The Permian coal in the Muja Coal Measures of Collie Basin of Western Australia has a subdued lustre because of the fine laminations of lithotypes, and the dominance of dull and dull banded lithotypes with minor bright, bright banded and fusinous types. The maceral composition of the coal is variable, however the macerals of vitrinite and inertinite groups dominate and the exinite and mineral matter contents are low. The lithotypes have low concentrations of trace elements and the boron concentration is between 10 - 100 ppm recorded only from the dull lithotypes. On the basis of organic petrology, the inter-seam sediments, flora and the very low concentration of boron, the depositional environment postulated for the coal is braided, fluvial and fluvio-lacustrine with marked fluctuations in the water table. The low water table in the environment accounts for fusain and inertodetrinite in the coal.

The basic purpose of blast design is to produce rock in a size range which is within the requirements of the materials handling system. Once this is achieved, one would like to find the fragmentation which minimises total production costs. The former objective requires that fragmentation be assessed by some means, possibly as simple as counting the number of oversize rocks. To determine the 'optimum' fragmentation, however, accurate knowledge of the complete fragmentation distribution is required. The use of muckpile surface images to determine blast fragmentation is the only feasible technique when one does not want to disturb the production cycle; however, a number of problems exist with the use of images amongst which are determining size from a two-dimensional particle shape, estimating the fines which are missing due to image resolution, the size of a 'representative' sample, errors due to the distortion of particle images, etc This paper briefly describes methods of determining rock size from images and expands on the various errors which exist in assessing fragmentation by photographs. Methods to minimise and account for the errors are given, when possible.

The difference between a hypothetical and a theoretical approach is considered and the advantages in using a hypothesis is discussed. Virgin horizontal stresses play an important role in stabilising strata which bridge across an excavation, and reduces the tensile stresses which develop in a beam subjected to bending. Simple formulae are deduced for the bridging of a thick massive stratum under such conditions. At shallow depths, tensile failure on the upper side of the beam is the most likely cause of fracture, but below a certain depth this gives place to compressive failure on the underside, with the possible incidence of rock bumps. The presence of strong massive beds delay the onset of subsidence and may restrict the width of the subsidence trough. If the material involved in the caving is strong, this will reduce the final subsidence, especially at shallow depths. The British regulations for the control of aquifers and their dependence on the strain developed at the seabed are discussed. As an alternative, the concept of a disturbance factor is introduced to permit the consider- ation of aquifers at depth, leading to an explanation of the make of water on the first faces to be mined in the Selby Coalfield. 'Elie paper closes with a brief consideration of the different roles played by longwall face supports in the control of readily cavable strata, and the control of strong beds which hold up in the waste.

In the minerals industry numerous problems cannot be solved by conventional mathematical models owing to their complexity or a lack of phenomenological understanding. Neural networks provide one way of mapping the ill-defined relations between process variables and functions for such ill-defined problems. Consequently, processes such as leaching and froth flotation are mostly controlled in an empirical way by using rules of thumb. In addition, these processes involve so many independent and dependent variables that the plant operator finds it difficult to visualise or even observe a change in process conditions. The structure of froths developed on the surfaces of industrial scale froth flotation cells has a significant effect on both the grade and recovery of valuable minerals in the concentrate. Although these effects are well known at the process operational level, where considerable heuristic knowledge is available, little work has been reported on a detailed characterisation of the mechanisms and the visual characteristics of the surface froth. Recent results from an on-line observation of froths in several plants have proved the relationships between image features representing froth behaviour and metallurgical results. It will be shown how supervised and unsupervised neural nets are being used on operating plants to interpret computer vision data. In froth flotation the operator is supposed to visually observe process changes from the appearance of the froth, which is an unreasonable demand under industrial conditions. The system described here determines textural parameters on-line, and tracks the changes in process conditions via a Self-Organising Map (SOM) neural net. This monitoring system warns the operator about fluctuations in reagent addition, and gives an idea of the type of froth encountered. In another example, changes in the mineralogical characteristics of gold ores are represented on an SOM map, based on the diagnostic leaching behaviour of such ores.

NASA’s Artemis III mission is expected to return astronauts to the surface to explore and sample the lunar volatiles by 2026. These volatiles are anticipated to provide scientific insights as to how the Moon was created and economic value to off-Earth operations. These same volatiles can pose health implications to astronauts and Earth based personnel handling lunar regolith samples. Using Australian, USA and NASA airborne contaminant exposure limits and the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) measurements of lunar volatiles in the Cabeus crater ejecta, the minimum mass of lunar regolith that can be safely handled by humans on Earth and in spacecraft can be calculated. This analysis determined a 0.15 grams pure sample of Cabeus crater regolith within a cubic metre of air has enough volatiles to exceed safe working conditions, and 14.9 grams of pure Cabeus crater regolith per cubic metre of air can impact human life. The intent of this analysis is to assist safe handling and exposure calculations for the safe handling procedures of lunar regolith containing volatiles.

The manual gravimetric drying moisture determination methods currently employed by most mineral processing plants fail to provide timely and accurate information required for automatic control. The costs associated with transporting and handling concentrates represent a major portion of the overall treatment price. When considering the cash flow of a mining operation that is governed by both the smelter contract, with moisture penalties and the quantity and quality of the concentrates shipped, any tool that provides real-time feedback on the process is vital (Edwards, RP 1994). The introduction of an on-line moisture sensor would become a welcome addition to the process control field instrumentation package now applied. A novel on-line determination system for ore concentrate moisture content would replace the tedious manual procedure. Since the introduction of microelectronic-based control systems, operators have strived to reduce the treatment costs to the minimum. Therefore a representative and timely determination of on-line moisture content becomes vital for control set points and timely feedback. Reliable sensors have long been on the æwish listÆ of mineral processors since the problem has always been that you can only control what you can measure, (Konigsmann, 1990). Today, the task of moisture determination is still done by the classical technique of loss in weight utilising uncontrolled procedures. These same methods were introduced in the earliest base metal concentrators. Generally, it is acceptable to have ore concentrate moisture content vary within a range of seven to nine percent, but controlling the moisture content below eight percent is a difficult task with a manually controlled system. Many times, delays in manually achieving reliable feedback of the moisture content results in the moisture varying from five to twelve percent before corrective actions can be made. This paper first reviews the traditional and widely available methods for determining moisture content in granular materials by applying physical principals and properties to measure moisture content. All methods are in some form affected when employed on mineral ore concentrates. This paper introduces and describes a unique and promising novel on-line moisture sensor employed for mineral processing de-watering applications, which not only automates the tedious tasks but also results in reliable moisture feedback that can be used in the optimisation of the de-watering process equipment such as pressure or vacuum filters and fuel-fired driers. Finally, two measurement applications will be presented to indicate the usefulness and to summarise the measurement requirements for the proposed method of employing drag force and mechanical properties of the material itself to determine the moisture content. The commercial model of the equipment is described with the features and benefits to the users summarised.

This study introduces a new probabilistic approach to seismic stability analysis of embankments and slopes. The approach is based on Sarma's solution, which is modified through presentation of the seismic force by its horizontal and vertical components; i.e. the force may have an arbitrary inclination. The probabilistic modelling includes Monte Carlo simulation of the shear strength parameters of the soil mass, which are assumed to have a normal distribution. The probability of failure is determined based on the seismic co-efficient, which is treated as a random quantity. The probabilistic approach is illustrated through a solution of a numerical example from an opencast coal Mine.

An investigation was made into the mineralogical characteristics of the upper portions of the 650 and 750 copper lodes. The investigation was based on a comprehensive suite of geological specimens representing all types of mineralization encountered during mining until the end of 1954 and the chief aims of the investigation were to determine (a) the minerals present and their textures and associations, (b) the paragenetic sequence of deposition of minerals in the orebodies, (c) significant changes, if any, which could be found in the orebodies with depth, and (d) the nature and mode of occurrence of nickel in the ore. The general structure of the orebodies is outlined and their mineral composition given. 10 textures exhibited by the ore minerals are described and a paragenetic sequence of events in the formation of the copper orebodies is outlined. No decrease in the complexity of the sulphide mineral textures with depth could be seen and no evidence was found to suggest that the tenor of the ore would decrease with depth although some factors which may eventually limit the extent of the orebodies are noted. The mode of occurrence of minor elements in the orebodies is described. Notes on the occurrence of pyrite, aikinite and berthierite in the orebodies is given and the orebodies are considered to be identified with LiIidgren's mesothermal type of sulphide ore deposit in which considerable replacement of older by younger generations of sulphide minerals occurred.INTRODUCTIONA mineragraphic study was made by Stillwell and Edwards (1945) of a suite of specimens submitted by Mount Isa Mines Limited from the Mount Isa Black Star copper orebodies with a view to determining 1. the nature, extent and association of arsenic, antimonyand bismuth minerals, 2. the mode of occurrence of silver and 3. whether galena and sphalerite occurred in minute forms and below the sizes readily observed in hand specimens.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. The current acid drainage from this overburden is being collected and treated. From 2004 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A program of laboratory leach columns, field test pads and an instrumented full-scale dump was developed with the objective of defining scale up factors to quantify the acid and metal leaching rates and to evaluate the stockpile geochemistry and control options. The results of an ongoing seven year program have demonstrated feasible scale up between laboratory columns, field test pads and the trial dump in relation to material geochemistry and ARD evolution trends at Grasberg. The potentially acid forming waste types are highly reactive and maximum acid generation rate occurs within two to three years and that maximum copper release occurs within one to two years of exposure. The results also show that the net acid generation (NAG) test provides a good estimate for the potential acid load from overburden types. The chemistry, temperature and oxygen data from the trial dump suggest that oxidation and acid generation is occurring throughout the dump but at a decreasing mass rate with increasing distance from the toe of the dump. It is apparent that convection and/or advection are important mechanisms for the transport of oxygen into and within the dump. Key results and findings of the investigations carried out are presented and the implications of the findings for long-term ARD management at the Grasberg mine are outlined.

Successful heap leaching depends on three major factors: 1. Chemical conditions appropriate for the dissolution of the valuable metal; 2. Contact between the leach solution and the valuable metal particles; and 3. Movement of the leach solution through, and out of, the heap. Given that appropriate chemical conditions can be provided, and the individual particles have sufficient permeability to allow solute/solvent contact, the problem of getting the solution to and from the particles remains. Non-uniform percolation of solution throughout the heap, caused by the presence of fines, is a common problem which occurs, to some extent, with all heap leachable ore. The conventional solution to this problem is agglomeration, which involves the attachment of fine particles to larger particles, effectively modifying the size distribution by preventing the fine particles from acting on their own. While agglomeration must be considered as an extremely effective technique with virtually no limit to its application from a technical point of view, its application is limited by economic considerations. A new technique has been developed which is not only a low cost alternative to agglomeration, but also has the potential for enabling the application of low cost heap and vat leach techniques to a significantly wider range of ores than current practice would suggest. The new technique, known as Electrokinetic Leaching, utilises electro-osmotic flow to enhance percolation through the heap. This paper describes and presents results of the laboratory testing, pilot heap operation and commercial application of Electrokinetic Leaching of a low grade gold ore and a tailings deposit. Comparative cost analyses between conventional and the alternative processing techniques are presented.

Facies associations in the Okiduse Volcanics, woodlark island, suggest that two major volcanic centres erupted synchronously during the Middle Miocene. These centres are referred to as the Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre and the Uvarakoi Caldera. The Watou Mountain Eruptive Centre, centred on Boganuse Mountain in the Okiduse Range, was a typical, moderate-sized composite volcano (or stratovolcano). The seq-uence is readily divisible into lava (Boganuse lava unit), breccia (Nikuben breccia unit) and epiclastic (Talpas sandstone unit) dominant facies, typical of composite volcanoes. These facies girdle Boganuse Mountain and they are interpreted to represent vent, cone forming and ring plain associat-ions, respectively. These facies indicate a reconstructed volcano of approximately 1,700m height with a basal diameter of 7km. The presence of limited exposures of intrusive associated with the vent facies (Kuike'beimmicrodiorite) suggests that the volcano is only partially dissected. The Uvarakoi Caldera is a felsic volcanic system contrasting with the mafic Watou Mountain centre.

The mining and minerals industry has had and will undoubtedly continue to have a considerable impact on the development of this State. For the first 60 years of its history the colony of Western Australia made slow progress; its population in 1889 being only 43,000. However, as a-result of discovering gold at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie the Eastern Goldfields alone had a population of 25,000 by 1897. The income generated by the gold mining industry allowed the Premier of the day, Sir John Forrest, and his Government to support the proposal put forward by the State's Engineer in Chief, C.Y. O'Connor, to construct a pipeline to carry water from the Darling Ranges to Kalgoorlie ; a distance of 600 kilometres. The demand for people knowledgeable in the science and art of mineral exploitation also prompted the State Government to establish a School of Mines in the Goldfields in 1902, where it has remained ever since. The gold mines of this region have been a major source of employment for over 70 years and there is no doubt of the fact that their continued prosperity minimised the effect of the world recession on Western Australia in the 1930's.

While a per onnel location system is primarily used to check that nobody is left in the mine at firing time, it is also useful for contacting people, uch a foremen, shiftbosses and tradesmen, who travel over several mine levels during a shift. The system installed at The Zinc Corporation, Limited, Broken Hill, uses punched coded plastic identity tags, with "In" and "Out" tag readers on each level. When entering a level, the employee inserts his tag in the "In" reader, and when leaving, in the "Out" reader. Each reader is connected to a central computer which shows who is still in the mine and their location.The system has been used on 3 levels by 21 men for a trial period of 4 months. It ha proved reliable in an underground mining environment, and employee acceptance has been good.

The Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) skarn Cu-Au deposit is the deepest explored part of the Ertsberg East Skarn System extending from the surface at 4200 m elevation to the DMLZ at 2900 to 2600 m. The DMLZ is hosted in an upper Cretaceous to lower Tertiary siliciclastic and carbonate succession adjacent to the 3 Ma Ertsberg pluton. Much of the DMLZ ore is hosted by mixed assemblages of siliciclastic and dolomitised carbonate strata that have been altered to Mg-rich skarn assemblages. Unaltered equivalent strata from a 300 m cored interval in the Yellow Valley Syncline were characterised petrographically and representative samples were analysed for major element compositions. These stratigraphic and chemical units are interpreted to be responsible for the varying skarn lithologies within the DMLZ. The dominant prograde skarn assemblages are controlled by protolith composition, notably the relative abundance of quartz, dolomite, and calcite within the protolith. Models based on isochemical metamorphism of mixed assemblages of quartz and dolomite suggest that the formation of the forsterite-diopside dominant skarn assemblages resulted in the greatest amount of pore space increase. DMLZ Cu-Au concentrations were locally controlled by host lithology, with structural features providing fluid pathways that focused the mineralising fluids. Segmental tunnel linings are becoming more common in Australia. One current project employing a segmental lining is the City West Cable Tunnel (CWCT) in Sydney. The project has been commissioned by Energy Australia and is currently being constructed by Thiess Pty Ltd. The project includes 1.6 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven, segmentally lined tunnel. The majority of the CWCT will be excavated through Hawkesbury Sandstone. The tunnel is required to carry a 132 kV electrical circuit under SydneyÆs central business district (CBD), between Haymarket and Energy AustraliaÆs City North Substation on Sussex Street. The segmental lining has been designed as a 3.2 m internal diameter, 200 mm thick universal ring with six trapezoidal segments. The design and detailing of this segmental lining presents some noteworthy challenges, including exposure to saline groundwater, and the exclusive use of steel fibres for flexural and tensile concrete reinforcement. This paper describes some of the key elements of the segmental lining design. These include:the case for choosing segmental linings over other forms of tunnel construction;the major design checks required of a segmental lining including ground loading, hydrostatic loading, joint bearing, joint rotation, ram loading and the early strength lifting case;the benefits of using steel fibres over conventional steel reinforcement;the design approach used for steel fibre reinforced concrete;the application of 3D computer modelling in the design;the provision for components including connector dowels and gaskets;the design for passive fire resistance; andthe design for durability of steel fibre reinforced concrete in a saline environment. Segmental lining design requires the application of specialist design approaches. Input is required by the construction team, as the methods of demoulding, handling, transportation and installation impact on the lining design. As the segmental lining is functioning as immediate ground support and also a permanent lining, high standards of manufacture and construction quality control are required to ensure that the 100-year design life is met. The requirement for a watertight tunnel means that detailing and installation of the EPDM gaskets is of importance.

Increasing the upper particle size limit of flotation would allow operators to increase mill throughput, save operating costs, simplify flow sheets, and increase rate of return. However, coarse particle flotation is difficult for various reasons, of which bubble-particle detachment has been identified as the major limiting factor. In the present work, the process of bubble-particle detachment has been studied by directly measuring the forces required to detach air bubbles from hydrophobic solids. The measurements were conducted using a hanging balance apparatus. The measured forces were converted to detachment energies that can be compared with the work of adhesion, which in turn is a function of hydrophobicity, surface tension and contact area. The results were converted to detachment energies using the Young-Laplace equation for capillarity. In the present work, the solid surfaces were hydrophobised by coating them with octadecyltrichlorosilane and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The results show that bubble-particle detachment occurs in two steps. In the first step, air bubbles are deformed, while the three-phase contact (TPC) line is pinned, until contact angle reaches advancing angle. In the second step, the TPC line moves along the surface until solid/air interface is replaced by solid-liquid interface. In general, the energies of detachment measured in the second step are in good agreement with calculated work of adhesion. Thus, the energy required during the first step effectively represents an energy barrier for bubble-particle detachment. It has been found that the energy barrier varies with surface roughness and surface tension. The results of the present investigation suggest, therefore, that coarse particle flotation can be improved by control of particle hydrophobicity, surface roughness, and surface tension.

The Mt Todd Project is located 42 km northwest of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The identified mineral resource estimate for the Batman gold deposit is 66.7 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t). Proved and Probable Ore Reserves total 42.3 Mt grading 1.5 g/t. Orebody definition and reserve estimation is based on extensive percussion and diamond drilling. Exhaustive bias analysis comparing grades produced from different drilling techniques has been undertaken. Similarly, detailed check assaying programs have been run to validate grade data produced by commercial laboratories used during the exploratory drilling phase. Significant biases were established from both studies and appropriate 'corrections' were made to drillhole databases prior to final resource and reserve estimation. 3D geostatistical modelling has been utilised for resource and reserve estimation, with specialist consultants contracted for this work. This paper reviews the floor heave mechanisms in underground coal mine roadways. Previous studies have reported three main failure mechanisms: bearing capacity failure, buckling and swelling. The buckling failure has been observed where immediate floor strata are relatively strong and thinly bedded. On the contrary, the weak floor strata have been associated with both the bearing capacity failure and swelling mechanisms. The bearing capacity floor failures are likely to induce other types of instability such as pillar punching, tensile failure of pillar, roof fall and subsidence as well as floor heave. Despite a considerable amount of research, predicting the magnitude, location and timing of floor deformation is challenging with current state of knowledge. A positive displacement pump is being dev eloped for pipeline transportation of coking coal to a -50 mm export specification, at a con- centration and velocity which will allow trans- portation in the plug flow region, minimising degradation of the particle structure, and pipe= line friction losses which will be lower than with turbulent or laminar flow. Pump operation is by hydraulic powered free pistons in a rota- ting cylinder block, with cylinders overlapped by stationary inlet and discharge ports in a water lubricated and sealed rotary valve. Before this development coking coal was not considered suitable for transportation in slurry form, for the valves in the double act- ing duplex piston pumps used for slurry pipe- lines, cannot be divorced from the slurry and require that the solid material must be reduced to a fines'consistency before introduction into the pump suction. The hydraulic transportation of 10 million tonnes of -50 mm coking coal, 50 km from the Bargo area west of the escarpment to an offshore shiploader at Port Kembla is feasible. Study shows that economic factors alone would dictate that the development of a pumping system for long distance transportation of coking coal is necessary. The necessity for good management and economic working in our mines and ore-dressing sheds is impressed upon us by the present low prices of all our metals. Silver, lead, copper, and tin have all suffered a heavy decline during the last six or twelve months, and many mines have been shut down simply on account of the low market value of the ore produced. After fully considering the position of the mining industry. I am convinced that considerable improvements will have to be made to make it as prosperous as it ought to be. The most obvious of these improvements are good management, good machinery, and as little interference by directors as possible. If these conditions are insisted upon and carried out efficielltly a poor mine may have a chance to weather the storm.There is no doubt that the present depression is the refilult of over-speculation and general loss of confidence by which the whole commercial system has been affected, and every branch has suffered more or less, mining not excepted. It has suffered heavy losses in the past, and the future is not over bright we are, therefore, compelled to be careful in everything by which mining is affected and savings can be secured.
