ONE of a recent batch of samples from the Serra da Baliza, in the state of Parana, Brazil, contained asphalt and a dark heavy oil; and workmen on the railway from Porto União to Uruguay discovered asphalt, coming from eruptives that outcrop along the Rio de Peixe. The occurrence f asphalt in the triassic eruptives of southern Brazil, however, has been known a long time, according to Dr. Gonzaga de Campos. It is generally believed that the Botacatú sandstone is always a hard vitrified rock, from the metamorphic action f. the overflowing eruptive contacts. In this region, however, the contact metamorphism is almost nil; the sandstone is slightly hardened in a narrow zone about 20 to 30 cm. wide. In many places, the sandstone is so friable as to be easily reduced to sand, which is used-.in, mortar for building in Guara-puava and Palmas. South and west from Porto União,. this bench of sandstone is about. 50 m. thick, and is capped by a heavy bed. f basic eruptives, many of which are amygdaloids. Dr. Geo: P. Merrill, after studying the triassic eruptives collected by the Coal Commission, reached the conclusion that. "All these rocks are of typical basalt-diabases, not in any essential different other than in structure. An interesting mineralogical phase is its paucity in olivine, which in many cases is completely lacking. Professor Hussak, who carefully studied these rocks and their accessory minerals, decided that in the dikes they are granular (diabase) and, that in the lava sheets, porphyritic (augite-porphyrite or melaphyre), and that the latter pass evidently to normal diabases and are always typical of effusive rocks. The examination f many slides from dikes and sheets leads us to adopt the opinion of Professor Hussak; the rocks of the dikes are of ophitic structure, while that of the sheets show a great variety f structure and may vary from almost granular to basaltic. The great paucity in olivine had been noted by Hussak, who classes as melaphyres, the porphyritic triassic rocks in Brazil which contain olivine.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) THE first successful bucket-elevator dredge to operate in California was put in commission at Oroville in March, 1898. There had been numerous previous attempts at dredging, but none of the earlier boats proved a success. The gold-miners in California early conceived the idea of a machine to dig gravel from the beds and bars of auriferous streams that were inaccessible by the methods then employed, and it was only a few months after the discovery of gold in California that such a machine was. shipped around Cape Horn from New York to San Francisco. This was, however, but the forerunner of many failures in gold-dredging, and was soon at the bottom of the Sacramento river. During succeeding years many other unsuccessful attempts were made, and it was not until 1897 that a dredge of the single-lift bucket-elevator type was floated on the Yuba river. This dredge was built by the Risdon Iron Works for R. H. Postlethwaite, and would probably have been a success if it had been operated on some of the rich Oroville ground instead of in a turbulent stream, where the dredge was wrecked during a flood, and was not repaired. Fig. 1 is a sketch-map of California, showing gold-dredging areas. It is not my intention to narrate in detail the history of the early failures in gold-dredging, and the various steps in the development of the modern boat, but merely to touch upon this in a general way, and to call attention to the wide difference in capacity and operating-cost between the first successful dredge, with an actual capacity of 600 cu. yd. per day-though its rated capacity was in excess of this-and the present modern dredge with 15-cu. ft. buckets, and an average capacity of 250,000 cu. .yd. per month. An implicit numerical method is presented for simulating the differential and algebraic relations governing one-dimensional three-phase flow in porous media. The method is based upon compositional representation of the hydrocarbon system. Variable physical properties and water-oil capillary forces are included in the formulation; however, the effect of gravity is ignored. The effects of changing composition and mass transfer are considered through the use of known phase behavior concepts and correlations. The differential and algebraic equations and the numeric approximations to these equations are presented, and the computing algorithm is discussed in detail. This method is used to simulate a single-phase, two hydrocarbon-component gas displacement laboratory experiment. The method is also applied in simulating a solution gas drive and a gas injection problem using a reservoir oil represented as a nine-component mixture. For comparative purposes, the latter two problems also are examined with a one-dimensional volumetric model. The results of the simulation of the laboratory experiment demonstrate the relevance of this method to problems wherein the effects of mass transfer significantly enter the displacement process. The comparison of the results of the volumetric and compositional methods applied to a reservoir system illustrates not only the advantages and benefits derived from examining the hydrocarbon system composition, but also the necessity of this approach in application to a general reservoir problem. INTRODUCTION The advent of large memory, high-speed digital computers enabled reservoir engineers and mathematicians to pool their knowledge in the development of sophisticated techniques for the prediction of oil and gas reservoir performance. These techniques have progressed from volumetric and trend analysis calculations to the development of "mathematical models", or reservoir simulators. These latter models, in general, utilize finite difference approximations to the rather complex partial differential equations that mathematically describe the physics and thermodynamics of fluid flow in porous media. Many forms of this "model" type are available today, and much of the recent literature has been devoted to either improving known methods or developing new techniques for use in these prediction methods. The more advanced techniques in use at this time consist of the solution of differential and algebraic relations that describe a reservoir geometry in one, two or three dimensions and that incorporate reservoir hydrocarbon and water fluid systems that obey specified physical laws, having properties that might easily be measured in the laboratory. This type of model utilizes formation volume factors and other volumetric data, expressed directly as functions of pressure, to represent the reservoir fluid system. Experience gained with this type of simulator, commonly known as a "beta-factor model", has indicated that the approach has many outstanding defects, most of them due to the assumption that those properties measured in the laboratory completely describe the behavior of the fluid system throughout the life of the project under study. The effects of varying hydrocarbon composition and mass transfer between the phases of this hydrocarbon system must, by definition, be ignored. These defects, which may often be ignored in

In the field of mineral processing, although many operations are applied to suspensions of ore particles in fluids, there is a lack of fundamental knowledge relative to the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. Previously proposed equations, based on the Ostwald-de Waele (power-law) model for non-Newtonian fluids, are exam ined in the turbulent flow region relative to a number of pertinent variables and their effects on the movement of immersed bodies. As more knowledge is acquired in regard to the effects of suspension variables on the rheological properties, useful relationships may be proposed to allow predictions of conditions to achieve optimum results for engineering purposes. In the field of minerals processing, many operations are applied to suspensions of ore particles in fluids. The differential movement of solids of various sizes and densities in suspensions is of utmost importance to gravity concentration, wet classification, flotation, hydrometallurgy, and pipeline transport of solids. The subject is also of importance to other branches of engineering; for example, those involved with soil mechanics, ceramic slips, and oil-well drilling fluids. There is a lack of fundamental knowledge relative to the flow resistance encountered by immersed bodies moving through solid-liquid suspensions. The problems encountered in the direct application of the well-known Stokes and Newton's Laws to non-Newtonian systems have been examined in a previous paper.' Equations were proposed based on the Ostwald-de Waele (power-law) model for non-Newtonian fluids. This present paper examines these equations in the turbulent flow region relative to a number of pertinent variables and their effects on the movement of immersed bodies. It is thought that, as more knowledge is acquired as to the effects of suspension variables on the rheological properties, useful relationships may be proposed to allow prediction of conditions to achieve optimum results for engineering purposes. The purpose of this paper is to make an initial assessment of the nature and magnitude of pertinent suspension variables. In order to avoid too voluminous a document, the examination of kinetics and mechanisms will be omitted at this time. THEORY A Newtonian fluid is defined as a fluid in which the stress is proportional to the rate of strain, 2 i.e.: H = viscosity; see Table I. for list of symbols The following equations are conventionally used to assess the motion of spherical particles moving under laminar and turbulent flow conditions through Newtonian fluids: When these relationships are applied in practice to suspensions, the liquid density is substituted by a composite suspension density, and viscosity is usually taken as that of the suspending liquid or an approximated "apparent viscosity." However, suspensions are non-Newtonian in character3 and thus, more than one viscosity parameter is required to describe their behavior. A number of models have been proposed for non-Newtonian fluids;2,4 among these the simplest is the Ostwaldde Waele or power-law model for incompressible fluids which for one dimensional flow may be reduced to:

The seismic wave produced by an explosive is very important in blasting. A true understanding of the wave is only important when considering possible structural damage to buildings located near the blast, but it is also of primary importance when considering rock fragmentation. Because of the importance of the seismic wave to fragmentation, a finda-mental study of the seismic wave and its effect was made at the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co.'s mine at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico. Strain gages were used to measure the strain in the rock when nearby explosive charges were detonated. The variance in the circuit voltage caused by changes in the resistance of the strain gage was measured with an oscilloscope and recorded with a Polaroid camera. CONFINED DRILLHOLE CHARGES To record the seismic wave from a confined drillhole explosive charge, a gage was cemented to the bottom of a 4-in diam drillhole. The horizontal gage hole and nine horizontal charge holes were drilled perpendicular to the center line of the 2-39 drift and 4 ft above the floor. The gage hole was 29 in. deep, and the charge holes were drilled so that each bottomed 1 in. deeper than the gage hole. The gage was installed with its axis horizontal and parallel to the 2-39 drift. The charge holes had the following horizontal distances from the gage: hole 3, 3 ft; hole 4, 4 ft; hole 5, 5 ft; hole 9, 9 ft; hole 10, 10 ft; hole 14, 14 ft; and hole 15, 15 ft. Figs. 1 and 2 show the relationships of the gage and the charge holes. Charges of 80 pct special gelatin, which weighed 50, 100, and 150 g were exploded in the charge holes and the seismic waves were recorded. All charges were stemmed with 200 g of mud and detonated with an electric blasting cap. Fig. 3 shows the recorded seismic waves. The reflected components of the waves were too weak to be objectional on these records. Table I shows the data taken from the wave forms. The approximate average velocity of a wave with a 9-ft travel distance was 12,900 fps. Since different charge weights were used, it was necessary to scale the data. The scaled maximum compress ion-strain data and the scaled maximum tens ion-strain data are shown in Figs. 4 and 5, respectively. Figs. 6 and 7 show the strain-distance data from Figs. 4 and 5 converted to a 1-lb charge. The results showed that the wave consisted of an initial compression pulse followed by a tension pulse. The amplitude of the tension pulse approached the amplitude of the compression pulse as the distance between the gage and the shot increased. The decay rate of the seismic wave is very important in the evaluation of the blasting characteristics of a rock. When high-amplitude stresses are produced, as in rock fragmentation, the rate of decay is much more rapid than when small amplitude stresses are produced. In underground mine blasting, the burdens are usually not greater than 6 ft and the decay is very rapid. The rapid seismic-wave decay rate in the fragmentation range means that in practice, if the minimum weight of powder is used to break a specified burden, only a very

In 1946 Littlefield, Gray and Godbold published a thorough geologic description of the West Edmond Hunton Lime reservoir, located in Central Oklahoma, and discussion of its early performance.l They stressed implications of the nature of the reservoir rock on performance to be expected with production both by natural means and by pressure maintenance with gas injection. The essence of their analysis was that presence of an extensive interconnected system of fractures and solution channels constituting about 10 percent of the total reservoir void space in otherwise very low permeability reservoir rock would result in severe channeling of naturally encroaching water or injected gas through the fractures with little or no benefit to ultimate recovery of oil. Considerations were in progress to unitize the reservoir for pressure maintenance by gas injection. Some other engineers involved in the project had considerably different opinions at the time regarding continuity of fractures and regarding effects of such fractures on performance. The field was unitized Oct. 1, 1947. Subsequently, pilot gas injection tests were conducted in four areas of the field; large scale waterflooding was conducted in two parts of the field in the Bois d'Arc or Upper Hunton; and pilot waterflooding was conducted in the Chimney Hill or Lower Hunton. Full scale water-flooding is now in progress in the Chimney Hill section where it is oil productive. The primary purpose of this paper is to divine some of the secrets of this reservoir through analysis of all aspects of its performance, with the hope that it will be of help to engineers and operators in developing and operating other low permeability fractured reservoirs. In part, this considers variance of actual performance from some widely used conventional reservoir engineering assumptions. For brevity, other aspects of unit operation and its benefits to the owners are not discussed. Oil and Gas in Place For unit participation, net pay in the Bois #Arc defined by the gross SP anomaly on electric logs totalled 2,100,000 acre-ft in the 30,000-acre reservoir. Development of West Edmond predated modem logging techniques that now would be used to determine "net" or "productive" pay. In Fig. 1 this log pick is compared with detailed core analysis and core descripfion by Littlefield et a1.l for one well identified as A on the index map in Fig. 2. Not all of the gross Bois #Arc section had oil staining, but all cores with measureable intergranular permeability were stained. (The committee selection of the Bois d'Arc SP interval also includes the Frisco section as identified from cores by Littlefield.) The Bois d'Arc is oil productive throughout the entire 600-ft monoclinal accumulation from the eastern upstructure erosional pinchout to the west-side oil-water contact. (See Littlefield et al.l and McGee and Jenkins for geologic detail.)

SECOND only to the February Annual Meeting of the Institute are the Regional and Divisional meetings held in the fall of each year. Six such gatherings are scheduled in the next the months, with something likely to interest every member of the Institute. A brief résumé of the programs follows. Regional Meeting Vancouver T HE regional meeting of the Institute will be held at Vancouver, Sept. 13 to 20, in conjunction with the annual western meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The pro gram appeared on page 350 of MINING AND METALLURGY for July and-proof of careful preparation-a month later re- quires no correction and little elaboration. On the technical side there are few changes. A new item on the Wednesday morning program is the paper, "Investigation of Residential-type Stokers," by H. F. Yancey, supervising engineer, Northwest Experiment Station. U. S. Bureau of Mines, Seattle. As to entertainment the meeting is taking on some most pleasurable aspects. Two notable excursions have been arranged.

The removal of sulfur from steel has been studied by many investigators, but the quantitative relationships between the factors involved have not been determined. This is undoubtedly due to the number of variables encountered in practice, an attempt to study any one reaction or relation being affected by other reactions the relative importance of which cannot be estimated. The factors that affect the extent of removal of sulfur in the basic open-hearth process are generally considered to be: 1. Basicity of the slag: (a) Iron oxides in the slag; (b) carbon in the metal or carbide in the slag; (c) temperature. These factors affect the reactions: FeS + CaO = CaS + FeO FeS + CaO + C = CaS + CO + Fe. 2. Amount of sulfur in the gas. 3. Amount of manganese in the metal. The factors which affect the rate of removal of sulfur include, in addition to these: 4. Fluidity of the slag: (a) Normal changes in fluidity with temperature; (b) changes in fluidity because of the addition of special reagents such as fluorspar. 5. Agitation of the bath. Within the past two years, two papers have been presented dealing with the influence of sulfur in the gas on slag and metal. Nead' has shown that if a gas high in sulfur be used for heating, the metal and slag will absorb sulfur. Whitely2 concluded from his experiments that if a

Review of equipment, performance, and shaft design plans including head-frames for sinking and forms for lining are given. Also included are comparative data for shafts of 11 x20 ft and 193/4 x 30 ft with 756 and 666-ft depths, respectively. Advantage from curtain wall installation with "slip forms" which warrant consideration for normal lining are outlined. A preliminary review is also made of "chemical grouting" to stop water inflow leakage with Halliburton equipment and service. Two coal mine shafts recently completed in Franklin County, Ill., afford experience and accomplishment to warrant review. These shafts provide access to a tract with a potential recovery of one hundred million tons. This work provided the initial sinking by other than a contractor's organization since 1918. Four additional shafts required during the interim were sunk under contract arrangement with others. Supervisory contact and inspection afforded experience to govern planning and conduct of the recent work. TEST DRILLING Core test holes were drilled within each of the two shaft locations. Four additional cable tool holes were drilled on a radius of 700 ft from the shaft bottom to determine the coal seam elevations and govern the underground layout plans for each shaft. A graphic log of the hoist shaft test drillhole is shown by Fig. 1. A very soft sandstone was found at a depth of 16 ft. Cored recovery of the sandstone proved much weaker than the overlying compacted sand secured with coring facilities for soil recovery. Gradation from the very soft sandstone to fairly hard material occurred with the next 14 ft, extending to a depth of 30 ft. The weak character within the upper portion entailed need of adequate protection when sinking as described later. A part of the sandstone provided sufficient porosity and permeability to warrant further investigation. Adjacent cable tool drilling for temporary water supply disclosed inflow was limited to 2 gpm with a depth of 40 ft. It was increased to 12 gpm during the next 50 ft of drilling and occasioned subsequent precaution when sinking. General arrangement of facilities for sinking the hoist shaft is shown by Fig. 2. An available steel frame building was used to accommodate the hoist, compressor, shop, and shower or change room. The stiff leg derrick with 90-ft length of boom permitted removal of forms from the wood shop to the storage area or delivery within the shaft. Reinforcing steel and other needs were similarly handled, in addition to headframe erection. The headframe was placed over one end of the shaft to enable passage of forms for lining through the adjacent half next to the stiff leg derrick. Iron ore mining in the Adirondack region of northern New York dates back to the Revolutionary War. It is recorded that Benedict Arnold in his campaigns in the Lake Champlain area during the American Revolution utilized the local ores to produce armament and cannon balls. Through the efforts of early pioneers, the iron mining industry in northern New York gained impetus so that in the 1880's mines in the area accounted for nearly one fourth of the iron ore produced in the United States. Both magnetite and red hematite ores were mined during this period. With the discovery of the Lake Superior ores, the iron ore industry in New York started to decline and remained relatively unimportant until 1938. Modern day methods of mining and beneficiating sufficiently high tonnages of low-grade ores to justify the large expenditures for plant and equipment prompted a resurgence in northern New York mining. During the past several years, the production of iron ore from the Adirondack magnetites has greatly increased, and production which amounted to .6%, of the United States total during the 1918-1928 period (Mining and Metallurgy, November 1943) has been increased to 2.85% of the total in 1948. The Mather mine of The Negaunee Mine Co. embraces nearly all of Sections 1 and 2, T47N, R27W. within the limits of the cities of Negaunee and Ishpeming on the Marquette iron range of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Operations of the Negaunee Mine Co., the stock of which is jointly owned by Bethlehem Steel Co. and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., are under the direction of the latter company. The opening of the Mather mine was described by C. W. A1len. Mather "A" shaft was completed to an initial depth of 2352 ft in early 1943. The shaft capacity of over one million tons yearly is in prospect of being realized by orderly development and mining, and sinking of the second or "B" shaft then started in accordance with previous planning. Mather " B, " also a vertical shaft, was designed as a twin to Mather "A" shaft and the sinking technique developed at Mather "A" was utilized in "B" shaft operation.

Liberal use has been made in this paper of a recent publication on Russian, Italian, Belgian, and French experiments prepared jointly by the Centre d'Etudes et Recherches des Charbonnages de France (Cerchar) and the Institut National de l'Industrie Charbonnière of Belgium (Inichar).1 The writer is particularly indebted to Dr. E. T. Wilkins, of the Fuel Re¬search Station, London, and to Mr. James L. Elder, of the Alabama Under¬ground Gasification Experiment at Gorgas, Alabama, for their unfailing patience and effective support. It has been a privilege to serve and work with them and to acknowledge repeatedly their loyal cooperation. The recovery of the energy inherent in coal beds throughout the world has been done through the years by methods that today may be justly regarded as primitive. While the techniques of coal mining through the application of machines and the enhancement of information and skills have advanced to an extraordinary extent, particularly during the past 20 years, the underlying means is essentially the same as when man first began to mine coal. Despite this progress in the manner of coal mining, it continues today as a hazardous, toilsome, grimy task. Coal mining per se has advanced at a greater and more rapid stride in the past 25 years than the mining of any: other mineral, but the basic method is fundamentally the same as it was the first day a miner took a pick into his hands many centuries ago. This paper describes the unusual hazardous conditions encountered in mining thick, inclined coal beds under heavy cover in Carbon County, Utah. This description includes heavy roof conditions, sloughing ribs, steep pitches, and severe bouncing experience. Emphasis is placed on the top bench system of mining and development in the top half of a 16-ft seam, under the roof rock, which is bolted, and the recovery of the bottom coal on retreat; success of bolted roof and ribs; and shuttle car haulage on pitches up to 25%. The use of protective cages for operators of face equipment, the guarding of belt conveyor systems to prevent injury associated with deliberate entry, and the positive lockout of electrical equipment is described and illustrated. Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that in- fluence mining. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined conditions are met in the coal mines of the Columbia-Geneva Steel Div. of the United States Steel Corp., in southeastern Utah. This coal bed measures up to 16 ft in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 3000 ft. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colo. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest. It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development. INTRODUCTION MANY different shapes of drill bits are in use with hammer drills, but little definite information is available whereby to judge which one of these shapes is the best. The following investigation was undertaken in order to determine what effect, if any, the shape of the cutting edge has on the cutting speed and wearing qualities of drill bits. The bits tested were those in common use, namely, the 4-point or cross bit, the 6-point bit, the Z bit and the "Carr" bit. The rock in which the tests were made was the red granite from southeast Missouri. It is a coarse crystalline granite containing an unusually large amount of quartz and is extremely hard, and on account of its uniform texture is admirably adapted to this work. While tests in other rocks might show somewhat different results, nevertheless it is the opinion of the authors that the relative cutting quality inherent in the shape of the bits would be the same in all rocks. Other qualities, such as mudding freely, freedom from fitchering, etc., might make one bit more desirable than another in softer rocks. DESCRIPTION OF BITS TESTED The 4-point bits were the usual shaped bits commonly made on the Leyner sharpener with 14° taper on the wings and a 90° angle between cutting edges. Some tests were run at 85 lb. pressure with a 4-point bit made with a 5° taper on the wings. This was made by using the Carr bit die. The 6-point bits were the usual shaped hits made on, the Leyner sharpener. The Carr bits were made with a 5° taper and an angle of 100° between cutting edges.

MANY investigations of the rate of the sulfur transfer reaction between carbon-saturated iron and blast furnace type slags have been made." It is evident that the reaction is complex, the rate being affected by the presence of elements dissolved in the metal that are readily oxidized and therefore capable of existing in the slag phase. Thus Goldman, Derge, and Philbrook- have shown that carbon, silicon, manganese, and aluminum, in order of increasing effectiveness, accelerate sulfur transfer from iron containing these elements to blast furnace type slags. Quantitative information is still, however, not available on the relation between what have been termed side reactions, such as silicon transfer and CO evolution, and the sulfur transfer reaction itself. In other words, the stoichiometry of the reaction has not been investigated. In the present investigation, the transfer of all reacting elements and the evolution of CO have been measured simultaneously in order to establish the mechanism of the reaction which occurs in practice. Information of this nature cannot be deduced from equilibrium studies. It should be pointed out that in kinetic studies of this type quantitative conclusions are applicable only to the system studied. This restriction should be borne in mind when attempts are made to compare results from different investigations. Apparatus The apparatus used enables slag and metal samples to be taken at frequent intervals and also provides a continuous record of the amount of gas evolved. A sketch of the apparatus is given in Fig. 1. It may be considered in three sections: 1) furnace section, 2) blank volume section, and 3) pressure measuring section. The purpose of this symposium is to challenge industry to better air classification, and as a first step toward fulfillment, to spotlight three fairly recent, aerodynamically designed, highly efficient air classifiers. This discussion does not intend to imply that present practice is bad. Actually, when present air separators are used for the jobs for which they were originally designed, they give high production and uniform operation, with a minimum of maintenance. The customers of nonmetallic mineral pigment producers, however, are making increasing demands for finer products, such as 99.9 pct -20µ, which appears to be beyond the economic capabilities of standard air separators industrially used over the last 10 to 30 years. Here is an actual example. A 10-ft diam pebble mill is in closed circuit with a conventional 12-ft diam centrifugal air separator, grinding 20-mesh wollastonite to a series of fine grades up to 99.97 pct - U.S. No. 325 mesh (44µ). Fig. 1 shows variations in fineness of mill discharge (or air separator feed), recycle for regrinding (or air separator tails), and product as measured by a wet rotating sieve test. For example, when the mill is turning out a product 80 pct -325, the mill discharge or separator feed is 30 pct -325, and the coarse tailings or recycle is only 5 pct -325. Hence 25 pct of the 30 pct available is accepted as product. This is efficient separation, and the ratio of recycle to feed is only about 2: 1. How- ever, to make a product testing 99.97 pct -325 the separator feed is 62 pct -325 and the coarse tailing 60 pct -325. In this case the recycle ratio is about 13: 1 and the economic limit to produce fineness has been substantially reached with this given equipment and process arrangement.
