A theoretical and experimental laboratory study has shown that the rate of breaking of oversized particles in a ball mill is proportional to 1) the concentration of such particles, and 2) the area of the balls, provided that the balls are larger than a certain size relative to the particles. If all undersized material were removed as formed, the rate of breaking would be almost independent of the quantity in the mill. Rate equations are given which are similar to those for zero, first, and second order reactions. Deviations of small balls from the equation for a second order phenomena are quantified by a factor called "nipping efficiency." Some data are correlated by a dimension-less equation, which is used to estimate nipping efficiencies from data not in the correlation. The investigation described here was undertaken after a literature survey revealed that little was known concerning the mechanism of breaking of particles within a ball mill and the effect of this mechanism upon grinding rates. One paper, by Roberts1 , offered a theory concerning the mechanism of breaking, and a rate equation for the breaking of particles larger than some size to particles smaller than that size. That paper provided the starting point for a theoretical and experimental investigation of grinding under carefully controlled conditions. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS In his paper on the probability theory of ball mill grinding, Roberts theorized that "... a given expenditure of power leads either to a certain number of point to point blows per bp-hr or to a certain distance of line contact per hp-hr ..." He assumed that the balls touch each other during each blow or during moving contact. Then he said that a volume of pulp, dependent upon the size being considered, would be covered per minute within which all oversized particles would be crushed to particles smaller than that size. Naturally, the higher the concentration of oversized particles in the pulp, the higher the rate of which they would be broken. From this reasoning Roberts obtained the differential equation -dC/dt = k hp/ton C (1) where k is a constant for any size of particle, density of particle, and moisture content of pulp. C is the percentage of oversize in the material to be ground, t is the time, and hp/ton is the power input per ton of material in the mill. He then integrated the equation to log Co/Ct = k/2.3 hp/ton t , where Co and Ct are the percentage of oversize at time zero and t respectively. By always using the same quantity of material in a mill and assuming that it required constant power to run the mill, he was able to combine the horsepower per ton factor with the other constants to give an equation for a first order rate.

THE purpose of this chapter is to present a general outline of the basic open-hearth process for the benefit of students, practicing open-hearth operators, and metallurgists who wish to review the subject. The discussion is limited to a description of the sequence and purpose of the operations, illustrated by data and examples. Subsequent chapters deal with more detailed and fundamental studies of the subject. The function of the basic open-hearth furnace is to convert various types of ferrous material into finished steel of given com- position and quality. In comparison with other steelmaking methods, the basic open-hearth process is one of the most versa- tile, both from the standpoint of the raw materials that can be used and the types of steel that can be produced. The process can be considered as a sequence involving melting, refining, and deoxidation. With some types of liquid-metal charges, the melting stage is not present, but refining and deoxidation in varying degrees are fundamental features of the process. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BASIC OPEN-HEARTH PROCESS The first consideration in open-hearth practice is the type of charge on which the operation is based. This consists of three components-fluxing, oxidizing, and metallic materials. Fluxes. In the basic process the fluxing material is primarily lime, added in the form of either limestone (CaC03) or burnt lime (CaO) . This is supplemented by magnesia (MgO) and lime from the furnace bottom and banks. The function of these fluxes is to form a slag with the silica (SiO2) , manganese oxide (MnO), iron oxides (FeO and Fe203), and phosphorus oxide (P205) that are produced by the oxidation of varying amounts of the silicon, manganese, iron, and phosphorus in the charge during melting and refining. The slag, composed of the basic fluxes and the neutral and acid oxides, floats on top of the steel bath when the charge is melted. The first commercially available portable gamma ray-neutron beryllium detector, the Rerylometer, was developed by the same group that developed the first practical portable scintillation counter, the Scintillo-meter. This group includes Professor George Brownell, of the Geology Department of the University of Manitoba in winnipeg, and his associates, K. I. Roulston, R. w. Pringle, and R. L. Funt, of the Physics and Engineering Departments of the University of Manitoba. A prototype model was tested in the field by Dr. Brownell during the summer of 1958. Commercial production was undertaken shortly thereafter by Nuclear Enterprises Ltd., of Winnipeg, and a license for manufacture and distribution in the U.S. was granted to Isotopes Specialties Co., of Burbank, California, a division of Nuclear Corporation of America. Early in 1959, we were retained by the 'Mining Division of Minerva Oil Co. to Legin a search throughout North America for minable deposits of beryllium, and to train members of their permanent staff to continue the program. The project included literature sur-veys, interviews with members of various federal, state, and provincial agencies, scanning of our own collection of suites of specimens from various mineral occurrences, and the examination of deposits in the field. The value of a beryllium detector to this program was obvious and arrangements were made to procure one as soon as possible, which resulted in our obtaining and using the first instrument that was produced commercially in the U. S. In addition to the commercially available Berylometer, Mr. William Vaughan and his associates, of the U. S. Geological Survey Geophysics Division, in Denver, have developed and tested several experimental instruments based on the same principles. DETECTOR Principles The detection of beryllium is based on the fact that "hard" gamma rays (1.6 MEV and geater), such as those produced by Antimony convert ordinary beryllium (Be9) to Be8 , with the release of a neutron. The neutrons are counted by a scintillator designed to favor neutron responses while suppressing those of gamma rays. 'The instrument is completely selective for beryllium. No other element can interfere. Instrunlentation The Rerylometer itself, which is cylindrical, is about 8 inches in diameter, 13 inches high, and weighs about 11 pounds. (Figs. 1, 2). The principal components include: 1. A disc of wax to moderate (or "thermalize") neutrons. 2. A boron-enriched polyester-zinc-sulphide fluorescent screen. This material produces strong flashes when struck by thermalized neutrons but only weak flashes from gamma rays. 3. A photomultiplier tube. 4. An electronic circuit, complete with one srnall 71/2-volt dry battery. A THEORETICAL consideration of the mechanics of various water-flooding systems with the viewpoint of comparing their relative merits involves the study of two fundamental properties of such systems. On the one hand, it is important to determine the efficiency of the flood as measured by the percentage of the total area that is swept out by the encroaching water before water actually reaches the output wells. This is really a measure of the regional tendency of the water to "bypass" the oil. On the other hand, the various systems must be compared from the viewpoint of their resistances which determine the rate of fluid production obtainable for given pressures maintained at the water input wells. The first of these questions has been studied and very definite answers have been obtained by means of simple electrolytic models.1 These models showed that, in an ideal system, the percentages of the areas flooded out before water reaches the output wells are about 57 per cent for the direct line-drive flood (the input and output wells being equally spaced and placed in alternate parallel lines), 74 per cent for the regular five-spot network, and 79 per cent for the seven-spot network. With respect to the efficiency of the usual flooding arrangements, they are, therefore, given quite accurately by the above numbers. With regard to the resistances of the flooding networks, electrical conduction models have also been used successfully2 and are well adapted to the problem of determining experimentally the pressure distribution and streamlines, or over-all resistances of specific flooding networks. However, such models do not permit readily a study of the effect of changing dimensions or configuration within a network, since a new model must be made up for each set of dimensions considered.

UNDER the able leadership of Samuel H. Dolbear, the Committee on Nonmetallic Minerals furnished a program of sixteen papers comprising three sessions. An outstanding accomplishment in technology presented at the first session by Benjamin L. Miller and C. H. Breerwood is the application of flotation to the purification of limestone used in cement manufacture. In place of selective quarrying to provide high-grade raw material, the quarry-run stone is pulverized and treated in froth flotation cells for removal of free silica and mica. Some advantages are cheaper quarrying, more complete utilization of quarry rock, avoidance of purchasing high calcium stone, lower fuel cost and improvement in the finished cement. Paul M. Tyler presented the general subject of milling methods as applied to nonmetal lies. He pointed out the importance of some of the more recent refinements in ore dressing, and urged the need of a wider appreciation of their possibilities. Cansiderable time and effort frequently are expended to establish, with a degree of confidence, the PVT behavior of pure substances. In particular, a great deal of experimental information contributed by a number of investigators is available in the literature. The data of each investigator, although significant in themselves, cannot be used with a high degree of confidence until they are compared with the continuum of information presented by others. Current interest in thermodynamic and transport properties, for not only the gaseous state but the con-densed state as well, requires that PVT infarmation be presented for both regions. The density dependence on temperature and pressure, when presented as a continuum, is of considerable value in itself, especially since the available equations of state fail to properly account for the PVT behavior in the condensed state. For this reason and to incorporate PVT data recently presented in the literature, this investigation was carried out. In their studies concerned with the thermodynamic properties of methane, Matthews and Hurd in 1946 utilized the data of Kvalnes and Gaddy and Olds, Reamer, Sage and Lacey to establish the PVT behavim of methane in the superheated region and the saturated liquid densities of Keyes, Taylor and Smithl in conjunction with the Clapeyron equation to develop the densities for the saturated envelope. Current activity sponsored by API Project No. 44 under the direction of F. D. Rossini has led to a tabular presentation of compressibility factors for gaseous methane in the superheated region.la These values were obtained by using smoothed residuals, developed from experimental data and the Ben edict-Webb-Rubin equation,' to establish internally consistent compressibility factors for the real gas. This approach offers probably the most precise presentation of PVT information for gaseous methane to date. The PVT behavior of methane also can be represented accurately by equations of state such as the Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation or the Martin-Hoa equation.' These equations, although valuable for analytically representing the PVT behavior, lack precision in the compressed-liquid region. The PVT data available in the literature for methane were utilized to obtain reduced densities that are presented in Figs. 1 and 2 as functions of reduced temperature with parameters of reduced pressure. The critical constants utilized for methane are those reported by Kobe and Lynn." These critical values, T, = 191.1°K, PC = 45.8 atm and p, = 0.162 gm/cc, produce a critical compressibility factor, z, = 0.289. The grain boundary adsorption of solutes as a function of bulk concentration and solution temperature was studied using internal-frictimz techniques. From the variation of the cor-responding energy of activation for the Phenomenon, the inter-actior2 energy between a solute atom and a high-angle boundary was calculated. Interaction energies in the range of 0.3 ev were obtained, and were used to obtain the actual concentration of solute at the grain boundary. In corroboralory creel, studies the direct grain boundary contribution to the total creep strain was measured. It was found that the interface creep varied with the type and magnitude of the solute adsorbed. Subscribing to the theory of their being energetically favorable sites at the grain boundary for solutes of both Positive and negative size deviations, ternaries were investigated in Which solutes of both types were present. A marked increase in the resistance to grain boundary creep was manifested. THE major difficulty which has been encountered in investigations of the grain boundary segregation of solutes has been the lack of a sufficiently sensitive method of measuring the amount of adsorbed solute at the boundary. For the general case of a high-angle boundary, no direct method of measuring the adsorption at the boundary has been found to date. Internal friction has been used in several studies of grain boundary adsorption1-3 and although it is somewhat indirect, it was demonstrated to have the necessary sensitivity. In this investigation the authors have used internal-friction techniques in conjunction with a study of the grain boundary contribution to the total creep strain. As both parts of the investigation were performed on the same specimens it was possible to combine a highly sensitive technique with a somewhat more direct method in order to obtain information about the adsorption phenomenon. From internal-friction studies the rate of increase of the activation energy was observed to be a function of the difference in size between the solute and solvent atoms. It was proposed that if Gibbs' adsorption isotherm is considered, i.e., where r is the excess solute at the boundary, c is the bulk concentration, and ay/ac is the change in grain boundary energy with bulk concentration, then AH b/ac must vary in the same way as ay/ac and therefore In this way a relative measure of the grain boundary adsorption of solutes is directly obtainable from in-ternal-friction studies. If the previous work in the field of grain boundary adsorption of solutes is examined, certain apparent information is desirable if the phenomenon is to be understood. The most important questions that must be asked are as follows: 1) Is the adsorption of solutes at the grain boundary an equilibrium process? 2) Can the Mott model of the grain boundary be used as a basis of setting up an elastic interaction between the grain boundary and solute atoms? 3) Is it possible to obtain an exact measure of the excess solute at the grain boundary as a function of temperature and bulk concentration rather than merely a relative measure of the adsorption 4) Are the conclusions obtained from an indirect method such as internal-friction studies meaningful in considering gross grain boundary effects such as creep? There are two methods of determining the fusibility or refractoriness of fire-clays, the theoretical and the experimental. In the former, conclusions are drawn from the chemical composition; in the latter, from the changes which the clay undergoes when subjeoted to intense heat. It is well to use both methods, beginning with the actual heat-test and explaining the results obtained from this by the help of the chemical analysis. In discussing the subject, however, it is better to reverse this order. I. The Theoretical Method.* Leaving out the hygroscopic and combined waters and any organic matter, as not directly affecting the fire-resisting property, the refractory constituents of fire-clay are alumina and silica, and the fluxing constituents magnesia, lime, soda, potash and ferric oxide. According to Bischof,† alumina is the least fusible component, and silica follows close upon it. If, however, a mixture of the two be heated, it will be found that its melting-point is much lower than that of alumina, as a silicate will then have been formed. The way in which silica affects the refractoriness of alumina has been strikingly presented by Seger 1 in a diagram reproduced in Fig. 1. Electrical ad thermal-conductivity measurements have been made on titanium and 6 titanium alloys. The following expression was derived for calculating thermal conductivity from electrical conductivity: K = 0.626 s T x 10-8 + 0.00497 where K = thermal conductivity, cal sec-1 cm-2 cm0C-1 s = electrical conductivity, ohm-]cm-1 T = temperature, deg Kelvin This expression gives calculated thermal conductivities that are not in error by more than 10 pct from the experimental values for A-55 titanium and the 6 alloys measured; namely, A-110AT, C-110M, C-130AM, Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-140A, and Ti-155A, which are representative of the presently available commercial a and a-ß titanium alloys. THERMAL conduction in a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid is accomplished by energy diffusion from molecule to molecule, a relatively slow process. For this reason, such materials have a low thermal conductivity. When a material is crystalline, there is in addition a heat transfer by a vibratory motion of the crystal lattice. It is the contribution of this lattice conduction that makes a crystal a much better conductor than a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid. Lattice conduction, however, does not account for the relatively enormous thermal conductivity of a metal. This is explained by the freedom of movement of valence electrons. These valence electrons drift in a metal in a direction toward a drop in electrical potential and, to a lesser degree, in the direction of a temperature drop in the metal. Since both the electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal depend upon the presence of free electrons, there should be some relatively simple relation between the two. Wiedemann and Franz in 1653 first discovered an approximate empirical relation between the electrical and thermal conductivities of metals at the same temperature. This ratio varies appreciably with temperature, and Lorenz later showed that by adding a temperature factor to the Wiedemann-Franz ratio the value of K/(s T) is constant, where K is the thermal conductivity, a the electrical conductivity, and T the absolute temperature. This Lorenz constant shows a greater variation for alloys than it does for pure metals, the ratio increasing slightly as the proportion of alloying elements increases. It has been found that a closer correlation between electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity can be obtained by means of an equation of the form K - A s T + B [1] where A and B are constants. In this equation the term AsT is the contribution of electronic conduction and B is the contribution of lattice conduction to the total thermal conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS Electrical-resistivity and thermal-conductivity measurements on titanium and 6 titanium alloys serve as the basis for determining an equation of the K = AsT + B type for titanium alloys. Specimens—Table I shows nominal compositions of the 7 metals on which electrical and thermal conductivities were measured. The electrical and thermal-conductivity specimens for each alloy were taken from stock of the same heat and usually from adjacent sections of the same bar. In the presence of oxygen, galena is oxidized in an aqueous medium containing ammonium acetate in accordance with the following reaction: PbS + 1/2 0, + 2 NH~Ac -» PbAc, + So + 2 NH: + H2O. This reaction was studied in an autoclave under oxygen pressure by polarographic measurement of the concentration of lead ion in solution. Oxidation rate is parabolic. The reaction products are lead acetote and elemental sulfur, the latter forming a film on the galena crystal. Reaction kinetics appear to be determined by the diffusion of lead from the galena phase to the solution interface through the film of sulfur. RECENT applications of pressure leaching on a commercial scale have emphasized the metallurgical importance of the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aqueous media by oxygen under pressure. Research experience has shown that sulfates, thio-nates, and metal oxides are the products of humid oxidation of sulfide minerals in basic solutions. The metal oxides may be solubilized in the presence of a complexing ion.' Certain oxide minerals are also amenable to treatment by this type of oxidation.' Several kinetic studies have been made of reactions of this type. Stenhouse' found that pyrite (FeS?) oxidized in a sodium hydroxide solution to produce a soluble sulfate and an insoluble layer of iron oxide and that the kinetics of the reaction were controlled by oxygen diffusion through the oxide layer. Andersen' studied the oxidation of galena (PbS) in a sodium hydroxide solution under oxygen pressure. He found the lead and sulfur to be simultaneously oxidized to produce plum bite ions and sulfate ions, and that the reaction rate was proportional to the surface area of the galena. The kinetics appeared to be determined by the reaction of oxygen and water with the galena surface. In each of the above reactions the metal and sulfur components of the mineral were oxidized simultaneously and at equal rates. In the present study the alkaline medium has been replaced by an approximately neutral solution of ammonium acetate in which lead sulfate is soluble. Under the conditions no sulfate was produced and no sulfur could be detected in the solution. The metal component of the mineral was solubilized and the liberated sulfur remained as a film of elemental sulfur on the surface of the galena crystal. A kinetic study of this reaction was undertaken to establish the kinetic mechanism and to determine the rate controlling step. Specific reaction rates were determined by oxidizing crystals of galena of measured surface areas in an autoclave maintained at the desired temperature and oxygen pressure. The rate of reaction was followed by measuring the concentration of lead in the ammonium acetate solution with a cathode ray polarograph, employing stationary platinum electrodes incorporated in the autoclave. A quantitative method for evaluating density of slime coatings has been developed and applied to formation of iron oxide slime coatings on quartz and on corundum. Slime coating density is related to flotation recovery and to properties of the electrical double layer at mineral surfaces. IN spite of considerable study, the nature of slime coatings in flotation is still not completely understood. However, phenomena that control floc-culation and dispersion of colloidal systems are now interpreted in terms of electrical double layers.",' Colloids will flocculate even though the particles carry the same charge, but when two dispersed colloids of opposite charge are mixed. flocculation ensues even more rapidly. Analogous phenomena seem responsible for slime coating on minerals in flotation systems. To shed new light on the issue it was considered desirable to devise a tool that would measure slime coatings. The usual method has been to examine photographs of presumably representative surfaces, after. an intervening washing in running water. But such an examination is non-quantitative, and the changes in chemical environment represented by the washing may have removed the slime coatings that existed during flotation. To provide the possibility for a correlation with electrical double layer phenomena, the experiments were made with quartz, corundum, and iron oxide, for which elec-trokinetic data are available.'-" Since the properties of the electrical double layers of these oxides depend on the pH of the solution, pH will be the most important variable. Furthermore, because the zero point of charge for silica, iron oxide, and alumina occurs at pH 3.7, 8, and 9.5, respectively, the relative charge on the slime and mineral can be changed over wide ranges. Because of its practical importance in quartz flotation, iron oxide powder was chosen as the slime. Also, its uniform composition, contrasting color, and ease of analysis make experimentation simple. In this investigation, correlation was sought between the effect on flotation recovery of slime addition and slime coating density. Materials and Methods Details are available in a thesis by Miaw." The quartz was selected from pure Brazilian crystalline quartz, crushed, sized (65/150 mesh) acid-cleaned, washed, and stored in conductivity water. The corundum (synthetic alumina of high purity prepared by Linde Co., Chicago) was crushed, sized (65/100 mesh) deslimed, boiled in nitric acid, washed, and stored in conductivity water. The iron oxide slime, reagent-grade ferric oxide (—400 mesh) from Allied Chemical & Dye Corp., was heated to 160°C, cooled, and stored in a vacuum desiccator. In the electron microscope the slime particles appeared to be about 0.3µ in size, but their large specific surface (87,900 cm per g, by gas-adsorption method, using krypton) suggests that the actual particles are smaller than 0.3r. Had they been perfect nonporous spheres, they would have had a diameter of 0.13µ.

EVERYONE enjoyed the coal meeting and found it profitable. At least your correspondent did, and those to whom he talked. Close to a hundred were there. The Coronado proved an excellent headquarters hotel, though it is two miles or more from the business district of St. Louis; its Crystal Room was suitable for the technical sessions; its Lounge adequate for registration and informal chats; its Club Caprice made an artistic setting for the informal banquet; and its Coal Hole in the basement presumably served other needs-unfortunately we passed up an invitation to find out, and never got another. To be sure, the first day of the meeting (Monday, Oct. 28) was a drizzly one, but that only served to keep people inside where they belonged. Believe it or not, the first technical session was only five minutes late in getting tinder way, with H. N. Eavenson's words of welcome. M. M. Leighton then took over the conduct of the meeting, and invited Eugene McAuliffe to read his paper on how much coal the railroads are likely to use in the future. E. G. Bailey then presented some written discussion; among other things he wondered about the success of stokers on locomotives, and whether or not the burning of coal in locomotives could not he made a cleaner operation. Mr. McAuliffe pointed out that railroads are built to haul coal rather than to burn it. Maximum firebox efficiency is often subordinated to the traffic situation. Powdered-coal firing has not been a success because of limited firebox space. Stokers have resulted in economies indirectly, because large locomotives cannot he hand-fired and stokers thus make them possible. Nowadays it is not so important to do away with smoke, cinders, and soot, because most trains are sealed up and air-conditioned.

THE appearance of the Wilfley table in 1897 marked an epoch in the art of concentration of ores. The table has merited and received an almost unprecedented measure of public approval, lasting through its whole patent life. It has been very little improved in itself, or improved upon by competitors. The new machines bidding for popular favor have been of the Wilfley family, but without ability to do markedly better work than the parent m:-chine, or to (to more work except by the use of superimposed decks, the latter having obvious disadvantages. During the past three years there has been developed at Morenci a new type or arrangement of riffles applicable to the Wilfley type of concentrating table which corrects many of the objectionable features or limitations of the older system and obviates most of the difficulties encountered with it, particularly when handling ores having a low ratio of concentration. The new type is known as the Butchart1 riffle system, and its general arrangement is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The San Manuel copper deposit is located about 45 miles northeast of Tucson. The concentrator, smelter, administration building, and other plant facilities are located about seven miles southeast of the ,nine area at the new town of Sari Manuel as shown on Figure 1 (Sketch).

X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of binary Mn-rich alloys with Ti revealed the presence of intermediate phases in this system. A binary R phase has been identified and also a phase having an a-Mn type structure. The X-ray pattern of the phase TiMn3 is presented and a tentative phase diagram for the Mn-rich portion of this binary system has been constndcted. MANGANESE-rich alloys with titanium have been subjected to thermal analysis at temperatures down to 1100°C by Hellawell and Hume-Rothery.1 Their results indicate the existence of an intermediate phase TiMn3 in this binary system. This phase appears to coexist with the Laves phase TiMn2, and with terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese, at least down to 1100°C. The above investigators did not attempt to determine the crystal structure of this phase, however. Since, by analogy to the binary systems Mn-V and Mn-Cr3 one might expect to find a phase in this region of the diagram, it seemed desirable to obtain X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys in the concentration range in question, in order to ascertain whether the sigma phase or related structures occur. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were prepared by arc-melting electrolytic manganese and iodide titanium in a water-cooled copper crucible under a helium atmosphere. Excess manganese was added to each melt in order to allow for losses incurred during melting. The alloys were then wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in evacuated quartz tubes for annealing at various temperatures, as shown in Table I, followed by quenching in cold water. Although the inside of the tubes showed evidence for some loss of manganese from the specimen during annealing, there was no evidence of any reaction between the specimen and either the molybdenum foil or the quartz tube at these temperatures. It was later found that the manganese loss was considerably reduced by annealing these alloys in sealed quartz tubes containing one atmosphere of purified argon. As an added precaution the surface of each specimen was ground off before crushing the alloys to -270 mesh powder, using a hardened steel mortar and pestle. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using either FeKa or CrKa radiation in an asymmetrical focusing camera, which gave excellent dispersion of the closely spaced lines. Pictures were also obtained using a Debye camera of 5-cm radius which provided data in the angular region not covered by the focusing camera. The alloy specimens were polished and examined metallographically, using an etchant consisting of 60 pct glycerine, 20 pct nitric acid, and 20 pct hydrofluoric acid. The 10-g buttons were in each case broken in half and found to be well-melted and free of any gross segregation. One half of certain alloy buttons was submitted to chemical analysis in the "as-cast" condition. No appreciable change in composition seemed to occur during annealing . RESULTS The X-ray pattern of alloy Ti1.17Mn0.83 was found to agree well with that of the ternary R phase which was first found in the Mo-Cr-Co system,' and re-

The enterprises based upon the industrial minerals are diversified in geologic habit, mining systems, processing techniques and marketing methods. Nevertheless, in 1972 these enterprises faced many of the same frustrations and hopes and knotty problems and crucial decisions. Volume and profits were generally improved but were uneven in extent and effect. The U.S. cement industry, for example, was unable to meet demand in major markets. It was constricted by a frozen low-level price structure, faced expensive pollution control measures and watched heavy imports penetrating its markets from several European nations, Mexico and Canada.

IT will be recalled that when educational instruction for the mineral industry began at Freiberg, at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the original aim was to organize and systematize the procedures previously followed by young men in gaining -familiarity with the technology then in use. There must have been many other ideas current, even then, as to just what a young man needed to learn in order to become capable of assuming 'responsibility for the supervision and direction of such technical work. The problem in Europe was decidedly different .from that in nineteenth-century America, because some of the European mines were actually owned and operated by the governing authority and the others were supervised, regulated, and taxed by it. The American problem was the e5cient performance of technical operations; the European one was regulatory supervision. It was natural, therefore, that in the development of educational processes in Europe stress was laid on those factors which conserved and protected the interests of the state. The study of mineralogy and geology, leading to correct judgments as to the workability and value of mineral deposits; assaying, which gave the means of quantitative measurements, as did surveying; chemistry, which furnished a better basis of understanding for assaying, mineralogy, and geology; and physics and mathematics, which are the bases for the understanding and efficient use of mechanical appliances, became the core of systematic instruction, for the mineral industry. It was early recognized that men could learn more than was already known about all of these subjects and education took on that dichotomy which still characterizes it; the teaching of established knowledge to the unlearned, and that of extending of the bounds of knowledge, now loosely termed research, which after two and a half centuries of work still shows
