IT SEEMS particularly appropriate that, in celebrating its Diamond Anniversary, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metalturgy chose our Province of British Columbia as its locale in this, our own Centennial year. I am sure your organization is justifiably proud of its achievements and growth over the period of its sixty years, and we, for our part, are justifiably proud of our growth over our first one hundred years. With your kind indulgence I pro-pose to talk to you today about our industrial growth, or, to put it an-other way, to highlight, historically, our progress in industrial development over the past one hundred years, and to take the liberty of speculating on what we may reasonably look forward to over the next few years. I am sure, Mr. Chairman, that some may have questioned the appropriateness of a talk on the industrial development of British Columbia to the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. However, strangely enough, we in British Columbia owe our origin, constitution-ally and industrially, to the mining industry.

"Permanent magnets have been applied extensively to several electronic products such as printers, TV sets, microphones, microcomputers and headphones, presently manufactured in large scale by industrial economies. Sm-Co alloys represent about 20% of the world market for permanent magnets and their industrial processors generate 20-30% of magnetic scraps which can be recycled. This paper discusses a process route to recycle SmCo5 using acid treatment, solvent extraction of Sm and electrowinning of Co. The results confirm the feasibility of the alternative proposed. Basic operational variables are suggested as guidelines to design a plant for recycling magnetic scraps.The use of hydrometallurgical processes to recycle scraps from the industry of permanent magnets has been suggested in some recent papers related to recycling of metallic alloys [ 1 ]. These research efforts might be understood as a worldwide tendency towards the development of self sustainable metallurgical processes which mean the reduction of environmental impacts.CETEM -Center for Mineral Technology leads in Brazil several research programs concerning recycling and treatment of industrial residues. The work on samarium purification and concentration by solvent extraction, producing also a solution of cobalt sulfate as partially reported here is one of these programs. Previous results related to the sulfuric acid digestion of SmCo5 are presented somewhere else [2]"

Rapid drifting enables quicker access to orebodies, higher production rates and a resultant reduction in production cost. The Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation (MIRARCO) funded by the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization (CAMIRO) has developed a methodology for safe rapid drift development within the underground metalliferrous mining industry in Canada According to industry survey, about 36% of drift development cycle time is spent on support installation. MIRARCO has developed a methodology for safe rapid drift development based on minimizing time spent on support installation. The methodology includes a critical review of the rockmass classification systems, examination of current support practices in the mining industry and civil tunneling, review of rapid drift development practice in South Africa, introduction of risk hazard procedures to account for material property variability and the development of a WIZARD as a quick decision-making tool for the implementation of the procedures. A comprehensive field data collection procedure was put in place and data collected from various mines to verify and calibrate the support selection rationale. The findings of the research programme resulted in the development of an improved rockmass classification system and showed that construction effects have drastic influence on support levels but is often not accounted for in assessing support levels. Stress effects and structurally controlled failures are the other important factors to take into account in rapid drift development. Three support classes were established for safe rapid drift development as No Systematic Support, Light Support and Strong Support. The support levels took into account cost, rate of installation and safety based on compatibility with ground characteristics. This paper describes the methodology for safe rapid drifting within the underground metalliferrous mining industry in Canada and highlights the key issues and major drivers behind their continued development at the Geomechanics Research Centre within MIRARCO.

"Industrial-grade limestone is found in both the Lower Silurian La Vieille Formation and Upper Silurian LaPlante Formation of the Chaleurs Group in northern New Brunswick. Currently, between 150 000 and 200 000 tonnes of limestone are produced per year from the proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation at the Sormany quarry of Elmtree Resources Ltd., located west of Bathurst.The proximal facies of the LaPlante Formation was deposited on the margins of tectonically uplifted Ordovician terranes. This facies comprises stromatoporoidal-algal bindstone intercalated with wackestone, packstone, and floatstone in variable proportions. The distal facies comprises calcareous shale and minor limestone deposited deeper offshore.Folding and faulting related to Middle Devonian Acadian tectonism have caused an increase in the apparent thickness of the limestone sequences, especially adjacent to the regional Rocky Brook-Millstream fault. Structural and stratigraphic observations indicate that some of the limestone bodies in the area have been tectonically displaced from their site of deposition.A variety of prospecting techniques was used to locate new limestone resources, including geological mapping, airborne and ground electromagnetic surveys, and satellite remote sensing. Clastic rock units above and below the LaPlante Formation have distinctive properties that help to trace the intervening limestone along strike. Because of water-saturated glacial cover, thick vegetation, and the small size of targets, airborne geophysical methods did not prove effective in delineating limestone beds, but aeromagnetic surveys helped map the underlying clastic unit. The remote-sensing data and especially high-resolution digital elevation models helped in identification of karst topography related to limestone."

"The flowsheet for the Voisey’s Bay mill had to meet the challenge of processing an ore containing high pentlandite and chalcopyrite values in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. In the 1994-97 period, circuit development focused on making a high-grade copper concentrate and a relatively low-grade nickel concentrate. However, in 1998 a circuit with copper concentrate, high-grade nickel concentrate and a Ni/Cu middlings concentrate was specified. Following a three year project delay, work resumed on the flowsheet in 2001, and the target for the overall grade of the nickel concentrate was raised from 14% to 20% nickel. To achieve this target triethylamine tetramine (TETA) and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in an all lime circuit. It later became evident that, with appropriate selection of collector and adjustment of the circuit by the addition of a scavenger on the scavenger cleaner, it would be possible to approach the grade of concentrate required without the use of pyrrhotite depressants. The recycle of water and the contained thiosalts was also proven to be instrumental in raising the grade.Construction and commissioning of the mill were fast-tracked with start-up of the mill in September 2005 some six months ahead of the original schedule. Ramp-up of both throughput and metallurgy was faster than any other recent nickel installations with tonnage being limited mainly by concentrate dewatering due to the higher than initially planned ore grades.INTRODUCTIONNickel was discovered in the vicinity of Voisey’s Bay by Chislett and Verbiski working for Diamond Field Resources in 1993 and the Ovoid deposit was delineated in the winter of 1994/95. By the end of 1995 the Ovoid had been well explored and at that time was thought to have a reserve of at least 30 million tonnes with an average grade of 2.83% Ni and 2.0% Cu. Drilling to the east of the Ovoid had indicated the presence of significant mineralization. In June of 1995, Inco Limited bought a 25% share in the Voisey’s Bay Nickel Company (VBNC) which was a subsidiary holding company set up by Diamond Fields. Inco also bought 8% of Diamond Fields and negotiated the right to sell all the nickel produced from VBNC for twenty years as part of this agreement. In April 1996, Inco bought the 75% of VBNC shares that it did not own."

"IntroductionThe Beaverlodge Operation of Eldorado Nuclear Limited is a uranium property located near the north shore of Lake Athabasca about 7 miles from Uranium City, Saskatchewan.The mill is a 2000 tpd carbonate leach operation producing a high grade yellowcake concentrate.The Lamella Thickener was purchased to replace a 55 foot conventional unit which had deteriorated beyond repair. The cost of the unit was considerably lower than for a conventional unit, installation was much simpler and the unit is much more compact allowing it to be installed in the mill basement and be insulated completely.The unit was sized according to the results of tests performed both by the supplier and Beaverlodge engineering staff. The supplier guaranteed overflow clarities of less than 100 ppm suspended solids. The Lamella thickener was developed by A. Johnson Co. of Stockholm, Sweden, is manufactured under license by Parkson Corporation of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and is distributed in Canada by A. Johnson Co. of Montreal."

"I note that many of you are involved in the production of zinc, lead and copper concentrates and metal, which I am the most familiar with among the non-ferrous metals. This afternoon, I will describe briefly the responsibilities of a commercial manager within a mining/metallurgical company, the basic framework of a non-ferrous metals concentrate agreement and lastly, a brief discussion of the copper, zinc and lead concentrate and metal markets.I hope this talk will contribute to a better understanding of the business between all of us and look forward to a discussion after the presentation.First of all, I work for Noranda Sales, which is the marketing and sales agent for Noranda Minerals' three operating units: Noranda Copper, Noranda Zinc and Mining Corporation. In addition, Noranda Sales acts for other mining companies in the marketing of their raw materials and metals. Noranda Sales is responsible for procuring all raw materials for Noranda's metallurgical plants, such as the Copper Group's Forne and Gaspe smelters, as well as the sale of surplus concentrates and by-products and metal products. In addition, Noranda Sales trades metals and concentrates and owns a metal brokerage business, Rudolf Wolff, a founding member of the London Metal Exchange. "Many power-based grinding models exist, and most operators are familiar with Fred Bond's ""third theory"". Bond's model is most commonly used to describe primary and secondary grinding to product sizes above, for example, 100 µm. Operators sometimes use Bond's equation to describe grinding in situations where it is not appropriate, such as fine grinding below 50 µm. Using an alternative model would be a better choice in this situation.Bond's equation is one in a large family of models. Related equations better suited to fine grinding include the “signature plot”, Von Rittinger's model and Charles' equation. These models have a similar form to Bond's and can be fit to industrial regrind mills and laboratory tests using the simple regression tools in the charts of computer spreadsheets. Operators will find that fine grinding calculations are both easier and more accurate when using the alternative equations to fit their regrind milling surveys or when performing laboratory regrind mill scale-up for plant design.None of these models are new: Charles' equation was published in 1957 and Von Rittinger's model was proposed in 1867. A quick refresh how to apply these equations can turn these oddities from the undergraduate curriculum into useful tools for plant optimization. They can be fit to any type of mill including stirred and tumbling ball mills.IntroductionBuilding a case for fine grind modelling requires reviewing some theory before building a framework for doing fine grinding calculations. The actual calculation procedure recommended is easy and can be applied by plant metallurgists. Don’t be frightened by the theory; the end result is reasonably simple.The observation that mineral breakage is related to the absorption of energy is usually attributed to Von Rittinger (1867). Lynch and Rowland (2005) describe that the ability to empirical test and calibrate energy models of breakage didn’t exist until the widespread adoption of electric motors in the mining industry during the 1930’s and 1949’s. A series of technical papers published by the Allis Chalmers company during the 1940’s demonstrate that they were attempting to do such a calibration using Von Rittinger’s model which is usually stated as: “the energy consumed in the size reduction is proportional to the area of new surface produced.”"

"This paper examines the change in surface properties of the Polyurea used on spirals at different operational times: unused spiral, 28 months in operation and 58 months in operation. This is being done to investigate the alleged statement that spirals have a decrease in spiral separation efficiency after a certain period of operational time. Observing the surface characteristics under 1.5x and 36x magnification it can be concluded that the surface roughness decreases with increased operational time. This may be explained by a decrease in air inclusions and streak lines as the spiral surface wears. Decreased surface roughness should in theory have a beneficial effect on spiral separation performance. This leads to the conclusion that if a decrease in spiral separation performance is observed after a certain period of operation, it can’t be attributed to the change in surface properties. Uneven wear of the spiral surface, material creep or application of force to the spiral will change the profile of the spiral and could cause an adverse effect on spiral separation performance. The metallurgical test work showed that the best results are obtained at 30 - 35% solids by mass in the spiral feed. The iron recovery was significantly higher in the new spiral in comparison to the 2012 and 2010 spirals. The mass yield to concentrate in the new spiral was approximately three times more than for the older spirals. In conclusion, the yield combined with the grade, which equals the recovery was the best for the new spiral.IntroductionAn investigation was launched to research the common belief that spirals experience a decrease in efficiency, and therefore recovery, after a certain period of operation (a period of seven years has been used in the industry). This paper on coarse particle recovery (CPR) summarizes a process to capture coarse particles that are not recoverable by regular flotation. Several porphyry copper operations in the world operate analogous circuits that recover non-floated copper from tailings; however, the case presented here is unique in that extensive underlying test work has allowed the authors to elucidate some fundamental principles behind recovery enhancement. This paper discusses an overview of the flowsheet that is proposed to Minera Escondida Ltda., the nature of copper in the feed to the CPR circuit, and the various unit operations within the recovery circuit.

"In salt and potash mines, the time-dependent deformation mechanism should be clearly understood based on in situ measurements to predict the performance of a mining design. In this study, in situ deformation measurements from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and other salt and potash mines were used to determine the transition time from the primary to the secondary creep stage and to investigate the influence of adjacent excavations such as a nearby tunnel excavation, panel excavation and/or pillar extraction on rock deformation. IntroductionThe deformational behaviour of underground excavations in salt and potash mines is complex due to the time-dependency of the rocks. When the material properties are determined from laboratory tests, they should be carefully applied to in situ conditions, because in situ conditions are completely different from laboratory conditions. For instance, in situ deformation measurements show that the deformation rate decreases with time similar to those observed in the laboratory during the early stages. However, the rapid decrease of deformation rate does not come from the microscopic strain hardening effect observed in laboratory tests, but mainly from stress relief around the opening after its excavation (Baar, 1977). It is, therefore, recommended to undertake in situ measurements and use them to understand the deformation mechanism.Even though in situ measurements are widely accepted as important information for understanding the deformation mechanism of salt and potash (Barr, 1971; Kovari and Amstad, 1993), not many publications have focused on the fundamentals of data measurement, the application of the measured data, and the development of data analysis techniques. Recently, several new techniques for better understanding the deformation mechanism of rock salt have been developed that are based on in situ measurements. Kwon and Miller (1995) developed a new technique for describing the actual deformational behaviour of an underground excavation in rock salt. The migration of “zero strain boundary,” which represents a no movement boundary around an underground excavation, could be calculated by the technique developed by Kwon and Miller (1996). Kwon and Wilson (1997, 1998) applied neural network techniques to in situ deformation measurements to predict the deformational behaviour of the underground excavations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) located in the United States.In this study, in situ deformation measurementsfrom the WIPP site and other salt and potash mines in the United States were extensively analyzed to understand the deformation mechanism of the underground excavations in the rock mass."

In July 2012, Hatch Ltd. and Air Products & Chemicals Inc. completed construction and commissioning of a 4000 tpd O2 cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) for Barrick Gold’s Pueblo Viejo Project located in central Dominican Republic. The ASU produces high pressure gaseous oxygen, which is used for the oxidation of refractory sulphide ore within the pressure oxidation (POX) circuit. As a result of the project’s remote location and tropical climate, many challenges were faced over the course of construction, commissioning and start-up of the ASU. These challenges included adequate preservation of equipment due to dusty and humid site conditions, final assembly and erection of the cryogenic distillation columns on site, limited spare parts inventory/availability, and an unfinished power source for plant commissioning. This paper discusses the steps taken by Hatch and Air Products to successfully design, construct, commission and start up the largest stand-alone ASU plant for a POX application in the metallurgical industry.

"During the early development of the Mattabi Mine in 1970, discussions with the Ontario Government revealed their policy of prohibiting, as much as possible, the development of new, isolated, single-industry townsites. Subsequently, Mattabi located its first housing in the Township of Ignace, which is situated 50 miles from the site of the mine and plant. Over 200 employees now commute 100 miles daily to and from work.This paper describes the experience gained and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a remote townsite."

"A number of technologies are in practice for selectively removing coarse gold from conventional grinding circuits. These circuits are often designed so that the grinding mill output is size classified, with large (or high density) particles being removed before the tails are returned to the mill. Because of the high relative SG of gold, and the fact that some forms of gold such as free gold do not break apart during conventional grinding, coarse gold can accumulate in the circulating load, and eventually be lost.Eriez has developed a flotation cell that uses fluidized water to enhance flotation of coarse particles. More than 40 units have been sold in industrial minerals, and we are now exploring applications for the HydroFloat® in the gold industry.Mineros S.A currently produces approximately 120,000 oz of gold per year by gravity concentrating alluvial gold ore with a mean particle size of 330 microns, followed by further concentration using a Falcon separator. A 400 mm diameter pilot-scale HydroFloat® was added to the tails of the Falcon to test whether additional gold could be captured. Enrichments of 50-600 times and recoveries normally in excess of 95% were achieved. This allowed direct smelting of the gold concentrate. Metallurgical results and operating parameters such as water addition and power will be discussed during the presentation.This result opens the possibility that the HydroFloat® could be used directly in the grinding circuit, for removing coarse gold in the circulating load. This work also shows the possibility that the HydroFloat® can produce a throwaway tail, which will reduce the size of the circulating load stream and the grinding requirements of the circuit."

Selection of a suitable site for a metallurgical plant is crucial for the success of the business case. For a brownfield project, with the decision to locate the project on a site with existing production facilities and activities, the selection of the site has been made. For a greenfield project, important economic and logistical considerations include proximity to primary and secondary resources and/or to the market, infrastructure, and access to energy and water. National and regional aspects, including the social license to operate, can be decisive in final site selection. Key to recruiting and retaining a labour force are proximity to urban areas, along with weather and health conditions at the site. Risk factors include site geotechnical parameters and topography, contamination, as well as probability and types of potential natural disasters.

This paper briefly describes the characteristics and induced factors of coal mining bumps based on the investigation of recent bumps accidents occurred in China. According to the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamic and dissipate structure, the process of strain energy accumulation and dissipation in the ?Coal-Surrounding Rock? system (CSRS) is discussed during the preparation of coal bumps. In addition, a series of experiments are conducted to analyze the relationship between bump-prone property and micro-structural characteristics of coal. The process of coal bumps induced by propagation of fractures and deterioration of coal mass properties are also analyzed systematically.

"Uranium is a unique commodity. It is both a metal and a fuel, It has both commercial and military uses. It yields ""clean energy "" but presents environmental concerns. All of these factors have an impact on the commerce of uranium.Being a metal, uranium is extracted from ore like many other metallic minerals. As a fuel, it is subject to the vagaries of energy commodity market forces. The history of uranium in the first nuclear weapons has led to nation al governments carefully controlling production and sale of uranium. The spectre of radioactive contamination of the environment adds further to the public concern over the disposal of low-level radioactive wastes from uranium processing and use.There have been a number of excellent reviews on the commercial aspects of the uranium industry. In this discussion, these aspects will be briefly summarized to provide a general picture of the strengths of the Canadian uranium industry and the pressures to which it is being subjected currently. The principal thrust of this paper will be to outline Canada's resource strength and to identify some factors which will affect Canada's ability to continue holding a sizeable share of the world uranium market."

The shortage of freshwater has been a major challenge for mineral flotation in arid areas. When using high salinity water, certain electrolytes are detrimental to flotation while others can improve the flotability of minerals. In this paper, the flotation behaviors and contact angles of pyrite in both Milli-Q water and high salinity water were investigated using different collectors at various pH levels. Results show that the thionocarbamate has a less affinity to pyrite in different solutions under mildly alkaline conditions as compared with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and N-isopropoxypropyl-N’-ethoxycarbonyl thiourea (iPOPECTU). At high pH levels, the slime coating on pyrite surfaces, which is caused by colloidal precipitates of magnesium and calcium ions in seawater, was confirmed by SEM, EDX and in-situ zeta potential measurement. The slime coating of colloidal precipitates on mineral surfaces led to low recovery of pyrite at high pH levels. The study of flotation behavior of pyrite in high salinity water improves our fundamental understanding of mineral flotation in seawater.

"The mining market is researching innovative methods to train the workforce for mining which is normally extremely difficult to get. Thus, the dynamic simulation-based technologies become an essential pillar to educate and train the inexperienced staff at the pace required by this industry. Even if Operator Training Simulator (OTS) systems are commonly used in most of industries, knowledge transmitted to operators are unfortunately not ""capitalized"" in general. The OTS systems are usually delivered as a single hardware and software platform and very little as a full service long-term.In this article, an integrated solution to increase the efficiency of the operators is proposed. This solution is based on the combination of dynamic simulation, processes knowledge, virtual reality and the knowledge capitalization through the creation of simulation scenarios and e-learning. The Codelco Ministro Hales plant simulation project for a copper concentrator plant is presented as a real life example.IntroductionDynamic and real-time process simulation have proven to be a must in the development of greenfield projects, providing mechanisms to design and test controls design, interlocks, start-up, shut down sequences and operator training, among others (see (McMillan, 2006) for further details). Early adopters of this technology were utility power plants; in the petrochemical industry have become a standard, and in the mining industry the use of dynamic simulations is growing, especially in new projects and training of operations personnel for the adoption of best practices and new technologies, see (Nikkhah & Anderson, 2001) and (Toro, Ortiz, & Yutronic, 2012).This paper outlines a solution that utilizes dynamic simulations as the base of an integrated platform for operational effectiveness, which takes into account the current scenario of new mining projects and operations, where high turn over rates and needs of specialized workforce have given a special value to this kind of technologies."
