Conflicting claims and views on the priming of ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) are reviewed; certain fallacies and misconceptions are rectified. Optimum priming systems for a range of blasthole conditions are indicated. Moves towards optimum priming lead to reductions in the combined cost of drilling, blasting and handling the material. With shallow blastholes, two-point priming is rarely warranted. Best blasting results from single priming are usually obtained when the primer is located near, but not at, the bottom of the blasthole. As blast- hole depth increases, two-point priming becomes more reliable and effective than single priming. For two-point priming, primers should be located such that detonation waves in the ANFO collide at grade level or, if preferred, within a hard band in the burden. Where blastholes are very deep and/or strata variations can be appreciable, three or more spaced primers are often justified. The effectiveness of a primer varies with its detonation pressure, diameter and length. Primer properties influence the velocity of detonation (VOD) near the primer, but do not affect the final (steady-state) VOD in the ANFO. The process uses sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrate reagents as in conventional Harris refining plants, selectively removing the arsenic to the caustic phase at an operating temperature of 420-450¦C. A novel feature of the process concept is continuous treatment of loaded caustic slag for recovery of arsenic as a sandy crystal product suitable for further processing to arsenic trioxide. A large pilot plant was constructed and operated over a period of 3 years to develop materials handling techniques and equipment components and to prove the concept. Stable operations were achieved at equivalent capacities of 200 tonne/yr arsenic removal. The process is being considered in plans for expansion of bullion softening capacity at Port Pirie.

Legislative change has reformed the licensing process in Victoria. The Mineral Resources Development Act 1990 and the two stage system of licensing with the authority to commence work is discussed. A key part is the requirements of planning consent, being either an Environmental Effects Statement or the issue of a Planning Permit prior to the issue of an authority to commence work for mineral extraction. Examples of recent experience is discussed.

The principles, fields of application and equipment design concepts of several new approaches to continuous vacuum treatments of molten metals and alloys are discussed. Partic- ular attention is paid to the results of pilot plant tests evaluating a launder-in-tube method of 1. continuous production of refined zinc from a zinc-bearing lead produced in the lead splash condenser of the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF), and 2. continuous refining of crude cadmium. The former trials were not sufficiently encouraging to justify consideration of the process for commercial development. The applic- ation to cadmium upgrading gave very promising results; metal of 99.99 per cent purity was produced continuously at pilot scale (120 lb per hour) from crude metal containing 5.0 per cent Pb.

Big Bell Mine started experiencing relatively large mining related seismic events, and accompanying rockbursts, from February 1999. Twelve rockbursts damaged access development from February 1999 to June 2000, with severe damage extending for up to 100 m along footwall drives. Five seismic events associated with the rockbursts were recorded by the AGSO, measuring 1.9, 2.2, 1.7, 2.4 and 2.2 on the Richter scale. These events affected 485 and 460 footwall drives in August and November 1999 and 535 footwall drive in June 2000 (drive level nomenclature is equivalent to the depth below surface and RL). After the third event (July 1999) it was apparent that the seismicity was not a once-off phenomenon. This (sudden) onset of seismicity required management to implement a series of precautionary measures:to ensure the safety of the workforce, to maintain continuity of production, and to reduce rockburst damage rehabilitation. The measures included extended re-entry periods and exclusion zones in high-risk areas, improved rockburst resistant support systems in areas prone to damaging seismic activity and improved support systems in areas prone to shakedown damage. A full-scale minewide ISS seismic system was ordered in October 1999 and commissioned in February 2000. A portable eight-channel CSIR-Miningtek system was installed at short notice as an interim measure in August 1999. This CSIR system covered the northern producing stopes, where the majority of the rockbursts had occurred. The objective of the seismic monitoring was to monitor relative activity and to determine trends with regards to time and location. MAP3D numerical modelling was used to investigate the relationship between seismicity and various combinations of stress components to assess the relative seismic risk in both current and proposed working areas. This information is used to determine where and at what stage in the mining cycle the rockburst resistant support is required. Analysis of the seismicity has determined two distinct modes of seismicity û small-scale localised, high frequency events in high stress areas and larger events related to shear along previously intact foliation surfaces. This paper includes a summary of the seismic history, seismic data analysis, support system design, mine design adjustments and management action to minimise the effects of seismic activity at Big Bell Mine.

The evolution of the Oaky Creek mining complex provides a good example of the mining cycle in practice. Oaky Creek has been innovative in its choice of mining methods, with virtually the full range of coal mining methods having been used as workings have progressed down dip. The history of the mine is traced through its development (and ownership changes), progressive selection of mining methods as depths of cover to seams being mined have increased, and rehabilitation. This allows the different mining methods to be described and illustrates the concept of æwall-to-wall miningÆ.

Mt. Whaleback, the property of the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers, contains more than one thousand million long tons of high grade hema- tite averaging 64% Fe, ranging from 70%, the grade of absolutely pure hematite, to 54%. The ore occurs in the Dales Gorge and Joffre Members of the Brockman Iron Formation. The interbedded shale bands common in other orebodies occurring in these horizons are seldom more than a few inches thick and are commonly partially enriched to about-35% Fe. In the generally hard, massive hematite orebody, the gangue minerals tend to break preferentially to the fines, or -6 mm product, and for this reason it is of a somewhat lower grade than the lumpy product. The control of the chemical qualities is concentrated on the fines product for it has been found that maintaining the iron and alumina levels in this product ensures that all chemical specifications are met in both the lump and fines products. Physical qualities are monitored to ensure that the physical quali- ties of decrepitation and degradation of the lumpy product are maintained at levels accept able to the buyers.

The maintenance system for underground mobile equipment at Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. has been modified from that originally planned as a result of experience gained in operating the equipment.Downtime due to breakdowns has been reduced by improvement of vehicle servicing and overhaul procedures.Frequency of breakdowns can be reduced by training operating and maintenance personnel to a high standard, ensuring adequate numbers of tradesmen and supervisors, good maintenance facilities and communications, a well designed mine layout, and a comprehensive stock of spare parts.A maintenance and downtime summary is compiled for each four-week operating period and this is useful in highlighting particular problems where corrective action must be taken.

The proximity of the Town of Kalgoorlie to the Mount Charlotte mine necessitates that charge weight per delay be limited in order to keep surface vibration levels within acceptable limits and to reduce damage to underground workings. The mining system requires that large mass blasts must be used to recover pillars and therefore a large number of separate delays are needed. Until recently all blasting has been done electrically, fired from mains, but with the introduction of large diameter blastholes (165mm diameter) this firing system was inadequate. Various firing systems were considered, but after extensive trials a non-electric sequential firing system was chosen. This system fulfilled all criteria of blast design, was relatively straight forward in charging technique and had a very simple primary initiation system. Although initially designed for large mass blasts, the non-electric firing system is now used for all large hole blasting and in a simpler form for small (57mn diameter) holes.

This paper records the observations of faulting in the Black Star mine workings. By classifying the faults into two groups, i.e., strike faults and transverse faults, and by pointing out the differences between the groups and their effects on the silver-lead-zinc orebodies, a time relationship between the two groups of faults and the sulphide mineralisation is suggested.GENERAL GEOLOGY AND MINERALISATIONFolding and faulting are closely related to the mineralisation in the shales by silver-lead-zinc and iron sulphides.Commonly the various sulphides are fine-grained and closely associated with one another. However, exceptions do occur locally, where massive coarse galena, sphalerite, pyrite, and to a lesser extent chalcopyrite, have been observed singly or closely associated one with the other.In the main, the sulphide mineralisation forming the orebodies occurs as replacement of, and infilling along, the sheared bedding planes of the finely bedded shale host rock.The shales in general strike north-south with an average dip to 60° to the west; strong shearing along the bedding planes is evidenced by much slickensiding and slaty cleavage.Sequences of finely bedded shales of varying stratigraphic thicknesses alternate with very. massive beds, and it is in the more highly sheared thinner beds that the greatest concentration of sulphides occurs. The unmineraIised massive beds of shale, 11 in. up to 12 in. in thickness, occur singly or in groups between, and to a lesser extent. within, the orebodies. The massive beds resisted sulphide replacement and impart to the orebodies a most prominent banded structure.

Faster and more efficient methods of producing and refining iron and steel are imposing severe conditions on the refractory materials used to contain these metals in the molten state. In order to provide refractory linings which will give the desired service life and maintain unit availability at an economical level, it is necessary to appreciate the aggressive environment in which the refractories operate and determine the reaction mechanisms by which the refractories are destroyed. Only by such studies can the most suitable refractory or refractory combination for a particular unit be selected. Examples of refractories selection and reaction mechanisms are discussed for blast furnaces, BOS vessels, AOD vessels, steel ladles, vacuum degassing units and continuous casting.

Diamond exploration in Queensland is influenced by the South African approach modified by the discovery of diamonds in Lamproite in Western Australia. The current approach is to explore for Kimberlite and Lamproite bodies using indicator minerals dispersed by fluvial and colluvial processes. In the north-west, diamonds are derived from kimberlitic and lamproitic sources, whereas those in the coastal and subcoastal areas of eastern Queensland are associated with xenoliths included in rocks formed during Cainozoic volcanism. In these areas, sapphire is commonly associated with diamonds. In New South Wales diamonds in economic quantities occur in alkali basaltic intrusions and a subduction model has been proposed for these occurrences (Barrows et al, 1996). Exploration for diamonds in Australia increased following the discovery and exploitation of the Argyle mine. State geological surveys have produced digital information on the local occurrences of diamonds. As part of the Smart Mining Initiative (2006 - 2010), the Geological Survey of Queensland compiled a database and report on microdiamonds and diamond indicator minerals from open file company exploration data from 1968 to 2008 from the Department of Mines and EnergyÆs QDEX system. Most exploration in Queensland was conducted with exploration for other commodities. There is no commercial exploitation of diamonds in Queensland and, to date, only rare occurrences of microdiamonds. There is a regional difference in diamond occurrences with the kimberlitic and lamproitic models favoured for the north-western regions of the State and the subduction (S-type model) favoured for the eastern coastal zone linked to Cainozoic alkalic basaltic volcanism. Further diamond exploration is warranted in Cainozoic basalt provinces along the eastern coastal and near coastal regions and in the north-west of the state in conjunction with airborne geophysics flown as part of current Departmental Smart initiatives. The Ok Tedi porphyry copper and gold mine is an open-pit operation located within the Star Mountains in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and is situated near the headwaters of the Ok Tedi-Fly River system. The climate is equatorial sub-alpine with rainfall ranging from five to ten metres per year. Mining commenced in 1984 and to-date approximately 500 Mt of waste rock has been produced. A failing waste rock dump system operates whereby the dumps are eroded by tributary creeks of the Ok Tedi. It is estimated that approximately 250 Mt of waste is retained within the upper reaches of the river system. The waste rock comprises both potentially acid forming rock and limestone and to-date the overall waste has been acid consuming. However, the long-term mine plan identifies declining limestone production and hence an increasing risk of acid generation over the remaining years of the operation. A program was initiated to determine the net acid producing potential (NAPP) required (ie target NAPP) to minimise the risk of acid generation within the waste rock dumps. The results from this program provide guidelines for an operational target NAPP strategy to provide sufficient acid buffering across all size fractions in the waste rock dump for long-term ARD control. Implementation of this plan requires additional limestone to be mined and co-disposed with ROM waste rock.

Platinum Group metals have been known in New Zealand since the 1880's but not produced on a large scale. They have been neglected because their value was not appreciated rela- tive to gold and their value was often very low, reflecting demand, and because recovery was difficult compared with recovery of gold. With the rising price of most Platinum Group metals and the perfection of gravity and flota- tion recovery methods, recovery of platinum along with gold from alluvial deposits is more attractive. Platinum Group metals are known in several different environments in New Zealand, ranging from alluvial placer deposits to layered basic to ultrabasic intrusions and quartz veins. None of the known occurrences have been ade- quately prospected and there is a real possibi- lity of future discovery of important deposits. Several New Zealand based and at least two offshore resource companies are currently involved in exploration, prospecting or mining for Platinum Group metals in New Zealand.

The Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited currently produces 5.4 million tonnes of copper ore and 3.3 million tonnes of silver, lead and zinc ore annually. Of this, 5.1 million tonnes of copper ore and 2.2 million tonnes of silver-lead-zinc ore is produced by sublevel open stoping. This paper summarises the capabilities, operating practices and problems encountered with current production drilling practices used to drill sublevel open stopes at Mount Isa.

The Dampier Port Upgrade was completed in 2007 and is the largest project in Rio Tinto Iron Ore's expansion program. The project doubled Dampier Port's iron ore shipping capacity over a five year period. Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) was appointed by Rio Tinto as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) contractor to manage Phase A and Phase B of the Dampier Port Upgrade. The aim of the project was to increase the Dampier Port capacity from 74 to 140 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a). This increase in shipping capacity tripled the capacity of the Parker Point facility from 34 to 94 Mt/a, whilst the East Intercourse Island facility increased from 40 to 46 Mt/a. The Dampier port remained fully operational throughout construction and achieved record yearly export tonnages over the period of the project. The $US1.4B project was completed ahead of schedule, on budget and with an outstanding safety record. Significantly the project team set an industry benchmark by achieving five million man-hours Lost Time Injury (LTI) free. The project has been recognised by the Engineers Australia 2008 Western Australian Engineering Excellence awards as category winner in resources and the overall winner in WA, and went on to win a National Engineering Excellence award. This paper provides an overview of the EPCM project management and an insight into some of the key drivers that have delivered this outstanding project.

A field investigation by making use of the seismic method has been carried out in order to comprehend the mechanism of rockburst and gas outburst and their predictive measures. The seismometers were so arranged both on the surface and underground as to enclose a mining panel. Seismic signals detected by the array were recorded and processed by the 32-kwords computer system. At present the system is available for analysing the source location and Richter's scale of each event and for visualizing the distribution of seismic foci and released energy at any mining stage. The magnitude distribution of events can be regarded as a comparable index of the seismic activities among mining panels. An analysis of the spatial density distribution of seismic energy in the mining panel can be useful to distinguish a highly stressed zone from stress released areas. The energy released curve or the rate of energy release determined from seismic data is also a good indication of the seismicity.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are be- lieved to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteri stic 6180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the con- text of styles of mineralization.
