Industrial process water for the Commodore Coal Mine and the adjoining Millmerran Power Station is provided by pumping secondary treated sewage effluent 100 km from the Wetalla Sewage Treatment Plant near Toowoomba. (A separate source is used for potable water.) The effluent is not of sufficient quality for discharge to a watercourse, but it is suitable, with further treatment, for the mine and power station. In designing and constructing the pipeline, special emphasis was placed on preventing accidental spills or planned releases to the environment. The pipeline and associated works can transfer 1000 ML/annum for reuse in the coal mine and power station.

The Ernest Henry Copper gold mine situated in North West Queensland, Australia, is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper. Currently the open pit produces 11 Mtpa of ore. With open pit mining ceasing in mid 2011 development has begun on an underground sublevel cave mine to extend the life of the operation by another 12 years. When completed the open pit will be 530 m deep and 1.5 km in diameter. The orebody dips at approximately 45° and has been outlined a further 450 m below the base of the pit. This provides some challenges for the Ernest Henry underground mine which is designed to initially truck development and production ore from the end of the pit until a hoisting shaft is commissioned in 2013. Production will then increase to 5.0 Mtpa on its way to an ultimate rate of 6.0 Mtpa in 2016.This paper will focus on the capital development and infrastructure requirements for the underground mine. Areas covered include mine accesses, ore handling system, accommodations for the dip of the orebody, primary ventilation design, dewatering systems and selection of an underground workshop over surface only maintenance.Discussions include the complications arising due to the mine being located directly below a large open pit and the combination of first principle cost analysis and risk assessment which has been used to safely optimise the feasibility study designs.

Hail Creek Mine is an open cut coal operation owned by Rio Tinto. It is located 120 km south west of Mackay in the Bowen Basin region of central Queensland. Opened in late 2003, the mine produces two high quality coking coal products that are used in the production of steel in various overseas markets. Hail Creek is a dragline and truck/shovel operation with a capacity to mine eight million tonnes per annum. In 2010, the production was more than seven million tonnes.Traditionally, coal seam edge loss had been minimised on site by the practice of coal edge buffering. Importing buffer material can be quite expensive as it requires a large involvement from the truck and shovel or dozer fleet. In order to minimise this expense, a program of front splitting was introduced on site. Front splitting however involves an additional blast interaction which places added pressure on mining schedules. Both these methods of coal protection demonstrated a significant benefit with coal loss being reduced by approximately seven per cent (absolute) compared to traditional cast blasting.With the application of electronic detonators at Hail Creek the new blasting practice of dynamic buffering is able to be performed on site. Dynamic buffering refers to a blasting practice where two or three separate blasts are initiated during the same blasting event (front-split, cast and at times presplit). The process involves firing a front-split and allowing it to have time to settle and buffer the coal edge prior to the cast blast initiating. This practice is only made possible with the use of electronic detonators and the effective absence of a surface burning front. Current practice at site involves the front-split being fired (occasionally at the same time as the presplit) and the main cast blast being initiated several seconds later. Dynamic buffering is now used for all cast blasts to coal at Hail Creek. Electronic detonators have allowed Hail Creek to achieve reduced coal losses by buffering the coal edge without compromising the mining schedule.

Within ten months of the first significant intersection on the Vera deposit, approval was given to proceed with a $28.3 M underground development of the Vera-Nancy gold mine. Contrary to what the timeframe suggests, the development of the underground mine was planned in a logical and methodical manner which enabled confirmation of the resource, evaluation of the orebody for mining and sufficient production to recommence milling operations at the Pajingo treatment plant. This paper describes the underlying factors on which the project was planned and developed. The approach has successfully enabled the mine to be in production 18 months after discovery without compromising any future production or potential expansion

The Lanfranchi Nickel mine is located approximately 48 km south of Kambalda in Western Australia. Mining first commenced in the mid-1970s under the previous owner, Western Mining Corporation Ltd. After two years on care and maintenance, Panoramic Resources (previously known as Sally Malay Mining Ltd) purchased the operation in November 2004. The site currently produces approximately 10?000 tonnes of nickel metal annually from approximately 430?000 tonnes of ore. The Ore is mined from four main orebodies; Deacon, Helmut South, Lanfranchi and Schmitz. The Helmut South orebody is situated approximately 790 m below surface and extends to a resource depth of 940 m. Horizontal thickness of the orebody ranges from 10 m to 45 m in width, with the average being 30 m. Previous mining at the Lanfranchi operations specifically the Helmut orebody, had a history of seismic activity. When Panoramic Resources acquired the operation it was decided that seismicity was going to be an issue and therefore a mining method needed to be selected that could effectively manage this potential risk. The dip of the orebody is quite shallow at 45º, with a 30º plunge to the south . The hanging-wall comprises of very weak ultramafics. Due to these factors the orebody posed several mining challenges. To safely and effectively mine the Helmut South orebody in the Lanfranchi Nickel mine, underhand cut and fill mining was selected as the most appropriate mining method. Paste fill comprising of cemented gold tailings was the backfill of choice. This paper is intended to convey some of the key learnings from the use of a mining method that has not been commonly practiced in Australia.

Strain-type rockbursts, or strainbursts, are characterised by a localised violent failure. Their cause is attributed primarily to the sudden release of strain energy, which accumulates in a volume of highly stressed rock as a result of mining activities. Examples of such phenomena are crown/sill pillar bursts created in the mining process, pillar crush in room-and-pillar mining, face ejection in drift development headings at depth, and floor bursts associated with deep shaft sinking. The paper describes a simple method for the assessment of crown pillar bursts in steeply dipping ore deposits which are extracted by the overhand cut-and-fill method. The method is based on a theory previously established by the author to help assess the need for a remedial solution such as pillar destress blasting. Basically, the mining-induced energy storage rate (ESR) in the pillar is compared with the critical strain energy to come up with the so-called burst potential index (BPI).

The analysis of equipment trends in The AusIMMÆs revision of Monograph 19 - Australasian Mining and Metallurgical Operating Practices (AMMOP) (in prep) in the paper by Graham Lumley raised some interesting, and in parts disturbing, trends in the Australian open cut mining industry. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2011) the productivity of the whole mining industry is down by 34 per cent since 2001. In terms of open cut equipment, median output for draglines is down by 15 per cent since 2003, electric rope shovels are down by 41 per cent since 2003, hydraulic excavators are down by 39 per cent since 2008, front-end loaders are down by 39 per cent since 2007 and trucks are down by 41 per cent since 2006. Clearly e boom has not been good for the efficiency of the mines. During this same time, best practice (defined as the average of the top ten per cent by annual output per unit of input) has declined, but not by as much as the median (eg shovels down by eight per cent, excavators down by 19 per cent and FELs down by five per cent). This paper will build on the analysis of AMMOP to understand the differences occurring between median and best practice and identify the factors contributing to the decline in performance. As the industry enters a period of potentially lower prices for commodities and reduced margins, pressure will be brought to bear on mine sites to start moving more with the equipment they have. An understanding of where efficiency has been lost will be a key component in that. The information contained in AMMOP, and the subsequent analysis of that information in papers such as this one, will be crucial to reversing the decline in open cut equipment performance.CITATION:Lumley, G, Trott, T and Lewis, M, 2012. The ores described in this paper are from the two principal orebodies at Wiseman's Creek, a small village about 22 miles south-east of Bathurst in central-western New South Wales.The first official reference to mining at Wiseman's Creek is in "Mineral Statistics of New South Wales" of 1875, which reported that the Wiseman's Creek Copper Mining Company had proved a lode-later known as "North Wiseman's"-to a depth of 120 ft., where it was found to be 20 ft. wide. By 1876 the erection of a mill and smelting works had commenced, and the sulphide ore found to contain copper lead, zinc, silver and gold. Some oxidised ore was also being worked. Operations were, however, generally unsuccessful, and sporadic work up until 1907 produced only about 5,000 tons of ore. The other more important orebody of the locality-the Phoenix-was not opened until about 1895. By 1908, as reported by J. E. Carne, the shaft had been sunk 340 ft., with the extraction of both oxidised and primary ore. At the time of the slump in copper, pric'es in 1907 approximately 3,000 tons of, ore had been produced.Several smaller orebodies were discovered and worked during the same period as the North Wiseman's and Phoenix, but their output was more or less insignficant. THE OREBODIES AND THEIR GEOLOGICAL SETTINGIt is now impossible to examine the orebodies underground, but they appear to have formed a series of flat lenses, whose major axes were parallel to ,the foliation of the enclosing quartz-chlorite-muscovite schists. The largest ,of these lenses was worked as the North Wiseman's orebody, which was reported by Carne to vary in width from 1 ft. to 20 ft., and which probably extended discontinuously over a strike length of about 1,000 ft. The Phoenix orebody is stated to have varied from 1 ft. 6 in. to 3 ft. in width...

Future climate variability and change will impact on mining operations and their attendant communities. To minimise this impact, early and informed risk management is warranted. However, research into the risks posed by climate to the Australian mining industry has so far been limited. We are conducting a systematic study of the mining life-cycle to identify the main areas of vulnerability and adaptive capacity of operations and communities. This project aims to assess what adaptation activities are currently being undertaken within the mining industry and its communities across Australia and to develop a risk management approach that will aid the adaptation of practices in and around the industry, better assuring the security of people, jobs, revenue and the environment under changed or extreme climate conditions. The Canadian mining industry was recently assessed through a similar study, which found that many mining companies perceive a real risk to mining from climate change in the future, despite few companies being actively involved in managing such risk. At a workshop held by CSIRO involving mining specialists, the most vulnerable stage in the mining process in the Australian context was assessed to be production. In particular, impacts on water and energy supplies and also transport and infrastructure were of high concern. Additionally, heat stress on workers and equipment, changes in groundwater flow and increases in geohazards were also identified as important factors in the short and long term if problematic climate events become more extreme or more frequent. Risks in the planning and post-mine stages were also identified. Based on literature reviews and preliminary discussions with mining experts, here we present an initial assessment of the climate adaptation issues relating to mining and its associated communities and describe our future work plans in this area.

Social licence to mine is influenced by society’s perception of the mining sector’s ability to effectively rehabilitate mined land and for governments to appropriately regulate that process for the broader community benefit. In Queensland, Australia, many mine rehabilitation personnel working for active coalmines, as either staff, consultants or contractors, belong to the Central Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Group (CQMRG). The CQMRG was established 23 years ago with the aim of sharing informal knowledge related to practical aspects of rehabilitation in order to leave as positive a legacy as possible from mined land. This voluntary group of professionals also includes members from regulatory agencies and civil society. Within the dynamic regional mining environment, mine rehabilitation professionals benefit from sharing their informal knowledge.CQMRG is currently a group in transition. Mining boom and downturn cycles have exacerbated the loss of accumulated knowledge in the core CQMRG membership due to rapid changes in personnel at mines in the region. Additionally, some of the most experienced CQMRG-affiliated rehabilitation practitioners are approaching the end of their careers and want their valuable and less formal knowledge retained. In New Zealand, volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits are found in three main geological environments associated with: 1.   ophiolitic basalts of Oligocene age in Northland and East Cape (eg Pupuke, Pakotai, Parakao and Lottin Point); 2.   with chert and pillow lava in greywacke sequences of Permian-Jurassic age (Torlesse and Waipapa terranes; eg Kawau Island, Te Kumi and Maharahara) and their metamorphic equivalents (Haast Schist; eg Moke Creek and Waitahuna); and 3.   with greenschists (metabasalts) and metaserpentinite of Permian-Triassic age (Ponamu Ultramafics) in Westland (eg Bowen and Wilberg ranges). The deposits consist of small lenses of disseminated to massive sulfide minerals, mainly pyrite and chalcopyrite. Small quantities of copper ore were mined from some deposits in the 1800s (eg Kawau Island from 1846), with the last mining at Parakao from 1961 to 1966. Several deposits have been recently examined for their gold potential with assays on sulfide rock samples as high as 75 g/t Au (Lottin Point).

Despite the large areas of sedimentary basins in Western Australia, the coal resources are very meagre., This is a serious problem for the State, which-at present-lacks any other alternate source of fuel-for power production.. Located coal deposits are all poor in quality and mostly brown coals of little importance. The best..coal suitable for extraction is at Collie, where a black=sub- bituminous non-coking coal is mined. Most other coals recorded are low grade or lignite, with high ash'and moisture content and a low calorific value. Coal was first discovered in Western Australia in the bed of the Irwin River, 50-miles south-east of Geraldton, by the Gregory brothers, explorers, in the year 18+6,. but although investigated, it has never been developed. The most noteworthy discovery of coal was in the Collie River, 26 miles east of Bunbury, by Arthur Perrin in 1883. Production commenced in 1898 and ever since, Collie has continued to be the State's sole producing coalfield.

Optimal drill and blast design is a process often neglected by many underground hard rock mines. This is even more important to the new mine where ring designs need to be implemented and refined in a short period of time. In today's environment where more and more mining is being carried out by contract specialists it is the co-operation between a principal and contractor, who are working towards a common goal, that achieves the highest quality end result. The development of drill and blast designs that cause minimal damage to the mine infrastructure is particularly important to Northparke's E26 Block Cave Mine, as it consists of a single extraction level which must survive intact for the life of the mine. The advanced undercut mining method implemented at Northparkes is fired in a sequence which protects the mine development from potentially damaging abutment stress. This paper details how blast designs will be optimised and sequenced to satisfy the conflicting objectives of maximum rock breakage inside the drill pattern and minimum rock damage outside the pattern.

Installing ground support correctly is not an easy task, whether lack of operator training, poor ground conditions or underperforming equipment. Confirming the quality of installation can help with planning and remedial works and help to maintain a safe working environment. A 2?m bolt with 700?mm of encapsulation will pass a 10?t pull test (assuming ground conditions permit); however, it will not provide any data of the unencapsulated length and thus the ability to withstand corrosion. Complimentary testing in the form of non-destructive testing (NDT) can provide factual data that leads to the assessment of the quality of the encapsulation. By improving the quality of the encapsulation, the risk of corrosion is reduced, the ground support durability is improved and hence the asset life is enhanced.This paper presents a case study of a trial using the NDT system RokTel™. Installations of varying quality were installed and tested. The characteristics tested were corrosion, load and free length. These characteristics can be tested and assessed for cable bolts, thread bar bolts and split sets. The Bogong Power Development Project in Victoria, Australia involved the construction of a 15 m long mass concrete plug up to 9 m in diameter within the head race tunnel. The plug is critical to theperformance of the scheme as it permanently seals the head race tunnel under approximately 300 m head of water.The location of the plug in the headrace tunnel was determined by a programme of in situ rock stress testing using both hydrofracturing and over coring stress testing methods.In recognition of the importance of the plug, the Head Contract specification requires that its temperature during hydration be controlled using an embedded cooling system. In addition, contact grouting and curtain grouting around the plug cannot commence until thermal contraction was substantially complete.This paper describes the use of bespoke fi nite element software to model the temperature rise in the plug and design mitigation measures to control temperature rise in the plug. These measures include restricting the concrete placing temperature to 10°C, incorporating 39 per cent fly ash in the concrete and installing embedded cooling circuits.Site trials were undertaken to calibrate the model for the proposed concrete mix. The cooling system comprised 25 mm ID pipes forming twelve separate circuits that fed 7°C water from a single chiller unit. The cooling system reduced the peak temperature in the plug to approximately 30°C and the associated risk of early-cracking. The time before contact grouting could commence was shortened to less than two weeks from casting.

"The rise of autonomous haul truck fleets may have been initially driven by the rapid escalation of the cost of equipment operators, but the actual improvements reported by the major iron ore miners far exceeds the simple reduction in workforce. Utilising cost models developed for feasibility studies and mining contract modelling, the limits of cost improvements due to simple labour reductions are compared to those achieved by the early autonomous fleet adopters and through traditional process improvement techniques such as fleet class upgrades or hot-seating of equipment. As autonomous fleet implementation matures, it is likely that the gains seen by current adopters will seem minor compared to the limits generally governed by the limit of equipment utilisation. The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

Monitoring for signs of elevated spontaneous combustion in the active goaf behind the longwall face is crucial for early intervention of any potential heating incidents. Typically, trigger action response plans (TARPs) are established at the start of longwall mining and often are only reviewed when triggers are activated frequently and become ‘nuisance alarms’, or in the worst case scenario after a heating event. Narrabri Mine has adopted a proactive approach of reviewing the longwall active goaf spontaneous combustion monitoring TARP at the commencement of each longwall block and prior to reaching a known ‘mylonite zone’ of crushed coal, which is associated with increased coal oxidation. The review is based on information recorded from the monitoring data of the previous longwall blocks as well as interpretation of relevant spontaneous combustion propensity results for the coal. This has resulted in the mine implementing a zoned TARP approach for each longwall block covering both the longwall retreat through normal undisturbed coal and the zone where the goaf is influenced by the increased coal oxidation associated with the mylonite coal. The consequence of this approach is that it has removed the issue of having nuisance triggers being activated during mining through a known increased oxidation zone, while maintaining a high awareness of indicators of spontaneous combustion.CITATION:Baxter, H, Claassen, C, Salisbury, O, Brady, M and Beamish, B, 2015. The recycling of process water comes with increased electrolyte concentrations that affect water quality, which may in turn affect the flotation performance of valuable minerals (Hirajima et al, 2016). Electrolytes such as Ca2+, SO4 2- , Mg2+ and S2O3 2- have been surmised to have an impact on the action of flotation reagents such as collectors (Ikumapayi et al, 2012). Xanthate collectors are known to play a significant role in imparting hydrophobicity on mineral surfaces to enhance their flotation. The interaction between minerals and xanthates is well known to be electrochemical in nature. Such redox processes may be elucidated by electrochemical techniques. Since the mechanisms involving the interactions between electrolytes in process water with sulfide minerals and the subsequent adsorption kinetics of collectors are not well understood, this study therefore aims to provide fundamental knowledge to unpack the mechanisms involved when electrolytes interact with Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) and how these interactions may affect xanthate adsorption. The interaction of sodium iso-butyl xanthate (SIBX) in the presence of electrolytes at increasing ionic strength was investigated by rest potential measurements, to explain the impact of electrolytes on the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs in the flotation process. Rest potential measurements for PdTe2 and PdS were conducted in an air saturated 0.05 M di-sodium tetraborate decahydrate solution, in the absence and presence of SIBX and electrolytes. It was found that the existence of sulfide and telluride on palladium affects the mechanisms in which electrolytes interact with Pd mineral surfaces. An increase in the ionic strength of Na2S2O3, CaCl2 and MgCl2, increased the interaction between the salts and PdS, thus decreasing the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdS. An increase in ionic strength for Na2S2O3 increased the interaction between Na2S2O3 and PdTe2 and therefore decreased the extent to which SIBX interacted with PdTe2. Other salts investigated in this study increased the rate of oxidation of PdTe2 with an increase in ionic strength thereby enhancing the interaction of SIBX and PdTe2. This study has shown that mineral type, electrolyte type and concentration all have an impact on the mechanisms that result in the adsorption of SIBX on PGMs.
