A re-evaluation of the Hampton Boulder prospect in the early eighties resulted in a decision to proceed with mine development in December 1985. A 500 000 tpa gold treatment plant was commissioned in December 1986. The treatment facility was expanded to 1 600 000 tpa in July 1988. A tailings treatment plant to improve recoveries from harder gold bearing sulphide ores was built in December 1990. The development of an underground mine in 1991 meant that a source of sand for backfill was required. A sands plant to fulfil this requirement was commissioned during November 1991.As of June 1992 a total of 7 710 487 tonnes of ore have been treated through the New Celebration gold plant. Total gold production from inception of the new mine until June 1992 is 545 470 ounces obtained at an average recovery of 90.1 per cent from an average gold head grade of 2.4 g/t. The combined quoted ore reserves at the end of December 1991 was 14Mt grading 1.8 g/t gold

As an indication of the overall quality for the three periods the expected run of mine ashes are given. Operating Period R.O.M. Quality Years 1 - 4 22.0% Ash (db) Years 5 - 14 18.8% Ash (db) Years 15 - 20 17.3% Ash (db) The size distribution of the coal was found to be generally as predicted in the 1980 study. However the ash, particularly in the smaller fractions, was found to be higher due to the previously mentioned friable nature of contaminant material. Following evaluation of this additional information, the proposed washery design was reconsidered. Three basic process schemes were examined. 1. A jig with two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for treatment of three different size ranges. 2. A heavy medium vessel, two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for the different size fractions. 3. A jig for initial treatment of the total feed (that is all sizes) with single-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for rewashing of the intermediate and smaller size Fractions.

A group of stratabound-stratiform Fe-Ba-Zn-Pb-Ag deposits within the La Minita mining district of Michoacan, southwest Mexico have been investigated. The results of the study show that these deposits were generated around submarine hot-springs issuing in a Cretaceous island-arc environment. The exhalative mineralization, which is both epigenetic and syngenetic in character, was developed above fault-systems which constituted the loci of both volcanism and subsequent hydrothermal systems.Fluid inclusion data suggest two hydrothermal events during ore mineralization, one at 240¦C and the other at 161 to 205¦C, with salinities between 2.1 and 12.8 wt.% NaCl equivalent. Stable isotope data support a marine origin for the ore-fluids, as well as, for carbon and sulfur. Strontium isotope data suggest that Sr in the barites was extracted from the volcanics and limestones by circulating seawater. The ore-depositional environment was one of shallow, sub-tropical marine character, where mineralization was in part geochemically controlled by carbonate reefal facies within the volcanic/pyroclastic suite.

The effects of changes in sintering bed height, coke fuel, suction and basicity on sinter productivity, physical strength and mineralogy were determined. It was found that, for a given iron ore, there is a narrow -coke range which maximises sinter strength, irrespective of bed height (in the range 300 to 500 mm) or basicity (in the range 1.2 to 2.2). Increases in bed height, at a constant coke level, improved the physical strength of the sinter. Productivity increases were obtained by increasing the sintering suction but, at coke levels other than the optimum, these *ere somewhat offset by the decrease in sinter physical strength. At basicities higher than 1.2 (i.e. 1.6, 1.8 and 2.2) there was a narrowing of'the size range of product sinter, with a decrease in the percentage of top size material, and a decrease in the amount of fines produced. Changes in coke, bed height and basicity exert major effects on sinter mineralogy, while the Nagoya index was mainly influenced by cote and bed height Changes.

In an earlier paper(l) details of a laboratory method of extracting and separating tantalum and columbium oxides from tantalite have been given. In view of the fact that Australia may have need to be self sufficient in this field it was decided to erect a pilot plant for the production of tantalum oxide in the Metallurgy School, University of Melbourne. The plant was designed for treating about 40 lb. of ore in a batch over a period of two weeks, although; because of the sectionalized nature of the process, the capacity of the plant was 40 lb. ore per week.Australia is fortunate in possessing some very rich tantalite and columbite deposits, particularly in the Pilbara District in Western Australia. The ore used in this work was obtained from a small but high grade deposit near Greenbushes, Western Australia, and consisted of lumps, weighing up to 8 lb. each, of almost pure ferro-tantalite with occasional thin veins of the very' rare' mineral stibiotantalite.The main constituents were:

Bridging of production stopes in narrow vein gold deposits contributes to significant financial losses and production delays. Bridging is caused when underbreak in the stope production blast occurs, resulting in less than the designed stope blast volume breaking out during blasting. Jundee Operations in the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia extracts ore from its expansive narrow vein orebodies utilising longhole open stoping. In 2006 it experienced bridging in ten panels, or 8.77 per cent of all panels, as well as multiple bridging in 30 per cent of these bridged panels. The Jundee orebodies are west dipping with the bridged panels dipping between 44¦ and 62¦. This paper examines some solutions from the drill and blast design perspective to minimise bridging occurrences. It was found that the then current drill patterns and number of holes were adequate from a longhole stope design perspective. However, changes to the blasting design, specifically modifications to the blast delay initiation sequencing, primer positioning and blasthole dump combined with timely stope surveying and back analysis, were implemented with the aim of preventing bridging in this narrow vein operation.

Questions of sampling precision and accuracy affect every process plant in differing ways and to differing extents. To address these perceived issues, chemists, metallurgists and engineers are often asked to check their results to confirm their reliability. However, it is not possible to achieve the level of detail required to check every sample, especially if the event has already occurred. No operation has the resources to frequently sample every point in the process for the purpose of verification.One way to address this scenario is by generating a sufficiently detailed comparative data set from a dynamic mass balance simulation of the processing plant. This mass balance uses both sample and plant instrument data to model every flow, while also taking inventory changes and process chemistry into account.The mass balance data can be used to identify any bias present in plant sampling and analysis. It can also be used to verify any unexpected assay results by taking a holistic view of the process. Improving the precision and accuracy of sampling data helps support operational decision-?making and understanding. Geological modelling provides a means of spatially representing the three dimensional distribution of geological information to downstream stakeholders. The geologist completing the modelling work intimately understands the varying degrees of confidence, assumptions and extrapolation required to honour the data. Geological models are often taken and used by stakeholders without fully understanding this modelling process. This can lead to confusion amongst stakeholders when the geological model shows variable reconciliation. A method for visually communicating the confidence of the spatial distribution of geological models has been created by the Rio Tinto Iron Ore structural geology group for use primarily in geotechnical engineering investigations. A numeric confidence rating is assigned to each geological data point used in the creation of a geological surface. This is based on data type, collection method and reliability to indicate potential error in distance from its modelled location. In regions of sparse data, confidence ratings are inserted based upon the geologistÆs experience and knowledge of the geology, whereas mapped geological contacts or drill hole intersections are assigned a higher confidence rating. A regular grid of points is registered to the geological surface and each of these grid points is assigned a confidence rating using an inverse distance weighting using a nearest neighbour approach. The resulting grid is colour coded according to the confidence rating to provide a visual representation of the variable confidence of the geological surface in three dimensions. Subjectivity and bias from the geologist is minimised by critically analysing the input geological data and then applying this methodology to represent the confidence in the spatial characteristics of geological models. Understanding of this confidence enables mining professionals to make informed decisions and identify areas that require further geological investigative work. The design of crawler-mounted conveyor belts installed for the handling of brown coal in open cuts is described.INTRODUCTIONThe State Electricity Commission of Victoria operates two brown coal open cuts at Yallourn, Victoria. The larger of these cuts produces n million tons per year of brown coal containing 67 per cent. moisture, and the smaller, at Yallourn North, produces 1-1 million tons of coal, with a moisture content of 50 per cent. A further open cut at Morwell with projected output of 9-10 million tons per year is in the course of development. In the larger Yallourn open cut coal is excavated by means of conventional bucket chain and bucket wheel dredgers and transport is by electric locomotives and saddle bottom trucks running on 90 cm. gauge railway tracks. At Yallourn North, coal until recently has been largely won by 3i and 5 cu. yd. electric shovels and transported by large diesel-enginedmotor trucks. A geometallurgical model is currently built in two different ways. The first and the most common way relies on geometallurgical testing, where a large number of samples are analysed for metallurgical response using small-scale laboratory tests, eg Davis tube testing. The second, mineralogical approach focuses on collecting mineralogical information over the orebody and building the metallurgical model based on mineralogy. At Lules University of Technology, Sweden, the latter method has been adopted and taken further in four ongoing PhD studies. The geological model gives modal composition by the help of element-to-mineral conversion and Rietveld X-ray diffraction. Texturally, the orebody is divided into different archetypes, and liberation measurements for each of them are carried out in processing fineness using IncaMineral, a SEM-based technique. The grindability and liberation spectrum of any given geological unit (sample, ore block, domain) are extrapolated from the archetypes. The process model is taken into a liberation level by mass balancing selected metallurgical tests using the particle tracking technique. The approach is general and can be applied to any type of ores. Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.

The two major massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of southern NSW, Captains Flat and Woodlawn, differ from classical Kuroko deposits in several ways, e.g. they lie on the flanks of felsic volcanic piles in volcano-sedimentary marine sequences, are relatively thin and large compared to individual Kuroko deposits, show prominent banding in lead-zinc ore, and contain arsenopyrite. Qualified stuctural and stratigraphic correlations of the various fault-bounded remnant Silurian sequences that host these deposits provide the basis for a new interpretation of the regional geological setting that also differs from that of the Kuroko deposits (Ohmoto, Tanimura, Date, Takahashi, 1983), and sheds further light on the distribution of volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits in the Silurian rocks of NSW.

The role of flotation columns in comparison with conventional mechanical flotation cells is discussed under the scenario of Brazilian flotation technology. All iron ore concentrator circuits commissioned since 1990 incorporated column only flotation technology in rougher, cleaner, scavenger configuration. Columns were also added to existing circuits, especially at the cleaner stage. Columns were also incorporated to phosphate ore flotation circuits operating mechanical cells. In two phosphate concentrators, columns substituted for all mechanical cells. Columns perform the cleaning stage in a large sulfide copper concentrator, following rougher flotation in tank cells. Scavenger of the cleaner tailings is performed in tank cells at this plant. Other ores that are concentrated in flotation columns include graphite, talc, lead-zinc sulfide, and a zinc hydrometallurgical residue for silver recovery.

"'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016. One of the major changes in the resource industry in the nineties has been the re-internationalisation of the industry. The history of the resource business has been one of companies from the developed world utilising the cash flows from their operations to explore and develop mines in less developed regions of the world. This resource development has progressively generated wealth and economic development, which in turn, has led to a new generation of exploration and mining projects. In South America, Chile had led the way in a mining resurgence, now closely followed by Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Peru. Although Chile has long had a significant copper mining industry, the pre-nationalisation phase was driven by American capital; the current phase has been spearheaded by R.T.Z. - B.H.P. at Escondida with Canadian junior companies, in particular, providing major speculative impetus. The Australian junior companies have not been significant in South America.

The world is becoming an increasingly complex environment to operate within. Adoption and evolution of technology is occurring at a rapid pace and operating spaces are growing in interconnectedness and interdependency. In mining this is evidenced by the large-scale adoption of autonomous machinery, intelligent systems, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and robotics to realise benefits in optimisation, productivity, and safety. To enable continual delivery and growth in operational performance, and to realise the aforementioned benefits, a new approach for managing mining and metals is required (Mining Review Africa, 2023). This means that an already talent constrained workforce must learn to manage the complexity inherent, evolving, and growing in the environment (Abenov et al, 2023). A key skill that needs to be further developed and deployed to combat these challenges and to enable robust problem solving is that of systems thinking, which is already practiced in pockets within the mining industry. Experience and learning can be leveraged from other industries and their application of systems thinking to ensure that focus is maintained on areas where the benefits from which will be optimised. With targeted application, a workforce capable of effective systems thinking can be the catalyst to optimisation across mining organisations.

The Great Artesian Basin (the Basin) is a large aquifer system underlying more than 20 per cent of continental Australia and most of Queensland. The aquifers of the Basin are an important water source for many industries, including the mining sector. The Queensland Great Artesian Basin Water Resource Plan (the Plan) was released in March 2006. The Plan provides a framework for the long- term holistic management of the aquifers in the Queensland Section of the Basin, in a manner that is consistent with the strategic management plan for the Basin as a whole. The paper describes the Basin and summarises trends in the demand for water in the Queensland section of the Basin. It describes the broad framework for management of the Basin by the individual Australian states, as well as the planning entitlement framework for water resource management in Queensland. The paper discusses the content of the Plan. This includes: the division of the aquifers into management areas and management units for management purposes, provision for protection of the flow of water to springs, limits on further allocating water, provision for a competitive process for access to new water and provision for water trading. Under the Queensland planning and entitlement system a resource operations plan is prepared to specify operational arrangements to implement a water resource plan. A resource operation plan for the basin is expected to be finalised before the end of 2006. The paper summarises the likely content of the plan.

The lower levels at the CSA Mine have been developed to mine reserves between theNo.7 level and No.9 level.Work on major excavations for the project began during 1982 with the develop-ment of the crusher chamber, on No.9 level. The brows and walls were pre-dowelled to improve stability before mining by mass blasting techniques.At the same time work commenced on theextension of No.2 Shaft from No.7 level toNo.11 level. The shaft was stripped, using hand held drilling, to a raise bored holeand concrete lined to a diameter of 5.5 metres. Plats were developed at No.8 level, No.9level and the loading station.

Mineral processing plants require a storage buffer to bridge differences in production rates between mining and processing. Where coarse ores are processed, such as coal or hard rock, this buffer may be an ore stockpile or silo. For wet-mining processes, eg dredging or hydraulic mining, or where fine ores are slurried close to the mining face, a surge-bin is used to contain the plant feed and smooth out the variations in mining rates. These bins have gradually evolved from simple storage vessels to units that are now frequently part of the mineral separation process itself, such as providing a desliming function to remove deleterious ultrafine gangue. This feed conditioning is often essential to achieve the levels of plant performance required in times of declining ore grades and or where inherent ore characteristics make separations harder to achieve. To achieve these dual roles requires careful consideration of bin design factors such as geometry and lining selection and increased use of instrumentation and advanced, or remotely supervised, control systems. All this ensures they provide capacity to smooth out variations in mining rates and guarantees that when conditioning ores or adjusting slurry densities ahead of the plant it is achieved without loss of valuable minerals. This paper examines the evolution of the modern surge-bin from a simple, so called, constant density tank with its inherent mass-flow compromises, limited feed preparation and beneficiation abilities, and footprint penalty, to a current state-of-the-art surge-bin, the LFCU, with a control system which provides demonstrable steady outputs, while conditioning and in some cases beneficiating the ROM material and all from a highly compact unit. It further discusses their use in other applications around the world, for example providing the necessary security for long distant high-density pumping systems; constant high density, low water usage, tailings disposal pipelines and high capacity ultrafine iron ore beneficiation.

There is much debate on the Competent Persons qualifying criteria for providing classified resource estimates for public reporting. The CRIRSCO family of codes including the JORC Code, SAMREC, PERC and NI43–101, require Competent Persons to have at least five years ‘relevant’ experience and belong to professional bodies. These codes provide further, albeit vague, guidelines to assist individuals with their personal decision to take on the mantle of ‘Competent Person’. There is a risk, however, that these qualifying criteria can result in ill-prepared Competent Persons whose actions and recommendations would undermine their own reputation and that of the organisations that employ them; the integrity of the profession and the principles based reporting systems; as well as the stability of stock markets that rely on these estimates.Based on doctoral study on the development of professional competency within the mining industry, this paper presents an evaluation of the suitability of the current qualifying criteria as well as an analysis of alternative criteria. The research included a series of interviews with industry experts and an online survey of resource geologists. Semi-structured interviews provided a sense of experts’ expectations and interpretation of the current definition of ‘Competent Person’. The comprehensive online survey included a self-assessment, a series of situational questions designed to evaluate responses to typical resource geology scenarios and a set of open-ended questions relating to factors contributing to competency development.A summary of the data analysis, interpretation of the results and a set of recommendations for revised ‘Competent Person’ qualifying criteria are presented. This paper contributes to the conversation on what makes a person suitably qualified to report classified resource estimates and provides practical targets that can be used in the professional development of resource geologists.CITATION:Coombes, J, 2014.
