The primary (sulphide) resources at Aphrodite are refractory in nature, requiring an oxidation process stage to be introduced to facilitate extraction of the gold. The company is investigating the use of pressure oxidation (POX) as the oxidation method for processing of high grade gold bearing concentrate it plans to produce at Aphrodite. POX has been used extensively around the world for the past 30 years and continues to be the favoured option for a number of refractory gold plants currently in the design and construction stages. Initial pressure oxidisation testing investigated the effect of temperature, pressure and grind size on a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from Alpha lode material. The concentrate averaged 47.3 g/t gold and was prepared from a composite of core samples averaging 1.49 g/t gold. Sub-samples of the concentrate were subjected to POX for 1 hour resulting in rapid oxidation during this very short period. Testing undertaken showed that there was a significant increase in sulphide oxidisation at higher temperature (220°C) and pressure (2,500 k/Pa) for the two grind sizes (75 and 20 microns) evaluated. The proposed flowsheet, OPEX and CAPEX are critical aspects for project development.

"Waste rock is one of the most abundant materials at mine sites and must be properly characterized and managed to limit acid rock drainage and other harmful byproducts. An experimental waste rock pile—part of the test piles research program—located at the Diavik diamond mine (Northwest Territories, Canada) was deconstructed and sampled to study the spatial variability of material properties. Bulk samples were classified based on the amount of material finer than 4.75 mm. Hydraulic properties of each sample were estimated and particle size distribution analysis was completed. The large volume of material and the large size of particles make it difficult to collect representative samples. Sampling techniques are often dis-ruptive to mining operations because they alter the structure of the waste rock pile or interfere with mine traffic. The convention at most mine sites to collect little to no information on waste rock material means that models and predictions of how waste material will behave and interact with the surrounding environment are based on general information that might not be site specific. This could lead to environmental damage or higher costs if environmental effects are underestimated during the construction of waste rock structures."

With the gold industry looking to process more complex ores, the online measurement and control of cyanide addition to the gold leaching circuit has become more crucial. This paper compares the two commonly employed "free" cyanide online analysis methods (amperometric and potentiometric end-point silver nitrate titration) with the common site laboratory rhodanine endpoint silver nitrate titration and ion selective electrode methods. Measurement differences between these methods are presented and discussed for cyanide solutions containing copper and zinc with varying cyanide to metal ion ratios. The resulting cyanide available to leach gold is also compared with these measurements.

Rehabilitation of mined out areas is often enforced by environmental bonding. It is usually assumed that this process provides financial assurance that rehabilitation will be carried out as agreed at the permitting stage. Shortcomings of the current practice in environmental bonding for mining are reviewed. Of particular importance for the public, for governments and for the environment is the absence of protection against cost overruns and companies defaulting before the bond amount is entirely paid. Elements of solution are identified through the emergence of environmental insurance as a complement to bonding for cost overruns and defaults. A cover of environmental catastrophes could also be added, hence reducing the risk for the public and the environment. We examine the merit of creating a captive insurance company under the responsibility of the mining industry. The use of insurance techniques would incorporate a genuine risk management dimension to the financing of rehabilitation.

"New tax rules that can apply to the repayment, extinguishment, or other settlement of a company's debt are finally taking shape. These new rules are far-reaching in their application, and can affect mining companies in a serious, negative way.IntroductionIn his February 1994 budget, Finance Minister Paul Martin announced changes to the Income Tax Act that could have an adverse impact on a company that restructures its debt. Since then, the new rules have undergone considerable transformation during their fetal stage: draft legislation was introduced in July 1994; revised draft legislation was introduced December 1994; and a third version of draft legislation was introduced February 1995. It seems that the new rules have now been pretty well finalized, and they contain some serious traps that the unwary could fall into. The new rules are of particular importance to mining companies, because a mining company's resource pools will be caught under the new rules, whereas these pools escaped the wrath of the old rules. The following commentary summarizes the new rules that are generally referred to as the ""debt forgiveness"" rules."

For its Zuuvch Ovoo uranium deposit in Mongolia, Badrakh Energy (partly owned by Orano Mining) is working on the prefeasibility study for exploitation by ISR (in situ recovery). As part of this project, Orano built a 2-cell (each cell is constituted of one producer well located in the center and surrounded by six injection wells in an hexagonal pattern) and a processing pilot plant that will be used to demonstrate the operability and economic viability of an ISR process. Another main objective of this pilot trial is to demonstrate the ability of Orano’s modeling tools to predict the ore behavior under given leaching conditions. To model uranium production by ISR, Orano uses HYTEC, a reactive transport computational software, which was adapted for its existing operation in Kazakhstan (Katco) to predict uranium recovery and reagent usage based on operating conditions. In order to perform similar simulations for this new deposit, Orano engaged in a comprehensive program including ore sampling, detailed characterization, and metallurgical testwork. The mineralogical conclusions were used to prepare a simplified geochemistry for the ore, in particular carbonate and reactive clay grades, uranium mineralization and penalizing elements such as pyrite. Then, bottle roll leach tests were used to characterize dissolution kinetics for smectite clays. Eventually, column leach test results such as pH, free acid, and uranium recovery were modeled on HYTEC to improve the fit of some of the dissolution kinetic parameters. Parameters fitted using metallurgical test work results will now be used as inputs for predictive model at the pilot scale, in order to anticipate operational results and help with operating decisions for production ramp up.

The equilibrium solubilities of gibbsite, Al(OH)3, and boehmite, A1OOH, have been extensively studied in our laboratory from 30 to 90°C, and 100 to 300°C, respectively, to ionic strengths of 5 mol.kg-1 (NaC1) over a wide range of pH. The resulting solubility constants have been treated with consistent empirical models that incorporate appropriate experimental data taken from the literature. These studies were initiated in part to understand and quantify scale formation in geothermal fields as a result of fluid re-injection from electric power generating plants. Most of the experimental results were obtained through application of a unique potentiometric method that allows for rapid, precise measurement of the in situ pH and allows the approach to equilibrium to be monitored from under- and super-saturation. The experimental program was extended to deal with more basic solutions (e.g., five molal NaOH), in which the dissolution of boehmite was measured for application to the refining of bauxite by the Bayer process. More recent results in strong caustic solutions at temperatures below 90°C were obtained to investigate the dissolution of aluminum-containing sludge from holding tanks at the Savannah River waste reprocessing site. In this case the solubility enhancing effects (kinetic and equilibrium) of triethanolamine were also established and quantified. Finally, potentiometric solubility experiments were conducted (50°C in 0.l mol-kg-1, NaCl) on aluminum alloy sheets to identify mainly the nature of the aluminum oxide/hydroxide surface layer formed under these conditions.

This paper reviews the history of modern iron-control processes in hydrometallurgy. Attention is paid to processes developed in the electrolytic zinc industry for removal of iron from zinc sulfate leach liquors and the problems faced by the industry in the safe disposal of the iron residues produced by these processes. Past lessons learned are projected onto current efforts to develop hydrometallurgical processes for treatment of copper sulfide concentrates. It is argued that any attempt to create a \u201chydrometallurgical copper smelter\u201d will fail, unless methods are developed that can recover iron in a form that can be directly used by the steel or pigment industries.

The mining industry is undergoing a period of rapid transformative change.  This is the result of the social and financial accountabilities that the industry is faced with because of the world’s desire to cap average temperature increase to 1.50C above pre-industrial levels (UNFCC, 2016).  To limit global warming to 1.50C, greenhouse gas emissions must peak before 2025 at the latest and decline 43% by 2030.  In hard rock mining, comminution is identified as the major energy consumer, being responsible for 40-60% of the electricity use.  It follows that comminution is the major greenhouse gas emission process of the mine.  All effort is being made to radically reduce the carbon emissions of comminution. Grinding media plays a large role in the energy consumption and carbon emission story.  In recent years industry practitioners have attempted to quantify the grinding media carbon footprint.  This paper makes a definitive contribution to that discussion.  The grinding media carbon footprint is quantified in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emission terms in the context of a grinding media supplier.  Major emission contributors, steel, natural gas and electricity are discussed in detail.  The steel industry transition is a key factor. The paper will explore the steel industry transition and its effect on grinding media manufacturing.  The carbon footprint of heritage steel process routes are analysed and compared with the process routes of the future.  Emerging steel making technologies are presented and discussed.  The future of the steel manufacturing and procurement route for grinding media is proposed. This narrative allows for a comparison between the heritage carbon footprint and the future carbon footprint of manufactured grinding media.  Of equal importance is the opportunity of reducing the grinding media carbon footprint in the field.  The paper explores possibilities of reducing the grinding media carbon footprint at the customer site.  Media in use options are presented that take account of the mineral characteristics, the mill dynamics, and the product metallurgy to optimise both carbon footprint and media performance. It is intended that this is a landmark paper in the discussion of the carbon footprint of grinding media.

"This paper reviews the installation, start-up, and operation of a comprehensive monitoring and targeting management technique in which all plant utilities (i.e., electricity, natural gas, compressed air, and water) are managed as controllable resources in the same way that raw materials, mined ore, personnel and capital are managed.The essential elements of monitoring and targeting (M&T) include:•gathering in a systematic, disciplined way the utility information by energy account centres;•closely monitoring the utilities used in each centre and comparing them with production on a common time base (e.g., kWh/ton per day);•bench marking and target setting to pro-vide attainable energy reduction goals which can be further refined as they are achieved; and•establishing an implementation plant that may provide efficiency enhancing benefits to various operating areas within the plant.The M&T system will reduce utility consumption per unit of production on a continuing basis.This would translate into sustained operating cost and waste. M&T will also provide better information for assessing the plant operation and progressively implementing further enhancements."

"Geological and technical problems are often considered the most important ones affecting new mining projects. Typical problems and likely causes are reviewed based on current Quality Management and Continuous Improvement (QMCI) perspectives, giving particular attention to the work of W.E. Deming. As the “system approach” is an essential part of these policies, its characteristics are described with particular attention given to cultural- behavioural, organizational and systembased constraints described by J. Gharajedaghi. Given that poor communication and interaction among geologists, mineral processors and mining engineers/operators can seriously affect the adequacy of tests, project planning and execution, and mine profitability, these interrelated processes within the mining systems are analyzed and modelled. The impacts on models and simulations of ignoring typical data, information and knowledge uncertainties are addressed. Adapting W.E. Deming’s Fourteen Points, System of Profound Knowledge and insistence on leadership, and the analysis of mining system constraints, will allow the effective QMCI approach required to reduce geological and technical risks. Whenever we achieve this goal, we will be in a better position to overcome environment-, market-, finance- and community-related problems, achieve higher company and industry profitability as well as more sustained development. RÉSUMÉLes problèmes géologiques et techniques sont souvent considérés les plus importants parmi ceux qui affectent les nouveaux projets miniers. Des problèmes typiques et leur causes sont étudiés dans la perspective de gestion de la qualité et d’amélioration continue (GQAC), en relation avec les travaux de W.E. Deming. Comme l’approche système est au centre de ces méthodes, ses caractéristiques sont décrites en donnant une attention particulière aux contraintes de types culturel-comportemental, organisationnel, et systémique décrites par J. Gharajedaghi. Compte-tenu que les lacunes dans les communications et les interactions entre géologues, minéralurgistes, et ingénieurs/opérateurs miniers peuvent affecter sérieusement la validité des essais, de la planification et de l’exécution des projets ainsi que la rentabilité des exploitations, ces processus connexes font l’objet d’analyse et de modélisation. Les impacts sur les modèles et les simulations de l’incertitude des données, informations et connaissances sont soulignés. En adaptant au système minier les Quatorze Obligations et le Système de connaissance approfondie de W.E. Deming ainsi que l’analyse des trois types de contraintes, nous pourrons développer une approche GQAC permettant de réduire les risques géologiques et techniques des projets miniers et des exploitations. Application of teleoperated and automated mobile equipment in underground metal mines represents a promising avenue to overcome some of the challenges facing the industry. This paper addresses the issues of overall effectiveness of the autonomous loading and haulage equipment in comparison with conventional man-operated machines. It overviews and discusses the factors affecting availability, utilization and production rate. It puts an emphasis on some problems and risks not present in conventional man-operated systems, as well as their character and criticality. It stresses the need to analyze the factors affecting OEE of the autonomous equipment more in-depth than it has been done up to date and to take them into consideration at the stage of feasibility studies. The paper concludes with some recommendations and indicates the directions of the future research in this field.

"Autoclaves have been in commercial use in the mining industry since the early 1950's the initial applications included tin, uranium, cobalt, nickel and copper extraction under both acidic and alkaline conditions. These circuits varied in batch or continuous operation. The geometry has been spherical, vertical, and horizontal type with up to six agitators, with throughput as high as 1000 stpd.Presently autoclaves are a good process selection for many refractory sulphide gold bearing ores. The first application of pressure oxidation in the gold industry was at the Homestake Mcglaughlin's Mine which was commissioned in 1985. This was an acidic pressure oxidation process treating 3000 stpd in three four compartment horizontal autoclaves 14' diameter and 53' long. Since the initiation of autoclaves for the treatment of gold bearing sulphides, there are presently 16 gold autoclaves operating worldwide varying in size up to 18'4"" inside diameter. There are seven autoclaves for the treatment of refractory sulphide gold bearing ores to be commissioned in 1997 and 1998.Autoclave technology has progressed extensively since the mid-eighties. Operational experience has made rapid progress and the result is much smoother and safer autoclave operation. There have been many advances in autoclave technology design. For example, the use of exotic materials for corrosion resistance to reduce down time for maintenance. The instrumentation involved in autoclave operation is very sophisticated which allows for many safety features. The advanced design has allowed for greater availability and as a result operating costs and maintenance costs have decreased. These technological advancements have made autoclave technology more safe and this has resulted in a greater acceptance of this type of operation. Many of the gold autoclave facilities operate up to 9 months continuously without shutdowns. The advancement of autoclave technology has inspired many new applications.Because of the outstanding operation of autoclaves in the gold industry, many other applications for autoclave technology are being considered. "Aiming at the problems of the existing calculation methods for the support pressures of shallow tunnels in layered jointed rock strata, by using OAT (orthogonal array testing strategy) and DEM (distinct element method), 12 influencing factors including the thickness of the weathered overburden, and the states of the rock joints were considered. Then, the classification of the loosening zone was analysized. On this basis, by using the DEA (data envelopment analysis) theory, quantitative analysis on the influencing factors was conducted. By analyzing the influence of the key factors, a prediction formula of the boundary of the ringent trumpet-shaped loosening zone was established. According to principles of stress transformation, the formula of support pressures of the loosening zone which could considering the key factors were deduced. Finally, a practical case was introduced and studied to verify the proposed method.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, various urban subway tunnels are increasingly carried out through jointed rock strata in many cities. Rock masses are discontinuous mediums with fissures, fractures, joints, bedding planes, and faults. The frequency of joints, their orientation with respect to the engineering structures, and the roughness of the joint have a significant importance from the stability point of view. However, there is a lack of understanding about the influence of the joints on the stability of tunnels. Therefore, how to measure the degree of the joints’ influence is a problem that needs to be solved.For the calculation of the support pressures, until now, many research results were focused on soil ground (Bierbäumer 1913; Terzaghi, 1943; Peck, 1969; Sabatini et al., 1999). In terms of site tests and model indoor tests, by measuring strut loads and calculating earth pressure based on strut spacing, the results proposed by Peck (1969) and Tschebotarioff (1973) have been widely used in practice for designing excavation support systems under sand (drained) and clay (undrained) soil conditions. Note that, it is unclear whether these findings could be extended to rock strata. For numerical simulations, how to simulate the states of the rock joints is a key problem that needs to be solved."

Falcon centrifugal gravity separation tests were conducted to study desulfurization and de-ashing performance with different size fractions of a high-sulfur Chinese -0.5mm fine coal in a dense medium. Performance indicators such as combustible recovery, ash and sulfur rejection, and desulfurization efficiency were used to evaluate the separation efficiency. The results show that for -0.5 mm coal particles, all performance indicators except ash rejection are higher for the Falcon concentrator than for flotation. More specifically, for the +0.125 mm size fraction, Falcon centrifugal separation produced better ash and sulfur rejection performance than froth flotation. However, the Falcon concentrator also showed higher combustible recovery but lower ash and sulfur rejection than froth flotation for the -0.125 mm size fraction.

Umicore and MWH jointly demonstrated that mechanical dewatering of goethite and neutralised tailings significantly increased the life of a 30 ha tailings pond and improved the operation of the pond. Umicore operates one of its zinc production plants in Balen, Belgium. As part of its production process, an excess of neutralised and goethite¬containing tailings is generated. These have historically been stored inside large lined ponds. As the storage area of the current goethite pond was nearing its capacity, Umicore studied the potential for an extension to the existing embankment. However, this extension would face intense regulatory scrutiny, because the environmental and safety impacts were considered important. Together with Umicore, MWH suggested and investigated an alternative treatment approach consisting of mechanical dewatering prior to storage. A feasibility study was prepared where wet storage was compared to dry storage. Differences in safety risks, environmental impacts and economic costs were outlined. The study demonstrated that the life of the tailings pond could be increased from 6 to 22 years, seriously reducing the environmental impacts and safety risks at no significantly higher cost than would have been incurred with the continued operation of the existing pond. The results of the study are presented in this paper.

"The Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) has been operating successfully for 14 years, and has an ancestry dating back over 30 years. Together with complementary developments in stock exchange listing rules, the Code has brought about substantially improved standards of public reporting by Australasian mining and exploration companies. The Code is regarded as a world leader in its field, and has been used as a basis for the development of resource/reserve reporting standards in other countries. The reasons for its success are varied, foremost among them being its adoption in full by the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges, and the ability and willingness of mining industry organizations to bring Competent Persons to account when necessary.The latest revision of the JORC Code was undertaken in 2002-2003, based in part on releases of upgraded reporting standards in Canada, the United Kingdom/Western Europe, and South Africa, and the 2003 edition is expected to be released mid-year. Two of the more significant changes are: the introduction of a requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation upon which Exploration Results are reported; and inclusion in the definition of a Competent Person of a reference to “Recognized Overseas Professional Organizations” being overseas professional organizations to which Competent Persons may belong for the purpose of preparing documentation for the submission of reports to the Australian Stock Exchange."

Sulphide concentrates may exhibit self-heating to various degrees during storage or shipping, the worst cases presenting a serious hazard from fire and SO2 emission. Based on measurements of heating rates on a wide variety of concentrate samples in a special apparatus, combined with field experience, a methodology has been developed which allows concentrates to be rated for their heating potential. This has proven to be very useful in practice, for example, in deciding on the need to take preventive measures. Oxidation under ambient conditions in the presence of moisture initiates heating locally within a stockpile. In the case of highly active materials, such as those that contain abundant pyrrhotite, heating may progress through three stages to temperatures well above 500°C. However, most concentrates show little or no propensity to self-heat. Heating rates were used to estimate values of the heat output, or self-heating capacity (in joules per gram), which sustains the process at each stage. Thermal data from differential scanning calorimetry are also reported. Variables which affect self-heating are discussed and an actual case of heating control on a stockpile by covering is described. A simple apparatus which can be used to simulate stockpiling conditions has been tested successfully and is proposed as a convenient test system.

As part of the EIS and permitting activities for the Pogo Mine in Alaska, a risk assessment study for the water management plan was carried out. The basis for the study was a site water volume and contaminant balance model. Probabilistic modeling was carried out using the @Risk Monte Carlo simulation package to investigate the frequency, quantity, and quality of discharges under varying assumptions. The results were used in discussions with regulatory officials as part of the permitting process for the project. The simulation allows probabilistic modeling of key environmental parameters based on input frequency distributions involving both quality and quantity of flow. When combined with predictions of water treatment plant capacities and removal efficiency, this was very useful for defining the likelihood of important regulatory outcomes. Based on the model, certain project modifications were made. Using the simulation as a basis, ongoing dialog with regulators led to consensus that all potential risks have been considered and mitigated for the Pogo Mine according to their likelihood and severity, and that regulatory requirements would be achieved. The paper describes the model and some of the applications for which it was used.
