There are many technologies available today in terms of fire and life safety in road tunnels. So many in fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for clients and contractors alike to determine what they want and what they need. From a clientÆs perspective, fire and life safety is about protection to its infrastructure and to the public at large. Conversely, the contractor is looking to meet its æfit for purposeÆ or ædeem to complyÆ requirements in the most economic and practicable way. Practices regarding fire and life safety in road tunnels have undergone a degree of transformation during the last decade or more throughout the world. This transformation has largely been driven by a series of catastrophic accidents such as the major fires in Europe including the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Saint-Gothard Tunnel, and now most recently in the CityLink Tunnels in Melbourne. International guidelines produced by organisations such as the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC), the European Union, the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) and the US National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA) now provide clients, owners and designers with the tools required to define and specify the required fire and life safety systems in road tunnels. The majority of these tools are based on risk assessment and risk management. Recent road tunnel projects within Australia, however, have not referred solely to such guidelines. Clients have opted to prescribe different or additional fire and life safety requirements within the projectÆs technical specification documentation (project requirements), leaving designers and contractors with little room to implement alternatives or substitutions. Further, these project requirements are largely dictated by practice established on previous road tunnel projects within Australia. This paper looks at the current international guidelines and practices and undertakes a comparison with the EastLink tunnels in Melbourne and other road tunnels within Australia and makes assessment on whether Australian methods are the most appropriate for clients and contractors alike. Focus is directed to the key elements of fire and life safety such as:traffic envelope, barrier arrangements and emergency walkway provisions;deluge systems;drainage systems;fire rating requirements;tunnel ventilation systems;cross passage provisions;fire safety assessment;critical intelligence systems including help phones, CCTV, incident detection, tunnel signage, etc; andexternal tunnel control systems.

Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. The Tennant Creek goldfield is situated in the Northern Territory, 360 miles north of Alice Springs, or a tot~l distance of 1,300 miles north of Adelaide, and 600 miles south of Darwin. The auriferous area extends 20 miles north and south by 50 miles east and west. The overland telegraph line and the AIice Springs-Darwin road pass through the centre of the field.HISTORY, PRODUCTIONThe country comprising the goldfield was traversed by J. MacDouall Stuart between 1859 and 1861 in the course of his last three exploring expeditions, which terminated respectively at Attack Creek, Newcastle Waters and at the mouth of the Adelaide River. The explorer named Tennant Creek and also Mount Samuel, on which mining operations are now in progress. The overland telegraph line was completed in 1872 and a relaying station established eight miles north of the site of the present township. There was no other settlement in the adjacent country prior to the opening up of the goldfield.Gold was discovered in 1926 on what is known as the Great Northern lease, three miles north of the township. The field was remote; the nearest plant at which gold ore could be treated was at Peterborough, in South Australia, 1,186 miles distant, and it was not until 1932 that the development of the field actively commenced.The production of the field from its inception to December 31, 1939, was 57,895 QZ. of gold, valued at £522,000, recovered from 61,793 long tons of ore, won from 98 mines. In 1940 seven of these mines had reached depths between 100 ft. and 230 ft., the workings of the majority being less than 60 ft. below surface.TOPOGRAPHY, WATERThe country is traversed by parallel and sub-parallel lines of hills trending east and west and rising to altitudes varying from 50 ft. to 100 ft. above the intervening valleys. The low ranges and isolated hills owe their survival to the resistance offered by their indurated, harder rocks to erosion which has removed the softer intervening formations. Their elevation and area depend to a considerable extent upon the presence of; and, the size of, the more or less exposed haematite formations, or are due to the influence of extensive siliceous dykes which traverse the locality.Watercourses head from the hills and either flood out on the flats within a short distance, or in a few cases follow longer courses to the northward. The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. IN the recent monograph on Broken Hill, N.S.W., by E. C. Andrews,* two independent petrological reports appear as Appendices 1 and n, by W. R. Browne and F. L. Stillwell respectively. In these considerable differences of opinion occur. Andrews contributes to some of the questions at issue, but no analytical review of the differences appears in the body of the report. Their development may invite question, and the following notes have been prepared partly in explanation and partly as a summary of some of the divergences. The soope of Browne's report extends over the whole district of Broken Hill, while Stillwell's deals with the rocks within 25 chains of the main lode. The more difficult and important rock-types occur in both areas, raising similar questions. In both cases observations extended beyond the limits of the prescribed areas. Broadly, Browne faces his problem as a study of a series of primary igneous rooks, acid and basio, whioh are intrusive into a series of sillimanite gneisses. The development of the sillimanite gneisses is regarded as belonging to an earlier period than the intrusion of the igneous rooks, while the gneissio structures of the latter are features which are incidental to their orystallization, and are not acquired subsequent to their consolidation. He finally produoes a picture in which his views of igneous injection and differentiation takes a prominent place. One direct result is the claim that three separate periods of metamorphism have oocurred in the Broken Hill area. Stillwell primarily examines the rooks as schists and gneisses since their present dominating features have been acquired during metamorphism. The effort is made to understand suoh differences as might arise from differing conditions of metamorphism upon rocks of similar and different oonstitution. The aim is to divest the rocks of those oharaoters which are due to metamorphism before approaching the questions of intrusive relatio'nships between igneous rocks andsediments.

A desulfurised tailings cover was installed at the Detour Lake Mine in Ontario, Canada, to reduce oxygen penetration into the underlying sulfidic tailings. The cover ranges from one to 1.5 m in thickness and was intended to maintain high water saturation to reduce oxygen diffusion and consume oxygen by oxidation of the residual sulfide minerals. The tailings impoundment was instrumented to measure climatic parameters, water levels and water content profiles within the tailings and single-layer cover. One year of monitoring data was collected. Additional tailings samples were obtained for geotechnical and geochemical characterisation. The average grain size of the cover material was found to be coarser than the underlying tailings. Monitoring also indicated that air entry values of the cover material were lower than the tailings. Numerical modelling was conducted on the cover to predict water content profiles under varying climate conditions together with the depth of oxygen penetration and diffusive oxygen fluxes. Estimates of the diffusion coefficient and kinetic oxidation rates from field data compared well with values obtained by laboratory measurements. Numerical simulations indicate water saturations of less than 85 per cent can be expected under varying climate conditions. Predicted oxygen flux rates through the desulfurised cover over tailings with high acid potential indicate low flux rates reaching these tailings due to either consumption of oxygen by residual sulfur within the cover or saturation of the underlying tailings.

In November, 1975, Aberdare North colliery was sealed at the surface to extinguish an open fire underground.The fire had developed from a spontaneous heating in one of the open goaf areas of the mine.The mine was re-entered with normal ventilation methods following the isolation of the working district containing the fire. The isolation was accomplished by remotely sealing the open roadways with lly ash emplaced through boreholes from the surface. A subsequent re-entry operation similarly closed the roadways close to the fire and enabled the re-opening of the sealed district.Most of the mine and the underground equipment was recovered after clearing of numerous falls and production recommenced on 25th October, 1976.

Oceanic subduction-related volcanic frontal arcs extend over 20 000 km within the western Pacific basin and over 21 500 km worldwide, yet they remain largely unexplored with respect to active seafloor mineralization. Systematic exploration of 26 major submarine volcanoes along ~840 km of the Kermadec arc northeast of New Zealand has documented ten (39 per cent) as being hydrothermally active. This frequency of venting is comparable to that on slow-to-moderate rate spreading mid-ocean ridges, which comprise ~80 per cent of the 60 000 km-long global system of spreading centers. The chemistry of fluids discharged from the Kermadec arc volcanoes is moderated by magmatic components in both the gaseous (CO2 + SO2-H2S) and liquid (Fe) phases at very high concentration.The high frequency of venting coupled with chemically rich discharge discovered during this first systematic survey of any arc system forecasts submarine arcs as being important sources of chemicals to the oceans and as potentially lucrative exploration sites for seafloor mineralization. The exploration protocols developed during these surveys include bathymetric mapping of mostly unknown volcanic edifices, followed by detailed water column profiling and sampling to detect and characterize volcanic fluid emission signatures. These procedures are being refined as the survey progresses, both for efficiency and as direct seafloor observations become available for predictive application of water column plume information to guide seafloor mineral exploration.

Roasting of refractory gold ores has been a commercial process for many years. Improvements in design of fluidised bed roasting technologies and low capital and operating costs compared with other refractory treatment processes can potentially make roasting a viable option.However, gold extraction from roasted ores carried out on laboratory scale equipment often invariably yields lower recoveries than other processes such as bio-oxidation or pressure oxidation. Non-optimal laboratory roasting conditions can incorrectly write roasting off as a process option.Low gold recoveries from the cyanidation of calcine products from roasting can often be attributed to roasting conditions not favouring gold liberation and agglomeration processes, particularly if lockups of elements such as arsenic are being pursued for environmental reasons.This paper reviews the conditions favoured for gold agglomeration and accessibility of gold to cyanide, test conditions to achieve gold liberation and agglomeration on laboratory scale and designs that incorporate staged decomposition and roasting to make roasting a more commercial option.CITATION:Aylmore, M G and de Klerk, L W, 2013. The growth of "Unit Load-cargo handling technology in world cargo lin- er trades over the last decade has cre- ated a situation in which special pur- pose-vessels (cellular container ships, roll-on/roll-off vehicle deck ships and Lash type vessels) are rapidly replac- ing conventional cargo ships, the principal means previously available for transporting heavy lifts. Consequently heavy lift traffic has tended to accumulate awaiting ship- ment, especially where discharge is required in "off beat" locations. A partial solution to this problem will be provided by new and small but exceptionally versatile ocean going heavy lift carriers now finding their way into world trade routes. These new ships combine extremely high lifting capacity, high manoeuvreability and exceptionally shallow draft with bow and stern Ro/Ro capability. They can handle rolling loads of exceptional size and weighing up to 1,000 tons Each. But the problem is a far larger and more serious but essentially a domestic one. Major industrial pro- jects in Australia will require pro- gressively heavier and larger plant and construction sites are becoming much more inaccessible. Whereas these new ocean going heavy lift carriers have ample capacity to satisfy part of the total transport requirement, there is clear evidence to show that domestic transport resources have little if any potential for increase in capability at the same rate as demand or at the same rate as sea transport facilities. Resolution of the larger problem is within reach but only through a pro- perly co-ordinated approach to future planning for the overall needs of large scale projects on a national basis. This co-ordinated approach must involve Federal and State government transport administrators, railway and highway authorities, shipping and road haulage interests and finally the planners of the projects which require these improved heavy haulage services.

A current trend amongst producers is the increase in dewatering of iron ore fines (<0.5 mm), due to an increase in wet beneficiation processes used to upgrade lower quality ore deposits, increased water content in orebodies located below the water table, and increasing focus on transportable moisture limits (TML). Vacuum filtration is commonly used for dewatering of iron ore fines, and as with all filtration processes performance decreases with particle size. Significant improvements are possible with the use of filter aids, usually anionic surfactants and flocculants. Anionic surfactants reduce the surface tension of the associated water, which is then removed more readily leading to improved filtercake moistures. Anionic flocculants used correctly can improve cake permeability, in turn, decreasing cake formation times and increasing filtration rates. In addition to increased throughput, savings and benefits for producers can include: moisture limit penalties, improved handleability, along with energy and water savings.The effect of filter aids on two iron ore fines samples from the Pilbara region were evaluated using a lab scale vacuum filtration unit. The first sample showed a reduction in the filtercake moisture content by 2.3 per cent weight/weight (w/w) with the use of BASF’s Drimax® 1234. For the second sample a reduction in the filtercake moisture of 3.4 per cent w/w along with an increase in filtration rate of 20 per cent was achieved by using a combination of Magnafloc® 5250 and Drimax® 1239 NF, as both filter throughput and cake moisture were considered important by site.CITATION:Haskell, T, Dickie, S and Joe, Y, 2017. "The use of flotation columns has remained a contentious issue among mill operators. There are those who consider them an essential part of any mineral processing operation, while others consider them a necessary evil, which should only be installed if there is no alternative. Lastly, there are those who believe they should not be installed, no matter how great the perceived benefit.This paper provides an analysis of over 4000 installed flotation columns, contained in the Amec Foster Wheeler flotation database. Changing trends in column flotation use by type, commodity and geographical region are discussed. The effect of changing commodity prices and the China ‘phenomenon’ are reviewed. Special reference is made to the changing face of column flotation in Australia.Of note is the fact that after falling to a 20 year low in installed flotation column capacity in 2014, flotation columns during 2015 went through a resurgence in popularity. This resurgence was in direct contradiction to depressed metal prices and was driven by brownfield optimisations to reduce off-site costs, particularly in base metals. Antimony (Sb) is an element similar to arsenic that forms anions in surface waters, rather than cations like other metals. Little is known about natural mobility of antimony in the environment. However, recent studies have suggested that antimony has similar toxicity to arsenic. Current New Zealand drinking water guideline values are 3 parts per billion (0.003 mg/l) for antimony and 10 ppb (0.01 mg/l) for arsenic. Antimony occurs principally in stibnite (Sb2S3) in mesothermal vein deposits hosted in low grade metamorphic belts of eastern Australia and southern New Zealand. Many deposits have been mined historically, including one large deposit, at Hillgrove, NSW. Oxidation of stibnite and associated arsenopyrite and pyrite causes local acidification of natural waters but acid is readily neutralised by carbonates in mineralised zones and host rocks, and therefore waters are near-neutral (pH 6-8.5). Antimony dissolves readily in moderately oxidized, near-neutral waters. Experimental stibnite oxidation yielded up to 37 mg/kg (37 000 ppb) dissolved antimony, and mine and tailings dam waters at Hillgrove mine have up to 55 mg/kg (55 000 ppb) dissolved antimony. Natural stibnite can contain >5000 mg/kg arsenic in solid solution and therefore dissolution of stibnite, arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite also releases arsenic into waters. Resultant dissolved arsenic concentrations are up to 3.6 mg/l (experimental) and up to 7.2 mg/l (mine and tailings dam seepages). Mine and tailings discharge waters have elevated antimony and arsenic where they emerge, but attenuation occurs by deposition of the metals on to amorphous iron oxyhydroxides which can contain >10% each of antimony and arsenic. Historic disposal of mineralised waste rock and tailings into the stream system at Hillgrove has caused contamination of sediments and waters with antimony and arsenic for at least 20 km downstream with effects traceable in sediments for 300 km. Other stibnite-bearing deposits are likely to have analogous environmental effects, particularly from historically-mined sites.

Canada’s Quebec province operates 26 metal mines, 19 of which are producing gold and generating over C$1.8 billion (US$1.3 billion) annually. In all those mines, numerous samples of rock are collected and analysed daily in laboratories in order to determine their gold content. However, laboratory results are generally available within 48 hours of sampling (depending on the number of samples received by the laboratory and the priority of the results), thus potentially slowing down mining activities. In an attempt to find a solution for delayed laboratory results, Laval University, in partnership with the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the National Institute for Scientific Research (INRS) and four mining companies (Agnico Eagle, Canadian Malartic, Hecla Québec and Iamgold) have launched the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) project for in situ real-time mining sample analysis. This work aims to minimise the amount of LIBS point sampling necessary to be representative of a full scan of the analysed area. Eight sampling patterns are investigated. A statistical analysis of the data was performed by varying the pattern steps. Results show that two of the patterns, 1 and 5 (single diagonal crossing the stratification of the samples with opposite slopes) minimise the amount of point sampling while remaining representative. The most successful results are obtained from steps which are greater than 6. In terms of the type of material, pattern 5 and steps 9 are better for core sampling, while pattern 1 and steps 8 are better for rock sampling. The geological explanation for these results is the heterogeneous distribution of gold in the sample which seems to be more homogeneous in the rocks than in the core sample due to the small rock size. Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. WHEN the writer resided at Zeehan, qn the West Coast of Tasmania, some years ago, he took a keen interest in the geology of the district and availed himself of the opportunity to investigate occurrences, of the varied minerals in which the field abounds. The following notes were compiled as a result of one of his periodical visits to the outlying mining districts, when an examination was made of the bindsay Reward tin mining property, which has an area of 140 acres. This is most easily reached from Renison Bell, the centre of the North Dundas tin-fields, on the Emu Bay railway, 'about' eight miles north east of Zeehan. Thence a pack track some 14 -miles long connects with the mine, crossing the Piemah River by a fine suspension bridge.The mine itself is situated on the main south leading spot of the Parson's Hood Range, at an altitude of some 1600 ft. above sea level. The Parson's Hood Range is composed of granite and is an extension of the rugged Meredith Range. A remarkable feature is the uniform topography of the surrounding country when viewed from the peaks. Except where dissected by the rivers and creeks, the surface is practically level and, indeed, affords a striking illustration of an ancient uplifted peneplain.The mine has been opened by means of trenches and adits, and the ore-body proved to extend for a length of 30 chains, with an average width of about 100 ft. Its general trend is west-north-west, and its dip, which is steep, corresponds to that of the country-rocks. These latter, which are of sedimentary origin and generally regarded as of pre-Silurian age, have been tilted at high angles, consequent, no doubt, on the crustal movements produced by the intrusion of the huge granitic masses which now form the high ranges in the vicinity.It may be here remarked that it is not Within the scope of this paper to deal with the sequence of events leading to the geological structure...

KIeeman (1968) described practice in the Mount Hebbard dump concentrator, Broken Hill, N.S.W. The purpose of this note is to give data on flotation pulp chemistry in the plant for comparison with results of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b).Ten chemical parameters were measured at ten points in the circuit using the techniques of Woodcock and Jones (1970a, 1970b). Fig. 1 shows a condensed time plot of some continuous measurements in conditioner overflow and rougher feed. There was a fairly steady increase in pH throughout the circuit (Fig. 2), but flotation was always conducted in a slightly acid pulp in spite of the large amount of alkaline reagents added. Eh values became more positive as the pulp progressed through the circuit (Fig. 2) in accord with results elsewhere.

The Prince Lyell orebody at Mount Lyell Mine has a rich mining history commencing with the open pit in 1935, which transitioned underground in 1972. Between 1972 and 2014 a total of 64 Mt was mined underground as the mine extended from 210 m to 1100 m below surface. As the depth increased, three separate transitions in the mining method occurred to meet the changing geotechnical conditions, ore grade, mining costs and metal prices. The first was open stoping with pillar recovery in 1972, followed by front caving and longitudinal sublevel caving (1995), and finally transverse sublevel caving (2004 to 2014). This paper provides an overview of key geotechnical and planning milestones relating to the evolution of the mining method including underground stability, gravity flow, cavability and subsidence. Key aspects of the mine design, geotechnical parameters and rock mass response are described and critiqued with reference to observational, numerical and empirical methods.CITATION:Sharrock, G B and Cuello, D A, 2016. The object of this talk is to bring before members the importance of the prospector and the' State Battery system to the wealth and prosperity of the mining industry in particular and the State of Western Australia in general, and to touch on the more important features.Customs plants of any sort are usually subject to a good deal of critioism, usually on the large profits made at the expense of the customer, etc., and this often clouds the real value of the work being done.Prospectors, on the whole, are a good class of men; they work under conditions and difficulties which would deter those less spirited. Food, water and mining supplies are often difficult to obtain and frequently have to be transported great distances. Their mining tools are usually of the most primitive type, yet during last year over 109,000 tons of prospectors' ore were handled by the State Battery system for 73,250 fine oz. valued in Australian currency at over £587,000, the value being 57/- per long ton at par.This production brings the State Battery system into fourth position amongst the producers of the State, the yield being exceeded by the Lake View and Star, Wiluna and the Great Boulder.In passing I might mention that these notes were written at the end of the year 1940, and the above figures were for the previous period. The figures for last year, 1940, were not quite so good, being 101,000 tons for approximately 60,000 fine oz., valued in Australian currency at £572,000.In spite of this drop the State Battery system maintained its position as fourth in order of gold output for the State.The extractions, as a whole, throughout the system, were 92·54%, made up of 68·86% by amalgamation and 23·68% by cyanidation. These figures, for a group of 20 plants treating widely different classes of ore, must be considered satisfactory. The total production since inception is over £11,000,000 in Australian currency.State Batteries are usually more or less of a standard design. Ore is reduced to about 2i in. maximum size before being sent to the bins. Challenge automatic feeeders control the feed to each mill unit, amalgamated copper plates collect the free gold. Corduroy strakes are used with some ores after amalgamation, but in only a few cases has this been found of any advantage to the customer.The pulp from the battery is sampled, after leaving the tables, with a "Tazewell" sampler and pumped to dams for subsequent cyanide treatment.The "Tazewell" sampler is a machine driven by the moving pulp; and takes about fifteen dips per .minute from such pulp through a slotted...

Rio Tinto has embarked on a journey to use automation to improve the performance of its surface mines. The driver for automation is to improve the accuracy and consistency of mining processes and less to do with cost savings through labour reduction. A key task in most surface mines is blasthole drilling. The degree to how well this is done cascades through the downstream mining process. It impacts scheduling, excavation, slope stability, material handling, beneficiation and final product blending. Improved blasthole drilling was identified as an objective that has a significant business case in most of Rio Tinto's surface mines. This paper describes Rio Tinto's drill enhancement project that has developed a robust system for automating most of the functions on a Terex SKSS16 drill rig. Automated drilling is currently being used in production at the West Angelas iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A description of the essential elements of the drill automation system is given together with an overview of how automated drilling is performed remotely from the mine office. A review of some of the benefits of the enhanced drill system is given together with the future plans to extend the functionality of the automated drill and the expected benefits.
