levels with a mean size of 22.85µm. Furthermore, the gold mineral associations also show different patterns between the upper mining level samples and the deep mining level samples. Of the three observed gold association types such as inclusion gold, fissure gold and interparticle gold, more inclusion gold was found in the ore of deep mining levels. The inclusion gold accounts for 62% in the ore of deep mining levels, while that in the ore of upper mining levels accounts for about 56%. Further study revealed that the dominant gold associated minerals are pyrite and sulphides and only a small amount of gold is associated with quartz and silicates. It was shown that the altered rock gold ore from Jiaodong area can be regarded as a free milling gold ore, but the processing parameters should be optimized for the ores in different mining levels according to the different gold occurrence. In addition, it was predicted that enhanced gold liberation is necessary for the ore in deep mining levels.

In order to raise the utilization rate of phosphate resource of Al-Jalamid Mine in Saudi Arabia, a flotation experiment for its phosphate rock was carried out by using WF-01collector that have been produced by Wengfu Phosphate Mine. The results showed that WF-01 collector had extensive adaptability for Al-Jalamid phosphate rock, and the grade of phosphate concentrate could be up to 33% P2O5 mixing the upper, middle and lower beds rock as well as its 80% more recovery.

"Coal-fired electrical power generation plants produce 56% of all the electricity in the U.S., burning approximately 860 million tons of coal annually. This results in the production of 58 million tons of fly-ash; 19 million tons of bottom ash and boiler slag, and 23 million tons of desulfurization sludge.s annually. These are a considerable disposal problem, and it would therefore be very valuable to be able to sell these residues and by-products as useful materials, rather than paying to dispose of them in landfills. However, utilization rates are currently very low, below 32% even for the most thoroughly commercialized combustion byproduct (fly-ash). This poor utilization rate is a result of the high impurity content of combustion byproducts, which makes them unsuitable for existing markets.Mineral processing techniques are useful for upgrading and utilizing combustion by-products. Fly-ash can be processed to remove unburned carbon, or utilized as a binder component in ore pelletization and agglomeration processes; bottom ash can be processed to produce certain aggregate grades; CO2 emissions can be sequestered using modified leaching techniques; and many scrubber sludge’s require processing before they can be used for producing gypsum products.The experiments described in this paper were carried out to study the application of mineral processing techniques to upgrading combustion by-products, particularly flue-gas scrubber sludge. A process was developed for upgrading unoxidized Flue-Gas Desulfurization (FGD) sludge’s by removing the primary impurity (unreacted limestone). A combination of hydrocycloning followed by froth flotation reduced the limestone concentration to as little as 1.7%, while recovering 66% of the sludge weight as a clean product. The recovered limestone was sufficiently concentrated that it could be recycled to the scrubber for more complete utilization."

A preliminary attempt has been made to study the particle size distribution (PSD) of minerals in one of the industrially important pulverized Indian coal sample using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM). The results show that clay minerals, quartz, pyrite, and pyrrhotite form the bulk of the mineral matter. Minor minerals, such as calcite, dolomite, ankerite, barite, oxidized pyrrhotite, and gypsum are also observed in the coal sample. The PSD of the included minerals is generally observed to be finer than that of the excluded ones in the coal. Thus, the coal rich in included minerals has more small mineral particles, which may affect its reactivity. The proportion of included to excluded is found to be higher in major cases. Si is found to be mostly occurred as quartz and clay minerals, while Al mostly occurs as silicate minerals. Fe is primarily present as iron sulfides, iron oxide, and Fe-Al-silicate. S is partitioned into iron sulfides and gypsum. Most Ca occurs as carbonates and gypsum, with a minor fraction associated with clay minerals. Mg is found to be mainly present as dolomite and clay minerals, with a very minor fraction present as ankerite. The majority of alkali elements are associated with aluminosilicates. P is mostly associated with kaolinite and/or present as more complex compounds containing Al, Si, and other elements as apatite are found to be absent in the coal studied. "Historically the focus at the mineral processing sites has been to improve the production operations, while little focus has been set on how factors, such as the quality of water used in the process affects the metal recovery. Simultaneously increasing public pressure and water scarcity is driving the mining industry to recycle more water back to the process, which in turn leads to accumulation of impurities within the recycled water. This paper presents a concept for a systematic approach on targeting the impurities that have a negative effect on the metal recovery at the flotation circuit by using a novel solution called Process Water Recycling Plant (PWRP). These plants are designed with specific ore type in mind. PWRP produces cost-effectively process water to different target qualities, especially for flotation purposes enabling higher and more stable flotation recovery. It consists of pre-designed and standard water treatment units for a wide range of volumes. The application-specific configuration of units is governed by the water quality requirements, and can be designed according to specific customer needs. Testing has been carried out in order to investigate, which recycling water impurities affect the different ore types and how the metal recovery in flotation is affected as a consequence of the poor-quality water. The results indicate that every ore type is impacted differently and without a good understanding on how the water quality impacts the process performance, adverse effects on the flotation recovery can occur.INTRODUCTION With a focus on where water is used within the mineral processing, it has become evident that even though water is used in several different processes, majority of the water losses within the site occur at the tailings processing and the tailings storage facility. New tailings management technologies that can increase the recovery of water are actively being developed, but the key to improving the efficiency of water use and reducing the operational risks lies in closing the water loops and increasing the slurry density in the tailings processing. With this shift from conventional tailings technologies towards paste and dry stacking, water efficiency is vastly improved, but it might in turn lead to process water challenges with impurities, reagents and fines being recycled and accumulated within the production processes."

Micro-fine disseminated molybdenite was ground in a laboratory stirred mill using steel media and zirconium media respectively. The floatability of ground molybdenite and slurry chemistry was investigated. It was found that the total recovery of ground molybdenite using zirconium media was higher while the pH and Eh of the slurry are lower than that using steel media. When steel media was used, iron oxy-hydroxides had been generated coated on the surface of molybdenite, and decreased the floatability of molybdenite, especially of the -10µm particles. The iron and lead oxy-hydroxides was generated by the reaction between steel media with pyrite and galena associated with molybdenite. It was also found that changing the grinding media to inert can benefit the flotation of molybdenite.
