"Research and development on the production of liquid fuels from coal is rapidly expanding worldwide. AImost every industrialized country is engaged in coal liquefaction research and process development. In Canada, the federal government, through CANMET, is actively supporting coal liquefaction research and development in a number of areas.A review of the basic principles and some of the processes in the production of liquid fuels from coal is presented with reference to the characteristics of the Canadian coal resource base. An overview of the CANMET coal liquefaction contract program is presented and specific results from the batch autoclave studies carried out with Saskatchewan lignite and Nova Scotia high-volatile bituminous coals are discussed. The development of a laboratory-scale continuous-flow coal liquefaction unit at the Energy Research Laboratories of CANMET to investigate the co-processing of coal and bitumen/heavy oil is also described.IntroductionThe CANMET coal liquefaction program is made up of two interrelated parts. The first part consists of the research and development work being carried out at the Energy Research Laboratories near Ottawa, Ontario. The second focuses on contracted research and development as part of the Coal Conversion Program of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada. The long-term objective of the liquefaction program is to contribute to Canadian liquid fuels production through the definition, research, development and demonstration of different coal liquefaction technologies for the Canadian marketplace.In coal liquefaction, the main objective is to produce liquid hydrocarbons with a higher hydrogen-to-carbon (HIC) ratio than the coal feedstock while reducing heteroatom (S,O,N) content, removing mineral matter and minimizing gas production. Typical atomic HIC ratios for a variety of Canadian fossil fuels are shown in Figure I. Canadian coals have about 500/0 of the HIC ratio present in tar sand bitumens and heavy oils and only about 20% of the ratio available in methane. In general, the cost of synthetic fuels production is related to the cost of hydrogen and, therefore, to the increase of HIC ratio between feedstock and products. On this basis, the production of liquid fuels from coal would be expected to be more costly than liquid fuels produced from bitumens and heavy oils. However, for mined tar sands and some heavy oils this difference tends to be offset by the large sand content (>90 mass %) of tar sand bitumens and the increased production costs of viscous heavy oils. For example, it can easily be shown that for equal weights of distillate <525°C) yield, current coal liquefaction processes required between two and three times less mined coal by weight than the mined tar sand s required for the most technically advanced processes proposed for bitumen upgrading."

The commercial carbonate industry of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, began about eighty years ago with the opening of the Sydney steel plant. Significant carbonate deposits are confined to the Precambrian George River Grav" and the Mississippian Windsor Group. George River Group carbonates are thought to have formed as part of a stable platformal sequence. They are crystalline and lie within a dominantly quartzitic sequence. Of the four major sites for George River carbonates on the island, the most commercially promising are the dolomite at Kelly Cove and the limestone and dolomite at Glencoe. Kelly Cove dolomite has good potential for metallurgical, agricultural and fettling purposes; reserves approach 13.6 million tonnes. Windsor Group carbonates were deposited as marine sediments in basins formed by pre-Carboniferous fault blocks. Windsor dolomite reserves at Stoney Creek are only fractionally retrievable and hence are of little economic value. The Windsor Group's Irish Cove limestone has been quarried on a large scale since 1964; no undeveloped commercial deposits, however, remain in the group.

"The Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located at 4200 m elevation in the Chilean Andes. The deposit is a world-class supergene enriched porphyry with a mining reserve of 89 Mt of 1.3% copper. The supergene zone will produce 6.3 Mt of ore per year for more than 15 years to produce 75 000 t of cathode copper per year.This paper will review the project geology the computer model ling of the deposit, the mine planning process and the property production scheduling. With copper production .fixed by the onsite electrowinning capacity, the planning and scheduling aspects to optimize the project NPV will be discussed. Some of the logistics, equipment. personnel and process difficulties of operating a mine at 42()() m elevation will also be described. IntroductionProject DescriptionThe Quebrada Blanca Copper Mine is an open pit copper project located in the northern part of the Chilean Andes. The project is based on the supergene enriched portion of a porphyry deposit which has a mining reserve of 89 million tonnes at 1.3070 copper. Below the enrichment blanket, the protore represents a further resource.All ore will be leached, the higher grade material will be crushed and stacked for thin layer heap leaching, and the lower grade and oxide material will be dump leached as run-of-mine material. Solvent extraction and electrowinning will be used to produce 75 000 tonnes of cathode copper per year. Power will be supplied by a 40 MW on-site diesel generating plant with the waste heat being used for process heating. The leaching operation will operate in excess of 15 years and may be followed by open pit mining and conventional ore concentration of the underlying primary sulphide mineralization.Because of the dry location water will be piped 37 km from a ground water source at the Salar de Michincha. Water requirements will be approximately 1.5 million m3/year. The operation will eventually employ approximately 550 people on a 7-day-on, 7-day-off rotation with two twelve-hour shifts per day with an on-site camp. Busing will be provided to the port city of Iquique."

Reduction in fleet size through use of modern technology requires higher utilization and greater availability.Caterpillar&apos;s maintenance control system program will display the capabilities of computer technology in a maintenance environment. Utilizing such resources will provide increased availability, lower inventory requirements, fewer last minute disasters, and lower cost per ton for maintenance. High production from premium quality equipment can only be realized by good planning and care, executed by maintenance and operating personnel acting cooperatively.IntroductionAccurate information is the key to accurate decision making. In today&apos; s competitive industry, mines&apos; teeter on the brink between profit and loss. Their survival will be predicated on their ability to retrieve, analyze, and formulate accurate information regarding the operating costs of mobile equipment. This paper deals with the impact of managing equipment operating costs and introduces a computerized control system designed for monitoring and controlling these costs.Caterpillar has produced several computerized modelling programs designed at taking the guesswork out of equipment selection and management. The most basic of these is Equipment Investment Analysis (E.LA.). This model compares two or more alternatives over the projected life of the machine. It deals with comparisons in the owning and operating costs of equipment, as well as, their productivity over a specified period of time.In order for a computer model to be credible as a decision making tool, it must be simple to use and the results measurable and accountable . Caterpillar has introduced several computer models to assist the industry in selecting and managing an equipment fleet. These programs allow the user to predict and monitor the operating costs and production capability of mobile equipment. They are often used in the machine selection process to select equipment which best suits a mine&apos;s long-term cost per tonne objectives. After the optimum selection is made, Caterpillar&apos;s Maintenance Control System provides an efficient management tool to monitor and verify the data used in the selection model."

The McClean Lake mill is located approximately 850 kilometers north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and is operated by Orano Canada Inc. (Orano). The mill was designed to process high grade uranium ores, and in 2014 completed a multiyear expansion to increase its production capacity to 24 Mlbs U3O8 per annum. This expansion included significant changes to the mill’s secondary leach circuit in support of safely processing high grade ore directly from the Cigar Lake mine. In particular, inter-stage pumps were introduced for slurry transfer between the secondary leach tanks, replacing the original pressure feed forward operation. The design and selection process for these pumps was strongly influenced by the uncertainty related to actual radiation dose exposure when processing undiluted high grade ore (up to 30%U), and consequently the desire to maintain minimal occupancy in the vault enclosure containing the secondary leach tanks. These constraints resulted in the decision to install positive displacement pumps above the leach tanks in a suction-lift configuration. Operating experience with this design has shown that the pump capacity is significantly de-rated due to process solution gas-entrainment and pipe scale build-up, particularly in the front end of the secondary leach circuit where reagent dosage is high. Experience processing high grade ore also provided accurate radiation dose data to demonstrate that the level of occupancy in the leaching vault enclosure could be re-evaluated to accommodate alternate pump configurations. This paper reviews the lessons learned and improvements made to safely increase the capacity and reliability of the leach inter-stage pump system.

"The Bullmoose Mine is currently under construction in the North East Coal area of British Columbia, and approximately $300 million will be spent to bring this 2.3 million-tonnes-per-year metallurgical and thermal coal mine into production by December 1, 1983.The project is an unincorporated joint venture undertaking, with Teck-Bullmoose Coal Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Teck Corporation, holding 51%, Lornex Mining Corporation holding 39%, and Nissho-Iwai (Canada) Ltd. holding 10%. Bullmoose Operating Corporation will be the manager and operator of the project.This paper will broadly cover the history and exploration work on the property, the geology, open-pit mining plans and equipment, the preparation plant flowsheet from breaker station to clean coal silo, the 35 km highway truck haul, the railroad loadout system, manpower requirements, construction progress, approvals and permits, and general financial arrangements.IntroductionThe Bullmoose Mine Project"" is located about 87 road kilometres south of Chetwynd, B.C. and consists of an open-pit coal mine, a plant facility in the Bullmoose Creek valley below the mine, and a separate rail loadout facility on the British Columbia Railway Branchline near the new town of Tumbler Ridge some 35 road km to the east.The plant will be capable of producing a total of 2.3 million tonnes per year (mty) of washed metallurgical and thermal coal. Long-term metallurgical coal contracts for high quality, medium volatile, bituminous coal have been signed with nine Japanese buyers for 1.7 mty, and the balance of 0.6 mty will be thermal coal production.Plant construction began in the spring of 1982, and in May 1983, preproduction waste and overburden removal in the mine will commence. The plant should be fully operational by December 1983, and first vessel loading at the Ridley Island port is scheduled for January 1984."

THIS BRIEF PAPER presents the information available on the use of Dorrclon?is in the middling re-grind unit at the lead-zinc mill of Canadian Exploration Limited. The plant throughput is 1,650 tons per twenty-four hours. The flotation feed is ground to 60 per ?Cent passing through 200 mesh. It contains some composite 11articles of sphalerite in calcite, and these reported either in the final zinc concentrate, thus lowering the grade, or in the tailing, with loss of zinc. The re-grind unit was set up in the zinc flotation circuit to liberate the sphalerite from these middling particles, to raise the grade of concentrate and improve recovery. Grinding through 325 mesh should give substantial liberation of locked sphalerite. The middling regrind unit consists of two Dorrdones and one ballmill arranged as shown in the -accompanying flow-sheet. The Hardinge ball-mill, size 7 ft. x 36 in., was free for this use as a result of recent plant expansion. The two Dorrclones were purchased, and the necessary pumps and pipe lines were installed to complete the regrind unit. The unit has been developed over a period of two years by several steps and various flow schemes until reaching tl1e present flow scheme. These steps are not elaborated here, because the changes were made to determine the best product to work on for flotation metallurgy, and not because of the Domrolone classifying ability.

"A key element for a successful mining operation is the grinding circuit. It must be reliable, maintainable and must perform to or above design capacities for 95% of the time. Once chosen and installed major modifications are either prohibitive or very expensive. The selection of mills and drive system is probably the single most important decision made within the concentrator complex.Economic studies revealed that the optimum expansion for Lornex was a 68070 increase in plant throughput. This indicated that the new mill would have to be larger than the existing 32-foot mills.The Lornex ore has a wide range of hardness which has a great influence on mill throughput (Table 1). To smooth out the fluctuations, a blending program ha s always been in effect at the mine, coupled with ball charge control for the primary mills. As can be appreciated, an optimum balance is difficult to achieve. A sudden change to so ft ore with a high ball charge puts the mill into jeopardy with a constant speed drive.The blending philosophy would continue after the expansion, but with the addition o f a second primary crusher, it was envisaged to have the new mill process harder ore to maintain production targets. In theory, the new mill would have a proportionally larger ball charge than the existing mills.This scheme makes the new mill vulnerable for processing so ft ore for a fixed speed mill. Thus, variable speed seemed an attractive option.In early 1979 prominent mill manufacturers were invited to submit proposals for the new mill. Fixed and variable speed mills were to be considered with mill size ranging from 32-foot to 36-foot diameter. The proposals were to include the drive, ball charge, % critical speed, couplings, gears, etc. - the complete package. The recommendations were variable with most manufacturers submitting several alternatives. Recommended mill speed varied from 68% to 78% critical. The concept of variable speed was becoming more attractive, Lornex ultimately decided on a twin DC motor drive system for a 34-foot diameter mill.After start-up it was discovered that best throughput occurred at 78% mill critical speed or top speed of the drive motors. The motor speed range was adjusted upward from 186 to 200 rpm. Today the mills operate at 79% critical or a motor speed o f 193.5 rpm.Clearly the selection of the variable speed mill allowed the flexibility to optimize throughput."

"The use of hydraulically delivered classified tailings sands to provide ground support in large mining operations is still widespread despite recent developments of alternate backfilling methods and materials. The major disadvantages of the use of hydraulic fill are the costs and risks associated with slurry delivery. The main risk is that of bulkhead failure resulting from sand liquefaction due to insufficient operational control or due to dynamic loading from earthquake or rockburst. That risk may be eliminated by the pouring of a stiff cemented sand plug in the base of each stope prior to continuous fill pouring in that stope. An additional advantage of cemented plugs is that massive bulkheads are not needed. Instead, a temporary (removable and reusable) bulkhead can be used for plug forming.Physical model studies of fill pressures on a temporary bulkhead were carried out in a 3 m radius centrifuge facility. Fill pouring in-flight was carried out in order to model prototype stress paths. The results indicate that the average bulkhead pressure is likely to be less than 10 kPa under normal operating conditions and less than 20 kPa under the poorest anticipated operating conditions which include smooth walls, high slimes content and high water-content slurries. A portable bulkhead consisting of a central core and a surrounding sealing bladder was modelled and found to be effective. The use of different sizes of cores allowed the stress distribution adjacent to these bulkheads to be evaluated."

"The Aldermac deposit and associated prospects occur in the Noranda Archean volcanic centre of the Abitibi greenstone belt. Over two million tons of are grading 1.65% copper, with minor gold and silver, were mined between 1933 and 1943. The deposit has features in common with the Vauze and Millenbach mines in the same district.Recent detailed mapping, geochemistry and petrography combined with data from former diamond drilling and mining operations permit a re-interpretation of the Aldermac area. The orebodies and spatially related sulphidic zones are con eluded to be volcanogenic.The host rocks are a chemically bimodal suite of mafic and rhyolitic flows, volcaniclastics and related subvolcanic intrusions. Massive sulphide lenses are spatially related to a quartz-feldspar- phyric rhyolite dome and siliceous, volcanic-exhalative sedimentary rocks, The succession is cut by gabbro and syenite, related to later stages of volcanism, and by post Kenoran diabase dykes. Regional metamorphism attained the low greenschist facies, but the rocks lack penetrative deformation.Hydrothermal alteration is primarily an intense silicification of mafic volcanic rock s enveloping, or lying below, sulphidic zones. Chlorite and sericite alteration zones, including dalmatianite, are more locally developed and have a closer spatial relation to mineralization, as do epidote, calcite and calcic garnet.The structure is complex and cannot be explained by isoclinals folding; rather it reflects concurrent faulting, and extrusive and intrusive activity. Fault blocks were rotated and exhibit opposed facing; the original selling was possibly a submarine graben.Sulphidic zones occur within mafic and felsic volcanic rocks and at the interface between the two; there is thus potential for discovery throughout the known stratigraphic succession. Exploration conducted according to a volcanogenic model is advisable, particularly in the light of recent discoveries in similar rocks of the Amulet area."

Glencore Nikkelverk is operating its Chlorine Leach Process in Kristiansand, Norway, producing nickel, copper and cobalt metals by electrowinning. The copper tankhouse, with an annual capacity of 40 000 tons, is based on traditional technology with copper starting sheets and cast lead anodes. Due to the integration of this copper sulphate process in a nickel chloride refinery, operating conditions are unique. In recent years, operating costs have escalated, and health, safety and environment are top priorities. Test work on a new copper process involving permanent cathodes was therefore initiated in 2007, and a pilot plant was started up in 2012. The objective was to introduce innovative technologies and tailor these to be robust in the Nikkelverk process, to form a basis for a new sustainable copper tankhouse with a high degree of automation. Key learnings from more than 10 years of R&D work is presented, focusing on cathode materials and copper metal deposition including product quality, robotic stripping, coated titanium anodes, electrode contacts and alignment, electrode current monitoring with Hatch HELM tracker technology and acid mist capture using cell hoods with off-gas scrubbing. The new copper tankhouse project was approved in December 2018, and commissioning is planned in 2022. INTRODUCTION The Kristiansand nickel refinery was started up in 1910, processing nickel-copper matte originating from Norwegian mines. It was the first industrial plant in the world to produce nickel by electrolysis using the Hybinette electrorefining process. After roasting to burn off sulphur in the matte, copper was leached and recovered as cathodes by electrowinning with lead anodes. In the first years, the copper cathodes were fire- refined and cast into ingots for sale (Thonstad Sandvik, 2004). The Nikkelverk refinery was acquired by Falconbridge Ltd. in 1929, and since then matte from Sudbury, Canada has been the main feed source. The Hybinette process was in operation until 1975 when conversion to the newly developed Chlorine Leach Process was started (Stensholt, Zachariasen, & Lund, 1986). In this process still used today, nickel and part of the copper in the matte is leached using chlorine gas generated on dimensionally stable anodes in the nickel and cobalt electrowinning tankhouses, as illustrated in Figure 1. The presence of dissolved copper ions in the strong chloride leach solution is essential for effective chlorine absorption and nickel dissolution. To improve copper-nickel separation, slurry from the atmospheric leach is pumped to autoclaves and then to cementation tanks for precipitation of copper as copper sulphide, which is collected in filter presses. The leach residue, also containing the precious metals, goes through a 3-stage wash to remove chlorides before being introduced as a slurry to fluid-bed roasters for sulphur removal. The resulting calcine is then leached in spent electrolyte from the copper electrowinning tankhouse, to dissolve most of the copper and also some nickel, cobalt and other elements. After separation of the leach residue, elements like Bi, Te, As and Ag are removed from the strong copper sulphate solution by reaction with metallic copper in three columns in series filled with cut copper cathodes. The purified solution then passes polishing filters before being mixed with spent electrolyte and returned to the electrowinning cells.

"Construction of mountain roads at north westerly Saudi Arabia is a difficult task in rugged terrains, where the rock masses are steep slopes, and full of geomorphological constraints.Werka descent lies at the north west region of Saudi Arabia. The Werka descent, constructed four years ago harmed due to rainstorm. The rock masses are metabasalt and metaryolite tuff rocks. The road is eight m-wide, surround by unsupported sharp manmade slope cuts, reaches up to 15 to 40 m height on both sides. Failures took place at both sides of the road, and blocked it. The road of almost 2 km long subjected to all modes of slope instability such as rockfalls, manmade slope failures and debris flows in the absence of the remedial measures. The very precipitous 40 m-high rock slope-cut along the road has no benches, backed by a natural slope of almost 80 m height. Both types of slopes suffer from rockfalls and slope failure’s incidents, frequently took place mainly in rainy seasons. The steep manmade rock slope cut is less than 1 m close to the road, with no ditches, form a potentially source area for rockfall’s hazards.Intensive geotechnical study includes utilization of the RMR and GSI rock masses classifications indicates that the rocks are fair to poor quality. The DIPS, RocFall, Swedge, RocTopple, RocPlane computer program, in addition to GIS and DEM image utilized to perform modeling and deterministic analysis, in order to suggest the mitigation measures for the natural and manmade slope cuts and rockfalls. The seismic coefficients of 0.1 to 0.4 taken into consideration in modeling processes. Input parameters to model the rockfalls and slope failure’s characteristics were studied such as GSI, block size; seeder points, locations of fallen blocks; slope angle, restitution coefficients, and slope roughness. The programs modeled the proposed location, height and energy of the rockfall barriers, collectors, and rock bolts. Two manmade slope cuts studied and modeled utilizing the integrated techniques were to eliminate the risk of slope failures and rockfalls through the construction of remedial measures, this is the study objectives."

Underhand cut and fill mining is being planned for selected areas at the David Bell Mine where high ground stresses have resulted in particularly challenging mining conditions. In order to test the placement and performance of a variety of underhand cut and fill paste mats three different designs have been installed and extensively instrumented along the A-Zone 9C ore sill. The sill is approximately 87m long, 4.0m high, and 5.0m average width. The sill was broken into 3 sections each of which will contain one of the sill mat designs. The underhand sill will be mined 3.75mW x 4.0mH, allowing for some overbreak while minimizing the risk of the back span exceeding the design limit of 4.0mW. Each test sill mat includes pre and post-support and includes 0.5m (18?) broken muck mat placed along the sill floor. Upon developing beneath these mats quantitative and qualitative measures will be used to determine which design is the most suitable for application in underhand mining at David Bell.

"Considering the traumatic events of Canadian mining taxation of the 1970s, one wonders at the sanity of anybody who tries to predict what the 1980s might hold for the tax structure of the mining industry. Yet, the author agreed to tackle this task when called upon to do so at the annual meeting of the Quebec Metal Mining Association in June. The text of this ""daring"" speech follows.IntroductionI have been asked to play the part of the oracle at Delphi, and to predict what the 1980s might hold for the Canadian mining industry in terms of taxation. To appreciate the challenge of this difficult assignment, try to imagine someone in my position back in 1972 attempting to forecast the balance of the 1970s. I daresay that ten years ago nobody could possibly have conceived of the devastating and casualty-ridden rollercoaster ride that mining taxation actually took in the 70s. Nevertheless, I shall examine the entrails and try to shed some light on what might happen during the balance of this decade as far as mineral taxation is concerned.If one were to retreat deep into history, one would find that taxation generally served one purpose-namely, to raise revenues for the government. More recently, an important second function has emerged: taxation is increasingly being used as a fiscal tool-a tool intended to mould and shape future events in order to accomplish certain economic, social and political objectives. It is these two main forces-the need (or desire) for revenues and the perceived convenience of using taxation as a fiscal tool-which will continue to shape the tax structure of the future.In our assessment of where taxation of the mining industry may be headed, we should be able to learn something by looking at where we have been."

Abstract - The Archean Superior Province craton and the Paleoproterozoic Penokean Orogen are major geological sub-divisions of the southern Canadian Shield and account for much of the metallic mineral production of North America. The Superior Province experienced a mainly Archean history involving several cycles of volcanism, plutonism, and tectonism, primarily in the Neo-archean but also including Meso-archean and Paleo-archean cycles as well. Superior Province consists of northern and southern high-grade gneiss sub-provinces and a broad central region of alternating greenstone-granite and metasedimentary belts. The sub-provinces may represent tectonic terranes assembled in the Archean by accretion processes similar to those of some Phanerozoic orogens. Most of the mineral deposits, including VMS, intrusion-related, and lode gold deposits occur in the greenstone- granite sub-provinces where they were formed in an interval of 100 million years or less around 2.7 Ga. The Paleoproterozoic Penokean Orogen comprises supracrustal sequences deposited in fault-controlled epicratonic and rifted margin settings developed on and about the Superior craton. Deposition of the ~2.4 Ga Huronian Supergroup and its paleoplacer uranium deposits in the eastern Penokean Orogen, and their pre-2.2 Ga deformation, were probably unrelated to the deposition of the ~2.1 Ga Marquette Range and Animikie groups and their major taconite iron formations in the west. However, these sequences were deformed together during the ~1.85 Ga Penokean Orogeny which resulted when an assembly of island arcs containing VMS deposits, the Wisconsin magmatic terrane, collided with the Superior block and its Paleoproterozoic cover. The Sudbury structure with its world class Ni-Cu-PGE ores was also formed at this time, possibly triggered by meteorite impact. Metallogenic patterns in the Paleoproterozoic rocks were controlled by a complex interplay of factors including tectonically controlled variations in deposition and deformation, distribution of mineralization in the Archean basement, and oxyatmoversion, the transition from anoxic to oxygenic atmospheric conditions that occurred during the deposition of these sequences.

The host volcanic rocks form two parallel volcanic belts connected by a much smaller cross-cutting band, which trends northeast from Beardmore to Tashota. This connecting band consists of mafic and felsic volcanic, plus clastic sedimentary rocks in a sequence conformable with the contact of the Onaman Lake Batholith to the east. A metamorphic aureole or incorporated xenoliths are lacking along this major contact and the only intrusive relationship observed is chilling between mafic dikes and a cold host granite in proximity to it. Granite dikes are totally lacking in the volcanic succession, or the overlying sedimentary sequence. A major part of this sequence consists of a polymict basal conglomerate with granite boulders and volcanic clasts in a fine-grained chloritic matrix. The nearest source for these boulders is the Onaman Lake batholith.Gold mineralization in significant economic quantities (+ 50 000 ounces) occurs at the top or above the mafic volcanic succession as quartz bands. In the Northern Empire Mine, the band is conformable, folded, boudinaged and the mineral zoning shows a relationship to variations in the host rock, not structural overprinting. In general, where the host mafic tuff is medium-grained, the quartz band is thicker, up to a metre wide, and carries economic grade; where the tuff is finer-grained and bedded, the band is very thin and low grade.Stratigraphic control and metal zoning shows that the mineralization formed as part of the development of the volcano- sedimentary succession. The other major deposits in the area (Leitch and Sturgeon River) have a similar structural history suggesting that they are also syngenetic in terms of the stratigraphic development. Regionally, these deposits were emplaced prior to any significant tectonic deformation but at the end of the mafic volcanic event.The mafic activity was related 10 a period ofextension which caused the volcanic troughs to develop along centres of rifting. The hiatus at the end of this event permitted extensive hydrothermal systems to form and deposit siliceous exhalite bands within sedimentary or terminal mafic volcanic environments in promixity to major thermal sources. Subsequently, the Kenoran Orogeny deformed the entire succession into upright folds with a sub-vertical schistosity. Evidence shows that the deposits have remained intact since deposition."

"The software package described in this paper facilitates the handling of diamond drilling information in the creation and maintenance of a geological information database. Once entered, the drilling information is stored in a direct access file for rapid retrieval. The drill data are sorted into vertical cross sections and interpretation is performed using on-screen menus to define areas of common rock type and outline the mineralized zones. Intersections of individual zones can then be examined and outlined in the longitudinal dimension at a graphics terminal.With the aid of surface-fitting routines, the digitized information can be used to generate three-dimensional models of each zone. From these models intermediate cross sections and level plans can be obtained. Several interpretations are possible and plotter drawings can be obtained. An output file for use by ore reserve estimation software can also be created.Future work will tie this software to geostatistics and mine planning programs and will be aimed at converting mainframe software to run on microcomputers. IntroductionComputer applications in underground mine planning and geology are not new. Operations such as Sherritt Gordono and Kidd Creek have been using software developed about a decade ago for handling geological information and designing stoping blocks. However, general use of such systems has been limited mainly due to the cost of hardware which was affordable only to large corporations. Software to perform the work was usually developed on site and was largely unavailable for use by others, being site-specific, or too expensive for other organizations to purchase.The increasing power of microcomputers and mini-computers, and their relatively low cost compared to the mainframe computers which were previously used, has led to the increased use of computers at mining operations of all sizes. Sources of software for use in geological interpretation and mine planning have increased in number with the proliferation of the use of microcomputers."

A coupled thermal-fluid flow-multicomponent model has been developed to aid in understanding the melting/dissolution behavior of solid Al-rich Material (TiAl) in a liquid titanium pool produced by an electron beam. The model is capable of accounting for the significant phenomena present affecting heat, mass and momentum transport including thermal and compositional buoyancy and Marangoni forces, Darcy attenuation, evaporation, melting and solidification, and the associated release or absorption of latent heat. The modeling results have indicated the compositional fluid flow driving forces (compositional buoyancy and Marangoni forces) contribute significantly to the melting/dissolution process. The model is waiting for validation against empirical data.

"IntroductionThe Hull iron range, comprising the Forsyth, Scott , Baldwin and Lawless properties (Fig. I), is in Gatineau Park, on the outskirt s o f the city of Hull , and about 6 miles (10 kilometres) northwest of the Federal Parliament Buildings.The deposits have been known many years and described numerous times, although the history has been treated lightly in former publications. Total ore shipments have been calculated at 122,700 long tons, of which over 80% were mined before 1900 and 74% in two brief periods: 1870-74 and 1880-82. It is surprising that the period 1870-74 has been overlooked by most authors and 1880-82 ignored altogether. More surprising, the essential data for these two periods are contained in manuscripts of the Robert Bell collection, which must have been available to officers of the Geological Survey o f Canada.The period 1801-1874 ha s already been covered by the writer in ""Pioneer mines”, but much information has come to light since publication. The present paper is therefore based o n new data and a fresh appraisal. However, little additional data were found for the early history (1801-1854) or for the legal cases involving A.H. Baldwin, and these parts were mainly summarized from the relevant sections of the above-mentioned publication.GeologyThe ore deposits are all situated somewhat below the middle of a graphitic, calcitic marble horizon, here folded into a northeast-plunging synform. The Forsyth, Scott and Baldwin deposits are on the south limb of the synform; the Lawless is on the north limb. The marble is underlain by three non-carbonate groups: biotite gneiss with interlayered quartzite (top), granite gneiss and skarn (middle), and biotite-garnet gneiss (bottom). Below these groups is a lower horizon of graphitic, calcitic marble. The whole sequence is Precambrian and has been subjected to high-grade (Grenvillian) metamorphism, but, in the north, is cut by an unmetamorphosed Cambro-Ordovician diabase dyke. "Several Fe, Fe-Cu, and Cu-Ag prospects hosted by Mesozoic carbonate-rich sedimentary rocks that were intruded by diorite stocks define an approximately 20 × 200 km belt along the Andes Cordillera of southwest Mendoza province, Argentina (34°-36°S). This belt includes the Hierro Indio and Vegas Peladas Fe skarns, Las Choicas, and several other Cu-(Ag) prospects.The main features of the Fe skarns include: association with mantle-derived middle Miocene (~15-11 Ma) diorite stocks and sills; widespread alteration including epidote ± amphibole ± magnetite endoskarns, and zoned garnet (Grs0-66 Adr32.5-100) ± magnetite ± pyroxene (Di24-50 Jo2-9 Hd74-41) exoskarns formed from oxidized, saline, high-temperature brines (530º-660ºC; 60-70 wt.% NaCl equiv.); and magnetite-hematite orebodies associated with quartz ± epidote ± calcite ± actinolite formed at lower temperatures (290º-436ºC) from saline fluids (32-50 wt.% NaCl equiv.) of magmatic origin.West of the Fe skarn belt, the Valle Hermoso district covers more than 300 km2 and hosts several poorly known Cu-(Ag) prospects (estimated 30 Mt with 1.5% Cu and 20 g/t Ag). These prospects share many characteristics with the iron oxide copper-gold-type systems and manto-type Cu deposits of northern and central Chile. One of the prospects (Las Choicas) is located at the apex of a regional 015°-trending anticline, along the contact of stratified calcareous sandstone and limestone (Neocallovian-Oxfordian) with a diorite pluton. This pluton has positive Ta and Nb anomalies (on normalized diagrams) and a high Ti content, features uncommon in Miocene diorites associated with Fe skarns and of magmas derived from sub-arc mantle sources. Alteration at Las Choicas includes early widespread chlorite + calcite ± albite ± scapolite ± ilmenite or titanite ± apatite, and local actinolite ± hematite ± biotite alteration of diorite and sedimentary rocks along contacts. Later Cu mineralization (1%-10% Cu) is associated with calcite ± albite ± quartz alteration in fractures, vein networks, and crackle breccias. Mineralization is zoned from bornite ± chalcopyrite ± millerite with Zn, As, Mo, Ag, and U anomalies in the main orebody, through chalcopyrite-rich breccias with Zn anomalies, and chalcopyrite ± tetrahedrite vein networks with Sb, As, Ag, and Zn anomalies in the uppermost zone, to a Cu-depleted pyrite-rich envelope with Co anomalies, and finally to late, barren calcite veins in distal zones."
