Good mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets is required to avoid breakage and excessive deformation during their handling and further processing. However, green balls with good resistance to handling are often too plastic, which impacts the bed permeability in induration furnaces. Measurements of plasticity, bed void fraction and green ball sphericity as well as bed permeability were carried out on various samples of green iron ore pellets having different mechanical strength. Results show that bed void fraction, sphericity and permeability all depend, to some extent, upon green ball mechanical strength (plasticity). Understanding and controlling the mechanical strength of green iron ore pellets would then help to maximize both the productivity of the induration process as well as the quality of fired pellets through a more stable firing process. Results of research work carried out at COREM, with the objective of improving green ball characterization methods, are presented in this paper.

Conflict over mineral development and its impacts on indigenous peoples occurs in many countries around the world. Canada, Bolivia and Peru have experienced mine development for centuries in areas where indigenous communities have been and continue to be affected by the mining industry. On a global basis the mining industry continues to face the challenge of implementing meaningful consultation programs with indigenous peoples. Many governments around the world have adopted sustainable development as a policy and one important element of sustainable development is minimizing social conflict. John Moffet and Francois Bregha (Moffet & Bregha, 1996), in their analysis of the role of law reform in promoting sustainable development, noted that stakeholder participation can reduce this type of conflict. Social conflict can result in expensive litigation and costly project delays for mine developers. Meaningful consultation with indigenous peoples in areas where mine development is proposed can be a critical factor in securing a social licence to operate. A report released by the United Nations in 2005, outlined the elements of a concept called ?free, prior informed consent? (FPIC) that promotes more sustainable development. FPIC provides that mineral exploration and mining should not proceed unless the mining company has secured the consent of the relevant indigenous group(s). This paper employs a comparative approach to evaluate the extent to which three active mining nations, Canada, Bolivia and Peru, require consultation with indigenous residents and adhere to the principle of FPIC. The comparative approach assists in the identification of those consultation elements in the legal regimes of each country that can minimize social conflict in mineral exploration and mine development and therefore contribute to more sustainable development. First, we examine the legal requirements to consult with and accommodate indigenous communities in Canada, a country with a long history of mineral development over a large geographic area that has entrenched in its Constitution the protection of indigenous peoples? rights. We then turn to an analysis of Bolivia, one of the most indigenously conscious mining jurisdictions that has followed the Canadian lead in entrenching constitutional protection for indigenous peoples. Third, the approach to consultation with indigenous peoples in Peru, a nation that has not adopted the Canadian and Bolivian approaches to constitutional protection of indigenous peoples rights, is considered.

Modern mineral exploration depends on multidisciplinary 3-dimensional integration of geological and geophysical data. Identification of the geological sources of geophysical anomalies requires knowledge of the physical properties fingerprint of rock types, formations and their alteration products. Understanding how and why rock physical properties vary within the Earth's subsurface ensures that appropriate geophysical exploration methods can be chosen, and allows for more efficient and effective surveys to be designed. Physical properties knowledge is integral to geophysical modeling - measured data or values estimated based on geological understanding are used to produce realistic forward calculations and to constrain inversion models. Mira Geoscience and the Geological Survey of Canada, in collaboration with industry and academia, are building a Rock Properties Database System (rpds.mirageoscience.com). It compiles the most valuable physical properties for mineral exploration (density, porosity, magnetic susceptibility and remanence, electrical resistivity and chargeability) linked with location and lithological metadata. A critical knowledge gap, addressed in this study, concerns the dependence of physical properties on alteration and mineralization processes. We report on the results of a collaborative University of British Columbia - Geoscience British Columbia project, ?Integrated Geological & Geophysical Porphyry Models: Adding Value to Geoscience BC Geophysical Data?. As part of the QUEST and QUEST-West geophysical initiatives, Geoscience BC focused detailed geophysical surveys on a suite of six known porphyry deposits: Mount Milligan, Endako, Huckleberry, Bell, Granisle, and Morrison. Physical properties for a set of 269 samples of characteristic host rocks and their altered equivalents were measured. The causes of physical properties variations were investigated through their correlations with ore and alteration mineralogy determined from thin-section observations and X-ray diffraction analyses. Physical properties of variably altered host-rocks and intrusive rocks vary significantly between different BC porphyry deposits. No specific unifying geophysical model exists that can be uniformly applied during exploration. Knowledge of local background geology and local physical properties variations is necessary as host-rocks and intrusive rock compositions vary depending on magmatic affinities, and alteration styles will vary reflecting host-rock compositions, crustal depth and influence of meteoric water. A district-scale exploration strategy requires location of intrusive bodies, which are commonly magnetic, resistive and low in density. Correlations should not be expected between density and magnetic susceptibility, because alteration may lead to magnetite destruction or to secondary magnetite development. Deposit-scale ground geophysics might image potassic alteration zones that can be magnetic in both alkalic and calcalkalic systems. Low magnetic susceptibilities, resistivities and densities might aid in locating the typically more porous phyllic and argillic zones. All geophysical data must be interpreted with background knowledge of local rock types and in light of the expected deposit model and associated magmatic and hydrothermal processes. The most effective means to building physical properties knowledge prior to geophysical investigation remains collecting rock physical properties measurements. The cost of rock properties data collection is low, relative to the overall costs of running a mineral exploration program, and can provide an important framework for design of geophysical surveys, survey method selection, geophysical modelling, and data interpretation.

Smelting has been the primary method of treatment for refractory copper sulfide concentrates such as enargite (Cu3AsS4), but the pyrometallurgical processing generates elevated levels of volatile arsenic. The present research investigates a novel hydrometallurgical process of oxidative dissolution of enargite at ambient conditions in the presence of chlorine dioxide (ClO2), a very powerful oxidant generated in solution by the reaction between a strong acid (HCl or H2SO4) and sodium chlorite (NaClO2). The effects of initial oxidant concentration, particle size, agitation speed and temperature on dissolution kinetics and copper extraction were investigated. It was found that a stoichiometric ratio of ClO2:Cu3AsS4 = 9:1 were needed to completely and congruently dissolve the mineral with fast kinetics (<15 minutes) under ambient temperature. The dissolution extent (metal extraction) increases with increasing ClO2 concentration and decreasing particle size of solids, but is not influenced by temperature or agitation speed.

Efficient separation of minerals is the essence of mineral processing. Separation of hexagonal pyrrhotite in processing of Ni-Cu sulphide ores was investigated together with particle size effects with respect to selective flotation recovery of pentlandite and nickel. The recovery by size response was compared for sodium metabisulphite (SMBS), triethylenetetramine (TETA) and their combinations with amyl xanthate as a collector. The pyrrhotite recovery for all sizes was lower than that of pentlandite for the blank case as well as individual cases with SMBS and TETA. For pyrrhotite, the recovery by size relations in the case of individual uses of reagents were mainly determined by recovery losses at coarser size range (>74 um), which occurs at a coarser size for pentlandite (>212 um). The combined use of SMBS and TETA, and the associated synergistic effect very significantly knocked down the pyrrhotite recovery to less than 7% that was a maximum for the –10 um (attributable to hydraulic entrainment). High recovery of pentlandite in a wide range of intermediate sizes and drastically low recovery of pyrrhotite resulted in a very efficient separation of pentlandite from pyrrhotite in all sizes. Separation of this mineral is discussed in relation to fundamental functionality of the reagents used.

The hydrometallurgy curriculum for undergraduate students at the University of Utah has evolved to contain a variety of tools to help students understand and apply hydrometallurgy in a context that has industrial relevance. In order for students to perform as engineers in an industrial hydrometallurgy setting, they need to understand thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals and be able to apply these fundamentals to extraction, concentration, and recovery applications. Students must also understand related environmental, economic, and assessment issues in hydrometallurgy and be able to work with others. In order to meet these needs, the hydrometallurgy curriculum includes a variety of relevant subject information, on-line resources, laboratory experiences, and team work opportunities to help prepare students for careers involving hydrometallurgy. The development and use of these resources will be discussed in this paper.

A gold bearing pyrite concentrate was treated at the pilot scale for the extraction of gold. Mineralogical analysis of the concentrates identified gold to be mainly present in the form of a solid solution in pyrite. Gold distribution resulted in a poor extraction yield of 55 % by direct cyanidation. A piloting campaign including an oxidative pre-treatment by roasting in a fluid bed was followed by treatment with halogens for gold extraction and has led to a gold extraction yield of 94%. Sulphur removal during the oxidation was very efficient at >99.5% and gold extraction by the halogens was completed within a 1 hour contact time. The piloting was performed on a 300 kg sample and used a diluted solution of hypohalites as the oxidizing agent for gold extraction. Sulphuric acid was injected in the reactor during the halogens treatment to lower pH to 2. The diluted solution of hypohalites (1-3%) was generated by electrolysis during the piloting campaign in a diaphragm-less electrolysis cell. The extracted gold was recovered via adsorption over silica and the gold depleted brine was treated for impurities removal. This brine was recycled for further gold extraction. With the recycling of water and brine, the regeneration of hypohalites and with a barren solid that is inert and stable, the Nichromet Extraction technology is a green process where the protection of the environment does not preclude profitability.

Brunswick Mine has been involved in a comprehensive research program investigating site specific aspects of thiosalt management to eliminate its adverse environmental effects. Minimum annual reagent cost estimates for thiosalt treatment using hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite are $400K and $1.5 million respectively. Also, minimum costs for the use of bicarbonate to buffer the pH depression associated with thiosalt oxidation in the receiving environment is in the order of $400K annually. A design of experiment (DOE) research program identified that natural UV radiation, temperature, DO and water chemistry are key factors influencing the natural oxidation rate of thiosalts within Brunswick?s water management system. A DOE surface response model was used to describe the thiosalt oxidation kinetics, which were then used to develop a predictive oxidation model for thiosalt and pH control of the mill?s reclaim water system.

"The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) Near Detector Hall at Fermilab and the Lafarge – Conco Mine are located approximately 100 meters underground in the Galena-Platteville dolomite just below its contact with the overlying Maquoketa shale in Northeastern Illinois, USA. A new cavern was excavated adjacent to the MINOS Near Detector Hall at Fermilab to house the near detector for the Off-axis Neutrino Appearance Experiment (NOvA) program. During this excavation approximately 1150 cubic meters of shale rock were removed. Tiltmeter arrays consisting of a series of hydrostatic leveling sensors (HLS), which are spaced regularly over a total distance of 50-to-100 meters, were used to monitor subsurface deformations. The tiltmeter response in the MINOS Near Detector Hall due to the NOvA cavern excavation is approximately thirteen times the estimated response based on using laboratorydetermined properties. The discrepancy between modeled and measured tilt is likely due to differences in Young’s Modulus in the rock mass versus in a small laboratory sample. Amplitudes of measured solid earth tides differ from the amplitudes of theoretical solid earth tides by up to 40 percent for both arrays. This is likely due to a local heterogeneity or discontinuity.INTRODUCTIONLong baseline tiltmeters have been used to record small earth movements since the early 1900s. One of the first studies using long baseline tiltmeters to measure earth tides was published by Michelson (1914). He used a leveled 152-meter long, 0.15-meter diameter tube half-filled with water connecting two concrete-lined pits. The pipe was trenched 1.75 meters underground in Williams Bay, Wisconsin in a sandy-clay soil. Initially only an east-west line was used, though a north-south line was added after it was seen that viable results were obtained. Measurements were made by hand either hourly or once every two hours depending on the time of day. When compared to 0.7 times the calculated earth tides, the tiltmeter signal matched almost exactly. This excellent result began the use of long baseline tiltmeters to measure small earth movements."

Before enlarging on this statement and reviewing some of the uses of aerial survey in industrial development it is important to de-fine what is meant by "aerial survey". The subject will be discussed in the broadest sense and references will be made to the four sections that compose the overall field of surveying operations from the air. These are: 1. Aerial photography and photo-graphic mapping. 2. The use of airborne electronic instruments for geodetic distance measurement and the determination of ground elevations. 3. Airborne geophysical surveying. 4. The extraction of qualitative and quantitative information from aerial photographs through the processes of "reading", analysis and interpretation. The last few years have been eventful ones for Manitoba in connection with mineral development. Perhaps the past year has been the most important of all. It is therefore a suitable time to review the mining situation in the Province. In order to obtain, in the following paper, a proper set ting from which to discuss the trend of recent developments, a brief review of the story of mining will first be given. This will include a summary of a few of the outstanding facts regarding prospecting, discovery, and operations in the several known metalliferous areas of the Province. Following this will come a more detailed description of activities during the past year or two. Special attention will then be paid to the outstanding enterprises, such a~ those associated with the names of Flin Flon, Sherritt-Gordon, and Central Manitoba, names which have been attracting the attention of the mining world to Manitoba. And last of all will be presented a brief summary of mineral production, which, so far, has largely been credited to non-metallics. HISTORICAL To aid a proper comprehension of the recent trend in mining, it is well not to lose sight of the history of development in the different metalliferous areas in Manitoba. This Province seems throughout to have been more or less dependent on mining interest excited by discoveries in the neighbouring province of Ontario. The first interest came as an effect of the Lake of the Woods mining boom, when small adjacent parts of Manitoba were prospected. Several discoveries were made, but no mining industry resulted.

"Medium Voltage (MV) metal clad switchgear is referred to as the voltage class from 2.4 kV to 38 kV. Technological advances in circuit breaker designs over the last 20 years have given rise to retrofit options in lieu of complete replacement for older outdated circuit breaker technology. This paper examines the four MV breaking techniques that exist in industry and investigates various retrofit versus refurbish options for switchgear modernization and life extension. IntroductionThe life extension and upgrade of medium voltage circuit breakers is becoming an increasingly important issue in today’s modern industrial facilities from both a reliability and safety standpoint. Unscheduled downtime, loss of production, and plant safety issues are just some of the concerns that need to be addressed with aging switchgear. A thorough examination of the available breaking mediums allows an informed decision to be made when the time comes to assess equipment performance. If you look back over the history of medium voltage breakers, you will find that there have been four breaking techniques developed and widely used:• air magnetic;• minimum oil;• vacuum; and• SF6.Many facilities that were constructed 25 to 30 years ago relied on air magnetic or minimum oil circuit breakers in their distribution systems. At the time, these were the only “tried and tested” options and they afforded good service. Since then, however, newer technology has given us the vacuum and SF6 mediums which have both proven their reliability and monopolized the market. All the methods have their particular place in industry and what follows is a summary of the advantages, disadvantages, and chronological development of each breaking technique."

In the this study, surface segregation of Mg and Ca with Mg addition range from 5 to 10wt% in Al-Mg alloys with Mg+Al2Ca master alloy and its effect on the oxidation resistance were investigated. The addition of Mg+Al2Ca master alloy as the Mg alloying element led to the surface enrichment of Mg and Ca during high temperature oxidation. As a result of the oxidation test by TGA, the oxidation resistance of all the examined alloys was significantly improved with increasing Al2Ca content. The weight change of Al2Ca added Al-5Mg and Al-7.5Mg alloys indicated the complete oxidation resistance during the whole oxidation test time, while a slight weight increase was shown in the case of Al-Mg alloys even with Al2Ca addition. The improvement of the oxidation resistance in Al2Ca added alloys may be attributed to the formation of the protective oxide layer mixed with CaO and MgO on the surface.

"Introduction The Coal Valley Mine is operated by Luscar Stereo (1977) Ltd. with the Alberta Energy Company having a minority interest. The mine produces 2.0 million tonnes of bituminous thermal coal per year. Deliveries include 1.5 million tonnes to Ontario Hydro and 0.5 million tonnes to the export market via bulk handling facilities on the west coast near Vancouver, B.C. There are a number of mining methods utilized at the mine including open-pit by truck and shovel, strip mining with large draglines and stripping with scrapers. The mine is located 100 km south of Edson, Alberta. Geology The coal measures are concentrated within a 210-metre int~rval of the Paleocene section. The coal seams were originally named by the mining companies in the earliest days of development of the area and these names continue to be used today. Of the five main seams, only three are presently economic to mine based on quality, thickness and depth of cover. These are the Val d'Or, Upper Silkstone and Mynheer. The Coal Valley Mine is located in the structurally deformed foothills area of Alberta and the structure of each mining area is therefore very complex. The general bedding strike is 305 degrees azimuth but major thrust faulting and folding has extensively deformed the natural seams as a closer examination will show. The Mynheer Seam, located at the base of the coal measures, ranges in thickness from 5 m to 10 m and has numerous bentonite and shale partings. Because of inherent geological features, the Mynheer Seam has been subdivided into two zones, the Mynheer 'A' and the Mynheer 'B', and the mining of coal in these zones has necessitated the utilization of distinctly different mining methods. The structural regime of the Mynheer 'A' zone consists of an overturned asymmetrical anticline crest containing a steeply dipping major thrust fault which has raised the seam above the present topographic level. Further extensive shearing and rotation of the coal has resulted in the coal taking a 'pod' shape. The Mynheer 'B' Zone is a continuation to the southeast along strike from the Mynheer 'A' Zone. The bedding dips to the southwest at an average of 12 degrees and is interrupted at the south end by a transverse fault and to the north by its outcrop at the surface."

Mineral carbonation (MC) has been extensively researched all over the world since it was found as a natural exothermic process to permanently and safely sequester CO2. In order to accelerate the natural process, various methods for carbonation of Mg-/Ca-silicate minerals and other industrial wastes have been studied. It has been found that the MC efficiency will increase with an increase of CO2 pressure, retention time, temperature, mass ratio of Mg or Ca to Si in minerals, specific surface area, and the slurry concentration in a specific range, and with the introduction of an effective catalysts, for example, 1M NaCl and 0.64M NaHCO3 or carbonic anhydrase. However, there still is not a successful industrial application because of high economic cost and slow reaction rate. It is not economic to exploit Mg- and Ca-silicate minerals deposits or tailings to sequester CO2 by MC, due to the cost of grinding and heat pre-treatment and in some cases the whole sequestration process may result in more CO2 emissions than the amount of CO2 sequestered, due to the requirements of energy inputs. The process however, may be profitable as a whole (with carbon credits). It is suggested to combine MC with recovery of valuable metals from ore deposits in order to reduce the cost for MC by cost sharing for mineral recovery.

The addition of precipitated silica greatly enhances chalcopyrite leaching in the presence of sodium chloride at moderate temperatures (65-90°C) in acid media with ferric ions as the oxidant. The beneficial effect increases with the increase in chloride concentration and temperature. The addition of sodium silicate and silica sand has no significant influence. The analysis of solubility data in acid/salt solutions indicates that the solubility of silica as Si(OH)4 as the dissolved species is controlled by the activity of water, as expected from the hydration theory. Kinetic analysis shows the trends that copper dissolution from chalcopyrite in the presence of precipitated silica with sodium chloride follows a shrinking sphere model indicating a chemically controlled surface reaction. The effect of temperature on copper dissolution in the presence of both precipitated silica and sodium chloride was also larger compared to the results in sodium chloride alone. The SEM analysis shows that chloride and silica facilitates the precipitation of sulfur on the surface of the silica particles rather than the chalcopyrite particles which avoids the blockage of the mineral surface and thus improves the leaching kinetics.

La fibre d&apos;amiante est constituée de fib rilles élementaires d&apos;un diamètre d&apos;environ 0.02 um qui ont une résistance en tension de I&apos;ordre de celie de la fibre de verre ou de carbone(1). Pour être efficace, la fibre de renf&apos;ort d&apos;un matériau composite doit d&apos;une part, avo ir des propriétés mécaniques intrinsèques élevées, et d&apos;autre part, adhérer solidement â la matrice pour que Ie transfert de charge s&apos;effectue sans qu&apos;il y ait décohésion entre les composantes du matériau.La fibre d&apos;amiante étant naturellement soyeuse, il faut la traiter superficiellement pour que l&apos;adhésion avec la matrice soit suffisante. Ainsi, on recouvre la fibre de phénol-formaldéhyde(2) ou de silane(3) lorsqu&apos;elle est employée avec une matrice polymere. Dans Ie cas d&apos;une matrice métallique, ces dépôts organiques ne peuvent resister aux températures de mise en oeuvre, d&apos;où l&apos;intérêt de plaquer les fibres par un dépôt métallique.Dans cette étude, nous rapportons les résultats relatifs à la methode utilisée pour plaquer au cuivre la fibre d&apos;amiante chrysotile. "In Cu-Mo deposits it is usual to find considerable amounts of pyrite (FeS2). When processing this kind of ore by flotation, pyrite is rejected using lime to increase the pH to alkaline conditions (pH ~10.5). In the case of using seawater without pre-processing, i.e., raw seawater, the lime consumption increases dramatically and the recovery of molybdenite drops due to the precipitation of magnesium hydroxide on its surface. In order to avoid these negative effects, alternative ways of depressing pyrite should be considered.The current work introduces the use of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, bacteria commonly used in bioleaching, as an alternative to depress pyrite in seawater flotation. The paper presents the results of biodepression in three systems: fresh water, water with added sodium chloride at 35 g/L (which corresponds to the salt concentration in seawater ) and seawater. The results show that it is possible to bio-depress pyrite with A. ferrooxidans in natural seawater pH (7.8-8.2). A similar behaviour is observed when running the experiments in fresh water, and in water with sodium chloride added.INTRODUCTIONWater is a scarce but essential resource for human development. The main reason for this scarcity is that, although 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water, only 3% of the total is fresh water and an important part of this water is frozen, so that only 1% of fresh surface water can be used for human activities. In Chile, most of the mining activity is concentrated in the north of the country, located in the Atacama Desert, considered the world's driest desert. That is why some mining companies have chosen to use seawater in their processes. For example, Esperanza (Antofagasta Minerals), and Sierra Gorda (KGHM International) use raw seawater in their flotation processes."

IN 1932, Horace Onyett at Oroville, California, built a practical floating washing plant along the general lines as now known, using a 24 in. by 12 ft. trammel; it was fed with a ½ yard dragline bucket, rated then at 200 yards per day. Onyett dubbed his plant a &apos;Doodlebug&apos; which name has clung to this type of operation ever since. In general, the &apos;Doodlebug&apos; dredge is the outgrowth of the depression of 1929, wherein many dirt contractors had surplus idle equipment and a few of them ventured to use it for placer mining. Many such plants were impractical and poorly designed and adapted often to locations not suited to the purpose. However out of the general idea came refinements until today dragline dredging has a very definite place in the gold production of the world. Many of the early operators, being mainly contractors without mining experience or technical knowledge of gold saving, geology, or mechanical design, naturally went through stages of trial and error until a workable unit became standard practice. Credit should be given Bodenson Iron Works of San Francisco, who did a notable job of pioneering and building of floating washing plants; also, to Lord and Bishop, contractors of Sacramento, who were among the early operators, and to several others who built and rebuilt their plants until the weak spots were strengthened to take the beating required, and yet deliver a high degree of efficiency.
