This paper outlines a framework for ensuring the success of the implementation phase that follows research and development of new mining technologies and systems. It is based upon recent and past lessons learned that have demonstrated the critical challenges to effective technology transfer, which frequently receive inadequate attention within the culture of the mining business. The paper focuses on mining automation implementation challenges and then outlines a Roadmap which is proposed as an integrated framework to deal with the key aspects of people, process and technology. This framework is built upon: assembly of a Strategic Team to develop a Roadmap; fully understanding the business requirements of the technology initiative; defining Key Performance Indicators in a Balanced Score Card; performing a Stakeholder Analysis to identify the affected groups; and finally developing a master Project Plan to execute the Roadmap.

Electrodeposited copper of the 1860s was of unprecedented purity, although the profound significance of this achievement was not fully realised until the dawn of the electrical age a decade or so later. By the 1870s there were three somewhat large (4 to 4.5 tonnes Cu/day) electrolytic copper refineries in Germany based on J. B. Elkington’s process, first patented in the United Kingdom in 1865. More such refineries were planned throughout Europe. At the same time, copper output in the U.S.A. was starting to expand and with the spread of European electrolytic copper refining technology across the Atlantic, the door opened to major increases in North American output. The technology was first taken up in 1879 by James Douglas at the Chemical Copper Company in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, where he was Superintendent. Douglas was assisted in this pioneering work by Edward Weston. The copper refinery at the Chemical Copper Company was small, not unlike the first plants in Europe. The present authors contend that the electrolytic copper refinery at the Chemical Copper should be regarded as the first copper refinery in the United States. The Balbach Copper Refinery in New Jersey, which commenced operations in 1883 with an initial production of about 2 tonnes Cu/day, has been erroneously considered as the “first commercial refinery”; it rightly belongs in second place. The early developments at these plants are discussed in this paper. INTRODUCTION In the mid-1800s, the main uses for copper were as sheathing on the wooden sailing ships of the day to protect from marine growth, boiler components in locomotives and steam engines, along with some construction uses. Copper ores were generally smelted, and further fire-refined for market. The recovery of gold and silver, if present in payable amounts, was a slow and relatively expensive step. This situation regarding copper would change by the 1870s with advances in the generation and use of electricity. The introduction of the dynamo led to major developments in electrorefining. First demonstrated in principle by Faraday in 1831 (Faraday, 1832), the dynamo was subsequently adapted and further developed by J.S. Woolrich for electro-metallurgical applications in 1842 (Woolrich, 1842; Napier, 1845). It provided a new source of power with the unprecedented potential to significantly change the scale of metal production by electrometallurgy. Interestingly enough, copper would be needed for the electrical age just beginning. By 1869, advances in dynamo design offered relatively reliable large machines, which enabled J. B. Elkington in the United Kingdom to use the dynamo in the radically new Pembrey copper electrorefinery — the first copper electrorefinery in the world (Wraith, 2013). Initial production at Pembrey was small — in the range of 1 to 2 tonnes/day — while gold and silver were recovered more readily by the treatment of the slimes than with methods used hitherto.

While technical innovations may, generally, be seen as fast-moving and farreaching, these papers also show that changes in approach and thinking continue to be evaluated and implemented.The Forum paper co-authored by Roger Taplin of McCarthy Tétrault LLP and Marchand Snyman of Muratie Investments Pty Ltd. highlights the quite radical changes that have taken place in South Africa’s mining industry with the introduction of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002, in October of that year, together with the Broad-based Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry and the Mineral and Petroleum Royalty Bill of March 2003."

SMART, an association of surface mining companies formed in 1995 to develop a coordinated approach to technology development for the mining industry, has recognized the need for the establishment of a worldwide database that continuously collects mining equipment data and provides metrics related to productivity and cost. Under the auspices of SMART, Syncrude Canada, Suncor Energy and Albian Sands Energy (three oil sands mining operations located in northern Alberta) have established a pilot project for mine benchmarking. This presentation will include a review of the pilot progress including: ???Data gathering techniques: means of collection and storage, proposed practice for data control and normalization, access to data/reports and format for data. ???Reports/analyses for individuals, across groups, within the total industry pool and publicly. ???Security and confidentiality of information belonging to identified parties. ???Sharing of best practices among members. SMART has identified two key deliverables to ensure success of the project. First, data supplied from surface mines must be validated and normalized to common definitions and then analyzed to provide participating companies with regular reports that allow them to understand their position and resultant opportunities to achieve world-class performance. This model maintains granularity of the data for each operation that can then be recombined into standard comparisons or specific indices as required. The general categories of: operating delays, maintenance downtime, standby, and scheduled downtime, have been used to frame comparisons. Second, participating companies are looking to go behind the indices to identify and share best practices that distinguish particular operations. The spirit of cooperation between the companies involved in the pilot project is meant to be a model for future expansion of the benchmarking project.

It is the general belief that the coal deposits on Vancouver Island are extremely large, and easily available. Indeed, they are frequently described by prominent public men and by writers in the press as "illimitable" and "inexhaustible." It is well that the facts that have been established as a result of seventy years of surface prospecting, underground operations and extensive diamond-drilling in this coalfield should be disclosed. HISTORY The presence of coal on the coast of British Columbia was first made known by Dr. W. F. Tolmie in 183 5. This coal was brought to him by Indians from the north-east coast of Vancouver Island, probably from Suquash. In 1850 the existence of coal at Nanaimo was announced by Mr. ]. W. MacKay. Development was started in 1852, and coal was shipped before the close of 185 3. The first operations were carried on by the Hudson's Bay Company, who operated the mines until 1861, when they sold them to the Vancouver Coal Mining and Land Company. Practically all of the operations in the immediate vicinity of Nanaimo have been carried on by this Company and its successors. In 1869, Mr. Robert Dunsmuir discovered coal about five miles north-west of Nanaimo, at Wellington. The Welling-ton Colliery Company was organized, and began to produce coal from the Wellington mines in 1871, the coal being shipped from Departure bay. This colliery was a large producer for several years, but was finally closed in 1900.

"A method for determining the fineness of Au in electrum from the composition of fahlore coexisting with pyrite and chalcopyrite is presented. This method is based on previously published experimental brackets and activitycomposition models for electrum and fahlore, and it is potentially useful for defining temperatures of hydrothermal mineralization and retrograde evolution of precious metals deposits. The authors demonstrate that it successfully predicts compositions of electrum reported for this assemblage in the literature and illustrate its application for three gold-quartz vein deposits from the Coeur d’Alene mining district, Idaho, that are prospects of the New Jersey Mining Company, the Coleman vein, High-Grade prospect, and Silver Strand mine. Temperatures calculated from average electrum compositions estimated from gravity concentrates (molar Au/(Au+Ag) = 0.76-0.39) and from microprobe analyses of the fahlores (molar Ag/(Ag+Cu) = 0.039 ± 0.004, Zn/(Zn+Fe) = 0.57 ± 0.03, As/(As+Sb) = 0.23 ± 0.02) from the Coleman vein indicate that the electrums underwent retrograde re-equilibration to temperatures between about 80°C and 240°C, roughly 80°C below the temperature of hydrothermal mineralization and 10°C to 40°C above the temperature inferred for retrograde equilibration of Fe and Zn between sphalerite and fahlore. Fahlores from the High-Grade prospect [molar Ag/(Ag+Cu) = 0.009 ± 0.004, Zn/(Zn+Fe) = 0.55 ± 0.11, and As/(As+Sb) = 0.04 ± 0.03] and Silver Strand mineralized zone [molar Ag/(Ag+Cu) = 0.10 ± 0.04, Zn/(Zn+Fe) = 0.63 ± 0.02, and As/(As+Sb) = 0.06 ± 0.02] exhibit strong core to rim depletions in Ag due to retrograde operation of the reaction1/10Cu10Fe2Sb4S13 + Ag + FeS2 =Cu-fahlore electrum pyriteCuFeS2 + 1/10Ag10Fe2Sb4S13chalcopyrite Ag-fahlorewhich proceeds to the left with decreasing temperature. Electrum inclusions in arsenopyrite from the High-Grade prospect [molar Au/(Au+Ag) = 0.90 ± 0.02] define a minimum bound on the temperature of hydrothermal mineralization of 273°C, and the temperatureelectrum composition curve constructed for the most Ag-rich fahlore in the Silver Strand mine indicates that the fineness of its electrum is significantly less than in the other deposits."

The limestone reef reservoir at Swan Hills consists essentially of a "buildup" of successively smaller atoll-like layers. Precipitation of calcium carbonate within the lagoonal area of each layer essentially kept pace with growth of the outer organic lattice. Within the reef mass, six de-positional environments characterized by specific suites of fossils (or fossil fragments) and associated limestone textures are recognized as follows: ( 1) Aerated moderately agitated water of normal marine salinity (widespread shelf or submerged reef-built platform). Thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, "pancake" stroma-toporoids, crinoids, articulate bra-chiopods, rare rugose cup corals, and ostracods occurs in light gray-buff skeletal microgranular limestone of low permeability. (2) Semi-stagnant quiet water of normal marine salinity (leeward side of reef). Crinoids, articulate brachio-pods, rare thamnopora-type corals, Amphipora, pancake and bulbous stromatoporoids, rugose cup corals, ostracods and gastropods occur in impermeable dark brown argillaceous skeletal calcilutite with thin black bituminous shale beds and rare dark chert nodules.

Three types of reference gold catalysts, i.e., 3wt%Au/TiO2 (Au-Ti: Type A), and 0.3wt%Au/Fe2O3 on alumina beads (AUS: Type B), and 5wt%Au/Fe2O3 (Au-Fe: Type C), were produced in a test plant scale by Sud-Chemie Catalysts Japan, INC. under the licensing of AIST. To evaluate the validity of the preparation methods and conditions used for the reference samples, elemental analyses by ICP, particle size measurements by TEM, and catalytic activity measurements for the oxidation of CO and H2 over these catalysts were made. Gold catalysts can be prepared in a large scale of ca 400g for the Au-Ti and Au-Fe catalysts, 5 kg for the AUS catalyst with good reproducibility. It was confirmed that they were available for useful as the reference gold catalysts of World Gold Council.

"Competitive pressures dictate that the mining industry moves to larger mobile underground haulage equipment with more advanced equipment mechanization, higher levels of autonomous operation of machines, and longer periods between access by maintenance personnel. Since such new machines will of necessity be more complex than existing designs, machine reliability has become a key issue in progressing toward advanced mobile underground haulage equipment. Reliability and maintainability models of such equipment are practically non-existent in the literature. This paper addresses the issue of reliability and maintainability of mobile underground haulage equipment on two fronts: reliability modelling to enhance decision making for maintenance planning; and reliability simulation to enable evaluation of more rigorous production planning scenarios. A case study from a gold mine in the Chilean Andes is presented, for which reliability models of mobile underground haulage equipment, specifically load-hauldump vehicles and underground haul trucks, are developed, and a reliability-based simulation implemented. IntroductionMaintenance accounts for 20% to 35% of the overall operating budget for a typical underground operation, and hence represents the largest portion of the mine’s controllable operating costs (Cutifani et al., 1996; Campbell, 1997; Goddard, 1998). "Increasing energy costs in mineral processing is making it necessary for tighter controls over various parts of the concentrating process. Continuous monitoring and control of critical process streams can be easily performed by today's many computer systems. Indeed, the list of successful applications of computers to grinding and flotation control continues to grow. The day is rapidly approaching when the use of computers within concentrators for either process control or simply metallurgical accounting will no longer be a luxury, but a necessity. The benefits from such applications far out weight the initial investment.This paper describes the current application of a process control system at Brunswick Mining in north-eastern New Brunswick. Emphasis is placed on the control of a CuPb flotation circuit, and the benefits derived-from this control.No. 12 Cu-Pb Flotation: The complex nature of the Brunswick flotation process has been described else-where. 1,2,3 Four final concentrates are eventually produced, these being a Zn concentrate assaying 53% Zn, a 30% Pb concentrate, a 20% Cu concentrate, and a bulk Pb Zn concentrate assaying 35% Zn and 17% Pb. The Cu concentate, Pb concentrate, and bulk Pb Zn concentrate are all derived from a primary CuPb concentrate assaying 26% Pb, 11% Zn and 1.8% Cu.The No. 12 CuPb circuit produces approximately two thirds of the total primary CuPb concentrate. No. 12 ore, assaying 3.5% Pb, 9% Zn, 0.25% Cu and 100 g/tne silver, is ground in two parallel grinding circuits. Each line uses a 3.2 x 4.2 meter rod mill in closed circuit with two parallel 3.2 x 3.9 meter ball mills. Ball mill and rod mill discharges are classified in two stages of cycloning. The secondary cyclone overflow, or flotation feed, is controlled at 65% passing 37 microns."

"Nickel powder can be produced by the reduction of a nickel ammine complex solution by hydrogen at high temperature and pressure. To minimize the deposition of fine nickel on the surface of the reactor and other equipment, seed crystals are added to the initial solution to promote nucleation of the nickel powder. Such seed crystals catalyze the precipitation of the nickel particles on the surface of the seed and enhance grain growth. In this study, nickel nuclei were precipitated by the addition of a polymer to the nickel ammine complex solution, resulting in the production of nickel powder. Thus, we herein propose a model that explains the effect of the polymer in the precipitation of nickel nuclei.INTRODUCTIONNickel powder is commonly produced via a hydrometallurgical process from the hydrogen reduction of a solution containing a nickel ammine complex at high temperatures and pressures, and this process was commercialized in the 1950s by Sherritt Gordon (Sherritt International, Canada, Benson & Colvin,1973; The Staff, Research and Development Division, Sherritt Gordon Mines, Ltd., 1958).In the above transformation, upon the injection of hydrogen gas into the solution, nickel is reduced as outlined in Equation(1), ultimately resulting in the production of nickel powder.Ni(NH3)nSO4+ H2?Ni+ (NH4)2SO4+ (n-2)NH3(n:2–6)(1)In this process, seed crystals are added to the reactor to suppress the precipitation of fine nickel (scaling) and to enhance nickel reduction (Benson & Colvin, 1973; Mackiw, Lin & Kunda, 1957). More specifically, iron sulfate and a small amount of dispersant polymer are added, which leads to the formation of nuclei. Upon subsequent hydrogen reduction, the reduced nickel can then be deposited on the nuclei, allowing nickel particle growth to take place. However, this results in iron contamination in the final nickel product, and so the use of pure nickel as a seed crystal is desirable to produce high quality nickel powders."

The curve of coal production in Nova Scotia over the past forty years shows a definite maximum reached in 1913. Continued production to this maximum will require a greater tonnage per man-day, and this means there cannot be any increase in total man power used in the operations. There are still large reserves of coal but much of it will require washing or beneficiating to make a usable product. By-product recovery based on the present product ion is relatively satisfactory. Further development of secondary industries requires adequate markets for the bulk materials produced by the processing. It also requires access to other raw materials as well as markets for the principal product of the operations. Scientific investigation and research are needed to prove the quantity and value of lower grade or poorer quality coals, and methods for their recovery and utilization. Economics of further processing of present and future production must be investigated beforehand, if a successful development is to be assured. Such development cannot be expected largely to replace present markets. Production of coal for genera l use must continue to form the major function of the coal industry of the Province. Costs per ton must decrease, or subsidies or other assistance must increase, if the industry is to survive. Costs of investigation and research and costs of capital outlay for further development muse be met.

"Description and UseDischarge liners or pulp lifters as they are sometimes called are a trough type liner used at the discharge end of the mill where ground ore passes to the trunnion.There are basically two methods of discharging pulp. The First and most common is the overflow method. Here ground ore travels from the feed to the discharge end where it exits through the discharge trunnion in an overflowing manner, hence the name ""overflow"". (See Figure I) The second method of discharging pulp is the grate method. With this method you block-off the trunnion and hold the ore inside the mill for a longer period of time. This allows only the desired size of ore out of the mill. Ore passes through the grate liners, into the Vibrathane Discharge liner, and finally down to the trunnion. Greater control of the ore size results wit1 this method as compared to the overflow method and it also eliminates reclassifying and regrinding. "Titanium possesses an exceptional and wide-range resistance to chlorides and their compounds when compared to most corrosion-resistant engineering alloys (CRAs) used in the chemical process industry. This natural resistance to chlorides stems from titanium’s protective, tenacious, and readily rehealable titanium oxide surface film, which is chemically stable over a wide range of pH and redox potentials in aqueous environments. This passive film explains titanium’s elevated resistance to anodic pitting, crevice and stress corrosion, and erosion-corrosion in aqueous chloride environments.Guidelines for successful selection and application of industrial titanium alloys are derived from an extensive laboratory test database and more than forty years of industrial/chemical service experience. These guidelines are simplified, and alloy corrosion performance is assessed with respect to four basic aqueous chloride service categories where selection or consideration of titanium is highly merited. An overview of historical titanium alloy applications in chloride-rich environments in a wide variety of process industries substantiates their exceptional chloride tolerance. These industrial titanium alloys are cost-competitive with stainless steels and nickel alloys, readily commercially available, and routinely fabricated and welded in the shop and field via well-established methods."

"This paper discusses energy use and conservation in the primary copper industry and illustrates eco-efficiency considerations, using select examples of practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated primary copper producer and others in the industry that promote eco-efficiency. The World Council for Sustainable Business Development first publicized the concept of eco-efficiency at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. Eco-efficiency is a management concept linking environmental and economic performance and is aimed at generating added value for a business through, among other things, increased resource and energy conservation and reduced environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of the product or service. This concept differs from sustainable development in that focus is only on economic and environmental factors and does not include social considerations. In the metal mining and processing context, this added value can be realized by implementing practices that promote conservation of water and mineral resources, conservation of energy, minimization of waste, reduced emissions and effluents and increased recycling. The examples from the primary copper industry used to illustrate eco-efficiency considerations include: water and energy conservation in mineral processing, adoption of flash and bath smelting processes, emission reduction and process improvement associated with fire-refining, implementation of green chemistry in electrorefining, promoting product stewardship initiatives and fostering renewable energy project on disturbed mined lands.INTRODUCTION ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting And Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co-products. Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, molybdenum, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills, two leach, solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) plants and a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper refinery in Texas."

"Since 1994, Aur Ressources has operated Louvicourt mine, a zinc and copper mine close to Val d’Or, at a rate of 4300 t/d. Ever since the start-up of the plant, management has encouraged innovative approaches in reliability. The first of three papers will discuss the vibration monitoring program in place. The program will be described and two examples will be given: detection of a rolling bearing defect on a pinion driving the ball mill and identification of wear on the bearings of the flotation cells. Figures on the return on investment and the costs of a monitoring program will also be given.The second article will discuss the lubrication aspect. Since the establishment of a good monitoring and oil analyses, Louvicourt mine decreased its oil consumption by more than 38 000 L/yr. In addition, the company set up an oil regeneration system that restores the original properties of oil.The third article will cover the management aspect. Work organization as well as the management philosophy enabling the employes to push predictive technology to higher levels will be examined in detail. The key elements which made it possible for Louvicourt mine to position itself among world-class companies in the organization of maintenance will be discussed."

Due to the inherent limitations of current methods of disposal of end of life polymeric materials, avenues are researched towards developing alternative, environmentally friendly and economic recycling processes. Different polymeric materials (i.e. rubber, high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyethylene therephtalate (PET)), quite distinct in terms of chemical structure and composition, were considered in the present study as carbon resources in EAF steelmaking. Investigations were conducted in both laboratory and industrial scale steelmaking to assess the effectiveness of using these materials as carbon sources for slag foaming in EAF steelmaking. Slag foaming is important because it enhances furnace efficiency.

ABSTRACT This paper explores passive seismic measurement as an alternative, nonintrusive approach to conducting annual brake testing on surface mine sites. Dictated by the test site location, this evaluation adhered to the brake testing procedure as per British Columbia occupational health and safety regulations. Results showed excellent correlation to those reported via conventional practice: Comparing stopping distance, time, and velocity for the proposed instantaneous passive seismic versus conventional approaches, less than a 0.5% variance was evident. A viable alternative, the passive seismic approach, allowed an entire fleet of trucks to be sequentially evaluated for annual brake testing without disrupting operations by installing mechanical testing equipment.

"Recognition of the diamond potential of the Wawa subprovince was initially determined from regional data using a kimberlite model. The world’s largest stable Precambrian craton, the Superior Province, is considered to be favourable for the emplacement of diamondiferous kimberlite. The Wawa area is located near the intersection of intra-craton structures visible in the regional magnetic data.The Enigma project is located north of the town of Wawa in northern Ontario. From field evidence and background research, it became obvious that in the Wawa area there were at least two potentially diamond-hosting events, Archean lamprophyric volcaniclastics and Proterozoic kimberlites. The host lamprophyric rock does not contain the classical KIM signatures. However, to complicate the Enigma, stream sediment samples within 200 m of the diamond-bearing lamprophyre produced a typical suite of kimberlite indicator minerals.The micro- and macro-diamond content of the Wawa lamprophyric volcaniclastic rocks is typically 0.2 ct/t to 1 ct/t, although it can be higher locally. The economic diamond potential of these Archean dykes, sills and irregular lamprophyre bodies is still under-explored (Kaminsky, 2002, unpubl.). Oasis Diamond Exploration is currently exploring the area using geophysical, geochemical, and geological data."
