Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) manages eleven mines in the Pilbara region, Western Australia. Three of these mines have previously or are currently mining black shale that contains varying amounts of pyrite. Several new deposits currently being evaluated and existing mines that may progress below water table in the future, will also encounter this waste material. The black shale presents not just an acid rock drainage risk but also a spontaneous combustion risk. This paper presents the black shale management strategy and provides an overview of the relevant activities undertaken by RTIO. The strategy can be divided into two components which firstly involve defining the risk and secondly involve managing the risk. The mineral waste management plan is used to identify specific mineral waste hazards by:geochemical characterisation of waste material,undertaking mine site specific risk assessments,characterising the receiving environment,identifying sulfidic boundaries in geological and mining models,quantifying the amount of sulfidic material in medium and long-term mine plans, anddesigning and sequencing black shale waste dumps. Once a mine exposes black shale the Spontaneous Combustion and Acid Rock Drainage management plan is used and the major activities are: regular site meetings with a representative from every group that works with black shale;compliance with safe working procedures for site specific and detailed activities;regular training;the use of specific explosives to prevent premature detonation;ongoing geochemical characterisation;acid water management, monitoring and analysis;regular internal and external auditing of procedures and practices; andclosure planning assessments and preparations (ie cover trials, geochemical void modelling, geochemical waste dump modelling). The success of this holistic strategy is evident by the awareness of personnel within the business, thorough understanding of the geochemistry and by undertaking proactive management of black shale during mining. The strategy and management plans adopted by Rio Tinto Iron Ore have activities that other mine sites with potentially acid forming material may like to consider implementing.

Both machines have enhanced the production capabilities and quality control of the Roscommon comminuition circuit and they will provide efficient and reliable crushing well into the next century.

The Taupo Volcanic Zone inNew Zealand and the Philippine Mobile Belt in the Philippines are characterized by active subduction, active volcanism and high seismicity. The main factors affecting characteristics of geothermal systems in both countries are: tectonic setting, source magmas, maturity of the systems, and depth to the degassing magma body. Within New Zealand, geothermal systems are grouped into arc- and rift-type. Fluids in arc-type systems contain high amounts of volatiles (<20%), with high CO2/Cl, CO2/He, and N2/Ar ratios. Mantle-type volatiles predominate in rift-type systems. Philippine geothermal systems are largely arc-type, the topography is rugged, leading to the separation of water and vapour upflows, as opposed to the overlap found in New Zealand. The relatively shallow depths of degassing magma bodies in the Philippines results in steeper geochemical gradients, leading to higher proportions of arc-type magmatic water (>40%) and higher Cl contents (3000 - 10 000 mg/kg), Maximum temperatures are also higher, reaching up to >400¦C. Arc-type alteration assemblages in New Zealand and the Philippines are similar. Because Philippine geothermal systems are less mature, have higher temperatures and steeper geochemical gradients than New Zealand ones, advanced argillization is more widespread occurring down to depths of 2000 m. Mineral phases are more varied due to the active input of magmatic waters and the formation of vapor conditions at depth, forming P04-, B-, Li-, Ce-, F-, and Cl-bearing minerals at high temperatures. In the Philippines, high temperature magmatic-hydrothermal to contact metamorphic assemblages containing biotite, amphiboles and pyroxenes are relatively common, but rare in New Zealand.

A review of historic mining information and geological literature pertaining to the Alpine Mine, Lyell Goldfield has been completed. As a result of this work the Alpine reef is inferred to be associated with an upright anticline with a sub-horizontal axis. Structural profiles prepared from limited underground data indicate that the reef is subparallel to the eastern limb of the anticline and cuts across the western limb. Reassessment of structural mapping completed by the New Zealand Geological Survey indicates that Greenland Group metasediments within the Lyell Goldfield are folded into a series of opposed assymetic folds with sub-horizontal axes. It is suggested that the anticline which harbours the Alpine Reef is located on the axis of a synclinorium. Along the western limb of the synclinorium the subsidiary folds have steep west dipping limbs and shallow east dipping limbs (western sense of assymmetry) whereas shallow west dips and steep east dips are typical of the eastern limb. The notion of quartz mineralisation occupying the axis of a synclinorium is contrary to the situation in the Reefton Goldfield where quartz mineralisation is affiliated with folds associated with an anticlinorium. Historic mine data reveals that below No.4 Level the quartz-gold mineralisation, in the Alpine Mine, occupied a steeply dipping ore channel. The strike of the channel was to the northwest and within this structure the are shoots plunged to the north at approximately 40¦. Archival mine plans show that two quartz bodies, the North and South Blocks, were present at No. 4 Level. Although the North Block was followed down to No 14 Level (530 m vertically below the surface outcrop) the South Block was only mined as far as No 7 Level. Sampling on No 7 Level together with the results of trial mining suggest that the grade of quartz underfoot in South Block is low. Information from the Mines Statements and mapping undertaken by the Gold Prospecting Scheme reveals that faulting had a profound influence on the intregity and extent of the Alpine Reef. The reef occupies a Inajor shear zone but little is known about it. It is also apparent that below No 7 Level the reef was progressively shattered by faulting and this may be the chief reason for the decrease in grade in the lower levels of the mine. No substantive facts are available about wall rock alteration effects adjacent to the Alpine Reef Still this is not surprising considering that comments on the mineralised pug envelope and breccias adjacent to the mined quartz shoots at the Globe - Progress Prospect were omitted from contemporary publications. In spite of this the existance of sulphide bearing reef casing lithologies cannot be completely dismissed since 9.15 m of 'reef track' has been reported in Reids No 2 Level.

Building the Unified Comminution Model The Unified Comminution Model (UCM) was formulated with the vision of bringing all comminution models onto a common base. The structure of the model relies on knowledge of the mechanical environment in the comminution devices to predict the modes and rates of collision in a device. A detailed understanding of the breakage modes and an ability to correctly test these modes for the ores in question is then required to feed into the UCM. A model structure has been developed that has the capability of dealing with multiple modes of breakage, such as low energy impact surface damage, chipping, sliding abrasion, cumulative impact body breakage and the transition of rock between modes. A critical review is presented on the shortcomings and limitations of utilising the discrete element method (DEM) to provide the mechanical environments. The assumptions and applicability of utilising DEM in milling models are presented and proposed routes to building a realistic mechanistic model are proposed. Based on this more realistic measures of collision energy have been derived from the DEM simulations, which better mimic the real breakage tests. Generic forms of the collision energy distributions have been observed and developed into functional forms for use in the simulation environment. The method of application of this model to a pilot SAG mill is presented.

In the Mesel sediment-hosted disseminated gold deposit, the spatial distribution of hydrothermal alteration is controlled by steeply dipping faults and shallowly dipping lithologies. Hydrothermal alteration of carbonate rock is characterised by decalcification, dolomitisation and silicification. Intense argillic alteration occurs in a laccolithic andesite intrusion adjacent to decalcified and silicified carbonate units. Sulphide minerals (pyrite, realgar, orpiment, stibnite and cinnabar) accompany hydrothermal alteration and precious metal mineralisation. The trace elements Ag, As, Sb and Hg are zoned spatially throughout the deposit. Mesel contains a mineable gold reserve of 7.8 million tonnes at 7.3 g/t Au. Gold mineralisation is preferentially localised in carbonate rocks adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion. The ore body consists of a central, near-vertical, high grade 'feeder' system flanked by tabular, inward dipping, moderate grade 'ouflow' zones. Mineralisation is controlled predominantly by two steeply dipping faults with high grade (=10 g/t) gold zones centred about structural intersections and fault splays. Gold is submicron size and locked in very fine grained (<10 microns), disseminated and fracture-controlled arsenical pyrite. The Mesel deposit developed where high angle faults guided ascending, sulphidising fluids into reactive carbonate stratigraphy adjacent to and beneath the andesite intrusion and during subsequent migration of the auriferous fluids along 'outflow' channels. Early decalcification and dolomitisation enhanced porosity and permeability prior to silicification and sulphidation. Gold deposition occurred late in the genesis of the deposit.

Constraints on pore water evolution in the aquifers of a sedimentary basin may be realised through stable isotope analyses of present day waters, and their comparison with water compositions calculated to have been in isotope equilibrium with the products of diagenesis during burial. Integrated with detailed petrographic observations, and thermal, structural and stratigraphic analyses, fluid migration patterns at various stages in a basin's history can be identified. This has important implications for modelling basin hydrology, hydrocarbon distribution, and reservoir quality in the Latrobe Group, Gippsland Basin, and oil-prone successions Elsewhere.

The economic success of cave mining projects is significantly influenced by the secondary fragmentation size distribution of the caved orebody and making the fragmented ore available for extraction. If the cave does not propagate as predicted, it may lead to stalled cave growth and/or localised preferential caving. This can cause significant ore loss and the inclusion of excessive waste in draw columns, both of which damage the economic value of the project. Uncontrolled caving can have severe consequences for the safety and economics of mines. Such safety risks include air blasts due to the formation of excessive air gaps and damage to infrastructure due to surface subsidence. Monitoring the cave-back delivers critical feedback that is required to exert control over its propagation and reduce the likelihood of adverse consequences. Current methods for monitoring cave propagation include access through open holes, microseismic monitoring systems, time domain reflectometers and extensometers. All of these monitoring systems rely on stable holes for installation and ongoing data collection. However, cables in holes often get sheared due to ground movement in the seismogenic zone well ahead of the cave front, rendering the systems useless. To resolve this issue, Elexon Mining, with the support of Rio Tinto, developed the Networked Smart Marker system, which is based on Elexon’s Smart Marker technology. This system provides a more robust and versatile alternative to other cave monitoring systems as the data is transmitted wirelessly through rock, and thus is not vulnerable to hole shearing/dislocation experienced with current cave monitoring systems. Installations at the Argyle block cave have proven that the Networked Smart Maker system can continue to provide information on the cave-back’s location long after all conventional monitoring systems have failed. Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. Murrin Murrin Operations have not had a successful beginning. Numerous reliability and operability issues, many of which are the result of design decisions, have been addressed through mechanical and operational changes and the CCD circuit is no exception. Four design aspects of the CCD circuit that have caused and continue to cause operational problems are: the inclusion of solution neutralisation gypsum in the CCD circuit feed which was designed solely for HPAL residue without proper investigation of its impact on the achievable underflow density and resulting wash efficiency; the decision to construct the thickener base from thickened solids; the lack of redundancy in the overflow, underflow and tailings pipe work; and the lack of thickener operational flexibility in the central rake-lift and feedwell dilution system. In November 2002, the lack of operational flexibility in the rake-lift and the feedwell dilution system was improved through mechanical modification as follows:CCD1 rake mechanism was modified to allow central vertical lift of 600 mm; and CCD1 changed to forced dilution using the Outokumpu TurbodilRântechnology by replacing the E-DucânRtechnology of Eimco. The installation and the results of the CCD1 rake-lift mechanism and feedwell dilution system changes are discussed in this paper.

The Kulumadau deposit represents an intermediate-sulfidation epithermal gold deposit (3.8 Mt at 2.3 g/t, Ag:Au = 1). Mineralisation is primarily confined to hydrothermal breccias within pre-existing fault zones, where it is disseminated throughout a hydrothermal matrix comprising chlorite-quartz-adularia-illite-I/S clays-calcite-pyrite. The host sequence represents numerous mid-Miocene pyroclastic flow eruptions within a tectonically active emergent shallow marine to subaerial depositional setting. Subsequent growth faulting was responsible for debris avalanches, which were subsequently cut by reverse faults. Faults were exploited by hydrothermal fluids, with the heightened porosity at the juncture between faults and debris material facilitating boiling of the ore constituents. Fluid inclusion studies suggest that fluid mixing between meteoric fluids and magmatic fluids, accompanied by boiling, were the primary mechanisms for gold deposition. In different parts of the world the term epithermal is commonly used for a variety of deposit styles. Using the redox state of the ore-forming fluid (inferred from mineralogy and alteration), the metal assemblage of deposits, and other characteristics, at least five different styles of epithermal deposit can be distinguished. Most of these different deposit styles appear to be related to magmatic fluids, with differences resulting from different compositions of source magmas. The most common style of epithermal deposit (low-sulfidation gold-silver deposits associated with calc-alkaline volcanic rocks) remains the most difficult to explain; the metals in these deposits may be derived by basement leaching without magmatic input, or they may come from magmatic volatiles, with contaminated I-type or S-type magmas as the most likely source.

Conventional flotation technology has historically failed to achieve high recoveries when treating <15 µm particles (Lynch et al, 1981). The new StackCell™ flotation technology was developed to specifically target this particle size range, and was tested at pilot plant scale at Mt Keith Nickel Concentrator. The streams tested, Slimes Rougher Tailings and Fines/Slimes Cleaner Tailings, represent 21% and 11% of the total nickel lost to tailings in the plant. Laboratory scale test work indicated that an economically significant fraction of these losses was consistently available to be recovered by additional flotation. The pilot plant experimental scope included over 50 tests. A grade recovery curve for each stream was developed, as well as information on the effect of ore type, feed rate, wash water, air flow, collector and frother on the performance of the cell. The single StackCell was able to achieve nickel recoveries of 16.8% and 16.5% on the Rougher Tailings and Cleaner Tailings, respectively, at grades consistent with these blocks. Additional test work of the StackCell in a cleaner scalper duty yielded final quality concentrate with a maximum nickel recovery of 59.5% for the single stage StackCell. Laboratory scale simulation of the downstream impacts of the StackCell operating as a cleaner scalper indicated a net recovery benefit of up to 2.0% for this cleaner block.Tests were completed to compare residence time requirements of the StackCell, as compared to conventional flotation. In 55 seconds, the pilot plant StackCell achieved 50% of the recovery of a 960 second laboratory scale conventional flotation on the same feed material. The apparent improvement in flotation kinetics is attributed to the novel high intensity aeration system, which provides efficient bubble-particle contact thereby shortening the residence time required to achieve high recoveries. The smaller footprint and lower energy costs of such a cell are also benefits of this technology, which is being considered for industrial scale installation as a result of this test work. Steelmakers are increasingly motivated to use iron ore resources with a wider range of grades and mineral types that were previously considered unsuitable or uneconomical for sintering. In this respect, specific issues, which now require further investigation and understanding, include the sintering of ore types with:- overall higher gangue content- elements that cause problems in the steel manufacturing operations- distinctive sintering performance compared with traditional hematite-rich iron ores. Laboratory-based investigations of the sintering performance and the behaviour of gangue impurities during sintering is an important step towards the successful utilisation of these resources in steelmaking.In terms of laboratory-based sintering investigations, there are two generally accepted experimental scales utilised prior to undertaking industrial-scale trials, which include: bench-scale tablet (compact) testing and pilot-scale pot testing. The former has the advantages of flexibility and more precise control of sintering conditions; but it is difficult to simulate the heterogeneity of a sinter bed. The latter, which is carried out in pots with diameters between 150–500 mm, simulate the commercial sintering process and conditions quite well, but is time-consuming and labour-intensive due to operational complexity. It is therefore desirable to establish a smaller scale pot testing facility that avoids the disadvantages of the normal sintering pot but can provide comparable information.To explore the feasibility of small-scale pot testing, a ‘millipot’ facility was established to examine the sintering performance of iron ores and other non-traditional ferrous materials. The millipot has a diameter of 53 mm and height of 400 mm. The facility has the capability to monitor the sintering temperature at a number of locations (axial, radial) within the sinter bed and to adjust the suction (‘windbox’) pressure. A water/air model was developed to simulate the refining of molten aluminium by the sparging of gas through an impeller. The optimal gas dispersion depends upon selecting the correct gas rate for a given impeller rotational velocity to prevent flooding or channelling. Correlations illustrating this flooding behaviour exist for standard impellers within standard tank geometries. However the validity of these correlations has not been substantiated for gas dispersion in high temperature molten metals with non-standard tank and impeller dimensions. Metal refining is most efficient when fine bubbles are generated and uniformly distributed within the treatment tank. The application of some measuring technique able to detect this distribution within a non transparent operating treatment tank would be invaluable, enabling the optimisation of gas flow and impeller speed.   A technique has been developed to measure the pressure fluctuation levels at specific points in the water model. Comparison of these pressure fluctuation data with photographic evidence obtained in the water model suggests that the flow regime in the metal treatment unit may be determined using this technique.

In its industrial days, Hong Kong’s mining industry was thriving, benefitting from the mineral occurrences that are related to the regional Mesozoic igneous and hydrothermal activities.Hong Kong was unique in the mining sector as it was so small in landmass but with such a rich variety of commodities discovered. There are records of commercial exploitation of tungsten, iron, lead, silver, beryl, graphite, quartz, feldspar and kaolin in Hong Kong before 1981. Of these, most of them are located in the New Territories.The Lin Ma Hang lead mine was operated in the 19th century by the Portuguese and was abandoned in 1958. The Needle Hill tungsten deposit was discovered in 1935 during construction of the Jubilee Reservoir. The Ma On Shan iron mine, which operated for 70 years between 1906 and 1976, was the largest mine in the history of Hong Kong. The Mui Wo lead-silver mine on Lantau Island can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. West Brother Island, which extracted graphite from 1952 to 1973, was levelled in the 1990s to make way for the development of the airport at Chek Lap Kok.Nowadays, these mines are disused and abandoned, but this extended abstract reviews the legacy of the mining industry in Hong Kong to understand the impact that it had on techniques, the economy and culture.CITATION:Chu, J C T and Chan, J S-L, 2015.  The Southern Alps is an active oblique collisional zone which has a characteristic wedge-shaped geometry above a low-angle ductile shear zone. The Main Divide region is a relatively low strain zone above this ductile shear zone, and is _deforming principally along steeply dipping strike-slip faults. Extensional fractures are common at a high angle to the regional structural trend. These steeply dipping structures act as conduits for gold-bearing fluids from depth, and small mesothermal gold deposits have formed at several structural levels including the near-surface region. Gold has also been deposited in a meteoricmetamorphic fluid mixing zone near a conductive thermal anomaly on the western slopes of the mountains. These various gold deposits and their well-constrained structural and tectonic settings can be used as analogues for larger, deeper-eroded mesothermal gold deposits in the Mesozoic Otago Schist belt. High level Miocene veins in NW Otago have formed beneath the main divide of the initiating Southern Alps. Late metamorphic gold-bearing veins formed as fluid escaped from the ductile-deforming crustal root beneath Mesozoic mountains.
