Nationalization of the coal mining industry in Great Britain was one of the first pieces of major legislation enacted by the post-war Labor Government in 1964. It followed a long period of economic depression with high unemployment and bad industrial relations in the coal mining industry during the 1930's, and shortages of coal during the last war. Upon nationalization, the National Coal Board took over control of the industry in 1947 and so became the biggest single employer of labor in the western world. As well as the coal mines themselves, it assumed responsibility for a great variety of other assets including coke ovens, byproduct plants, land, houses, railways and shipping wharves.

TEN years ago Taggart, Taylor and Ince1 described a workable, convenient apparatus for the measurement of contact angles be-tween cleaved, ground or polished particles and captive bubbles. Wark and Cox2 and Wark and Sutherland3 have done an im-mense amount of experimental work with this apparatus. Their work has had as principal object the determination of "con-tact curves." Contact curves are Cartesian charts in which pH (or some other variable) is plot-ted against quantity of modifying agent. The rectangular area is broken into two or more curvilinear areas separated by the contact curve. The curve indicates that a sharp demarcation exists between condi-tions that bring about sticking of particles to bubbles and conditions that do not pro-duce sticking, The type curve appears in the TRANSACTIONS as Fig. 1, page 248, volume 112. Wark and Cox offer data to show that the contact angle has a value determined by and characteristic of the agent used. Wark and Cox also make the statement that they believe this value is independent of concen-tration (ref. 2a, p. 209), They say: It is suspected that, given sufficient time and provided that there are no disturbing factors. the full ethyl xanthate angle (corresponding to a complete xanthate film) would be obtained in every case where contact occurs.

at temperatures of 1150°, 1250°, and 1350°C for liquid copper sulphides ranging in composition from saturation with Cu to about 21.5 pct S. From the experimental data, activities of Cu, S, and Cu2S in the melts were calculated. Also, the results furnish a new determination of the location of the curve showing the compositions of Cu-saturoted sulphide melts in the CU-S constitution diagram. THE "white metal" made as an intermediate L product in converting copper matte to blister copper is a matte approximating Cu2S in composition. It has long been known that liquid Cu-S mattes can exist at a given temperature over an appreciable composition range, with S:Cu ratios ranging up from a lower limit corresponding to equilibrium of the matte with a liquid Cu phase. The Cu-saturated matte has somewhat less S than Cu2S, although previous measurements of the compositions of Cu-saturated mattes are not in good agreement.'" As the S:Cu ratio approaches and slightly exceeds that for Cu2S, the partial pressure of sulphur gas over the liquid matte rapidly approaches atmospheric pressure,5 so that Cu-S melts with much more S than Cu2S can be made and handled only in pressure apparatus. Accordingly, the liquid copper sulphides of interest in copper smelting and readily studied experimentally fall in a relatively narrow composi- tion range about Cu2S. The freezing points of Cu-S mattes show a maximum of 1129°C near the composition Cu, dropping to 1105oC for Cu-saturated mattes having less S and dropping under 1100°C for higher S mattes.' Estimates of the sulphur pressure and other thermodynamic properties of liquid Cu,S were made by Kelley; based on extrapolations from equilibrium measurements on solid Cu,S. More recently, Cox and coworkers' studied equilibria in the reaction: Cu,S + H, e 2Cu + H,S over the temperature range 700" to 1250°C. They measured equilibrium H2S:H2 ratios presumably with both the sulphide and the metal phase present, so that their data above the melting point of Cu,S should measure the S pressure of Cu-saturated sulphide melts. The sulphur pressures of liquid copper sulphides of several S:Cu ratios at their freezing points can be estimated from data given by Posnjak, Allen, and Merwin." However, beyond these few data, no systematic study seems to have been made of the relations of sulphur pressure and other chemical properties of liquid copper sulphides to composition and temperature. The absence of a convenient glossary- of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copy, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. The effects of magnesium-rich surface layers of varying thickness on the mechanical properties of LiF have been studied. The yield stress, critical tensile stress, and work-hardening slope increase linearly with layer thickness, while the strain to fracture decreases yapidly with increasing layev thickness. The results of tension tests, supplemente!d by metallogvaphic evidence, indicate that the yield stress and the critical tensile stress of LiF are not determined by surface-source operation. DESPITE many studies, which have recently been reviewed,' certain fundamental aspects of the plasticity of LiF remain obscure. For instance, one question still awaiting a satisfactory resolution is: does the nucleation and/or multiplication of dislocations in LiF occur preferentially near the crystal surface? It is now well-known that mobile dislocation half-loops are readily introduced into LiF by surface damage and that the mechanical properties of LiF are affected by such surface damage. However, it is not known whether, in the absence of large numbers of artificially introduced surface sources, dislocations arise more easily near the crystal surface than in the crystal interior. It is also not known to what extent existing mobile dislocations multiply preferentially near the crystal surface. The present work is an experimental study of these matters. A short investigation of the effect of magnesium -alloyed surface layers on the deformation of LiF single crystals has been published by Westwood.~ Some relevant conclusions drawn from this research are restated here for purposes of comparison with the present work. 1) Tests on as-cleaved, chemically polished, coated and uncoated specimens show that a coating can restrict the operation of artificially introduced surface sources, thereby raising the yield stress. A coating also decreases the initial rate of work hardening of as-cleaved LiF crystals by reducing the number of active dislocation sources, so that mutual dislocation interference effects are lessened. 2) A catastrophic breakthrough of groups of edge dislocations piled up against the coating can cause stress drops in the stress-strain curve. 3) A surface coating can act as a stable barrier to the egress of dislocations, causing pile-up,

In presenting the following data on combustion in the open hearth furnace and the advisability of automatic combusion control, the author finds himself much more severely handicapped by the lack of reliable test results than he had anticipated when he first undertook to write this paper. In order thoroughly to investigate how the results of an open-hearth furnace are influenced by combustion, one would have to draw up a large number of heat-balance sheets, as Kinney and McDermottl have given for one heat in their extremely able paper on "Open Hearth Efficiency,' presented before the American Iron and Steel Institute on October 27th,1 1922. Instead of covering only one heat, however, such heat-balance sheets would have to embrace a large number of heats, and not only for one kind of fuel, but for all the various fuels in customary use. Use of Radiation-protected Pyrometer Such tests necessitate extremely careful temperature readings, and here the first serious difficulty presents itself. Nearly all the temperature readings so far published have been taken with thermocouples for the lower ranges and with optical or radiation pyrometers for the higher ranges. This method of measuring reveals the temperature of the surrounding walls, or in the case of optical or radiation measurements, the temperature of that part of the opposing walls which has been focused by the instrument. The error in ascertaining the temperature of the gases entering or the waste gases leaving the checker chambers is probably not very large, as the flowing gases impart their temperature to the walls of the flues. On the other hand, the uptakes, where the preheat temperature of gas and air are usually measured, are under the influence of radiated heat from the port ends, and correct temperature readings can here be taken only by using a radiation-protected pyrometer of the aspirating type.

It is the purpose of this article to give a brief account. of the experimental work and to show how the increase in efficiency was brought about. Part of the experimental work described in this paper was carried out by the writers, while in the employ of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., under the direction of M. W. Krejci, Metallurgist, and Arthur Crowfoot, Chief Sampler. Complete records of all of the MacDougall testing work have been placed at our disposal through the courtesy of A. E. Wheeler, Superintendent. II. BRIEF HISTORY OF PRESENT MACDOUGALL PLANT. The first change from the Brueckner cylinders used for roasting concentrates at Great Falls was the construction of a MacDougall roaster of the Herreshoff type. This furnace was first started on June 15, 1898. It bad eight hearths, was lined with fire brick, and had an air-cooled central shaft, but no provision was made for cooling the rabble arms. It was operated for a while, and accomplished the work of roasting, but ran so hot that the rabble arms became twisted and distorted out of shape. To prevent the furnace from becoming too hot a device was then installed to draw the heated gases away from the hearths. This consisted of a pipe connected to alternate hearths of the MacDougall furnace and also connected to the flue. It was equipped with dampers, 'so that the hot gases could be drawn away from any one of the alternate hearths directly into the flue.

Growing interest in pit crushing and conveying is evident from the recent many articles, technical papers, and new equipment development. Application of a pit crushing and conveying system is complex. Many factors, such as mine design, production scheduling, as well as initial and ongoing capital and operating costs must be thoroughly and realistically examined. This paper will address the fundamentals to be considered and review several approaches to developing a total system for a new and existing mine situation. The planning function will be outlined and operating and design criteria defined to interface the mining operation and the pit crushing conveying system.

The structure of GaAs-Ge heterojunctions prepared by a back-melting process was studied by X-rav diffraction, melallographic, and electron-micro-analyzer techniques. The boundary region between the GaAs and the germanium was found to consist of a four-layered band. A discontinuity between the two inner bands was brought about by solidification occurring simultaneously from the GaAs and the germanium side. The junction material OH either side of the central discotinuity was found to have grown as a single Crystal with the orientation of the parent substrate. It was found essential to determine the GaAs-Ge phase diagram. This was accomplished by a series of alloys containing 0 to 40 wt pet GaAs. Over this range the diagram is a simple eutectic with the eutectic point at 74 wt pet Ge and 845 C. The limiting- solubility of Coils in germanium was found to bc less than 5 wt pet. The Kossel divergent-beam X-ray technique was used to study orientation relationships across the boundary lager. A great deal of effort has been recently expended on the electrical properties of heterojunctions. Little attention, however, has been given to the metallurgical variables which may be of importance in the formation of the junctions. The present work was undertaken to investigate some of the more pertinent metallurgical aspects of interface-alloyed GaAs-Ge heterojunctions. Such parameters as solidification processes, composition gradients, orientation effects, and the accommodation of crystal structures have been the objects of study in this program. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Phase Diagram. The phase diagram of the GaAs-Ge pseudobinary system was determined by means of cooling curves. A Bridgeman furnace was employed with the center section maintained at 1200°C and the upper section at 800°C. Melts varying from 0 to 40 at. pct in GaAs content were used. Each charge was incapsulated under a two-thirds atmosphere of argon in a carbon-coated quartz tube. Five min in the furnace hot zone provided rapid melting and homogenization. The capsule was then removed to the cooler portion of the furnace. Cooling times were of the order of 3 min. The resulting homogeneous microstructure indicated that equilibrium conditions were obtained by this procedure. Formation of Heterojunctions. Rectangular parallelepiped single-crystal samples were cut with the large faces of either the (l00), (110), or (111) orientation. The a and y solubility limits in the Fe-Ni phase diagram have been redetermined at temperatures above 500°C. Both a diffusion-couple and a quench and anneal technique were used. The solubility limits were measured with an electron-probe micro-analyzer. The nickel concentration at the phase boundary is increased below 700°C and the a solid-solubility range is much larger than had been previously measured. The solubility limits are also extrapolated to 300°C. It is suggested that the solubility of nickel in a FeNi reaches a maximum in the temperature interval 400o to 500°C. THE equilibrium diagram has been of great use in the field of meteoritics, where the phase relations between kamacite (a) and taenite (?) in metallic meteorites can be described by means of the Fe-Ni diagram. The study of metallic meteorites by electron-probe microanalysis has cast some doubt on the accuracy of the presently available Fe-Ni diagrams.1, 2 Recent thermodynamic studies of the Fe-Ni system also suggest that the diagram may be in error.3 For these reasons the high-temperature (800o to 500°C) part of the diagram was redetermined. INTRODUCTION The currently accepted Fe-Ni diagram is that of Owen and Liu.4 Above 910°C, there is a region of complete solid solubility, ? (fee). Below 910°C, the a (bee) phase is stable in pure iron. The effect of increasing amounts of nickel is to stabilize the y phase. The phases that form when Fe-Ni alloys are heated or cooled bear little relation to the equilibrium diagram. If an alloy is cooled from the y state and held at a temperature within the a + y field, no evidence has been found for the occurrence of the y - a transformation.5 If the alloy is cooled to low enough temperatures the y phase breaks down into a supersaturated bee phase called a2. In fact, in alloys over 27 pet Ni the y phase is retained at room temperature.6 The a, phase has the same composition as the original y. The temperature at which a2 forms, the M, temperature, has been determined experimentally.' A state of equilibrium can be approached by cooling below M, to form a2 and then reheating the alloy into the two-phase region of the diagram. The y phase will then begin to precipitate out of the a2 phase and grow. The growth of the phase, however, is quite slow. Using the interdiffusion coefficients -Da of Goldstein et al.,8 it is estimated that it takes about 1 year to grow a 10-µ-wide region of ? at 700°C in a 5 pet Ni alloy. Owen and Liu4 used the technique just described to form the equilibrium phases. The phases present were determined by means of X-ray analysis. The accuracy of their diagram depends on the number of alloys available near the phase boundary at a given temperature. In this study two different techniques were used to determine the a/a + ? and ?/a + ? solubility limits. The inherent accuracy of both techniques was greatly improved over that used by previous investigators because the phase-boundary compositions were measured with an electron-probe microanalyzer. PROCEDURE The two methods used to determine the Fe-Ni diagram are the diffusion couple (D.C.) and the quench-and-anneal (Q.+A.) techniques. In the first method, diffusion couples whose diffusion path goes through a two-phase region of the phase diagram were used. A description of the technique used for making the diffusion couples has been described in a previous paper.' After the diffusion treatment a discontinuity in the resultant concentration vs distance profile was measured. The nickel concentrations in the a and ? phases at the interface of the discontinuity are the solubility limits of the a and ? phases in the phase diagram at the diffusion temperature. PRESENT-DAY processing in many industries, calcining, sintering, briquetting, beneficiation and nodulizing, increasingly calls for the handling of large volumes of hot bulk materials. Various types of conveyors have been employed. This discussion will cover the factors governing their selection. For temperature ranges up to 400°F, or approximately 200°C, a wide range of conveyors is available. Special constructions of rubber conveyor belts. steel conveyor belts, vibrating and shaker conveyors, apron conveyors, and drag chain conveyors, all are used successfully. As temperatures go well above 400°F, however, choice of conveyors is narrowly limited. This paper will consider the problem of handling bulk materials only where the temperatures exceed 400°F.

The status of rock mechanics as applied to petroleum production might be termed, "Rock Mechanics-A New Name for Old Problems." The petroleum industry's efforts, from its earliest days, have been concerned with rocks, hopefully containing hydrocarbon accumulations in economic quantities. Geophysical and geological studies, wildcat and development drilling procedures, well bore mechanics and reservoir engineering operations, and certain aspects of production operations involve rock mechanics in various ways. Stress states and temperatures of interest range from low values in surface or near-surface activities, to very high values encountered at depths now exceeding 25,000 ft; deeper and deeper drilling will continue to increase this range. Time scales vary from a few microseconds in wave propagation measurements and some aspects of rock behavior during drilling, to seconds, minutes or hours for other drilling and well bore mechanics problems, to several years during which the efficient and economical depletion of reservoir systems is achieved. Subsurface sedimentary formations contain various fluids, of course, and reservoir fluid movement commonly involves three-dimensional, three-phase (oil, gas, and water) fluid flow. Many extremely difficult problems in rock mechanics arise for the Petroleum Engineer because of fluid movement (or lack of desired movement) in a well bore or reservoir. The discussion to follow illustrates just a few of the many topics in rock mechanics of significance to the petroleum industry. Time precludes anything other than a superficial treatment of the topics mentioned. A great deal of work has been carried out by various research groups in the petroleum field and significant efforts are continuing, as a review of the technical literature will reveal.

THERMAL expansion of rhenium data have been reported by Agte et al.,&apos; and Medoff and cadoff,&apos; respectively, while the linear expansion coefficient was determined by Sims et Al.3 Denoting expansion coefficients parallel and at right angle to c axis by all and Al respectively, their weighted mean should be equal to dilatometric linear coefficient of a random polycrystalline specimen. The values reported for these coefficients are tabulated below: Since these values are in poor agreement, and because of anomalous expansion behavior observed in titanium 4 and chromium, a rede termination of the axial expansion was carried out. A Unicam 19-cm-diam high-temperature camera was used, with unfiltered CuK radiation. Camera calibration was carried out using at Pt wire standarde at temperatures up to 1100oC, the variation between indicated and true temperature being within the experimental error (estimated at <3oC) above 750o C. Rhenium Johnson Matthey spectrographic standard) was vacuum annealed at 1000 oC prior to X-ray diffraction experiments. Lattice parameters were obtained by least-squares solution using the reflec- tions (1232), (1015), (2024), and (3030) for all the patterns, and the additional reflection (2133) for higher temperature (400°C and above) patterns. The relative expansion data obtained are shown in Fig. 1, lengths of the vertical bars indicating the spread in the parameter values obtained by using various combinations of three spacings from the four or five measured. The data calculated from the equation of Ref. 2 are included for comparison purposes. Several specimens were used to obtain the above data, neither of them showing a significant parameter change after completion of the high temperature runs. Some parameter data and the corresponding expansion coefficients between 25 oC and the measurement temperature are tabulated below. The comparison of the present data with those previously reported shows reasonable agreement with the results of Medoff and cadoff2 within the temperature range covered by them (up to 1000 oC). The a values are appreciably higher throughout most of the investigated temperature range. The basal expansion is—in agreement with their findings—appreciably higher than that in the direction of hexagonal axis. The expansion coefficient, al, however, decreases rather more slowly with temperature than previously reported. The expansion along the c axis up to nearly 1000°C appears in excellent agreement. However, at higher temperatures there is a marked deviation towards higher expansion, reproducible between different specimens. Furthermore, there seems to be some irregularity in the variation of all with temperature, the apparent local minimum and maximum values at 510o and 1024o C, Table II, being well outside the experimental error limits. It must be stressed that the apparent discontinuity in the c parameter expansion is still insufficient to account for the expansion value reported by Agte et al.&apos; since a total expansion of close to 2 pct would

The total estimated production of coal in the United States during the first century and a quarter of mining is shown in Table 20. This is the total of the production of the various states already shown in the various tables, and is believed to be the first statement of this sort made. No such table prepared from limited data can be accurate, but it is the writer&apos;s opinion that the totals shown are less than those actually produced. It was thought that this study would enable a reasonably accurate account of the movement of coal down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to be written. The searches made have shown that at this time the data do not exist from which such a study can be made, but some of the facts collected may be useful to future students.

The oxidation of pyritic sulphur associated with coal is important for the following reasons: 1. It is the predominant cause for the formation of acid mine drainage issuing from bituminous coal seams. This drainage pollutes the streams in coal regions, making the water unfit for industrial purposes and causing the disappearance of fish and wild life. As a consequence the movement of industry and especially recreational industry, so important to the population of these areas as an alternative means of livelihood, is impeded. 2. It is instrumental in effecting a series of reactions, which bring about the degradation and ultimately result in the spontaneous combustion of bituminous coal in storage. 3. It contributes to the breaking and shattering of the coal structure and is one of the causes of roof falls and floor lifts in mines. 4. It is the primary cause of the many nuisances associated with gob piles and the refuse of cleaning plants. 5. Its proper control and application might possibly be employed in the preparation of coal to reduce the inorganic sulphur content. The research that has been conducted on the oxidation of the various forms of iron sulphides is extensive and the literature voluminous. Nevertheless, few efforts have been made to determine experimentally and with some precision the mechanism of the reaction under the conditions of its occurrence in bituminous coal mines. It has generally been accepted that the oxidation of pyritic sulphur proceeds according to the reaction 2FeS2 + 2H2O + 7O2 ? 2FeSO4 + 2H2SO4 [1] The ferrous sulphate in the drainage streams is further oxidized by air to produce ferric hydroxide and more acid. Yet the literature fails to disclose any pertinent investigation on the mechanism of this reaction. The present contribution is concerned primarily with this aspect of the problem and while the work to be reported is not yet complete, it has yielded results from which interesting and significant conclusions may be drawn.

The latest revised edition of Mr. C. A. stetefeldt&apos;s book on the Lixiviation of Silver-Ores, which appeared very recently, contains no mention of the volatilization of silver in chloridizing-roasting—an omission which is the more remarkable in view of the fact that in former editions of the work this important subject was noticed. Moreover, Mr. Stetefeldt has discussed it to some extent in his paper on " The Stetefeldt Furnace," * in which he criticised certain statements made by me before the Colorado Scientific Society in May, 1893, in a paper entitled " A Review of the Russell Process;" ? and Mr. Morse, in his paper on " The Lixiviation of Silver-Ores by the Russell Process at Aspen, Colorado," $ has given statistics showing the loss of silver by volatilization (including the dustloss, which Mr. Morse estimates at not more than 1 per cent.) on more than 30,000 tons of ore roasted, to have been 9.16 per cent. The matter must certainly be deemed important enough to warrant me in returning to it, and offering, with the aid of the figures made public since my first paper, a reply to the criticisms of Mr. Stetefeldt. Mine production of recoverable zinc w as 1. 158 million toils of 27.4% of free world production in 1976. Slab zinc pro¬duction was placed at 472,000 tons that year. Canadian mine production of recoverable lead was 247,000 tons or 10.6% of the free world production. Refined lead that year was at 177,000 tons.

THE iron deposits of the Imataca Range of Venezuela, which occur along the Orinoco River, in the northern border of the Guayana High-lands, have lately attracted attention on account of their economic possibilities. Many deposits occur in this area; some of slight economic importance and others that may rank with the largest masses of high-grade iron ore of the world. The geology and the character of the ores seem to be remarkably similar to those of the large iron deposits of Brazil. In the investigation of the Venezuelan deposits a definite relationship has been found between the mineralization of the large orebodies and igneous intrusions, especially norites and granites. The following paper is the result of a field and laboratory investigation of the ore deposits. The field work was done during the months of February and March of the year 1929, partly in the company of Prof. W. H. Newhouse. The laboratory studies have been made in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, under the supervision of Profes-sor Lindgren and Professor Newhouse.

The junction luminescence of GaAsxP1-x diodes containing up to 47 pct Gap was studied. Diodes were prepared by diffusing zinc into n-type material which was eithw boat- or vapor-gvown. Observations concerning the energy and the line shape of the spontaneous emission are presented and discussed; in particular the influence of inhomogeneous phosphorus distribution is considered. The role of reabsorption of the junction radiation is pointed out. With increasing current, the peak emission shifts to higher enwgy. This is alm true in cases where slow line narrowing occurs simultaneously. The length dependence of the threshold current density for lasing at 77 °K was examined for lasers made from the same material. It was found that longer lasers have lower threshold curvent densities, Estimates of the characteristic laser losses are given. Data concwning the range of Gap concentration in which stimulated emission was observed are presented. FORWARD-BIASED p-n junctions in mixed alloys of GaAsxPl-, emit light whose wave length depenfs on the composition of the alloy ranging from 8400A (x = 1) to 5350A (x = 0) at 77°K. Laser action in vapor-grown material was first reported by Holonyak and evacqua,&apos; and in boat-grown material by Ainslie, Pilkuhn, and Rupprecht.&apos; In both cases this was observed for low Gap concentration where GaAs,Pl-, is still a "direct" semiconductor with the lowest conductance-band minimum at k = 0 and a subsidiary minimum in the [loo] direction. As the Gap concentration is increased, the subsidiary [loo] minimum in the conduction band is lowered and finally becomes the lowest minimum for Gap concentrations above 50 pt,3 making the alloy an &apos;&apos;indirect" semiconductor. It is of interest to determine up to which Gap concentration stimulated emission can be observed. EXPERIMENTAL Boat-grown material was prepared by N. Ainslie of IBM by horizontal Bridgman technique. The material was n type and silicon-doped up to a concentration of 10&apos;&apos; cm-&apos;. Vapor-grown material was made by E. Hull of IBM or received from Merck & Co. Diodes were fabricated in a similar manner as in the case of GaAs by zinc diffusion. Details about the diffusion can be found in a later paper.4 All diodes were of Fabry-Perot structure with two parallel sides cleaved and the other two sides sawed. Their width ranged from 50 to 150 p and their length from 50 to 700 p. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Spectral Distributions. A typical display of the junction luminescence of a GaAsxPl-, diode is shown in Fig. 1. The liquid-nitrogen and room-temperature curves which were taken at a very low current (25 ma dc) show a relatively sharp high-energy emission which is band-edge radiation. They also show a broad low-energy emission which is due to transitions to deep impurity levels. This latter emission line may have different shapes and positions depending on the nature of the material. It can sometimes be quite near the band gap giving rise to "bumps" in the high-energy line. The results presented in this paper will be concerned only with the high-energy emission which becomes more intense relative to the low-energy emission when the current is increased and the temperature is lowered.
