PYROPHYLLITE, first identified as soapstone,1 later as agalmatolite,2 and finally as pyrophyllite,3 has been known to occur in North Carolina for more than 130 years and has been produced intermittently in commercial amounts for the past 100 years. Pyrophyllite mining, however, has become a major industry in North Carolina only during the past 25 years. North Carolina and California are the chief producing states. Current annual production averages 125,000 tons, of which slightly more than 90 pct comes from North Carolina. Distribution and Geologic Setting: All known pyrophyllite deposits in North Carolina are associated with rocks of the Carolina Slate Belt,4 which is composed of a vast series of metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary materials, occurring as two zones extending in a northeast-southwest direction across the state. The larger of these zones, lying in the central Piedmont region, varies from 8 to 50 miles wide. The smaller zone lies along the eastern edge of the Piedmont region and is partly covered by coastal plain sediments.

Faced with a severe disposal problem of their fines from a coal mine in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of extreme eastern Kentucky, Eastern Coal Corporation has built a special plant to pelletize the fines into high quality coal pellets meeting the requirements of the metallurgical market. These low-ash, low-sulfur pellets measuring 3/4 x 3/8 in. contain less than 1.5% moisture and have the same stability as raw coal of the same size. Although Eastern Coal is mining 6000 tpd, the company had, until recently, no provision to recover the fine coal which was included with the plant effluent pumped to a 12-acre refuse pond. The pond, impounded behind the coarse refuse dump, rose 15 ft last year and obviously no pond can stand many years at this rate. Limited pond space in this rugged area of steep hills and narrow valleys dictated a revised disposal method.

TRANSVERSE rupture tests have been commonly used in mechanical investigations of brittle materials. The specimens are simple, easy to prepare, and loading presents no difficulty. Owing to the complexity of stress distribution in bending1 one can determine stresses rigorously only for the elastic range. The bend-test results, however, are at times converted into tensile-strength data, determined as maximum fiber stress. The assumption is made that for small plastic deformations the linear stress-strain relation applies. This problem was experimentally investigated by Bach3 who tested cast iron in bending and in tension and found that the maximum fiber strength obtained in bending exceeded the experimental tensile strength by a factor depending on the geometry of the tested piece. The factor varied from 1.57 for a rectangular cross section to 2.12 for a circular cross section of the tested beam. Since this work was carried out 60 years ago, the cast iron used could be expected to have been highly brittle, thus the extent of plastic deformation prior to fracture very small. We have therefore carried out a number of tests on magnesium-modified cast iron with an average elongation of -5 pct. It was hoped that the data obtained from the tests would serve as a guideline for comparing data obtained in tension and bending for brittle materials. Mechanical properties were measured at room temperature on an Instron tensile machine at a crosshead speed of 0.05 in. per min. The three-point bend test employed cylindrical bars 0.20 in. in diameter with a 1.0-in. span. For the tensile test, cylindrical tensile specimens with a gage length of 0.85 in. and a diameter of 0.160 in. were used. Results are summarized in Table I. THIS paper does not deal with all sands used in the glass industry in Missouri; it covers only that used in the plate-glass factory at Crystal City. However, it is probably safe to say that other sands, produced throughout the state for this purpose, are of identical nature. The glass sand used in Missouri is commonly called the St. Peter deposit, which is ascribed to the Ordovician Rock series in the form of sandstone. This St. Peter deposit, aside from a few small outliers, covers a large area of eastern Missouri. It forms, through a broad curve, the northeast margin of the typical Ozark region between Cape Girardeau on the southeast and Mineola, Montgomery County, on the northwest. The belt is extremely irregular, varying from one to ten miles in width; its length is 150 miles in a straight line. The outcrop near the entrance to the Crystal City mine appears in the form of a sandstone bluff approximately 30 ft. high, running along Plattin Creek (Fig. 1). Above the sand rock an overburden of Joachim limestone appears, which thickens to nearly 300 ft. and forms the hill commonly called Buck Knob. Test holes where drilled at various points and the drillers' log indicate that the St. Peter deposit ranges in thickness from 63 to 71 feet. PROPERTIES OF THE ST. DURING the past 15 years in this country there have been few additions to the literature of lead smelting. After the consolidation of the principal smelting companies at the beginning of this period it became the policy of the larger company not to permit the publication of details in regard to many of its metallurgical processes. This led to similar action on the part of some of its competitors. The result, of course, was a decided decrease in the number of papers written upon the practical side of the subject. Even upon the theoretical side the contributions have been few. It would seem that the industry as a whole has suffered from this general unwillingness to exchange information. While it is true that a given company is entitled to the reward that may come from its own development of a new process, it is also true that a still greater reward might be the result of a free exchange of ideas with other plants. This principle has been recognized for a long time in other metallurgical industries, notably those engaged in the smelting of iron and the manufacture of steel. It is pleasing to note that the leading lead-smelting company has very recently decided to modify its policy of secrecy, and to permit the publication of papers covering some details of its metallurgical methods. The statement has been made that there has been but little progress in lead smelting during the period just referred to. This impression is due in part to the scarcity of papers written on the subject. There has been, it is true, some discussion of the new sintering processes, but with little reference to detail, and to the effect that blast roasting has had upon the industry as a whole. In spite of the prevailing belief, it may be said that lead smelting, in common with other metallurgical industries, has made steady and substantial progress. It is the purpose of the present paper to discuss briefly some features of the industry as it is now conducted, with special reference to the blast-furnace practice in the larger silver-lead smelting plants of the United States and Mexico.

THIS paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, rang-ing sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration.

A method of stability analysis of underground opening by the limiting equilibrium approach is presented. The Coulomb shear failure criterion is employed to find possible fracture surfaces and to evaluate the shear strengths along them. The normal stresses required for the calculation of shear strength, and the shear stresses for the calculation of total shear force along the fracture surfaces, are obtained by the finite-element method of plane-strain analysis. The factor of safety against Coulomb shear failure is calculated as the ratio of the shear strength to the shear force along a fracture surface, similar to the practice in slope stability analysis. Four shapes of openings are analyzed, with three ratios of horizontal lithostatic stress and four coefficients of internal friction. The critical fracture surfaces found by this method of analysis are consistent with the arching of roofs and slabbing of ribs commonly observed.

THE Clinton group of the Silurian holds the red or fossiliferous ore; its outcrops have been mapped by the State or U. S. Geological Survey. This group is from 100 to 500 ft. thick in Alabama. There are places where it is entirely missing (doubtless islands in the Silurian Sea). In Etowah County, in part of Greasy Cove and vicinity, the upper seam is a coral reef impregnated with the red ore; in this same county, step, faults bring up the ore in three or four separate ridges practically parallel. In Blount County and on Raccoon Mountain, the ore runs under the carboniferous rocks and outcrops in the valleys. In examining some bore holes made in drilling for oil, the writer found the Clinton group continuing under the Warrior coal field wherever the drill has gone deep enough. It demonstrates the possibility of a source for red ore not seriously thought of until lately. The following bore holes made principally for oil, given in Bulletin No. 22, Geological Survey of Alabama, show the presence of either ore or red rock, and suggest vast resources yet to be outlined and developed for ore in the future. The locations are given by number on the map. Hole No. 1 was drilled 6 miles southeast of Russellville, Franklin County, by the Woodward Oil & Gas Co. It passed through 160 ft. of Clinton, but only a small show of red ore was found at 1280-1400 feet. A test well, No. 2, drilled near Atwood, Franklin County, in section 26, township 8, range 14, penetrated the Clinton at 1608 ft. and found 38 ft. of limy red rock, also 8 ft. of some blood red ending at 1820 ft., making 46 ft. of red rock in all. It is reported that some good ore was cut through but this work was done by a churn drill. The hole was continued by diamond drill from here. At least 400 ft. of the formation was classified as Clinton.

Ecstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, is the owner and operator of the Kidd Creek Mine including the concentrator complex located near Timmins, Ontario. Canada, approximately 450 miles north of Toronto. The mine, concentrator and Timmins form a triangular arrangement with a 17-mile rail link connecting the mine and concentrator and both of these facilities 18 and 14 miles respectively by road from Timmins. A core drilling program in the spring of 1964 established the presence of a large massive sulphide orebody which was to become the Kidd Creek Mine. Texas Gulf Sulphur had been conducting an intensive search for base metal in various parts of Northern Ontario and Quebec since 1957. Of several thousand anomalies detected in airborne electromagnetic surveys, several hundred warranted ground inspection, but only one of more than sixty drilled became a commercial orebody, the Kidd Creek Mine. The geophysical exploration work has been well covered in a paper written and presented by Van Donohoo, presently a Vice-President of T.G.S., at the American Mining Congress in San Francisco in October 1969. GEOLOGY The orebody lies within a series of overturned rhyolitic flows and pyroelastics with a major peridotite intrusive to the east. The hangingwall and footwall are composed chiefly of intermediate volcanics, andesite and dacite. The southern end of the orebody appears to terminate abruptly against greywacke while the north end is bifurcated and the structure obscured.

Basically, the Buckley-Leverett theory involves two systems which are similar in nature but are differentiated by time. These systems may be described by the fractional flow and frontal advance equations which essentially characterize the mechanics of oil movement while being expelled from the reservoir. The fractional flow equation originally developed by Leverettl may be expressed in the more usable form The development of this equation is based on Darcy's law describing fluid flow through porous media and applies to the flow at only one point (it is a point function). For simplification, the fractional flow equation is written in the above form because the capillary forces always increase the fractional flow of the displacing phase regardless of the direction of flow or the displacing phase. If, for simplicity, the effects due to gravity and capillary pressure differences are neglected, the fraction of the displacing fluid, f, at any point in the flowing stream is related to the properties of the system by 1 Thus, it is seen that in the absence of capillary and gravitational effects, fd for a given sand and fluids varies only with saturation and pressure. The magnitude of the viscosity ratio, —a has an effective range (range of about 30) in the system where gas is displacing oil and a much smaller range for water displacing oil. In order to make the fractional flow equation more versatile, it is necessary to connect the fractional flow at a given point and saturation with time. This problem was approached by Buckley and Leverett" who developed the frontal advance equation, Eq. 3 states that the rate of advance of a plane that has a fixed saturation, Sd, is proportional to the change in composition of the flow stream caused by a small change in the saturation of the displacing fluid. It is, essentially, a transformation of a material balance equation representing the net rate of accumulation of the displacing phase within a homogeneous sand block. This accumulation is proportional to the difference between the rate at which the displacing fluid enters the sand and that at which it leaves. Eq. 3 describes the velocity with which a plane of constant displacing phase saturation advances through a porous system. Buckley and Leverett," Babson,' Kern," Welge, and others have adequately discussed the basic mechanism and application of the fractional flow and frontal advance equations. APPLICATIONS OF THE FRONTAL ADVANCE THEORY TO PETROLEUM RECOVERY Two general applications of the Buckley-Leverett frontal advance theory involve the system in which the oil is being displaced by an expanding gas cap overlying the oil zone and that in which the oil is being displaced by water. Displacement by Gas in the Presence of an Immobile Water Saturation A system in which gas is the displacing phase may be thought of as having two forces effecting the displacement process. These forces are the gravitational force and that force exerted by the displacing gas. The gravitational effects control the displacing efficiency of the gas. The gravitational effect will be less at higher rates of flow, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the displacement of the oil by the gas. The more efficient displacements occur at flow rates which are less than the gravity free fall rate. Capillary forces can be neglected without materially changing the magnitude of the gas saturation. The Mile Six pool is used herein to illustrate the calculating procedures in evaluating gas drive-gravity drainage field perfomlance. These calculations represent the determination of the gas-oil contact when the distribution of the hydrocarbon pore volume is considered. Two methods

A method has been developed for the accurate calculation of the cricondentberm and cricondenbar temperatures of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures of known composition. The mixtures may contain any number of components including paraffins and isoparaffins, olefins, acetylenes, naphthenes and aromatics. This approach is based upon the mole fraction of the low-boiling component in the mixture and graphically presents the ratios of the cricondentherm and cricondenbar temperatures to the pseudocritical temperature as {unctions of a boiling-point parameter. The only requirements are the critical temperature, normal boiling point and the approximate vapor pressure behavior of each component. For mixtures of more than two constituents a stepwise calculation procedure is necessary where the pseudocritical temperature is based upon the critical temperature of the pure low-boiling component and upon the actual cricondentherm or cricondenbar temperature of the mixture of all the remaining higher-boiling components. From an analysis of 22 binary systems (123 compositionsl, the average deviation of calculated cricondentherm temperatures from reported values is 0.87 per cent, based on degrees Rankine; and for 10 multicomponent mixtures containing from three to six components, the average deviation is 0.98 per cent. From an analysis of 18 binary systems (104 compositions) the average deviation of calculated cricondenbar temperatures from reported values is 0. 79 per cent; and for 15 multicomponent mixtures, 1.47 per cent. Equations, derived from the graphical relationships, are presented which enable rapid calculations for both binary and multicomponent systems. INTRODUCTION With the increasing tendency towards the use of high pressure processes, the need for an accurate method of calculation of the properties of a multicomponent hydrocarbon mixture in the critical region is becoming more essential. Critical region phase relations are also significant in gas condensate reservoirs, for which a knowledge of the fluid phase boundaries and regions of retrograde condensation make it possible to evaluate optimum operating conditions. The possibility of liquefaction in the underground structure may be established, and information on the feasibility of the use of repressurizing may be determined. A typical phase diagram for a multicomponent hydrocarbon mixture is presented as Fig. 1. This figure also shows the regions of retrograde behavior encountered by following lines AB and AC. If accurate methods of calculating the temperatures and pressures at the critical, cricondentherm (maximum temperature) and cricondenbar (maximum pressure) points of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures of known composition were available, it would be possible to estimate closely the entire phase diagram of any mixture. Several methods have been presented in the literature for the estimation of the critical temperatures and pressures of multicomponent mixtures containing all types of hydrocarbons and including the fixed gases.4-8,21 Considering the cricondentherm and cricondenbar points, the work is more limited. IT is generally accepted that the martensitic start temperature (Ms) can be determined by resistivity measurements and is that temperature where the resistivity vs temperature curve on cooling first deviates from a straight line.1-4 Both Titchener and ever' and pops5 have used resistivity measurements to follow the martensitic transformation in b1 Cu-Zn and ternary Cu-Zn-based b-phase alloys, respectively. Actually because of the nature of their measurements the temperature of minimum resistivity (M) was used by these authors to determine "Ms" . Also, due to experimental difficulties in detecting M, with resistivity measurements, Pops and Massalski 8 determined M, by optical microscopy. The present communication is concerned with high-precision, low-temperature resistivity measurements which reveal a definite M, temperature which differs from the temperature of minimum resistivity (M). It is also shown that M is merely the result of the geometry of the percent-transformation curve and the temperature coefficient of resistivity of the alloy. In other words, it will be demonstrated that M has no apparent significance (except that it denotes a temperature at which some percent of martensite can be detected in a given alloy). Alloy specimens were made by melting 99.999 pct Cu and 99.9999 pct Zn in sealed and evacuated quartz tubes and homogenizing them at 601PC for 300 hr. After the alloy was cold-rolled into foils suitable for resistivity measurements, it was quenched in ice water from 871PC. The chemical analysis showed a zinc content of 38.8 wt pct. The cooling rate during the martensite transformation was 1°C per min and was controlled with a thermistor. Electrical resistivity measurements were made using a K-3 type potentiometer; the reproducibility of the resistivity values was better than 0.03 pct. Temperatures were measured with a thermocouple to an accuracy of better than 0.2° C. Fig. 1 shows the resistivity vs temperature curves of the martensitic transformation in B1 Cu-Zn for both cooling and heating. FEW mining schools possess an art gallery and certainly none can equal the collection of paintings depicting the mineral industries now hanging in the comparatively new building of the School of Mineral Industries at The Pennsylvania State College. Dean Steidle, who conceived the idea, early this spring boasted of 55 paintings in the collection, by 24 different artists, the gallery being appraised at $18,000. Since then, eleven additional paintings have been added. Opportunity will he presented for an inspection at the meeting of the Industrial Minerals Division, to be held at the College, Sept. 24-26.

THE several studies concerned with the annealing of thin nickel films have largely been restricted to films of a single thickness.1-4 It is well-known, however, that both physical and mechanical properties depend upon film thickness.5, 6 The strength-thickness relations found in vapor-deposited nickel films in the annealed and as-deposited states, as an example, are at least partially due to the density and arrangement of imperfections within the films.7, 8 For these reasons, the annealing characteristics of thin nickel films as a function of thickness were investigated. Electrical resistance was chosen to monitor annealing behavior since resistance changes are partially dependent upon defect structure. In addition, the equations predicting film resistivity as a function of thickness are already available.9, 10 Further advantages afforded by electrical-resistance measurements are its adaption to continuous readings during annealing and its relative simplicity. Nickel films were vapor-deposited, at average rates of 60Å per sec, on Vycor substrates held at room temperature in vacuums of about 10-5 torr. Afterwards, deposition-thickness measurements were made using a multiple-beam interferometric technique. A more detailed description of deposition procedures and the interferometer appear elsewhere.7, 8 The four-probe method was employed in measuring electrical resistance since this technique measures film resistance without contributions from lead wires and contacts. Resistance measurements were made before, during, and after annealing to temperatures of 700°C under vacuums of approximately 10-4 torr. Measurements were made every 25°C or more often when necessitated by unusual resistance changes. Cooling and heating rates were maintained at approximately 5°C per min.
