In the Hydrometallurgical processes, the presence of the so-called “crud” is a constant challenge in solvent extraction. Crud is a stable emulsion which forms along the interface between the aqueous and organic phase. The spread is influenced by the following parameters: first, wind blows the dust and impurities into the open sedimentation tanks. Second, the undissolved solids such as sand transported in the PLS causing problems in conjunction with incorrect agitator design. The crud fraction can decisively impact the efficiency of the hydrometallurgical extraction because the phase interface can constitute a large fraction and the sedimentation tanks cannot react flexibly to it. In the downstream process of the seriesconnected sedimentation tanks, they are thus all contaminated with crud. At the same time, the necessary mass transport is significantly impeded at the phase boundary between organic phase and aqueous phase due to the crud formation. The transfer of the organic phase into the electrolysis cell can result in a “burnout” of the cathode. The carry-over of this electrolyte into the extraction can cause problems with the pH regulation. The carry-over of the organic components into the raffinate also leads to contamination of the leaching circuit. The continuous treatment of the crud with a 3-phase decanter centrifuge is extremely effective in combating this problem. This technology splits all three phases from each other and they are consequently continuously separated. All subsequent process steps exhibit a stable, uniform effectiveness. The main advantage for the customer is that fluctuations in the process are eliminated and the organic phase can be recirculated back to the extraction. The recycling of the solvent alone justifies the investment in less than 6 months as examples from South Africa and Chile show. To operate solvent recovery in daily operation fully automated online at the optimum limit, the decanter centrifuge is equipped with a concentration-dependent pond adjustment called DControl®. By this means, we can guarantee our customers the maximum possible solvent recovery and minimise the solvent costs in this process step. This system is presented in detail in this paper.

The solubilities and distributions of molybdenum and iridium in iron silicate slag and copper-iron mattes were studied using an equilibration-quenching technique and subsequent direct phase composition analyses by EPMA (Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis) and LA-ICP-MS (Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry). The equilibrations were carried out on a wide matte grade interval, ranging from 55 wt-% Cu to 75 wt-% Cu, in pSO2 = 0.1 atm at 1300°C. The results in equilibrium with a solid iridium-molybdenum alloy indicated an iridium solubility of 150–500 ppmw in the sulphide matte, depending on the matte grade, and a molybdenum solubility of 100–600 ppmw. Iridium was distributing predominantly in the sulphide matte with the distribution coefficient of 10+3 - +4 but molybdenum deported predominantly in the slag with Lm/s(Mo) = 0.02–0.1. The effects of alumina and lime additions in the smelting slag were also examined. INTRODUCTION Iridium is a highly siderophile element (HSE), which means that it is incompatible with the sulphide forming elements and possesses a small solubility in mattes, such as copper- and nickel-iron sulphide melts. Molybdenum behaves only modestly in that way (Walker & Li, 2008; Righter et al., 2017). They both are known to be trace elements accompanying copper and nickel sulphide ores. No solubility data, however, are available for them in copper-rich sulphide mattes. Geochemical data on the behaviour of Ir and Mo deal mostly with low-iron silicate systems, e.g. basaltic melts, and high-sulphur sulphide solutions and mattes (Ertel et al., 2008; Fonseca et al., 2007). They also indicate that Ir and Mo dissolve in silicate melts primarily as oxides and not as electrically neutral metal species. Most geological data of iridium focus on high-sulphur systems of the monosulphide composition and typically Fe-Ni mattes where copper is a trace element (Fleet et al., 1996; Sattari et al., 2002). Direct solubility measurements for mattes and iron-lean silicates have also been made using pure Ir or an Ir alloy as the saturation phase (Borisov & Palme, 2000; O’Neill & Eggins, 2002; Makovicky & Karup-Møller, 1999; Ertel et al., 2008; Mungall & Brenan, 2014). A recent summary about the solubilities of HSE’s in iron- and sulphur free silicates is available in Laurenz (2012). The thermodynamics of molybdenum partitioning between oxides and Fe-S-O melts was studied by Mengason et al. (2011). Their results indicate strong accumulation in the iron-rich sulphide in reducing conditions (pO2 = 10-9.6 atm in Ni-NiO equilibrium at 1050°C). Molybdenum dissolves in iron-lean silicate melts as MoO3 species in oxygen pressures above the Fe-FeO equilibrium and as MoO2 in more reducing conditions (Farges et al., 2006; Righter et al., 2017).

"The development of computer process control at the Lake Dufault concentrator is reviewed and the on-stream X-ray analysis -computer system is described briefly. Some applications of the computer in metallurgical process control are described.The computer sequences slurry sample streams to the analyzer and translates the analytical results from voltage signals to elemental percentages. The required flotation reagent flow rates are calculated from analyses and mill-feed tonnage rates and the reagent feeders are set automatically to provide such flow rates. X-ray calibration time has been reduced from about 45 minutes to 15 minutes by the use of a computer program. Metallurgical and operating personnel have acquired the ability to program the computer and have extended the system capability to allow the calculation of recoveries, averaging of mill data, application of ore specific gravity in grinding control, control of oxidized ore flotation and the development of an economic recovery program."

Investigations into the effect of a variety of acid digestions on common rock-forming minerals demonstrated a considerable variation in the proportion of the total metal extracted. A similar situation applies to the analysis of a number of common rock types. In addition, grain-size variation has an effect on the amount extracted by certain digestions. This work indicates that considerable care needs to be given to selecting an appropriate acid digestion capable of determining metal held in particular components of a sample. By using partial extraction techniques, the identification of certain patterns of metal distribution, undetectable by normal methods involving total metal analysis, may be achieved.

"This paper refers to the wet open circuit ball mil ls in operation at Sidbec-Normines'5 pelletizing plant at Port-Cartier, Quebec, which commenced operations in late November· 1977. Prior to detailing our experiences in the grinding area at Port-Cartier, a general description of the total Sidbec-Normines project is outlined.HI STORYSidbec-Normines was incorporated in 1976 to develop the Fire-Lake - Port-Cartier iron ore mining, concentrating and pelletizing project. The primary objective of Sidbec-Normines is to produce 6mi11 ion tons per year of oxide pellets, of which 3 mi 11 ion tons per year are of a low silica grade suitable for direct reduction purposes. The participants in the project are Sidbec, the Quebec Government steel producer, British Steel Corporation (lnt'l) and the Quebec Cartier Mining Company. Equity interest is held in the company by the participants in the proportions of 50.1%, 41.6:7% and 8.23%, respectively."

Abstract -A thin layer of stratiform Ni-Zn-PGE sulfide mineralization of sedimentary-diagenetic origin was deposited during the Middle to Upper Devonian in the euxinic "Nick basin". The mineralized unit (2:3 cm thick), which seems to have been developed over the entire sedimentary basin of >80 km2, consists of pyrite, vaesite (NiSi), and sphalerite. The average grade of the mineralization is about 5.3% Ni, 0.73% Zn, ?770 ppb (PGE+Au), and up to 61 ppm Re. Anomalous Se, As, Mo, P, Ba and U are present. A minimum of 0.90 x 106 tonnes of Ni were deposited in the basin (based on a bed thickness of 3 cm) during the Devonian. The unique metal association, extensive lateral distribution, persistent metal grade, mineralogical makeup, and stratigraphic control demonstrate that this is a new deposit type and a new geological environment for Ni and PGE +Au. The sulfide layer occurs at the base of a Phosphatic Chert Member which is underlain by a distinctive marker unit consisting of concretionary limestone structures. The limestone spheroids may represent a vent-specific carbonate facies developed adjacent to faults that emanated nutrient­ rich hydrothermal discharges just prior to the main mineralizing event. The suite of elements associated with the Nick mineralization suggests that the ore-forming metals were originally bound to organic matter derived from decaying marine organisms. Discharge of hot brines bearing organic­ matter-bound metals took place along numerous conduits within basin faults that are now manifest as bitumen veins. Our syndiagenetic model proposes that these fluids were discharged laterally from the conduits into the unconsolidated bottom sediment (ooze). The introduction of this metalliferous fluid, rich in organic matter, stimulated biological activity and bacterial reduction of its contained S04 to sulfide. Hot, dense, laterally migrating hydrothermal fluid precipitated thin sulfide-rich 1arninae within bottom sediment. Published thermodynamic studies suggest that the diagnostic vaesite­ pyrite assemblage crystallized at approximately 138°C. The ?34:S values range from -14.7 o/oo to-10.0 o/oo and are up to 34 o/00 lighter than locally surrounding sulfides and age-equivalent mineralized strata elsewhere in the Selwyn Basin. The ?13:C values of calcite in the footwall of the mineralized unit ( -12 o/00 to -6 o/00) are isotopically much lighter than regional values. The lighter isotopic character is attributed to the hydrothermal discharge of fluids enriched in organic compounds. Although geochemical profiles of the lower Earn Group sediments that host the Nick mineralization reveal that these black shales are not distinctive, the unusual Ni, Zn, PGE, U, Ba, and P elemental associations and their anomalous concentrations in stream sediments can be used to explore for this deposit type.

"Under certain conditions useful gravity information of a reconnaissance nature can be obtained with-out measuring elevations by spirit level surveys on the ground. Gravity surveys can become part of a practical exploration program where high cost and slow progress previously hindered their utility. The advantages of the new elevation procedures are realized mainly in remote areas, in areas where ground transportation is slow and difficult and on surveys where the station spacing is large in comparison with the distance of the average optimum level shot. To utilize the advantages, transportation by helicopter or light plane is usually necessary. Methods of obtaining elevation control without leveling include: barometric altimeter survey; photogram-metric -APR spot determinations; methods involving the measurement of gravity gradients. The accuracies of these methods have been tested and compared with the normal accuracy of level surveys. It is felt that each method has its place in reconnaissance gravity work, particularly in the open areas of Northern Canada."

"A technique for on-line simultaneous estimation of gas and solids holdup (volume fraction), based on a combination of conductivity and pressure difference measurements, is proposed and tested in a laboratory flotation column (10cm in diameter and 447cm in height). Fundamental concepts underlying this technique and the effect of relevant parameters are discussed. In the studied range, 3-30 %v/v gas holdup and 2-18 % v/v solids holdup, experimental results showed good agreement between the estimated and actual holdup values (as determined by an isolating technique). The relative accuracy of the solids holdup estimation increased when solids density or solids concentration increased. Frequent re-calibration of pressure transducers was found necessary for accurate phase holdup estimation.IntroductionGas holdup is a key parameter in controlling the performance of flotation columns. For example, flotation rate is affected by bubble size and gas rate both of which, in turn, affect gas holdup. Moreover, gas holdup also determines the slurry residence time which indicates a direct influence of gas holdup on recovery.Gas holdup determination has been the focus of many studies (e.g., Castillejos, 1986; Marchese et al., 1992). Some of the techniques which have been used are given in Table 1."

The Codelco Norte Smelter process 2,500 tpd of arsenic-bearing concentrates with an arsenic content of up to 1.5% in one of its two main smelting units, the Teniente Converter. The product, 1,100 tpd high-grade matte or white metal, is traditionally fed to the PS converters, while the 1,700 tpd of slag is fed to the slag cleaning electric furnace for copper recovery. This is achieved in a very reductive environment which reduces the viscosity of the slag and enhances the sedimentation of the high-grade matte droplets. The behavior of arsenic in this non-oxidative environment was studied at lab-scale and fundamental thermodynamic data were obtained. Based on these data a thermodynamicbase model to assess the arsenic behavior in reductive environment was developed. It is based on a mass balance for the reduction and sedimentation stages performed in an electric furnace which allows the recovery of high-grade matte droplets after decreasing the viscosity of the slag. This model can be a very suitable tool for predicting fractional distribution of arsenic in the slag cleaning electric furnace, when the distribution ratio, vapor saturation degree, temperature, y As and pO2 are given.

THE GECO OREBODY, located north of lake Superior in the Thunder Bay district of northern' Ontario, was discovered in 1953. Diamond drilling in the following year indicated a 15,000,000-ton ore-body, and production plans were made for the shipment of copper and zinc concentrates in three years. To accomplish this, the Geco Project was initiated. The property was in an undevdoped, inaccessible area, and the project involved the conversion and extension of a logging road to the property, the construction of two railways and seventy miles of hydro transmission line, the erection of a municipality, the building of a plant, and the development of an underground mine to produce 3,300 tons per day. This paper describes some of the methods used in the underground development phase of the Geco Project.

"Some non-flotation chemicals are added to flotation circuits directly and indirectly to control issues such as scaling and dust in other areas of the operations. Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. "Modelling and optimization techniques used in the operation of the Detour Lake Mine leach circuit are contrasted to a 1973 review of contemporary techniques used by a major gold producer. The leach circuit at the Detour Lake Mine was modelled using a full factorial Design of Experiment of stirred tank reactor leach tests using circuit feed. Contour plots of extraction were applied in the plant to optimize addition rates of cyanide and the newly-commissioned lead nitrate system. Contour plot sections were used to understand the impact of sulphur in circuit feed at different operating dissolved oxygen concentrations. The 1973 review paper offers insight into industrially-applied modelling and optimization techniques. In particular, a mathematical model of plant data was developed using multilinear stepwise regression analysis. The model was presented using graphical representations available at the time and applied to optimize the rates of cyanide addition. Off-the-shelf software solutions of today allow mineral processors to quickly and easily visualize data, allowing them to re-allocate time and resources spent processing data to generating raw data and extracting actionable information.IntroductionModelling and optimization in mineral processing is the art of reducing reality through judicious use of assumptions to understand a process and leverage this knowledge to engineer practical solutions to metallurgical problems. Data analysis is at the core of this enterprise.While this paper showcases the modelling work done at the Detour Lake Mine (DLM), the primary objective is to pause and reflect on how far the field has progressed since the 1970’s. A snapshot of state-of-the-art gold cyanidation modelling at that time is a review paper of the Anglo American Group’s capabilities (Brittan & van Vuuren, 1973). The objective of this paper is not a play-by-play of the evolution of modelling and optimization since that time. Rather, it is a comparison of the field at two points in time.In 2016, DLM undertook an extensive bench-scale leach circuit modelling program to better understand the impact of cyanide, dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate, grind size, density, and pH on gold cyanidation (Fournier, 2016). Two major capital expenditure projects were anticipated for 2017: improvements to oxygen control and a lead nitrate distribution system. While the lead nitrate system was planned for construction, the design parameters had not yet been selected. Following the development of the model, plant trials were executed to validate aspects of the model and the methodology was expanded to address other plant issues, in particular the effect of talc chlorite and pyrrhotite in leach feed.The variables of the bench-scale study are summarized in Table 1. Dependent variables were varied using a full factorial design of experiment with two repetitions for each test condition, yielding a total of 300 tests. Test order was randomized to eliminate bias from independent variables."

This paper reviews the coal mining operations of The Canmore Mines, Limited, at Canmore, Alberta, paying particular attention to the use of this coal by the metallurgical and chemical industries. The characteristics of the deposits are outlined, and the mining and processing methods used are discussed. Introduction M INING in the Cascade coal area of Alberta began form-ally in 1886 when the Canadian Anthracite Coal Company was granted its charter. Earlier operations had been confined to prospecting and family-type enterprises serving the market area within barging distance on the Bow river. From 1886 to 1964, seven mines were opened between Banff and Ribbon Creek; six of these have since been abandoned, leaving the B c 0 L. original tenant, under the name of The Canmore Mines, Limited, as the sole survivor. The town of Canmore, hub of the mining ventures, is located on the main line of the C.P.R. and on the Trans-Canada Highway, 67 rail miles west of Calgary and 57 4 miles east of Vancouver, as shown in Figure 1.

The Cargill deposit, located 32 km south west of Kapuskasing, Ontario, was discovered by International Minerals and Chemical Corporation in 1975 and has been evaluated through an extensive program of drilling, chemical analyses, metallurgical tests and engineering and economic studies. The Cargill alkalic complex, comprising mainly carbonatite and pyroxenite-amphibolite rocks, was intruded into the rift system of the Kapuskasing magnetic-gravity high. Weathering and leaching under assumed temperate to cool climatic conditions plus faulting, shearing and/ or initial petrographic variations within the carbonatite developed a small, locally confined karst system. This resulted in a thick enriched leached carbonatite zone capped by troughs and sinks, and filled with a residuum of apatite, goethite, clay and other minerals. Residuum thickness ranges from nonexistent on ridges to 170 m in troughs and sinks. Apatite values are 5 to 15% in fresh carbonatite, 20 to 40% in leached carbonatite and 20 to 98% in residuum. A tentative open-pit mine designed for preliminary feasibility studies is estimated to contain 62.5 million tonnes averaging 19.6% P20 5.

A series of flocculation tests were performed on dilute quartz suspensions with the use of five polyacrylamide-based flocculants of similar molecular weights but of different degrees of anionicity. The tests were performed as a function of ionic strength and pH. The macromolecular conformation of flocculants in solution was assessed through intrinsic viscosity measurements under the same physicochemical conditions as those of the flocculation tests. It was generally found that the flocculating efficiency of the polyacrylamides correlated with their ability to coil or stretch in solution. Polyacrylamides with the degrees of anionicity on the order of 10-18% showed the highest flocculating efficiency in terms of the settling rates of the flocculated solids and the residual turbidity of the resulting supernatant. At the same time, these most effective flocculants were also found to exhibit the greatest tendency to coil and stretch in solution. This result suggests that the flocculating power of a flocculant is determined not only by its ability to adsorb onto (and bridge) fine particles but also on its ability to conform to the size of the resulting floes.

Abstract - During geostatistical estimation of block grades, the kriging process produces a measure of error, the kriging variance or the kriging standard deviation. Estimation of the block error depends on the semi-variogram model for a deposit, which reflects fundamental characteristics of a deposit such as (1) nugget effect, (2) range of influence of grades, (3) different local spreads of data as a function of average grade (proportional effect), (4) nested structures, and (5) underlying anisotropies in the data; this model may be affected by sampling or assaying limitations, however. Because the kriging error incorporates so many features of both the deposit and data to be used for estimation, it may offer a substantial improvement on block classification over traditional procedures such as data density. Practice indicates that the relative kriging standard deviation (RKSD) is particularly useful for block classification in measured, indicated and inferred categories. Plots of RKSD in plan and section also can be used to demonstrate where extra drilling and sampling would be most advantageous for upgrading the class of some blocks. Moreover, the use of grade and RKSD filters can show where material near cut-off grade is poorly defined, indicating sampling target areas to improve block classification in the vicinity of the ore-waste boundary.

"The adoption of tailored-rolled or tailor-welded blanks (i.e. TRB/TWB) in the automotive industry has been known to offer great potential for the optimization of weight, function, cost and complexity. Vehicle light weighting can further be achieved by using high strength aluminum alloys like the 7xxx-series. 7xxx-series alloys are capable of delivering specific strengths equal to or greater than high strength steels. However, room temperature formability of this aluminum class is limited, so one approach to forming 7xxx-series alloys is by hot stamping. Hot stamping utilizes an elevated temperature blank and the high pressure stamping contact of the forming die to simultaneously quench and form the sheet. This paper explores the initial feasibility of tailored thickness material for body-in-white applications when processed under hot stamping conditions.INTRODUCTION Steel tailor-rolled blanks (TRB) or tailor-welded blanks (TWB) have been used within the automotive industry as a method of reducing weight, expanding material utilization, and decreasing overall part/assembly cost (Ganeasan et al., 2015; Merklein et al., 2014; Hirt et al., 2005; Kridli et al., 2000). The production of such tailored thickness materials has resulted in over $2.5 billion (2016) in combined industry sales (Mubea, 2018). As automakers begin to adopt the manufacturing practices traditionally reserved for steel such as tailor rolling/welding with greater enthusiasm for vehicle light weighting, there exist an opportunity to expand the material database to extend beyond the traditional aluminum alloys found in current production. High strength aluminum alloys, i.e. 7xxx-series, are ideal for structural automotive applications due to their high specific strength; however, they have limited room temperature formability. Hot stamping, another manufacturing practice used by the steel industry, can be used to form these high strength materials. The combination of tailoring the thickness of a sheet material and hot stamping provides an opportunity for significant weight saving within an existing manufacturing footprint. This paper explores the potential and challenges of this approach when applied to structural body-in-white components. The methods for tailor rolling, tailor welding and hot stamping are described and applied to the production of a 7075 aluminum alloy B-pillar. The results are discussed in terms of feasibility and weight savings."

Foreword The complete history and early development of the Sullivan mine was fully covered in a paper entitled 'The Development of the Sullivan Mine and Processes for the Treatment of its Ores', prepared by the staff of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, and presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division of the Institute at Trail in October, 1924. At a subsequent meeting at Blairmore, Mr. E. G. Montgomery read a paper on the mine, and in 1926 Mr. M. M. O'Brien brought the subject up to date at the joint meeting of the American and Canadian Institutes at Cranbrook. The present paper is necessarily based largely on these earlier accounts. Discovery and Early Development The outcrop was discovered in 1892 and the property was bonded and later sold to the Sullivan Group Mining Company, of Spokane. From 1896 to 1899, surface stripping and test pits (at A) around the outcrop exposed a vien of sulphides with varying amounts of lead and zinc. In some places, a 35 per cent lead ore carrying 15 ounces of silver was found. These lenses were of commercial value. With the completion of the Kimberley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, in 1900, some systematic development was started. A shaft l00 feet in depth was sunk (at B). Shaft-house, boiler-room, and compressor-plant were erected, and a steam diamond-drill was put into operation.

"Introductory and GeneralTHE Northwest Territories comprise all that region -of Canada lying between Yukon Territory and Hudson bay and north of the 60th parallel of latitude. For purposes of mine .administration the Territories are divided into three districts: Yellowknife, McKenzie, and Arctic and Hudson Bay. Mining recording offices for the respective districts are maintained at Yellowknife, Fort Smith, and Ottawa. The mine inspection for the entire area, and also for Yukon Territory, comes under the Federal Department of Resources and Development. Two mining inspectors are responsible for these inspections: the Chief Inspector of Mines, with headquarters in Ottawa, who makes trips into the north at least twice a year, and a Resident Inspector, stationed in Yellowknife.The Resident Inspector is constantly making inspections of active properties. "High temperature and humidity at the working negatively affect safety and health in deep and hot underground mines. It is necessary to predict during design the dynamic changes in temperature with heat and moisture emitted into the mine ventilation-thermal-humidity (VTH) system from various sources such as auto-compression, wall of strata, mining equipment and workers. Currently available mine ventilation and climate models are either furnished with a simplified, step-change-type (SCT) model for thermal solver (such as in Climsim, VnetPC, Minevent, MFire, etc), or with more advanced models to account for the “thermal history effect” (also known as thermal flywheel effect), such as in Ventsim and MULTIFLUX. The goal is to quantify the modelling error caused by the lack of variable thermal history component in the SCT model. Two models are compared: one with and one without the thermal history component in long, single airway examples with long-term climate simulations for 20 years assuming an input air temperature with daily variation. The examples illustrate the magnitude and the time-lag phase of the variation of the modelling errors with space, time and model conditions. Large errors are shown in the order of +14°C and –7°C errors, persistent for long time periods, up to 20 days in one example.INTRODUCTIONIt is important to predict the heat and humidity distributions during the design of hot and humid underground mines for the safety and health of the workers. The feasibility of extracting a rich deposit in great depth may depend on the extent of ventilation and mine climatization for maintaining an acceptable working environment. The cost of ventilation and cooling may be substantial, up to 40–50% of the total energy cost of mining (Clausen, 2017). The accuracy of model solution is important in view of the low profit margin in mine feasibility for deep and hot mines. Safety and health of the miners, the primary concerns, are therefore inherently connected to finding ever better solutions in simulation methods and ventilation control techniques."
